With depth, many gold ores become sulfidic with minerals such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite becoming prevalent. In addition, many underground gold mines use tailings backfill to bind and store the waste. In these cases, acid mine drainage (AMD) can become an issue. One approach to the control of AMD is desulfurisation whereby the sulfide minerals are removed prior to disposal. Four sulfide tailings samples, representing different ore types and gold and base metal operations, were selected for assessment and testing using simple physical beneficiation techniques. The aim was to determine the extent to which mineral processing methods were suitable for separating sulfides from non-sulfides and for extracting potentially marketable by-products from the tailings. In order to streamline the testing procedure a simple diagnostic separation technique was developed to enable quick screening of bulk sulfide tailings for suitability for reprocessing. The testing procedure involved detailed characterisation and a sequential set of testing regimes based on simple unit processes including water washing, classification, gravity concentration, magnetic separation and bulk flotation. The preliminary test results indicate each unit process can play an important part in producing effective sulfide/non-sulfide separations and in generating useful by-products from the tailings. Potential valuable products identified include coarse, benign silica sands, bulk iron sulfide products rich in pyrite and/or pyrrhotite, high-grade iron products (magnetite) low in silica, low-volume bulk sulfide concentrates and low-grade molybdenite and talc products. The work presented shows how sulfide tailings can be viewed as a resource rather than a waste stream, and identifies a pathway for developing a more sustainable approach to the environmental management of sulfide tailings for the future.

Equipment wear and corrosion have significant adverse impacts on the operating cost and efficiency of mineral processing plants. In this project advanced surface enhancement technologies are being investigated to decrease the wear and corrosion rate of metal surface. Enhanced metal surfaces are achieved through surface conversion, enrichment, and coating by use of advanced High-Density Infrared (HDI) and other technologies. Studies have been done to determine the effects of process parameters on surface properties and identify optimum conditions. The microstructure of the enhanced metal surfaces was characterized by SEM, EDS, and microindentation. Laboratory wear testing was carried out to investigate the wear performance and the viable coating candidate was determined.

This paper presents the ground settlement monitoring system used during the construction of two tunnels bored by two EPB TBMs, beneath the existing and active railway embankment in Bologna (Italy). The tunnels run close to large buildings and beneath bridges and other infrastructure. Data are collected from remote total stations and from electro levels installed directly on the railway tracks. The automated monitoring system acquires and analyses data then sounds an alarm in the event that there is a problem. Alarms are sent out in case of excessive tilt or settlement. Data is provided through a dedicated web application for multiple-party access, to gather, manage and store monitoring data.

Certain roof shales in coal mines deteriorate upon exposure to the atmosphere, causing difficulties in the mining operations and adding to the cost. This report presents the results of both field investigations, in a West Virginia mine, and laboratory studies on the effects of atmospheric moisture on roof shales. Based on these observations a conceptual procedure is presented on how shale deterioration might be predicted during exploration, and guidelines are given as to how air tempering or conditioning chambers may be designed to reduce moisture effects. Recommendations for further studies are included. An annotated bibliography of the literature constitutes the second volume.

New technology projects, particularly those involving first-of-a-kind metallurgical facilities, have a poor track record of achieving their overall financial targets, as they incorporate technological risks in addition to normal project risks. Traditional project management tools focus on risk from concept development through implementation, but typically fail to address the additional risks associated with a new technology project including slow start-up, slow ramp-up, and failure to achieve design performance (quality or throughput). These additional risks affect future cash flows produced by the project and hence its value, typically measured as net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return (IRR). Common accounting practice is to reduce the present value of future cash flows by applying a chosen discount rate, often reflecting the corporation?s cost of capital. This discount rate does not contain an allowance for technological risk, which is often underestimated or misunderstood by both the financial and engineering project managers. This paper will focus on the topic of project risk and new technology, and how these play a role in the probability of achieving the predicted future cash flows. By properly addressing technological risk in the form of risk-weighted returns, marginal projects can be prevented from proceeding, while sound projects can be given the additional time and resources required to achieve the optimal level of front-end-loading (the level which returns the maximum risk-weighted net present value). A simple set of mathematical tools should enable engineers and financial professionals to establish a common level of understanding, thereby leading to a more accurate assessment whether a new technology project is ready to pass through its next level of approvals.

