The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated aqueous electrolysis as a means for reducing lead chloride prepared by ferric chloride leaching of galena concentrate: NaC1 PbS + 2FeC13 ? PbC12 + 2FeC12 + S°. During electrolysis, metal was produced from solid lead chloride in contact with the cathode rather than from lead in solution. Relatively high current densities--up to 300 amp/ft2--were possible when operating in this way. A very simple cell, having a horizontal lead cathode at the bottom and a vertical graphite anode at the top, was employed. Lead chloride crystals, covering the cathode, were converted to metal powder during electrolysis, and chlorine gas or FeCls was produced at the anode, depending on the electrolyte composition. Electrolytes tried included aqueous solutions of HCI, NaCl, NH4Cl, and FeC12-NaC1. Optimum results (96-pct current efficiency, 0.23 kwhr/lb Pb) were obtained with 20 pct HC1 at 25° C, using a current density of 15 amp/ft2 and an electrode spacing of 1 inch. When the current density was increased, the energy requirement increased also but only to 0.41 kwhr/lb at 150 amp/fr3 and 0.58 kwhr/lb at 300 amp/ft2.

THREE GENERAL REASONS exist for applying metallic coatings to steel: to improve its appearance, to resist corrosion, and to resist wear and abrasion. Coating steel with other metals to improve the appearance and to resist corrosion is an old practice; coating for resistance to wear is one of the newer development's' that has become of importance with the development of chromium plating. Coating for improvement in appearance is practically confined to electroplating. Metals like copper, nickel, silver, chromium, cadmium, zinc and tin, because of their pleasing color, are used for this purpose. But these metals are never quite corrosion-proof, except cadmium and zinc, when applied directly to steel. Improvement in color or appearance must be permanent and therefore corrosion-resistant and tarnish-proof. For this reason, with the exception of cadmium, zinc and tin, the above metals are used in combination to obtain appearance and resistance to corrosion. Resistance to tarnish is dependent on the property of the particular metal. Chromium, being nontarnishable, has made it possible to obtain combination coatings of copper, nickel and chromium, copper and chromium, or nickel and chromium, which improve the appearance and also resist corrosion and tarnish. Such coatings find a wide field in decorative work particularly the copper-nickel-chromium combinations, and when properly applied are very satisfactory.

Biodegradation of cyanide by microorganisms isolated from solids previously exposed to cyanide has been investigated. Initial sodium cyanide concentration was 300 ppm at pH 10.5. The kinetics of biodegradation were found to be first order with respect to cyanide concentration, and the overall reaction rate constant is k = 0.102 day-1. The activation energy and the frequency factor were determined to be { A }Ea = 5.45 Kcal/mol and A = 1.28 x 10-2 sec-1, respectively. Based on these values, thermodynamic properties of an intermediate activated complex were assessed. All tests resulted in cyanide concentrations less than 0.1 ppm in about 35 days at 250C, whereas at 350C the time of biodegradation to reach this cyanide level was 30 days. Kinetic data were also established to relate biodegradation to amount of inoculum. The maximum theoretically-attainable rate, Vm , and the optimum amount of inoculum, K , were determined to be 4.8 x 10-4 M NaCN/day and 7.5 % of amount of inoculum. With respect to the mechanism of biodegradation, cyanide was shown to decompose to carbonate, bicarbonate and ammonia. Titrimetric analyses revealed concentrations of 5.6 x 10-3, 4.8 x 10-3 M, and 70.2 ppm for carbonate, bicarbonate and ammonia, respectively. The average cell population was determined to be 3.75 x 108 cells/mL.

