It is only in the past decade or so that industrial exploitation of biological resources and techniques has become regarded as a distinct discipline. Commonly referred to as Biotechnology, it embraces biochemistry, microbiology and the engineering sciences and is mainly aimed at the biological conversion of suitable raw materials into desired end products. The catalytic agents are more often than not bacteria although other micro-organisms such as fungi are used. The range of micro-organisms used is wide and the choice depends upon the desired end product, which in turn depends upon the metabolic attributes, genetically engineered or otherwise, of the cells. The metabolic diversity of micro-organisms has been applied to processes such as antibiotic production, food processing, brewing and chemical production, and of course extraction of metals from ores. Metabolic diversity is, to a certain extent, based on nutrition, which, in its simplest form, can be divided into energy source, carbon requirements and nature of the electron donor producing reducing power to the cells. The source of energy may be light, in which case the organisms are phototrophic (eg green plants, algae). The carbon requirements and reducing power may come from organic sources. These organisms are then called heterotrophic (eg man and most bacteria, including the well known Escherichia colt). However, there is a group of bacteria whose energy metabolism depends upon chemical redox reactions, use inorganic carbon (CO2) and obtain their reducing power from reduced chemicals such as metal sulphides. These are known as chemolithotrophs. They play an important role in mineral recycling in nature and are also ideal for extraction of metals from ores. This is because they are extremeophiles being acidophilic (grow at very low pH) and sometimes also thermophilic (grow at very high temperatures). These bacteria operate in such hostile environments that competition, or contamination, by other organisms does not occur. Extraction of metals from ores by chemolithotrophic bacteria is commonly referred to as biohydrometallurgy. Other related areas are bioadsorption of metals from dilute solution,- microbial treatment of metal contaminated wastes and removal of toxic chemicals produced or used during mineral processing. This paper basically reviews the work that Gencor has undertaken in the field of biohydrometallurgy and the advancements it has made in commercialising the technology, but also touches on certain long-term areas of research that are currently under investigation.

The City of Akron will construct the Northside Interceptor Tunnel project, a U.S. EPA/ DOJ CSO Long Term Control Plan Project. The system will provide at least 10.3 million gallons of storage in a 16.5-foot finished ID and 6,660-foot-long rock tunnel. The system will reduce both overflow volume and number of overflow structures on the Cuyahoga River. The project includes deep drop shafts and more than 3,000 linear feet of 48 to 96-inch I.D. sewers installed by trenchless construction methods. This paper will discuss the project background, ground conditions, and other challenges overcome during the design phases.

Based on the rock blasting engineering, The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) network has been implemented for the concept and method of rock blastability classification. The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is a neural network algorithm which is especially suitable for the analysis and visualization of high-dimensional data. It maps nonlinear statistical relationships between high-dimensional input data into simple geometric relationships, usually on a two-dimensional grid. The mapping roughly preserves the most important topological and metric relationships of the original data elements and, thus, inherently clusters the data. SOM allows easy data fusion enabling visualization and analysis of large databases of rock blasting engineering. As a case study, the classification technique based on SOM has been used to classify the rock mass blastability rank. It can be founded from this paper that the SOM networks can be developed well based on a comprehensive data set of rock blasting engineering.

Batch centrifugal gravity concentrators have become standard equipment in gold grinding circuits for recovery of gravity recoverable gold (GRG). The downstream benefits of installing a gravity circuit are well understood, and in general, if there is a reasonable amount of GRG in the ore, a gravity circuit is usually installed. The benefits of gold gravity recovery have also been well documented, with a large database of successful case studies. As well, predicting production scale gravity recovery results ahead of installing gravity has become a common practice. The missing link between lab and full scale has always been the ability to predict the recovery benefit of installing gravity ahead of actually doing so. Being able to predict the recovery benefit in advance would help an operation in assessing the economic benefit and help justify the capital costs of the gravity circuit with much less uncertainty.

