In this paper, the nature of the gold cyanide adsorption phenomenon is investigated, particularly with respect to carbon substrates and associated surface adsorp- tion sites.

INTRODUCTION Conceptual design of the first Exploratory Shaft (ES-I) for the Nuclear Waste Repository in Basalt (NWRB) began in July 1981; detailed design began in February 1982, and was largely completed by December (RKE/PB, 1983). The intent was to begin shaft construction by January 1983. The site had been prepared at that time, a construction manager selected and on board, the starter hole excavated and lined, and steel casings were under procurement. Government policy changed, however, and construction was halted before the drill rig started turning. Construction is now planned to begin in 1988. ES-I is a part of the site characterization program for the NWRB. The shaft will be used to develop production data and related information relative to drilling shafts at the site near Richland, WA, and to provide access to the repository horizon for site characterization and testing. The early program called for one shaft and some 330 m (1000 ft) of drifting. The program has since expanded to include a second shaft (ES-II) and more extensive drifting and testing. Currently, both shafts are planned to be 1.8 m (6 ft) in finished diameter, but studies are underway to determine if the second shaft should be larger. The drilling method was selected for shaft construction primarily because it offered a significantly shorter construction period than conventional shaft sinking using freezing and grouting. This paper describes the controlled blasting techniques required to mine a rock tunnel section of a main interceptor located in the Boston Metropolitan area. The 3m (10 ft) x 2.8m (9.25 ft) horseshoe shaped tunnel was driven 490m (1600 ft) by conventional drill and blast methods. The geology varied round by round and consisted of five highly faulted and jointed igneous rock types. The tunnel intersected numerous slickenslides and open mud seams which hampered both drilling and loading operations. Smooth blasting wee critical in order to keep overbreak tc a minimum in this extremely hard but blocky ground.

The Apex Tunnel is part of the Southern Nevada Water Authority?s proposed Clark, Lincoln, and White Pine Counties Groundwater Development Project. The project is intended to develop unused Nevada groundwater for meeting the water needs of Southern Nevada and would involve over 322 km (200 mi) of water transmission facilities. The Apex Tunnel, as currently conceived by ongoing planning and environmental analyses, would extend 2804 m (9,200 ft) through a structurally complex terrain of Paleozoic carbonate rocks and younger basin fill deposits and will traverse both public and private lands. Several faults cross the tunnel study area, juxtaposing rocks of varying lithology and degree of folding, and creating intervals of differing rock conditions along the tunnel alignment. This paper discusses how the geotechnical program was developed to be flexible and allow for rapid implementation of revisions based on new knowledge that became available during program execution, resulting in more effective decision making and enhanced value from the geologic investigation during the planning phase of the project.

Gold deportment and ore characterisation studies are key tools in gaining an appropriate understanding of complex gold ores for process development and optimisation. These studies have historically involved imprecise chemical methods with slow and costly optical microscopy for gold identification. The traditional approach requires highly skilled petrographers, is prone to human error, and is not scalable, reducing the usefulness in practical analysis. The proposed methodology utilises a decision tree and knowledge base in a staged approach to gold ore characterisation, building up progressively more detailed information about the sample mineralogy, gold deportment and key mineral properties, as the process is followed. Whilst the automated QEMSCAN« system is used for mineral and gold identification, interactive and focused data analyses are used to give more efficient and accurate results. This is complemented by smart sample preparation and chemical methods to enhance and validate the data, making the staged approach methodology reliable, scalable and therefore practical and economical.

A satisfactory well-cementing composition must retain its fluidity long enough to be pumped into Place; then it must develop within a reasonable length of time sufficient strength and impermeability to anchor the casing in position and to form an effective seal between the casing and the formations. These properties may be evaluated by pumpability, strength (compressive or tensile), and permeability tests. Laboratory test procedures for the determination of pumpability time and strength development have been outlined previously and are readily available,1 but a satisfactory and convenient laboratory procedure for the measurement of the permeability of set cement has not been developed heretofore. some permeability data have been obtained previously by passing air through dried cement specimens.2 such a procedure is unsatisfactory because the drying of set cement alters it physical and chemical properties and subjects it to conditions dissimilar to well conditions. Impacts of mining on surface water and groundwater occur frequently not only in active mines but in abandoned mines, then the establishment of effective legal mechanisms for the regulation and control of mine waters is a necessary step in order to avoid pollution from mine waters and in consequence to contribute for a sustainable development of the mining industry. Currently there is a lack of a specific European legislation about mine waters and this absence of legislation occurs too at national level in many European countries. This absence of an European specific regulatory framework for mine water pollution questions the effectiveness and the applicability of the current legislation and this fact has led the EC to put forward proposals legislation to adequately deal with environmental and social consequences of mining, and among those proposals is a draft for a directive on waste from the extractive industry that includes provisions for mine water pollution.

