This paper is a survey of the various methods and research efforts by which the drivability of piles is determined. First, a brief outline of the basic theory and the important parameters for driving by vibration are presented. Then, a wide variety of methods by which the drivability of piles is determined are presented and discussed, with special emphasis on methods developed in the USSR. Each of these methods are examined as to how they take into account the various parameters of vibratory pile driving, such as eccentric moment, frequency, dynamic force, motor torque and power, vibrating and static weight, and other variables. Some relation of these methods of field data is presented as well.

Development of a permanent human base on the Moon for exploration requires a self sustaining system. This entails production and processing of limited amounts of raw material on the Moon. Any mining and construction activities on the Moon can only be performed by a robust excavation machine that can excavate a variety of material from loose surface regolith to consolidated (frozen) regolith with embedded rocks in the mixture. Meanwhile, limited amount of information on lunar regolith is available to develop and optimize a machine for given lunar ground conditions. Therefore, any excavator designed for use on the lunar surface should have the ability to adapt to a wide range of operating conditions. A prototype cutterhead for the lunar excavator was built and tested at the Kennametal facility in Latrobe PA A. This paper discusses the results of initial material characterization as well as full scale tests of a prototype cutterhead inrelevent material. A brief review of anticipated production rates under various assumed ground conditions will also be presented.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with U.S. Foam Technologies, Inc1., conducted a series of experiments at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to study the stability, transport, control and fire extinguishing effectiveness of nitrogen-enhanced foam technology. "PID loops – also known as base layers or regulatory controls – form the foundation of any plant’s control layer and it is generally accepted that PID loop health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line. Keeping these thousands of control loops in good health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line: it reduces variability, improves quality and throughput, and decreases energy costs and raw material usage. This has been well proven and documented in many articles. In the last ten years, technology has evolved: control engineers can now keep track of control loop performance and link it to the root causes of variability. However, they lack industry-wide best practices and criteria for determining what can be considered as excellent, good, fair, or poor performance. To ensure that PID control loops continue to perform well and meet their objectives, control engineers need a combination of (a) an appropriate monitoring technology and (b) best practices for doing the maintenance of base layer controls.Most plants have limited resources and operate with an increasing number of constraints; therefore, using the right tools and including reports in daily workflow is key for success. This paper suggests roles and responsibilities of key players needed to work toward control performance best practices and discuss organisational changes to succeed.INTRODUCTIONAlthough PID controllers are reliable workhorses in the process industry, they are often underrated. Since the 1980’s, computer control has evolved and the control algorithms used by control engineers have become increasingly complex. However, PID controllers still handle over 90% of the control loops in operating plants. Table 1 shows the savings that can be realized by achieving best-practice in several different process control categories (Brisk, 2004). The savings are expressed as a percentage of production costs."

Membrane technology has been available for about 30 years, but has been used very sparingly within the general mining industry. However, recent developments in polymer chemistry, spiral wound element construction, pretreatment equipment and element cleaning techniques have improved the reliability and robustness of membrane based systems. These improvements have expanded the potential to use this "new" technology to enhance critical recoveries of gold and silver in heap leaching operations or in the extraction circuit. Another opportunity for the mining industry will be to use membrane technology in new processes like controlling organic acids or ammonium thiosul­fate to enhance gold and silver extraction during leaching opera­tions. Finally, the most common use for membrane technology is for the control of mining water balance and acid mine drainage issues. Polymeric membranes, specifically thin-film composites, have been developed that will purify, fractionate or concentrate gold or silver. Recent applications have been developed for spi­ral wound modules that operate across the pH spectrum from 0 to 14. Systems using membranes have been constructed that operated on feed streams from 200° C to 3000 centipoise. Most recently, membrane based systems have been pilot tested suc­cessfully to purify solvents, like LIX. Opportunities exist to apply membrane technology to concen­trate gold and silver cyanide solutions with thin-film composite Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes at elevated pH values above 10. Incorporating membrane technology could allow one to increase production without incurring additional expansion of the gold extraction side of the process. Furthermore, free cyanide is not rejected by the Reverse Osmosis membranes, but other inorganic salts are rejected 98+%, thereby, allowing an essentially ion free, except for the free cyanide, to be recirculat­ed back to the heap leach operation for enhanced extraction.