Tun mines of the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co. are situated in the Warren Mining District, Cochise County, Arizona, between Bisbee and Warren and adjoin those of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. and the Shattuck Arizona Copper Co. Paleozoic limestones of considerable thickness have been intruded by granite porphyry. A great stock of the intrusive outcrops boldly near the city of Bisbee and is known as Sacramento Hill. From this central core the porphyry has tongued out into the limestone for many thousands of feet as dikes and sills of irregular shape and variable dimensions. Churn drilling has recently developed a large tonnage of secondarily enriched copper ore in the main porphyry mass of Sacramento Hill. While some ore has been found in porphyry in other parts of the district it is relatively unimportant compared with that which occurs in the Paleozoic limestone as irregular lenses replacing favorable beds near porphyry contacts or associated with well-marked fracture zones often many hundreds of feet away from the intrusive. In a zone extending from Sacramento Hill for a distance of from 1,500 to 3,000 ft. the limestone has been extensively metamorphosed and in this contact metamorphic zone the ore occurs through a known vertical thickness of upward of 900 ft. and individual orebodies often show extension in a vertical direction of over 200 ft. At a greater distance from the intrusive stock the ore occurs as lenses of greater horizontal than vertical dimensions with an average thickness of approximately 30 ft. An exception to this rule is found in the occasional steeply dipping mineralized fractures, almost true tabular veins, which are found long distances away from the zone of contact metamorphism.

From October 2000 to April 2001 a local array of fourteen seismograph stations was deployed at the Trail Mountain Mine (TMM), an underground coal mine in Emery County, Utah, to locate mining-induced seismicity (MIS). Original analysis of the data provided epicentral locations that coincided closely with the active longwall panel. The original analysis yielded poor quality hypocenters, however, preventing a useful relation from being made between mining activity and the event depths. For the original analysis, only stations at elevations above mine level were used for locating MIS. As a result, P- and S-arrival times from four of the stations in the local array were not used: an inmine station and three stations at elevations below mine level. This study compares mine workings and active mining to a revised TMM dataset that included P- and S-arrival times from the lower elevation stations that were not used in the previous study. In the revised locations, a modified master event methodology was used to calculate station delays. These station delays correct for errors in the shallow layers of the velocity model. The resulting hypocentral locations have improved depth resolution, determined by a lower root mean square (RMS) for the locations, compared to the original study. Most of the events occur in the roof of the mine and follow the longwall panel. When located using the velocity model determined in the original study, the elevations of the events increase as the longwall panel progresses. One possible explanation for the elevation increase is that it may be related to geology or the caving process. As presented here, a 10% decrease in the shallow velocity structure results in a more plausible location for the hypocenters. Consequently, it is hypothesized that progressive development of the TMM longwall panel(s) may have resulted in a progressive change in the velocity model.

