Three species of chemosynthetic iron- and sulfur-oxidizing autotrophic bacteria have been isolated from the leaching waters of copper mining areas. These species are: The sulfur-oxidizing Thiobacillus concretivorus, the iron-oxidizing Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, and a sulfur- and iron-oxidizing bacterium closely resembling Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, INTRODUCTION Among several suggested new processes for treating marginal ores in the United States, none is more intriguing than the possibility of extracting metals from low-grade materials by the action of microorganisms One phase of a Federal Bureau of Mines investigation toward developing such a procedure was to isolate and identify specific chemosynthetic iron and sulfur. oxidizing autotrophic bacteria native to certain domestic copper deposits where leaching is practiced. The bacteria or microorganisms considered important to this investigation are those capable of producing solutions of ferric sulfate and sulfuric acid. Solutions of this type are excellent solvents for some copper minerals By establishing the presence of these bacteria at certain copper-leaching areas, strength would be given to a theory that microbial activity is partly responsible for the oxidation that takes place at these areas. Their presence also advances possibilities for controlled use of microbial action in metal extraction processes. Leathen4/ has demonstrated that one of the chemosynthetic iron-oxidizing bacteria, Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, can oxidize 200 parts per million of ferrous iron to the ferric state in 3 days,

Horizontal drilling in coal mines is a relatively new technology. The earliest recorded drilling in the United States was done in 1952 at the Humphrey Mine of Consolidation Coal Company for degasification of coal seams. Spindler and Poundstone experimented with vertical and horizontal holes for eight years. They concluded in 1960 that horizontal drilling in advance of underground mining appeared to offer the most promising prospect (for degasification) but effective and extensive application would be dependent upon the ability to drill long holes, possibly 300-to 600 m, with reasonably precise directional control and within practical cost limits.(1) Mining Research Division of Continental Oil Company, the parent company of Consolidation Coal Company, began a research program in the early 1970's to achieve the above objective. The technology needed to drill nearly 300 m in advance of working faces was developed by 1975 and experiments on advance degasification with such deep holes began in 1976. Preliminary Its of this research have already been published.(2) To date nearly 4500 m of horizontal holes have been drilled for advance degasification and earlier results were reconfirmed. In summary, these are: 1) The greatest impact of these boreholes was felt in the face area where methane concentrations were reduced to nearly 0.3 percent in course of two to three months from original values of nearly 0.95 percent.

In the period of time allotted to this paper, an attempt will be made to cover a great deal of territory, figuratively speaking, as far as our experience with ammonium nitrate is concerned. In giving this subject the "broad-brush" treatment, it will be necessary to generalize on the major points which at the same time will permit me to avoid, to a great extent, any involvement in the purely technical and theoretical aspects of blasting. The practice of theorizing before a new idea is tried has practically been discontinued in our organization simply because experience has shown that, almost without exception, theories have fallen aside as some new development takes its place. In regard to blasting, logic and experience seem to have little place in this phase of quarry operations. As the use of low cost blasting agents was introduced in our operating practice, a man who had no previous experience in the field of blasting but with sound knowledge in safety procedures was given the responsibility of supervising the drilling and blasting operations. A total lack of experience is not ordinarily recommended as a prerequisite to assuming the responsibilities of a supervisory position. However, in this case it was obviously a wise decision because there were no pre-conceived ideas as to what techniques would or would not be successful.

During the past 20 years, FKC-Lake Shore, located in southern Indiana, has been working with Contitech, the German conveyor company, to push vertical conveyor technology to new depths and open up additional opportunities for underground mine owners. Historically, the underground mining industry has largely been unable to realize the benefits of these efficient systems due to the design limitations in maximum depth and capacity. Until recently, only relatively shallow depth mines with low production rates have been a ?t for a vertical conveyor system. This, however, is changing with technical advancements in the Pocketlift system. With each milestone, a new vertical conveyor record is set for depth and capacity. For instance, in 2002, FKC-Lake Shore set one such record with the installation of a Pocketlift system at a mine in the Illinois coal basin with a lift height of 273 m (896 ft) and a production rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). Although it was unthinkable at that time, today?s vertical conveyors are capable of reaching lift heights up to 700 m (2,300 ft) with an average production rate of 450 t/h (500 stph). These new lift heights and production rates are opening the technology to more potential mine owners and shifting the way people look at moving material in the future.

