THE constancy of calibration, and to a great extent the life, of a thermoelement is dependent on the suitability of the primary protecting tube in which the wires are mounted, particularly when used at high temperatures. An ideal thermocouple protecting tube would be com-posed of materials that would not contaminate the thermoelement wires contained in it-one that would remain absolutely gas-tight ,it all temperatures of usage, that will not be attacked by gases, or other surrounding agencies, that is not destroyed by heat, that withstands sudden and extreme temperature changes, that affords a high degree of mechanical protection and does not deform at high temperatures, that is a good heat conductor and obtainable in small diameters so as to keep down lag factors. It has not yet been possible to produce tubes of any known mate-rials that will meet all of these conditions. In selecting protecting tubes, therefore, one should be chosen the characteristics of which best fit it to the particular conditions of usage. Frequently conditions are such that two tubes have to be used, a primary gas-tight protecting tube inside of a secondary protecting tube, because certain agencies will attack the primary gas-tight tube unless it is guarded by the outside tube.

It is desired to call the attention of young men who have had technical training and experience to the fact that their abilities can best be put at the service of the country by selecting a branch of service in which their special qualifications will be of the greatest use. The submarine force of the United States Navy requires the services, as officers on board submarines, of young men who have had technical training in mechanical and electrical engineering and who have had experience in these professions. It is intended to enroll a number of such men as provisional ensigns in the Naval Reserve Force, give then a course of instruction in deck duties at Annapolis and a course in submarine work at New London. Those who successfully pass these courses will then be sent on hoard submarines for regular duty. It is requested that any men who desire this duty and who are qualified as below outlined send their names and addresses to the Commander Submarine Force, U. S. S. Chicago, care of Postmaster, New York. Qualifications required: Desire to serve in submarines. Degree of M. E. E. E., or E. M. Two and one-half years' practical experience in profession. D. 1 Most Effective Salts A. Ammonium Phosphates Monammomium phosphate and diammonium phosphate (salts of ortho phosphoric acid) are superior to the triammonium salt in fire-resisting properties. Of these two, the monammomium salt is chemically the more stable. It is also held very retentively by a number of woods, thus reducing leaching out of the salt if exposed to water. Saturated aqueous solutions of mon- or di-ammonium phosphates have vapor preservatives corresponding to an atmospheric relative humidity of 9Z to 93 percent, the wood, will, therefore, not attract any moisture at humidities below this figure. Low concentrations (1 lb dry fire-retardant per cubic foot of the dry, treated timber) will stop flame and high concentration (5 lbs. per cubic foot) will prevent smoldering. B. Ammonium Sulphate In low concentrations ammonium sulphate has only a small effect on flame propagation, but its effect is marked when concentrations of the order of 20 percent are employed. It has no appreciable effect on smoldering. It is more corrosive to metals than are the phosphates, but is less corrosive than ammonium chloride or magnesium chloride. It is possible to leach it out of wood by prolonged and continuous action of water The vapor pressure of the saturated solution corresponds to 81 percent atmospheric humidity.

Coal-bearing beds underlie 23,000 square miles, about one third of Missouri's total area. Twelve out of more than twenty named coal seams have been or are being commercially mined. The remainder are too thin for commercial production. The coal is high volatile bituminous, with reserves estimated to be six billion tons, 1.24percent of U.S. coal reserves. Coal-bearing strata are generally thin seams which can be up to five feet thick. Typically, mined seams are about 28 inches thick. Coal deposits were first mined in Missouri in the 1840s, with the coal used primarily for domestic heating and blacksmithing. Production increased with the introduction of steamboats on the Mississippi. Coal production in 19 17 was six million tons. Production has steadily declined from a high of nearly seven million tons in 1984 to 2.3 million tons in 1991. Declining production is the result of several factors, including competition from other energy sources and the high sulfur content of Missouri coal. Today, coal-fired electric generating plants are the biggest consumers of Missouri coal. The Missouri regulatory program was conditionally approved November 21,1980, and fully approved January 17,1983. Its Abandoned Mine Land program was approved January 29, 1982.

Though the phenomenon of dragload is known for many decades, there is a lack of clear guidelines to evaluate the amount of dragload. The development of dragload depends on relative movement between pile and surrounding soil which is a complex phenomenon and requires a detailed numerical analysis. Bitumen layer has been used in the past with varying degree of success in reducing the dragload but the reduction appears to depend on number of parameters. No procedure is available in literature to estimate the dragload when a slip layer is applied on pile surface. This paper investigates performance of two commercially available bituminous coats to reduce the negative skin friction on pile. Direct shear test apparatus was used to model the interface friction between soil and coated pile surface. The lower half of direct shear box was replaced with either a concrete block or a mild steel block representing pile surface. Two types of bituminous coats namely Shalikote and bitumen having penetration value of 30-40 were evaluated in this study. Shearing resistance of pile material-coat-soil is found to be influenced by normal stress, coat thickness, and rate of shear. Laboratory results are compared with published field data where coated and uncoated piles have been load tested.

