The smelter is often considered the flywheel of the copper industry. No other unit can produce such a uniform product from so many starting materials. Direct-smelting ore, concentrate, precipitate, refinery slag, and scrap in almost any combination can be processed into blister or anode copper. Copper smelting practice has advanced little in the last century. It is still basically matte smelting, although the source of matte has changed from the blast furnace to the reverberatory furnace because of changes in smelter feed, and the Great Falls converter has been replaced by the Peirce-Smith converter. This lack of progress has continued because the economic forces required to produce change have not been of sufficient magnitude. Traditionally, the smelting, operation has required only about 10% of the total cost of producing copper from its ores and this minor cost item has not warranted change until recently.

AustraliaÆs opal and sapphire mining industry has fallen from its peak in the 1980s and 1990s into a significant low today. This is not due to exhaustion of the resource, but instead an over-reliance of the Australian miner on achieving a fair price for the gemstone product from offshore middlemen dealers. Gemstone and geological research is also at a low as Federal higher education expenditure has fallen with research institutions relying increasingly on private funding in an environment of restricted autonomy and flexibility for researchers. What little remaining research skills the universities have is being bled into the private sector as a result of the mining boom and encouraged by lower than average academic salaries. Nevertheless, some highly innovative research has been taking place, often by self-funded individuals and retired academics simply with a desire to advance the understanding of the particular branch of science in which they are interested. New models for the formation of sapphire and opal are now beginning to be applied to the exploration for these gemstone commodities. This research, together with well thought out plans for managing the gemstone product through its value-adding steps to the jewellery retail level, has the potential to bring about a resurgence in the Australian gemstone industry.

We have studied the gold-aluminum system by X-ray diffraction and by the microscope over the entire range of composition for temperatures between 300° and 500° C. Results obtained are shown in Fig. 1, combined with the work of Heycock and Neville1 at higher temperatures. The diagram differs in important details from that given by Hansen2 in his critical compilation of the literature of binary alloy systems. This work was undertaken both because of the intrinsic value of a knowledge of the phase diagram of this system and because of the need of theoretical metallurgy for precise and accurate data, particularly X-ray diffraction data. Systematic studies of equilibrium diagrams, particularly by Hume-Rothery,3 have shown regularities that yield a certain insight into the nature of alloying forces. It has been shown, for example, that solid solubility depends on the concentration of free electrons in the alloy, on the relative radii of solvent and solute atoms, on the forces of attraction between atoms, and on the relative stability of intermediate phases. The well-known Hume-Rothery rule states that the crystal structures and compositions of many intermediate phases depend on the electron-to-atom ratio. This has been confirmed and extended by wave mechanical calculations.4 A knowledge of the forces between atoms in alloys, even an imperfectly developed empirical one, should be a valuable guide in the preparation of technological alloys of desirable properties. Furthermore, such information is basic in such problems as rate of diffusion, age-hardening, phase transformations, and others. Drilling of the second shaft at Texas Gulf Sulphur Co.'s Cane Creek potash operation southwest of Moab, Utah, is perhaps the largest undertaking ever made by private industry in the field of rotary shaft drilling. The new shaft, known as No. 2, is located within the plant area, about 400 ft northeast of the No. 1 shaft. This location within the pillar of the first shaft allowed utilization of a great deal of in- formation gained prior to and during sinking of the original No. 1 shaft, a conventionally sunk 22-ft diam shaft 2789 ft deep. The No. 2 shaft will be used for auxiliary transportation of men and supplies, and is steel lined with a 48-in. ID casing. The top 825 ft of the shaft is in predominantly red sandstone with interbedded shales. From 825 ft to 2800 ft, which is the top of the salt beds, the rock is mostly limestone with interbeds of anhydrite and shale.

