The velocity with which the burden moves after blasting is of concern for safety and economic reasons. Models developed for motion velocity by various researchers were reviewed and likely model parameters were used to develop statistically significant models. Regression analysis and residual analysis were used to determine the model coefficients and the accuracy of the models.

A constitutive model for the simulation of fracture and fragmentation processes in rapidly loaded rocks is studied. The model was included in a wave propagation finite element code. The results obtained from two different configurations of explosive charge and reflecting surfaces in a plane strain problem were studied. The evolution of the time-dependent fracture pattern is presented.

This paper investigated the airflow pattern in the working face area during a cross-cut development. The study used a 10:l scale face model and a mock continuous miner. Results showed that keeping up the line curtain is essential in order to avoid recirculation and to control respirable dust and methane, in the face area.

To realize a radiowave communication along mine galleries a few kilometers long without repeater, we show that it is possible to use a coaxial cable bearing an important surface transfer impedance like a transmission line with an inductive coupling to the transmitter and the receiver. Surface subsidence resulting from underground coal mining can cause problems for buried pipelines. In this paper, a technique for assessing the level of stress on a subsidence-affected pipeline is introduced. The main contributors to the stress are identified, and mitigation techniques for reducing the stress are proposed. The proposed mitigation techniques were then successfully tested.

Traditional mine planning concepts are discussed and suggestions for improvement through use of the developed model are proposed. The approach developed in this paper allows optimal planning of the complete mining-concentrating-refining system over the entire planning horizon and permits the system to dictate how and when to process a block of material, i. e., a dynamic cutoff.

The flocculation of hydrophobic magnetite with gold was examined as a possible means of recovering fine (95 per cent were possible for 1.5 - 3.0 ¦m and 5.5 - 7.5 pm gold sizes.