For nearly 100 years, the flotation plant metallurgist has often wondered what is happening æbeneath the frothÆ. To assist in unravelling this mystery, new technology has been developed as part of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 project, to measure gas dispersion characteristics (such as gas hold-up, superficial gas velocity and bubble size) in industrial flotation cells. These measurements have been conducted in a large number of cells of different types and sizes by researchers from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and JKTech. A large database has been developed and the contents of this database are described in this paper. Typical cell characterisation measurements show a wide spread in values, even in the same cell types and sizes performing similar duties. In conventional flotation cells, the typical gas hold-up values range from 3 - 20 per cent, bubble sizes range between 1 and 2 mm, and superficial gas velocity ranges from 1 to 2.5 cm/s. The ranges of cell characterisation measurements given in this paper will enable plant personnel to compare their operation to other similar types of operations from around Australia and the rest of the world, giving opportunities for further improvement to flotation plant operations.

Kovohute Pribram is a plant recycling lead wastes, lead acid batteries in particular. Relevant new recycling technologies are being gradually developed. Outdated technology of smelting lead plates has been replaced by a new technology based on processing of entire batteries in a blast furnace according to the process developed by know-how of German Varta company. The classical Harris refining has been substituted by the oxygen refining. New technologies aimed at utilization of related wastes arising from refining lead bullion in Kovohute Pribram are being developed in house. At present, a new technology of utilization of spent battery acid for extracting zinc from various wastes has been developed. Zinc oxide dross from alkaline refining of lead bullion, during which residual zinc from the preceding vacuum de-zincing is removed as well as waste zinc galvanic sludges (a product of neutralizing precipitation of metals from industrial wastewaters with lime) were treated. In this study, the new developed technology yielding basic zinc carbonate - a valuable raw material for zinc electrowinning, is described together with the first experience of applying the developed method to processing zinc wastes on a pilot scale. Most of the equipment used in the past to regenerate alkali solutions originating from Harris refinery was utilized in the practical realization of this new technology.

The activity in exploration and in the acquisition of prospective oil lands that reached such a high level in Colombia during 1936 gained momentum and reached unprecedented proportions during 1937. Both national and private lands were taken up. In the Magdalena Valley above Puerto Berrio, leases on large tracts of private lands are held by Richmond (Standard of California), Shell and Texas. Tropical also owns leases covering a block of acreage in this area near Honda. From Puerto Berrio to El Banco most of the acreage is of national ownership, and concessions covering parts of this area have been granted to Tropical, Socony Vacuum, Shell and others, while applications for additional concessions are pending. Latterly leases on private lands below the Lebrija River have been taken out by Shell and Richmond. In the drainage basins of the Meta and Guaviare Rivers of the Llanos region of eastern Colombia, several of the major companies have carried on geological exploration and it is understood that some private properties have been leased or optioned. Under Colombian law, subsoil rights are reserved to the nation on all lands that passed from Government ownership after Oct. 28, 1873. The potential for roof falls in underground mines remains a clear and present danger for mine workers. An investigation of ground conditions in nearly 50% of the nation’s underground stone mines found that the state of roof stability is primarily determined in a limited and subjective manner. These large opening mines, with roof heights typically of 7 m or more, make physical observation difficult. Although some mines use monitoring techniques to gain additional information on roof stability, this practice is usually short-term and localized to address ground conditions in a particular section or part of the mine. A methodology to assess the risk for a roof fall is proposed in a preliminary fashion based on engineering judgment acquired from extensive underground stone mine experience and examination of related literature. The proposed method utilizes an observational technique to identify the risk of roof falls in three categories. Case study scenarios provide a realistic picture of model implementation. Providing the mine level decision maker with an accurate assessment tool to ascertain the level of risk related to ground conditions is expected to reduce mine worker injuries and fatalities. Moreover, the presences of danger can be overcome with a clear picture of quantified ground conditions.

