The Tonkolili banded iron formations (BIF), Sierra Leone, host extensive iron ore deposits which are of economic signifi cance to the seaborne iron ore trade. The deposits are dominated by a strategic JORC compliant mineral resource of 11.6 Bt grading 30.1 per cent Fe comprised of primary magnetite mineralisation in the form of a fresh metamorphosed BIF featuring a uniform mineral assemblage of quartz-magnetite ± ferro-silicate minerals. Pilot plant metallurgical test work has demonstrated that the production of a magnetite concentrate is achievable using the established beneficiation techniques of magnetic separation and flotation. The concentrates arehigh-grade, and suitable for blast furnace or direct reduced iron pellet feed. The major challenge facing the development of such magnetite deposits at industry competitive production rates is the significant capital investment required for process plant and associated infrastructure.Two well-developed weathering zones exist within the deposits, and are associated with the progressive development of a tropical weathering profile overprinting the primary BIF. These zones feature a near surface hard indurated duricrust up to 60 m thick, and a soft progressively developed saprolite between duricrust and fresh BIF. These zones have been found to be amenable to producing iron ore products including DSO lump and sinter fines from the duricrust, and concentrate from the saprolite. Mineral resources sufficient to support commercial production of such iron ore products were defined by an intensive exploration program in 2010.African Minerals Limited has developed a three phase production strategy to progressively self fund the development of the Tonkolili strategic magnetite project by:• commencing a Phase I 12 Mt/a DSO operation in Quarter 4 2011,• increasing production in Phase II to 35 Mt/a with the commissioning of a saprolite beneficitation plant and associated infrastructure upgrades, and• developing a 45 Mt/a Phase III operation producing high-grade magnetite concentrate.The comparatively low capital and operating costs of a duricrust DSO lump and sinter fines operation coupled with its proximity to ground surface make it highly attractive for the generation of early cash flow for the Tonkolili project. Revenue from this early production may be used to selffund the subsequent development of phases requiring progressively more significant beneficiation plant and infrastructure.

Yeelirrie lies toward the center of Western Australia, 650 km (404 miles) northeast of Perth (Fig. 1). The ore reserves have been estimated as 52.5 kt (57,871 tons) of contained U3O8, at an average grade of 0.15%, of which almost two-thirds average 0.24% U3O8. the ore body is a thin, elliptical, more or less horizontal sheet measuring approximately 9 km (5.6 miles) in length, between 0.5 and 1.5 km (0.3 and 0.9 miles) in width, and up to 7 m (23 ft) in thickness, extending from the surface to a depth of 8 m (26 ft). In spite of its near surface position, there is only one small outcrop of significant mineralization. Carnotite is the only uranium mineral recognized so far, dispersed through a calcrete horizon, and deposited from circulating ground water which was also responsible for the carbonation of the clays completely filling an Early Tertiary drainage system. Calcrete, as seen at Yeelirrie, is quite distinct from the widespread, thin pedogenic horizons, as it often forms bodies many kilometers in length and up to 20 m (65.6 ft) in thickness, elongated parallel to the drainage lines. It is variously referred to as "valley calcrete" or "ground water calcrete" to emphasize the occurrence and mode of origin. The discovery of Yeelirrie in mid-1971 was the successful culmination of a grass-roots exploration program initiated in 1968 as part of Western Mining Cop's program of diversification from its historical position as a major gold producer. The object was simply to find an economic uranium deposit - with no constaints other than those normally taken as applying in the mineral search. There was, therefore, complete freedom in the selection of the exploration model, or models, to be applied and the areas to be considered, though the choice was inevitably influenced by both the nature of world occurrences and the local geology. One of the options avail- able was the sandstone environment. Yeelirrie was the direct result of pursuing this line of investigation through three sequential, but quite distinct, stages: first, a regional study; second, establishing a case for exploring the inland drainage systems of Western Australia; and finally, an evaluation of the calcrete environment. An assessment of the potential for sandstone-type deposits in Australia necessitated going back to first principles, since there were no known precedents in this country for guiding exploration and, as a consequence, the search need not be influenced by established prejudices. Previous uranium exploration during the 1950s had been preoccupied with vein-type deposits, and, although the sandstone environment was undoubtedly being examined in 1968, no discoveries had been announced to that time. When considering the necessary ingredients -a source of leachable uranium, a circulating ground water system, and a suitable reducing environment - it could be argued that considerable areas in the eastern part of the continent were theoretically prospective, but basin depth and the extensive superficial cover of Mesozoic and Cainozoic sediments presented considerable practical difficulties.

