(communication to the Secretary*): The recent papers in the Transactions by Vogt,' Lindgren2 and Weed: on ore-deposits that have formed as a direct result of igneous intrusions, show that deposits of this class are widely distributed over the world, and are occasionally of commercial value. This is especially true if we consider under this head all deposits in the zone of contactrnletamorphism, the origin of which may be ascribed to the gases and vapors generated by the heat of the intrusive rock. Mr. Smith's description of the Chillagoe garnet-formations containing copper, leads one to regard these depoaits as of contactrmetamorphic origin, although he gives certain reaeons for supposing them to be of igneous origin.

One of the advantages presented by electric drive in many classes of work is the ease with which the electric motor can be controlled automatically. In a large number of cases certain features of the control are automatic—for example, the rate of acceleration may be limited automatically or the equipment may be stopped automatically at the limit of travel—but the equipment is started and ordinarily is stopped by hand. In other cases the motion of the machinery is utilized to start, control the speed, and stop the motor automatically, independently of any operator. A considerable proportion of the large mine hoists now in use have certain automatic features, particularly protective devices against overwinding, and, in some classes of electric hoists, devices for preventing excessive acceleration or retardation. The large automatic hoists discussed in this paper, however, are completely automatic, i.e., capable of making their trips without the presence of an operator at the control levers. According to circumstances, various advantages may be obtained . by automatic control, chief of which are decreased power consumption, increased precision and safety of operation, and decreased cost of attendance. The first step in the analysis of a prospective automatic mine hoist is to determine whether automatic operation is feasible at all. If men are to be hoisted, or levels changed, the attention of an operator is required for these purposes; but under some conditions it may be entirely practicable and advantageous to build the equipment so that, while provision is made for hoisting men or changing levels, ore can be hoisted automatically from any one level. If, however, an operator's attention is required every few minutes for changing levels, handling men or drills, or other work requiring hand control, it is obvious that automatic operation between times will not be of any practical benefit.

Prof. J. C. BRanner, Stanford University, Cal. (communication to the Secretary): On p. 398, Mr. Hedburg mentions Marionite and Brannerite as ores of zinc. Neither of these has been authoritatively recognized as a distinct mineral species. Marionite, originally described by Elderhorst, was subsequently determined to be nothing else than hydrozincite. Analyses of the so-called Brannerite were sent by me to Prof. Penfield, who says it is a mixture of Smithsonite with some other mineral. On p. 398, Mr. Hedburg says the zinc-bearing formation of North Arkansas " is recognized as the Upper Silurian." So far as my observation goes, the ores occur both in Lower Carboniferous and in Ordovician or Lower Silurian rocks, but nowhere in rocks known to be of Upper Silurian age. If Mr. Hedburg has any paleontological evidence of the Upper Silurian age of these rocks, or of any of them, he will confer a favor upon geologists by making it known. On the same page is another statement in which I cannot concur. He says that in this region, " it can easily be seen that the largest fissure-deposits have been eroded and washed away, leaving here and there a few patches adhering to the hillsides." I am compelled to say that in many years' study of the geology of the region in question, I have never been able to recognize such a state of affairs as Mr. Hedburg here describes. The patches which he regards as remnants of fissure-veins, " adhering to the hillsides," I have found to be either the edges of bedded deposits, or portions of the zinc-bearing breccias, formed along old drainage-lines, and laid bare by the ordinary processes of erosion. That fissure-deposits have been partly removed by the same agency, goes without saying; but it is, in ,my judgment, no more true of North Arkansas than of any other mining-region that erosion has selected and washed away " the largest " deposits. A zinc-pyrite ore from the Gray deposit in Jo Daviess County, Ill., was successfully concentrated on a laboratory scale. Initially, drill cuttings were submitted for separation of zinc and iron concentrates. Subsequent to mine development, a large sample of coarse ore was submitted to ascertain its amenability to sink-float treatment to produce a low-grade zinc-iron concentrate and discard a clean tailing. The samples of ore were submitted to the Rolla Metallurgical Branch by the Mining Division of the Federal-Bureau-of Mines. They were obtained during the recent war as a part of the extensive government program to increase metal production through exploration for new mineral deposits and investigation of old mineralized areas. The first sample consisted of about 3,000 pounds of drill cuttings collected, during the Bureau?s churn and diamond- drilling program. The second sample was taken at a later date, after Tri-State Zinc, Inc., had opened the deposit and commenced milling the ore. This sample consisted of a ?ton-of mill feed crushed through 2 inches and collected over a period of 3 days.