INTRODUCTION THE oxidation of pyrites and marcasite in coal-mine strata to produce discolored acid mine drainage has long been explained by chemical reactions occurring in three stages: I. The iron sulphide minerals are oxidized by air in the presence of water to produce a nearly colorless solution of fer¬rous (iron) sulphate and some sulphuric acid. 2. The ferrous sulphate and part of the sulphuric acid combine with additional oxygen to form ferric (iron) sulphate. 3. The ferric sulphate hydrolyzes to form a reddish-brown precipitate and additional sulphuric acid. Nevertheless, chemical data alone are not sufficient to explain all observed facts. The first stage seems to proceed more slowly in the chemical laboratory than in nature. The second and third stages nor¬mally occur to a marked extent within a few days with raw mine water. However, the visible discoloration that characterizes these latter stages will not develop for months if the mine water is sterilized. By means of bacteriological techniques, two organisms have been isolated from acid coal-mine drainage. These are believed to have a part in promoting the chemical reactions summarized above. One organism is considered to be Thio¬bacillus thiooxidans, which is known to be able to convert elementary sulphur or sodium thiosulphate to sulphuric acid. Its relation to the formation of acid mine drainage has not yet been established. Apparently it does not promote the oxida¬tion of ferrous iron compounds in mine, drainage to the ferric state. The second organism has not been identi¬fied by name but is described as "Gram negative, non-spore-forming rods approxi¬mately 0.4 micron wide by o.8 to 1.0 micron long." A pure culture of this when added to sterile mine water will cause the latter to become amber and develop the typical rusty precipitate. However, it has not been found to convert sulphur com¬pounds to sulphuric acid. Further research is planned to determine whether or not these microorganisms play a significant part in the first stage of oxidation whereby pyrites and marcasite minerals go into solution. Some of the conditions found in abandoned sections of coal mines, such as a reduced percentage of oxygen and increased percentage of carbon dioxide in the air, as well as the existing temperature and acidity ranges, will be tolerated by and may even be favorable to these organisms. PENNSYLVANIA's anthracite region lies in the heart of the richest and most densely populated area of the U. S. Nearly 70 million people live within a radius of 500 miles, in which 130,000 manufacturing plants employ more than 8 million workers. The region comprises some 3000 sq miles and contains 484 sq miles of coal measures, which folding and erosion have divided into four separate and distinct fields, known as the Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle, and Southern. One million people live in the anthracite region proper, and their prosperity depends to a great extent on the anthracite industry, which produces more than $200 million in new wealth for the U. S. each year. Nearly 80 pct of the tonnage shipped out of the region is handled by nine railroads, which depend on this traffic for a large part of their revenue. It follows that the economic health and the very existence 0: this industry is of real concern not only to the region itself but also to the state of Pennsylvania and the country as a whole. Anthracite mining is one of the oldest mineral industries in America. About 1760 burning rock or stone coal was discovered on the hillsides of northeastern Pennsylvania. Within a few years a systematic search for coal bed outcrops was under way, and hand mining was begun. At first production was very limited, since anthracite was difficult to burn and was not readily accepted as a fuel. Pennsylvania anthracite is one of the densest and hardest of all coals, and its content of volatile matter is low. Consequently it does not ignite easily and it burns without smoke. About 1808 Judge Fell of Wilkes-Barre burned anthracite in an open grate fireplace and demonstrated proper handling of an anthracite fire. From

