It will hardly be worth while to spend time over the discovery of this mine, how lumps of galena were picked up and brought to town, and how legends were told of an old mine from which Revolutionary bullets were made. This is an entirely new mine, with no evidences of former or ancient workings in its immediate vicinity to guide or attract the prospector. The first pit was opened in May, 1874. In August I made a visit to this pit, which was 6 feet wide in the northwest direction, 12 feet long north 80° east, and 6 feet deep..About 4 tons of a galena carrying gray copper, siderite, and quartz, had been taken from this pit. Rapid depletion of the world's mineral deposits combined with the expanding demand for metals places great pressure on our ability to provide technologically and economically feasible processes to recover greater amounts of metals from progressively lower grade sources. Chemical mining is one area in which expanding research and development can provide new processes or refinements to existing ones. These new techniques could result in increased production of metals from materials now considered uneconomic to process by current technology. To mine by chemicals requires the interaction of such disciplines as hydrometallurgy, microbiology, chemistry (both organic and inorganic), fluid flow, mineralogy, geology, and of course, economics. One of the least understood areas but one which may end up being an essential part of any chemical mining process is microbiology, i.e., the role of microorganisms in altering minerals and metals in solution.

Commercially available online particle size analyzers (OPSA) are in their third decade of development (Palangio, T.C., 1985), (Franklin, J. A., Maerz, N.H., 1987), (Maerz, N.H., Franklin, J.A., and Coursen, D.L., 1987). The installed base of operating analyzer numbers is in the hundreds. This paper takes a look at five critically important relationships that users have discovered through the use of OPSA systems. The two key attributes of these systems are: 1) consistency and, 2) historical context compared with traditional practices.

Before we look at what the challenges and opportunities for future coal mining will be, it is appropriate to have a look at whether there will be a coal industry in the future. There is much talk about the damage caused by the burning of fossil fuels and the need to replace coal and oil with more environmentally friendly energy sources. Yes, there is evidence that the current practice in burning of fossil fuel has certain negative environmental effects, however, the adverse effects for global economic development from inappropriate measures to control greenhouse gas emissions would be severe.

In this paper, autogenous grinding is defined as the combined crushing and grinder of a run-of-mine ore or the product from a primary crusher, in a single stage grinding mill. This is in contrast to pebble milling where pebbles are substituted for steel balls to grind a ball mill size feed. The autogenous mill to compete in efficiency with normal methods of crushing and grinding must not use greater power, must use less labor and steel, and must produce an equivalent product.

Construction of Western Mining Corporation's nickel refinery at Kwinana, Western Australia, commenced in July, 1968. Production of 15,000 tons per annum of refined nickel metal will commence early in 1970, The plant will also produce approx- imately 150,000 tons of ammonium sulphate0 The ammonia leach process which was developed by Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., and has been in operation at their plant at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada, for the past 15 years, will be used at Kwinana. The refinery will cost approximately 435 million, and will employ upwards of 250 people.

Norddeutsche Affinerie is the largest West European copper producer with an annual output of more than 350,000 tonnes of refined copper, about half of which is produced from copper concentrates. However, in addition to concentrates, Norddeutsche Affinerie processes secondary raw materials and recycling materials which contain a combination of copper and lead. These materials were previously treated in blast furnaces, a technology which has meanwhile been superseded at NA by the electric furnace process, primarily owing to the necessity of complying with the increasingly stringent requirements for environmental protection.

For the purposes of measurement and dosimetry of airborne radon daughters in uranium mines and elsewhere, it is important to understand their physicochemical state. This work deals with the chemical fate of 218Po in air. Extensive experiments were performed to determine the rate of neutralization, diffusion coefficient and fraction born charged of 218Po in air. The experiments were performed in a specially constructed apparatus of well-defined geometry. Careful control of experimental conditions made it possible to obtain more precise and detailed quantitative data than previously possible.

Cut and fillstoping using hydraulically placed mill tailings has become an essential feature of stoping operations in Kalgoorlie. ' Approximately 30 per cent of the total production is currently mined by this method. Fill is prepared by thickening or cycloning and is gravitated or pumped underground. The average pulp density is 70 per cent solids by weight, Recent cost reducing innovations are the use of steel passes, corrugated iron manways, polythene film sealing, and the replacing of vertical cement lined pipes with boreholes. Near Bunker, Mo., in the New Lead Belt, Ozark Lead Co. operates a 6000 tpd lead-zinc mine. Mined ore is transported to the surface in three mechanized and automated steps. The mine is developed by a rectangular-shaped sublevel haulage drift 15 ft high by 28 ft wide, driven on strike below the ore zones. Ore transfer raises were driven from the sublevel at locations near the shaft, 1500 ft distant, and on subsequent 1000 ft centers. These 6 x 5-ft raises are slashed to obtain maximum storage below dump points. These dump points are located on each mining level and are of steel and concrete construction. Spiral 12 X 24-ft inclines driven from the sub-level provide access to these levels for equipment and mine utilities.

