Pregnant leach solutions from waste of printed circuit boards (WPCB) leaching contain many impurity metals (Fe in particular) at significant levels. These impurities should be reduced to acceptable levels to avoid problems in downstream recovery processes e.g., low current efficiencies in electro-winning of copper from sulfate solutions in the presence of ferric. In this study, removal of iron in the form of goethite from synthetic (30 g/L Cu2+ and 1 M SO42-) and real leach solutions of WPCB was studied in some detail. The influences of initial concentration of iron (1-4.5 g/L Fe3+), pH (2.5-4.0), temperature (80-90°C) and seeding (23.5 g/L) were investigated over a period of 4 h. A significant increase in the iron precipitation was observed (i.e., from 68% to 96% over 4 h) with rising the pH from 2.5 to 4.0. The addition of seeds had also increased the removal rate over 4 h albeit to a limited extent i.e., from 96% to 99%. For the real leach solutions of sulfate (H2SO4-H2O2) and sulfate/chloride leaching (H2SO4-CuSO4-NaCl), precipitation of iron was found to be 63-73% (pH 2.5) and 93-98% (pH 4.0), respectively. The precipitates were further characterised by SEM-EDS analysis which showed the presence of copper (1-25%) in the precipitates indicating significant copper co-precipitation from the solution. These copper losses can be attributed to the formation of copper compounds such as anthlerite and brochantite within the range of pH (2.5-4.0) tested. This study showed that iron can be readily removed from synthetic/real leach solutions of WPCBs to a large extent (=93%) at the expense of high copper losses particularly at pH 4.0.

In spite of our deep conviction that it would be wrong for the United States to enter World War II, when, after Pearl Harbor, we were actually in it, I felt that I must do all I could to help. The country had been so good to me that I could not decently stay on the sidelines. My first thought was that I might help with supply and administration in the Air Force, as in World War I. So on the evening of Pearl Harbor I wired the chief of our Air Force in Washington saying that I had been on Gen. William Mitchell's staff in World War I and was offering my services again. I received a noncommital answer, but after a couple of weeks was told to take my physical examination. I passed it, but nothing further happened. After helping to make plans for the wartime operations of Summit King and Desert Silver, Dorothy and I went to New York to spend Christmas with Molly and Peter, both of whom were in college in the East. I had to complete a report on the Argonaut mine in California first, though the war made my recommendations of dubious validity. Before Christmas I received wires from Temple Bridgeman, Phil Wilson, and other friends who had taken positions with government agencies responsible for securing mineral products needed for war use. They urged me to join them. It was evidently a case of not whether but how I could be most useful. After six uncertain days with the family in New York I took the night train to Washington on the 28th of December. I had a hectic day there. First I saw Arthur Bunker and Phil Wilson at what became the Aluminum and Magnesium Division of the War Production Board. Their office was in an old converted barracks. Tahmoor Mine is located in the southern Sydney Basin 80km south-west of Sydney and produces 1.2 MT of Bulli Coal annually. Bord and pillar methods used to date will be supplemented by a longwall system. Difficult roof conditions have been experienced since mining began in 1979. A dominantly horizontal stressfield promotes shear failure in the thinly interbedded roof sequence of shales, laminites, siltstones and fine sandstones. General roof conditions and failure characteristics are related to the angle between the roadway direction and the principal horizontal stress direction. The apparent stressfield changes direction, magnitude and the ratio of principal horizontal components across the mine workings in response to both in situ and mining induced causes. Initial roof support of 5 x 2.1 m bolts per W-strap at in intervals, with mesh, was upgraded to include RSJ's in order to support areas of failed roof. This support system was inefficient and costly. A third system of support emphasizes roof reinforcement with full resin encapsulation of 2.1 m bolts in W-straps. The number of bolts per strap (6-8), extra butterfly straps and bolts, and W-strap spacing is determined for each area by expected roof and stress conditions. Intersections are pre-bolted and ribs are supported in some areas. Pillar dimensions, order of drivage and roadway width have each been altered to improve roof control. The intensity of roof deformation at the face varies from panel to panel and causes development rates to decrease to 30% of the maximum. 1. Manager, Tahmoor Mine, Tahmoor, N.S.W. 2. Roof conditions in each area of the mine are characterised and then projected to future development areas based on the relationship between stressfield orientation, relative roadway direction and face conditions. Future improvements of strata control involve defining support design parameters for the range of mine conditions already seen at Tahmoor.

