The austenitic and ferritic stainless steels do not undergo any phase transformation that induces very fine grains in the product through thermomechanical processing as practiced in most other steels. Considerable grain refinement can be achieved by intense multistage deformation descending through warm to cold working; notably multi-axial forging of bulk material can attain high strains with diminished risk of cracking. Hot working to improve ductility yields finer grain sizes as the T is reduced and strain rate E raised; increased strain has limited effect due to the steady state regime. Ferritic steels develop subgrains with size diminishing as E rises and T falls with the advantage of retained strain hardening; recrystallization delivers grains several times the cell size. In austenitic steels, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) provides finer grains at higher E and lower T with a lower limit due to intergranular cracking. The DRX grains contain a strengthening substructure that can easily be retained by quenching; if static recrystallization is allowed to occur the grain size rises markedly. Multistage rolling with diminishing T is able to provide grain refinement to the same degree as straining at the finishing T yet provides better ductility. grains on recrystallization. As a result of the strain induced transformation to martensite, small subzero deformations of austenitic or duplex steels produce very high dislocation densities that yield marked grain refinement when they revert upon reheating.

T HE Mining Methods Committee held its initial meeting* on Tuesday afternoon, with F. W. Bradley in the chair and W. Y. Westervelt as vice- chairman. The first paper to be presented was "A Plea for a U. S. Court of Patent Appeals," for which Kenneth W. Greenawalt ably pleaded. The paper (which was published in full in last month's issue) is so carefully prepared that no synopsis can do it justice. It discusses the opposed views of some patent lawyers and other lawyers and members of the judiciary as, for example, Chief Justice Taft who is quoted as saying in 1921: "I think it is a great deal better to take a first class lawyer and a first-class judge and make him a good patent expert than it is to take a patent expert and try to make him a first-class lawyer and a good judge." Mr. Greenawalt argued the need for specialized scientific and engineering interest and understanding to enable a lawyer or judge to prepare or interpret patent specifications and decide the originality necessary for a valid invention. He proposed the special U. S. Court of Patent Appeals to also counteract the costly confusion and injustice now ruling where a patent may be declared valid in the courts of certain States and invalid by the courts of other States.

Casting is the most economical route to transfer raw materials into readily usable components. The economics of casting would be more pronounced and better realized, if there are no or limited necessary post fabrication treatments. Therefore, there is an urge towards near or net-shaped casting as there are significant advantages over conventional casting including reduction of component weight, excellent surface finish, higher strength and integrity of the as-cast parts, closer tolerance, and the ability to produce pore-free parts by controlling the solidification shrinkage. The concept of near or net-shaped casting is currently employed for both semi-finished products such as strip-casting and finished shaped casting, as in case of high pressure die casting or squeeze casting. The full potential of this process yet to be explored and is expected to be realized within the next 10 years, especially in case of strip casting. The current article discusses different near or net-shaped casting routes currently employed for fabrication of high integrity finished products with main emphasis on aluminum-silicon alloys. In this regard, attempts will be made to identify the key parameters during fabrication and highlight the importance of process control and optimization in fabricating premium quality cast products. Hydrogen peroxide production was measured during the grinding of a complex sulfide ore, and its oxidizing effect on solid surfaces was investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) with diffuse reflectance attachment measurement. In turn, an attempt was made to correlate the formation of hydrogen peroxide, surface oxidation and sphalerite flotation. Additionally, in order to predict and minimize detrimental production problems due to the recycling of process water in sulfide ore processing, the effects of major components of calcium and sulfate species present in recycled process water and the effect of temperature on sphalerite flotation were investigated through bench-scale flotation tests using complex sulfide ores. The significance of process water species in flotation was studied using tap water, process water and simulated water containing calcium and sulfate ions. Formation of hydrogen peroxide was revealed during the grinding of the complex sulfide ore, and its formation was counteracted by diethylenetriamine (DETA). The FTIR spectrum of the pulp solid fraction showed varying degrees of oxidized surface species, which are related to the concentration of H2O2 analyzed in pulp liquid. Bench-scale flotation using two different complex sulfide ores showed that sphalerite recovery is better in process water than in tap water. Flotation results also indicated a varied recovery of sphalerite at different temperatures in either tap water or process water.

