The composition and volume of geothermal fluids in New Zealand offers considerable potential for the extraction of various metals and minerals, as well as being a source of heat energy, steam and gases, and for use in generating electricity. While extracting products from geothermal fluids is technically feasible, positive economics is the key driver for commercial success; however, there is no assessment of this opportunity that identifies simple, cost-effective processing technologies and provides a greater understanding of the economic viability and barriers for implementing such technologies. Keywords: biosorption, cadmium, copper, biomass, spent zeolite. The majority of the industrial activities produce some kind of solid wastes. In this work two industrial residues (spent zeolite and wood sawdust) were chemically modified to increase their heavy metals sorption capacities. Manilkara longifolia (a Brazilian plant known as parajú) sawdust was first treated with NaOH and modified with different citric acid concentrations (0.6-1.2 mol/L) at 120°C, for 90 min. Infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of carboxylate groups in the wood structure as result of their mixing. Similarly, spent zeolites were also submitted to a chemical treatment (NaOH) to remove carbon deposited during oil cracking and to recover its sorption capacity. Batch experiments carried out at ambient temperature showed that both materials present sorption capacity for copper and cadmium comparable to weak acid ion exchange resins. A maximum of 78 mg-Cd/g and 59.7 mg-Cu/g as well as 29.9 mg-Cd/g and 14.6 mg-Cu/g were observed for the sawdust and the zeolite, respectively. The results were modeled according to the Freundlich and Langmuir equilibrium isotherms and compared with results of other studies.

Overlying the sulfide mineralization at Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes Mine is an oxidized zone up to one hundred meters in thickness. The principal copper minerals in this zone are chryso-colla, tenorite, cuprite, native copper and copper-manganese-iron wad. This ox¬idized zone also contains minor amounts of uranium ranging in concentration from 0.002 to 0.010 percent. Since pit development through 1980, some 38 million tonnes of oxide ore with copper contents greater than 0.6 percent have been brought to the surface. Copper in the oxide ore is extracted at Twin Buttes in, an agitated sulfuric acid leach plant followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning producing 90 tonnes per day of copper cathode. During leaching of the oxide ores small amounts of uranium are solubilized along with the copper values. This is not limited to Twin Buttes as most acidic copper bearing leach solutions throughout the southwestern United States contain small amounts of uranium.1

As a nation, we have been known as perhaps the most wasteful in history. From the perspective of engineers and builders on the other hand, planned obsolescence and demolition did beneficially pave way for growth and provided environment for new businesses. Recent economic recession and intense competition from overseas, however, have drastically changed the economics. The high cost of capital and the demise of indiscriminate plant expansion have totally altered the way we conduct our business and run our operations. As a response to increasing demands for better efficiency with little or no funding available, everyone is forced to make do and do better with whatever little he has. Today it nay not be an exaggeration to state that modification of existing facilities may have finally emerged as a way of life. This paper will outline examples of how several companies have effectively modified existing facilities to do more and do it efficiently without having to demolish everything and/or to spend a fortune.

J. B. Haffner, or "Barney" as he is known to his wide circle of friends, was born at Landskrona, Sweden, on Christmas Day, 1886. He attended grade and preparatory schools there and then went to the Royal Technical Institute at Stockholm from which he graduated as a mining engineer in 1910. During these school years he gained practical experience in his summer vacations by working in various mines in Sweden and other European countries. Upon graduation he set forth for the land of opportunity, the United States. Upon arrival in this country he found people everywhere talking about the fabulous gold fields in Alaska and thereupon set sail for Nome, to take part in placer gold mining operations. Returning to the States, Barney worked in Illinois coal mines for a time and then carried on some construction work in Oklahoma. Nova Scotia has been mining and exporting industrial minerals for over two hundred years. As an industrial mineral producer, this province continues to rank as the number one gypsum mining and exporting region in North America. Mining of many other commodities is ongoing, supplying many local and export markets. In all, excluding aggregate producers, there are nineteen industrial mineral producers operating at thirty sites producing nine commodities including anhydrite, barite, clay and shale, dolomite, gypsum, limestone, salt, silica sand and stone (Fig. I). Numerous aggregate producing operations supply all the province's aggregate requirements and export some of these materials to other regions of Atlantic Canada and as far away as Bermuda (Fig. 2) . Production value of industrial mineral commodities in Nova Scotia for 1982 was $105 million , representing 39% of the total value for all mineral production for the year. Because of the general improvement in the economy, indications are that the 1983 value of production will be higher.