This paper presents a novel application of the boundary element method for numerical modelling of the seismic activity and hazard that is associated with the shaft pillar extraction at Bambanani mine in South Africa. In the numerical model, the tabular mining excavations are represented by displacement discontinuity elements, and to accommodate crush, shear, and fault slip seismic events, the numerical model is populated with additional displacement discontinuity elements that represent modelled crush- and shear-type failures in the rockmass. Crush-type failures are evaluated by applying the limit equilibrium method and a Hoek-Brown strength criterion, and shear-type failures are evaluated by applying a Coulomb-friction strength criteria to Ortleppshear and geological features. In this paper, the modelling results are presented as time history analyses of modelled potency from 1 January 2010 to 30 June 2022 and normalised exceedance rates for different mining periods using an upper-truncated power law. The normalised exceedance rates of seismic events that have moment magnitude Mw ≥ 1.0 are lowest for the initial mining period (26 events per year) and highest for the final mining period (218 events per year). The relative errors of the modelled potency and normalised exceedance rates are typically less than 10% or 15%, which suggests that the modelling methodology is appropriate for medium- and longer-term forecasting of seismic activity and hazard, as presented in this paper. Shorter-term forecasting is not considered in this paper.

In this paper we present a case study of the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of cultural heritage management strategies at the Lihir gold mine in Papua New Guinea. We discuss the contextual drivers and constraints, and outline the ways in which Lihir Gold Limited is aiming to set new industry bench marks for the region through the development of values-based best practice cultural heritage management programs. This approach is largely based upon a compliance partnership with a local stakeholder group. We argue that such partnerships are a prudent means of mitigating company risk, while constituting a far more necessary tool for local people in the reconceptualisation and negotiation of the experiences of significant social change and modernisation experienced in the context of recent resource development.

As the result of a study of an area comprising some 100 square miles in the Missouri-Kansas Zinc district known to have produced zinc Ore from horizons below the Grand Falls formation, it was concluded that these horizons could become an important future source of zinc. To test this conclusion and to ascertain the general conditions associated with these lower-horizon ore deposits, the Bureau of Mines undertook detailed drilling of localities thought to be favorable for deposition of ore in the Reeds Spring and. Fern Glen formations. Two sites in the Galena, Kans., mining camp were chosen for this purpose. Ninety churn-drill holes totaling 19,338 feet of bore were completed by the Bureau in two campaigns that extended from October 1944 to June 1946. Approximately 25 percent of the holes encountered ore and indicated three separate ore bodies containing substantial tonnages. Observations made during the course of the work revealed that certain structural conditions are common to ore deposits in the Reeds Spring and. Fern Glen formations.

The sign of the surface charge of selected potassium soluble salt minerals namely KClO4 , K2SO4 , KNO3, and KCl was determined from nonequilibrium electrophoresis measurements and found to be negative for each of the salt. Dodecylamine flotation of these salts revealed that the concentration of amine required for flotation increases in the order KClO4< K2SO4< KNO3<KCI. Precipitation of the amine collector colloid was not required for flotation of the oxyanion salts and in this case it appears that adsorption of the dodecylamine cation is sufficient to create the hydrophobic surface state. The order for flotation is explained in terms of surface hydration of these respective potassium salts based on contact angle measurements and FT Raman spectroscopic characterization of water structure.

