EUGENE COSTE, ? Calgary, Alta.-Evidently in Argentine they have a petroliferous province just east of the Andes where very much the same conditions exist as are found on the east side of the Rocky Mountains and in the plains adjacent. It strikes me, though, that the same mistake is being made in Argentine in the exploration for oil as was made in Alberta, Canada; viz., drilling the wells too .near the seepages in the belt in the eastern part of the petroliferous province, too near the mountains. This same mistake was made in Alberta, with disastrous results; viz., only fissure production was found. The strata so near the mountains are tilted at a very strong angle, such as is described in this paper, and the dislocations are intense. On the other hand, we have found that when we get 100 or 200 mi. away from the mountains we get into oil and gas belts which are very prolific. So far our fields in Alberta have been gas, but in Wyoming, as you know, they get many thousands of barrels a day. I have no doubt that conditions in Argentine are exactly similar but that they have so far kept too near the mountains and that they want to explore the belts farther east to obtain better results.

INTRODUCTION In each given set of operational criteria for tunnel design, ground conditions dictate the selection of the most appropriate construction method and tunnel lining. The designer has the responsibility to choose or restrict the choice of the tunnel lining to insure that the final solution provides a cost-effective permanent construction which will require the minimum of maintenance and endure to the benefit of future generations. This Paper deals with some of the aspects of precast concrete tunnel linings, their history and development through the years. It does not purport to be a comprehensive review of all that has ever been tried or developed but, hopefully, a starting point to encourage discussion and development for the future. BOLTED LINERS As a result of anticipating a shortage of cast iron tunnel lining in 1936 when work was proceeding on London Transport's Central Line Metro, a design for the precast reinforced concrete bolted lining was born. The design took the form of the traditional cast-iron lining but with substantial concrete stiffeners to take the shield ram forces. This new lining was used to construct some 14,000 feet of running tunnel using a ring width of 1'8" which was the standard cast-iron width of the time. (Groves, G.L., 1943)

For elevated temperature-constant load creep tests of a solid solution alloys, the creep strain is a function of a temperature-compensated time parameter 0 = je H/RT dt. The activation energy H is equal to o constant of about 36,000 cal per mol. The substructures resulting from a given creep stress condition are functions of the creep strain independent of temperature. Each new creep stress gives a new unique set of grain substructures; this is one of the factors responsible for the failure of the mechanical equation of state for creep. IN this report an attempt is made to correlate the creep properties of dilute a: solid solutions in aluminum with the subgrain structures that are developed during creep. The possibilities of such correlations have already been suggested by Wood et al. and others1-" who demonstrated that the subgrain structures are functions of the creep stress, creep strain, rate of creep, and temperature. Investigations by Sherby and Dorn' have shown that the creep strain, E, at constant load for dilute a solid solutions of aluminum is given by the functional relationship: e = f(8,u,) [1] where: 0 equals te-AH/RT = temperature-compensated time; t, time; AH, activation energy, - 35,800 cal per mol; R, gas constant; T, absolute temperature, above 400°K; and u,, initial creep stress. Consequently, it was anticipated that the subgrain structure that develops during a constant load creep test should also correlate with any two of the three significant variables C, 8, and Another possible correlation between the subgrain structure and the creep variables is obtained by differentiating Eq. 1 with respect to time, whence the creep rate, 2, becomes: = (2L) (2) =f (, u,) e-AHRT [2] or: e = F (c e H/RT, 0) [3] For the minimum creep rate, ;,, 8 is solely a function of U, as revealed by Eq. 1. Consequently, at the minimum creep rate Eq. 3 reduces to: = F (eAH/RT) [41 Correlations between U, and i, eAH/RT were found valid for solid solution alloys of aluminum where AH was a constant of about 35,800 cal per mol. The parameter ;, eH/RT is identical to the Zener-Hollo-mon parameter8," used by them in evaluating the tensile properties of copper and other metals. Eq. 4 suggests that the subgrain structure developed during secondary creep might be correlatable with either of the two variables 2, e H/RT or u,. Some of the solid solution aluminum alloys which were discussed in an earlier report' were also used in the present investigation. Sheets of these alloys were homogenized, cold rolled from 0.100 to 0.070 in. in thickness and then recrystallized to about the same grain size. Their chemical composition and grain size are recorded in Table I. Creep specimens were selected with their tensile axes in the rolling direction. The details for creep testing have been described10 and will not be repeated here. All creep tests were performed under constant load conditions. Experimental Results and Discussion Metallographic Structure of Creep Specimens: In order to obtain a preliminary concept of creep on the metallographic structure of high purity aluminum, the various ruptured specimens previously used to obtain the creep data for pure aluminum were polished and etched electrolytically in a dilute solution of fluoroboric acid. Oblique illumination was used to reveal the substructures which, for convenience, are shown in correlation with the vs. ;, eH/RT curve in Fig. 1. It is necessary to emphasize that the data for the curve refer to the various secondary stages of creep whereas the micrographs refer to the fractured creep specimens. Nevertheless a regular and systematic correlation is observed between E, eAH/RT (or the creep stress) and the micro-structure at fracture. For In (e, eAH/RT) = 42.3, which refers to creep at a high creep rate and a low creep temperature, the fractured aluminum specimen, as shown by the micrograph in the upper right-hand corner of Fig. 1, exhibited extensive deforma-

