A new device was successfully developed in order to overcome the difficulty of drilling longer holes for anchors in soft soil bedrocks or swelling bedrocks, which is one of the major impediments to rapid excavation by NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method). With higher rotation (1200 - 1800 r.p.m.) and lower percussion energy (4 - 6 kg.m), the new drill has following advantages: (1) Applicability covers soils and medium hard rocks with the same drifter. (2) Longer hole (more than 9m) is achievable only with air flushing even in cohesive soils or rocks. (3) Better borehole stability is obtainable even in earth or in fissured rocks.

Falconbridge Limited is developing a major nickel mine at Craig which lies between 600 m, 915 m and 1500 m below surface and is accessed on the 600 m and 1250 m levels of Onaping Mine. To supply adequate ventilation for mine development and initial ore production, two raises, 1200 m long are to be driven in norite and granitic gneiss. Falconbridge has purchased a Robbins 97RL Raise Drill and a string of 330 mm drill pipe to ream these raises in 600 m legs at diameter. The paper describes the introduction of deep hole, large diameter raise boring technology into Falconbridge operations involving contractors and specialists in the technology.

This paper presents a strategy for addressing the hazards of construction of tunnels in ground containing methane. A discussion of the nature of methane includes occurrence underground, and manner of entry into excavations. Means of methane control for underground operations are discussed, including ventilation, monitoring, equipment selection, and personnel training. Principles of ventilation for gas dispersion and removal are addressed. The use of continuous gas monitors, automatic power shutdown systems, and hand-held detectors is discussed. The paper addresses integration of permissible equipment to provide a safe system. Aspects of personnel training are discussed, including maintaining hazard awareness, and evacuation and re-entry procedures.

Risk capital for mining ventures becomes harder to get each year as the costs for exploration, construction and money continue to skyrocket in today's inflationary economy. Because of this and because mining prospects must compete for the same dollar as many other needs of a diversified company, then the success or failure of any new proposal depends on how well its return on investment compares with all other capital requests. Mr. Kruger presents case histories showing what it costs to explore for new mines, how many of these prospects reward their promoters with success and how well some of the more famous mines have paid off.

Coal was produced in this state, by white men, at an earlier date than in any state west of the Mississippi River, and for many years its production was larger than that of any state in that area. The coal immediately adjacent to St. Louis was mined commercially earlier than elsewhere because of a ready market which could be reached by teams. Generally the coal seams are more or less "spotty" in character, and in many places openings made in thick coal could only be mined for a few years. All of the data available from state survey reports, county histories and a few other sources are shown in Table 66.

This paper discusses a Personal Computer (PC) software package that reduces the time required to evaluate a mineral reserve. It provides for: •Entry of borehole data onto PC diskettes and the creation of a borehole database; •Capture of map data using an attached X-Y digitizer; •Calculation of uniform square grids for thickness, mineral qualities, overburden ratio, etc., •Compilation of multiple such grids into a digital model, and iterative evaluation of the model with the user applying constraints and cut-off values; and • Graphic display of grid cells (blocks) showing which cells failed, and on which constraint(s), and a complete reserve report showing tonnages, averages, histograms, and quality arrays.

A pyrometallurgical process for the direct recovery of zinc from zinc concentrates and zinc/iron residues has been proposed and tested extensively by Noranda. The process consists of smelting bone-dry zinc containing materials (sulfide concentrates and secondary zinc/iron materials) in a molten iron oxysulfide bath to volatilize metallic zinc into a SC^-free offgas. Sulfur contained in the feed materials is fixed as an iron oxysulfide matte for disposal. Thus, this process not only is capable of treating zinc sulfide concentrates and secondary zinc materials simultaneously, but also eliminates the need of sulfuric acid production. Detailed thermodynamic analysis and experimental test work are described in this paper.

Fragmentation and muck pile profile together play an important role in optimizing the excavation costs for given geo-mining conditions. Initiation system is one of the vital parameters influencing the fragmentation and muck pile throw (profile). An attempt is made through this paper to study the characteristics of muck pile produced in addition to fragmentation. Two new parameters namely “throwburden ratio” and “muck pile ratio” are proposed for assessing fragmentation and movement of material. Field investigations were carried out in a limestone mine in southern India with shock tube and detonating cord initiation, using four initiation patterns, keeping other parameters like burden, spacing,delay timing etc. same.

Mexico's total oil production in 1943 amounted to 35,149,843 bbl. and in 1944 to 38,196,818 bbl., both being substantially larger than in 1942, when production was only 34,71j1547 bbl. DURING recent years thermal drying of fine coal has increased at a tremendous rate, but very little discussion of the several excellent units has found its way into print. This is particularly true for operating and maintenance costs, and the operator who is faced with his first fine coal drying installation must depend chiefly on hearsay when trying to determine what his drying costs will be. This article presents the maintenance and operating costs for the seven drying units now installed in preparation plants of Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. and lists other cost information that should be obtained before any particular drying unit is selected.

Robert Campbell Gemmell, assistant managing director of the Jackling allied porphyry mining properties in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada, died suddenly on Oct. 25, of heart trouble, while traveling from Hurley, N. M., to Los Angeles. To shape justly even an outline of the brilliant career and uniquely charming personality of Mr; Gemmell is well-nigh impossible, and any effort so to do can but demonstrate the inadequacy of language to sound the depths of soul-stirring sentiments. To touch upon his more important work, and afford even a limited conception of his general worth and character, is all I can hope to do.

Many aerodynamic and thermodynamic properties (such as temperature, pressure, velocity and density) vary widely, and in random spatial and temporal manner for a given underground mine environment. Such variabilities are seldom evaluated statistically, even though the relevant theories and principles are both available and feasible. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the methodology for applying aerostatistics to the analysis of multiple fan systems in mine aerology/ventilation. Pertinent data were obtained from a small multi-level European coal mine. Results confirmed that aerostatistical methodologies are computationally more efficient. Being grounded in solid engineering statistical theories, they can be used to analyze networked parameters in mine environmental engineering.

SEVERAL investigators have recently contributed to a clarification of the controversy concerning the allotropy of chromium. Ross and Hume-Rothery1 and Vasyutinskii et a1.2 have reported high-temperature X-ray data on unalloyed chromium from which they have concluded that no allotropic transformation occurs in this metal. Bechtoldt and vacher3 in their investigation of the Cr-Ni alloy system found no evidence for a transformation in chromium and Smart and Haynes4 in critically analyzing the data presented to date concerning this system could find no evidence for a eutectoid reaction in this system. Metal ions associated with effluent streams pose an increasing environmental problem for the mineral industry. Various techniques currently in use to combat this problem including bioremediation, chemical precipitation, and ion exchange are reviewed, and their relative advantages and disadvantages discussed. An alternative technique for metal ion removal, adsorption on surface modified alumina substrates is presented. Alumina surfaces were modified by adsorption of organofunctional silanes, and metal ion removal occurs by chelation of the ion by the adsorbed silane molecules. Experimental data is presented for the removal of cupric ions by this method and is compared to cupric ion removal by adsorption on alumina without prior surface modification.

The author describes three case histories of fracture-control blasting demonstrations. This is a technique in which the walls of blast holes are scribed or notched in order to enhance the development of blast_induced fractures, and to control their direction. One demonstration was that of a tunneling application in a rock that was generally competent but strongly foliated, hence strongly anisotropic. P second test was conducted for perimeter blasting of a structural excavation in a massively jointed limestone. A third field test was conducted for tunneling through an old concrete structure. Increased applications are envisioned with new tool modifications being developed at the University of Maryland.