The deposit of rock-salt which is known to exist along the eastern shore of Lake Huron, in the province of Ontario, has lately been more completely explored than before, by a boring with a diamond drill, put down by Henry Attrill, Esq., of New York City, and the results obtained are so important in every way that I make no apology for presenting them to the Institute of Mining Engineers. I may be permitted to preface an account of this remarkable exploration, and of its results, with a historical sketch of the discovery and development of this salt-region. It was in December, 1865, that a boring was begun near the town of Goderich, in the hope of finding petroleum. In this the adventurers were disappointed, but, after passing through about 800 feet of limestone, they encountered a series of variegated marls, in which, at a, depth of 964 feet from the surface, a bed of rock-salt, 30 feet in thickness, was met with in May, 1866. The boring was carried to a depth of 1010 feet, ending in hard rock, and yielded, by pumping, a very pure saturated brine when examined by me in August of the same year. In the report of the Geological Survey of Canada for 1863-66, published early in 1867, I described this salt-well, with many geological details, and gave an analysis of the brine. In the next three years a considerable number of wells was sunk in and around Goderich, and numerous trials were made in various other parts of the region. Salt was found at Kincardine, thirty miles north-northeast from Goderich, at a depth of about 900 feet, and also at Clinton, thirteen miles southeast, at 1180 feet. Records of these wells, with analyses of the brine from them, were given by myself in a subsequent report of the Geological Survey, 1866-69, published in 1870 (pp. 211-244), together with accounts of various unsuccessful borings in the neighborhood, analyses of the brines from the various wells (including one analysis by Dr. Goessmann), with many details of the salt-manufacture at Goderich, at Syracuse, New York, and at Saginaw, Michigan. Svedala has a ported kiln process, designed specifically for the direct reduction of pelletized or natural lump iron ores. The process is called ACCAR. This ported kiln technology has been coupled with Svedala's GRATE-KILN System, for iron ore pelletizing, into the GRATE-CAR System for the reduction of fine grained ore concentrates through the steps of agglomeration, induration and reduction in a single production line. Additional applications of the GRATE-CAR System include: the recovery, agglomeration and reduction of steelmill waste oxide fines and the use of minus 6mm size natural lump ores to produce a highly metallized pellet agglomerate. Svedala conducts tests to confirm certain operating parameters through process simulations of the GRATE-CAR process. These tests are conducted at Svedala's Process Research and Test Center, Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Svedala also assesses issues of process variables, heat transfer, equipment sizing, retention time and endothermic demand associated with iron ore reduction using natural gas or coal as the reductant. The purpose of this paper is to present the GRATE-CAR processing concepts, the commercial production line and the testing procedures associated with investigating potential raw materials.

My first paper, read at the Cobalt Meeting of the Institute,' July, 1907, dealt with the behavior of a small Wilfley table when collceiltrating galena from quartz, the table being fed with natural products, with sized products, and with classified products. Since galena, having a specific gravity of 7.5, is among the heaviest minerals ordinarily concentrated by Wilfley table, it was desirable that a similar set of tests upon a mineral of lighter weight should be made. Chalcopyrite, of a specific gravity of 4, would have been the best mineral for this purpose, on account of its great importance as an economic mineral, but in carrying out the test I was obliged to content myself with a cupriferous pyrite, the specific gravity of which was 4.68 and the content in copper 8.80 per cent. Through the kindness of H. 0. Cummins, this material was obtained from Shasta, Cal., in very pure, clean, homogeneous condition. It was broken by rolls to 2 mm. in size, taking care to make a minimum of slimes. The quartz used to mix with it was pure, white, New England quartz, broken in the same way to the same size. In studying the accompanying tables, it should be borne in mind that the material concentrated was of low copper-content, and in many cases the quantity fed to the machine was 1 kg. or less. As a consequence of the smallness of the quantity treated it was very difficult to adjust the table and get it in condition to do its best work before the feed became exhausted, and for this reason many results were obtained which appear irregular.

