Twinned metal crystals are usually designated as either deformation twins or annealing twins. If twins are to be classified according to the treatment the metal has undergone just prior to the observation of the twins, there are two other possible groups: (1) solidification twins,† when observed in the as-solidified or as-cast condition, and (2) transformation twins,† when observed in a metal which has been cooled from above an allotropic transformation temperature. McKeehan has demonstrated that ferrite does, occasionally at least, contain twinned structures2. The twins, which he studied by optical methods, were obtained during the preparation of iron single crystals by very slow cooling through A3. He proved that the twin relation was actually that which previous investigators had predicted; namely, twinning along three planes of the form (112). Since McKeehan's discovery, little or no attention has been given to this transformation twinning of alpha iron, or to the possibility that it might occur at all speeds of cooling from above A3 instead of merely during the preparation of single crystals. McKeehan's twins were evidently regarded as interesting only in proving that a body-centered cubic metal could form twinned structures—at least under certain conditions. It is generally believed that iron seldom if ever forms annealing twins. Certainly the straight-line banding which is so abundant in annealed face-centered cubic metals is characteristically absent in iron annealed below A3. However, O'Neil13 has studied "twin-like" crystals in annealed alpha iron and concludes that the specimen he studied actually contailled a few annealing twins. Tamura4 as reported "twin-like" crystals both in wrought iron and mild steel; specimens of the latter were annealed above and below A3 and showed "twin-like" crystals after both kinds of treatments.

The brass-rolling industry has not had a great deal of experience with antimony in its product. There have been some recent excursions with antimony as a corrosion inhibitor in tubes, but in sheet brass it has been regarded with apprehension and generally avoided. This is not to say that contaminations have never occurred, and probably a great many brass mill men have had their own ideas on the effect of such contamination. Our own views were based upon certain experiences some years ago with strip castings that split lengthwise in the early stages of rolling. The nature of this splitting is shown in Fig. I, from a photograph taken in 1922 as a record of 20 bars of 65-35 common brass made with an antimonial brand of copper. These bars were cast 6¾ in. wide by I in. thick by 45 in. long. In the first pass through the rolls, 19 of the 20 split lengthwise throughout their length, while each half curved outward in a wide arc as it emerged from the rolls. In those days, if splitting was not a frequent occurrence, it was not unfamiliar. One can recall periods of short duration when large amounts of common brass would behave in this way. There was nothing imaginary about these spells. The affected metal would split lengthwise in the breakdown rolls, and no maneuvering of mill practice made any difference. The condition would descend like a plague, demoralize the mill for several days, and disappear. It is doubtful if anyone knew the cause—however many explanations may have been current. With the advent of the First World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB1) in Denmark in 2003 and the subsequent biannual meetings, together with other sampling conferences held on a regular basis, the central tenets of sound sampling practice and theory are spreading throughout the minerals industry. End-users and project houses, or groups who execute the projects, are all now better-informed about the principles of ?correct? sampling and preparation. To support this, many large mining companies now have their own in-house champion who will advise and ensure that the supply of sampling equipment is correct in terms of design and application, which further contributes to improved metallurgical accounting. The presence of a sampling champion also ensures that consistent and acceptable standards in regard to sampling practice are maintained throughout the group. This has, in turn, placed a greater degree of responsibility on the shoulders of sampling equipment suppliers, in terms of their equipment designs and product offerings, as well as applications knowledge for effective installation of equipment on client plants. This paper attempts to highlight the significant challenges that sampling equipment manufacturers often face with regard to complying with the newly understood requirements of best practice and sampling equipment design. Manufacturers invariably face issues with end-users or project houses, including project cost control, restricted headroom for samplers in plant layouts, and a lack of knowledge in certain quarters. These all have a potentially negative effect on the final outcome of a proposed sampling solution or implemented project. In reality, what is intended by all parties and what is ultimately installed are at times very different, with undesirable consequences for all concerned. Against this challenging background, there are, however, a number of instances where intent and implementation are complementary, with very satisfactory results. The Bureau of Mines has determined the standard Gibbs energies (AGf°) of CoS1.035 (cobalt sulfide) and Ni2.515S2 (nickel sulfide) with high-temperature galvanic cells using stabilized Zr02 (zirconia) as the electrolyte. Potential measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, CoS1.035, CoO, S02(g, 1 atm)//Zr02//02(g, 0.0114 atm), Pt, with the overall cell reaction C0S1.035(c) + 1.535 02(g, 0.0114 atm) = CoO(c) + 1.035 S02(g)¬ These results, combined with the best available data for ?Gf° of CoO and S02 from the literature, give the standard Gibbs energy of formation of CoS1.035 for the reaction Co(c) + 0 5175 S2(g) = CoS1.035(c) ?Gf° = -38.890 + 18.87 x 10-3T ± 0.185 kcal/mole (866.0 - 1,104.9 K), where temperature (T) is expressed in kelvins. Similar measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, N12.515S2, NiO, S02(g, 1 atm)//Zr02//02(g, 0.0122 atm), Pt, with the overall cell reaction Ni2.515S2(c) + 3.2575 02(g, 0.0122 atm) = 2.515 NiO(c) + 2 S02(g). Combination of these results with data for ?Gfo of NiO and S02 from the literature yields the standard Gibbs energy of formation of Ni2.515S2 for the reaction 2.515 Ni(c) + S2(g) = Ni2.S1SS2(c) ?Gf° -65.377 + 24.67 x 10-3T ± 0.541 kcal/mole (968.6 -1,053.7 K).