"Organic Rankin Cycle (ORC) is an effective technology to transform low-grade energy resource into electricity. In this paper, based on thermodynamic principle, considering the waste heat resource lower than 120°C, thermodynamic properties of ORC with working fluids ofR245fa, mixed R21/R245fa and mixed Rl52a/R245fa were assessed. The results show that high evaporation temperature contributes to improved system performance. The Rankine Cycle that uses R21/R245fa can increase net cycle output, thermal efficiency and exergy efficiency by 3.02%, 2.35%, and 4.44%,respectively, as compared to that with pure R245fa. When using Rl52a/R245fa as working fluid, the net cycle output can increase by 3.83% at most, while the thermal efficiency decreases by 8.7%. These results indicate that R21/R245fa has a good advantage in improving the cycle thermodynamic performance.IntroductionOrganic Rankine cycle is usually used for low temperature power generation, and is applied to the conversion of geothermal energy, low-temperature solar energy, ocean thermal energy and industrial low-temperature waste heat etc. Traditional Rankine cycle is quite mature already, however, organic working fluids would affect significantly the general efficiency of the entire thermodynamic system. Thus, selection of proper working fluids and development of new highperformance cycle is becoming important."

"Microbiological metal recovery is an emerging technology likely to play an increasing role in commercial ore leaching, metal removal from process and waste streams, and perhaps ultimately in processing to yield metal products in specified forms or oxidation states. We are studying the potential for using microorganisms for the recovery of elements important to emerging materials technologies and for which domestic supplies are limited and/or low grade. Examples to be discussed include the bioaccumulation of yttrium and gallium. These elements are important in the production of new superconductor and semiconductor materials. However, limited domestic reserves and technologies for their recovery may cause supply problems. Quantitatively analyzing deformation of a tunnel with lining anomalies for structural safety evaluation is essential for sustainable tunnel engineering. However, a complete theory and associated methodology accounted for displacement of a built tunnel is absent. This manuscript introduces a novel characteristic matrix method proposed by the authors which is an integrated procedure that analyzes displacement of rock tunnels in operation. First, establish a numerical model expressing a specific state of the tunnel in interest. Derive the characteristic displacement modes by a unit disturbances and check their independency. Once the characteristic displacement modes are proved to be orthogonal (independent), they are ready for use. Given a tunnel displacement, modal decomposition returns the magnitude of each characteristic displacement modes that together consist the given displacement. By realizing the definite value of horizontal and vertical translation, rotation, uniform compression/expansion, elliptic deformation, triangular deformation…etc. for a tunnel displacement, one can distinguish tunnel displacement and deformation types from their modal composition. A circular tunnel with elastic structure and surrounded by elastic rock mass is chosen to demonstrate the outcome of characteristic modes and how they work. The influences of tunnel shape, elastic modulus ratio between rock mass and tunnel structure, and numbers of monitoring points on a tunnel profile were also discussed. Identifying possible tunnel deformation causes is attainable if further connections between mode combination and force increments were built.

Controlled thermolysis of gold(I) complex, [Au(C13H27COO)(PPh3)], at 180 °C for 5 h under an N2 atmosphere affords the new type of monodispersed spherical gold nanoparticles capped by myristate and a small amount of PPh3 ligands (average diameter 23±1.5 nm), in spite of no use of solvent, reducing agent and stabilizer. Much attention has been paid to the preparation and structure determination of transition metal nanoparticles, because of their widespread use in technological applications.1 In general, the chemical reduction of metal salts and organometallic complexes2 by the use of reducing agent is carried out to prepare gold nanoparticles. In some cases, a large amount of solvent and stabilizers such as surfactants,3 polymers4 and ligands5 are used to prevent agglomeration of particles and control the particle size. For instance, Brust et al. reported a two-phase reduction of AuCl4 - by NaBH4 in the presence of dodecanethiol as stabilizer to prepare gold nanoparticles.6 On the other hand, O?Brien et al. recently reported an one-phase preparation of gold nanoparticles by the reduction of AuCl4 - by NaBH4 in the mixture of tri-n-octylphosphine oxide and octadecylamine which act as both solvent and stabilizer, but this procedure also needs reducing agent.7