In southwest Wyoming lies buried the world's largest source of natural sodium carbonate, or soda ash. Perhaps a hundred billion tons of trona (sodium sesquicarbonate) are contained in ancient lake beds in the Green River basin'). There the Green River Formation encloses more than 40 extensive beds of trona. At least 25 of these exceed 3 feet (1 meter) in thickness and most of them are more than 300 square miles in extent. Five have been exposed in mines and lie between 800 and 1500 feet below the surface. Others lie at depths of from 400 to 3500 feet. Three companies have underground mines that supply trona to adjacent soda ash plants. These are the FMC Corporation, Allied Chemical Corporation, and Stauffer Chemical Company. A fourth, Texasgulf Corporation, has a mine under development. In 1974, annual soda ash capacity in the Green River area was approximately 4,300,000 tons, which requires the mining of about 7,500,000 tons of trona.

Martha Mine is an open pit gold-silver mine, located within the township of Waihi, 150km southeast of Auckland and is operated as a joint venture between Normandy Mining Ltd. 67 %) as Manager and Otter Gold Mines Ltd. (33%). The deposit was historically mined, by underground methods from 1888 to 1952, producing 5.5 moz of gold and 30 moz of silver, from 11 mt of ore. The current operation began in 1988, producing, to June 1999 - 867,245 oz of gold and 5.5 moz of silver from 9.5 mt of ore. The licensed reserves were due to be mined out by late 2000. Consents were granted in December 1998 to allow the expansion of the operation through to 2007 accessing an additional 7.5 mt of ore at 3.4 gpt Au and 26.0 gpt Ag for 800,000 oz of gold and 6.4 moz of silver. The key elements of the expansion are: 1. Pit enlargement 2. Upgraded crushing and material handling facilities 3. Construction of a second tailings storage facility 4. Upgraded water treatment capacity 5. Increased operating capacity This paper presents an update of expansion activities to date.

Underwater exploration for marine resources using camera-equipped devices (OFOS, ROV, AUV) is receiving growing attention. This development is creating a continuously growing pile of digital underwater images leading to a serious bottleneck in the analysis. However, any harvesting strategy must be coupled to an efficient and effective assessment of the biodiversity in the area of interest and in nearby control areas. To integrate manual image and computational image interpretation on different levels (i.e. regarding geology and environmental sciences and taxonomy), sophisticated software support is required, which is not yet offered explicitly, neither by commercial software companies nor by academic or other publicly founded institutions. Here, we present the first version of a new digital asset management system that offers functionalities for easy data management, sharing, manual annotation and integration of computational modules for image enhancement/pre-processing and interpretation. The functionality is demonstrated with data from the CCZ provided by the BGR Hannover.