Mining of sand in South Africa is rapidly growing to sustain an increasing demand for sand for building purposes. Although mining of sand is regulated by environmental legislation, such as the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 19981, previous bad mining practices have left areas of land degraded and vulnerable to erosion. This study was conducted in the Seringveld Conservancy, where mining of sand has left the landscape with a degraded and unsightly appearance, and where little rehabilitation of the original vegetation has taken place. The aim of the study was to develop rehabilitation techniques for the degraded mined soils on two sand mines, Boekenhout Sand and Krokodil Sand, and to develop an overall strategy of revegetation by regenerating key plant species. Techniques for regenerating indigenous tree species cover, using modified mined sludge if topsoil is not available, were used to develop a practical and cost-effective strategy to be used in revegetation. A comparative trial was used to cultivate indigenous tree species in different soil mixtures. The study is important as it provides new information on the rehabilitation and revegetation of sand mined areas in the Seringveld Conservancy. This study will determine if alternatives could be used to replace topsoil on mined areas where none is available. The study is needed to determine whether revegetation of the mined areas would be possible using indigenous plant species that are difficult to grow. The overall results indicate that replacing topsoil was successful for various modified soil mixtures that could sustain the growth of indigenous vegetation on the sand mines. Different indigenous tree species require different modified soil mixtures for successful propagation. A revegetation strategy was developed to complement and enable the rehabilitation of the mined areas in the Seringveld Conservancy. ON the 22d of November, „1879, white iron unexpectedly appeared while working the Cedar Point Furnace, Port Henry, N Y., on the following burden, calculated to turn out mill and foundry iron: Anthracite coal, - 3000 pounds. Connellsville coke, - 1500 pounds. Total, - 4500 pounds. Old Bed ore, - 3750 pounds. New Bed fine ore, - 2000 pounds. New Bed chunk ore, - 1000 pounds. Kearnev hematite ore, - 750 pounds. Total, - 7500 pounds. Magnesian limestone, - 1865 pounds. Common limestone, - 885 pounds. Total, - 2500 pounds. The production per week since making mill iron-from September 1st, 1879, to date, seven weeks-was 412 gross tons. Ore was not immediately taken off, as nothing serious was looked for. The iron for the next week graded from No. 4 to white, and in. six days the make was 274 1/2 tons. At 10 P.M., Friday, the 28th, a slip of-..4 feet occurred, and on Saturday, at 5 A.M., another of 3 feet on the south side and. 7- feet on the north side took place. At this time it was found that the south side had been hanging for over a week--a fact which had not been reported. Throwing off the wind, to produce slips. and reduce pressure, had been tried with no effect. The stock, as seen through the tuyeres, seemed to consist almost entirely of coal, with just enough infusible cinder to cement it into a mass through which the blast could not be forced. "Upon successful completion of the AG/SAG Mill project (Cooper et al., 2001) the Brunswick Mine concentrator was configured with single line processing through the AG/SAG mill, followed by two parallel ball mill and flotation circuits. The Stage Grinding project was undertaken to utilize a pre-flotation stage on the AG/SAG mill primary cyclone overflow and simplify the flowsheet by consolidating the two ball mill and flotation circuits, resulting in single line processing fi-om AG/SAG mill to final concentrate. Concurrently, the reclaim water supply capacity was increased to enable flotation cleaning at lower percent solids.Benefits from the Stage Grinding project include revenue enhancement from increased zinc grade and recovery combined with additional lead recovery. Further benefits included a reduction in the number of process pumps, reduction in loss associated with spillage to sumps and process simplification through efficient use of equipment layout.The Stage Grinding project was implemented in six phases over a period of seven months in 2000. Each phase was commissioned during scheduled concentrator shopdays with minimal additional downtime required. One year after project approval the Stage Grinding project was completed at a total cost of $1 1.8 million.INTRODUCTIONThe Noranda Inc. Brunswick Mine, located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, is one of the world’s largest leadzinc mines. Milling of ore began in 1964 from the No. 12 orebody, with an expansion in 1966 to accommodate ore fkom the No. 6 open pit located several kilometers away. In 1980 the pit was exhausted and the concentrator rationalized to accept a design feed rate of 10,500 tomes per day from the No. 12 mine. In excess of 100 million tomes have been milled to date, representing over three-quarters of the known reserve. The concentrator employs differential froth flotation to produce lead, zinc, copper and leauzinc bulk concentrates. The ore is massive sulphide, with approximately 20% valuable minerals, 60% pyrite and 20% silicates."

MR. McCLURE: Mr. Chairman, you sprang a surprise on me; I really came over here for a good time. Gentlemen, I am not at all qualified to pose as an expert on pulverized fuel; I have merely been making some rather interesting observations, and unfortunately at the present time, a great deal of substantial data, the technical data, I don't happen to have with me; it is still in the process of being calculated, but I will be very glad to tell you some of the observations as I have made them, and in as truthful and complete a way as I can. The question of how we would handle fuel became a very pressing subject in this new Valmont electric plant, which is now under progress. We have studied the methods of burning fuel for a number of years on different types of stokers at the existing plants in Denver; we are burning it with a natural draft chain grate and with underfeed and with forced draft chain grates, and I am very frank to confess at the present time that I have no answer as far as stokers are concerned for a better solution of the problem of burning lignite. In other words, I could not tell you that this or that is a better type of stoker to use for that coal. However, to boil the thing down, after considerable trials, the underfed stoker was chosen as the one most adaptable for the utilizing of lignite fuel if stokers are to be used. In other words, the chain grate was put aside. I might say in support of the chain grate, the prime reason for which that type of stoker was condemned, as far as lignite goes, is the initial investment charge and the large maintenance which is involved.