IN view of the immense amount of attention that silicosis has received in this country in the past few years, it is timely to review the status of the silicosis problem at present. Who gets silicosis? The individual exposed to the inhalation of free silica dust. The effects upon the individual depend upon the amount of silica inhaled or, in other words, the severity of exposure, rather than upon any special variation or susceptibility among those exposed. A considerable amount of study has been given to determine what may be the role of predisposing causes in the development of silicosis. To men-tion one instance, at the Picher Clinic careful records were kept of all previous illnesses of the men examined as well as abnormalities present at the time of examination. Examinations of over 27,000 miners were made during the years the clinic was conducted under governmental auspices-a very fair sized sample. The general conclusions from all this work were that the incidence of silicosis is not appreciably influenced by racial, structural, or other inherent qualities; it is influenced by acquired defects-particularly as these affect the lungs. That is to say, the average run of human beings respond similarly to similar exposures to silica dust and those whose lungs are already impaired by tuberculosis or other pulmonary disease acquire silicosis more readily than those with healthy lungs. It may well be, and there is some clinical evidence in support, that negroes acquire silicosis more readily than do whites, but the infection factor has not been so carefully studied among negroes exposed to silica as it has among whites. We know that tubercle infection is more prev-alent among negroes than among whites. There may be other factors concerned in the development of silicosis in negroes as compared to whites, but there is not available information upon which to base posi-tive statements.

The Gibralter Mines Ltd. complex is 61 km (38 miles) north of Williams Lake in central British Columbia, Fig. 1. The discovery of these deposits evolved in stages such that each stage revealed a bigger piece of the elephant. When the elephant was mostly revealed, Placer Development Ltd. brought the property into production. Although Gibralter is aporphyry copper deposit, it is certainly not a typical one. Copper and minor molybdenum mineralization occur in a foliated and saussuritized quartz diorite. Ore bodies tend to be tabular in form because foliation exerts a major control on localizing mineralization. A generalized geologic map of the Gibralter-Pollyanna area is shown in Fig. 2. Mineralization was first identified in 1917 in the Pollyanna area. Several shallow pits were sunk on flashy, but low grade, lenticular quartz veins. Duval Corp. made the initial commercial discovery, the Pollyanna ore body, on what were then called the Pollyanna claims. These claims, staked by R.C. Glen and C. Gennis in 1963, were the first to be optioned by Duval in British Columbia in October 1964. Placer Development joined Duval in late 1966 as a 50% joint venture partner, and after optioning the adjoining Gibralter claims, proceeded to evaluate and develop the four ore bodies that make up the Gibralter deposit. The Gibralter claims south of the Pollyanna claims provided the name for the Gibralter deposit.

THE first presentation of this paper was before the Pennsylvania Anthracite Section of the Institute in May, 1914, after which a committee was selected to verify and add to the data contained in the original paper. The author is indebted to G. W. Engel, H. W. Montz, R. V. Norris, and H. H. Otto, of this committee, for additional information. I also wish to acknowledge the courtesies extended me by a number of the mining companies for information relative to accidents, systems of proving, and mining practice. The paper should bring forth additional criticism and recommendations, which will be of value in establishing future practice relative to this subject. Throughout the northern anthracite field of Pennsylvania glacial and alluvial deposits of sand, gravel, and clay exist in varying quantities. The extent and character of these deposits are described by N. H. Darton in Bulletin 45 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, entitled, Sand Available for Filling Mine Workings in the Northern Anthracite Basin. It is estimated that the northern field contains 10,000,000,000 tons of these deposits, or a sufficient quantity to cover the 176 square miles of coal area to a depth of about 25 ft. These deposits of sand, etc., overlying the coal measures attain a maximum depth of more than 300 ft., and are usually saturated to such an extent as to render them semi-fluid. It is .this condition of fluidity that limits the mining of coal seams cropping in or in close proximity to these deposits, and it is in the interest of safer and more efficient mining methods under these conditions that the study of this -subject is here presented. The dangers incident to mining under deep deposits of sand have long been realized by operators in the northern anthracite field, and much has been done to prove the contour of the rock and vein croppings underlying these water-bearing deposits of sand and gravel.