The temperature dependence of: a) electrolyte density, viscosity and electrical conductivity and b) the equilibrium constants of formation for all relevant species have been determined as part of an effort to model the operation of a copper electrowinning cell based on reactive electrodialysis. The studied ranges were: 1.01 to 1.25 g/cm3 for density, 4.9x10-4 to 16.4x10-4 kg m-1 s-1 for viscosity and 0.02 to 86.0 Sri m-1 for electrical conductivity. Density and the electrical conductivity of the catholyte increased linearly with temperature whereas the viscosity increase was exponential. The main effect of ionic speciation was to decrease the electrical conductivity with increasing metal concentration due to ion association (mainly the formation of bisulphate ion) which lowered the concentration of protons (the most mobile species) in solution. This effect was specially noticeable in the anolyte. Mathematical relationships with correlation coefficients between 0.959 and 1.000 have been found for all the studied variables.

The research presented in this paper investigated the practical aspects of the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, in a manner similar to that used for gold extraction in a typical CIP process, and focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages. The carrier-phase extraction of precious metals using activated carbon offers significant advantages over other processes in terms of simplicity, the high pre-concentration factor, rapid phase separation, and relatively low capital and operating costs. As a sorbent, activated carbon is still by far the most important material because of its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, porous structure, negligible environmental toxicity, low cost, and high purity standards. Adsorption tests were conducted on a pregnant alkaline leach solution (0.15 ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) resulting from cyanide extraction performed in column leach tests. The initial adsorption rates of Pt, Pd, and Au were very fast and recoveries of these three metals were approximately 90 per cent after 2 hours, and 100 per cent for Pt, 97.4 per cent for Pd, and 99.9 per cent for Au after 72 hours. The parameters that influence the extraction of PGMs and Au were examined to assess their relative importance during the adsorption process in order to provide the basis for process optimization. The concentration of thiocyanate was not identified as significant factor for PGMs adsorption, while Ni concentration was the most significant extraction process parameter. Base metal cyanide complexes adsorb and compete with the PGM complexes for sites on activated carbon, and while copper adsorption can be minimized by adjusting the residence time, Ni adsorbs at approximately the same rate as the PGMs, influencing the loading capacity and adsorption kinetics of the PGMs. The feasibility of eluting platinum and palladium cyanide complexes from activated carbon using an analogue of the AARL process was investigated. Platinum and palladium elute from activated carbon almost to completion in 4 to 5 bed volumes at 80°C, while the elution of gold at this temperature is slow, with a significant amount of gold still to be eluted after 16 bed volumes. The equilibrium loading of gold is exothermic in nature (Fleming and Nicol, 1984) which will result in an increase in gold elution kinetics with an increase in temperature at similar pre-treatment conditions. A similar result was found for the elution of Pt and Pd. Cyanide pre-treatment was found to have a significant influence on PGM elution. Higher cyanide concentration in the pre-treatment step results in more efficient elution up to a point, and results suggest the possibility of an optimum cyanide concentration, beyond which elution efficiency starts decreasing due to increased ionic strength.

The Co-19 at.%Al-6 at.%W alloy was prepared by two methods of casting. We used arc melting under an argon atmosphere with casting into a copper water-cooled casting mold and induction melting furnace with casting into a ceramic Al2O3 mold. According to the X-ray and SEM analyses, phase compositions depend on the cooling rate of the ingot after melting. After arc melting, the cast alloy has a three-phase structure, consisting of  cobalt (FCC), intermetallic phases CoAl (B2) type, and Co3W (DO19) type. After the induction melting, the alloy has a three-phase structure, consisting of  cobalt (FCC), intermetallic phases CoAl (B2) type, and Co7W6 () type. All phases in the investigated ternary alloy at the room temperature are ferromagnetic. Curie temperatures of all obtained phases were defined. It is shown that the magnetic properties of the studied alloy are typical for soft magnetic materials.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an experimental degasification project in Island Creek Coal Co.&apos;s Virginia Pocahontas No. 5 mine. Methane from the over- lying Pocahontas No. 4 coalbed was entering mine workings in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed through fractures in the roof rock. Small-diameter (1-5/8-inch) holes were drilled into the overlying coalbed to reduce the gas pressure and intercept methane flows, which were piped to the surface through an under- ground 6-inch-diam steel pipeline. The total methane flow rate from the vertical holes averaged 150,000 ft3/day for the first month. Methane flows into the mine were reduced by 47 pct, thereby demonstrating the effectiveness of this form of degasification in reducing ventilation requirements and providing a safer working environment.