SRCL has used rock anchors to support footwall slopes since 1985. This paper outlines design considerations and performance of rock anchor support systems at SRCL.Three case histories are included that illustrate the design process for supporting steeply dipping footwall slopes using rock anchors.IntroductionWestern Canada contains vast reserves of high grade coking coal largely located in two belts within the Rocky Mountain Foothills straddling the Alberta/British Columbia border. There are about one billion tonnes of ""clean"" coking coal reserves (Romaniuk and Naidu, 1986) situated near existing mining infrastructure. Within the reserve areas shown in Figure I, a total of six producers operate 10 large mines linked with ports situated on Canada's west coast. Al! of the producers operate conventional shovel/truck surface pits.Surface mineable reserves within some of the mountain coal mines are located on dip slopes or where the geologic structure has thickened the coal near the surface, creating low strip ratio targets. Footwall slopes in these mines are developed parallel to bedding, thus minimizing waste extraction and preventing undercutting of potentially unstable strata. The base of the mineable coal measures in both north and south regions is marked by massive quartz sandstone units (Torrens Member and Moose Mountain Member) which often form the footwall. Footwalls developed within this basal sandstone unit can attain very high unbenched heights often with little risk of instability. In cases where the footwall is developed on weaker strata above this basal unit, stability considerations control slope height when bedding dips exceed about 30°. In these situations it is desirable to assess the benefits of artificial support to increase the unbenched footwall slope height."

It is widely distributed and therefore has been available in almost every country and has been employed for a variety of purposes. Its earliest use was for buildings, since it is more easily quarried and dressed than most other kinds of rocks and so could be utilized by early inhabitants, poorly equipped with tools. The next use was in the manufacture of lime, which was employed by the ancients in mortar. These two uses of limestone are still all important, but they have been overshadowed in scores of regions by literally hundreds of new applications for raw limestone or products made from it. Anyone familiar with modern manufacturing processes can quickly call to mind many industries in which limestones are essential, and new uses are continually coming to notice. Any enumeration would probably be incomplete and soon out of date. Origin of Limestone Disregarding details and unusual types concerning which often there is insufficient evidence and considerable difference of opinion, limestones have been formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate from solution through the action of organisms, both plants and animals, or in a limited number of instances by chemical reactions without the intervention of living forms. Some of the organisms extracted the calcareous material in order to build up hard structures, either as bony skeletons or as coverings (clams, snails, etc.), whereas others in their life functions emitted substances that resulted in the precipitation of the soluble constituents outside the organisms themselves. In some instances the organisms utilized only calcium carbonate but in some cases other compounds as well were precipitated. Various materials have been found in the hard parts of animals, and for that reason it is almost impossible to find a pure natural limestone; that is, one composed entirely of CaCO3.

Roof falls are the major cause of fatalities in the, coal mining industry and the prevention of roof failure is a major concern of mine management. Many ground failures observed underground are associated with geological discontinuities such as fractures, faults, clay veins and sandstone channels inherent in the earth's crust (Rinkenberger, 1977). To properly design a mine requires an advance knowledge of such geologic discontinuities and this is not always available from exploration boreholes. The use of remote sensing for mine planning is a relatively new development, and is at present being used primarily by the Roof Control Support Branches of the Mane Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in Denver and Pittsburgh. However, technical advances, coupled with public access to previously unavailable photographic products, make remote sensing a useful aid in the difficult process of mine planning (Jansky and McCabe, 1979). Remote sensing techniques are being used to predict the location of geological features in advance of mining which influence roof conditions. The features appear on photographic images as linears, which are plotted on a mine map and serve as a planning tool for mine management. Also, during development of entries toward a linear, mining personnel will be on alert for signs of unstable roof conditions which might normally go undetected. Preventive action can then be taken before a fall occurs. A confusing aspect in remote sensing, analyses is terminology such as linear, lineament, fracture trace and joint. In this report the term "linear" refers to a line-like appearance on an aerial photograph or satellite imagery which signifies a naturally occurring geologic feature no the earth's surface. The objective of this paper is to describe the use of remote sensing techniques as an aid in predicting geological discontinuities which might produce hazardous roof conditions to a mine operating in the Pocahontas No. 4 Seam in southern West Virginia. Mine projections and roof control plans will he developed based on this and other available information such as data from cored drill holes.