"Composites consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol), starch and sugarcane bagasse ashes, using glycerol as plasticizer agent, were prepared by solution casting method. Composites prepared were subjected to electron-beam radiation treatments, at radiation dose of 50 and 80 kGy using a Dynamitron electron beam accelerator, at room temperature in the presence of air. The composite samples obtained were evaluated for their water absorption, mechanical and morphological properties.1. IntroductionThe potential of biodegradable polymers and more specifically of biocomposites obtained from agro-resources have long been well established [1-3]. Starch, derivate from variety of botanical sources (cereals, legumes, and tubers) is widely available raw material and one of the most studied and promising agro-resources for the production of biodegradable polymers as matrices for biocomposite applications. However, starch itself is very brittle, hydrophilic and its mechanical properties are very poor for many applications [3 - 5]. The blending of starch with conventional polymers is a promising approach to improve its drawbacks. Recently, many efforts have been made to blend starch with biodegradable synthetic polymers [5, 6]. Polyvinyl alcohol (PYA) is a particularly well-suited synthetic polymer for the formulation of blends with natural polymers, as it is highly polar and can also be manipulated in water solutions, and depending upon its grade, in functional organic solvents as well [3, 7]. PY A has been reported to be an option to blend with starch. Most of the starch/PY A composites have been prepared by casting. However, it is well known that starch/PY A composites has poor in water resistance and mechanical properties after absorbing water [3,8]. Attempts to improve the mechanical properties and to decrease the water absorption property of the starch/PY A composites are made by adding the cross-linkers and plasticizers. Park et al. prepared starch/PY A/citric acid films by the casting method. They also studied the effect of (spell out) citric acid on the mechanical properties and water resistance of composites [9]. Zhai et al. prepared the starch/PY A hydrogels using electron-beam radiation [10]. Different kinds of lignocellulosic fibers have been investigated in blends for formulation of biocomposites."

The war has caused an increasing scarcity of phosphorus and its well known alloys with copper and tin. At the same time, the production of brass and bronze, nickel-silver, cupro-nickel, and other non-ferrous alloys, has considerably increased. The manufacturers of these products had therefore to secure other materials which would serve their purpose; principally that of a deoxidizer, which could be obtained promptly and regularly. Fortunately these materials, pure carbon-free manganese metal and manganese-copper alloy, were not hard to find—in fact, they were never lost. Manganese in various forms has been used in Europe for more than a century; in this country, however, when manganese was first used, and indeed for a long time thereafter, it was consumed mainly in the manufacture of manganese-bronze. Many foundrymen at that time used manganese-copper with the same freedom as phosphor-copper. Although iron enters into the composition of certain grades of bronze, it is very detrimental to non-ferrous mixtures in general; consequently ferromanganese is not applicable, and therefore pure manganese metal, or the alloy of manganese and copper, technically free from iron and other impurities, is now being generally used. The following are the principal elements having an affinity for oxygen: 1, Sodium. 2, Potassium. 3, Calcium. 4, Strontium. 5, Barium. 6, Magnesium. 7, Aluminum, 8, Phosphorus. 9, Silicon. 10, Manganese. 11, Iron. 12, Zinc. 13, Lead. Each metal has its natural flux, or deoxidizer, in the form of a metal or non-metal which will alloy with it, and has a strong affinity for oxygen. For example, phosphorus, as is well known, acts very beneficially in copper alloys that contain tin. Within the last few years, and particularly since the war began, the .great value of mangancse in nickel alloys has been demonstrated, and one by one the manufacturers of these products have adopted its use. While manganese has not so strong an affinity for oxygen as magnesium, aluminum, or silicon, it is nevertheless sufficiently powerful to reduce any oxide of nickel, copper, or zinc that may be present in the nickel alloy to be purified.

