Tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunneling is an ever-increasing prospect for underground construction, and, with each new tunnel bored, there are unknown elements. When boring through the earth, even extensive geotechnical baseline reports can miss fault lines, water inflows, squeezing ground, rock bursting and other types of extreme conditions. This article draws on the consider-able field service experience within Robbins to analyze successful methods of dealing with the most challenging conditions encountered. Many tunnel projects are located in areas with relatively poor access along the tunnel alignment and bored under extremely high overburden. These two factors often result in limited geological information. It would be reason-able to state that the deeper the tunnel, the greater the lev-el of uncertainties. When faced with these uncertainties everyone involved with the project including the owner, the contractor and the machine supplier must be prepared to tackle geological surprises. This article describes the problematic geological conditions and associated difficulties faced on three separate projects and the measures that were taken to overcome these difficulties.

DURING the last 15 years much attention has been given to the "contact-metamorphic" ore deposits which mainly occur in limestone close to intrusive contacts. In general, these deposits are characterized by the association of magnetite and simple sulphides with the so-called "contact-metamorphic" silicates. These silicates comprise garnet, epidote, vesuvianite, tremolite, wollastonite, diopside, hedenbergite, ilvaite, and many other rarer forms. The ?contact-metamorphic zones contain also in places minerals with boron, fluorine, and chlorine, like axinite, tourmaline, danburite, fluorite, and scapolite. There is also more or less quartz and coarsely recrystallized calcite. The simple sulphides embrace pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, galena, zincblende, more rarely arsenopyrite. On the whole, sulphantimonides and sulpharsenides are rare. Deposits, of magnetite or chalcopyrite or of both are most common. The deposits have an irregular or rudely tabular form, following main contacts, dike contacts, or stratification planes; they rarely extend for more than 1,500 or 2,000 ft. from the contact; far more commonly they only reach a distance of a few hundred feet from that surface. The deposits are usually formed by replacement of limestone, or allied calcareous rock. Apparently they are found both in relatively pure and in impure carbonate rock. The deposits are geological bodies of a chemical and mineralogical character differing greatly from the adjoining intrusive rock and from the unaltered limestone. They are rich in silica and iron, with more or less of lime, magnesia, alumina, sulphur, and rarer metals like copper. The so-called contact-metamorphic silicates which form the gangue usually are coextensive with the metallic minerals, though of course not necessarily with the merchantable ore. All opinions agree in holding the deposits of epigenetic origin, later than the inclosing limestone. Regarding the origin of the metals and the genesis of the ores there are several opinions.

The review by Professor J. C. Jaeger (Chapter 1) briefly summarizes and discusses a select group of papers by various workers dealing primarily with aspects of fracture in brittle rock materials. Professor Jaeger's treatment is primarily concerned with the correlation of phenomenological and theoretical failure criteria with empirical results from short duration tests at ambient temperatures and generally at low lithostatic and interstitial fluid pressures. As engineering rock mechanics becomes more concerned with new techniques of mineral exploration and production at increasingly greater depths in the crust, it is well to be aware of the effect of the environment -that of the superposed stress field upon the lithostatic and interstitial fluid pressure, the temperature and the duration of the loading upon the failure of rocks either by fracture or flow. All results to be discussed here are from laboratory tests on small homogeneous samples, thus caution should be used in the direct extrapolation of these results to large inhomogeneous rock masses having quite different boundary conditions in the earth. The purpose of this supplement is to briefly point out the major effects of these parameters as examined singly, with all others held constant, and to cite some recent results which apply to the main theme on the brittle failure of rocks. The total stress field imposed upon a small volume of porous and permeable rock in the earth's crust may be thought of as the sum of an applied differential stress, plus a lithostatic pressure, plus an interstitial fluid pressure. The differential stress portion may be completely specified by nine components, six shear and three normal. THIS is a story of a mine discovered in the days of the Conquistadores but that remained unimportant until the second decade of this century. Without the usual legendary history of romance and fabulous riches it has become famous for the development of unexpected metals and unusual problems. These developments and experiences, exciting and interesting as any legend, are the substance of the San Antonio mine of the Santa Eulalia district in northern Mexico. Originally opened for its silver-lead content, it developed a tin deposit of singular economic importance and unique geologic interest, a vanadium orebody that for a few years placed it among the leading vanadium producers of the world, and now lead and zinc sulphide ores. It has been the seem of a disastrous flood that brought deep-sea divers into Mexico's desert mountains and raised important problems regarding ground water, demanding unusual measures. Geology and operating questions relating to the above matters will be discussed and much of it is recent history which has become a part of Mexican mining lore. History Dates Back to 1325 Santa Eulalia is the oldest of American cities, founded in 1325 by the Aztecs under the name of Tenochtitlan and devastated in 1521 by Cortes and his rapacious band of iron-willed adventurers. Their lust for gold burned through the Aztec empire and onward into most of North America. Santa Eulalia was in the path of conquest. In 1591 the district's first ore discovery was made near what is now the San Antonio mine. The ores carried no gold and the silver-lead content was unattractive to the early pioneers. Not until 1700 was real mining activity undertaken.