Deep-seated human instincts urge us to positively mark the passage of time. We celebrate the passage of each year. Years give way to decades, and decades to half centuries and centuries. At all these mileposts we are inclined to pause, take a look around and catch our breaths before embarking on the next leg. We are at such a point now and this meeting I am sure will give direction to the road ahead into the decade of the seventies. In looking around at this point, 1979, it is obvious to all of us that the environment in which we must mine, mill, smelt and refine lead and zinc has radically changed. These changes have, of course, occurred over a long period of time. They have, however, all been in the same general direction. They have all had the same motivation. The period of greatest contrast is probably the fifteen years just before World War II and the fifteen years following the end of that war. I thought that I might review briefly with you what seems to me to be four of the more important changes that have developed since World War II that profoundly affect our activities in the lead and zinc industry. I mentioned before that all these changes have been in the same direction; that is, they have all tended to restrict our freedom of action in pursuing our objective of producing lead and zinc on a competitive basis at a profit. Consequently, in discussing them you may think that I am merely viewing with alarm. This is not the intent. This is merely supposed to be an objective analysis. I think it appropriate before discussing these trends in detail to examine the position of lead and zinc today.

The Genesis gold mine, owned and operated by Newmont Gold Co., is located in section 31, T36N, R50E within Eureka County, Nevada along the Carlin Trend of sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposits. Mining commenced in 1986 with present mineable and stockpiled reserves listed at 17,711,000 tons of ore averaging 0.073 opt Au, totalling 1.292 million ounces of gold. Ore is primarily hosted within Devonian calcareous siltstones that have been subjected to intensive argillization and silicification episodes. Additional mineralogic and geochemical features of the Genesis ores include enrichment in iron-oxides, kaolinite, arsenic and antimony; the ore zone is relatively depleted in carbonates and sulfides as a result of supergene and hypogene oxidation. Two major structural zones enhanced the permeability of the siltstones and served as the main hydrothermal conduits within the deposit. Prior to the main ore stage, the host rocks were subjected to metasomatic effects caused by emplacement of the Juro-Cretaceous Goldstrike granodiorite pluton and associated dikes and sills. Micron-size gold occurs in clays, micro-crystalline quartz, and in arsenical complexes. Non-oxidized carbonaceous and sulfidic ores and silica-locked ores result in variable preg-robbing and refractory responses during cyanide recovery. Selective mining and milling has resulted in the successful treatment of the Genesis orebody.

Monazite is one of the minerals which, for a long time, was considered somewhat rare in its occurrence, but, upon a commercial demand arising for it, prospectors and engineers soon located large deposits of it in the Carolinas arid Brazil, and the supply has always been able to meet the demand. During 1908 further sources of supply of monazite have been discovered and developed in Idaho. North and South Carolina, however, are the only States that have thus far put any monazite on the market. Monazite is essentially an anhydrous phosphate of the rare-earth metals,ceriunl, lanthanum, and didymium,(Ce,La,Di)PO,. There is nearly always present a varying but small percentage of thoria, Tho2, and silicic acid, SiO2,, which are very probably united in the form of a thorium silicate, ThSiO4. Some mona-zites contain but a fraction of a per cent. of thoria, while others have been recorded that showed the presence of from 18 to 32 per cent.; but the majority contain from 3 to 9 per cent. of this oxide. It is the presence of the thorium oxide that gives the monazite its commercial value. The analysis occasionally shows also the presence of other constituents, as the yttrium and erbium oxides, zirconia, alumina, magnesia, lime, iron oxides, manganese oxide, and titanium oxide. Monazite is light-yellow, honey-yellow, reddish-, brownish-, or greenish-yellop. in color, with a resinous to vitreous luster, and is translucent to subtransparent. It is brittle, with a con-choidal to uneven fracture, and is from 5 to 5.5 in hardness, and from 4.64 to 5.3 in specific gravity. Opencast coal mining is responsible for the greatest area of land disturbance across all of the commodity types in South Africa. Many thousands of hectares have been rehabilitated to date and, although rehabilitation performance is not always measured or reported, a significant database, spanning 24 years, has now been analysed to identify the main shortcomings holding back rehabilitation sustainability across the industry. Data from 48 different collieries with rehabilitation performance scores measured from 2000-2024 were analysed. A standardised assessment framework was implemented at all 48 collieries, focusing on aspects of land capability, soil fertility, landscape form and drainage, vegetation species composition and basal cover, implementation of maintenance programmes, and prevalence of invasive alien plants. The findings show that, although invasive species management, plant species composition, and plant basal cover are often adequate, the implementation of aftercare and maintenance programmes (influencing soil fertility) and deficiencies in overall landform design and drainage systems are most significant in preventing overall rehabilitation progression and self-sustainability. Integrating these during design and rehabilitation execution, followed by intensive maintenance (especially in the first five years post-topsoiling and seeding) will be key for the overall industry performance to improve to acceptable levels. The database is biased towards collieries that actually do undertake rehabilitation and that do measure it, hence the actual industry performance is likely worse than what is presented. Due to the substantial hectarages involved and the main post-mining land uses being grazing and crop production, the industry cannot afford to keep perpetuating deficiencies in achieving the foundational aspects of rehabilitation that would pave the way for sustained economic future use.