A method for preparing ferrochromium alloys containing less than 2 pct carbon has been devised in a single vacuum furnace reactor. This method can conserve chromium and should reduce the capital and energy requirements relative to chromite electrothermal reduction. Reduced products containing less than 2 and as low as 0.01 wt pct carbon were obtained by reacting pellets of chromite and carbonaceous reductant mixtures at pressures of 0.1 to 1 ton and temperatures of 1,230° to 1,320° C. The extent of reduction increased with increased temperature and decreased pressure; however, operating conditions were limited due to the onset of significant chromium vaporization at higher temperatures and lower pressures. Foundry coke, anthracite, and carbon black were found to be superior to graphite as reductants. The reduction of chromite to metallics was found to proceed via the carbide intermediates Fe3C or Cr3C2. Lime accelerates the. rate of solid state reduction of chromite and can shorten the furnacin1r time at 1,3000 C under vacuum from 13 hours to less than three hours. Additional lime and silica are added to the hot reduced chromite after releasing the vacuum and raising the furnace. temperature to 1, 700° C. Soaking the charge for about 20 minutes gave a button of low carbon ferrochromium alloy beneath a well-defined slag layer.

The Laronde mill was commissioned in 1988 and has been treating the Laronde Perim ore since 2000. The Laronde plant, situated in the Abitibi region of Quebec, has experienced mill expansions to accommodate 7500 mtpd and to recover gold and silver as well as important amounts of base metals (Cu, Zn, Pb). Ten sequential metallurgical and environmental processes are responsible for metals recovery and process viability. Over 200,000 ounces of gold, 4,5 million ounces of silver, 7000 tonnes of copper, and 78,000 tonnes of zinc are produced annually. In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking high wade (35-45 Wt Au) pyrite sulphide concentrate (TCGO) for gold extraction at a newly constructed treatment plant, increasing gold output at Laronde by 40,000 ounces. In 2009, the high gold wade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the Laronde plant increasing output by 120,000 ounces of gold. TCGO and Lapa productions are forecasted until 2018 and 2015 respectively, with known reserves of each mine. Today, up to 140 permanent employees run and optimise the Laronde plant operation. As a result, Laronde has intricacies intrinsic to a large and varied operation. The paper will outline the metallurgical highlights, challenges, and future outlook related to the treatment of each ore type (Laronde, TCGO, and Lapa)

The Sole Mia development is located in an area of North Miami, Florida currently undergoing revitalization that started in 2015. The overall site sits atop 184 acres of a former municipal waste landfill that was closed about 43 years ago. Langan, as the geotechnical engineer of record, has been involved in the design and development of the roadways, an 8-acre “Crystal” Lagoon, two 18-story residential towers, two large mixed-used 6-story complexes and a 7-story hospital with associated parking garage. Currently, Langan is engaged in high-rise development parcels (30+ stories), that are beginning construction. The landfill material is typically about 20 to 25 ft thick and it needs to remain in place during development. Long-term instrumented pilot test programs were created and implemented by Langan to evaluate the effectiveness of deep dynamic compaction (DDC) and preloading in order to minimize/effectively eliminate the short and long-term settlement impacts of landfill on the proposed development. Ground improvement has included DDC and/or preloading for support of roadways, parking lots, major underground utilities and light ground features. Medium to high capacity augered cast-in-place (ACIP) pile foundation systems have been evaluated, tested and ultimately used for support of the buildings/towers, including ground floor slabs. Pile installation through landfill and negative skin friction on the piles had to be considered in design.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of complex gas mixtures, such as would be produced by coal gasification, for reducing iron oxide pellets. A semiempirical model was developed to predict a priori the reduction rate of an iron oxide pellet in a laboratory tube furnace with simulated coal gases at a total pressure of 1 atm. The model uses partial pressures of H2, CO, CO2, CH4 (methane), water vapor, and a temperature-dependent term to predict the rate of reaction. The reduction rate (weight loss per unit of time) was determined with a thermo-gravimetric apparatus (TGA) in the temperature range of 800° to 1,100° C. The ranking of the reductants, in order of decreasing reducing potential, is H2, CO, and CH4 at temperatures between 800° and 1,000° C; however, CH4 became a better reductant than CO at 1,100° C. Water vapor did not decrease the reduction rate as much as did CO2, Carbon deposition was observed at temperatures below 1,000° C with gas mixtures with high CO and low H2 concentrations. With low-Btu gas at 900° C, over 90 pct of the iron oxide was reduced to iron in less than 3 h. This com-pares with a reduction time of 1.5 h with medium-Btu gas and 1 h with reformed natural gases.