Boddington Gold Mine is situated 130km South-east of Perth, WA. The operation is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd. The Direct Leach plant was commissioned in mid 1986 at a rate of 3 million tonnes per annum. The plant was upgraded to 4.5 mtpa in 1988 and almost immediately to 6mtpa in 1989. Subsequent debottlenecking resulted in further increases in throughput up to 7mtpa by 1991. The SupergenelBasement Plant was constructed in 1990 and commissioned in early 1991. It was designed to process both copper-gold-silver anomalies within the laterite gold orebody and future hard rock ores. The Supergene plant incorporated control potential s­ulphidisation (CPS) and flotation ahead of CIL to remove a host of copper minerals. It operated in that configuration for 2 years at rates up to 350,000 tpa and average grades of 6.0 git gold and 1.2% copper. Gold recovery averaged 90.7% and copper recovery averaged 80.0% before the flotation circuit was decommissioned in March 1993. Quartz hosted high grade, free milling oxide and basement ores were discovered at the northern end of the orebody in 1990 and now comprise the major feed source to the basement plant. Oxide ores are currently milled at a rate of 550,000 tpa, while basement ores are milled at a 420,000 tpa rate. Metallurgical testwork during the feasibility stages indicated that up to 30% of gold in plant feed could be recovered by gravity separation methods. It was also highlighted that signifi­cant improvements in overall plant recovery and reduced operating costs would be achieved by maximising gravity gold recovery ahead of cyanidation. To achieve this, rec;iesign and upgrade of the gravity circuit was necessary.

Many gold ores are known to be refractory so that conventional cyanide processing will result in serious losses of gold and silver values. A significant percentage of these refractory ores contain aresenopyrite and the gold and silver is usually encapsulated within this matrix as well as the pyrite matrix. Normally the values can be recovered as flotation concentrates because of the sulfide compounds with recoveries of over 90% and at very good grades. In order to free the gold and silver, the sulfide matrix must be destroyed. This can presently be achieved by (1) pressure­temperature leaching (2) roasting and (3) bacterial leaching. All of them have advantages and disadvantages as well as an obviously increased cost for the each processing method. However, the increased gold and silver recovery should and must more than offset this cost. It is believed that gold recovery should be well over 90% from the concentrate so that overall recovery from the ore should be in the 90-95% region. All three processes must consider pollution control of both sulfur and arsenic to prevent contamination of air, water or land through improper waste disposal. This paper will concern only bacterial leaching and its necessary control of effluents and solids. Sulfur does not appear to be a problem as the element is oxidized to sulfate and is precipitated with an acceptable solubility. Other important improvements that must be controlled are arsenic and iron which are present as significant values (1-12 g/1 of arsenic, 20-40 g/1 of iron). In addition much smaller values of base metals, aluminum and magnesium can be present as well as other elements depending on the ore and these must be low enough after treatment to meet EPA regulations.

In early 2021, DFI formed a Foundation Reuse Task Force due to concurrent and coincidental discussions of this topic during meetings of the Subsurface Char- acterization for Deep Foundations and Testing and Evaluation committees. Interested members from both commit- tees, as well as of the Sustainability Com- mittee, joined forces to form the task force. The task force mission is to promote foundation reuse by leveraging experi- ence among DFI members and collabo- rating across pertinent committees. General goals of the task force are to identify, assess and reduce risks associated with reuse; to educate owners and decision-makers about reuse; and to improve the investigation, design, construction and testing practices associated with reuse. One of the first orders of business for the task force was to organize a roundtable discussion of foundation reuse for DFI's 46th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations in Las Vegas. Last fall's discussion was framed as a continuation of the successful "Horses for Courses" session of SuperPile '21, which also focused on foundation reuse. However, whereas the SuperPile session focused on technical content, the annual conference panel on October 13, 2021, was envisioned as a less technical conversation that emphasized audience participation while addressing approaches to decisions about foundation reuse issues. Paper presented at Geofluids '93, held in Torquay, UK, 4-7 May 1993. The tin field consists of a fragment of Lower Proterozoic volcanosedimentary rocks surrounded by granitoids. Almost all the significant deposits are hosted by arkoses and are classified as replacement and space-filling types, with particular styles of mineralisation dominating at different mines. Petrological and geochemical investigation of borehole cores from four centres indicated the presence of a stratified zone 500-600 m thick and continuous over at least 20 km along strike, consisting of pervasively altered clastic arenitic sediments. The alteration is zoned into a grey-green sodic albitised footwall, an 80 m thick sericitised-tourmalinised sulphidic tin zone and a red haematitic potassic hanging-wall. The zoning and the localisation of three cassiterite phases are consistent with the tectonic history and with multiple pulses of stanniferous hydrothermal fluids derived from late differentiates of the granites over a prolonged period. Areas of high fracture density acted as conduits for the fluids, whose initially rapid ascent was retarded by decreasing pressure contrast, limited development of fracturing and/or impermeable shaly arkose to cause lateral spreading and pervasive alteration over a broad, stratified front. Lateral overlapping of local fronts at the various centres suggests a continuous zone, while the many petrological and geochemical similarities point to a shared fluid composition

