Why is it so difficult? Why are there differences throughout the resources industry in how reconciliation factors are reported and calculated? Why is there no standard formula to use? These are common questions asked when mining companies try to compare reconciliation results across operations or attempt to undertake internal or corporate governance reporting processes. For many mining companies the calculation of reconciliation factors is often a very time and resource intensive part of mandatory reconciliation reporting. Some major mining companies, that move millions of tonnes of material per annum, dedicate full time resources to the calculation of reconciliation factors. The willingness of these companies to set aside resources demonstrates the value that operations place on good reconciliation reporting. Reconciliation is about measuring the variance between two like measures at different points along the mining sequence. It can be undertaken between predictive models, forecast plans and actual measured performance. Calculations are used to derive a variance between two sections within the mining sequence, with the result being commonly known in the resources industry as a æfactorÆ. Mining companies use the calculation of reconciliation factors as key performance indices (KPIs) to provide a æhealth checkÆ of their operation, with variances often pointing to issues either with the accuracy of the original estimate or the quality of the measurement being used in the comparison. There are many reconciliation factors that can be calculated and reported. This paper will set out, clarify and provide a recommended standard means of calculating each specific factor that, where adopted by a company, will ensure compliance with the international reporting codes, such as JORC. Using case studies from Rio Tinto Group (Rio Tinto) and BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (æBMAÆ), and the authors experience across a wide range of mine sites, the outline of a generic solution for tracking a parcel of material from the pit through to the port along with appropriate reconciliation factors is provided. The intention of proposing standardised reconciliation factor terminology and methodology is to provide the foundations of a system to enable communication and comparison across different commodities, companies and mines sites.

INTRODUCTION The stabilization of slopes is not a design problem. A slope is designed before it is made. For a slope to be stabilized it must already exist. The basic problem has existed for a long time. It started with cuts in soil and rock made in the 18th century during the construction of the canals which were developed at that time, and continued into the 19th century with the development of the railways, and in the 20th century with motor roads and lately open pit mining. It is not difficult to stabilize a slope, but certain questions must be asked and answered. These are: i) How much stability is required? ii) For how long is it required? iii) How important is the cost? These three questions indicate the basic problem of Civil Engineering, which is that the solution to any problem is a compromise between safety, cost and time. Stabilization of slopes is no exception. If the slope exists why is stabilization a problem? There are many possible reasons, for instance, a neighbouring and similar slope may have failed, or it may be necessary to change the conditions of the slope, steepen it, increase its height, put weight at the top, or construct a building at the foot in which case added security is required, or guarantee its stability for a longer time. MECHANISM OF FAILURE In order to pick the correct method of stabilization the mechanism of failure must be understood and the immediate cause of failure known. Often to remove the cause is the best remedy. The mechanism of failure has been studied over a period of many years in landslide problems. Pit slope failures are very similar to some types of landslides. (1) (2) (3) (4) In one sense there are many causes of landslides. Terzaghi lists 19. This means that there cannot be a standard solution to a stabilization problem. In another sense, it can be said that there is only one cause, which is gravity. Avalanches are commonly mitigated through the use of explosives at ski resorts and above transportation corridors. Surprisingly, very little research has been conducted on snowpack response to explosive inputs, and efforts to model this response have been limited. The purpose of this ongoing research project is to ascertain an understanding of the dynamic snowpack response in relation to explosive size and height above the snowpack, coupled with snow conditions, to enhance avalanche control. A system of sensors and computer-controlled data acquisition components has been created to record the movement of snow resulting from the charge detonation. The system records acceleration vertically and radially within the snowpack at two distances from the point of detonation as well as blast air pressure at one location during explosive events. The data at two locations allows inferences to be made about the transmittance and attenuation of shock waves through the snowpack radially as well as vertically. The data shows that raising charges above the surface results in increased snowpack dynamic response when compared to surface detonations. Applying power function regression to accelerations for individual charge elevations, it was determined that both radial and vertical rates of attenuation were not dependant on charge elevation. Additionally, raising the charge also resulted in increased dynamic response at depth within the snowpack