"Chromite ore is an indispensable raw material in the manufacture of ferro-chrome and charge-chrome, which are used for the production of stainless and other alloy steels. The demand for chromite ore is ever increasing because of increasing consumption of these steels. Keeping this in view, Tata Steel is keen to recover values from fines and wastes, and also to produce value added products from their captive chromite mines and its processing plants.Tata Steel has its captive chromite resources at Sukinda, Orissa. They contain two ore types, i.e. (i) Ferruginous and (ii) Siliceous. The generation of off-grade ores is an increasing trend and simultaneously customer quality requirements are becoming ever more stringent. The ferruginous type ore also contains a considerable quantity of in-situ fines (~20% particles below 0.5 mm) that compound the beneficiation problem.In many places, in India and abroad, mined non-marketable off-grade and low grade chromite ores are upgraded by using either simple classification techniques like screw classification, hydrosizing, hydrocycloning or conventional gravity concentration processes such as Heavy media separation, Jigging, Spiraling, Tabling etc.At Tata Steel, the ferruginous type ores are treated in Chrome Ore Beneficiation (COB) Plant that comprises: a crushing and grinding circuit; a classification circuit using hydrocyclones; and a beneficiation circuit using 4 stage spirals in the coarse circuit (-0.5+0.1 mm) and 3 stage spirals & tables in the fine circuit (-0.1+0.038 mm). In this process, 3 types of tailings are being generated and together analyses about 17 % Cr2O3, which is high. From the present operation the chromite recovery is around 70% and could not produce coarse concentrates (+0.5 mm size). Whereas the siliceous type ore is treated in the Lumpy Ore Processing (LOP) plant, consisting of crushing-washing & classification-hand sorting operations, to produce marketable grade lumpy ore and –10 mm de-slimed fines. These fines are intermittently treated in the COB plant. The higher silica content (greater than 1%) and low Cr/Fe ratio (less than 2.8) are the problems with these concentrates."

Pumping water for dewatering and water supply is a major component of electricity consumption at mining operations and hence is a significant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. Pump systems at a typical mine site can be broadly split between above ground centrifugal pumps (generally used for water transfer) and submersible borehole pumps (generally for dewatering and/or water supply). In contrast to above ground pumps, submersible borehole pumps can be subjected to varying duty points (total pumping head and flow requirements) as a result of changing bore water levels and yields, particularly in mine dewatering bores. Typically, much higher pumping rates are required at the commencement of dewatering to remove groundwater storage and to intercept sufficient groundwater throughflow to achieve target drawdowns. Once target drawdown levels are reached it often only requires much lower pumping rates to maintain target drawdowns. Pumps sized to remove the large initial volumes of stored groundwater often end up too large for the lower flow rate required for æmaintenance pumpingÆ. This often results in pumps operating inefficiently, a problem which can be made worse when pumps are throttled to reduce the pump output to better match the reduced bore yield. Current standard operating practice places little emphasis on the electricity consumed by pumps, with the focus often being on minimising capital expenditure (æIf it ainÆt broke donÆt fix itÆ). Submersible pumps can have extended service lives of ten to 20+ years. However as the capital cost of a pump typically represents only five per cent of the life cycle cost, the vast majority of the life cycle cost is energy usage.Through the implementation of a regular review of the operation of borehole pumps, significant reductions in electricity use and associated greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved without impacting the dewatering schedule. In most cases, the capital cost of replacing pumps is more than offset by savings in operating costs. These potential savings become even more significant when considering proposed future carbon tax levees.This paper presents examples of the opportunities for significant reductions in energy, greenhouse gas emissions and overall costs that can be achieved for a range of dewatering scenarios.

