GWILLIAM H. CLAMER (Philadelphia, Pa.).-About 16,000 tons of tin is used annually in the production of white metals. The real reason for using the so-called genuine babbitt, which is a high-tin base babbitt, perhaps in the majority of cases, is that tin has always been. a high-priced metal and people naturally believe that what they pay a high price for must be good. Mr. Jones has shown that the common metal, lead, is a superior base for most purposes for Which babbitt metal is used. The addition of lead is often looked upon as adulterant to genuine babbitt, and specifications for this reason rigidly restrict the lead content. A sub-committee of the Society for Testing Materials, at the meeting in June, presented tentative specifications on babbitt metal, in which were included twelve formulas, containing from zero to: 20, per cent. of tin, and several containing from 65 and 92 per cent. Comalco's Bell Bay smelter produces some 94 000 t.p.a. of primary aluminium in the form of foundry alloys, extrusion billet and rolling blocks. The extrusion billet and rolling block are produced by a process, in which molten aluminium is poured into an open ended water cooled mould of the required shape. The bottom of the mould is initially closed off by a dummy or starting block. Primary cooling takes place at the mould wall and secondary cooling is achieved by direct water sprays onto the out side shell of the product. Careful preparation of the molten alumin- ium is essential if stringent alloy specific- ation limits are to be met. Optimum casting temperature must be maintained within a narrow range and metal cleanliness is important to ensure a consistent product. The separate outputs of Burma and India in 1937 were 274,664,365 gal. valued at £4,474,147 and 75,657,857 gal. valued at £1,030,591, respectively. The corresponding figures for the year 1938 were 263,823,-265 gal. valued at £3,766,810 and 87,082,371 gal. valued at £1,234,563, respectively, which is a slight increase in total quantities but a fall in value for the combined outputs of Burma and India. The appreciable increase from India in 1938 is due to an increase of over 11 million gallons from Attock and a little from Digboi, while the decrease from Burma is due to a fall of nearly 9 million gallons from Yenangyaung, over 3 million gallons from Yenangyat (and Lanywa) and half a million gallons from Minbu (Table 1). The 'amount' of gasoline produced from natural gas during the year 1938 was 10,587,291 gal. in Burma and 496,163 gal. in the Punjab.

As mining progressed through the Girilambone oxide orebodies, down to the primary sulphide zones, each successive stratiform layer yielded copper bearing ores of changing mineralogy and grade. Constant changes, innovations and optimisation were required to be applied to the heap leach, solvent extraction and electrowinning operations, to efficiently produce LME Grade A quality copper cathodes from this ore. The changing ore types required various crushing, stacking and heap leach irrigation methods to ensure that optimum recovery from the predominantly low-grade copper ores was efficiently achieved. Subsequently, innovations such as heap aeration and heap rejuvenation techniques were implemented. The constant selective removal of copper from the maturing heap leach liquors, coupled with an increase in iron(III) concentration, required solvent extraction optimisation. Changes to the original solvent extraction circuit configuration, combined with changes in operating parameters and procedures, allowed effective processing with changing heap liquor compositions. The electrowinning tankhouse was also upgraded and optimised through continued testwork and monitoring, to maximise cathode production and quality

In presenting the paper, Mr. Davey quoted subsequent work which yielded k, at miscibility gap composition, of about 50.We can confirm the authors' findings for k j 300 for nearly pure tin to k 2 about 50 (average 47) from our own experience and from repeat experiments on materials described by the authors, at 1150°C.During laboratory-scale trials we also found confirmation of the authors' view that it is more difficult to reach equilibrium from the high-iron (in slag) side than from the low-iron (high-tin) side. Working from the high-iron side tends to yield results that point to a high k, leading to optimistic values of iron/tin ratio in final slags. In practice the smelting of a tin concentrate, unless it is exceptionally low in tin and high in iron, must yield initially a tin-rich slag and therefore equilibrium can only be reached from the "tinny" side.

The United States Steel Corp. in cooperation with the United States Government is conducting a large-scale methane drainage field demonstration using stimulated vertical boreholes drilled in advance of mining. A grid pattern of 23 boreholes, isolating approximately 1.5 km2 of coalbed area, has been drilled to the lower bench of the Mary Lee coalbed, Jefferson County, Alabama. Upon completion of drilling operations, various hydraulic stimulation treatments utilizing nitrogen-generated foam, water, and gelled fluid were performed to enhance the rate of methane gas removal. Production from the grid pattern began in September 1977 and continued as the last borehole was placed on production during October 1980. To date, in excess of 33,800,000 m3 of methane gas has been drained as a result of this effort. Underground mining operations were approximately 3.2 km from the grid pattern when production began and have currently progressed to within 1.6 km. Underground interception of the grid is expected in 1986.