This paper focuses on the significant impact that geological information has in relation to the valuation, both equity market and accounting records, of mining companies. There are many different measures adopted by investors and analysts in valuing mining companies. In particular, focus is primarily on calculation of profit as it is the authors primary expertise. The importance of geological information to the calculation of profit (and to many other measures of a mining company performance) is not always understood by the geologist. The aim of this paper is to raise the awareness of geologists (particularly those who are competent persons under the JORC code) of the impact that reserve statements û and changes to û have on profits. This is the first time that this subject has been presented directly to geologists. Similar versions of this paper have been presented at other forums where other important users (directors, auditors, accountants, analysts, investors) or preparers of financial statements have been made aware of the importance of the geological information. In essence, all mining companies prepare annual financial statements, which are adopted by directors and audited. The major items that require judgement generally revolve around two areas û commodity price outlook and the accuracy of reserves and resources. Reserves and resources are important, and that there is undoubtedly a lack of understanding about the assumptions and accuracy of reserves and resources by accountants, directors and auditors, and a general lack of understanding by geologists as to how the information that they prepare is used. Across the globe the majority of mining companies are listed on stock exchanges (with the main exception being nationally controlled mining companies û eg Codelco). In a very simplistic manner, I have divided all mining companies into three types: exploration plays û these companies are still in the finding or proving modeÆ and typically the stock market and investors rely on geological information and remaining cash in determining their assessment of the company; single mine companies û the major items that investors and the stock market look for are reserves, inferred resources, commodity price outlook and discounted cashflow calculations; and multiple mine companies û the investment community and stock market are looking at reserves, inferred resources (generally to a lesser extent at this stage), commodity price outlook, discounted cashflow calculations and profit and loss accounts. Regardless of the type of company, the equity markets, including analysts, try to determine appropriate valuations for mining companies. In doing this the major two areas that require judgemental consideration are the commodity price outlook and the level of reserves and resources. Generally speaking, most mining companies have a strong understanding of their cost structures û in particular their cash costs as distinct from their accounting costs of production û and therefore this area generally gets less consideration than the other two matters mentioned above.

Modern Plastics (July, 1983) reported that about 2.2 million tons of mineral fillers were expected to be consumed by the plastics industry that year, of which 7096 was limestone derived. The combination of fillers and polymers is called a composite and, in the more general sense includes continuous and discontinuous components in a matrix. The only significant technical advance in the fillers industry has been the greater general availability of surfied (Ferrigno 1959), an acronym for surface modified, fillers. The many reasons for this occurrence will be given in detail later, but the primary reason lie with differences between inorganic filler surfaces and the polymers which bind them together to form the composite. Minerals and glasses (fiberglass, fly-ash and beads) have surface tensions in excess of 200 dynes/cm, whereas organic materials have surface tensions less than 75 dynes cm. Water has a surface tension of 72 dynes/cm and is always present as an absorbed layer on high surface tension materials to reduce the surface tension. Although almost any organic liquid or polymer has a surface tension low enough to displace the water layer, the highly polar nature of filler surfaces requires highly polar agents to produce a permanent effect, and frequently the water is so tightly bonded or so much more active that the displacement is temporary. Furthermore; the water layer causes tiny particles to adhere to each other (agglomerate) to make sepaartion or dispersion of the individual particles very difficult. The solution to these problems is then to form a chemically bonded layer on the filler surface similar to that of the polymer so that immediate wetting, dispersion and uniform distribution of the filler particles is obtained.

A critical appraisal of the wide variety of processes used in the pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals shows that there is a strong physico-chemical and, in particular thermodynamic, basis for the variety. Based on this, a simple classif- ication scheme has been developed which makes it possible to understand the methods for extracting individual metals and non-metals pyrometallurgically and to assess which are the more attractive routes. The analysis presented shows why there are essentially two broad routes for pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals; viz., the reduce- refine and the refine-reduce routes. Halides have the role in pyrometall- urgical processing of producing pure compounds for subsequent reduction. The criteria which determine the selection of reduction method for oxide raw materials and intermediate halides (e.g., use of carbon, hydrogen, a more reactive metal or electrowinning) are examined critically in the paper. The treatment of sulfide raw materials is considered also, particularly the criterion for smelting sulfides directly to the metal.