The object of all classification is to group together things which are alike, and separate those which are unlike. This object is essentially a practical one, enabling us to apply past experience to new conditions. Many costly large-scale experiments lose half their importance for want of proper description of the coal used, and the consequent impossibility of predicting that other coals will behave in the same way. I do not, therefore, make a fundamental distinction between "scientific'' and "use" classifications, except in so far as use depends on conditions, such as size or impurities which are not related to the nature of the coal substance itself. The characters chosen to define the classes of coal must be such as are accompanied by as many other properties as possible. It is not to be expected that any system of classification will enable us to predict every property of coal, since all specimens have an individuality of their own. But specimens can be grouped by a number of resemblances into species. Further, species which resemble each other can be grouped into genera. Elementary Composition as a Basis of Classification There can be little doubt that the ultimate or elementary composition of "pure coal" is the best basis of classification. It was soon after the perfection of the method of elementary analysis of organic substances by Liebig that Regnault, the distinguished chemist and physicist, laid down the principle that coals of the same kind vary only between narrow limits of elementary composition. This is still the widest generalization that can be made about coal. Upon it the metallurgist Gruner based his classification. In some quarters the value of the ultimate composition was denied, Stein going so far as to say that it teaches us nothing of importance about coal. One still hears statements that it is like crushing a work of art in a mortar and analyzing the powder, or like counting the number of times a given letter occurs in a sentence. Such comparisons are misleading, and the criticism might be applied to organic chemistry as a whole. Nor is the existence of isomerism, or of entirely different substances which

Even where power is of secondary importance, cost items dependent on mill capacity are influenced by the efficiency with which the mill uses power. Tube mills typify the grinding mills most generally used in cement plants, though other types are in use. Tube mills have been widely criticized as being extremely inefficient, and this feeling regarding them has led to many attempts to design more efficient grinding equipment. Other types may be an improvement over tube mills, but the improvement has certainly not been revolutionary, at least as applied to clinker grinding. The very fact that there is doubt regarding the relative efficacy of various types of mills is an indication that an adequate basis for an analysis of performance is lacking. The development of methods of analyzing mill performance has been hampered by the lack of a suitable method for measuring the work actu-ally done in pulverizing. There has been no acceptable standard to which mill performance might be compared. As a consequence, it was not known whether the margin of possible improvement in pulverizing operations was large or small. Even direct comparison of different types of mills was seldom possible because most plants had only one type of mill for each type of service. Comparisons between plants were difficult because of differences in the grinding characteristics of various clinkers. Some recent developments complete a chain of circumstances that place the cement, industry in a particularly fortunate position for the study of its clinker-pulverizing operations. Modern investigators of grinding phenomena have generally agreed that the best measure of mill performance is the production of new surface. For most materials this measure of performance is largely theoretical and has a rather remote connection with the practical aims of the grinding operation. In clinker grinding, on the other hand, surface area is intimately connected with the properties conferred on the cement by grinding. In order to maximize the extraction of high grade pillars at The Doe Run Company, artificial pillars are created using cemented rock fill (CRF). CRF pillars aid extraction of pillars in two ways. One is to offer back support for the immediate area where pillars are being extracted. The second is to increase the post failure residual strength of pillars surrounded by backfill. The CRF is produced using a combination of minus 1.0 m run of mine (ROM) rock and minus 5 cm crushed rock. Depending on the operation the CRF slurry is either produced in an underground or a surface batch plant. The slurry and rock are transported to the fill area by truck where they are mixed and placed in 1 m lifts. To reduce the amount of CRF needed, fill fences are constructed around the perimeter of the CRF pillar. Within these fences ROM CRF is placed in lifts until within 0.6 m of the back after which minus five centimeter CRF is slung tight to the back utilizing slinger trucks. In constructing these artificial pillars a number of set procedures have been established to ensure that the work is done both properly and safely.