The hardness dependence on grain size for polycrys-talline cartridge brass and a leaded brass has been measured by Brine11 and Rockwell B testing. In each case, the hardness, H, depends on the average grain diameter, 1, according to: H =Ho + kHl-1/2 where Ho and kH are experimental constants. Diamond pyramid hardness values have also been measured as a function of the indentation size and grain size to give additional information on the nature of the hardness test and the dependence of hardness on micro-structure. The hardness of polycrystalline brass depends on its grain size. Bassett and Davis' demonstrated this as early as 1919 by making Brinell hardness measurements on cartridge brass. Since then, the hardness of this type of material has been measured as a function of grain size by making Rockwell,2'3 Vickers,4 and Brinell5 tests. he hardness dependence on grain size has also been measured for other materials. Angus and summers6 investigated the grain size dependence of the Brinell hardness of polycrystalline copper and a Cu-4.5 pct Sn bronze. In other studies, nickel,? Armco iron,Big an Fe-0.07 pct C alloy,I0 and an 0.39 pct C-12.45 pct Cr stainless steel" have been investigated. In some of the preceding cases, the hardness results have been analyzed to show that the hardness varies with the average grain diameter, 1, according to an l-l\4, l-1/4 or I-2 dependence,11-13 The studies of the influence of grain size on hardness have not been based on any theoretical model. This may be because the hardness of a material is itself a complicated property. However, attempts have been made to correlate, experimentally and theoretically, the hardness of a material with its unidirectional stress-strain behavior.14-l6 On this basis, Hall" proposed that the polycrystal hardness dependence on grain size might follow directly from the Hall-Petch18,19 relation for the grain size dependence of the yield stress. Thus, the hardness-grain size relation was given as: H = Ho + kHl-1/2 [1] where Ho and kH were taken as experimental constants. The relation was applied to the measurements on brass,' copper,6 bronze,= and Armco iron.' More recently, this relation was shown by Armstrong and jindal20 to adequately describe the measurements on cartridge brass made by Bassett and Davis' and Babyak and Rhines.5 In this case, the relationship was taken a step further by independently relating the values of Ho and kH to the values of oyand ky, previously reported by Armstrong, Codd, Douthwaite, and petch21 from measurements of the yield stress dependence on grain size for this type of material. In the present investigation, new Brinell and Rockwell B hardness measurements have been made as a function of grain size for a cartridge brass and a leaded brass. In addition, diamond pyramid hardness values were measured as a function of the indentation size. All these results are applied to a further analysis of the hardness dependence on grain size. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Cartridge brass and a leaded brass were selected for this investigation for two main reasons: it was anticipated 1) that these materials could be cold-worked and recrystallized to a wide range in grain size and 2) that the results to be obtained on these typical industrial materials could be usefully compared with previous investigations. The chemical analyses of the actual materials which were employed are given in Table I. The as-received 1/2- and 3/4-in.-thick plates were given various reductions in thickness by cold rolling. The rolled material was heat-treated at various temperatures between 330" and 850°C for differing time periods from 5 min to 9 hr to achieve a variation in the average grain diameter between 0.0339 and 0.000543 cm.22 During heat treatment, the brass was protected from zinc loss by packing it in chips or foils of the same composition material. Reasonably equi-axed grain structures were obtained in each case. The metallurgical grain sizes of the specimens were determined from measurements of the average linear intercept on a random line. AN investigation of the phase relationships between the 6 phases of the uranium-molybdenum and uranium-titanium systems was conducted by studying alloys ranging in composition from uranium-31.5 at. pct Mo to uranium-34 at. pct Ti. A ternary cut showing these phase relationships is presented upon the basis of thermal-analysis data obtained and upon the basis of metallographic and X-ray examination of heat-treated and quenched specimens. Isothermal ternary sections, inferred from phase relationships determined between the two 6 phases, are presented for the uranium-molybdenum-titanium system. In the compositional range investigated, a y-ura-nium solid solution exists at elevated temperatures. At about 900°C the 6-U2Ti phase, with limited molybdenum solubility, forms. Epsilon, a molybdenum-titanium-rich solid solution appears at the same temperature and appears in all phase regions that exist below this temperature except in the terminal 6-phase regions. The y phase is stable to approximately 660°C in titanium-rich alloys; the y and 6-U,Ti phases decompose at this temperature to a uranium in a peritectoid reaction. The y phase in molybdenum-rich alloys of the ternary cut studied decomposes in an apparent eutectoid reaction, at about 593°C, to the 6-uranium-molyb-denum and a-uranium phases. The e phase while present, presumably plays a negligible role in these reactions. Titanium was found to markedly decrease the stability of retained y in these alloys. Age-hardening characteristics developed in titanium-contain ing uranium-molybdenum alloys quenched from 900°C and aged at 500°C are ascribed to decomposition of Y to the a and E phases. INTRODUCTION Alloys of uranium with molybdenum, titanium, and zirconium, respectively, are of great interest because of their potential use as reactor fuels. As a result, this interest extends to the constitution of these alloys, particularly in view of their uniqueness of constitution. In these systems, alone, among known uranium-alloy systems, an intermediate phase forms by direct decomposition of the high-temperature y-uranium phase. As a prelude to possible future alloy development, an investigation has been undertaken of the phase relationships that occur between the intermediate phases of these systems. These phase relationships have already been reported for the intermediate 6 phases of the uranium-zirconium and uranium-titanium systems.' The results of an investigation of the phase relationships between the 6 phases of the uranium-molybdenum and uranium-titanium systems are reported here. The phase relationships that occur in the binary systems pertinent to this investigation are shown in Fig. 1. Phase nomenclature appearing throughout this report is as shown in these diagrams; the crystal structure of the phase is given in Table I. Anglo Asian Mining have recently installed an industrial-scale UF/RO plant to treat process liquors from the integrated heap leach/agitation leach/ resin-in-pulp gold ore treatment facilities at their Gedabek gold-copper mine in Azerbaijan. The UF/RO plant is designed to treat 60 m3/h of leach solution to produce discharge quality water. The RO concentrate, which contains elevated concentrations of copper, silver and cyanide, is sent to the company’s SART plant for the recovery of the metal values as a precipitated sulphide concentrate and the cyanide, which is recycled to leaching. The new water treatment plant improves the sustainability of the operations at Gedabek by enabling replacement of fresh water input with RO permeate and safe discharge of permeate to the environment, during periods of excess water balance. The paper includes pilot plant data and early results from the full-scale plant.