This brief overview of the history of Brown Coal mining in Victoria is a luncheon presentation -I do not intend to make it indigestible with extensive listings of resources or production. There is a vast pantry of collated historical records and of vari- ous predictive studies available for the enquired with a hearty digestion. A gourmet collation is provided in The Aus IMM Monograph No 11 published in 1984 entitled "Victoria's Brown Coal-A HUGE FORTUNE IN CHANCERY", currently still on offer by the Institute and available at a bargain price in the foyer at this conference. Monograph No 11 also provides a feast of excellent references on the theme of Victorian Brown Coal assembled by the several contributors. In contrast, my presentation paper is a fast-food service, extracts from the printed paper only-you have no choice-you "get what you get" and in small quantity. Investment decisions in the Australian mining industry are often made without awareness of the impact of risk on project outcomes. A fundamental change in thinking is required to move away from the traditional attitude of æcushioning the blowÆ towards a measured approach to project risk. Such an approach involves quantifying and understanding project uncertainty so that investments may be shielded from downside risk while at the same time exposed to upside potential. Communication and collaboration between study teams and corporate financial managers must be improved before the industry can improve its project investment record. Monte-Carlo simulation provides a way to quantify and understand investment risk, but its accuracy depends on how well the variability of input parameters is estimated. Research in this area is currently centred on quantifying uncertainty in mineral resource estimation using new conditional simulation techniques, but a less-rigorous method can be applied in practice to begin the education process and develop the required awareness at board level.

With statistics still incomplete, it appears that the safety record of the mineral industry for 1955 will do well to hold its own in comparison with 1954. On the one hand, metal mining shows an improvement in its record, due in part to intensive campaigns for preventing ground fall accidents. Coal mining, on the other hand, is showing a poorer record in 1955 than for the preceding year. While no major disasters occurred during the year, increased fatalities resulted from ground fall, haulage, and machinery accidents. It seems probable that increased job training may serve to improve the situation. Health: Utilization of diesel equipment continues to increase in noncoal mines, in spite of existing prejudice. In 1955 two types of diesel-driven tractors and one shuttle car were approved by the USBM. Where diesel engines are used controlled ventilation is mandatory in order to keep the CO content under 20 ppm, but such ventilation is not difficult to achieve with normal equipment.

INTRODUCTION The United States has an abundance of coal reserves in thick seams. Most of these resources are in the West. Surface mining operations in thick seams are highly efficient, particularly in the West, but methods for mining thick seams underground are very limited. The percentage of resource recovery in deep mining of thick seams is often as low as 30 percent. It is estimated that there are 45 billion tons of coal reserves for underground mining in seams greater than 10-ft thick in the western states alone. With such a large available reserve base and low rates of recovery, the need to develop the technology to mine these thick reserves is quite evident. As the definition of a thick seam varies widely from country to country, a thick seam is defined here as any seam where the height is such that it is not minable in a single pass with available mining equipment.

Airborne respirable Diesel Particulate (DP) presents an additional health hazard in that it has been shown to be mutagenic. This problem is of increasing concern as more coal mines introduce diesel vehicles. If the DP present in coal mine air is to be controlled it must first be measured. This paper describes development of the laser Raman spectroscopic measurement of the amount of DP in DP/coal mixtures collected on filters in the laboratory and in coal mines. The Raman technique provides a chemical measure of the carbonaceous material in each component, and is not dependent upon particle size. When this work was begun there were no known analytical methods for this measurement. Side-by-side in-mine comparisons of the results obtained from Raman, neutron activation analysis, and size selective analyses (MOUDI and personal samplers) are presented. The neutron activation and size selective analyses were obtained by the USBM Twin Cities Research Center and University of Minnesota. Good agreement has been found among these three methods.

The first seismograph was developed around 132 AD. Much has happened since then. The “modern” seismograph (> 1920) has seen a lot of changes. From falling pin seismographs to magnetic tape units to today’s Z-curve analysis models, the blasting seismograph remains a necessary and useful tool to the blasting community. But why so many changes? What forces drive the advancement of the seismograph? There are many answers and aspects to this question. Research, regulation, and technological advances are the primary forces behind innovation in our industry. But these three forces also drive each other. Research drove our industry from displacement seismographs to particle velocity seismographs. Technology took us from 80 pound seismographs to units weighing less than 5 pounds. Regulation (and litigation) - the driving forces behind the Z-curve analysis units. How have these innovations helped today’s blaster? Have there been any negatives? It is important for today’s blaster to understand how we got here and why.

