"The developing world energy crisis and spiraling fuel costs have created a new public awareness and general acceptance of the need for energy conservation.Plants will have different objectives for an energy conservation program but there appears to be a common approach on how to save electrical energy.Data for a 180tph Rod Mill powered by a 750 hp motor will be used to demonstrate the relationship of energy input and production levels and to seek an optimum operating condition.Energy Conservation:Plants that have examined ways of dealing with the energy situations have concluded that energy conservation has important benefits for industry, including reduced costs, fewer production slowdowns inthe event of fuel shortages and a continued competitive position.There have been some ""startling"" conservation achievements attained through such simple plant maintenance and operating practices as reducing unnecessary lighting in buildings and yards, turning off' equipment not needed at night or over week-ends, through planning maintenance and production schedules to minimize energy use and through improving quality control to eliminate waste.Significant reducti.ons in energy use have been achieved by some rather simple but vigorous maintenance and plant engineering efforts directed at finding and fixing energy ""leaks"" rather than technological advances or major rework or redesign of facilities and equipment.An Energy Conservation Program often must overcome such obstacles as historic operating practices and emp1-oyee indifference, i.e. the ris.ing costs of fuel should result in re-examination of so1ne basic attitudes to energy conservation. Some measures, rejected in the past largely on the grounds of capj.tal. expenditure, now make economic sense in the light of future escalating energy costs."

This paper undertakes to assess what opportunities exist for the economical recovery of non-ferrous metals from spent catalysts. The most promising recovery appears to lie with metals such as Co, Mo, Ni, W, heterogeneous catalysts used on a large scale in petroleum processing. Nickel is a metal with diverse applications on a large scale notably in hydrocarbon steam reforming and in vegetable oil hydrogenation. In addition, several of the precious metals, notably Pt, Pd, and Rh, find extensive use in fossil fuel processing and in automotive and power plant flue gas control. The hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical alternatives for processing are identified and discussed, especially with citations to illustrate reduction to commercial practice. Promising directions for adaptation of appropriate, economic separation technologies for recovery of non-ferrous catalytic metals generated in significant amounts for the secondary metal markets are identified. There are three major human resource management activities which, depending on how well they are done, impact on the performance of people and therefore the bottom line. These are: ò recruitment; ò training and development; and ò performance appraisal. Most sizeable organisations would say they are involved in all three, but there are many more that would admit that their human resource management practices are limited to recruitment. If we concentrate on the organisations that currently undertake all three, we have to ask, `Are they using different systems/benchmarks for each activity, or is there congruence between the activities?'. Our experience is that most organisations use different systems/benchmarks. The end result is: ò one set of criteria to recruit staff; ò another to identify their training needs; ò and yet another set of criteria to measure their staff's Performance.

In order to improve vibrations from quarry blasting, a new technique and timing pattern was established and applied to the particular geology. By shooting a single representative borehole one full second ahead of the production blast, a signature waveform can be isolated and analyzed. Multiple productionsignature blasts were performed. Encroaching residences require quarries to adjust their blasting techniques to reduce vibrations and raise frequencies. A signature hole inherently poses problems to quarries. Blasting one single hole from a production bench poses safety issues to wall stability; vibration issues to close neighbors; and budget issues to the quarry operator. Results showed that the new timing pattern reduced vibrations through timing optimization without a loss in quarry production. Therefore, this technique of vibration analysis employing a production-signature hole is successful in creating a timing pattern that meets the quarry’s goals.

The techniques for fire monitoring of conveyor belts in underground coal mines have been revolutionized by the advent of sensitive carbon monoxide sensors and computer monitoring systems. These new systems are rapidly replacing the previous thermal (fixed-point temperature) sensors that have been shown to be considerably less sensitive for early fire warning. CO is generally an excellent indicator of spontaneous combustion. However, the most recent non-flammable conveyor belt materials have been shown to "burn" with dense smoke, but without sufficiently high temperatures to produce much carbon monoxide. To cover this fire detection void, a smoke detector was developed to augment CO sensing for these new conveyor materials. However, computer monitoring provides the flexibility for handling this and other additional instrumentation as fire monitoring techniques evolve. CO, smoke and temperature sensing may eventually be advocated for complete fire monitoring.