Since 1907 Illinois has furnished about 15 per cent. of the United States output and about 10 per cent, of the world's production. The value of the output in 1913 is estimated at $307000,000, of which about $20,000,000 is profit. The present prosperity dates from 1905, but efforts have been made since 1865 to develop production and geologists have been very sanguine as to its future for over 25 years. Had the oil operators been as confident as the geologists, the field would have been opened at least 30 years earlier. On July 13, 1967 the San Bernardino County Planning Commission approved publicly a request by American Smelting and Refining Company for a zone variance to conduct a silver mining and milling operation in the Calico district, southern California, Coincidentally, on July 14 the U.S. Treasury halted its sales of silver, and the U.S. free market price quoted rose immediately from $1.30 to $1.77 per ounce. In its request to the commission Asarco stated that about 13,500 to 15,000 tons of rock would be moved daily by surface mining, including 7,000 tons of ore. The ore would be crushed to minus three-quarters inches and the silver recovered "by a chemical process." The grade of the ore was not given, but the company said that it might also recover barite as a byproduct, The operation would employ 150-160 people. Additional activity in the district includes exploration programs by Superior Oil Company and Calico Silver Mines, Ltd. History and production: In retrospect, as the price of silver began to rise in 1961 from 91 cents an ounce, and as Asarco began its exploration program in late 1964, a new era for an old bonanza silver district would seem to have begun. The Calico district has been mined for silver only on a very, very small scale since 1882 to 1896, when an estimated $12 to $20 million (perhaps 15 to 20 million troy ounces) of that metal was produced from the 50-odd mines of the district and vicinity. These mines include the Silver King, Oriental, Waterloo, Garfield, Odessa and Waterman (which is about 8 miles west of the district). Much smaller-valued amounts of barite, gold, lead, and copper also have been produced from the ore deposits of the district; and from 1884 to 1907 the region yielded about $9 million worth of borate minerals.

I want to limit my remarks to epigenetic ore deposits, but do not necessarily subscribe to the classic theories of hydrothermal ore deposition. I will consider an epigenetic deposit as a primary deposit in which the economic minerals have been introduced subsequent to the formation of the enclosing rock, regardless of the source. Past ore discoveries have been made to a great extent by prospecting techniques that have remained relatively constant over the last many decades. In many cases the discoveries have been enlarged or enhanced with the use of technical tools such as geophysics, but theoretical geology, which should serve as a foundation for exploration, has shown little progress of practical importance since the turn of the century.

Introduction This paper outlines the causes of underground fires at Noranda Mines and the precautionary measures taken to guard against such fi res. Shafts There are six shafts (Figures and lA) on the property, of which N os. 1 and 2 are abandoned. Nos. 3, 4, and 5 are the present working openings from surface and No 6 is an internal shaft. No. 3 is used primarily as a service shaft, while Nos.?1 and 5 are the main hoisting shafts. Orebodies The orebodies are of two distinct types. There are the massive sulphide bodies, and the areas of mineralized rhyolite containing gold values and a silica content high enough for fluxing purposes. The massive sulphide bodies contain chalcopyl'ite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor amounts of sphalerite and magnetite. The concentration of particular sulphides varies even within the same body. It is the areas high in pyrite, and to a lesser degree those, high in pyrrhotite, that are of particular interest.

The paper describes a geostatistical structural analysis of an 80 square mile lease of the Athabasca tar sands. Each step of the analysis is presented with the ultimate objective of condensing the principal structural characteristics of the chosen regionalised variables into the opera- tional form of the variogram model. The variogram model is then used to form kriged local and global estimates, with the corresponding estimation errors.

Flow maldistribution in the iron blast furnace has been studied analytically by the use of the vectorial form of the Ergun equation and experimentally via packed columns and a cold model of a blast furnace. Experimental results are presented showing the effect on fluid flow patterns of the following types of nonuniformities in a packed bed: the increased voidage at the wall ("wall effect"), the decreased voidage at the interface between layers of materials with different sizes and shapes, and the differences in resistance to flow of bulk regions of a column with different sizes and shapes. The proposed theory is applied to the calculation of fluid flow patterns for these nonuniformities. Velocity profiles, as calculated from these flow patterns, were found to agree reasonably well with experimental measurements obtained via hot wire anemometry techniques for laboratory scale packed columns. Calculated fluid flow patterns are presented for blast furnace burdens which show how flow patterns are affected by (a) coke segregation and (b) the relative differences in resistance to flow between coke and oxide pellet layers. For the cold model study, calculated flow patterns are presented based on photographs of a given burden distribution. The velocity profiles calculated from these flow patterns were found to agree reasonably well with the velocity profiles measured from the cold Model.