Experimental work at this plant comprised chiefly the stagnant pulp modification of carbon-cyanidation although considerable work was done in the grinding and activation of carbon, and testing various methods of extracting adsorbed gold from carbon. Over 2 million tonnes of smelter slags containing Co, Ni and Cu are produced and stockpiled in Canada each year. Smelters also produce SO2 an air pollutant. Recycling these materials will maximize the value of natural resources and minimize possible environmental impacts of industrial operations. The objectives of this research were to understand the characteristics of slag, the reaction of slag with SO2(aq) and to develop a novel method for extracting Co, Ni and Cu from slag using SO2. The properties of slags from different smelters were studied, with emphases on the form of Co, Ni, Cu and Fe. Leaching experiments were carried out in a batch reactor. The parameters investigated included concentration of SO2(aq), stirring speed, particle size, temperature and pH. O2 was introduced into the reactor to study its effect on the system. The amount of each of Co, Ni and Cu in all the slags was less than 1%, while Fe was between 30% and 45%. The form of Co and Fe was primarily oxide, however, significant portions of Ni and Cu were present as sulphides. SO2(aq) alone, was effective in leaching Co and Fe. Cu dissolution was negligible due to precipitation. The presence of O2 improved Cu and Ni extraction. SO2(aq) was found to be more effective in leaching slag than H2SO4 at the same pH. The leaching process was modelled using the shrinking core model. A scheme was proposed for the extraction of Co, Ni and Cu from slag using SO2(aq). The process makes efficient use of SO2, separates Co and Cu at an early stage, and minimizes the consumption of base during Fe separation.