Rehabilitation of the Henry Hudson Bridge is nearing completion, connecting Spuyten Duyvil in the Bronx to Inwood Hill in Manhattan, New York. Constructed in 1936, the Henry Hudson Bridge spans 840 feet over the Hudson River. Challenging geotechnical aspects of this Project required a team of innovators to overcome. Rehabilitation of the existing bridge involved the replacement of sixteen bent pedestal substructures, two abutment pilasters and installation of new deep foundations at the skewbacks. However, the Bridge, roadways, adjacent Metro-North Railroad (MNR) structures and New York City (NYC) Parks land were to remain open to the public for use, with minimal disturbance. In addition to physical constraints, geologic site conditions varied widely across both sides of the River, with varying bedrock quality and depth, greatly impacting the proposed design and construction. Extensive analysis of bedrock conditions was conducted to locate areas of potential wedge failure. The implementation of anchors was used to reinforce rock stability where pedestals and pilasters were replaced. This paper describes several challenging technical and natural aspects overcome in the rehabilitation of the Henry Hudson bridge foundations, including varying geologic site conditions, access restrictions, construction limitations, project specifications and design requirements.

The barite industry shares with its associates in the minerals industry the impediments of excessive federal and state regulations. We have learned to exist with the Organic Act of 1976, the Mine Safety and Health Act of 1966, and the Multiple Use Act of 1955. I do not mean to imply by the above that all aspects of mining legislation have been detrimental, however, each of you has been subjected to interpretative restrictions by federal or state bureaucrats. As frustrating and costly as this is to the barite industry, it is not the primary problem facing our segment of the industry at the present time. Our major difficulty today deals not with too much government regulation, but with the lack of a cohesive and consistent government energy program. This administration and those that have preceded it have dealt with intermittent energy crises on an emergency basis. If we remove the political rhetoric which has surrounded each of the more recent major crises, we can liken the action of our federal government to that of a rural volunteer fire department which devotes its entire efforts toward extinguishing existing fires rather than the developing of programs designed to prevent future fires. The lack of a comprehensive energy program has created an environment in which long range planning is extremely difficult, if not impossible.

"ABSTRACTCoal Mountain Operations is the newest of Fording Coal’s operations although it is the oldest in terms of its historical production. In October, 1994, Fording purchased the former Corbin Creek/Byron Creek Mine. The mine is located in southeastern British Columbia, approximately 150 air kilometers from Calgary, Alberta. It was first developed in 1905 and has gone through a variety of owners in its 90-year history.This paper will deal with the remobilization strategy and the mining plans for the operation which are being implemented to make this operation competitive in the world export coal market. IntroductionIn October 1994, following a due diligence process, Fording Coal Limited purchased Coal Mountain Operations from Corbin Creek Resources, an employee group which had previously owned the mine. The purchase awarded Fording Coal Limited with 100% of the assets, and control of all the coal leases at Coal Mountain.The mine is located in southeastern British Columbia, southeast of Sparwood at the hamlet of Corbin, (Fig. 1).Rehiring of laid-off employees started in November 1994, with mining activities also recommencing in November. The coal preparation plant was restarted in December with one shift, went to two shifts in January 1995, and had four-shift, full-time operation in April 1996."

SnO2:F/CdS:In bilayers were produced by the spray pyrolysis technique on glass substrates. The structures were characterized by recording and investigating their transmittance curves, I-V plots, X-ray difractograms (XRD) and by observing their scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. From the I-V plots it was found that the SnO2:F forms an ohmic or quasi-ohmic contact with CdS:In. XRD patterns show the polycrystalline nature of the films and show that there is a small shift in the position of the (200) line of SnO2:F without the appearance of new peaks. The morphology of the structures are compared with those of SnO2:F alone and CdS:In alone on glass substrates.

THE Simon-Carves washer, originally known as the Baum jig washer, was first built in Europe about 1892. It was probably the first washer to use intermittent pressure of air on water in one part of the wash box to obtain water pulsations in another part. This type of washer was also the first to successfully clean various sizes in the same unit. Previous practice was to size closely before washing. Today there are several large firms abroad, and a few in the United States, that are constructing the Baum type washer. The design of all is practically the same, their differences being only in details. In 1928, the Hanna Coal Co. first gave consideration to the question of coal cleaning. It was believed at that time that by efficient removal of so-called noncombustibles appearing in the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam, certain markets that had been lost due to poor preparation might be recovered. Mechanical cleaning and mechanical loading were under consideration. This type of cleaning was considered the most practical means of removing impurities in the sizes below 4 in. It was decided to adopt mechanical cleaning and develop a system of mechanical loading that would be successful on No. 8 coal.