"The Mount Polley copper/gold project is located in central British Columbia and is currently being developed by Imperial Metals Corporation. Extensive laboratory and pilot plant testing was required to develop acceptable metallurgy for recovery of both sulphide and oxide copper-gold mineralization. Copper recovery is highly sensitive to oxide copper content of the feed whereas gold is primarily associated with the copper sulphide minerals. A conventional flowsheet where sulphide flotation is followed by sulphidization and oxide scavenging is described. The conventional flowsheet was used in a feasibility study which resulted in a favourable production decision at Mount Polley. Detailed engineering and permitting are in progress.More recently, laboratory and pilot testing of a new flotation reagent, S-6493*, an oxide specific collector, has indicated that improved copper recovery can be accomplished with reduced reagent consumption, including elimination of the sulphidization step, using S-6493 compared with the conventional flowsheet. The comparative metallurgical results using S-6493 and conventional sulphidization methods are presented, from both bench scale and pilot testing. Comparative economics of the conventional flowsheet and that using S-6493 are also presented. Advantages of S-6493 include reduced reagent costs, increased revenues from additional copper recovery, and overall reduction in capital and plant operating costs due to the simplified flowsheet. INTRODUCDONThe Mount Polley copper/gold property is located in Central British Columbia, 56 air kilometres northeast of Williams Lake. The first recorded exploration was in 1964. By 1989, a total of 238 diamond drill holes, totalling 27, 522 meters, was completed to detail reserves on the Mount Polley prospect. A number of drill core composites were submitted, containing a variety of oxide copper levels, for metallurgical flowsheet development. Six bulk samples were collected from surface trenches for additional bench scale testing and for pilot plant testing."

"During the continuous casting of peritectic steel slabs, mould fluxes with high crystallization capacity are usually chosen for improving slab surface quality. However, the lubrication condition of casting shell also could be deteriorated. Since precipitation of crystals within liquid slag film can change the composition and property of liquid slag over solid-liquid slag film interface region, its impacts on continuous casting process also are not clear. In order to clear this phenomenon, an experiment method was put forward, and mould fluxes for peritectic steel slabs continuous casting were selected and examined. The results reveal that after crystals have been separated, the crystallization capacity of leftover liquid slag increased with different levels, which could deteriorate the lubrication condition of casting shell and cause a series of problems. Thereby, mould fluxes with high crystallization capacity at beginning for heat transfer control and then weaker after crystallization should be considered in the future.IntroductionIn the continuous casting of peritectic steel slabs, contradiction between heat transfer control and slab shell lubrication by mould fluxes has been treated as a key problem for maintaining a smooth manufacturing process [ 1]. Strong and uneven horizontal heat flux over the meniscus region will cause uneven solidification of casting shell, especially for peritectic steel slab with enormous volume change caused by phase transition. All of those could cause surface defects like longitudinal crack [2-4]."

The term "fatigue" in mechanics, is used to refer to reduction in the strength of a material subjected to fluctuating or alternating stresses. Stresses that vary with time are called fluctuating stresses and if during fluctuation the stresses also change sign, they are called alternating stresses. In the field of rock mechanics, the term fatigue (static fatigue) has often been misused to refer to failure of geologic materials in time domain under constant load. To avoid confusion, we use the ten cyclic fatigue here to refer to failure of rock under alternating or fluctuating stresses. Fatigue in metals has been studied for over 100 years. Fatigue properties of geologic materials have, however, received little attention in the past. This is probably because until recently very little was known in regard to the behavior of geologic materials even under static loading. Secondly, suitable equipment for conducting cyclic fatigue experiments was not available until quite recently. A few cyclic fatigue studies have been undertaken on geologic materials to relate it to percussive or rotary drilling mechanisms (e. g. Grover et a11*; Burdine2). The results of these studies were inconclusive due to limited effort. Cyclic fatigue in concrete has been studied more extensively than geologic materials (e.g. Nordby3, Gray et al 4 and Bennett et a15) and mechanisms of fatigue in concrete are better understood than in geologic materials.