THE iron trade of America seems on the point of a new departure. After years of struggling against heavy odds, patient endurance in periods of depression and loss, fears and hopes alternating as failure or success seemed to be the penalty or reward ; wanting in sufficient capital, embarrassed by reason of imperfect knowledge and lack of skilled labor, confronted by a powerful foe-every doubt has at last vanished, physical and mechanical difficulties have been largely overcome, capital has become more abundant and remunerative, the excellence of our product has been everywhere established, - and the peculiarities of American character-pluck, energy, and perseverance -have at last placed the trade upon a foundation so broad and stable that upon it we begin to erect the structure of a world-wide business. Concerning the future of the iron trade in the United States there can be but little doubt. The growing scarcity and constantly increasing cost of raw material in Great Britain, their loss of labor by emigration, the social disturbances among the working-classes, assuming a more threatening attitude on each new outbreak ; the rapidly decreasing value of money, in consequence of the enormous production of gold and silver, combine to forbid any return to former prices, and indicate that a point has been reached beyond which any marked increase of production is improbable. The same causes are operating to a greater or lesser extent upon the Continent. . In the meanwhile the growing wants of humanity are rapidly outstripping these sources of supply. Is the Northern Territory different? Certainly it is more remote, has less people and relies more heavily on two or three industries for its survival. On the other hand, its mining industry is governed by Acts not dissimilar to those of the major States - a Mining Act provides the basis for acquisition of tenure, a Mine Management Act provides regulatory control, a Mineral Royally Act collects revenue in return for the right to utilise the land's bounties, an Environmental Assessment Act provides the public face to rehabilitation and environmental safety, and the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act purports to give development criteria for inalienable land use. With the exception of the latter, at least until the advent of Mabo, all these are simply variations on a theme, and are common to most States. This paper will show how the Department of Mines and Energy works in relation to the Northern Territory mining industry.

P. T. Pacific Nikkel Indonesia (PTPNI) was incorporated in Jakarta, Indonesia in February, 1969 by a group of Dutch and North American companies. At the same time, a Contract of Work with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia was signed, granting Pacific Nikkel all the necessary licenses and permits to explore and develop all nonradioactive minerals in two separate areas in Irian Jaya, eastern Indonesia. Nickel mineralization occurrences were confirmed by Dutch geologists in the two areas in 1952 and 1955, however, detailed exploration began in June 1969 after the Contract of Work was signed. Since that time, numerous studies and investigations have been conducted to determine the feasibility of producing metallic nickel in Irian Jaya. Four engineering studies, two bulk sample tests, an oceanographic survey, and a preliminary site investigation indicated that construction and operation of a nominal 100 million pounds per year metallic nickel plant on Gag Island were technically feasible. The fourfold increase in the price of oil in late 1973 without a corresponding adjustment in the price of nickel necessitated a reevaluation of the project, the results of which showed that the project required other conditions to be viable. Subsequently, analysis of: the future projected nickel supply-demand and cost-price relationships, the economics of treating a higher grade feed, and participation by the Government of Indonesia, indicate that the project will be viable. Therefore, planning of the Gag Island Nickel Laterite Project is continuing with the objective of commencing production to supply the market in the 1983-1984 time period.