The brief comments made in this chapter deal mainly with shaft sinking, but don't assume that freezing techniques apply only to shaft sinking. They can be used on tunnel work, on such things as liquid gas storage in sediment, and I think you will probably see other applications for it as we go along. The method was first developed in 1883 and was used to sink shallow shafts through water-bearing overburden in Germany and in England. One of the early shafts was in Germany and was sunk by freezing to 310-ft depth. The project required 17 months for drilling, roughly 5 1/2 months for freezing, and another 7 months for sinking, giving an average progress of 10 ½ fpm. Fortunately there have been numerous improvements and new developments in this technique through the years. With equipment and techniques available today, we can take a 20-ft-diam shaft down through 2000 ft of water-saturated overburden and the time schedule runs roughly 4 months for site preparation, freeze-hole drilling, installing the casings, and setting up the plant; 4 ½ months for freezing; and 6 months for excavating and installing permanent linings. This gives a progress rate of about 140 fpm, on average. I might qualify that a little in that the special linings that are required for some formations can affect the time. If it's straightforward sinking where one can use a heavy concrete lining, up to 630-640 fpm may be achieved in a shaft; but with special cast-iron tubbing or types like that, 5 fpd is pretty good progress, so the lining does affect the time. The freezing method is used mainly for sinking shafts through unstable water-bearing formations which cannot be grouted either effectively or economically and which are too deep to enclose in pile casing. Even with overburden, grouting methods available today can handle roughly 100 lb water pressure; in the range of, say, 100 to 150 ft from the surface, it's very often best to grout 40 or 50 ft. You normally drive a pile casing and go through it. Below that range, freezing is very often the economical

Before you begin mining aggregates in Oklahoma, you must first look at the market and ask these questions: (1) Is there a need for additional aggregate production? (2) Can we produce the aggregate efficiently enough to compete? (3) Is the deposit close enough to the market? If you can answer "yes" to each of these three questions, then you are ready to start the process for mining aggregates in Oklahoma. The first consideration to be made is whether the aggregates produced will need to meet state specifications. If you do not want to meet state durability standards, there are numerous formations you can mine and produce aggregates. We will deal only with the formations that will meet state durability standards. These formations are located in the southern half of Oklahoma and in the Tulsa area. Some of the formations that contain limestone, dolomite, and sandstone that will meet state durability tests are West Springs Creek, Kindblade, McKenzie Hill, Butterly-Royer, and Rush Springs Formations. Granite and rhyolite also are found in Oklahoma and can be used as construction aggregates. Once an area has been identified as having durable material, and drilling has verified its properties, a permit must be secured from the Oklahoma Department of Mines, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, and any other applicable agency before construction of a plant occurs. There are many different brands of crushers available, but all work on one of two crushing principles-either compression breakage or impact breakage. Each type has its application in different industrial-mineral types and the desired end product. A typical small crushing plant would start with a jaw crusher for primary reduction, and then employ one standard cone and one shorthead cone for secondary reduction. One grizzly would be in the circuit with one finished-product screen and three to four finished-product stackers. Natural sands and gravels are found in rivers and old river channels. These too need to be tested to see if spec product can be produced. All of our sand operations have very little gravel; thus, we do not process the gravel. The sand is processed through classifying tanks for gradation.

"As native gold resources are depleted, gold-sulfide ores consisting essentially of pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite become one of the major precious metal sources, being presently estimated to account for more than 40 % of total world gold reserves.The prime objective of flotation of gold-bearing sulfide minerals is to increase precious metal recovery and to reduce the product cost through achieving maximum selectivity of the separation process. Separation of Fe and As sulfides in selective flotation of gold-bearing ore products helps reduce the amount of ore mass being sent to hydrometallurgical processing, and permits of recovering gold from As-free gold-containing pyrite concentrate by using a lower-cost pyrometallurgical procedure.An ingenious methodology purposively developed by the authors for comprehensive assessment of flotation properties, electrophysical characteristics and crystal chemistry features of natural gold-bearing sulfide minerals of different origin has been used in this study.Comparison of the elemental composition, non-stoichiometry and flotation activity of different monomineralic pyrite varieties revealed that samples with negligible impurity content are nearly stoichiometric, and show similar flotation properties. Samples with high Cu, As and Au contents are highly non-stoichiometric and readily floatable, even in a highly alkaline environment. Samples with high surface sulfur content and the most defective crystal lattices, with iron atoms substituting for sulfide vacancies, are most sensitive to depressive action of the alkali.A correlation between the type of conductivity, impurity content and amount of xanthate compounds on the surface and in the liquid phase of monomineralic pyrite and arsenopyrite suspensions detected by the extractive spectrophotometric analysis has been identified and analyzed. Experiments showed that the proportion of cuprous xanthate in sorptive collector layers on sample surfaces increases with increasing Cu content of the samples. In general, pH for pH, overall xanthate sorption on pyrite is greater than on arsenopyrite, with the difference increasing in passing from an acid environment to an alkaline one. A significant decrease in xanthate sorption on arsenopyrite is observed at pH greater than 9, whereas sorption on pyrite markedly decreases at pH greater than 11."