Brohm Mining Company's Gilt Edge Mine in the northern Black Hills was a surface heap-leach operation that was active from the 1980s until 1999. Financing problems and acid drainage concerns at the mine were reported in the late 1990s. In February of 1999 the Governor of South Dakota announced plans to request the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help clean up acidic water at the mine and reclaim the site. In July 1999 the parent company of Brohm, Dakota Mining, filed for bankruptcy in Canada. Because of the bankruptcy and environmental problems, the State of South Dakota intervened and began water treatment. The mine was declared a Superfund site in 2000. Hydrologic issues include the potential for acidic drainage from the site. The mine is at the headwaters of Strawberry Creek, which drains into Bear Butte Creek. About four miles downstream, Bear Butte Creek loses its discharge to swallow holes in the karstic Madison Limestone aquifer, a regionally extensive and valuable ground-water reservoir. Other concerns at the site include treatment of acidic water in mine pits and a waste rock dump.

Improved environmental performance comprises one of the key objectives of the sustainable development in the mining industry. Within this framework, a research project was undertaken by TVX Hellas, a mixed sulphides producer in northern Greece, in order to develop and evaluate anaerobic wetlands as an alternative method for the treatment of acidic waters originating from old mine areas. The anaerobic treatment using organic substrates, aimed to neutralize the acidity of the mine drainage and remove the dissolved metals, such as Fe, Zn, Mn etc., in the form of insoluble compounds retained within the substrate. The effectiveness of this treatment method, as compared with the conventional neutralization techniques with alkaline additives, extensively used in the mining industry, was assessed based on environmental and economic indicators. The indicators applied included contaminant removal, land take per unit of contaminant removed, effluents quality, remediation of past environmental damage, energy and reagents consumption, capital and operating cost. Based on the above, the applicability of anaerobic wetlands for the treatment of acidic streams originating from old mined areas was concluded.

PPC (Public Power Corporation) operates a new power plant at the South-West part of Crete. Recently the extension of the Power Plant started. ATHENA SA the main contractor of the project assigned to EXORIXI SA the implementation of a blast vibration monitoring program and prevention-evaluation of risks caused by construction blastings inside or very close to the operating part of the power station. The blasting parameters and characteristic elements that had been evaluated, the measures that had been taken and materialized, the overall risk management and the results of the whole program are presented in this paper.

Rampura Agucha open pit mine has successfully been excavated to a depth of 320 m, incorporating multistage working. The key to success is the implementation of presplitting as control blast measures at every stage of mining, including intermediate cut backs, in addition to the final wall. The major challenges encountered in establishing presplitting in the hang wall as compared to the footwall of the mine are:reversely dipping foliation, ie dipping into the hang wall itselfstriking obliquely at an angle of 20–30° with regards to the general strike of the pit wallthe presence of numerous geological planes of weaknesses like major faults, slips, etc.Control blast parameters like hole inclination, spacing and stand-off with buffer row were chosen initially from the literature survey and were subsequently fine-tuned by field trials to the mine geo-mining conditions of the hang wall. Robert H. Richards, Boston, Mass.: Mr. Goodale calls attention to the difficulty of obtaining clean tailings from the jigs which are fed by the spigots of the hydraulic separator. This difficulty is universally encountered. The Lake Superior copper mills practically overcome it by running the beds of those jigs loose, carrying into the hutch all of the available copper and some sand. These hutches are again jigged upon threesieve Collom jigs, where the treatment is very slow and gentle; and on the successive jigs lighter and lighter bedding is used. The last sieve is run thin enough to let some sand into the hutch. With these precautions most of the free copper is extracted, as well as a fair proportion of the included copper.

"A magnetic proximity detection system is mounted on a mobile mining machine to prevent underground workers from being pinned or struck by machine motion. The system generates magnetic fields around the machine to determine safe working distances. The minerworn component measures the magnetic field in order to approximate location. Large masses of steel, such as those from mining equipment, can alter the magnetic field distribution. This affects the locational accuracy of the system, thus adversely impacting worker safety. To examine this problem, U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a method and test system to study the influence of a steel mass on the magnetic field distribution. The results show that a steel plate can strengthen the magnetic field perpendicular to the generator by up to 40 percent. Furthermore, they show that the degree of the influence on the field distribution is a function of distance. The results from this study can be used to further develop and improve the performance and reliability of electromagnetic proximity detection systems used in underground mining applications.IntroductionOn average, 250 miners are injured every year, and 43 miners were reported to be killed by striking or pinning accidents involving continuous mining machines in the United States between 1984 and 2015, according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA, 2015). Continuous mining machines are large mobile machines used to mechanically cut coal in underground mines. These machines weigh approximately 60 t (132,000 lb) each. Although modern continuous mining machines can be remotely controlled, operators still need to be close to the machine primarily because of the low visibility and wide blind spots of the underground working environment.The MSHA promulgated a final regulation in 2015 that requires the use of proximity detection systems on all continuous mining machines except fullface machines. MSHA has approved five such systems to be intrinsically safe for use in underground coal mines: (1) Strata Worldwide’s HazardAvert System, (2) Frederick Mining’s Model 200 HazardAvert Detection System, (3) Nautilus International’s Coal-Buddy System, (4) Matrix Design Group’s M3- 1000/Joy Global SmartZone Gen 1 and (5) Matrix Design Group’s IntelliZone/ Joy Global SmartZone Gen 2."