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (sec. 303 (b)) stipulates that no working section of the mine shall contain more than 0.5 percent carbon dioxide and no harmful quantities of other noxious or poisonous gases such as the oxides of nitrogen. The concentration of methane should at all times be maintained below one percent. A split of air returning from any working section shall contain no more than 1.5 percent of methane (sec. 303 (i) (2)) and air that has passed by an opening of any abandoned area shall not be used to ventilate any working place in the coal mine if such air contains more than 0.25 percent of methane (sec. 303 (j)). Methane concentration in the returns from the bleeder entries should not exceed 2.0 percent (sec. 303 (i) (3)), and no air that has passed through an opening which is inaccessible for examination shall be used to ventilate any active areas. While the air quantity requirements alone can easily be met, the governing condition in most mines is the dilution requirements for quality control. A sufficient quantity of air is required to render harmless and carry away noxious and respirable pollutants. In recent years, changes in coal extraction methods, rates of advance, location of available reserves, position of prominent methane sources and horizons, and geological sequences have contributed sig¬nificantly to alterations in rates, patterns and character of numerous methane emissions. Gas production of 10 to 15 million standard cubic feet per day is not uncommon from deep mines (Cervik, 1969). Launching the Queensland Water Plan 2005 - 2010 in August 2005, Premier Peter Beattie compared the stateÆs water resources with liquid gold. QueenslandÆs peak industry body for the minerals and energy sector, the Queensland Resources Council (QRC), believes the analogy is appropriate. During early development of an industry water strategy, it has become apparent that water is like liquid gold, in that it is revered, hoarded, recycled, priced on purity, a magnet for speculators, both difficult and expensive to transport effectively, heavily regulated and fundamentally linked to issues of security. To date it has generally been economic and relatively straightforward for the resources sector to secure water. Although production has not been compromised, this must not be grounds for complacency as there is every indication that water will continue to become increasingly expensive, more tightly regulated and, relative to a growing demand for a finite water supply, increasingly scarce. During 2006, QRC has developed and is implementing a voluntary industry water strategy to address a range of challenges confronting the resource sectorÆs security of access to water. As a consequence of, at times, protracted community consultations over QueenslandÆs catchment-based water planning processes it has become clear that many community stakeholders have outdated perceptions of the stateÆs resources sector. Once established, QRCÆs water strategy will incorporate a community engagement campaign to present the industryÆs credentials as a leader in water resource management. The development of QRCÆs water strategy, and the challenges the strategy is designed to address, provides insight into the fundamental reforms that are occurring in how water is managed and regulated in Queensland. These reforms have implications for how government policies are designed and administered and also for how industry engages with communities during this transition process.

"In an attempt to raise the copper grade of Printed Circuit board (PCB) by removing other components, carbonization treatment was investigated. The crushed PCB without surface-mounted parts was carbonized under nitrogen atmosphere. After screening, the char was classified by size into oversized pieces, undersized pieces and powder. The copper foil and glass fiber pieces were liberated and collected in undersized fraction. The liberation of copper foil from the oversized pieces was also investigated. The copper foil was liberated easily from glass fiber by stamping treatment. Liberation rate of copper foil was high at high carbonized temperature. The experimental results indicated that 90% of oversized char was liberated and the copper foil recovery from PCB carbonized at 1073K was 110kg/t. The copper recovery from char powder by flotation was also investigated. 15% of the copper grade and 80 % of the copper recovery were obtained, whereas the removal rate of silicon was 55%.IntroductionWaste Electrical and Electronic Equipments (WEEEs) should be recycled because they have many kinds of valuable materials and most WEEEs include Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). In Japan, about 30 km2 per year of Printed Circuit board (PCB) has been produced [1], PCBs are normally separated from WEEEs and picked up by hand and sold to non-ferrous metal market because PCBs include high grade of copper and other precious metal such as gold, silver and palladium [2]. However, PCB also has impurities such as silicon, aluminum and calcium which are slag materials in non-ferrous smelting process, and other harmful elements such as lead, bromine and antimony. Low grade PCBs are sold after removal of invaluable parts or sometimes land filled without any treatment"