The Pacheco Pumping Plant is situated on the west end of San Luis Reservoir in western Merced County, California. It is designed to draw water from the reservoir and pump it into a 3,500,000 gallon regulating tank. The water then flows entirely by gravity to the Coyote Pump Station in Morgan Hill, a distance of 40 miles, where it is pumped into Anderson Reservoir. This water is used to recharge the depleted groundwater table in the Santa Clara Valley. Eventually, some of the water will be diverted to Hollister in San Benito County and to Watsonville and Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz County. The owner is the United States Bureau of Reclamation. The underground work consisted of a fifteen foot finished diameter surge shaft 250 feet deep to the crown of the pump chamber; a twenty foot finished diameter pump chamber which declined from the shaft at 14.2% for ninety feet and then ran horizontally for 180 feet; and twelve each five foot diameter steel lined intake shafts 240 feet deep which intersect the pump chamber in the horizontal section. (Figure 1) Upon completion of the pump chamber, the contractor had to dewater the existing tunnel under the reservoir, excavate the remaining fifteen foot plug, and concrete the transition. The low bidder for this contract was Underground - Continental-Heller at 414,456,000. Excavation of the open cut for the pumping plant and surge shaft began on April 14, 1983. This was performed using a Koehring 1066D backhoe, dozer, trucks, and two Cat 631 scrapers. The excavation was started at the surge shaft so that the grouting could begin

Vesta No. 4 and 5 mines supply most of the high volatile coal required for Jones & Laughlin's by-product coke plants. Until 1944 all coal produced in these mines was loaded by hand. Pressure to mechanize at Vesta was brought on by the manpower shortage in World War II, and in 1943 a decision was made to change to mechanical loading. It was the opinion of those concerned that by use of selective mining the coal would be clean enough to be processed by the existing preparation plants. At that time coal cleaning at Jones & Laughlin consisted of hand picking the larger sizes at the mine tipples and wet washing at plants located at the Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works. A typical section of the Pittsburgh seam as it occurs at Vesta is shown in Fig. 1. The 14 to 16 in. of drawslate immediately over the coal is too soft to be used for roof and must be taken down, leaving the rooster coal just above for roof. In selective mining an attempt is made to mine the coal under the drawslate first and then load out the drawslate separately as refuse. In full seam mining slate and coal are shot down at the same time and loaded out.

A conveyor belt fire presents a serious safety hazard in an underground coal mine. A review of underground coal mine fires involving conveyor belts which occurred within the past two decades was made by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Belt fires that occurred during this period of time have burned as much as 610 m of belting before the fire was extinguished. In an effort to improve safety, MSHA has undertaken a program to study the flammability of conveyor belts in large and small-scale tests. Large-scale tests were conducted on various types of mine conveyor belts using a range of airflows from 0 to 6.1 m/s. Data were obtained to evaluate the effect of airflow on flame spread and other combustion properties of the conveyor belts. The results from the large-scale tests were utilized to develop a new MSHA laboratory-scale test for evaluating the flame resistance of conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. Agreement of results based on a pass/fail criterion was obtained between the large-scale test and new laboratory-scale test. A summary of test results from the new test is shown for different conveyor belt formulations. MSHA also performed a series of fire tests with wood samples using the new laboratory-scale tunnel apparatus. These tests were conducted at airflows from 0.5 to 5.1 m/s to determine the effect on flame spread and burn damage. The data were also analyzed to determine if wood could be used as a calibration standard. The results indicate the flame spread behavior of the wood follows trends similar to results obtained with conveyor belts. The data did not show the precision needed to use wood as a calibration standard. MSHA intends through rulemaking procedures to replace the "20g" conveyor belt acceptance test with the new laboratory-scale test. MSHA also plans to implement a voluntary acceptance program. Under this program, a. conveyor belt manufacturer could obtain an MSHA acceptance for belts meeting the new test criterion. A belt accepted under the voluntary program could then be used underground. Use of conveyor belts meeting the new test would limit the propagation of fire and reduce the probability of igniting other combustibles in the belt entry.