If confronted with the problem of pumping a mixture of slime-free sand, gravel and boulders up to six in. in diameter, at the rate of 175 tons per hr in one single-stage pump against a static head of 90 ft and a total head of 140 ft, of which 20 is on the suction side, an engineer might be forgiven for backing away from the job, especially if he were also told that the pump wearing parts must have a minimum hardness of 550 Brine11 for the sake of abrasion resistance. Yet precisely that feat has been accomplished in the gravel pit of John B. LaGarde, Inc., near Anniston, Ala. The pump used is of decidedly novel design and its successful operation since installation 1.5 years ago suggests that it may be of timely interest in numerous other applications in the mining industry, such as pump transportation of coal washer refuse or rock from open-pit's without unduly fine crushing.

Western Mining Corp. has announced plans to expand its mining operations at Kambalda, and to build a nickel refinery at Kwinana, near Perth, Western Australia. The refinery will use the ammonia-leach hydrogen reduction processes of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., and it is expected that by 1970, when the expansion is scheduled for completion, Western will be the world's fourth largest nickel producer. Although estimates have not been finalized, the total cost is expected to be about $55 million. The mine and mill facilities at Kambalda, which began production in June 1967, are now producing at the rate of 11 million lb of contained nickel per year. The company estimates the sulfide ore reserves at Kambalda and St. Ives at 10.4 million tons averaging an usually high grade of 3.8% nickel, or about 790 million lb of contained nickel. In addition, silicate and oxidized ores have been located in both areas.

In developing nations, novel mineral processing methods like bacterial leaching are gaining prominence. The principles and practices for isolation and preservation of cultures used in bacterial leaching are discussed with special reference to cultures used in leaching copper from Indian ores. In all, 145 potentially useful microorganisms such as iron- and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria were isolated from various ecosystems of the copper mining areas in the country. The major organisms isolated by enrichment culture technique belonged to T. ferrooxidans and T. thiooxidans species. In addition, thermophilic cultures like Sulfolobus sp. and thermophilic thiobacilli were also isolated. The process of copper leaching was scaled up to the 300-kg level in PVC columns. Since the preservation of efficient cultures in active state was vitally important, a new method was devised that preserved the activity of thiobacilli for a period of more than two years. The novel method of storage in sterile chalcopyrite ore at 8°C can be considered an important advance.

IN October, 1926, the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. began the operation of its new leaching plant, which has a capacity to handle 8600 dry tons of ore daily and produce therefrom approximately 160,000 lb. of electrolytic copper per day. (See Fig. 1.) The capacity of the three sets is 36,000 amp. at 320 volts. A description of the metallurgical processes of this plant was. given in a paper by H. W. There is an intuitive tendency to equate rock strength with rock stability, yet the two must be evaluated separately. A slope in strong hard rock is not necessarily stable, nor is a slope in weathered weak rock necessarily unstable. In some cases the reverse is true, depending on the geometry of joints and weak planes. The time element is a matter of special concern, that is how suddenly the failure begins and how rapidly it progresses. Sudden failures can be catastrophic, whereas creep usually is not. In soils and weathered rock, the process is usually incremental and is more likely to give some warning of impending failure. With careful observation, the failure process in these materials can be detected and monitored instrumentally or visually. In some cases, the slope may be stabilized, reinforced or modified. When that is not possible, there is usually enough time on this type of slope to remove men and equipment from the area before complete failure occurs.

The global copper industry faces a technological challenge to develop processing schemes for more complex and impure ores and concentrates. Group 15 elements (As, Sb, and Bi) represent impurities that are troublesome both in terms of environmental impact and metallurgical processing. The so-call "dirty" copper concentrates are either unacceptable for smelting and refining or incur high penalties. The behavior of the Group 15 elements is of critical importance in maintaining product quality and process performance. During copper electrorefining, these impurities are released to the electrolyte by electrochemical dissolution of the anode. Depending mainly on temperature, concentration, and oxidation state these elements can spontaneously coprecipitate from the electrolyte. Some of these precipitates are referred to as floating slimes and their formation can have extremely detrimental effects on cathode purity. In this paper, the mechanism of floating slimes formation will be discussed and the fundamental thermochemistry will be reviewed and analyzed in relation to solubility properties.