Coalmines, like any other mine, generally involve the classic three-staged approach to mining studies; namely concept, pre-feasibility study (PFS) and feasibility studies (Cusworth, 2012). Subsequent to these studies, and in instances parallel to these studies, the commitment to an environmental impact statement (EIS) is made in order to secure both state and federal development consent. In recent times, the sentiment to both mining and coal is changing whereby the traditional approaches to mine planning and economic evaluation is complicated by evolving environmental legislation, expectations and time frames. It is all too common to take shortcuts in the development of projects in order to create the perception of cost savings and expediting the delivery timeline. Atkins (2016) points out that: boards of so many small to mid-tier mining companies, and a few majors, focus on relentless project delivery too early in the project process, with so little time and effort applied to risk analysis and option development. Unforeseen risks can cost any timeline or budget far more than the effort required assessing and mitigating these. The ultimate risk to any feasible coal project is that of environmental approval and achieving development consent.CITATION:Stambolie, T W C, 2016. Diesel locomotives for underground haulage have been used in coal mines in Continental Europe for twenty-five years or more. In Great Britain, it was not until 1935 that permission was granted to use them in gassy coal mines, but since that time they have been employed in increasing numbers both in gassy and non-gassy coal mines and in metal mines. Their use underground in coal mines in the United States is still prohibited and the same was the case in Canada until 1946, when permission was granted to operate a Diesel underground in the Adanac mine of West Canadian Collieries, Limited, at Bellevue, Alberta. The locomotive used here is a 50 h.p. Hunslet Mark II. More recently, a 100 h.p. Diesel was placed in operation for underground haulage at No. 18 Colliery of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, in the Sydney coalfield, N. S. Thus, on this continent, Canada has been a pioneer in the use of these locomotives underground in coal mines and there is no doubt that more and more of them will be employed as time goes on. We feel, therefore, that the following notes concerning their design and performance, which we have received from the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, will be of interest to our members.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of chlorinated chemicals that were used in many different fire resistant hydraulic fluids, heat transfer fluids, and in electrical equipment as dielectric liquids. PCBs were manufactured primarily by Monsanto Chemical Company under the tradename Aroclor, and were used by many different electrical equipment manufacturers. PCBs are noted chiefly for their extreme chemical inertness. This resulted in exceptional fire resistance and long life in applications involving exposure to high temperatures and intense electrical fields. This combination of properties resulted in PCBs being widely used in electrical equipment used in mines, including transformers, capacitors, and some electric motors. PCBs were also used as working fluids in some heat transfer and hydraulic sys terns. The same chemical resistance that gave PCBs long life in industrial applications give PCBs essantially eternal life when they are released into the environment. PCBs are not highly toxic in the sense that exposure does not cause immediate health problems. However, PCBs accumulate in the human body and neither degrade nor are eliminated from the body, and long-term exposure to PCBs can result in changes in liver function which may increase susceptibility to the carcinogenic effects of other chemicals. PCBs also accumulate in the food chain; the concentration of PCBs in fresh water fish may be several hundred thousand times as high as in the water the fish are taken from.

On Dec. 20, 2013, an 8-m (26.2-ft) diameter Robbins hybrid single shield/earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (EPB TBM) was launched to bore the Grosvenor decline tunnel for Australia?s Anglo American coal mine. The machine was built using onsite first time assembly (OFTA) in order to fit within a tight project schedule. Assembly at the remote jobsite near Moranbah, Australia took about four-and-a-half months, and then the machine was walked down into a launch tunnel. Two decline tunnels, at grades of 1:6 and 1:8, will be used for mine access to new coal seams. The hybrid machine is tackling mixed ground conditions ranging from sand and clay to varying types of sedimentary hard rock up to 120 MPa UCS, as well as coal seams. Methane gas is expected to be present throughout the tunnel, so the machine has been designed as explosion-proof-compliant to ERZ-1. ?Grosvenor is the first underground coal mine in Queensland to use a TBM for drift construction,? said Glenn Tonkin, Grosvenor project director. ?We are proud to be pioneering this technology.? Only about 300 m (984 ft) of ground in each decline tunnel is expected to require EPB mode, while the rest of the tunnel will be bored in hard rock mode. Thus, the design was optimized toward hard rock excavation.