The presence of reactive metal sulfide minerals in waste rock contributes to the hazard of spontaneous combustion in dumps, as these minerals react with air and water entering the dump at ambient temperatures to form various mineral products and significant heat. This reaction series can also be an initiator of self-heating of carbonaceous material present in the waste rocks if sufficiently high temperatures are reached. Characterisation of these reactive minerals has primarily been to assess the risk of acid mine drainage, which is not necessarily an indicator of spontaneous combustion risk. No systematic testing procedure has been adopted by industry to assess the spontaneous combustion propensity of the waste rock. As a consequence, the principal management strategy for spontaneous combustion has been a reactive approach of dealing with events as they arise.Recent advances in adiabatic oven-testing have enabled more definitive assessment of the spontaneous combustion propensity of coals, including the quantification of the accelerating influence of reactive pyrite (Beamish and Beamish, 2011, 2012; Beamish, Lin and Beamish, 2012). This same test procedure has been used to assess the self-heating performance of metal concentrates and is therefore amenable to assessing the metal sulfide oxidation process from low ambient temperatures. The data obtained from such testing can be used to quantify the more prone waste rock sequences of a mineral deposit in advance of mining. This enables appropriate management planning for emplacement and long-term storage of waste rock in dumps.CITATION:Beamish, B and Theiler, J, 2016. Discussion of the paper of L. A. DELANO, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 129, September, 1917, pp. 1267 to 1286. L. A. DELANO.-Since this paper was written, our daily mill tonnage has increased, from 2100 tons to 2700 tons a clay. We now use 11,000 lb. of chrome-steel balls of 2 ½ -in. maximum diameter, for an average crushing capacity of 275 tons per 24 hr., this giving a much higher crushing efficiency. I wish to call attention to two typographical errors in my paper as published. On page 1271, Table 1, the screen analysis of ore at the Bonne Terre mill should be stated in inches instead of mesh. - On page 1272, "the rolls average 185 tons per 24 hr., and have shown by test that 250 tons per hour can be maintained" should, of course, read "250 tons per 24 hours." THE CHAIRMAN (0. M. BILHARZ, Miami, Okla.).-Is the increased mill capacity due to improvement in the re-crushing of middlings or to keeping middlings out of circulation and treating them separately? L. A. DELANO.-AS was shown in Mr. Rabling's paper (Bulletin No. 128, p. 1161) the tonnage was raised by about 400 tons by simply changing the arrangement of screen openings in the jig bed and using punched plate instead of woven-wire screen. Then, by adding a ball-mill, we are taking from the jigs a much larger tonnage of middlings than before or as much as the ball-mill will crush. By sending the ball-mill product to tables and flotation, the jig capacity for original ore is increased. CHAIRMAN BILHARZ.-In your opinion, the satisfactory operation of a Hancock jig on a given ore requires adjustment of the length of the different screens and careful selection of screen openings? L. A. DELANO.-I think it does. In order to decide what screen openings to use on the jigs, we did a great deal of experimental work, making screen analyses of the various hutch products, and then hand-sorting the galena, middlings and chat from each size screen to determine the percentage of galena in each. Then adjusting our jig screens, we gradually worked the process up to a very efficient basis. A DEPOSIT of hematite occurs on Black island, lake Winnipeg, at a point known locally as Red Rock, on the south shore of the island directly across from Clements point. The mail boat from the Canadian Pacific Railway terminus at Riverton, crossing the lake to Manigotogan twice weekly, passes near Red Rock and provides a convenient means of transportation to this part of Black island (Figure 1). HISTORICAL The occurrence of hematite on Black island has been known for a long time. Dowling's report of 1898 states(1): "An iron-ore deposit on the south side has been known' for many years, and on Jeffrey's map of 1762, showing Canada and northern part of Louisiana, Iron island is shown a short distance south of the narrows, evidently the same as the Black island of today".