A study has been made of the use of ThO2-Y2O3 solid electrolytes to determine activity of chromium in Fe-Cr and Ni-Cr alloys in the temperature range 1300° to 1700°K. This method has been shown to give results which agree with the best vapor pressure measurements. SEVERAL investigations1"5 have been made of chromium activities in Fe-Cr alloys. Most of these have been made by vapor pressure measurements using knudsen cell techniques while one has been made using gas equilibration with H2/H2O gas mixtures. In the present investigation electromotive force measurements have been made on this system using a thoria yttria solid electrolyte. This system was -chosen to establish the technique of measurement at low oxygen potentials, before extending it to Fe-Ni-Cr alloys. The cell used was Pt Cr • Cr2O3 ilThO2 • Y2O3 llalloy • Cr2O3 IPt Since the oxygen pressure of the chromium-chromic oxide mixture lay in the range 10"19 to 1027 atm in the temperature range investigated, thoria yttria electrolytes were used. It was soon found during the investigation that considerable care was required to prepare satisfactory electrolytes and a study was made to find the best method of preparing pellets of TI1O2-Y2O3 solid solution of as near theoretical density as possible. Various compositions in the range 2 to 15 mole pct Y2O3 were studied but the experimental measurements were made with electrolytes containing 4 to 5 pct Y2O3. The method of preparation finally adopted was to use thorium oxalate and yttria as raw materials. The thorium oxalate was decomposed at 900°C for 6 hr to give a reactive powder. This powder was then mixed with the appropriate amount of yttria and ground in an agate mortar for about 4 hr. The powder was moistened with absolute alcohol as a lubricant and pressed in a metal die at a pressure of 7 tons per sq in. The pellets were then heated at 1100°C for 24 hr followed by 24 hr at 1250°C. After this firing cycle the material was reground and repelleted and again fired at 1100° and 1250°C followed by heating for 7 days at 1600°C. It was found in later experiments that a further firing of 4 hr at 2000°C improved the density further and gave pellets of only 2 pct porosity. After firing, the pellets were polished on emery paper and finally with the 2 µ diamond paste. The polishing was followed by a final firing of 24 hr at 1500°C. Investigation showed that this final treatment minimized reaction between the electrolytes and chromium oxide. It was believed that this was because of a lowering of the surface energy of the electrolyte surface. Deep cuts in CO2 emissions will be required to stabilise and, in the long term, decrease CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. Technologies for capturing CO2 from major stationary sources (power stations, industrial plants, etc) and storing that CO2 for long periods of time is one of few near term options for decreasing CO2 emissions. This transition to low carbon intensity energy and possibly the hydrogen economy through renewables and in the long-term technological developments such as artificial photosynthesis.Capture of CO2 from post combustion emissions can be done using a range of technologies though costs are currently high and dependent on the concentration of CO2 in the emissions. Techniques include solvents, pressure swing adsorption and the use of membranes. Options for decreasing capture costs by increasing the concentration of CO2 in the emission stream include the use of oxyfuels (in pulverized fuel types boilers) and by moving to integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) operations either simply for power generation or for poly-generation opportunities. Once the CO2 has been captured it can be stored using a variety of methods. Storage in the ocean has been suggested but is considered an unlikely option because of environmental uncertainties and political opposition. Mineral storage is a niche opportunity. The greatest potential lies in geological storage of CO2 and this option is commanding increased attention from the Australian and international community.In Australia, the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC) is an important new initiative that will support energy companies and energy intensive industries in meeting challenges posed by greenhouse gas issues and assist them in their efforts to reduce their emissions profile.The progress of geo-sequestration and the challenges in the capture and separation of CO2 in the process industries are discussed.

Season cracking of 70-30 cartridge brass cases of small arms and artillery ammunition has been under investigation at the Frankford Arsenal for many years. The nature of this stress-corrosion failure has been found to be intergranular. Much of this work, however, has been directed toward improvements in method of manufacturing the cases so as to reduce the tendency to season crack and little progress had been made toward finding the source of the chemical agent producing the inter- granular corrosion. Ammonia has been shown to produce season cracking in brass and is known to be present in certain atmospheres, particularly industrial, in sufficient concentration to cause cracking. However, in the case of small arms ammunition, the hypothesis that atmospheric ammonia is the cause will not hold, since small arms ammunition is hermetically sealed during storage and yet occasional lots are found to have cracked after 3 to 5 yr. storage. Much of the early study of season cracking in small arms ammunition was done by Nicholas H. Murdza of the Frank- ford Arsenal. In 1936, he suggested that the corrosive agent might be one of the decomposition products of smokeless powder and mentioned nitrogen oxides specifically. Then in 1937, Murdza suggested that the breakdown of smokeless powder in storage resulted in the formation not only of nitrogen oxides but also ammonia

In North-West Nelson the Riwaka Complex, a linear basic intrusive complex, is exposed for approximately 45 kilometres. Some 500 kilometres south, across the Alpine Fault, a linear zone of similar but less well known basic intrusives that may be correlatives of the Riwaka Complex is exposed discontinuously for about 80 kilometres. The Complex was emplaced at several centers along a major tensional fracture zone that developed in upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian time. This fracture zone probably formed in response to the development of a west dipping subduction zone that gave rise to the Permian volcanic arcs in east Nelson and western Southland. The Riwaka Complex contains three rock suites. The Fractionation Suite, characterized by cyclic mineral layering and small scale cumulus banding is the largest and is divided into the Ultramafic, Hornblende and Plagioclase Series, each of which is subdivided into several units. The Cumulus Gabbros represent a restricted but important suite of unusual composition, while the third suite is the late phase Diorite Suite.