[A new record in fuel efficiency at petroleum refineries was established in 1939, when a the average B.t.u. requirements per barrel of crude oil processed declined to a new low of 557,000 B.t.u. (see fig. 1). The average fuel requirement per barrel of crude oil refined has remained virtually stationary for the past 3 years. Thus in 1937 the average was 562,000 B.t.u., in is it rose to 567,000 B.t.u., and in 1939 it declined to 557,000 B.t.u. she largest gains in fuel economy cane a decade or so ago on the widespread introduction of heat exchanges and pipe stills. In recent years many successful innovations in heat saving have been adopted, but the combined effect of those is completely masked by the degree to which the capacity is utilized. Some heat requirements are relatively inelastic, so the average consumption per barrel of crude oil refined tends s to increase when the operating ratio (crude runs divided by capacity) declines and vice versa. In 1939 crude runs to stills increased 6 percent (from 1,165,015,000 barrels in 1938 to 1,237,840,000 in 1939) compared with a decline of about 2 percent in 1938. The operating ratio in 1939 was 82 percent compared it's 78 percent in 1938.]

The Mining Division of Utah Power and Light Company is located in the coal fields of southeastern Utah -main office in Huntington, Utah. The Division will produce 6.5 million tons of low sulfur steam coal in 1988, making UP&L the largest underground mining operation west of the Mississippi. Coal is mined from three underground mines utilizing continuous miner and longwall mining methods. All coal produced by the Mining Division is utilized at UP&L's two largest steam-electric power plants, the Hunter and Huntington plants with a combined capability of 1,995,000 Kw. At UP&L we believe that to achieve success a company must have clearly defined goals which are understood, communicated and shared at each level of operation. We have also found from experience that a safe operation is generally an efficient and productive operation. As a Division, we have established a goal to achieve the safest, most efficient operation in the country. This is an ambitious goal. To achieve such a goal requires real commitment and a safety/training program capable of achieving needed results. The following is an overview of the program we have established at UP&L which has enabled us to reduce our accident frequency rate from over 40 in 1980 to 8.00 at present, as illustrated in Figure 1.

"Schottky type solar cells based on phthalocyanine (Pc) thin films were fabricated, and their photovoltaic performance was investigated in various ambient atmospheres. Most of cells prepared in this study showed a good rectification and photovoltaic effects in the visible wavelength region. The introduction ofN02 gas into the measuring chamber was confirmed to increase the current both in dark and under light illumination. However, chemical reaction between the Al electrode and N02 formed some oxide and deteriorated the Schottky barrier, resulting in an increase in cell resistivity. SF 6 gas also showed similar effects on the cell performance.IntroductionPhthalocyanine is one of the typical organic semiconductors, which shows high photoconductive sensitivity in the visible to infrared region. Today, several kinds of metal phthalocyanines are used in electrophotographic photoreceptors. In addition, application of phthalocyanines to solar cells have also been trying by many workers [1, 2]. Many efforts have been made for improving performance of phthalocyanine solar cells by modification of device structure [3, 4], doping by dye or pigment [5, 6] and incorporation of metal clusters [7]. It is known that electrical conductivity in phthalocyanine is increased by adsorption ofNO2 [8, 9]. We tried to improve photovoltaic performance ofphthalocyanine solar cell by adsorption ofNO2. This paper describes the influence of N02 adsorption on the photovoltaic behavior of phthalocyanine solar cells."

The Bureau of Mines has investigated fumes generated by selected welding electrodes used in mines in order to help determine their relative health hazard potential. Fumes were generated and collected in an enclosed chamber for subsequent generation rate and chemical constituent determination. Shielded metal arc electrodes from the following groups were tested: AWS types E308-16 and E310-16 stainless steel, ECoCr-A Co-Cr hardfacing alloy, ENiCr Ni, an Mn-Cr buildup alloy, E7018 carbon steel, and EII018-M low-alloy steel. Flux-cored wire electrodes of this last group also were tested. Fume generation rates and the chemical composition of the fumes were measured. From these data, exposure in-dices were determined, which give a relative measure of the health hazard potential of using the electrodes. The effect of welding onto build-up alloy layers on the fume composition also was examined for five of the higher alloy groups.

AS the Petroleum Division rounds off the first quarter century since its evolution from technical committee status, there steps to the long line of notable men who have presided over its activities a young man, currently of Tulsa, one Herbert F. Beardmore by name. For one year, as Chairman for 1946, the Division will be his oyster. hi; baby, his responsibility. "Herb" Beardmore was born at Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 6, 1904, and lived there until he was thirteen. Then his family moved to Oklahoma City, and later sent him to the University of Oklahoma, where he graduated in 1925 with a B.S. in engineering geology. His final year in college was the first year in which a petroleum engineering course was taught at the school. Since his course of study so closely paralleled that of a petroleum engineer, he has frequently been spoken of as the first petroleum engineering graduate from the University of Oklahoma. Out of college he went to work as an oil-field roustabout in the Ranger, Texas, field for Jake L. Hamon. This work consisted of all manual labor phases of cable-tool operation and beam-pumping of oil wells. He moved in 1926 to Bartlesville, to become a gas engineer for the Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Co., where he was employed in gas-well drilling, gas production, and transportation, mostly in Osage County, Oklahoma.