Heavy mineral sand deposits are a source for the economically important element titanium, which is contained in minerals such as ilmenite and rutile. In heavy mineral deposits ilmenite displays various degrees of alteration. Natural weathering of ilmenite involves the removal of Fe and thus results in an increase in the Ti-content. Minerals such as pseudorutile, ferropseudobrookite, anatase and the ill-defined mineral aggregate leucoxene, which consists mainly of various amounts of remnant ilmenite, pseudorutile, ferropseudobrookite and anatase, are typical replacement products of ilmenite. Ferropseudobrookite occurs as a recrystallised, optically and chemically distinct mineral phase. Textural relationships suggest a diversity of physicochemical conditions including weathering and metamorphism that led to the formation of complex mineral assemblages and textures. In the heavy minerals industry the alteration products of ilmenite are generally referred to as æaltered ilmeniteÆ and/or leucoxene. The distinction between æaltered ilmeniteÆ and leucoxene is not consequently defined and is very much dependent on economic factors and specific mining operations (ie determined by deposit specific mineral assemblages). Generally the term leucoxene is used in the heavy minerals industry as a collective description for ilmenite alteration products with TiO2-components ranging from 65 - 95 per cent. A detailed comparative mineralogical investigation including microscopic, SEM and QEMSCAN« techniques show that it is possible to identify and quantify the replacement products of ilmenite on a micron scale. QEMSCAN« generated particle maps were graphically compared with photomicrographs taken by applying reflective light microscopy. The resulting information can be integrated over the entire sample with respect to composition, absolute and relative mineral abundances, grain sizes, volumes, densities, textural relationships and liberation potentials. This provides a powerful tool for a first appraisal of the physicochemical behaviour of bulk samples and individual particles during metallurgical processing.

