Both theory and experience tell us that spatially distributed energy sources generate a more complex family of seismic waves than do point sources. The resulting effects in the near field (for close-in blasting) are significantly different than those from point sources although, at great distances from the source, the seismic waves take on many of the characteristics of point sources and can often be treated as such.

Successful preliminary experiments at the University of North Carolina indicate that computers can provide speedy, accurate identification of the mineral content of rock samples. In just two minutes, the University's Univac 1105 computer solves the complex equations that would often require more than four hours using conventional methods. In addition, the computer is frequently spotting minerals that a geologist might miss simply because he wasn't looking for them.

An application of a time series and systems analysis modeling technique to blast vibration data is discussed. The vibration data was taken from a rock support structure and the surrounding rock mass at distances close (less than 15 feet) to a blast. The analysis technique provides quantitative information on the frequencies of ground motion as well as the frequencies and damping ratios of a near-field support structure.

This paper examines the aspects of differing types of blasting cuts in underground headings with consideration to the reduction of number of holes and costs. At least one comparison study is related where costs per advance meter were significantly improved. The technical aspect of the paper covers a study of the effects of various blasthole delay intervals on resulting crater volume, ground vibration, and fragmentation for six hole V-cuts.

A method for the preparation of zirconia- toughened mullite using dc plasma is presented. An indigenously developed 50-kW thermal plasma reactor is used for the preparation of zirconia-toughened mullite using a dissociated zircon and alumina mixture. Both XRD and SEM studies of the product confirmed the formation of mullite and zirconia. The zirconia grew as equiaxed grains of uniform size (~5 µm) in a mullite matrix.

The spherical element computer code DMC (Distinct Motion Code) used to model rock motion resulting from blasting has been enhanced to allow routine computer simulations of bench blasting. The enhancements required for bench blast simulation include: 1) modifying the gas flow portion of DMC, 2) adding a new explosive gas equation of state capability, 3) modifying the porosity calculation, and 4) accounting for blastwell spacing parallel to the face.

The author has been involved in dealings with Aboriginal groups over this period. The purpose of the project was two fold: 1. To determine whether Pyrodex, a propellant, manufactured by the Hodgdon Powder Company, could be used as a substitute for high explosives for presplitting in granite and other materials. 2. To determine if Pyrodex, a slow reacting propellant which produces no stress waves in rock because it reacts subsonically, could cause the rock to crack similar to the results achieved with high explosives.

This paper is of conceptual nature. The authors present their idea of creating an integrated and intelligent excavation design system. Research work has just been started and the results will be addressed during presentation of this paper. The authors are currently engaged in a pilot study and expect to build a feasibility prototype expert system (establishing the numerical-cognitive coupling in excavation design) by the end of this year.

Ltd. and Freeport Queensland Nickel Incorporated, use ten Herreshoff roasters, for the reduction of ground lateritic nickel and cobalt containing ores.Initially the roasting section of the plant limited production, due to high down time.The use of technology developed and adapted over a number of years has achieved significant increase in on line time and a minimization of costs.

Extraction of zinc(II) from hydrochloric acid solutions is discussed. The literature on the extraction of zinc(II) in the presence of iron(III) and iron(II) with various basic and solvating reagents has been reviewed. It was found that tributyl phosphate (TBP) is the best compromise, and permits both effective extraction of zinc(II) and its stripping with water. The process was confirmed in a continuous laboratory mixer-settler circuit.

Increasing public awareness is probably the single most important challenge faced by any blasting contractor today. This increased awareness usually results in an outcry for tighter regulations and restrictions on those in the blasting industry. Those affected do not often understand the dynamics of blasting and are simply fearful of the unknown. This paper discusses the application of Integrated Inertial/GPS technology for position determination of earthmoving equipment in an open-pit mine. Different GPS augmentation methodologies are introduced and discussed. Principles for the operation of the Applanix POS MC (Position and Orientation System for Machine Control) are also presented, together with test results conducted at the Twin Creeks Newmont mine, using the POS MC and Caterpillar’s CAES (Computer Aided Earthmoving System).