New modern water treatment technologies required for arsenic removal from waste waters contaminated extensively by various background sources from mining, industrial waste, agricultural waste, painting industry and natural geological bed rock system etc. Arsenic is a widely dispersed element in the earth's crust and exists at an average concentration of approximately 5 mg/kg. Arsenic (As) and heavy metals may be released from the mine wastes to the ground and surface water systems, as well as the geological environment due to their solubility and mobility. This research focuses on the effect of accelerated carbonation process for successful removal of heavy metal arsenic anions from artificial waste water and mining waste waters. This accelerated carbonation process is a simple and novel method with 85 ~ 88% removal efficiency. Carbonation has been studied as a process to further improve immobilization of solidified/stabilized waste and granular waste. After successful removal of arsenic anions from solid mining waste and its potential benefits for producing construction materials. Besides, the industrial and urban management systems are generating bulk solid mining wastes, and most often dumping them in open fields. To prevent the landfilling with mining waste, many efforts are being made for the recycling of different types of mining solid wastes with a view to utilizing them in the production of various construction materials.

The importance of goethite to Australian iron ore production is steadily increasing as the proportion of goethite-rich, martite-goethite bedded and channel iron deposits increases at the expense of declining production from high-grade microplaty hematite deposits. For this reason, an improved understanding of goethite in iron deposits, its genesis, goethite types and their physical and metallurgical properties is vital to maintaining optimum sintering and blast furnace performance in Asian steel mills.The terminology used to describe goethite in Australian iron deposits is currently highly variable. The discredited mineral name ‘limonite’ is still in widespread use as a field term for goethite and there are many misconceptions concerning goethite chemical grade and downstream physical and metallurgical properties. The goethite classification proposed here is based on geological and physical properties from which three types are recognised including brown goethite, dark brown-black vitreous goethite and highly microporous, friable yellow ochreous goethite.In practice, typical vitreous goethite with highly reflective surfaces and conchoidal fracturing, characteristic of the hard cap zone appears from X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and electron microprobe analysis to be significantly higher in Si (up to 18.7 wt per cent), Al (up to 3.5 wt per cent) and S (up to 0.14 wt per cent) compared to the generally very low (<1 wt per cent for Si and Al) levels of these elements in ochreous goethite and brown goethite. The data dispels the common misconception that friable earthy or yellow ochreous goethite is high in Al and Si and other chemical impurities. However, P was found to be consistently higher (mean of 0.112 wt per cent and up to 0.296 wt per cent) in ochreous goethite than brown goethite (mean of 0.011 wt per cent) or vitreous goethite (mean of 0.031 wt per cent). The highly porous microstructure of ochreous goethite is thought to have a much higher surface area, which may aid in preferential adsorption of P onto the ochreous goethite mineral surface.CITATION:Manuel, J R and Clout, J M F, 2017. As the first wave of precious metal heap leach closures and reclamation projects occur, a number of companies are being hit with costly surprises. While this paper refers specifically to U.S precious metal projects, it could be conceptually directed at copper leach operations and acid rock drainage (ARD) problems on an international basis. ARD is Mother Nature's version of heap leaching, only with different products and timing. Although many precious metal deposits tend to be small in comparison with some base metals systems (porphyry copper deposits), adjacent or nearby discoveries have extended the operating lives of numerous precious metal mines. Now, depleted reserves, several years of relatively depressed precious metals prices and some properties with technical difficulties have resulted in numerous mine closures. As a result, our industry is getting a diverse and comprehensive initial look at mine closure and final reclamation. The situation has been further complicated by the evolutionary trend in regulations and their enforcement and increasing public and political awareness of all environmental issues. Concurrent (proactive) vs. deferred (reactive) reclamation and a realistic early appraisal of ultimate reclamation and closure requirements, not just regulatory compliance, need to be a part of project design. The U.S. and Canada are the current fertile testing grounds and have set the design, regulation and closure standards for the next wave of operations in Latin America, the CIS (?), etc.