PRINCIPLES OF MAGNETIC SEPARATION The application of magnetic separators relies on the different behavior of individual mineral particles under the influence of magnetic forces. When exposed to a magnetic field, all materials are affected in some way. According to whether materials are attracted or repelled by the magnetic field, they are designated paramagnetic or diamagnetic, respectively. Paramagnetic materials are attracted along lines of magnetic force from points of lower magnetic field intensity to points of higher magnetic field intensity. The very strong response of some materials to a magnetic field is sometimes designated ferromagnetic and the particles attracted frequently retain magnetic properties after the applied magnetic field is removed. Diamagnetic materials are repelled along the lines of magnetic force from points of high magnetic intensity to points of lower field intensity. Only limited commercial use of diamagnetic effects has been made. For practical applications, the paramagnetic groupings are: 1. Strongly magnetic (ferromagnetic) 2. Magnetic 3. Weakly Magnetic 4. Non-magnetic The limits of these groupings are not well defined and will vary in some mineral species. Only a few minerals are ferromagnetic (magnetite is an example) and arbitrarily some investigators have selected 10,000 gauss, or 1 Telsa, as the dividing line between low and high intensity magnetic fields. I. S. Wells has developed a table indicating the magnetic intensity required to separate a selected grouping of minerals which is shown in Table 1 on page 2. A similar table has been developed by Carpco Inc. of Jacksonville, Florida in conjunction with the use of its high tension separators. This table, Table 2 on page 3 shows other minerals grouped in the broader categories cited above. Magnetic separation methods are used either to separate valuable minerals from nonmagnetic waste or magnetic impurities or other valuable magnetic minerals from bulk nonmagnetic values. Increasingly, owners and operators of underground mines that have a long history are realising the economic and practical advantages of capturing historic mining records and converting hand drafted plans of underground mine workings into an electronic collection of attributed 3D wireframes that can be used for mine planning and exploration purposes. This case study looks at the conversion of historic data to 3D models, with examples from three historic mining operations where this task has been undertaken: West Wits gold projects in South Africa, Northern MiningÆs Radzimowice gold mine in Poland and Avalon ResourcesÆ Viscaria copper mine in Sweden. West Wits Mining Limited holds leases in the West Rand Goldfield of the Witwatersrand Basin, which has significant gold and uranium resources that have been mined since the 1890s. The Radzimowice Gold mine, Poland, hosts Au-Cu-As-Ag mineralisation that has been exploited since the 15th to 16th centuries. The Viscaria Copper mine is located in northern Sweden and was operational during a 15 year mining period to 1997. The process of data collection, management and modelling is inherently challenging for these mines; specifically, collation of historical information, organising this data into logical arrangements that could be validated and sequentially creating 3D models using geo-spatial computer software. Despite the challenges and costs involved in creating a digital 3D model, the conversion has added significant value to each project through identifying areas of potential new resources, aiding planning and presentation to stakeholders. This paper outlines the processes involved in conversion from paper records to a 3D model, the challenges encountered and how these can be overcome, and importantly, the practical and economic advantages of undertaking such a task for explorers, miners and investors.

PERSONAL INJURY ACCIDENTS According to statistics compiled by the National Safety Council, US Bureau of Mines, American Medical Association, and other agencies, accidental injuries cause more deaths than all the leading diseases. NO one is immune to an accident. Probably the best way to describe an accident is to say that it is an unexpected happening. The automobile driver is not expecting a terrifying crash, the electrician does not expect to be electrocuted, nor is the coal miner expecting the roof to fall on him. All personal injuries will not result in death. There is a multitude of victims who arc living proof of what accidents can mean to an individual-victims who are blind, paralytic, missing arms, legs, etc. In most instances the earning power of these individuals is gone, and they arc utterly dependent upon family or welfare. For many years there seemed to be an attitude that prevailed in industrial America that accidents were inevitable, and that so many fatalities and injuries should be expected. This, of course, was utter nonsense. Since the birth of such organizations as The National Safety Council, American Society of Safety Engineers, and the US Bureau of Mines, much progress has been made in reducing accidents. The enactment of compensation laws greatly contributed to the progress that has been made. Does this mean that all accidents can be prevented? Unfortunately, it does not. Human psychology indicates that men will work unsafely or perform unsafe acts for the following reasons : 1) Lack of Knowledge or skill. 2) Conflicting motivations, such as: (a) to be more conformable, (b) to save time or effort, (c) to be accepted by a group. 3) Physical or mental condition. Nearly everyone desires his own safety, hut not all individuals are willing to do what they know to do to insure their own safety.