Computational models are very useful for studying many of the physical mechanisms which can cause sample bias. Within such models we can predict the trajectories of all individual particles and thereby make observations which are not possible for physical systems. Physical mechanisms highlighted include congestion at the cutter aperture, particles bouncing over the cutter aperture, air drag on fine particles, waves of material being bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters, and particles being thrown by the leading edges of cross-belt cutter blades. Having identified relevant physical mechanisms for an existing cutter, we can estimate the extent to which they are likely to result in unequal representation of portions of a stream of material and thereby estimate the maximum likely sample bias.

The discovery of economic uranium miner alisation in unique geological conditions at Yeelirrie, 700 km NNE of Perth, presented Western Mining Corporation Limited with a num- ber of sampling and evaluation problems. Carn- otite mineralisation occurred in a porous cal- crete-clay lithology in close proximity to the water table; background information on such a deposit was non-existent and sampling in these conditions could be difficult. The deposit was sampled initially by aug- er drilling with X-ray fluorescence analysis of drill cuttings, followed by reverse circulation and diamond drilling with analyses by X-ray fluorescence and gamma logging of the holes. Two costeans provided lithological and grade distribution data and mining experience in the deposit. Spoil from the costeans was stockpiled according to location in the first costean and according to location and grade in the second costean. Samples from the various stockpiles were analysed by X-ray fluorescence. No. 1 costean was extensively sampled by channel sampling of the walls and by pit sampling of the floor of the benches of the costean by back hoe. No. 2 costean was sampled by Geiger counters mounted in T-probes and by the gamma logging of auger holes to establish the valid- ity of the T-probe results. Samples were taken

This paper presents talc milling guided by a theme of "So You Want to Be In The Talc Business". Such a theme strikes a cautionary note to warn the uninitiated of potential pitfalls, and this paper will cover briefly some of the technical traps as well as one of the larger talc milling operations. It is important to our purpose to pre- sent some of the market and mineral complications that make the business of producing and selling industrial talcs much more intricate than an outsider would perceive. Metal markets by comparison are great worldwide pools into which production streams of generally identical metals can flow over a weir of market prices. Industrial talc markets are not as well defined and often must be developed by the producer working closely with a specific customer or groups of customers to prove out the attributes of the specific product from a new property. All the negatives of a new market seem to work against the introductory talc in the forms of industry or customer reluctance to change, sales prices, cost of delivery, mode of transportation, health considerations of the minerals and many more. Just locating the potential customers for a new industrial talc may be a substantial undertaking. Thus, an analogy of the worldwide metal market might compare starting a new talc operation to trying to gather up enough fallen rain drops to be able to start a production stream of a worthwhile size.

Virtually all fluorine consumed by the aluminum industry is as the electrolyte of the Hall-Heroult process for producing primary aluminum. A small amount of fluorspar is used but most fluorine is consumed as either aluminum fluoride or cryolite. Some fluorine- containing materials are used in secondary aluminum production, but the amount is negligible compared with primary production requirements. Any analysis of the future of the primary aluminum industry must take into account two powerful and closely related driving forces which are shaping that future. These factors are increasingly stringent restrictions on the emission of pollutants and the continuing cost-price squeeze. Nowhere do these factors combine more forcefully than in the area of fluorine consumption. We can safely assume that industry efforts to reduce fluorine consumption will be intensified and that these efforts will be fruitful. This paper will attempt to identify and quantify the factors and trends of fluorine consumption during the next decade. We will be concerned primarily with the demand for new fluorine. Sources of new fluorine will not be treated.