Most analysts determining tungsten trioxide in low grade samples are aware that colorimetric procedures do not possess the inherent disadvantages of gravimetric methods operating on milligram quantities of tungsten trioxide. Apart from the inaccuracies associated with weighing four or five milligrams of ignited oxide in a platinum crucible of about 30 gm. weight with a large surface area to absorb moisture, using a 5 gm. charge on samples less than about 0·15 per cent tungsten trioxide, it is extremely difficult toget complete or pure precipitation of tungsten with cinchonine, cinchonine plus alpha benzoin oxime, rhodamine B or any other of the commonly used precipitants. Table 2', No. 8, illustrates the low results obtained by gravimetric as opposed to colorimetric procedures. In addition the colorimetric determination requires only a small portion of the time consumed by gravimetric practices and the increased accuracy obtainable in low ranges together with the saving in time made it highly desirable to develop a colorimetric method suitable for King Island ores.The most commonly used colorimetric method is that introduced by Feigl and Krumholz (1932), since modified by various investigators (Grimaldi and North, 1943; Sandell, 1946; Westwood and Mayer, 1947; Gentry and Sherrington, 1948; Freund, Wright and Brookshier, 1951; Grouthamel and Johnson, 1954; and others). Longwall minim; is a highly mechanized, high productivity mining method that is finding increasing applications in coal. Although the method would be highly advantageous in certain hard rock mining applications it cannot be applied in hard rock because no suitable cutterhead exists for such materials. The wedge longwall cutterhead is a, roller cutter device that is wedge-shaped, with cutters arranged to eliminate the very large normal force ordinarily required to cause such cutters to penetrate hard rock. However, the wedge geometry cannot be extended to a point: special nose cutters are needed to open a narrow slot for the wedge. This report describes the design, fabrication, and successful field testing of these critical nose cutters.

The concentration of low grade iron ores to pellets or sinter fines suitable for blast furnace feed or direct reduction is highly energy intensive and costly in terns of both size reduction and separatory processes. Large equipment with high throughputs are required to make the fine grinds and multi-stage separations economical. Control of these circuits is essential to producing a high grade product. As a result, iron ore concentrators possess some of the more sophisticated instrumentation for process control in the mineral dressing industry. These instruments must characterize flowstreams of up to 8,000 gpm where 80% of the particles are less than 50 µm. The past decade has been one where enormous strides have been made in automated control of iron ore plants. This paper reviews state-of- the-art control systems for crushing, grinding, magnetic separation, froth flotation and sizing/classifying circuits. Trends toward computerization and plant automation in response to a dismal outlook for North American steel production are also examined.

"Today it is more important than ever to get the maximum possible return on capital invested in the processing industry. To this end the plant is often operated continuously and the choice of equipment is, consequently, extremely important.Screening spans a wide range of particle sizes and there are many different types of screening elements. The following types are common:1. Cloths and elements of rubber.2. Wire mesh screens with round wires.3. Wire mesh screens with profiled wires.4. Perforated steel plates.5. Elements of plastic.6. Gratings of steel beams.7. Gratings of iron rods.We would like to deal with two of these types namely rubber and briefly on plastics.We first introduced rubber screens to the Canadian Mining Industry in November, 1963. This stemmed from a conversation with the superintendant of one of Canada's largest screening plants containing 48 vibrating screens, with an average wire cloth life of 10 to 12 days. We contacted the manufacturer of rubber screen cloths who had supplied rubber screens to a mine in Northern Sweden for a 50,000 ton per day plant in 1951."

The Florida phosphate industry successfully uses froth flotation to concentrate phosphate in: the particle size range of approximately 28 to 150 mesh. However, as recently as 1965, coarse particles in the range of 14 to 28 mesh generally had not been beneficiated by conventional flotation methods at recoveries high enough to be considered adequate. It has been customary to upgrade this coarse material; by "agglomerate flotation" or "skin flotation" using belts, tables or spirals. While these devices have proved commercially effective, their capacities are much lower than those of froth flotation cells. To determine whether coarse phosphate material could be recovered successfully by froth flotation, Armour Agricultural Chemical Company began a series of pilot and plant tests; in April 1965. Objective of the tests was to compare over-all performance of a froth flotation cell design relatively new to the phosphate industry with results from the belt circuit at the Bartow, Fla., plant.