The brilliant and very original matter in Professor Jeffries' discussion† should rank not only as an independent paper, but as a most important one. In particular, the explanation which it gives of the remarkable Sauveur phenomenon, over which so many of us have puzzled long and hard, is so clear, complete, and cogent as to go far toward establishing Professor Jeffries' hypothesis. The very leatures of Professor Sauveur's photographs which fit this hypothesis so exactly are reproduced in Chap-pell's photographs of steel coarsened under somewhat different conditions.' The ideas developed by these discoveries are so novel that convenicnce of language seems to call for new conventional terms for expressing them. In what follows here I propose certain terms for this end, for criticism and improvement, and I attempt to generalize from Professor Jeffries' hypotheses. Generally speaking, a given set of grains which undergo no growth in the cold will, when the temperature is raised progrcssively, start to grow on reaching a certain temperature, and will continue growing at all higher temperatures. The "germinative" temperature is that at which growth begins, quite as the conditions which cause a seed to grow are "germinative." We have then an inert temperature range below the germinative temperature, and a growth range above it, the germinative temperature being the limit between these two ranges. So, too, a germinant grain is one which is at its germinative temperature, and hence beginning to grow, while inert grains are those below their own germinative temperature, and the term "growing grains" includes those which are germinant and those which are above their germinative temperature. These last could be called " supergerminant" if the distinction should be needed. "Germinative temperature" seems better than "critical temperature

POWELL*-I would like to ask either Mr. Ash or Mr. Eaton if they know of any place where the Mine Inspectors' for¬mula has been used that water has flowed from one colliery to the other. W. L. EATON (authors' reply)-We have made considerable study but we have not gotten around to very many of the barrier pillars. I would not say that any or all of them have been designed to the strict figures of this formula. Most of those ex¬amined will not hold back the water that they are supposed to hold back. E. T. POWELL-If the pillar remains ac¬cording to the Mine Inspectors' formula? W. L. EATON-We have not found very many where the provisions were followed. E. T. POWELL-Where the Mine Inspec¬tors' formula has been fully complied with, have there been failures or not? W. L. EATON-I cannot say. Most of these barrier pillars probably were designed in accordance with this formula, but most of them, if they were so designed, are not in that shape now because a large number of them will not hold back the water; they have been reinforced, and they are punc¬tured in various places. Holes have been driven through them to relieve the hydro¬static pressure to avoid a failure. They do not dare to have a failure. In many instances, the barrier is punc¬tured to avoid a failure. In order to mine their coal safely, many companies must pump water from mines that were aban¬doned many years ago. R. MAIZE-That is true, Mr. Eaton, but do you know of any case where a barrier pillar actually failed and flooded an ad¬joining mine when the pillar had been left in accordance with the Mine Inspectors formula?

