Same-batch and non-blind as well as blind pulp duplicates are often submitted as quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) control samples to a routine laboratory along with routine assays (and other control samples such as reference material samples). The current ways of interpreting the results of duplicate assays to derive QA/QC conclusions and decisions, however, has not yet been formalised in a scientific manner. The current, prevailing approach and its limitations are reviewed and a new method is proposed as a substitute tool. This new tool should allow for operational error detection on a batch per batch basis (ie batch rejection) as well as laboratory performance assessment with time on reproducibility.

Conversion of hydraulic equipment to fire resistant fluids has been hampered by less than satisfactory component performance and in some cases, catastrophic equipment failure. Concern over identifying possible causes to these problems led to a joint research project between the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited and the University of Saskatchewan. This paper summarizes some of the results and conclusions derived from this joint project. In this study, the research was limited to evaluating the effects of potash contamination on the performance of hydraulic equipment. Two separate types of tests were conducted in order to provide a basis upon which trends could be established. This study concluded that the presence of potash dust in the hydraulic fluid can induce severe wear over relatively short periods of time. It was also deduced that a contaminant free fluid combined with proper fluid maintenance could extend the performance of hydraulic components using fire resistant fluids even under very severe operating conditions, such as elevated pressures and temperatures. Recommendations as to how to achieve this goal and the practicality of doing so are presented.

The southeastern phosphate industry is investigated to determine its role in supplying the United States and world phosphate demand. The report shows that the southeastern (Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina) phosphate industry is the leading domestic and world producer of phosphate rock, The report emphasizes size and organization, production capacity, transportation, and marketing of the southeastern phosphate product, Factors affecting the supply- demand relationship of the southeastern phosphate industry and world phosphate production-consumption relationships are analyzed and related to the southeastern phosphate industry. Past trends are projected and the future role of the southeastern phosphate industry is analyzed to determine its ability to supply the United States and rest-of-the-world phosphate requirements in 1985 and 2000. The projections show that southeastern resources are ample to supply domestic and export requirements at the projected rates of consumption well beyond the year 2000.

An investigation of the possibility of improving the grinding characteristics of a gabbro ore containing copper and nickel sulfides via a thermal shock treatment technique has been carried out. The results obtained indicate that the breakage characteristics of the gabbro are particles can be significantly improved by preheating the are particles to a temperature around 400°C followed by rapid water quenching. For a given power input and feed size, the thermally treated material produces a product of much finer distribution than the untreated material. An assessment of the improvement in grindability has been made by calculating feed size selection functions for untreated and heat-treated materials.

A mineral investigation of the Chugach National Forest, Alaska was conducted jointly by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines from 1979 to 1983 as part of the RARE II program. The U. S. Geological Survey remapped the geology and distribution of mineral resources. The Bureau investigated mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences. Previously unreported mineralization in three areas, Long Bay, Wells Bay, and Miners River were discovered in the western portion of the SOUND study area. Copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver, nickel, cobalt, fluorite, and arsenic were found in north-northeast to north-northwest trending shear zones, veins, felsic dikes, and granitic intrusives in Tertiary Orca Group metasedimentary rocks.

As a result of this deviation, 60 kilogram (165 millimetre diameter) and 103 kilogram (302 millimetre diameter) explosive charges are routinely detonated beyond ore/waste contact zones. In order to use effectively the previously reported new sensing system for hydrogen and oxygen potentials in molten copper, the criteria of the potentials for getting sound castings have been determined in the laboratory experiment. The copper melt equilibrated with a given hydrogen and an oxygen potential was rapidly quenched in the crucible. The relations between the holding potentials and the gas porosity in the solidified sample were investigated by measuring the density of the sample and microscopic observations. It was found that the defects of the gas porosity became the maximum at the potentials where the dissolved amount of hydrogen and oxygen was in the mole ratio 2:1. The samples having the density more than 99% of the theoretieal value were obtained in the higher oxygen and lower hydrogen potential region or in the lower oxygen and higher hydrogen potential region. The criteria thus determined were examined by comparing with the measured potentials in the practical casting machine. In tough-pitch copper casting, the problem due to gas porosity was found to be serious when the hydrogen potential increased. In the. oxygen-free copper casting, the evolution of hydrogen was found not avoided. The gas porosity in the casting, however, was found eliminated when the oxygen potential was kept at a low value.