The rainfall during the last six months of 1942 in Scranton and vicinity was 24.06 in.—only 4.35 in more than the average for this district in any equivalent period—yet that rain forced The Hudson Coal Co. to handle 38.8 tons of water for every ton of coal mined. It filled to overflowing, or to a higher level, 14 flooded mine areas holding, in total volume, 8.3 billion gallons of water in storage; brought about a pumpage of 11.4 billion gallons in the months of December 1942 and January, February and March 1943 Half of the total energy generated or purchased (44,322,980 kw-hr.) was required to keep the mines sufficiently free of water to permit the mining of coal during a period of much needed output. Fig. I shows the extent to which this flooding of exhausted and idle properties has proceeded, and is known to be proceeding further, at the upper end of the Northern field. This rainfall (24.06 in.) means 80,559,444 tons of water on approximately 46.2 sq. miles of area tributary to the pumping plants. During the high rainfall period, 72,687,661 tons went underground, being pumped at the stations in this territory. This means an inflow of 88per cent, a runoff of 12 per cent compared with 64 per cent during normal conditions in a normal region. During this period no floods, either surface or underground, had to be dealt with, although the streams and rivers were high on several occasions. In general, the rainfall for the first three months of 1943 can be described as heavy but not abnormal.9 These figures not only indicate the large volumes of water to be handled but, by their very size, they also emphasize that the mine-water problem is not to be conquered, at least from an economical standpoint, by merely buying and installing more and more pumps. Into the solving of this water problem must go much planning, adhering to the principle of keeping the highest percentage of water at the highest possible level for the longest period of time; the storage of huge volumes in sumps capable of being reduced after the flood inflow and at rates less than the inflow; plans for prevention of surface inflow; provision of the minimum of pumping capacity arranged to as nearly 100 per cent pumping load factor as is possible; intercompany joint pumping plants; the conducting of water from one plant to another and from one property to another over distances measured in miles; priorities in power to the threatening situations; and. balance of the necessities and dangers existent in one colliery over another, day by day, when quantities of water are running high. Despite these astronomical figures of water volumes, their disposal to the surface is accomplished reasonably cheaply because, although the annual cost of $575,020 is a large sum, the cost per ton is about 0.1168 cents. In 1948, it became clear that the ventilation system of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines, would be inadequate for future operations. The,paper describes in detail the process of designing an entirely new ventilation system for a large underground mining operation. The system was based on a single new upcast airway to be located on the boundary of the two properties, which were to be ventilated in parallel as two separate ventilating districts.From calculations of resistance, and assessments of future air requirements, the duties of a new exhaust fan to be located on the collar of the upcast airway were specified as 700,000 cubic feet per minute at 2·6 in. w.g. total pressure for initial operation in 1953 increasing to a maximum of 900,000 c.f.m. at 3·6 in. w:g. total pressure ten years later. The economic size of the new airway was calculated from a consideration of the first thirty years operation of the system, and it was decided to provide a 20 ft. diameter concrete-lined shaft.The new system went into operation five years after the initial planning, and the effect of the difference between actual and predicted rates and distribution or production are discussed. The final result was entirely satisfactory.INTRODUCTIONThe first proposal for an investigation of The Zinc Corporation Limited-New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited ventilation system with a view to putting it on a proper technical basis was made in 1938. A