Underground openings resulting from coal mining activities have been a serious cause of subsidence problems in the Warrior coalfield of Alabama, which is the 11th largest coal-producing state in the United States (National Coal Association, 1986). The problem will be even more serious in the future because 17 Gt (19 billion st) of Alabama's 22 Gt (24 billion st) of coal reserves are classified as an under- ground resource (Tolson et al., 1982). Subsidence data in this area has been scarce com- pared with other coalfields (Conroy, 1980; Dunrud and Osterwald, 1980; Gentry and Able, 1978; Hunt, 1979; King and Gentry, 1979). This paper discusses the results of a study of subsidence overlying two longwall mines that contrast each other. One of them (Mine #1) is a shallow longwall mine where the coal strength is very high, and the other mine (Mine #2) is extremely deep with a low strength of coal.

In September last I had my attention called by Mr. R. G. Leckie to a deposit of nickel in the township of Orford, province of Quebec. In many ways it has proved to be a subject of great interest. As this ore is, as far as I can learn, entirely new in mineralogy and metallurgy, it has seemed to me that it would be a matter of interest to the Institute to have laid before it, in a short paper, the peculiarities I have met with in studying it. This deposit of nickel was first described by Dr. T. The production of oxygen on the Moon utilizing indigenous materials will be essential for successful lunar colonization. Several processes have been put forth to accomplish Lunar Liquid Oxygen (LLOX) generation. The schemes that have received the most study to date involve: 1) Reduction of ilmenite (FeTi03) by H2, CO, CH4, CO-Cl2 and Cl2, plasma. 2) Molten silicate electrolysis, both unadulterated and fluoride fluxed. 3) Several others, including H, reduction of glass, carbo-chlorination, HF acid leaching, fluorine extraction, magma oxidation, and vapor pyrolysis. The H2 reduction of ilmenite and molten silicate electrolysis processes have received the most study to date. They are both feasible schemes and have various pros and cons, including their feedstock requirements. However, all processes should be addressed at the onset of LLOX research. This paper reviews several of the most studied and feasible processes for winning oxygen front lunar materials. There is an obvious need for more experimentation and study.

During the last decade it has been established that conventional mineral-processing control strategies based on classical control theory result in significant increases in plant throughput and operating-cost savings. It has, however, also been recognized that conventional strategies have important limitations for complex multivariable mineral-processing systems. These limitations center around the fact that single-input/single- output control linkings often result in highly undesirable interactions between controllers. During the last few years new and promising approaches to solving this problem have emerged. These approaches are based on the use of on-line dynamic models to make predictions which are useful for control decision-making. This paper presents a brief summary of the state-of-the-art for mineral-processing control in 1984. This summary is followed by a review of recent developments in model-based control strategies including those in optimal control, self- tuning regulators and decoupling control. Expected trends for the future in the control of mineral-processing operations are discussed.

Maintaining and improving the economics of open pit mining in the future requires understanding of the characteristics of open pit mining that are different to other mining or business activities, designing mines in the first place to be less susceptible to changes in these important characteristics, and adopting strategies which yield reliable returns despite unforeseen change. Planning and production personnel require guidelines and performance standards that are based on sound economics not solely on production criteria. The guidelines adopted for long-term implementation must assume a declining price for mineral products along with declining real costs, with research efforts directed at development of both evolutionary and revolutionary ideas aimed at implementation. Decision-making must focus on risk and probability criteria rather than just simple return-on-investment criteria, and the approach for management of personnel must support the higher level of communication essential for fast decision-making in the new environment of continual change.

Measurements of radon in air and aqueous solutions can be affected by leakage from vessels in which samples and standards are kept and by absorption and later release of radon by the materials of these vessels. The author had received various oral communications concerning the se processes : e.g ., that natural rubber and greases absorb large amounts of radon, whereas silicone rubber and grease do not; and that radon is readily lost from polyethylene bottles and that inverting glass bottles containing aqueous samples reduced radon loss from them . However, the results of actual tests and quantitative data showing these effects were not available. For this reason, it was necessary to make numerous measurements of the leakage and absorption of radon in the course of designing apparatus and methods for measuring radium and radon concentrations. It was thought that the data obtained might be of use to others, and consequently they are compiled in the present note .

The wireline sampling originates from core drilling in rocks. The authors combined the wireline sampling technique with conventional undisturbed soil samplers, including Osterberg sampler, Denison sampler and double tube barrel, and then developed the wireline samplers of WPS, WSS and WSR models. These samplers are able to sample various soils. They reserve all the advantages of the original samplers, and moreover, they are noted with quick hoisting and lowering by wire rope. Therefore, it becomes an efficient new technique of sampling undisturbed soil from deep foundation.

SYNOPSIS This paper traces the developments in flotation practice at Anglovaal's Prieska Copper Mine, with em¬phasis on the depression/deactivation of lead and zinc. A depressant system was devised to accept feed material that was once regarded as untreatable. Of particular interest is the long-term downward trend of concentrator working costs in real terms. This trend follows the classic Experience Curve, which relates production costs to cumulative experience. It is felt that the experience-curve concept has important implications for the mining industry in general.

The large diameter blastholes now being used in underground mining have caused concern because of their increased potential for damaging openings and creating rockfall hazards. In response to this situation, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to reduce the amount of overbreak and damage to the perimeter of underground openings. This paper presents the results of tests with decoupled charges in 6.5 inch diameter blastholes, and unloaded guide holes, in Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) stope panels at the Homestake underground gold mine in Lead, SD.