The dissolution kinetics of type 304 stainless steel in the Bi-Sn eutectic alloy have been investigated under the well-defined hydrodynamic conditions produced by the rotating-disc sample geometry. In addition, the mutual solubilities of iron, chromium, nickel, and manganese from 304 stainless steel in the eutectic alloy were determined over the temperature range 450" to 985°C. The convective -diffusion model for mass transport from a rotating disc was used to interpret the experinlental dissolution data. The dissolution process was found to be liquid-diffusion-controlled under specific conditions of temperature and Reynolds number. Liquid penetration into the 304 stainless steel resulted in a reduction of the di,ffusion-controlled mass flux and thus precluded the calculation of the diffusion coeficients of the four components from 304 stainless steel in the Bi-Sn eutectic alloy. The convective-diffusion model for diffusional limitations of electrode reactions and mass transport at the tationssurface of a rotating disc set forth by Levich 1,2 has found wide applicability in the investigation of electrochemical and dissolution phenomena in aqueous systems. Riddiford 3 and Rosner have reviewed the model and also include numerous references on work of this nature. More recently the rotating-disc system has been applied to the investigation of hetereogeneous reactions in liquid-metal systems. Shurygin and Kryuk 5 have measured the dissolution rates of carbon discs in molten Fe-C, Fe-Si, Fe-P, and Fe-Ni alloys. Shurygin and shantarin6 also studied the dissolution kinetics of iron, molybdenum, chromium, and tungsten, and the carbides of chromium and tungsten in Fe-C solutions with a rotating-disc sample geometry. In these systems it was possible to distinguish between diffusion and reaction control mainly through experimental confirmation of the velocity dependence of the dissolution rate predicted by the model. However in the absence of dependable solubility data and the virtual lack of diffusion data in these systems, a quantitative check of the magnitude and the temperature dependence of the rate was not possible. In many instances, estimates of the activation energy for solute diffusion and the diffusion coefficient based upon the experimental dissolution data are not credible. A recent study by this author7 has resulted in a critical test of the model in a liquid-metal system. The solution rates of tantalum discs in liquid tin were measured over a wide range of temperature and velocity conditions. In addition, the solubility and diffusion coefficient of tantalum in liquid tin were determined as a function of temperature. The latter data were used with the model to predict both the magnitude and the temperature dependence of the dissolution flux. In that work it was also deemed necessary to reevaluate the solution to the convective diffusion equation to incorporate the effect of the lower range of Schmidt numbers encountered in liquid-metal systems. Good agreement between the model and the experimental dissolution data in the region of diffusion control was obtained in the Ta-Sn system. The Bi-Sn eutectic alloy is used as a seal between the reactor head and the reactor vessel in the Experimental Breeder Reactor-11. The alloy is fused periodically prior to fuel-handling operations. In that connection, it was necessary to investigate the compatibility of the liquid alloy with the type 304 stainless-steel containment material. The results of a rotating-disc study in this multicomponent system are presented. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The 5.08-cm-diam discs were machined from 0.317-cm-thick plate. Chemical analysis information for the type 304 SS material is given in Table I. The discs were ground flat on metallographic paper and given a final polish on Linde B abrasive. A thin support rod was threaded into the disc and the region around the threads was fused under an inert gas. The support rod was fitted with a quartz protection tube and then was attached to a supporting shaft which passed through a rotary push-pull vacuum seal. The disc and supporting shafts were dynamically balanced prior to insertion into the furnace tube. The apparatus is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The 58 pct Bi-42 pct Sn eutectic alloy melts were prepared from 99.995 pct pure Bi and Sn by fusing the components in a 7-cm-ID Pyrex crucible. The system in which the melts were made was evacuated to a pressure of 1 x 10-6 Torr and back-filled with purified argon several times before melting the charge. The "run of mine" cannot, as in the case of bituminous coal, be sold. Anthracite, being very compact and practically free from volatile combustible matter, burns only at the surface, and it is, therefore, deemed important to have the lumps as nearly of a uniform size as possible, so that between them a large amount of surface will remain exposed to the action of the air without checking the draught too much, or allowing enough air to pass to cool the coal below the ignition-point, In other words, if the pieces of coal of the size of a chestnut and smaller are mixed with lumps of the size of an egg they fill the air-passages and prevent a free draught. The rate of isothermal transformation of austenite to pearlite depends upon the rate of nucleation, N, and the rate of growth, G, of pearlite in austenite. Values of N are given in terms of the number of nuclei forming in unit time per unit grain boundary area of unreacted austenite; values of C are given in terms of the linear rate of radial growth. Variations in the isothermal rate with temperature result from variation of N and G with temperature. Depth of hardening of a steel depends fundamentally upon values of N and G; changes in carbon and alloy content effect changes in N and G and thus affect depth of hardening. Quantitative studies are available on N and G for the formation of pearlite in plain carbon eutectoid steels.3 Systematic studies in this field are necessary if the phenomena are to be well enough known to furnish a proper basis for full rationalization and for theory. Accordingly, the studies are continuing, both with respect to the effect of alloying elements upon the values of N and G in the formation of pearlite and to the values of N and G for the formation of ferrite in hypoeutectoid steels. The present paper is the first relating to the effect of alloying elements upon the values of N and G for pearlite. It offers special interest since cobalt is known to have an anomalous effect upon the rate of formation of pearlite, accelerating it, whereas all other elements retard it.4 It will be shown that cobalt increases both N and G for pearlite and that this effect is inherent in the Fe-Co-C system and not dependent upon factors relating to austenite heterogeneity nor upon any recognizable adventitious factor. Inasmuch as the rate of diffusion of carbon in austenite and the interlamellar spacing of pearlite are variables related to G and possibly to N (in a manner not yet certain), measurements of the effect of cobalt upon them are also reported here. In the course of the work, measurements were made on the effect of cobalt upon the marten-site temperature and these are given. COBALT AS AN ALLOYING ELEMENT IN STEEL Properties of Cobalt Cobalt resembles iron more closely than does any other chemical element. As a result of the studies on recrystallization and crystal growth made in this laboratory, certain theories have been developed. These are expressed briefly in a paper by Dean and Hudson.' One of the principal points brought out in that paper is that in the deformation of a crystal, the energy supplied is distributed to the atoms of the lattice, probably by the forced formation of molecules. It is found that a Maxwellian distribution of the energy among these atoms will account for the grain growth at various temperatures. According to such a distribution the number of atoms with energy above a certain critical value, E, necessary for recrystallization at the absolute temperature T is given by n = Ne-E/kT where N is the total number of atoms. It is apparent that if this line of reasoning is correct, a metal which has been cold-worked and reheated to a temperature below that of complete annealing will have the atoms with the higher energy recrystallized, that is, reduced to normal energy and there will remain only atoms below a certain energy. If this metal is again cold-worked the peak in the number-energy distribution curve will, as compaied with its position after the first cold-working, be displaced toward the regions of lower energies, that is, the temperature of recrystallization will be higher. By a repetition of this process the position of this maximum and hence the recrystallization temperature of the metal could be raised considerably. In order to check this theory, experiments have been made on copper wire. The wire was drawn from 1/4-in. rod to 22 B & S gage and then sample lots were annealed at 400 and 220° C., respectively. The wire annealed at 400° C. gave an elongation of 34 per cent., whereas that annealed at 220° C. gave only 23 per cent. These wires were then drawn by identical practice to 34 B & S gage and the elongation determined after an anneal of 3 min. in an oil bath held at various temperatures. (for an oral presentation) Activities for preparing future deep-sea mining offer the unique opportunity to study environmental conditions and anticipate adverse environmental impacts prior to the commercialization of the activity. Until know, environmental research has first and foremost focused on understanding direct impacts occurring at the seafloor or in the water column such as the removal of substrate, the suspension of sediment or the creation of particle plumes. Impacts occurring above the sea surface have thus far rarely been considered. The operation of deep-sea mining equipment, as well as of mining and transport vessels will be associated with a considerable energy demand. In the open ocean, this energy will be provided by heavy fuel oil (HFO), which is the cheapest and most common marine fuel. The combustion of HFO will be associated with the release of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Deep-sea mining will thus directly add to already critical air pollution levels caused by international shipping. To contribute to a holistic assessment of deep-sea mining impacts and to address the previously outlined knowledge gap, we present the methodology to quantify the fuel consumption and associated emissions of a potential typical commercial manganese nodule mining operation in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (Fig.1). Using the mine set up and energy demand estimates from a study commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy supplemented by information from literature, we anticipate emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (NO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), particulate matter and non-methane volatile organic compounds.