"Rational exploration requires the prior selection of areas possessing excellent geological potential and minimum hazards to commercial development . Within an over-all strategy of grass-roots exploration, two procedures for selecting areas for (i) coal and (ii) metals exploration are described. The procedures explicitly balance infrastructure requirements and environmental concerns for areas of geological merit not alienated in parks and reserves. Through consensus, priorities are attached to those areas meriting closer scrutiny and field reconnaissance.IntroductionMining companies need to know that having made a potentially economic discovery, they will be allowed to develop it with minimum delay and at reasonable cost. The environment for exploration in British Columbia is complex and recent experience suggests that conditions are not becoming any easier. Conflicts over land use issues, preservation and economic development are common. The high cost of exploration requires that the risks should be offset where possible by: (i) carefully selecting the areas in which to work (ii) conducting operations in a responsible manner, and (iii) working cooperatively with the community of interests. This paper concerns the first action: prior selection of areas.To aid exploration planning at Suncor, a procedure was developed to grade those areas of the province possessing favourable geology according to the ease with which a mine might be developed . This had to be done within the constraints of the company's over-all approach to exploration. This emphasizes ""grass-roots"" exploration of self-generated projects in British Columbia. In addition, having selected a favourable belt of rocks, it is intended to persevere there while steadily adding to the accumulated data base and local experience. Hence, it is intended to concentrate on an area. This implies a long-term commitment to an area which in turn increases the importance of the original selection.Suncor's search is directed to finding base and precious metals in intrusive and volcanic environments, and export quality coal."

"Extractive metallurgy was divided into the three sectors pyro-, hydro-, and electrometallurgy in 1959 when Professor Joseph Newton at the Idaho School of Mines in Moscow mentioned this in his book Extractive Metallurgy. Pioneer hydrometallurgists who built this discipline can be traced to the alchemists in the ninth century. It is now a mature subject of great importance in which pressure plays a vital role. Short biographies of some hydrometallurgists and the processes they invented are briefly outlined.INTRODUCTIONHydrometallurgy is the use of aqueous solutions to recover metals from ores. It is a relatively new discipline when compared with pyrometallurgy the use of fire to melt ores and recover metals which was practiced in ancient times. Hydrometallurgy can be traced to the time of alchemists whose concern was the transmutation of base metals into gold. Although alchemists did not succeed in their venture yet they described many reagents that are useful today. For example, they prepared sulfuric acid by distillation of iron vitriol, muriatic acid by distillation of sulfuric acid with salt, and nitric acid by reaction of sulfuric acid by reaction of sulfuric acid with salpeter. Jabir Ibn Hayyan the Muslim alchemist who lived in the ninth century (Figure 1) described aqua regia a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acid that can dissolve gold although either acid has no action on gold. THE MIDDLE AGESIn the Middle Ages, it was reported that copper was recovered at Rio Tinto in Spain by allowing copper-containing pyrite to be exposed in piles to the action of air and rain. Copper sulfate solution obtained was treated with pieces of iron to precipitate metallic copper—a process that was called cementation. Georgius Agricola (1494–1555) (Figure 2) a medical doctor in Saxony who used to visit mines and smelters to examine miners and metal workers, described in his book De Re Metallica the parting of gold, i.e., separating of silver from gold by acids."

THE Enos Coal Mining Co. owns an area underlaid by coal, of approximately 5000 acres. This property is situated 9 miles from Oakland City, in the southern part of Indiana. The mine has been in operation 5 years, during which time some 350 acres have been stripped, and stripping is now proceeding at the rate of about 100 acres per year. TOPOGRAPHY These coal lands consist of gently-rolling agricultural fields which in times past were farmed for wheat. There is no timber and but very little brush to contend with. The overburden varies from 10 to 60 ft. in depth. A thin bed of slate overlies the coal, followed by limestone, which varies from 3 to 15 ft.; this, in turn, is followed by sandstone, slate, shale and clay. There is a very wide variation in the thickness of all of these beds. The coal has an average thickness of 5 ft., and is a good grade of high-volatile bituminous. MINING OPERATIONS Briefly, the sequence of operations is: drilling holes with churn drills; blasting with L. 0. X.; stripping overburden to uncover coal and, finally taking up the coal, which is sent to a tipple for cleaning and sizing. In order to show what is being accomplished by the use of L. 0. X., results will be shown from May to November, 1926, inclusive, and compared to the same period in 1925. No work was done in No. 1 pit during May, 1925, hence all figures are unduly low for this month. Drilling There are in use 8 No. 44 Loomis clipper drills, caterpillar traction with gasoline engines; recently these were equipped with extra heavy stems, measuring 26 ft. overall and 4 ½ in. dia., to increase the speed of drilling. In addition, 4 No. 1 ½ G non-traction drills have been acquired, and are used to save the time of the larger drills when recleaning is necessary.