ALTHOUGH the development of the various flotation processes during the last 8 years has been so revolutionary, this development has been, until recently, entirely confined to the separation of the gangue from the mixed metalliferous sulphides.The desirability of finding some method of separating the independent sulphides from such a miXture, by means of flotation, has long been recognized. ThIS need was emphasized when the slimes resulting from the grinding of Broken Hill sulphide ores were for the first time successfully dealt with by the Mineral Separation Company's process on the Central mine. This process proved the practicability of separating the sulphides of lead and zinc as a mixed concentrate from the gangue present in slime. Although this was a very notable achievement, the process has not been generally used, owing to the mixed lead and zinc concentrates resulting from the treatment being acceptable neither to the zinc nor the lead smelters.Although the introduction of eucalyptus oil in minute quantities as an emulsifying agent has simplified the work of the subsequent tabling of mixed sulphide concentrates, rendering unnecessary the burning off or removal of the oil, there will always be a considerable quantity of slimy product too fine to settle on the moving surface of the concentrating machines, and therefore requiring other means for its division into lead and zinc concentrates.

AS is well known, there are large and valuable deposits of coal in British Columbia, both on the mainland and on Vancouver island. These deposits are widely distributed over the Province. The chief sources of supply on the mainland are found in the Fernie and Princeton-Nicola districts and on Vancouver island in the Comox and Nanaimo districts. The coals range from a very high quality bituminous coal to lignite. On the Upper Skeena river there is said to be a very large deposit of anthracite or semi-anthracite, but this field has not been developed. Coal was first discovered in British Columbia on the north end of Vancouver island in the year 1835, but it was not until 1852 that coal mining was seriously undertaken by the Hudson's Bay Company at Nanaimo, where mining has been carried on continuously ever since that date. The production of coal in the Province continued to increase until the year 1910, when the annual output reached its peak at 3,100,000 tons and a total of 7,800 men were employed in the industry. Since 1910, the production has dropped steadily until, in 1934, only 1,347,000 tons of coal were produced and less than 3,000 men were employed. This continued decrease in production has in no way been caused by lack of coal reserves. It has been due entirely to curtailment of markets. I do not propose to discuss coal mining practice in British Columbia, where we have all sorts of mining conditions, including submarine mining. There is no lack of coal supplies for either industrial or domestic purposes, nor is there likely to be any shortage of coal in the Province for many generations. We have our mining troubles, which increase the cost of production, but there are no insuperable difficulties to prevent the extraction of a large and increasing supply of coal. Our main difficulty-in fact our only serious difficulty-is to find a market for our output, and we must consider means which can be evolved not only to conserve our existing markets but also to expand them, at any rate within the boundaries of Canada. I will therefore confine my remarks chiefly to the all-important factor of Markets for our coal.

The goal of this work is to analyses the copper metallurgical processes including pyro-metallurgy and hydrometallurgy based on the life cycle assessment method implemented in GaBi software. The evaluation indicators such as global warming potential (GWP), acidification potential (AP), photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP) and human toxic potential (HTP) are taken into account. The results show that the major environmental impact phase in pyro-metallurgy derives from beneficiation because of the largest material and energy consumption. It is also shown that copper hydrometallurgy has significantly lower environmental impact than pyro-metallurgy. Based on the evaluation results, some corresponding optimization methods are recommended to reduce environmental impact.IntroductionCopper is an important metal in modem society due to its wide variety of uses, including electrical wiring, heat exchangers, piping and roof construction and increasingly consumer electronics. Demand for copper has increased dramatically over the past decades, driving production rates almost exponentially. Annual production of copper was estimated to be 20 million tonnes in 2012 with Chinese production at about 6.06 million ton in 2012P1. The production process of copper has environment impacts that often go unnoticed by the producer. Higher production, coupled with declining ore grades, is placing increasing pressure on the natural environment.Sound environmental management helps producers improve their manufacturing technique. LCA is a well-established tool for assessing environmental impact potential and can be readily adapted to map impact potential over time, which can be used to quantify the environment impacts of a product or a process [21. This is achieved by creating an inventory of all the energy and material flows used in the process's life cycle. The results of an LCA can be used to improve the operation of a process so that they have less impact on the environment."