In recent years, an increasing number of urban soil contamination cases have been found during redevelopment of former factory sites. Hydroclassification technique, separating heavily contaminated fine soil particles from contaminated sites, is one of the economical remediation techniques for contaminated soil by heavy metals, but the separated fine soil particles are generally landfilled because of the difficulty in removing strongly adsorbed heavy metals on them. In the previous study, the authors have investigated the mechanism and the optimum condition of chlorination-volatilization technique to eliminate heavy metals from inorganic waste and found it was needed to heat up around 1273K. In this paper, a new remediation technique for lead contaminated fine soil particles is proposed. This technique is composed of chlorination and subsequent warm water extraction. In the chlorination step, water-insoluble lead complex is chlorinated to be water-soluble lead chloride without volatilization, by heating the soils with MgCl2-CaCl2-KCl salt mixture at relatively low temperature. By subsequent warm water extraction, lead chloride is leached out. Effects of chlorination conditions, such as time, temperature, composition of the salt and added salt ratio, on lead behavior were investigated. It was proved that lead concentration could be reduced below Japanese environmental standard.

Gypsum fouling is a common problem in the hydrometallurgical industry. It is a particular problem in free sulphuric acid neutralization, or iron removal operations where sulphates are removed from aqueous solutions by the addition of calcium-containing bases. Previous work revealed a strong correlation between the degree of gypsum supersaturation in the reactor and the rate of scale growth indicating that scale formation and growth are primarily controlled by chemical phenomena. However, the chemical behaviour of gypsum is variable and unpredictable with solution chemistry and temperature. Many of the "rules of thumb" that are used to predict its behaviour (and avoid fouling) are in fact based on gypsum solubility in water, rather than on real mixed metal sulphate systems. However, despite this unconventional solubility behaviour, we have been able to accurately model it in Ni, Mg, and Zn containing solutions over a wide range of temperature (25°C-90°C) and solution concentration (0-6 m) using the OLI simulation software. Furthermore, by studying fouling rates in a simulated continuous neutralization reactor, the relationship between process conditions and fouling rates were explained for the first time. This has led to an understanding of how techniques for minimizing gypsum fouling work.

When Duval Sulphur & Potash Co. awarded pre- mining stripping and early mining at Esperanza to an independent contractor, it was agreed that monthly payments for excavation were to be made on a truck count. At six-month intervals, however, adjustments must be made on the basis of actual excavation or cut from the pit area. It was estimated that it would be three times more expensive to have the pit sectioned by chain and transit survey than to use photogrammetry, since it would take two crews of three men approximately two weeks to do the field work, another two weeks to plot the sections, and additional time to establish a control network. Therefore it was agreed to have the mine area mapped by photogrammetry for both the premined surface and for semi-annual check surveys necessary for intermediate settlements. A triangulation net was established with a maximum distance of 900 ft between control points. In about 30 working days a two-man survey crew, using a theodolite, set up and triangulated 30 stations and calculated their results. For ease in spotting on the photographs, control stations were marked on the ground with white-painted tires centered over the survey pins.

Appreciation and awareness of the unique nature of mineral investment and ultimate development of a mine are crucial in promoting sustainable development. Special characteristics of mineral development include high capital intensive, long pre-production period, high risk, and the unavoidable ?economic? depletion. This paper examines ways to integrate these unique attributes of the mineral industry into the educational process, so that a properly advised and knowledgeable culture in terms of a sustainable mineral industry can be developed. Specific approaches are investigated in order to achieve this objective. These include a stochastic evaluation of a mineral investment proposal, adding a premium to the cost of capital that is used for valuation process, and internalizing incidental costs to the private cost function, thereby realizing the true (vs. apparent) marginal social cost of the proposed development. Undoubtedly, a total evaluation of any mineral project that accounts for both tangible and intangible parameters will contribute to sustainable development objectives. By incorporating the practical application of apparent theoretical topics such as risk, probability, and externality, and their relevance and impact on mineral lifecycle (prospecting, exploration, development, exploitation, use, and ultimate disposal) into the educational process, it is hoped that a generation of technocrats and decision makers that are familiar with and concerned about sustainable development will emerge.