The Round Mountain mining district, Nye County, Ne- vada, was discovered in 1906 on claims owned by Lewis D. Gordon. Initial mining operations uncovered gold veins of spectacular richness, and within a few days of discovery, Gordon sold his controlling interest for some $87,000. From this sale emerged the Round Mountain Mining Co., predecessor of Nevada Porphyry Gold Mines, Inc., the latter destined to become the major property owner in the area. Vein mining in the district continued sporadically into the early 1930s, yielding 9.3 Mg (330,000 oz) of gold plus substantial silver credits from approximately 626 kt (690,000 st) of ore. In addition to the lode deposits, the early miners recognized the placer potential in the alluvial fan material accumulated around the west and north sides of Round Mountain itself. Intermittent placer operations were carried out for a number of years, and in the 1940s and 1950s, Round Mountain Gold Dredging Co. worked the placers under a lease from Nevada Porphyry Gold Mines. The last placer operation terminated in 1959 when it, like some of its predecessors, proved uneconomic. Total placer production for the district is estimated at 3657 km (4 million yd) of gravel containing 59 Mg (210,000 oz) of gold and possibly 2.0 to 2.3 Mg (70,000 to 80,000 oz) of silver. Round Mountain is a small hill situated on the east flank of the Toquima Range in central Nevada. The hill is com- posed of relatively flat-lying Tertiary rhyolitic ash flow tuffs, which overlie Paleozoic metasediments and Cretaceous granites. Throughout the surrounding Round Mountain mining district, most of the known gold ores occur in the tuffs, although the metasediments and granites are also mineralized. Mineralization is structurally controlled, principally by a series of northwest-trending shears and shattered zones. Vein, stockwork, and disseminated ores occur, usually containing simple quartz-pyrite-gold mineral assemblages. The gold itself is electrum, having a silver content of 30% to 40%. In September, 1967, Elwood Dietrich, a prospector and mine promoter, obtained a purchase option on the 4452 ha (1 1,000 acres) of mineral rights held at Round Mountain by Nevada Porphyry Gold Mines. The original option had a buy-out price of $1 million and was established through Dietrich's friendship with officers of Nevada Porphyry. In April, 1968, Dietrich conveyed his option to Ordrich Gold Reserves Co., a partnership created by a group of west coast investors, mostly employees of the airline industry. There- after, Ordrich invested considerable funds in trying to test and develop the property, but soon recognized the need to seek financial and technical support from the mining industry. In December, 1968, Dietrich contacted Wayne Cavender, then Regional Geologist, Southwest, for Copper Range Exploration Company (CRX) in Tucson, Arizona, and made a data presentation. Shortly thereafter, Cavender was appointed Manager of Exploration and Chief Geologist for Copper Range Co. (parent company of CRX), New York City, and he asked C. Phillips Purdy, CRX Regional Geologist, Northwest, to make an initial property examination. Purdy's one-week field study took place in March, 1969, and resulted in a recommendation that CRX pursue its investigation of the property. The presence of low-grade gold mineralization in both the alluvial gravels and in the bedrock was verifiable, but the placer was deemed to have the greater immediate economic mining potential. At that time, gold was in the $1.41/g ($40 per oz) price range. Working from Purdy's information, Cavender decided to attempt acquisition of the property, and the first in a long series of negotiations was initiated with Ordrich. Basically, CRX felt that the placer had a promising potential for several reasons, including (I) past operators had recovered free gold but not the gold contained in the pebble fraction of the gravels; (2) past operations appeared to have been ineffectively designed or managed and not costefficient; and (3) the price of gold appeared to be poised for an upward move. Negotiations with Ordrich were prolonged and difficult, with CRX competing against several ma* mining companies, but finally an agreement was reached, effective June I, 1970. FOR many years the cost of making pig iron and steel in the Birmingham district has been about the lowest in the United States. The close proximity of the important raw materials such as coal, iron ore, limestone, and the large available scrap supply made it possible to assemble all of the important ingredients necessary for steel-making with only nominal costs for transportation. Both iron ore and coal were being mined in this district at one time for about $1 per ton from underground operations. At that time mining wages were low everywhere and the labor rate in the South was considerably below that of other mining districts. This situation persisted until the emergence of labor unions as an economic and political force, emigation of southern labor to northern plants, and continued growth of industry in the South in the years following the depression of 1932. Since that time union organizing of miners and steel workers throughout the nation has increased labor costs in mining and steelmaking. This influence has been felt particularly in underground mining operations since the proportion of labor cost to total cost is still high. The previous advantage in basic labor rate in the South has been almost entirely eliminated by the equalization of labor rates in basic industries by national unions.