"CANMET’s research into underground coal mining is primarily conducted at the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL), established in 1981 to conduct safety research in underground coal mines. Located close to Canada’s largest underground coal producer, in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia, CBCRL’s program also includes the two western underground coal operations. CBCRL is a relatively small laboratory with a staff of thirteen — eight professionals and five support staff — with an annual budget of over $1 million. In order to maintain effective research response, flexibility is key and staff are increasingly working in project teams, crossing traditional section ties and also drawing from specialist expertise elsewhere within CANMET.CBCRL’s research activities have had a substantial impact on the Canadian underground coal mining industry, particularly in Cape Breton. CBCRL contributed to Cape Breton Development Corporation’s (CBDC’s) threefold reduction in lost-time accidents in the 1980s. Also, in the last four years alone, CBCRL’s work has enabled CBDC to save over $17 million in improved utilisation of reserves and cost savings. The work embraces the three traditional areas of mine environment, strata mechanics and mining technologies, however the current direction has been strongly influenced by recent external and internal factors. It is timely to review progress and recent directions."

"OceanaGold’s Didipio operation has been in operation for three years. Integral to the flow sheet design is a flash flotation circuit treating a portion of cyclone underflow, consisting of an Outotec SK-500 flash rougher and an Outotec TC10 flash cleaner and a SB-2500 falcon treating flash rougher concentrate to recover fine free gold.Flash copper recovery has been holding steady at 60 per cent, while flash gold recovery at 50 per cent. Gold recovery from the gravity circuit is 22 per cent, bringing the overall flash plus gravity gold recovery to 72 per cent.Operation of the flash rougher is mainly by pulp level control. Control of copper grade in the flash cleaner is mainly controlled by air inflow and flash cleaner pulp level control drives copper recovery. Despite an increasing focus by media, communities and activists driving an elevated regulatory focus in Australia and indeed some other mining jurisdictions, the mining industry globally has had limited successful mine lease relinquishments and transfers to support a next land use.Critique from anti-mining lobbyists frequently uses the large estimates from historically abandoned mine sites to influence risk-averse regulatory reforms to improve environmental performance. The mine rehabilitation regulatory processes in Australia, and specifically in the State of Queensland, are thus largely in place to prevent mining operators from abandoning their obligations.Regulatory responses to the lack of mine rehabilitation and closure performance in the last five to ten years have primarily focussed on compliance and enforcement of rehabilitation conditions in environmental approvals. Additionally, financial assurance measures have been tightened to protect against abandonment of rehabilitation obligations by the Industry, including the Chain of Responsibility legislation (Queensland Government, 2016b) in April 2016, to hold to account those who have benefitted from mining and processing/refining projects, and then avoid their environmental obligations.CITATION:Swart, P B and Erskine, P D, 2018. The benefits of historic mining to this country have been many, but have come at a cost to the environment that has only begun to be understood over the past twenty years. While estimates vary, it is generally recognized that there are over 200,000 inactive and abandoned hardrock mines, with most of them located in the western U.S. Only a fraction of them are believed to be sources of metal releases with significant adverse environmental effects to the watersheds and receiving streams. State water-quality and natural resource management agencies have noted that hundreds of miles of streams are metal-impacted, and the aggregate effects of these sites within watersheds and drainage basins is poorly understood. Resources for the environmental assessment of abandoned mine land (AML) sites and watersheds have been and continue to be limited. Few hardrock mining states receive substantial reclamation funds under the (coal) Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. EPA Region VIII (EPA8) has an estimated 90,000 abandoned mining, milling and smelter sites, mainly in Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. An estimated 13,000 of the sites may have metal releases causing Clean Water Act and CERCLA non-compliance. Results of inventories by states and federal land managing agencies, indicate it is plausible that only 3,000-4,000 of these sites may be causing significant environmental degradation.