new Main Shaft was then being sunk, and it was decided to postpone the enquiry until this had been completed to No. 14 Level, when operations would be temporarily suspended and the shaft commence to operate as a major airway. [Introduction] Since excess lung cancer mortality was first noted in the late 1800's among Joachimsthal-Schneeberg miners, there have been a number of studies of the long term health effects among various types of miners exposed to elevated levels of radon and its radioactive decay daughters. Substantial excesses of lung cancer have been noted among miners in the Joachimsthal mines (Sevc, 1976) , lead-zinc miners in Sweden (Axelson, 1979) , fluorspar miners in Canada (DeVilliers, 1971) , iron miners in Sweden (Renard, 1974) , uranium miners in Canada (Hewitt, 1976), and metal (Wagoner, 1963) and uranium miners in the United States (Lundin, 1971; Archer, 1976). The latter prospective cohort has also been shown to be at an excess risk of death due to tuberculosis, nonmalignant respiratory disease, and accidents when followed through September 30, 1974 (Archer, 1976). This report extends the followup of this cohort of miners through December 31, 1977 and expands the mortality analysis to investigate more cause-specific categories. [Methods] During the decade beginning with July, 1950, medical teams from the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) examined 3362 white and approximately 780 nonwhite males who had worked underground in uranium mines in the Colorado Plateau at least one month by January 1, 1964. Occupational, medical, and smoking histories were obtained during the examinations and often updated/confirmed during subsequent annual censuses of the miners conducted by the USPHS. The white miners now have been followed-up through December 31, 1977 using the Social Security Administration, Internal Revenue Service, direct telephoning and various other sources. Death certificates were obtained for the deceased and coded directly into the Seventh Revision of the International Classification of Diseases, Adapted, using the rules in effect at the time of death. Deceased miners for whom no certificate has yet been located were assumed dead on the date specified by the reporting agency, cause of death unknown. The uranium miners cohort was analyzed using a modified life-table system developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Person-years at risk of dying (PYAR) were calculated for each miner from his first USPHS medical examination date or date upon completion of one month of underground uranium mining if that was later. PYAR were calculated specific for five-year age groups, calendar periods, and periods after first underground uranium mining. The numbers of cause-specific observed deaths among the cohort occurring by December 31, 1977 were compared to the numbers of expected deaths. The expected deaths were calculated by multiplying the appropriate PYAR by the United States death rates for white males specific for five-year age groups, five-year calendar periods, and cause. The results were summed over the age and calendar period specific categories to obtain the total expected deaths for each cause. Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR's) were calculated for each cause by dividing the observed number of deaths by the expected number of deaths and multiplying by 100. In some tables, two-sided 95% confidence intervals for the SMR's were computed using either Fisher exact confidence limits, if the observed frequency was less than eight, or approximate confidence limits, if the observed frequency was eight or greater, to indicate statistical significance. Because a priori hypotheses had been well established, one-sided lower confidence limits were used for tuberculosis, lung cancer, other nonmalignant respiratory disease (ONMRD), accidents, and total mortality. [Results] The cohort included 589 miners first examined in either 1950, 1951 or 1953; 753 first examined in 1954; 1235 first examined in 1957; 5 first examined in 1958; and 782 first examined in 1960. In Figure 1 the distribution of the cohort by first year of underground uranium mining indicates that 13.7% started before 1947 and would have thus had an opportunity to be followed beyond 30 years