"Countercurrent decantation circuits(CCD) are often employed in hydrometallurgy to effect solids-liquid separation in combination with a barren solution wash to reduce losses of valuable solution component(s) from the tails. Bechtel Corporation uses its BEMSIM flowsheet-modelling PC computer program to simulate a CCD circuit where the ""dirty"" wash solution contains significant amounts of soluble components. An algorithm successfully models this condition and is simplified to a single expression when the wash solution is a ""clean"" solution containing no solubles. The CCD calculation module is compared to operating data from uranium and nickel-cobalt CCD circuits.IntroductionHydrometallurgical process schemes have often relied on countercurrent washing methods to reduce soluble losses of valuable product in the tails. Commonly used equipment to effect this operation is a CCD circuit of N thickeners in series, where a slurry is fed to thickener I and a wash solution to thickener N; clear pregnant solution overflows thickener I and washed tails exit as underflow from thickener N. CCD circuits of this type are typically employed when the solids tend to slime heavily and where a filter is not economic.A typical CCD circuit usually employs from two to five thickeners and can employ either a ""clean"" washing solution of, say, pure water or else the hydrometallurgical circuit may generate a ""dirty"" barren solution containing an appreciable amount of soluble component which may be advantageously returned to the process as CCD wash solution. Various authors have treated the case for clean washing solutions (Svarkovsky 1977, Merritt 1970). For the case of dirty wash solutions, an algorithm has been developed to enable efficient modelling by the BEMSIM computer program, because the need for an accurate method to calculate soluble losses is required when performing an economic trade-off analysis of the value of product lost in the tails as a function of the number of thickeners."

During August, two eastern Kentucky coal miners died in a roof fall during retreat mining operations. They had just finished extracting one pillar block and were moving to the next one when the intersection they were standing in collapsed. Regrettably, this was not an isolated incident. Since the end of 2000, there have been 28 ground fall fatalities in U.S. coal mines. Of these, 10 occurred during pillar recovery operations. Although pillar recovery has been associated with about one third of recent ground fall fatalities, it accounts for only about 10% of U.S. underground coal production. Statistically, a coal miner engaged in pillar recovery is several times more likely to be killed in a ground fall than a miner on an advancing section of a longwall. Pillar recovery is dangerous because it creates an inherently unstable situation. Once the pillars are extracted, the roof is expected to cave. Safe pillar recovery does not mean preventing roof collapse, it means ensuring that it only occurs after the miners have completed their work and have left the area. Fortunately, there are a number of proven techniques that can greatty reduce the hazards of pillar recovery. These include better mine planning, improved roof support, and safer work procedures. The goal of this article is to describe the most significant "risk factors" associated with pillar recovery, and prescribe control techniques that, taken together, can reduce the overall risk to miners. The conclusions are based on extensive studies conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) that have included detailed analysis of every fatal retreat mining incident since 1992 (25 incidents resulting in 30 fatalities). Risk reduction strategies for pillar recovery can be divided into three main groups: Global Stability: Prevention of section- wide pillar failure; Local Stability: Prevention of roof falls in the working area; and Work procedures and worker location: Minimizing exposure to hazardous areas.

"Projections of demand for Alberta coal indicate a quadrupling of current production rates to some 70 million tonnes/year by the end of the century. About half of this output-comprised of subbituminous coal-will be required within the province, primarily for generation of electric energy. The remainder-roughly 70 per cent high-volatile bituminous (hvb) steam coal and 30 per cent medium- or low-volatile bituminous (mvb/lvb) metallurgical coal-will be exported, principally to Pacific Rim and Western European countries. Direct employment in mining and coal processing is projected to increase from the present ca. 3000 to at least 12,000 persons.This paper presents separate forecasts for subbituminous, hvb and mvb/lvb coal production in the period 1982-2000; notes a number of possible developments that could substantially modify these forecasts; and briefly discusses attendant infrastructure requirements. Attention is drawn to potential shortages of qualified manpower and to threatening inadequacies of transportation facilities.IntroductionDespite the dislocations triggered by the 1973 'oil crisis', energy budgets of Western industrial countries are mostly still in the very early stages of the anticipated transition to greater reliance on coal. Shift s to coal are still more often only talked about than being implemented; and the public policies which are essential for timely development of facilities for producing, transporting and using coal are in many instances not yet even broadly formulated, let alone enunciated.In these circumstances, long-range projections of coal demand and supply-even if restricted to internal requirements- are subject to greater uncertainties than usually afflict such forecasts.On the demand side of the equation, these uncertainties arise ultimately from linkages between a need for coal and the availability and pricing of OPEC oil. The current surplus of oil on world markets, which has recently forced substantial reductions of posted prices, is undoubtedly a transient phenomenon that is unlikely to have any long-term impact."