In 2004, underground coal mines in the United States reported 3,405 injuries to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Of these, 17 percent were associated with the use of bolting machines, 8 percent with continuous miners, and 4 percent each with scoop/load-haul-dump (LHD), shuttle cars and personnel transport. Analysis of the injury narratives identified five hazards that required attention. They are rock falling from supported roof inadvertent or incorrect operation of bolting machine controls, handling continuous miner cable, collisions while driving underground vehicles and driving or traveling in underground vehicles on rough roadways. The rate of lost-time injuries has steadily decreased during the past 10 years (from more than 10 per 100 FTE in 1995, to six in 2004). However, underground coal mining remains a hazardous industry. One of the contributors to this elevated injury risk is working with or near underground coal mining equipment. Roof bolting machines and continuous miners have been consistently identified as high risk equipment. They account for approximately 24 percent of all injuries to underground coal miners (Sanders and Shaw, 1989). LHD's, shuttle cars and personnel transports are also associated with injuries in underground coal mines (Burgess-Limerick, 2005). Conventional analyses of injury statistics typically provide tables detailing the breakdown of injuries by body part nature of injury or mechanism of injury. Such analyses are worthwhile and may be helpful in tracking broad trends over time. Further information is available in the narrative text field completed for each injury reported. The types of substructures developed during high-temperature creep of (110)[001]-oriented polycrys-talline Fe-3.1 pct Si were examined by electroetching of dislocation sites. Edge dislocations were observed to accumulate adjacent to grain boundaries and poly-gonize perpendicular to their glide planes to form a "Pile-up" of nearly parallel tilt boundaries. The dislocation density developed within the grains during steady-state creep was found to increase with increasing stress. The formation of periodically spaced groups of edge dislocations along grain boundaries was observed, and it was proposed that these formed to relive bending stresses at grain boundary shear .faults. Grain boundary serrations developed at these faults, and it was suggested that this was a result of localized grain boundary migration at the polygonized groups. THE authors have conducted a series of high-temperature creep tests on (110)[001]-oriented poly-crystalline Fe-3.1 pct Si sheet. The creep specimens were examined at various stages of creep by means of electrolytic etching of dislocation sites using the chrome-acetic acid solution developed by Morris.' Hibbard and Dunn2 have demonstrated that the etch pits produced with this technique correspond to single dislocations. It is the purpose of this paper to present and discuss the dislocation substructures which were formed during high-temperature creep at constant stress. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The polycrystalline Fe-3.1 pct Si sheet employed in this study contained a (110)[001] texture. The chemical compositions of copper feed streams are becoming increasingly complex following the growing demand for metals and corresponding shortages of primary sources. The optimisation of process conditions requires an accurate description of phase equilibria and thermodynamics. Integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling research program on the characterisation of the complex, multi-component, multi-phase gas-slag-matte-speiss-metal-solids Cu2O-PbO-ZnO-Al2O3- CaO-MgO-FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2-S-(As-Bi-Ni-Sb-Sn-Ag-Au) system is being carried out to support companies undertaking the pyrometallurgical primary production and recycling of copper. The experiments involve high temperature equilibration in controlled gas atmospheres, rapid quenching and direct measurement of equilibrium phase compositions with quantitative microanalytical techniques, including electron probe X- ray microanalysis and Laser Ablation ICP-MS. The thermodynamic modelling is undertaken using FactSage computer package with advanced thermodynamic solution models. The continuing development of research methodologies has resulted in significant advances in research outcomes. Implementation of the results of these fundamental studies involves an ongoing collaboration of researchers and industry technologists. An overview of recent progress in research, implementation and applications in industrial practice are given in the paper. INTRODUCTION Rapidly developing technologies increase the demand for various metals in number and volumes. Modern technological devices such as mobile phones, computers, other electronic devices, have dozens of metals—all those metals have to be a) produced and b) recycled. The fast transition in mobility from fossil energy delivered through combustion to renewable energy first stored in bakeries and delivered through electric engines introduce a significant change in the metal demand in terms of both type and volume of metals. Pyrometallurgy is playing a key role in supporting these changes in our industrialised society.

The Ravenswood Mine in North Queensland is the first gold mine developed by Carpentaria Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of MIM Holdings Ltd. Carpentaria Exploration Pty Ltd began exploration at Ravenswood in 1978. However initial exploration of the main gold producing area (Buck Reef East) commenced in March 1987 when exploration rights to four key leases were secured. A rapid, co-ordinated exploration and development program produced gold from a heap leach operation nine months after the first costeans were dug at Buck Reef East. To treat higher grade ore found at depth in the Buck Reef East pit and the metallurgically more difficult Buck Reef West ore, a carbon in pulp plant was commissioned in May 1988. The mine is currently producing at a rate of approximately 40 000 ounces of gold per year. Ore at Ravenswood is hosted by hydrothermally altered diorites and tonalites of the Ravenswood Granodiorite complex. Alteration is controlled by planes of permeability formed by joints, shear zones and dilational breccias. The complex orebody geometry resulting from these controls required very detailed surface and drill exploration for adequate definition. Carpentaria's need for early cash flow meant that economic, mining and metallurgical considerations governed choices of exploration techniques, program timing, material and data collected. The initial reserve of 1.1 mt @ 2.87 g/t Au was defined by sectional polygonal methods. Grade control is based on geologic mapping and blast hole or channel sample assays. Ore is batched through the crusher and sampled to monitor grade control and mining performance. Minimal dilution has occurred. Gold content is greater than predicted by the reserve. Sprinkling of heaps commenced in November 1987. Changes have been made to the pad design and to the method of heap construction. Heap leach ore is treated at a rate of 400 000 tpa.