It is a common misconception that the grant of mining tenure, whether it be an Exploration Permit, Mineral Development Licence or Mining Lease, will entitle the holder to access all land within it in order to explore or mine. The ability for miners to access their tenure in order to undertake activities is critical to the industry. While significant time and energy is quite rightly dedicated to resolving native title and cultural heritage issues before the commencement of mining operations, the same cannot always be said for addressing potential impediments that arise as a result of the overlap between mining and other tenures. Miners should be aware of the overlaps that occur with other tenure and the impact of these overlaps on the minerÆs ability to explore or produce from the area. The existence of an overlap with petroleum tenure, nature refuges, national parks, wild river areas or reserves such as aboriginal land leases are all likely to have an impact on the minerÆs ability to access the area and conduct activities. In some instances, such as an overlap with petroleum tenure, Queensland legislation encourages the miner to reach agreement with the holders of the overlapping tenure. However, in other instances, such as an overlap with a national park, mining tenure is unlikely to be granted at all. This paper summarises the impacts and impediments that arise as a result of overlaps of tenure that are likely to affect mining operations. It also provides examples of how these impediments can, if possible, be overcome under Queensland legislation.

Mining Engineers throughout the world have an appreciation for the importance of the role of the Blasthole Drill in one of the primary elements of the mining process. This paper highlights areas that could influence the overall cost effectiveness of that process of breaking rock and the associated downstream mining and ore recovery activities - and how the drill is designed and configured to meet that challenge. Factors influencing drill productivity and overall cost effectiveness are addressed, particularly regarding the benefits which are not necessarily reflected in the drilling process and therefore more difficult to quantify. This paper explores some of the downstream benefits of what we do to the drilling process.