A new model for hollow rock bolts which comprises rock material, hollow bolt material, bolt/rock interface, is developed on the base of the composite element method (CEM). The main advantage of the new model is that it can be incorporated into the conventional finite element analysis. So the mesh generation of bolted rock structures becomes more convenient and feasible, which is very important in the optimisation of reinforcement design: the mesh can be kept unchanged when the number and orientation of bolts are adjusted. The comparison of the calculation results with a conventional FE approach shows the robustness of the proposed method. Un nouveau modèle numérique de boulons creux comprenant la roche, le matériau du boulon creux et l’interface roche / boulon est développé sur la base de la méthode des éléments composites (CEM). L’avantage principal du nouveau modèle est la possibilité de l’incorporer dans une analyse aux éléments finis conventionnelle. Ainsi la génération du maillage d’une structure rocheuse ancrée devient plus simple ce qui est très important pour une optimisation du projet : en cas d’ajustement du nombre et de l’orientation des boulons, le maillage reste inchangé. La comparaison de résultats de calcul avec ceux obtenus par un code aux éléments finis conventionnel montre la robustesse de la méthode proposée. Auf der Grundlage der Verbund-Element-Methode (CEM) wird ein neues Modell für hohle Reibungsanker entwickelt, das den Fels, das Ankermaterial und die Kontaktfläche Fels / Anker umfasst. Der Hauptvorteil des neuen Modells ist die Möglichkeit, es in eine konventionelle FE-Analyse einzubetten. So wird die Netz-Generierung für verankerte Fels-Bauwerke einfacher, was für die Optimierung des Verankerungs-Projekts von Wichtigkeit ist: wenn Zahl und Orientierung der Anker variiert werden, bleibt das Netz unverändert. IN my opinion antimony* is a composition made by Nature to create a metallic mineral that is overflowing with an undue proportion of hot and dry material and with its moisture poorly mixed, with an effect wholly contrary to the composition of metals. Therefore, it comes to be, like quicksilver, a mineral deformity and monstrosity among metals. Or it might be a material that is about to reach metallic perfection, but is hindered from doing so by being mined too soon. I am persuaded to this opinion by seeing in it so many parts similar to those of metals, considering first its clear and brilliant color and its great weight and then the regulus† that it leaves at the bottom of the vessel on melting. Obviously it has in it much earthiness, as is attested by the odor of its sulphurous burning, its imperfect blending, its defective mixture, its difficult fusion, and finally the character of its regulus, for although this is very white and almost more shining than silver, it is much more brittle than glass. [28] The practical philosophers make great use of it in their alchemistic work in order, they say, to make an oil that they believe gives the color of gold to fixed silver. For this reason many of them hold it in high repute, especially the kind that has long thin fibers like a bundle of bristles. Although the effects of sea level changes on ore concentration processes are to some extent obvious with certain deposits, e.g. beach placer deposits, they have been largely overlooked with others such as Mississippi Valley type lead-zinc deposits. It is contended that sea level variations may have more profound effects on a wide range of deposits than has previously been appreciated. These deposits include not only placer'and residual deposits but also stratiform copper deposits, Mississippi Valley type deposits, stratiform manganese deposits and Minette type iron deposits. Sea levels in paralic basins profoundly affect the influx of 'detrital sediment, and this has to be suppressed to allow for the accumulation of thick rich deposits of coal evaporites, phosphate or metalliferous sediment. Emergence can be associated with oxidized waters, erosion, and,solution of soluble rocks. Submergence can reverse the Eh trend and can lead to preservation of ores. Both realms of surficial sedimentary environments and subsurface diagenetic environments can be affected by changes in water pressure, gas pressure (pC02), Eh, pH, and temperature as sea levels fluctuate. Even relatively small sea level changes may have profound effects. For example, there is some evidence to suggest that when the level dropped below 100 metres about 10,000 years ago, the Red Sea became isolated by the sill at Bab el Mandeb in the south, and evaporated away to leave a series of shallow lakes. The Red Sea is 1 to 2 km deep. It was at times such as this that the well-known copper-zinc mineralization developed in the Red Sea trough. Changes in sea level also affect the stability field of gas hydrates which can yield large volumes of gas leading to mass movements on the sea floor (Warnke, 1986).