In-situ recovery (ISR) is accepted and applied across many geographies, and approximately 50% of the world’s uranium is currently extracted by using an ISR method (World Nuclear Association, 2014). The low environmental impact, the elimination of risk for mine workers and the fact that all of the lowest-cost producers of uranium use an ISR approach should raise interest from traditional miners (IAEA, 2014). However, the broader application of ISR to other commodities and mineral systems remains limited. A number of demonstration (experimental) copper projects have been undertaken (Sinclair and Thompson, 2015) with a few copper projects in Arizona being close to demonstration (Florence, 2018 and Gunnison, 2018). Evidence of very few economically operating ISR copper projects can be found (for example, the Russian, Uralgidromed OAO, built by the Russian Copper Company in 2005 and operated as an ISR facility from the Gumeshevskoye deposit (Russia Mining, 2018). A number of gold deposits, particularly paleochannel deposits, have also been considered for ISR, but, to the best of our knowledge, only limited demonstration and no commercial operations have been established, yet (Kuhar et al, 2018 and references therein).CITATION:Robinson, D J and Kuhar, L L, 2018. SOMETIMES family backgrounds have a deep, if not direct, influence on a man's lifework. Dean Callen's paternal grandfather came from Wales and was a mine official in the Pennsylvania anthracite field: his maternal grandfather was a retail coal dealer. His father and uncle began their careers a. breaker boys but later completed their educational work and ended up in the professions. With that background, and with the slate region ( Pen Argyl, Pa.. July 1;. 1888) as his birthplace it is not strange that "Cope" Callen became a teacher of mining engineering. Graduating from Lehigh with an E.M. in 1909, lie taught there for two years while working for his master's degree. In 1911 he returned to teaching, going to the University of Illinois as instructor in mining engineering. In 1917, he was called to West Virginia University as head of the department of mining engineering and director of mining extension. The extension work was about dead. bus a new staff was built and the six-weeks' short course in coal mining was revamped into an attractive and efficient course which has grown in popularity with the years. Callen's work attracted the attention of the Federal Board for Vocational Education and in 1919 he was invited to serve that board as special agent for mining, taking a six-months' leave front the University.

"There seems to be some confusion between the terms carbon black and lamp black, although in American lampblack is generally understood to be a soot formed by the smudge process. In this process oil, coal tar, resin or some solid, or carbonaceous substance is burned in an insufficient quantity of air, while on the other hand carbon black is a product resulting from the incomplete combustion of gas and is deposited by actual contact of flame upon a metallic surface.The various carbons, such as gas retort coke, oil retort coke, graphite, carbon black, lampblack, vine black, wood-pulp,black, willow charcoal, and blacks made from refuse material such as leather have different characteristics as to flocculence strength of color, and physical structure. These blacks are made by one of the following methods:(1) Formation by direct contact of a flame upon a depositing surface.(2) Production by combustion of an oil, tar, etc., in an inadequate supply of air; the soot is allowed to slowly settle out on the floors and the walls of the collecting chambers.(3) Carbonization of solids and subsequent reduction to a state of small subdivision.(4) Production by heating carbonaceous vapors or gases to a decomposition temperature by external heating with or without air in the forming chamber. This is usually referred to as cracking or thermal decomposition."

It was estimated in Chemical Week1 that the uranium fuel requirements for the U.S. Electric Utility Industry by the mid 1980's would be about four times that-of what it is today. This corresponds to approximately 45,000 tons per year of 'yellow cake' - of which a good portion is represented by ammonium diuranate - vs. the 11,700 ton total estimated for 1975. Perhaps just as significant is the 40-fold increase in thirty years projected for the entire world since 1970. Thus by the year 2000. 'yellow cake' production could be in the order of [3]50.000 short tons annually.2 'Yellow cake', so named because of its inherently bright yellow color, is a finely divided precipitate that can be formed after the leaching step when refining uranium ores. Feed solids enhancement then occurs to at least 50% by weight using filters or centrifuges This is followed normally by drying and then calcining with the conversion of ammonium diuranate to triuranium octoxide represented by the following equation: [9 (NH4)2 U2 07 heat 14 NH3 7 + 15 H2O7 + 2N2/ + 6 U308 4] Theoretically, assuming 100% conversion every 100 kgs. or 100 lbs. of ammonium diuranate will result in 90 kgs. or 90 lbs. of triuranium octoxide.
