The Bureau of Mines has successfully developed and tested a machine for spraying sealant onto coal mine roof and ribs. Dry material is transported pneumatically to a water-adding nozzle designed to provide dust-free spraying while being nonplugging and self-cleaning. The machine is self-cleaning, 35 inches in height, and capable of applying l/2-inch-thick coatings at over 1,000 ft2/hr.

"The valuation of mineral properties in the U.S. is only partially regulated. The regulations which have jurisdiction or impact appear to have such mainly as a consequence of unintended fallout, since the regulations were designed for other purposes. Court case history can also be important. The combined results are a mixture of bad and good, with important lessons to be learned.Since 1981, the Securities and Exchange Commission has prohibited U.S. listed companies from reporting quantitative estimates of mineralization and the value of mineralization, other than proven and probable reserves. This results in the minerals appraiser (valuator) working with a shortage of data in his everyday work, both on the subject property and in sales analysis.Between 1989 and 1995, all 50 states and essentially all Federal agencies adopted the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) for real property appraisals (valuations). The major national appraisal societies also require their members to abide by USPAP. A significant portion of minerals appraisals must now follow these standards. This paper will discuss the content of USPAP. It provides a very good framework for the valuation of a minerals property or a mine, both as real property and as a business. However, the credentialing standards for real property appraisers are now prohibitive for minerals appraisers."

EXPERIENCE has shown how difficult it is to obtain information regarding laboratory-tests in connection with the chlorination-process for the extraction of gold from its ores, and I therefore present the following method, somewhat in detail, for the benefit of those who may desire to pursue research work in this field. The ore chosen was a partly-decomposed porphyry, extremely siliceous and comparatively soft, and of an average value per ton of from $25 to $26 in gold and $0.68 in silver. The chemical analysis gave : Fe2O3, 3.35; FeS, 1.5; MnO2, 0.75; ZnCO3, 4; Al2O3, 3.20; H2O, 0.7; SiO2 and insol., 83.50 per cent. The ore, first crushed to pass a 5-mesh screen, was coned and quartered until a 45-lb. sample was obtained. Samples for assay and analysis, taken from this lot by means of riffles, were crushed to pass a 100-mesh screen. The original sample was divided into 10-lb. lots, of which one was crushed to pass a 10-mesh screen; another through a 12-; the third through a 20-, .and the last through a 30-mesh screen. Because of the production of an excessive quantity of fine material it was deemed inexpedient to crush finer than 30-mesh size-a decision the wisdom of which is proved by the data in Table I., showing the increasing ratio of slimes, in proportion as the ore is crushed finer. In order to determine the percentage of fines in the sizes of mesh selected, a weighed sample of ore was taken from each mesh, and a sample from the 10-mesh lot was passed successively through 20-, 40- and 100-mesh screens, and the percentage remaining on each screen determined. This process was repeated with the 12-, 20- and 30-mesh lots, with the results given in Table I.

A PAPER on "Iron and Steel Scrap in Blast-fur-nace Burdens," by W. C. McKee, general super-intendent, Federal Furnace plant, By-Products Coke Corp., Chicago, was published in the October issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, and written discussion by Richard Moldenke was published in the December issue. Following is the stenographic report of the oral discus-sion that took place when this paper was presented at Pittsburgh. J. N. REESE, Monessen, Pa.-I came to the conclusion that Mr. McKee must be using a poor grade of scrap, therefore his loss was high. Mr. Franchot said that there was ex-cess heat in the stack. There is no excess heat in the hearth, therefore, any heat that is used to melt this scrap must come from the stack. By using scrap in a blast furnace you can utilize this excess heat in the stack. The amount of scrap that can be used in any particular furnace involves a direct relation to the efficiency of that furnace. If a furnace is running on a very low-coke rate, you will not be able to use much; if on a high-coke rate, you can use considerable scrap, probably several times as much as that mentioned in these papers-without using any additional coke. This excess heat can be utilized with-out practically any serious mechanical and operating diffi-culties such as might be occasioned by removing gas from a point other than the top of the furnace. I do not think, scrap has any effect on the iron, although I think some foundrymen are trying to prove that it has, and perhaps some open-hearth men may have that idea.

Steel production process generates waste, among which is the electric arc furnace dust (EAFD). This waste has varying amounts of zinc, which is principally contained in the minerals zincite (ZnO) and franklinite (Fe2ZnO4). The presence of Zn is capable of economically motivating the recycling of this residue and facilitating the co-processing of the remaining material. The zinc content in EAFD and the presence of zincite, however, have significant influence on the application of hydrometallurgical recovery processes (economic alternatives to the Waelz process). In this study, based on the computational thermodynamic tool FactSage, theoretical considerations are made on the conditions for the formation of zinc-containing minerals found in EAFD. Through thermodynamic analysis, the best conditions for obtaining a high fraction of ZnO were analyzed, which favor the hydrometallurgical processes for EAFD treatment. A classification of dust depending on the phases present in the EAFD is suggested as a guide for the feasibility analysis for the use of a hydrometallurgical process.

Sulfide-ore concentrates containing cobalt, nickel, copper, lead, and iron from the operations of the National Lead Co. at. Fredericktown, Mo., were treated successfully on a laboratory scale to recover more than 90 percent of the cobalt, nickel, and copper. A cobalt -nickel-bearing, lead-copper matte., produced by the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Herculaneum, Mo., was treated to produce a lead-zinc fume, a copper sulfide concentrate, and a cobalt nickel-iron product, netting a recovery of over 75 percent of the cobalt and about 90 percent of the nickel and copper. National Lead Co. bulk concentrates were chlorinated with gaseous chlorine to form anhydrous metal chlorides and sulfur chlorides, sulfur chlorides were recovered by distillation, a high percentage of the ferric chloride was converted to ferric oxide, and the chlorinated residual metals were extracted with water. Metal ions were removed from leach liquors by pH-controlled fractional precipitation as hydroxides. Cobalt solutions "were prepared from cobaltic hydroxide, and procedures were developed to remove contaminating metal ions. Purified cobalt solutions were employed as electrolytes for deposition of high-purity cobalt.