Bushveld Belco is commissioning a plant for production of electrolyte used in vanadium redox flow batteries. Owing to the source material, the electrolyte is contaminated with Fe, at concentrations up to 140 mg/L, which negatively affects battery performance. This study examined the use of ion exchange to reduce the Fe concentration to the target value of < 100 mg/L from a feed solution containing 100 g/L V in 4 M H2SO4. Four resins with possible application were identified: Puromet MTS9570, Puromet MTX7010, Puromet MTS9500, and Puromet MTC1600H. Puromet MTS9570 outperformed the other three resins in all batch experiments with respect to loading capacity and selectivity over V, and was evaluated for Fe removal in fixed-bed column loading tests. Based on these data, preliminary sizing and design of a full-scale column was undertaken. Owing to the difficulty of eluting this resin, a philosophy of discarding the resin on loading to full capacity was considered. These data revealed that, despite the high selectivity of this resin for Fe over V, it would be too expensive and impractical to use this resin for full-scale operation under such conditions. It is recommended to remove iron earlier in the flowsheet prior to generation of the 4 M H2SO4 electrolyte.

As a portion of a general program for the synthesis of hard materials, a method was sought by which the hardness and density of tungsten carbide (WC)-cobalt compacts could be increased. It was demonstrated by Cotter that these improvements in quality could be made by employing an electric-resistance sintering process in which heat and pressure are applied simultaneously to presintered compacts composed of powdered tungsten carbide and cobalt. This conclusion was based on tests of material prepared by Cotter on welding equipment in use at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., and at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N. Y. Rockwell-hardness tests made at Norris and core-drilling tests made at the Mount Weather Station of the Bureau of Mines indicated that, for some purposes, carbide material made by this process might be superior to the chemically analogous commercial products prepared by ordinary sintering methods. A program to develop optimum conditions for the electric-resistance sintering of tungsten carbide-cobalt compacts was initiated. The program was followed by a systematic evaluation of the hardness and density of compacts prepared by this method along with a series of carbide compacts furnished by various manufacturers. This paper presents a description of the electric-resistance sintering of tungsten carbide-cobalt compacts and the results of comparative physical tests.

Performance of mineral filler particles in ceramic applications can be enhanced markedly by adsorbing polymers of optimum molecular structure and dosage. In a recent work by Chen and Somasundaran (1997), a novel scheme of controlled polymer adsorption was used to produce nanocomposites of unique core-shell designs. Towards this purpose, adsorption and desorption behavior of selected polyacrylic acids (PAA) on three minerals; alumina, titania, and silicon carbide, was examined as a function of relevant parameters. Adsorption of P AA was found to depend on polymer molecular weight, pH, as well as solids loading. Specifically, the adsorption density was found to increase with increase in polymer molecular weight for non-porous alumina while it was found to decrease in the case of porous alumina. This is attributed to the inaccessibility of the pores to the larger polymers. An unexpected finding was the change in the adsorption density of PAA with solids loadings. PAA adsorbs on silicon carbide only at low pH values when the particles have very low surface charge suggesting that the adsorption in this case is controlled by electrostatic forces. Using polyacrylic acid as bridging agent between the alumina fillers (core) and nanosize alumina or titania particles (shells), controlled layer by layer deposition of nanoparticle on the core particle surface could be obtained.