THERE is probably no more interesting group of mineral fuels to be found in any country than that occurring within the limits of the new State of Colorado. The supplies are so abundant, and the occurrence and distribution are so favorable for easy development and transportation to the future manufacturing centres of the State, that they are destined to play a very important part in the material growth and prosperity of the region, the more so because of the rich and varied stores of ores awaiting metallurgical treatment, and the comparative scarcity of timber for fuel. From a purely scientific point, also, these lignitic coals form an interesting and important series. An examination of their geological occurrence and relations opens up new and important questions regarding the comparative value of various kinds of geological evidence, while a study of the character and composition of this class of fuels, which forms a connecting link, as it were, between the lignites and the true bituminous coals, may lead to a more thorough and accurate classification of mineral fuels. (Read at the Wilkes-Barre Meeting, May, 1877.) IN the number of the Engineering and Mining Journal for April 7th, 1877, Mr. W. P. Ward, of Cartersville, Georgia, explains in a very interesting manner, the results he obtained in the manufacture of ferromanganese in the blast furnace. These results may be summed tip as follows : Production in the blast furnace of an alloy containing 67.2 per cent. manganese and 3 per cent. of carbon at most, with a utilization of the manganese amounting to 58 per cent. With the exception of the indicated proportion of carbon, which should be almost doubled to express the true state of facts, we would have had no observations to make on Mr. Ward&apos;s paper had he taken into account the results obtained in the same line in other centres of production. Before 1870, spiegel with 8 or 10 per cent. manganese only was known among blast-furnace products. In a journey to Sweden, in 1871, I ascertained that the Schysshyttan works manufactured regularly a spiegel with 18 per cent. manganese. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), workforce estimates of median age suggest that the median age of the mining workforce, which has been experiencing overall declines in numbers of employees, is rising more rapidly than for the overall U.S. civilian labor force. In the absence of detailed demographic data for the mining industry, the current study uses injury and illness data reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to examine differences, over time and by commodity, in the proportions of injured or ill workers aged 45 years and older. These data indicate that from 1988 to 1998, the percentage of injured or ill older workers (aged 45 years and older) have been steadily increasing. The most notable increase occurred at coal mining operations where the proportion of injured/ill older workers increased from 24 to 44 percent. A more detailed breakdown of the industry by commodity for 1998 showed the highest proportions of older injured/ill workers (over 40%) occurring in coal, iron ore, alumina mills, cement, and trona operations. In coal operations, as the employment size of the mine operation increased, so did its proportion of older injured/ill workers. Also, higher proportions of older injured/ill workers were observed at surface coal work locations than at underground locations. The distribution of older injured/ill miners by occupation for several select commodities shows the highest proportions for supervisors, electricians, mechanics, and surface equipment operators, and the lowest proportions for surface laborers and for underground coal roof bolters and scoop operators. With few exceptions, older injured workers have the highest median number of days lost per injury when examined by type of mining operation and by occupation. Given the high proportions of older injured or ill workers in many sectors of the mining industry, health and safety programs must consider the physiological changes associated with aging when evaluating job tasks and the working environment.

Two recent antitrust cases, coming from widely separated areas, different industries and involving wholly different facts were decided by the Supreme Court on June 7, 1965. The decisions in there two cases may well prove to be the most important and far-reaching decisions in the field of labor law that have been handed down in the last 24 years. These cases, although quite dissimilar factually, had one common element. In both, the gravamen of the antitrust violation was bottomed on the terms of labor agreements negotiated by a multiemployer group. These cases are usually referred to as Pennington1 and Jewel Teat. Since a number of references will be made to the antitrust laws, it may be well to state briefly the applicable portions. Section 1 of the Sherman Antitrust Act makes "every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several states, or with foreign nations, is declared to be illegal...". Section 2 imposes criminal sanctions against "Every person who shall monopolize, or attempt to monopolize, or combine or conspire with any other person or persons, to monopolize any part of the trade or commerce among the several states...". Under Section 4 of the Clayton Act a person who sustains damages as a result of a violation of the anti¬trust laws is entitled to recover treble damages plus costs.

A STUDY of the mechanical properties of the alloys of copper and silver led to the discovery that the solubility of silver in copper was greatly different from that generally supposed, therefore some work was done to determine the solubility with greater accuracy than had previously been achieved. After the work had been completed, two papers were published1 giving solubility figures which agreed closely with one another and with the work described herein. A detailed comparison of that work with the present will be given later. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS The copper used in making the alloys was electrolytic ingot of high purity. The silver was prepared by precipitation as chloride from nitric acid solution, followed by fusion of the washed precipitate with sodium carbonate and potassium nitrate. This method gives metal containing at least 99.99 per cent silver. The copper was first melted under charcoal in a small electric resistance furnace and the silver added as pure silver, it being unnecessary to make any intermediate alloys. After thorough stirring the metal was poured into a mold of suitable form. The alloys contained between 0.008 and 0.015 percent of oxygen. Small amounts of oxide were visible under the microscope, but it is not believed this would have much effect on the results. Copper-silver alloys are notorious for segregation, consequently a few experiments were carried out to find a form of casting with as little segregation as possible. A mold 6 in. long and 1/2-in. dia. was first used, and an alloy nominally containing 5 per cent silver was cast in it, while some of the same alloy was poured directly into water to obtain the maximum rate of cooling possible. At a time when all those interested in the iron trade are carefully scanning the horizon for new sources of the raw material, a few words concerning a field, which though not new, has not been hitherto fruitful of statistical information, may be deemed appropriate at this meeting. The district alluded to is the belt of the Middle James River, or in other words, that portion of the ferriferous belts of Virginia lying between Josua Falls and the little settlement of Norwood, in the counties of Amherst and Nelson, and on the left bank of the James River. This region shows unmistakable signs of developing a very considerable market for iron ores and for iron in the future, as well as a tempting appearance of possible productiveness in the former. It, is extremely hazardous to deal in generalizations as to the productiveness or non-productiveness of these measures without a more thorough development than has yet been attained. It is true that they probably constitute an horizon whence comes a part of the marvellous mineral wealth of the northern peninsula of Michigan. But