"Scientists throughout the world have observed radioactive disequilibrium in the uranium decay series. Radiometric and fluorometric determinations of U in plants from the Goldfields district and in sediments and rocks from the Beaverlodge district exhibit marked radioactive disequilibrium. The eU/U ratio in plants rooted in mineralized ground shifts from greater than unity to less than unity for those rooted in background soils. A similar shift is observed in the transition from rocks to stream sediments and to lake sediments in the Beaverlodge district.Results of a Rn-Ra-U survey of lake bottoms in the Key Lake district show that anomalous hydromorphic U from U mineralization is parallelled by anomalous Rn, even though there is much less Ra in the lake-bottom sediments than one would expect from the amount of U present. IntroductionDisequilibrium in the U decay series has been studied for many years and is observed in almost all surficial environments. Rosholt (1959) measured U, 234Pa, 23O'fh, 226Ra, 222Rn, and 210Pb in a large number of U ores and outlined six types of situations to explain disequilibrium. Davy (1974) outlines the geological significance of radioactive disequilibrium situations with respect to exploration. Levinson and Coetzee (1978) discuss possible mechanisms by which separations of parent and daughter elements are affected and suggest analytical pitfalls that may be encountered in the use of radiometric techniques when disequilibrium has occurred. Generally, it is the oxyphile and easily complexed parent 238U (with its associated isotopes 235 U and 234U) that is leached from rocks and soils at a faster rate than are the daughters, 230Th, 226Ra, 2loPb, and 206Pb. This mobilized U is adsorbed on sediments in streams and lakes, or enters groundwaters, where it is eventually precipitated under reducing conditions, occasionally in oregrade concentrations. Bauxite resources were primarily in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and South America. Only five countries combined, Australia, Brazil, Guinea, India, and Jamaica, contained most of the total world reserves available for extraction under current economic conditions and accounted for nearly 80 % of world production of bauxite. World bauxite and alumina production declined and prices for smelter-grade alumina remained below the $200/mt level during 1993 because of growing aluminum inventories on international markets and declining worldwide demand. The United States imported bauxite primarily from Australia, Brazil, Guinea, and Jamaica. U.S. alumina plant capacity remained essentially unchanged throughout 1993, but apparent capacity utilization decreased by the close of 1993. Chromium Most of the world's known resources and reserves of chromite are located in India, Kazakhstan, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. India, Kazakhstan, and South Africa accounted for 73 % of world production of chromite. The two largest producers of chromite, Kazakhstan and South Africa, were in the process of major economic and political change during 1993. South Africa's production and exports of chromite continued to fall during 1993, because of weak international demand and a flood of cheap metal from the former U.S.S.R. and China into world markets. Despite a significant increase in production, South Africa's ferrochrome producers continued to operate below capacity in 1993. Prior o the dissolution of the U.S.S.R., Kazakhstan was a major internal supplier of chromite ore to the U.S.S.R. consumer, but subsequent decline in demand led to a downward trend of chromite production in Kazakhstan and increasing exports to Europe during 1992 and 1993. The United States consumed, about 10% of world chromite ore production in various forms of imported materials. The United States imported nearly one-half of its required chromium contained in chromite ore and chromium ferroalloys and metal from South Africa; the remainder was from the minor producers Turkey, Yugoslavia, Zimbabwe, and others.

As part of its research on advanced mining technology, the U.S. Bureau of Mines emphasizes studies on in situ leach mining. This research enables the Bureau to develop technical information that can allow mining companies to adopt in situ leach mining methods. Research results should help to remove the technical and economic barriers currently hindering the development of commercial in situ leach mining operations. This report contains papers summarizing results of Bureau research on various aspects of in situ leach mining. A featured topic is the cooperative field experiment of the Bureau and Santa Cruz Joint Venture in a copper deposit near Casa Grande, AZ. Discussions in-clude an overview of the entire project, cost modeling, environmental permitting, laboratory core-leaching experiments, petrographic studies, and an evaluation of the geologic structure in the region. In addition, papers describe hydrologic modeling and geophysical studies of solution flow during leaching. Preliminary geochemical modeling studies are also summarized. A final paper describes a nonionic chemical additive with potential for significantly reducing the high costs of drilling in in situ leach mining.