This paper describes the objectives and the procedures involved in short-term mine planning, comments on the type of computer systems available, and describes in detail a computer-aided short-term planning and scheduling system known as STEPS.IntroductionThe mine planning department of any o pen-pit mining operation performs a wide variety of different tasks. However, their primary concern is the preparation of detailed long-and short-term mine plans. These mine plan s will define the long-term operating strategies and definitive everyday working plan s for the ongoing development of the open pit.In this day and age, when operating costs have spiralled upwards due to inflation , and product revenues have decreased due to depressed economies and poor markets, it is vitally important for all aspects of the mining operation, including mine planning, to be efficient and cost effective.There are numerous options available for planning engineers when generating a mine plan. A cost effective mine plan must investigate all these options and select the optimum. When using manual planning techniques, it is often impossible to evaluate all the available options. To do this, and to produce an optimum mine plan, a computer is required.This paper discusses mine planning, with emphasis toward the short-term plan and comments on how the processes may be computerized. It also describes in detail, a computer software system called STEPS, which has been designed as an interactive graphics, computer-aided short -term mine planning and scheduling tool."

This month, Tax Notes examines tax legislation from a different angle, and sees some bright spots.The following article is based on a paper presented by the author at the International Gold Symposium in Rio de Janeiro in August 1989Introduction""No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the Legislature is in session.”With one federal government, ten provincial governments, and two territorial governments all claiming to have constitutional rights to tax and otherwise regulate Canada's mining industry, and with each of these thirteen governments pursuing their respective rights with some vigor, government involvement in one way or another is an accepted way of life in the industry. While one's initial reaction to government involvement in an industry might be one of scepticism or fear, generally speaking the federal, provincial, and territorial governments in Canada tend to be pro-mining. They recognize the importance of the mining industry to Canada, especially in terms of job creation and exports. It is not surprising, then, to find that an array of valuable fiscal incentives are available to the industry through federal and provincial legislation.This paper summarizes the principal incentives that are inherent in Canada's tax legislation, as well as the Canadian Exploration Incentive Program. Although it is beyond the scope of this paper to deal with all of the incentives that are available, it is noted that various forms of federal or provincial assistance are also available outside of specific legislation, through negotiation with government departments. This latter type of assistance is generally directed toward helping with the cost of infrastructure such as roads or hydro lines, or Jess often toward loan guarantees or similar financing assistance."

Microscopic examinations of quenched (beta) 60:40 copper-zinc and quenched (beta) 74:26 copper-tin alloys have frequently disclosed long, thin parallel bands or markings within the polyhedral beta grains. Apparently, it has been accepted that these markings are mechanical twin bands, although there is no published account of experimental data that might tend to substantiate this belief for the copper-zinc system, and only meager evidence has been submitted for the copper-tin system. Johnsonl0 commented upon the markings he observed after deforming a quenched brass of 55.6 per cent copper and 44.4 per cent zinc. Clark's papers4 on the heat-treatment of Muntz metal contain many photomicrographs of markings in beta brass; these she referred to as Neumann bands (inasmuch as repolishing and re-etching failed to remove them) and stated that markings present in Muntz metal as quenched were the result of shock imparted during the polishing operation. Van Wert18 first suggested that these parallel markings in quenched beta brass (60:40) might be alpha precipitated along certain crystallographic planes of the matrix lattice. He showed that upon reheating the specimens to temperatures below 800" C., obvious precipitation of alpha within the large beta grains first occurred at the markings. In a discussion of this paper, Phillips stated (pp. 505-507) that in his opinion the markings observed by Van Wert were mechanical twins resulting from contraction strains produced during the quenching operation. In a study of segregate structures in beta copper-tin, Smith17 observed that in the quenched beta phase (containing 74.92 per cent Cu) parallel . bands or markings very similar to those in metastable beta brass could be