Realising that current roadway development performance levels were unlikely to sustain new generation high-capacity (15 Mt/a) longwall mines then being planned, the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) established a Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG) in 2005 to develop a research strategy targeted at improving roadway development performance in Australian longwall mines. The initial phase of the project identified a number of factors that differentiated best practice mines from others, and proposed a multi-faceted research strategy encompassing both short- and long-term research initiatives, including:conducting regular benchmarking studies across the industry to identify factors contributing to improved performance and to monitor performance trends,conducting regular industry roadway development operatorsÆ workshops to facilitate the transfer of successful roadway development improvement initiatives throughout the industry and facilitate networking between development practitioners,development of alternative skin reinforcement and containment measures that would eliminate the use of steel mesh and enable face support systems to be fully automated,development of automated bolting and mesh handling systems that would enable operators to be removed from the immediate face area,development of a body of knowledge of industry roadway development practice,development of a web-based information management system to capture and transfer emerging developments in roadway development practice and technology,reviewing the Australian civil tunnelling and underground metalliferous mining sectors to identify practices and technologies that could potentially be utilised to improve roadway development performance, anddeveloping a new generation high-capacity mining system capable of +10 metres per operating hour for 20 or more hours per day (CM2010). The paper reports on the progress of the above initiatives and outlines strategies to continue the pursuit for improved roadway development performance.

One of the challenges facing the gold industry in the 21st century is the continuing need to identify new reserves of economically treatable ores. Discoveries of large, metallurgically simple orebodies are becoming increasingly rarer, forcing companies to investigate options for the processing of ores which may present recovery, economic and/or environmental issues, requiring innovative approaches to their treatment. Ores which contain naturally occurring carbonaceous material (æpreg-robbing oresÆ) are an example of one such ore type. NewmontÆs Jundee operation contains zones of carbonaceous ore within the oxidised orebody. A program consisting of detailed laboratory work and extensive plant trials has been undertaken to assess the options of the processing of this material. Laboratory tests demonstrated the advantage of carbon-in-leach (CIL) over direct cyanide leaching and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) for treatment of these ores. The laboratory program identified several factors which would enhance overall gold recoveries where preg-robbing ore was being processed, including: keeping preg-robbing ore separate from non-graphitic ore; maximising gravity recovery; and ensuring the plant operates in æpureÆ CIL mode, ie no leaching prior to first adsorption tank. Several plant trials were undertaken to assess the economic sustainability of treating moderate preg-robbing ores through a modified gravity/leach/adsorption circuit. Results indicated that where good operational control of the circuit was maintained to ensure high gravity recovery, minimal leaching prior to carbon contact, and maintenance of good, active carbon inventory, then acceptable and sustainable overall gold recoveries could be obtained. Sulfur isotope data are available for 18 low-sulfide orogenic gold systems hosted by the Lachlan Orogen in eastern New South Wales including those in the northern Hill End Trough (Hargraves, Hill End, Napoleon Reefs, Sofala-Wattle Flat, Stuart Town, Windeyer) and adjacent areas (Bodangora, Lucknow, Springfield), the Gilmore Fault Zone (Adelong, Sebastopol) and those in the Parkes district (Calarie, London-Victoria, Wyoming One-Myall United). Other systems for which data are available include Mongarlowe, Murrumbateman, McMahons Reef and Yalgogrin. The d34S data for many of the larger deposits including Adelong, Bodangora, Calarie, Hargraves, Hill End London-Victoria, Lucknow, Sebastopol, Sofala-Wattle Flat, Stuart Town and Windeyer (Group 1) are all very similar and have average d34S values close to zero per mil. Near 0ë d34S signatures imply that sulfur was sourced from a magmatic reservoir. Furthermore, the large Wyoming One deposit has d34S values significantly below 0ë with the data implying that sulfur was sourced from a fractionated magmatic reservoir. Group 2 deposits include those at Mongarlowe, Murrumbateman, Napoleon Reefs, McMahons Reef and Springfield . These deposits have average d34S values significantly above 0ë. With the exception of Springfield where sulfur was probably sourced from the Hill End Trough, Group 2 deposits are an order of magnitude smaller than Group 1 deposits. The results suggest that many of the larger orogenic-related gold deposits hosted by the Lachlan Orogen in eastern New South Wales derived sulfur and gold as a result of leaching and recycling from a magmatic reservoir. Alternatively, there may have been direct mantle-derived input; however, this is considered unlikely on geological grounds. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download.