This paper describes a magazine security system using two readily available cellular telephone-based technologies. The system is comprised of vibration sensors and remote cameras. The system is used at a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) licensed explosives storage location in Pennsylvania to comply with PA Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) regulations. The system provides instant notification to the licensee via cellular modems, text messaging, phone call, and e-mail. Likewise, the licensee can control the system remotely over the internet and using text messaging commands. The vibration sensors attach to the door of the metal type I magazines magnetically and detect any movement or vibration. The cameras trigger on movement and thermal radiation changes and can also be triggered manually to check alarms received from the vibration sensors. The previous system was comprised of a base unit and magnetic strips. The magnetic strips were powered by a hard line from the control unit and mounted on the doors and top of magazine creating a bond, that when broken triggered an alarm. Our main issues with the unit were the delay in alert times and tech support. Because of these issues, we decided an upgrade was necessary. Compared to that previous system used at this site, these new systems are highly affordable, carefree and reliable.

The direct dissolution of zinc in an organic solution of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and kerosene was studied. The objective was to gain a better understanding of the fundamentals involved in the anodic step of the galvanic stripping process. Results showed that metallic zinc does dissolve spontaneously at ambient temperature by an electrochemical mechanism and the presence of additional oxygen activated the process. When oxygen was removed by prior nitrogen sparging, dissolution did not occur indicating a depolarizing cathodic reaction is necessary. The concentration of water in the organic also affected the rate of dissolution. A factorially designed experiment was made using four variables at two levels selected by evaluating results from previous screening tests. D2EHPA concentration, surface area and agitation were all found to be significant for the values chosen. Temperature was less significant and it was found that zinc dissolution is probably a diffusion or mixed controlled process, as indicated by the calculated activation energy of 6 kcal/mole.

FROM the time of its establishment in 1933, the Tennessee Valley Authority has been active in the field of phosphates. Under the T.V.A. Act it has a broad Congressional mandate to guide a unified development of the resources of the region for the long-range benefit of the people. As one phase of this function, it is directed to co-operate with farmers in the experimental large-scale use of improved fertilizers and development of better fertilizer practices. Following careful study, it was concluded that the objectives of this phase could best be attained by soil rebuilding through the use of phosphatic fertilizer and lime in an improved farm management sys- tem. This activity was launched through a program of test and demonstration on farms and simultaneous technical investigations to develop new and improved phosphatic fertilizers. Phosphorus has since become a keystone of the Authority's resource development and conservation program. Human effort is being conserved by phosphate utilization on the farm, and mineral conservation has been promoted by technical developments in phosphate mining and manufacturing operations.

This paper gives an estimation of the future requirements of the western world in relation to energy re-sources. It then goes on to outline the role that atomic power -with its basic raw material, uranium -will play in supplying these energy requirements. Canada's position in this picture is covered, and some interesting forecasts are made. Introduction I T is possible that the following remarks will appear to have more to do with power than uranium. However, to fully comprehend what is in store for the Canadian uranium mining industry, we must be able to estimate the potential requirement, and, to do this satisfactorily, a thorough understanding of the circumstances that will give rise to that demand is necessary. The growing need for electrical energy will play by far the major role, as large tonnages of uranium will be required for its generation. The nuclear weapon has, up to the present, comprised the major market for uranium.

The Glenharold Mine is a surface mine operated by Consolidation Coal Company. The mine is located approximately 90 kilometers (55 miles) northwest of Bismarck, and 3 kilometers (2 miles) southeast of Stanton in west central North Dakota. Glenharold has a nominal design capacity of 3.0 million metric tons per year (3.3 million short tons per year). With the exception of local coal sales, this production supplies fuel for Basin Electric's Leland Olds generating station, a mine mouth power plant. The mine has 175 hourly and 50 salary employees. The Glenharold reserve extends over 210 square kilometers (80 square miles). The mining area is on a dissected plateau between the broad flat Missouri River flood plain to the north and the gently rolling uplands to the south. Erosion by intermittently flowing streams has produced many narrow, steep-walled, drainage ways. Mining begins at the 6 meter (20 foot) cover line and continues to the economic recovery line.