One of our research thrusts at Portland State University (PSU) centers on developing design guidelines for pile foundations in liquefiable, laterally spreading grounds. This research has been primarily sponsored by the DFI Committee Project Fund (CPF) program through four awards, totaling nearly $240,000 in financial support. DFI contributed half of this financial support, while the other half was contributed in-kind by PSU and DFI Project Advisory Board members. Leveraging the CPF funds, we secured an additional $550,000 in financial support from the National Science. Foundation (NSF), which has enabled our research group to continue exploring this topic and contributing to the broader engineering community's understanding of the behavior of pile foundations in liquefiable soils. The CPF funds have fostered collaborations with practitioners and researchers beyond PSU. Notable examples include collaborative research involving data from five large-scale centrifuge tests on pile-supported wharves by Steve Dickenson, Ph.D., New Albion Geotechnical; Nason McCullough, Ph.D., Jacobs Engineering and Scott Schlechter, Geotechnical Resources, as well as 1-g shake table tests of bridge pile shafts conducted by Professors Ahmed Elgamal, Ph.D., and Ahmed Ebeido, Ph.D., of the University of California, San Diego. In addition to these collaborations, our research has benefited from industry-university partnerships formed through the involvement of DFI Project Advisory Board members. Their support and feedback ensure that our research products are practical and imple- mentable in real-world projects. The impact of the CPF funds extends to supporting graduate students' theses, which were the basis for 17 technical publications. Some of these publications are expected to have a significant impact on the industry. For instance, our 2018 DFI Journal paper, co-authored by former master's student Jonathan Nasr, cur- rently with the Army Corps of Engineers, has been cited in the 2022 British Columbia Supplement to Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code S6:19. A noteworthy product of our study is a step-by-step design procedure for pile- supported wharf structures subjected to the combined effects of lateral spreading and inertial loads, outlined in a 2022 American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) Journal of Geotechnical and Geo- environmental Engineering paper co- authored by former doctoral student Milad Souri, Ph.D., PE, Geotechnical Resources.

"As scrap usage increases, it is often necessary to “dilute” the melt with primary aluminum to ensure the finished product meets compositional specifications. Secondary raw materials, particularly postconsumer scraps, often include high levels of unwanted or “tramp” elements, such as iron and silicon in the case of aluminum. Recent literature on this issue cites several causes including inherent contamination during processing as well as ineffective segmentation at end-of-life. To address this accumulation problem, “upgrading” solutions have been developed including: dismantling of end-of-life products, spectrographic or magnetic sorting of shredded scrap, and “filtration” technologies that remove tramp elements in the melt. Although it is clear that upgrading strategies enable increased usage of scrap, it is not clear that they would be economic or efficient. This work presents a set of analytical methods, based on chance constrained optimization, to quantify the potential environmental and economic value of several scrap upgrading technologies.IntroductionAluminum recycling has a number of key environmental and economic benefits. Compared to other materials, aluminum production has one of the largest energy differences between primary and secondary production: 175 MJ/kg for primary compared to 10-20 MJ/kg for secondary[1]. With energy and cost savings in mind, many producers now have targets of increasing their usage of secondary materials[2, 3]. However, the accumulation of impurities in these recycled material streams provides a significant compositional barrier to these goals[4].A growing number of studies and literature would suggest that accumulation of unwanted elements is a growing problem, in all recycled material streams. In the case of aluminum, the list of problematic impurities is quite large, including but not limited to: Si[5, 6], Mg, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cr[7], Fe[5-7], Cu[6, 7], V, and Mn[6]. Metals recycling is a metallurgical process and is therefore governed by the laws of thermodynamics. The removal of unwanted elements in the scrap stream is dictated by the energy considerations of the melt process. Compared to many metals, aluminum has a high degree of difficulty in the removal of tramp elements, due to thermodynamic barriers. Therefore, with no simple thermodynamic solution, producers must identify strategies through-out the production process to mitigate this elemental accumulation."