WHEN this Government was founded, the framers of the Constitution wrote into that instrument a provision that Congress should "coin money and fix the value thereof;" and the Constitution prohibits making anything but "gold and silver" lawful money. So silver is written into our basic law. Shortly after President Washington took office in 1789 the Congress passed the first Mint Act, setting up the U. S. Mint. In that Act, signed by President Washington on April 2, 1792, the weight of the American dollar was fixed, and it was provided how much silver should be contained in a silver dollar and how much gold should be contained in a gold dollar. It was decided that 371 1/4 grains of pure silver was to be the standard dollar of America. That standard with respect to the pure silver content of the dollar has never changed.

Mine and facility closure planning is a dynamic and rapidly evolving landscape. In this landscape, mining companies and industry consultants are generally good at estimating the associated earthworks and rehabilitation costs, because it is æcore businessÆ. Through our extensive work in mine closure, we have found that the safe and cost-effective demolition of mining related infrastructure is often grossly underestimated. Or alternately, it is simply assumed that the returns on scrap steel and the sale of re-usable plant will cover the related costs. With fluctuating steel prices and no guaranteed buyer for the assets, the estimated monetary return is often unreliable and in many cases unrealistic. On this basis this logic is fundamentally flawed. We have found that on most occasions this has meant that closure cost estimates fall well short of what the actual costs are to close the mine.GSSE and Liberty Industrial have worked on over 60 mine closure projects in Australia and overseas of varying scales and across a range of commodity types. An evaluation of these projects has shown that costs associated with the safe demolition and removal of a mining related infrastructure is in the order of 20 - 30 per cent of the total cost at closure. We believe it is one of the top three risk areas associated with mine closure planning and cost estimation, alongside bulk earthworks and the capping of tailings and waste rock storage facilities.Our paper uses examples from recent projects to demonstrate all aspects outlined above. We have also endeavoured to address the following key points related to the demolition and removal of mining related infrastructure:If companies fail to plan appropriately, complicating factors such as contamination, hazardous materials, mobilisation/demobilisation, geographical location, decommissioning standards, site constraints and weather, can add considerable costs to the project and result in variations for the demolition contractor.Closure planning often assumes infrastructure that is no longer required can be utilised by a third party and/or the new land holder. We intend to show that unless adequate consultation and planning is undertaken, this is not beneficial to the mining company, the environment, or the local community.CITATION:Fletcher, D, Hutton, A and Dick, C, 2012.