When Gas hydrate formation rates have two steps: a nucleation induction step and an agglomeration step. Hydrate induction in distilled water is extremely slow because of lack of nucleating particles. Our laboratory found that synthetic anionic surfactants greatly improve both hydrate induction and agglomeration because the surfactant?s hydrophilic head absorbs water molecules and the hydrophobic tail absorbs hydrocarbon gas molecules, creating necessary nucleation sites. Vast hydrate deposits inhabit seafloors. What is the seafloor hydrate nucleating mechanism? We find that nano-particles of smectite clays (bentonite and nontronite) are hydrate-nucleating sites in sea-water-saturated, packed porous media, especially when trace quantities of anionic biosurfactants adsorb on the clay particles. Microbes and their bioproducts proliferate around seafloor gas hydrate accumulations. The seafloor microbe-mineral-hydrate synergy is explored in this paper. During the cyanide leaching of gold ores containing copper minerals, aurocyanide (Au(CN)f) is produced and typically recovered using activated carbon. However, free cyanide, as well as cyanide associated with cuprous cyanide complexes, are generally not recovered from the barren liquor. This results in a significant economic penalty in high cyanide consumption due to the dissolution of copper. 1\vo different configurations of a novel method for the treatment of barren liquor streams for cop­per recovery and cyanide recycle are described. Recovery of copper and cyanide is affected using solvent extraction (XI 7950). Loaded organic is stripped with a high copper, high caus­tic solution which is electrowon to produce copper metal. Depleted electrolyte is treated with sulfuric acid to recover cyanide which is returned to the leaching circuit. Results of benchscale and mini-pilot plant experiments are presented.

Downtime cannot be tolerated on electric shovels whose cost may approach or exceed $400,000 each. The same may be said for larger-variety off-highway trucks which require an operational expenditure upwards of $50 per hour. One company, for instance, in order to ensure a more continuous operation, has specified centralized lubrication for all of its new equipment. In wet or dry weather, the mining of asbestos can place undue strains on machinery and other equipment. When the mineral is dry, its dusty, loose fibers work their way into crevices, and when wet, the glutinous asbestos may adhere to axles, gears and other wear components. Such conditions are multiplied during the extreme cold winters of eastern Canada. It is more difficult to lubricate and maintain equipment, and erosiveness becomes more punishing to wear parts. Resultant breakdowns rapidly drain off profits.

In this paper several leaching tests were per-formed to optimize the leaching section of a hydrometallurgical process for the recycling of alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries. Zinc and manganese oxides were dissolved by an acidic-reductive leaching using sulphuric acid and oxalic acid as reductant. Leaching tests were developed according to a full factorial design. The operational variables were pulp percentage, sulphuric acid concentration, temperature and oxalic acid concentration. Additional tests were performed to evaluate the precipitation rate of Mn and Zn oxalates. Finally a hydrometallurgical process were proposed for the recycling of alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries, in which Zn and MnO2 are recovered from purified solution by electrowinning: Zn is recovered as metallic compound, while Mn can be recovered as electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD), but recovery of further manganese compounds is possible with simple process changes.

A novel technology for leaching copper from primary copper concentrates has been developed at UBC. This patented technology takes advantage of the galvanic couple between pyrite and chalcopyrite to ensure rapid and complete oxidation of chalcopyrite under mild conditions in acidic iron sulfate solution, without the need for microbes, ultrafine grinding, or chemical additives such as chloride, nitrate, or surfactants. Copper recoveries of 98% or greater can be achieved at 80°C under atmospheric conditions in as little as 4 hours of residence time. The process is selective for chalcopyrite over pyrite, generates near-quantitative levels of elemental sulfur, and is fully compatible with conventional solvent extraction and electrowinning of LME Grade A copper cathodes. In this paper, the fundamentals of the Galvanox ? process are reviewed, and selected results of batch leaching tests on various concentrate samples are presented and discussed.

The paper describes some of the economic and human factors associated with haulroads on Mount Whaleback, a large open pit iron ore mine. These factors have combined to encourage formation of a specialised road maintenance crew which caters for haulroad construction and maintenance. Techniques used for design, construction, operation and management of haulroads are then described. Future developments are expected to effectively lower construction costs leading to an even wider application of the techniques described and consequent improvement in temp- orary roads and overall truck performance. INTRODUCTION Mount Whaleback is a large truck/shovel open pit iron ore mine located in the Pilbara region of north Western Australia. Annual production capacity exceeds 100 million tonnes per annum of waste and ore. The truck haulage fleet comprises WABCO 120 52 WABCO 3200 22 74 of which approximately 45 are operating at one time.

Because the Australian resource industry differs from the resource industries of other countries, direct application of manpower planning processes derived from overseas experience may be singularly inappropriate for Australian projects. Too often in Australia, project manpower planning has been undertaken as an afterthought to technical and financial analysis. A wide variety of complex and interrelated manpower considerations should be evaluated from the beginning of project planning, even at feasibility study stage, and relevant deductions should be incorporated into all other planning. Many manpower factors can be considered sequentially but it is probably necessary to undertake critical path analysis for manpower planning. The paper highlights some key factors involved in project manpower planning and suggests a simple linear planning sequence which integrates the analysis of factors and can in turn be integrated into technical and financial planning.