Introduction Based upon the 1980 Bevill Amendment to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), a 1986 Regulatory Determination decision, and subsequent rulemakings, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) exempted all extraction and beneficiation wastes and twenty mineral processing wastes from regulation under RCRA Subtitle C (hazardous waste) regulations. These twenty mineral processing waste streams were studied in a 1990 Mineral Processing Report to Congress. For purposes of regulatory classification, EPA made special distinctions between extraction/beneficiation and mineral processing. Wastes determined by EPA to be from the extraction/beneficiation of ores and minerals retain the exemption, while wastes found to be mineral processing, except for the “special" twenty mineral processing wastes, fall within RCRA Subtitle C jurisdiction. For those wastes that are subject to RCRA Subtitle C, § 3004(m) of RCRA requires EPA to set levels or methods of treatment, of any, which would substantially diminish the toxicity of the waste or substantially reduce the likelihood of migration of hazardous constituents from the waste so that short- term and long-term threats to human health and the environment are minimized. These treatment standards are developed by EPA under the Land Disposal Restrictions (LDR) program. Under § 3004(g) (4) of RCRA, EPA is required to promulgate treatment standards for any waste that is newly identified or listed as hazardous. As part of the settlement agreement in Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) v. Reilly and Chemical Waste Management, Inc. v. EPA (1992), EPA has agreed to propose a rule by June 30, 1995 and promulgate a final rule by June 30, 1996. This rule is commonly referred to as the "Phase IV" LDR rule and will address newly identified mineral processing wastes. Other wastes that will be addressed in this rule include newly listed dyes and pigments and wood preserving wastes. Therefore, in the Phase IV rule EPA will develop treatment standards for all mineral processing wastes that have lost their Bevill exclusion. EPA is currently collecting information on the waste characterization, treatment alternatives, and disposal capacity data currently available on these wastes. CERTAIN dusts are dangerous when inhaled, but most hazardous of all dusts are quartz or other forms of pure crystalline silica. The inhalation of dusts containing silica in combination with other elements gives rise to changes in the lung which differ from those produced by pure silica. As a generality, silicates are less dangerous than pure crystalline silica and vary greatly among themselves in harmfulness. Repeated analyses have shown that approximately 70 per cent of the total number of particles involved in any dust-producing operation are below 1 to 2 microns in diameter. (A micron is. approximately 1/25,000 in.) Similar studies of dusts recovered from silicotic lungs post mortem have demonstrated essentially the same size frequency distribu-tion, except that the upper limit of size retained in the air sacs is approxi-mately 10 microns. Experiments carried on by Gardner and the author have further demonstrated that greater changes were produced by a fixed weight of very fine quartz particles (2 to 3 microns and smaller) than by the same weight of slightly larger particles (8 to 10 microns). Any attempt to control a dust hazard should therefore be directed toward the removal from the working atmosphere of particles less than 10 microns in size, and particularly those below 3 microns. All industrial hygienists agree on this matter, but there remains considerable dispute as to the lower limit of particle size capable of causing injury. It has been gen-erally conceded, however, that particles of harmful dusts smaller than ¼ to ½ micron are not essentially concerned in the development of pulmonary fibrosis. This opinion is partly substantiated by the existence of large numbers of these small particles in practically all atmospheres that are, not associated with any known hazard. Such particles are so small that they have very little mass, fail to settle even in quiet air, and probably are not easily retained in the lung. Until further research proves that they are involved in the dangers provoked by the inhalation of certain dusts, engineers will generally agree that it is better to dis-regard them.