Coal loss is an important issue at many coalmines, with losses of five per cent being common. The type of loss varies from mine to mine but is dependent on mine strata, the drilling and blasting processes applied and the mining method used. Typical coal loss mechanisms from the drill and blast process are coal roof damage and edge loss. Usually a reduction in coal loss is in direct competition with the need to provide material that is well-fragmented and a muck pile that has the required cast percentage. These competing issues were addressed over a two-year period at a mine in the New South Wales Coalfields by implementing a five-step approach. This was centred around building an understanding of the coal loss mechanisms utilising proprietary heave- modelling software, measuring coal losses by comparing survey to drill and/or gamma logs and implementing appropriate coal loss reduction processes. The end result exceeded expectations with a 95 per cent reduction in coal loss. Mine excavation productivity was maintained and coal loss minimised to less than one per cent of the in situ coal block.CITATION:Nagarajan, M, Green, A, Brown, P and Dare-Bryan, P, 2015. THE cinnabar deposits of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company&apos;s Pinchi Lake property, situated near Fort St. James, B.C., were discovered and reported on by a Dominion Government geological party in 1937. Claims were staked by a group of local prospectors and, later, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, took an option on the property. By the fall of 1939, exploration work had indicated ore of commercial quantity and grade, and laboratory tests had shown that standard methods of reduction, namely, roasting of the ore, followed by condensation of the mercury vapour produced, would result in satisfactory recovery. In June, 1940, construction of a 50-ton unit arranged for wood firing was completed and operation commenced. The installation consisted of a 46 in. by 60 ft. rotary kiln (see Figure 1) followed by a 14-in. Sirocco cyclone, a cast-iron condenser unit, and a 1,700 c.f.m. fan, exhausting to a stack. Other equipment included a 9 in. by 18 in. Denver jaw crusher with the necessary bins and feeders. As the need for mercury was urgent, because of war requirements, construction of a duplicate unit was begun almost immediately. This first extension started operation in January, 1941, and the plant was then capable of treating about 150 tons of ore daily.

Ammonium nitrate, sensitized by the addition of a small percentage of No. (class) 2 diesel fuel or other suitable petroleum product, has been adopted as a low-cost, efficient blasting agent2 in a wide variety of mining, quarrying, and heavy construction operations. Moreover, the ready availability of the component supplies throughout the Nation, together with the ease of formulating them into effective blasting agents, has made it possible for the blaster himself to prepare the mixes at the site of use. Recently, most established explosives manufacturers have begun supplying premixed AN-FO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil) or a comparable product to various mining operations. However, many individuals and small business establishments are marketing premixed products prepared in facilities that are often poorly constructed and poorly located. Although these blasting agents have partly or wholly displaced explosives such as dynamites in many applications, there are some blasting operations in which the fuel-sensitized ammonium nitrate agents do not appear to be well adapted. As long as the hazards they present are clearly understood and respected, ammonium nitrate-based blasting agents have important safety characteristics when prepared under competent factory control or field-mixed under equivalent close control. This publication attempts to summarize the knowledge of those hazards and to incorporate practical ways to cope with them.

The 2006 Sago, Darby, and Aracoma mine disasters in the United States (US) forced the US government to implement the 2006 MINER Act and additional regulations that require all US underground coal mines to install and maintain refuge chambers to manage entrapment emergencies, in particular, fires and explosions. However, there is a debate on whether barricading in refuge chambers is a good strategy to survive such emergencies. Australian coal mines are not required to use refuge chambers and, instead, have adopted a strategy that focuses on instructing and training miners to self-escape to the surface. This paper analyzes merits and problems of using refuge chambers and self-escape to the surface to manage emergencies in fires or explosions in an underground coal mine. The authors found that the use of refuge chambers may not be the best strategy during extensive fires or when multiple explosions happen. In these situations, mine rescuers are unlikely able to extract miners who are sheltered in chambers and conversely, self-escape may save more lives than sheltering. Chances for successful self-escape are further improved by regular, externally assessed training such as Level 1 Emergency Exercises required in the Australian State of Queensland. These exercises put pressure on mine operators to ensure and maintain the effectiveness of their emergency management system.