"A major Canadian chromite deposit at Bird River, Manitoba is one of the largest known chromite reserves in North America but it exhibits low chromium contents and low chromium to iron ratios. Commercial beneficiation techniques permit these ores to be upgraded to concentrations which, however, remain inferior to most other ores and concentrates used worldwide f or production of high-carbon ferrochromium. Analyses for reduction of low-grade concentrates by submerged-arc electrofurnace techniques predict chromium contents between 45.9% and 51% for a high-carbon ferrochromium alloy. Relatively high over-all chromium recoveries between 79.5% and 91. 1% can be achieved. Alloy compositions for Cr, Fe, C and Si are determined for various burdens with low-grade concentrates. Consumption data per ton contained chromium are obtained for electric power, coke, concentrate, quartzite and limestone. The data are compared with those of high-carbon ferrochromium producers in South Africa. Economic aspects are discussed and compared with a South African reference study.IntroductionThe present ferrochromium demand in the western world is estimated at approximately 1.7 Mt with a consumption of approximately 0.36 Mt in the U.S.III and 0.03 Mt in Canada'-', A low estimate of the installed production capacity for ferrochromium in the non -communist world is 2.4 Mt. This production capacity of ferrochromium by far exceeds the demand, which is also evident from the fact that no shortage in supply of ferrochromium to the world markets was encountered in the past. Supply-demand comparisons therefore suggest that in the foreseeable future no new chromite or chromium producers should enter the world markets unless superior chromites or superior technologies are successful in competing with existing producers. Neither one of these conditions exist presently in Ca nada or the U.S., although essentially no ferrochromium is produced and no chromite is mined in these countries at the present time."

"Heap leaching, currently being applied in the treatment of low-grade ores in the south western United States, is shown to have potential for use in north western Ontario. The history and operation of the process are described, and cost comparisons are given.IntroductionHeap leaching is a simple, low-cost method of recovering gold from low-grade ore. Although it is not currently being used in Canada on a production scale, it is being used extensively, and successfully, in the southwestern United States as well as elsewhere in the world. Especially suited for large deposits of very low -grade ore, it also appears to be practical for use on small, high-grade deposits because it avoids the high capital costs of mills. Eveleth (1980) and others suggest that the capital and operating costs required for heap leaching are approximately 20% and 40% respectively of conventional milling methods.Northwestern Ontario is noted for its large number of undeveloped, small, high-grade gold deposits. Although there are a number o f larger and higher-grade deposits in the area as well, it is the relatively small undeveloped deposits which would benefit most from heap leaching, if it could be demonstrated to be a viable extraction method.To assess the significance of these small deposits, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources recently commissioned a consultants' study of the gold reserves in certain parts of northwestern Ontario. This report, titled ""Feasibility of Small-Scale Gold Mining in Northwestern Ontario"", by J.N. Neilson and R.C.E. Bray (1981, OGS Open File Report 5332), documents 106 known gold deposits having sufficient information to calculate gold reserves. A total of over 7.8 million tons having a weighted average grade of 0.19 oz of gold per ton were compiled in the proven, probable and possible categories, with an additional 8.2 million tons in the speculative category. Many of these deposits could be mined by open-pit methods."

Mill filling is an important operational parameter in a SAG mill circuit and by its control and optimisation it can produce significant improvements in production capacity and energy efficiency. However, it is industry practice to report mill load as the total output given by load cells, or kPa for systems based on lubrication bearing back pressure, rather than the actual percent total mill filling.Ball trajectory is another critical parameter as overthrow can result in accelerated liner wear and possibly liner failure whilst underthrow can result in reduced grinding action. The assessment of ball trajectory cannot be done in isolation as the toe of the charge needs to be determined to make any meaningful assessment. Thus both total percent mill filling and mill trajectory are critical parameters; however neither is reported or available to metallurgy or processing teams in real time or a regular basis.In this study the performance of a fixed speed SAG mill was assessed and optimised by employing mill trajectory models and using the JKMRC power model to calculate percent total mill filling. Power Curves, which correlate ball filling, mill filling and mill power, were also developed. The Power Curves, with additional knowledge from the trajectory models allowed for the identification of optimal operating regions for the mill.CITATION:Toor, P, 2015.