The advent of larger drilling, excavation, and milling equipment is resulting in a tremendous increase in the scale and annual tonnage of open pit mining. At the present time, open pits up to 3000 ft. deep, and tailings dams and waste dumps up to 600 ft. high are being planned. One of the major problems that projects of this magnitude create is stability. Stability at open pit mining developments must be assessed for tailings dams, waste dumps, and open pit slopes in overburden soil and in rock. Soil mechanics principles are used to assess the stability for the first three. This science was developed by Dr. Karl Terzaghi in the 1920’s, and since that time the theories and principles have been tested and evaluated. This experience has resulted in the development of sound theoretical concepts, workable sampling and testing techniques, and accurate methods of analysis. Typical problems that can be analyzed include: -bearing capacity of soil under dams and waste dumps. - amount of seepage under and through dams. - stability of slopes and determination of safe slope angles for tailings dams, waste dumps, and open pits. - influence of earthquakes on stability. - influence and cost of different excavation and construction techniques. To assist in comparing engineering experience, an international soil classification system has been developed and used for several decades. In addition, many excellent text books are available outlining soil mechanics principles and techniques. A high degree of technology exists in soil mechanics. This, the mining engineer cannot afford to ignore. If soil mechanics principles had been applied, many major failures involving tailings, tailings dams, or waste dumps, such as those at Aberfan, Mufulira, Luanshya, and El Cobre would not have occurred. Tailings dams are planned in Canada that will be up to 600 ft. high. Construction procedures used in the past have paid little attention to the compaction of the shell material or to the influence of earthquakes on stability. This neglect has led to failures. While failures in low dams may not be too serious, for high dams such failures could have catastrophic results. Another major area of concern is the stability of rock slopes. Oil and gas development in southern Pennsylvania during 1937 was marked by considerably increased activity in deep-sand drilling. Nine tests were completed to the Oriskany sand: one in Independence and three in South Beaver townships, Beaver County; one in Franklin township, Butler County, two in Slippery Rock township, Lawrence County; one in Mt. Pleasant township, Washington County, which is drilling below the Oriskany, and one in Fairfield township, Westmoreland County. Two of these wells, both of which were in the Blackhawk pool, South Beaver township, Beaver County, obtained wet gas with open-flow volumes of 1.5 million cu. ft. and 3.1 million cu. ft. and closed-in pressures of 1900 Ib. The remaining seven were unproductive in the Oriskany. Two wells, one in Hampton township, Allegheny County, which is shut down temporarily as a result of a gas pocket, and one in South Beaver township, Beaver County, are drilling to the Oriskany. One deep test on the Chestnut Ridge anticline, South Union township, Fayette County, was completed after considerable difficulty as a dry gas well in the Onondaga limestone. At this locality the cherty limestone is porous as a result of fracturing. Three additional tests are under way in the area, one in South Union township, a second in North Union township, and a third in Wharton township. Completions Oil.—Despite price cuts and production curtailment of Pennsylvania Grade crude, caused largely by a decreasing demand from export markets, operation in the shallow oil areas continued at a fairly high rate and a number of good wells were completed. Some of these were new wells in close proximity to old production and others were old wells drilled into deeper pays. One new well of a number of producers drilled to the Nineveh Thirty-foot sand in the Harvey pool, Center township, Green County, made 400 bbl. of oil and 500 million cu ft. of gas the first 24 hr. The Chambers dam pool of Amwell and South Franklin townships, Washington County, yielded a number of Fifth Sand producers with initials as high as 200 bbl. Several wells in the old Mars-Butler field