The removal of phosphorus from steelmaking slags is essential for recycling such slags to blast furnaces for recovery of their manganese, iron, and lime contents. Phosphorus is mainly concentrated in the dicalcium silicate phase of the slags (Fujita and Iwasaki, 1988, 1989; Suito, et al., 1977). Slow-cooling of steelmaking slags in an air atmosphere increased the grain sizes of constituent minerals; however satisfactory magnetic separation results could not be attained because of the close association of a strongly magnetic ferrite phase with dicalcium silicate (Fujita and Iwasaki, 1988). Curie point of the strongly magnetic ferrite phase in the slow- cooled steelmaking slags was investigated and an attempt was made to separate the phosphorus-bearing dicalcium silicate phase in ground slag pulps heated to a temperature exceeding the Curie point. Materials and methods Slag samples, heated to its fusion temperature of 1370°C and slow-cooled in an air atmosphere, were ground dry to -90 µm (about 170mesh) in a ring grinder. The ground sample was pulped to 1% solids in distilled water using 1 kg/t sodium hexametaphosphate as a dispersant and separated in a Sala high gradient magnetic separator, Laboratory Model 10-15- 20B, using a 100-mesh expanded metal matrix and 300 m/h flow rate.

What do you think are the major problems that the mining industry is facing? While I don't have any intensive knowledge of the various problems that plague our industry, I know that they are all part and parcel of a more complex and fundamental question: What must we do to make mineral extraction successful, safe, and profitable? Obviously, as mining people, we must continue to expand our technical know-how and to make better use of it. In today's context, however, that is not enough. We must also improve the "public image" of the mining industry. Why? Because the key word in the term "public image" is: the public. Many people in our country and in Congress, for instance, are against strip mining-and some are even against underground mining. Pressures from the public, from voters, have affected past, present, and new legislation. And government controls can be a major problem in any industry, let alone mining. At first, people ask government to intervene, act, or resolve problems, even in management and labor contract negotiations. But later, after Washington gets involved, there are clashes between departments and personalities, and eventually there is resentment against the interference with mining operations or our daily lives.

Xanthates and dithiophosphates are the most commonly used collectors in the flotation of sulfide minerals. Other reagents such as thionocarbamates, mercaptobenzothiazoles (MBT), mercaptans and xanthogen formates occupy niche positions in industrial collector use. Over the last ten years there has been much activity by chemical companies to develop new collector compositions. The new collectors are aimed at meeting specific process needs such as recovering an increment of valuable metals, improved sulfide separations, increased flotation kinetics, and reducing reagents costs. A review of the patent literature shows that American Cyanamid (Cytec), Dow Chemical, Phillips Petroleum, Sentrachem Ltd., Henkel, Montan Chemicals and Elf Aquitaine, among others, have been active in sulfide collector research. Several companies have achieved considerable success in laboratory and plant tests of the new collectors; however, commercial acceptance for plant usage has been slow. Those most advanced have been plant tested extensively and some are in day-to-day use. The new collector types in this category are: Modified thionocarbamates, dithiophosphinates, organic sulfides, trithiocarbonates, monothiophosphates, and modified thioureas. Others such as substituted mercaptobenzothiazoles and monothiophosphinates have been tested in the laboratory. The chemistry of collectors developed in the last 10 years, their preparation, physical properties and their potential for commercial use are reviewed in this paper.

INTRODUCTION Coal characterization involves a variety of analyses which are designed to yield as much information as possible about the properties of coal. The types of analyses which are now regarded as necessary for any truly quantitative assessment of coal include the following: 1. proximate analysis 2. ultimate analysis 3. petrographic analysis The two traditional forms of analyses are the proximate and ultimate types. A proximate determination reveals the amount of moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon, and ash which are present in the coal. Nowadays, a sulfur determination is usually included in the proximate analysis. The ultimate analysis, in contrast, includes a major alkaline oxide determination, which tells how much sodium, calcium, and potassium are found in a sample. Sulfur forms, i.e. sulfide and sulfate vs organic sulfur, are also identified as well as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and trace element concentrations. Proximate and ultimate analyses have been used for many years. The petrographic analysis, one which identifies and quantifies organic microcomponents of coal, is a comparatively new technique of coal characterization. Petrography adds great detail to a coal analysis and, to be sure, is a necessary component of any complete analysis. Coal is not at all uniform in its composition. Major William R. Grunow, in a brief account off his military services, says: "I take pleasure in informing you that since my return from France I have been stationed at Camp A. A. Humphreys, Va., and am now on duty as a Senior Instructor at the Engineer Officers' Training School. While in France, I served as a company commander in the 305th Engineers and was later ordered to return to the United States for assignment to new troops. Upon arrival in the United States, I received my majority." P. F. Rodegerdts gives us the following account of his military service: "I enlisted in the Naval Reserve Flying Corps in San Francisco on Feb. 12, 1918. On February 10, I was ordered to Cambridge, Mass., where I was enrolled for the course in technical aircraft construction given at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After successfully completing the course of instruction, I spent six weeks in practical construction of seaplanes at the Curtiss aeroplane factory in Buffalo.