The processing of pyrite concentrates may be accomplished with a preliminary enrichment due to withdrawal of iron sulfides from initial concentrate. The withdrawal of iron sulfides is possible with the help of magnetic separation when the magnetic iron sulfides (pyrrhotites) separate from non-magnetic fraction?the sulfides of non-ferrous metals. The conversion of non-magnetic pyrite to magnetic pyrrhotites of adjusted structure occurs because of roasting with the withdrawal a part of sulfur. The resultant pyrrhotites are strong ferromagnetic with hexagonal structure. This paper contains results of studying magnetic properties of pyrrhotites, findings of the de-composition of initial pyrite with the consequence homogenizing of product and hardening of product of decomposition in liquid nitrogen. Defined the conditions of steady regime autogenous roasting, at resultant products possess coefficient of magnetization, and this can be used magnetic separation for separating ferromagnetic pyrrhotites from gangues and non-magnetic sulfides of non-ferrous metals. This technology of pyrrhotizing roasting is recommended for effecting in industrial condition. The initial materials and products of roasting subjected to chemical, thermogravimetric, Moss-bauer spectroscopy and X-ray analysis, defined the magnetic properties.

Most mineral products exported from Australia to Japan, with the notable exception of coal, are purchased with weight and quality determined on discharge. Sampling of imported minerals for purpose of payment is done at facilities owned and operated by the purchaser. The selling shipper is represented at the weighing, sampling and testing by an independent inspection group who supervises the whole procedure. Sampling and testing are done within the provisions of the contract between the two parties, and normally in accordance with the relevant Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). These JIS specify such things as the number and mass of increments to be taken; the practice of taking these increments; the method of determination of moisture, size distribution and quality. The JIS concerned with sampling however, are meant to be basic guides rather than rigid rules. Hence sampling and testing practice varies from plant to plant. In general Japanese sampling facilities and methods are elaborate and efficient. Opportunity is given for the discussion of varying technical viewpoints between consumer and shipper. However the resolution of differences and the implementation of changes normally takes a long time. Such discussions seem best reduced by prior contract agreement on reasonable specifications and detailed testing methods. The independent inspectors

SMCRA contains five principal regulatory provisions that form the basis for its implementation: Performance Standards Performance standard safe intended to ensure that all surface mining is conducted in a way that protects the environment and the public and ensures that the mined land is restored to productive use following mining. Permits Before developing a surface or underground coal mine, an operator must have a permit issued under SMCRA. An application for a permit to conduct a surface coal mining operation is a detailed document that consists of text and numeric data describing the proposed mining and reclamation. Information must be furnished on pre-mining environmental conditions, existing land use, proposed mining and reclamation, how the performance standards will be met, and the post-mining land use. This provides the regulatory authority with the information necessary to determine that the operation can be conducted in accordance with the regulations. Performance Bonds Before a permit can be granted, an operator must post a performance bond sufficient to cover the cost of reclaiming the site in the event the operator fails to complete reclamation. The bond is not fully released until all performance standards have been met and reclamation of the site has been determined to be successful after five years in the East and Midwest, and after 10 years in the arid West. However, the bond can be partially released as various phases of reclamation are completed. Inspection and Enforcement If a violation of SMCRA or of a state surface mining and reclamation law is observed, an inspector issues a notice of violation to the operator. The violation must be corrected within a specific time, and the operator may also have to pay a fine based on the severity of the violation. If the violation is not corrected, acessation order is issued to immediately stop active coal mining, and the operator must pay a fine. If a violation is especially serious (for example, creates an Following reclamation, the land was immediately put back into agricultural production. As a result, SMCRA protects these resources in two ways: It prohibits mining within the boundaries of national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, trails, wild and scenic rivers, wilderness and recreation areas; in areas which will adversely affect sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and within a restricted distance of occupied dwellings, public roads, buildings, parks, schools, churches, and cemeteries; and Provides a process that allows anyone whose interests may be adversely affected by proposed mining to petition to have specific lands designated unsuitable for mining.

This paper presents the water management plan of the Mae Moh Project in the North of Thailand, which includes a large lignite opencast mine and thermal power plants. Lignite production will increase from the present 5.5 million tons per annum to approximately 20 million tons per annum by 1995 when the pit area will be about 20 sq.km. and the depth at over 300 meters. Seven power plants are proposed of which two are under construction. The total capacity to be installed is 2,925 MW. The principles considered for water management are firstly flood protection, including drainage of the mining pit and diversion of the Mae Moh stream away from proposed future mining areas; and secondly, a plan to meet the water requirement of the thermal power plants, while maintaining downstream supplies for irrigation and other purposes. The limited annual run-off of Mae Moh and Mae Chang watershed basins are inadequate for the proposed power plants. A study has been prepared to compare two approaches, namely conveying water from remote watersheds to meet the water requirement of the power plants up to total installed capacity; or by limiting future total generation, at the existing site, to only 2025 MV.