ELECTRICITY must be safeguarded everywhere that it is used. The conditions that exist underground make the use of safeguards more essential there than almost anywhere else. Electric Shock Electric shock is the greatest danger in connection with the use of electricity in mines, because conditions existing underground are so favorable to its occurrence. Men are often obliged to work in more or less uncertain light near bare wires that are carrying dangerous potentials. The fact that the men are standing on the earth practically connects them to one terminal of the electric generator. The most dangerous piece of electrical equipment underground is the trolley wire. It is necessarily bare and extends for long distances throughout a mine, often less than a man's height from the track rail. Sometimes the making up of trips of cars must be done near low-hanging trolley wires. All bare wires offer the same danger that trolley wires do, although not to the same extent. Apparatus that has accidentally come in contact with the ungrounded side of an electric circuit is almost as dangerous as the trolley wire. A severe and even fatal shock may be obtained by coming in contact with the frame of a motor or a switch box that has become charged with electricity, or "alive," as it is usually termed. It is also possible to obtain shocks from the frames of locomotives and cars if track. sanding, poor bonding or a similar cause has put a high resistance to earth in the path of the current.

The North-West Russia for 70 years is one the main producers of Cu, Ni, Co, Al, P, REE, Zr, Ti, Ta, Nb, Fe ores and other minerals in the Europe. The largest mining companies locates in the Murmansk region, and they extracts about 100 mln. tons of ores and damps up to 250 mln. tons of waste annually. Nevertheless an environmental situation in the region is stable due to rational management and treatment of wastes on a base of the Noosphere Concept for Nature-using suggested by Vladimir Vernadsky. The Concept was performed practically in the Fersman’ scheme of “non-waste mining and metallurgical complex”, published in the monograph “Minerals of the Kola Peninsula: current status – analyses – prognoses” (1941) and served till now as a sort of “Bible” for industry managers lightening a strategy for an industrial “trophic chain”. The recent status of this scheme is shown on the picture below, and one can see that our concept is coincide with modern ideology known as the “Industrial Ecology”. Moving along this mainstream in the Kola Peninsula since 1929, when the first mining company “Apatit” was established, we provided the water close circuit in mineral dressing plants, hydrometallurgical treatment of slag and tailings, productions of building materials and adsorbents of wastes. The innovation set of technologies designed by the Kola Science Centre allow recently to involve tailing damps in re-exploitation as the technogenic deposits of valuable raw materials for fertilizers, tanning and cleaning agents, pigments, concretes and etc.

Introduction During the last twenty years, science and industry have been strenuously endeavouring to discover new sources and new kinds of liquid fuels and to work out suitable chemical methods for their production. One of the new possibilities for the production of liquid fuel on a large scale is law-temperature carbonization of various grades of coal. The use of alcohol as motor spirit, in spite of its relatively low calorific value, is being widely investigated. Its production by fermentation of sugars, its recovery from the sulphite liquors of the paper industry, its production directly from wood and also from calcium carbide, have all been considered. At present the most promising line of investigation would appear to be the further development of those technical processes which yield liquid fuels from coal; since science has shown the possibility of preparing all kinds of liquid fuels and even the complete conversion of coal into oils. The present paper will consider briefly: 1. The production of primary tar by low temperature carbonization of coal. 2. The hydrogenation of coal. 3. The synthetic processes of Dr. Franz Fischer.

The determination of the number of primers necessary to efficiently initiate an explosive column charge is essential to good blasting. If the number of primer is insufficient, the total energy stored in the main charge will not be released. On the other hand, the use of too many primers will be counterproductive and raise the blasting cost. Tests were conducted by the authors to determine the correct priming procedure for a basalt quarry. This paper describes the results of those tests.