"Environmental considerations in addition to technical, economical and societal benefits are increasingly promoting the substitution of natural fibers for glass fiber in polymer matrix composites. However, natural fibers are heterogeneous in their dimensions, specially the cross section, which plays an important role in their mechanical strength. The fibers extracted from the petiole of the buriti palm tree is a relatively unknown but promising natural fiber for composite reinforcement. In this work, a statistical analysis of the density of buriti petiole fibers using the Weibull methodology was performed. An attempt to correlate the fiber density with the diameter, precisely measured by means of a profile projector, was carried out. The results revealed an inverse dependence between the buriti petiole fiber diameter and corresponding density. Fracture tip observation by SEM suggested a possible mechanism that could justify this inverse correlation.INTRODUTIONIn the past decade polymer composites reinforced with natural fibers obtained from cellulose-based plants, known as lignocellulosic fibers, have been applied in several engineering sectors, specially the automobile industry as both interior and outside component [1-4].Environmental benefits as well as economical, social, and technical advantages are actually promoting the substitution of these lignocellulosic for the traditional glass fiber in polymer matrix composites [5]. Today several lignocellulosic fiber are being extensively investigated [6-11] and considered for reinforcement of polymer composites. Some relatively unknown lignocellulosic fiber with reinforcement potential, however, still need to be characterized aiming at future application in composites. This is the case of the fibers stripped of from the petiole of the buriti palm tree, which is endemic in the central and northern regions of South America [12,13]. Preliminary works on the possibility of using the buriti petiole fibers as composite reinforcement, has shown favorable results [14,15]."

"Electric furnace smelting is one of the principal unit operations for ferroalloy production, and increased process intensity, improved availability, minimal maintenance and a longer campaign life are common objectives for electric furnace operation in order to obtain favourable economics of production. Furnace designers have continued to develop innovative solutions, e.g., furnace cooling systems, that have allowed these objectives to be realised and CFD modelling plays a key role in the design process. Enhanced understanding of the energy transfer process in the furnace and the ability to develop, evaluate and optimize components of the crucible design to match process requirements are the key motivators for modelling.This paper provides an overview of recent applications of CFD to the design of electric furnaces. The aim is to illustrate what can be done, and identify areas where further work is needed in this field. Examples include furnace bath simulation, crucible cooling system design, taphole design, baking of Soderberg electrodes, off-gas systems, and fume control and building ventilation. It is argued that the trend is for numerical models to become more encompassing while at the same time more accessible, and therefore further improvements in furnace design will be realised with continued and well validated modelling efforts.IntroductionOne of the main processing steps in ferroalloy production is the smelting of ore in electric furnaces. The three-electrode, AC submerged arc furnace is most prevalent method for smelting in the industry, with shielded-arc and DC plasma arc furnaces achieving limited application (1,2). Commercial furnaces range in size from a few megawatts to more than eighty megawatts of supplied power, and operate with the objective of maximising the return on capital invested. Maximising productivity and energy efficiency are two pathways to achieving this objective, through process intensification, increased availability, minimal maintenance, and increased campaign life for the furnace and associated equipment. Concurrently, the need to reduce the environmental impact of metal production by controlling the emission of particulate emissions, greenhouse gases, and other harmful by-products must also be met."