The drilling at the Taum Sauk Reservoir was a unique compilation of the latest technology and everyday common sense. This site is comprised of rhyolite, which is 30 times harder than limestone in comparison. Using some of the most state of the art drills, coupled with GPS guidance, angular drilling systems, and an ordinary piece of string, some of the most amazing drilling feats were accomplished. By constructing the new dam on top of a mountain that had been blasted once before nearly 50 years ago treacherous conditions for the drills and crew were a challenge. The drills had to be flown in by cranes to get to their locations, where they then drilled anywhere from 2.5 to 6 inch (6.4 to 15.2 cm) holes at angles up to 24.4 degrees. Custom drill bits were designed by the drilling crew to tackle feats such as drilling holes up to 120 feet (36.6 m) deep. A main challenge was the shape of the reservoir, as it is not in a straight line, but rather round, so no technological way was readily available to use to drill. Common sense came in and an ordinary piece of string was used to aide in drilling the hole. A revolutionary step was that our drill was used to core our own samples. By using our own equipment, we were able to complete this task for one-third of the cost of having a third party contractor obtain the core samples. On this unmatched jobsite, it has been established that technology has come a long way, but when all else fails, a piece of string will do just fine.

"This paper provides an overview of the use of uranium and coal in Ontario Hydro's generation program. The dynamics of available supply sources including mining and transportation infrastructures and regional considerations are described. Included is a discussion of needed procurement strategies, both in place and planned, to meet fluctuating fuel requirements while ensuring adequate supply security and cost effectiveness. IntroductionDuring the first half of this century, Ontario Hydro or the Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario, as it was then known substantially supplied all of the province's electricity needs from a large number of hydraulic generating stations. Although hydraulic power still provides a very significant part of Ontario energy requirements, this paper will concentrate on the role of uranium and coal in their generation program. To provide a perspective on the importance of these two fuels, Figure I shows the approximate value of each for the past few years in relation to Hydro's total operating costs. The trend toward increasing nuclear output and a corresponding decline in coal use is also clearly illustrated.Figure 2 shows the currently installed capacity of their three main energy sources, hydraulic, nuclear and coal and the 1986 production totals for each, followed by Table I which compares the average operating or running cost on the basis of dollars per megawatt hour for each type of plant. It demonstrates dramatically why Ontario Hydro base load s its hydraulic and nuclear plants, and why coal has become the swing fuel on the system. Although they have a 1200 megawatt plant in Toronto with natural gas-burning capability, and a 2000 megawatt oil-fired station near Kingston, both are presently mothballed and have not been considered in this paper.This paper starts with a user's perspective of the nuclear fuel supply situation which will be discussed in relation to the usual considerations of security, flexibility and cost."