Iron ore fines is an area of concern in India. A possible avenue is to use these fines for sponge ironmaking. Work has been carried out to pelletize these fines with coal and a suitable binder, and cure them in ambient atmosphere to retain in-situ reductant. Pellets were characterized for physical strength and metallisation. Critical factors were granulometry was percentage of coal & binder. In laboratory tests, pellets got metallized faster compared to lump ore. Large-scale trials were conducted in a 12-meter long rotary kiln plant. For 90% metallization, required residence time was only 60 minutes against 240 minutes for lump ore. Coal requirement also decreased. Investigations established the fast reduction nature of pellets. This is due to reduction-reactions occurring simultaneously at many sited within the composite pellets, in addition to the diffusion of reducing gases from the surface of the pellets to its core. The developed process is a value addition in the conventional pelletmaking and is environment-friendly also.

Recycling of retired cadmium telluride (CdTe) photovoltaic (PV) modules has attracted attention due to new European environmental regulations. Recycling tellurium from CdTe PV modules is becoming more important because of the low availability of this metal. We investigated several treatment paths for reclaiming tellurium from solutions obtained from leaching fragments of CdTe PV modules. Our experiments showed that conventional soda ash neutralization/hydrolysis methods recovered only 50~60% of tellurium. However, by appropriately combining neutralization and sulfide precipitation, almost all the tellurium present in the leaching solution was precipitated and recovered; the concentration of tellurium in the processed solution was reduced from 900-1000 mg/L to less than 1 mg/L, yielding a tellurium recovery greater than 99%. This method can be incorporated in the scheme of recycling spent CdTe PV modules and manufacturing wastes. It may be also an alternative to the current operations for removing tellurium from copper anode slime leaching solutions.

Traditionally, industrial minerals in British Columbia comprise about 10 per cent of the combined value of mineral, coal, petroleum and natural gas production. Over the years a wide variety of industrial minerals have been produced in British Columbia, often with a different level of marketing success. For some products such as building stone, common brick or expanded shale, once strong demand gradually disappeared; for others such as asbestos and barite, new discoveries or new industrial activities created demand and new markets. For yet other minerals such as fluorite, talc and perlite, wider use has been prevented by the small size, poor quality or remote locations of the deposits. Bentonite (1926 to 1944-as a by-product from coal mines) Building stone (intermittently since the mid-1800s) Chromite (1918 and 1929) Over the past years, the list of industrial minerals produced has been expanded to include several new commodities: glassgrade silica sand, magnesite, pumice and silica for ferrosilicon and silicon carbide manufacture.

At Neavesville gold-silver (electrum) mineralisation occurs in steeply-dipping zones of intense fracturing, brecciation and quartz veining within rhyolitic pyroclastics, carbohaceous shales and andesites. Hydrothermal alteration extends over an area of greater than 3 by 1.5 km. In rhyolitic tuffs, highly silicified zones containing quartz-adularia-illite assemblages are flanked by less silicified assemblages composed of albite, illite-montmorillonite and chlorite. The mineralogy and sequence of alteration are comparable with the alteration zones which envelop the steam-producing fissures of the active Wairakei and Broadlands geothermal fields. Primary fluid inclusions in quartz from five fissure veins in the Neavesville field show maximum homogenisation temperatures ranging from 220 - 260¦C and salinities of 0.0 - 1.1 wt per cent NaCl equivalent, which cover a similar range to actual measured temperatures and salinities in geothermal fluids at Wairakei and Broadlands. The age of the rhyolitic pyroclastics and related alteration and mineralisation is probably Pliocene and Neavesville therefore represents a fossil geothermal system. The intensely fractured zones containing the gold-silver mineralisation were probably produced by hydraulic fracturing generated by accumulation under pressure of hydrothermal fluid in blind fault zones. Study of fluid inclusions indicates that hydrothermal quartz associated with electrum was deposited under boiling conditions. High grade electrum mineralisation at Graces workings appears to be localised by reaction of hydrothermal fluid with sedimentary marcasite in black shale.