Accountability for profit realized or lost, and responsibility for continued safe operation are the main impetus behind operator training. Efficiency in operation enables production at lower unit costs. An inefficient operation eats profitability of the operation, creating short term losses, and also affecting longer term viability particularly when commodity prices fluctuate and competition erodes market share. Safe operation and efficient operation are ultimately conjoined entities which may not be able to be sustained without dual effort. Training is a very valuable tool to engage operations in adopting more efficient and safe practices. Training requires time, facilities and trainers. One novel way of minimizing both the trainers and the facilities is through the use of Computer Based systems. Included amongst this are Computer based equipment simulators, following an identical philosophy as flight simulators used for pilot orientation and training for different aircraft types.

Previous mineralogical investigation of all effluent flotation streams of Mimosa mine (Zimbabwe) indicated that appreciable amounts of liberated platinum-group minerals (PGMs) of the Pt-Pd-Bi-Te class are not recovered û despite electrochemical measurements showing interaction between xanthate and such minerals. In this work, the flotation recovery of synthetically prepared Pd-Bi-Te was compared with that of chalcopyrite (a typical fast-floating mineral) and pyrrhotite (a typical slow-floating mineral), with microflotation tests. These indicated Pd-Bi-Te to be a fast-floater with flotation rates exceeding that of chalcopyrite. Predicted flotation rate constants (from the Ralston model) were significantly lower for small particles (with diameters similar to those lost to the effluent streams) compared with those of particle with intermediate sizes. This supports the suggestion that losses to effluent streams are caused by particle size effects.

Issues of deep-seabed mining are discussed since four decades and extensive efforts have been invested in oceanographic studies related to environmentally sound harvesting of polymetallic nodules. Because mining on the deep seafloor seems to range from large-scale, two-dimensional dredging or scooping up of the ore from the uppermost surface sediment layer to more localized drilling or deeper digging into a three-dimensional ore body, it appears to be justified to reconsider some concepts for environmental impact evaluation. Based on the experience gained during preceding years in environmental studies related to polymetallic nodule mining, some interrelated hypotheses and proposals will be presented. It is suggested that these proposals be considered in future plans for environmental impact evaluation and that observations on community re-establishment be conducted before massive sulphide mining or other ore extractions enter the commercial mining phase.

Abstract: Rough set theory (RS) can find useful information from a large number of data and generate decision rules without prior knowledge. Support vector machines (SVM) have good classification performances and good capabilities of fault-tolerance and generalization. To effectively control blasting vibration effect, prediction model of blasting vibration parameters based on rough sets and support vector machines are established. Particle swarm algorithm (PS) is used to dynamically discretize attributes. Then, according to the optimal particle calculated by the PS algorithm, the decision table is established. After eliminating less importance attributes and data, then SVM is trained and established for prediction. The model can deal with both quantitative and qualitative factors such as aperture and cast direction, and analyze their importance to peak vibration acceleration value. The improvement of prediction accuracy is verified by testing data.

Before aluminum is utilized in automotive bodies, the longevity of the electrodes employed in the resistance spot welding of aluminum must increase. This paper explores the affects of electrode composition on electrode life. To compare these variables, electrode tests were completed on a Taylor Wield welding machine using, Cu-Cr, Cu- Zr, Cu-Cr-Zr, Cu-Be, and Glidcop electrodes tested to 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 100%, and 150% lifetimes. Electrode diameters were found via a magnification technique using a PULNIM video camera attached to a low magnification Wild Heerbrugg stereo-zoom microscope. From these measurements, graphs of electrode life verses face diameter and weld number verses face diameter were created. Analyses of these graphs suggest that a single failure mechanism is responsible for electrode failure, though the number of welds until failure (100% electrode life) varied with composition (700-2000 welds).

Maintenance management improvement projects were undertaken at several BHP Collieries Division mines pursuing.the objective of achieving better structured maintenance procedures. Efficiently structured maintenance and optimum asset use are interdependent and productivity and computer models assist towards that objective. Definition of aspects of maintenance and analysis of the nature of equipment and materials, workloads and tasks, lead to more effective planning and scheduling of maintenance. The quality, standards and procedures of records must be suitable and adequate for storage and future retrieval. Total Quality Control initiatives and improvement projects even extend into spheres of customer/supplier relationships and problem solving teams as well as the more recognisable standards of management and performance factors in maintenance. All such factors contribute to a Maintenance Management Matrix to provide a better structured approach to economic maintenance management in the capital intensive coal mining industry.
