The requirements for certification, class of license, available training, types of testing and enforcement practices are discussed. A roof bolting theory and structural model are presented which explain the success of most roof bolting installations as the creation of a competent roof bolt reinforced rock arch within the immediate roof rock overlying an underground opening. Likewise, the failure of some bolted mine roofs can be explained as a failure to create a structually competent rock arch by roof bolting.

Progress has been made in the preparation of thin sheets of brittle gadolinium intermetallic compounds by hot rolling of sheathed billets. This paper proposes a set of new approaches for the optimisation of planning and designs in mines by means of evolutionary algorithms, which include the determination of ore grade, layout of development system, selection of mining methods and production scheduling in underground mines. The applications indicate that evolutionary algorithms are particularly suitable to the complex and complicated problems in mines.

This paper presents the development and application of an approach for clustering fracture orientation data. Data are projected on the surface of the unit upper hemisphere and the clustering approach is applied in three steps: (1) randomness test and identification of dense clusters, (2) estimation of cluster statistics, using Bingham distribution, and (3) rejection of extremal data based on Chauvenet's criterion.

The methodology is based on standard exposure pathway models which are consistent with current regulatory guidance on conducting risk assessment.