Falls of ground (FOG) still account for around 35 per cent of all fatalities in underground southern African mines. To help reduce FOG, appropriate support technology needs to be implemented, and a mindset and cultural change are required to make a significant change. Discipline plays a major role and needs attention, whilst appropriate first-world support technology is available to assist in the reduction of injuries and the improvement of productivity. Section 54 mine stoppages due to FOG are costly. Appropriate support should reduce these unnecessary stoppages. Coal mining has adapted leading support technologies over the years. Platinum and chrome mines have shown significant moves towards adopting leading and appropriate support technologies, seeing noteworthy changes in injury statistics for the better. In typical conventional underground mining operations, the use of temporary support components offers some protection to workers while the permanent and generally more elaborate support systems are installed or constructed. Nonetheless, FOG continue and still result in injuries to people. The author wishes to explore the options and practicality of making use of new-generation support products and technology to provide not only safer support operations, but to also enhance productivity at the working faces. This paper will examine the use of appropriate support technology as a means to making the working stope or development end a safer and more productive workplace.

Magnesia (MgO) has a variety of uses, and it has become increasingly important as a war material because of the imperative demand for refractories to line metallurgical furnaces, and because magnesia is used to make the in aircraft and other implements of warfare. Magnesia occurs as an integral part of nearly 60 minerals, but it is extracted commercially from only a .smaller number, of them. The present commercial sources are magnesite, brucite, dolomite, raw sea water, sea water bitterns, and well brines. Magnesia Raw Materials Magnesite magnesium, carbonate MgCO3, theoretically contains 47.8 percent MgO and 52.2 percent CO2. There are two varieties of magnesite, crystalline and cryptocrystalline (dense or amorphous). The latter type, though, not so plentiful as the former, is generally purer. It resembles unglazed write pottery in texture, whereas the crystalline variety is generally dark and granular, though the color may vary. The principal domestic deposits, of crystalline magnesite are near Chewelah, Stevens County, Wash. (which has supplied most of the magnesite mined in the United States), in the Gabbs Valley area of Nevada (near Luning); and in Llano County, Tex. Crypto-crystalline magnesite occurs principally in California. Magnesite occurrences have also been reported in several other States, including New Mexico, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maryland, but these deposits have not been developed commercially.

It is possible to have traceability in the mining industry, by parameters and signatures like particle mineralogy, mineral association, texture and mineral liberation. The study is on an apatite-iron ore deposit at Malmberget, Sweden, and characterizes an ore body both mineralogically and texturally in a quantitative manner by using analytical methods like optical microscopy, microprobe (EMPA) and an automatic SEM based system, Particle Texture Analysis (PTA). The mineralogy was evaluated by PTA and characterized by modal mineralogy, mineral liberation and mineral associations. Magnetite has a simple outline and straight grain boundaries and the gangue minerals have a finer particle size with a more complicated texture. The PTA analysis also shows that apatite is associated to magnetite as mixed particles, while smaller grains of magnetite are inclusions in feldspar. Result from particle texture analysis shows that there is a connection which link to the mine-to-mill context, and it may be used to create traceability. This link is not the associations of the main ore mineral magnetite, nor the modal mineralogy. Instead, it is the mineral associations of contaminating minerals (apatite and feldspar) that appear to be most promising since they survive from mine to mill. The modal mineralogy may be used to understand how contaminated minerals break into or out of particles size fraction during grinding.

As part of its efforts to devise new and improved methods for recovering lithium from unconventional resources , the Bureau of Mines investigated a lime -gypsum- roast , water- leach technique for processing lithiumenriched ( 0.01-0.68 pct Li ) clays . This report presents the results of a study of the technical feasibility of extracting lithium from raw material representative of clay beds associated with the McDermitt Caldera complex in Nevada and Oregon . prepared from water used Pellets suitable for bench-scale roasting studies were mixtures of minus 200 -mesh clay , limestone , and gypsum , with as the pelletizing agent . Roasting pelletized charges at 900 ° to 1,000° C temperatures for 1- to 4-h periods produced calcines that leached readily , yielding water - soluble lithium sulfate ( Li₂SO4 ) . A 5-3-3 ( weight ratio ) mix of clay , limestone , and gypsum produced calcines with the best leaching characteristics . More than 91 pct of the contained lithium was extracted from pelletized mix batches roasted in covered refractory boats . Lithium recovery decreased to about 87 pct when the mix was roasted under dynamic conditions in a gas - fired rotary furnace . A reaction mechanism was postulated which indicated that dilution and loss of SO2 and oxygen in the combustion exhaust adversely affected the leachability of the dynamically roasted calcine .