JAMIE DAVIS: Our next speaker is Craig Ammar. He's director of equipment management for Cyprus Climax Metals Company. He has, prior to this assignment, been responsible for maintenance at Bagdad Copper, Cyprus' Miami smelter, and Thompson Creek. Like Jerry, he's very shy and retiring, and doesn't have any strong opinions about maintenance. INTRODUCTION CRAIG AMMAR: The ultimate goal behind implementing a proactive equipment management process is to provide capacity assurance and ultimately increase an organization's ability to generate revenue while reducing operating costs. Targeting such lofty objectives has brought many an organization to its knees, utilizing new maintenance techniques, concepts, and technology aimed at making our lives better and more organized. The root cause of such frustration generally stems from a lack of understanding or support for the fundamentals of implementing a proactive equipment management process. There are just two types of maintenance programs, reactive and proactive. It's an established fact that you need a little of both to run an effective equipment management process, obviously more of one (proactive) than the other. Here are some telltale signs that your equipment management process is in trouble: -Maintenance is performed as a knee jerk reaction when equipment fails. -Repeated and frequent equipment failures occur, with no focus on eliminating the root cause. -Sketchy, inconsistent, unclear preventive maintenance is performed or there is no support for the preventive maintenance process. -No predictive maintenance technology process is in place, or little support for predictive maintenance exists. -Less than 50 percent of your work is generated by the maintenance group resulting from inspections.

The Mercur Mine's autoclave is an alkaline pressure oxidation system, operating at 220°(428°F) and 3061 kPa (444 psig) (total). Up to 725 metric tons (800 st) of ore, grading 2.02 g per mt (0.059 oz/st) Au and containing 1 to 2% sulfide sulfur, are treated daily in this circuit. A mineralogical and chemical investigation was initiated to locate the cause of lower than anticipated gold recoveries. Greater than 70 wt. % of reduced sulfur is oxidized; therefore, the autoclave is operating at specification. The low recoveries were attributed to increased concentrations of organic carbon in refractory ore. Activated carbon concentration in the attached CIL circuit was increased from 15 to 40 g per 1, leach temperature held below 21°C (70°F), and carbon flow changed to counterflow. These measures resulted in gold recovery improving from 75 to 82%.

Taken in all its bearings there is, perhaps, no more interesting coal-field than that locally known and designated as " Wilmington," both on account of the superior qualities of its product as a household and steam fuel, when compared with other Illinois coal, and its geological position. The territory underlaid with coal, to which this name was originally given, embraced a very small area, including only the south half of sections 31 and 32 (township 33 north, range 9 east) in Wilmington township, and sections 5, 6, 7, 8, 17, 18, 19, 30, and 31, with occasional outliers in sections 3, 4, and 9, and, possibly, in sections 20, 28, 29, 30, and 32 (township 32 north, range 9 east) of Reed township, in Will County, comprising eleven square miles of workable coal within the known basin. Detonation pressure, or Chapman-Jouguet pressure, is an intrinsic property of an explosive, and like detonation velocity, is an indicator of explosive performance. Pressure and velocity are also important for calibrating computer codes and for other calculations such as the stress imparted to rock or metal by an explosive. The detonation pressures, P~cj, of many "ideal" explosives have been measured indirectly by recording some hydrodynamic flow variable other than pressure, with P~cj being inferred from hydrodynamics and the assumed Chapman-Jouguet equations. One such method is the difficult and expensive "aquarium technique''.] Commercial explosive manufacturers generally rely on estimates of P~cj generated by computer codes not explicitly designed for non-ideal explosives typically used in commercial applications. Over the last decade, U.S. national and government laboratories have developed in-situ gauge techniques such as the manganin gauge, for direct measurement of detonation pressure. Manganin is an alloy of copper, manganese and nickel, and is ideally suited for use as a pressure transducer because its electrical resistance changes with pressure, but is nearly constant with changes in temperature. A simplified manganin gauge technique adapted for use at a commercial test site is described and some initial results from measurements on commercial emulsion explosives are presented.

Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The stability of a ferrosilicon dense medium suspension is one of the most important parameters to keep under control since it determines the density gradient of the medium in the separation zone and thus directly influences separation sharpness. The stability of ferrosilicon suspensions were characterized using settling tests employing a differential pressure method. Particles smaller than 45 µm and especially the ore fines played an important role in the settling behaviour of the solids. In 2004, rare earths were not mined in the United States. The major supplier, Molycorp, continued to maintain a large stockpile of rare-earth concentrates and compounds. Major uses for these commodities were in automotive catalytic converters, petroleum fluid-cracking catalysts, permanent magnets, glass-polishing compounds, ceramics, metal-alloying additives, phosphors and rechargeable batteries. Consumption of refined rare-earth products decreased. The United States was a major importer and exporter of rare earths in 2004. Yttrium was not mined or refined in the United States in 2004. Imports from China, France and Japan accounted for most of the U.S. supply of yttrium compounds for refined yttrium products.

The concept of the system is to minimize costly unscheduled breakdowns of equipment by replacing components earlier than their "life" expectancy. Periodic unit services are scheduled according to pre-set constraints. Service sheets are generated by matching a job and component master listing based on assigned cyclic component lives. The system can provide accountability of all man-hours reported and history information can be selectively retrieved. By reducing unscheduled equipment shutdowns, this system allows for better utilization of manpower and an overall improvement in equipment reliability and availability.