The microwave region of the radio spectrum was effectively utilized in radar designs during the recent war and it has become of increasing interest in the field of communications. Work in this field has led to an important use for silicon—that of the point contact rectifiers†1 in the frequency converter of microwave (radar or radio) receivers—and has stimulated considerable interest in the electrical properties and preparation of silicon and its alloys. Silicon is an electronic semiconductor. Its conductivity at room temperature results principally from the presence of certain impurities. While for metals an increase in impurity content increases the resistivity, for semiconductors such as silicon the opposite occurs and, in general, the addition of impurities lowers the resistivity. Silicon materials may be classified into one of two groups depending upon the manner in which the impurities contribute to electrical properties. These have been termed for convenience p-type or n-type. P-type silicon develops a very large positive thermal emf against metals, has a Hall coefficient of positive sign and a low resistance direction in point contact rectification with the silicon positive with respect to the point. N-type silicon, on the other hand, develops a negative thermal emf against metals, has a Hall coefficient of negative sign and a low resistance direction in rectification with the silicon negative with respect to the point. Impurities which produce n-type silicon are called donors inasmuch as these elements contribute to electrical conductivity by donating electrons to an unfilled energy band in the silicon. On the other hand, elements which produce p-type silicon are known as acceptors as these impurities contribute to the electrical conductivity by accepting electrons from a filled energy band permitting what is known as conductivity by "holes" in which the sign of the carriers appears to be positive. A general treatment of the mechanism of conduction in semiconductors from the viewpoint of modern band theory has been given recently by Pearson,2 by Becker, Green and Pearson,3 and by Torrey and Whitmer.4 In this investigation boron and aluminum have been found to be acceptors, and phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony to be donors in silicon. Data on the effect of boron and phosphorus on the electrical properties, when present singly and in combination, have been acquired. These data are discussed in the present paper. Raw Materials Used and Methods for Adding Seeond Constituents Silicon from two sources was used in this work and these will be referred to as A and B respectively. Silicon A is a material of high purity supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. It is prepared by chemical purification of "commercial" silicon obtained from the arc furnace reduction of SiO2. It contains 99.8 pct silicon, minimum, with small amounts of calcium, iron, aluminum, boron, and phosphorus as the principal impurities. This material was extensively employed in these studies as well as in the commercial preparation of rectifier materials. Silicon B is a material of high purity from the du-Pont Co. It is prepared by a pyrolytic reduction of Sicl4 and is free of analytically detectable amounts of boron and phosphorus. Its use permitted study of the effect of boron and phosphorus individually on the properties. This material contains, however, spec-troscopic traees of a number of metals, some of which affect electrical and rectification properties. Typical analyses for the two grades of silicon are given in Table 1. To make controlled additions of boron to the charge it was necessary to employ a low boron content master alloy since the quantity of boron to be added was usually only a few thousandths of one percent. The alloy containing nominally one percent boron was prepared by melting chemically pure boron with silicon A using the melting techniques for 320 g silicon

THE peak of production from the Appalachian natural gas field was apparently reached about 10 years ago, and the annual production from Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio has now dropped to about two-thirds of the amounts obtained in 1916 and 1917. This .falling off in production has occurred in spite of vigorous efforts and large expenditures by producing companies to maintain or increase their output. The greatly increased costs of development and handling are reflected in the present average value of natural gas at the point of consumption, which value in the three states referred to, has more than doubled in the past 10 years. While it is true that the natural gas production of the United States has increased during recent years, this increase has come from southwestern states, particularly from Oklahoma, California, Louisiana and Texas, which states are now leaders in the production of this valuable but fleeting resource. Pennsylvania, originally the leading state in natural gas production, occupies sixth place in the latest (1924) U. S. Bureau of Mines statistics. West Virginia, which held first place for 15 years, has dropped to third rank, and Ohio is the seventh state in the order of natural gas production. Domestic and industrial demands for gas are constantly increasing everywhere in the United States. These growing demands have accentuated the difficulties in the localities with depleted natural gas supplies, and serious shortages have already occurred during winter months in the Pittsburgh district. Some relief has been obtained by placing restrictions on the industrial use of natural gas, and by increasing the price (which tends to reduce consumption). Yet these are but temporary expedients for checking gas consumption, which fail to solve the problem of adequate future supplies of gas.

The chains of armored face conveyor (AFCs) are constantly in contact with water and wet coal, which results in a significant proportion of unplanned downtime experienced on longwall equipment due to corrosion. While reverse osmosis (RO) is one of the most prevalent water treatment methods for reducing salinity and dissolved solids in coal mining, its impact on the corrosion of the AFC chains has not been well studied. This work studies the direct effects of RO water on the corrosion of AFC chains. Immersion tests followed by surface micromorphology analysis and corrosion indices indicate that the RO water increased the corrosion rate of the AFC chains due to the reduced tendency of preventive films on the chains.

With an increasing need to obtain metals by processing complex fine intergrown ores, the use of electron-optical techniques will become more important as a tool for mineralogical studies. Electron images enable a higher spacial resolution than can be obtained by optical microscopy and thus provide a powerful and necessary aid for the examination of small grains and finely locked particles. In this paper the mineralogy of Meggen ore was investigated. Both light-optical and electron-optical techniques were used to evaluate the mill feed and products of the concentrator. Detailed examination by reflected-light microscopy to assess the comportment of galena in the complex pyritic ore was inconclusive in establishing the cause for low lead recovery of only forty percent of the ore's lead content. Electron microprobe analyses indicated that the majority of the lead lost to the tailings was accounted for by extreme fine (often smaller than one micron) and complex intergrowths of galena in pyrite. The remainder was lost as fine free galena grains.