"Very little is known about the large scale fluid dynamics and associated distribution of copper in an operating electrowinning cell, yet they will have a major influence on mass transfer and plating quality. The CFD model in this work is used to simulate an entire EW cell with 60 cathodes and 61 anodes, or 121 anode–cathode pairs, elucidating for the first time the three-dimensional (3D) flow and copper distribution in an industrial cell. Two methods for the distribution of electrolyte are modelled:1. Downcomer method: electrolyte is fed by a downcomer at one end of the cell, overflowing at the opposite end.2. Manifold method: a horizontal manifold pipe runs the whole length of the cell and feeds electrolyte via small holes in the top of the manifold pipe.The recirculation that develops within each anode-cathode pair, driven by oxygen bubble generation on the anode, is similar to that seen previously in two-dimensional models of single anode–cathode gaps. However a more complex 3D flow recirculation is established, which involves flow of electrolyte down the side gaps (being a path of low resistance for return flow) as well as the usual return flow down the cathode side of each pair gap. The bubble-driven flow is not influenced by the mode of electrolyte distribution.The electrolyte flow due to the manifold and downcomer is somewhat secondary to the bubble driven flow. In the case of the downcomer distribution mode, the high injection velocity causes a very turbulent flow in the first 1–2 m down the cell from the downcomer, with several large vortices developing. This may lead to some sludge particles being entrained into the bulk of the cell.In the manifold pipe case, the jet from each hole is dissipated very quickly, within the first 10–20 cm. The jets are directed into the downward flowing zone of the bubble-driven recirculation, which leads to unstable and periodic behaviour on a large spatial scale.In both the manifold and downcomer cases, there is a marked two-zone vertical stratification in copper concentration."

A new sense of urgency permeates the mining industry concerning maintenance. Mining's continuous process environment demands around-the-clock maintenance support. And profitability conscious mining operations require that production targets be met on time - and economically. These goals require nothing less than an effective maintenance program. In turn, the effectiveness of the maintenance program depends on quality information: easily procured, complete, timely, accurate, and properly used. Information picture is changing Some of the fully integrated, mainframe maintenance information pro¬grams of better days remain. Their upkeep and cost of operation, though, is becoming more difficult to justify. Some operations, faced with production cutbacks a few years ago, downscaled and found they liked it. Now, during an upswing, these operations question the need for the more elaborate, administrative-heavy programs they used to operate. Package programs are not taking their place. Too often, the packages are vague and generic. Some vendors claim that if their offerings work in a hospital complex, they must work in an underground mine. That is not so. Maintenance information in the mining industry is different. The situation has changed There are now smaller, self-contained maintenance groups whose information needs are different. These include an electrical crew in a smelter, an underground mobile equipment shop, or a remote service shop between several distant operating pits. These working environments have changed the character of the information needed as well as the methods for obtaining and using it. Operations-maintenance link In coming back from a downturn, operations people realize that their ability to meet production targets hinges on reliable equipment and avoidance of downtime. They have become familiar with the need to use maintenance services effectively. They also want quality maintenance information. When coupled with the sense of urgency about maintenance, a business-like working environment emerges that has significant new differences in both work control and information. Work control impact Work control has been streamlined to improve communications. Supporting information has been streamlined as well. • Verbal orders are the rule rather than the exception to quickly bring a multi-craft crew to the flotation section or a pit crew to a disabled haulage truck. • Written work requests and work order forms are seldom used, or even needed. Rather, electronic work control logs permit operations to request work, maintenance to acknowledge it, get ready, and do it - quickly, without delay. • Routine servicing is triggered by operating hour accumulation (mobile equipment) or tons of throughput (fixed equipment). Operations is now taking the initiative in delivering mobile equip¬ment to the "bad order line," or switching to a bypass conveyor. Toward the end of 1920 , the average grades of ground feldspar offered to the pottery industry were so poor and so generally unsatisfactory that many of the largest consumers decided to take active steps for their own protection . A few of the potters made arrangements to grind their own feldspar , while others asked the Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of the problem and to suggest methods of improvement . Accordingly such a study was undertaken, the partial results of which are outlined in this preliminary report . The outstanding features of the present feldspar industry which are of interest in this connection are stated below. (1 ) Many grinding companies do not own or control all or even a major part of their sources of crude material , but buy in job lots from many sources . (2 ) There is great need of more adequate engineering and chemical control over mines and mills . ( 3) ~ Out of date , inefficient methods and equipment for mining and grinding are in common use . (4) Little or no cooperation exists between feldspar producers , but on the contrary many feldspar companies are exceedingly secretive . This tends towards (a) preservation of obsolete methods ; ( b ) want of knowledge of the essential features of production , market requirements , and the relation between total milling and consuming capacities of the country; ( c ) inefficient and often mistaken trade practices ; ( d) unprofitable and even ruinous competition in dull periods . (5) The small size of many feldspar deposits precludes maintenance of an efficient organization at each individual mine . ( 6 ) Many of the best deposits of feldspar situated close to railroads are becoming depleted , which results in gradual lowering of grades , and increase in cost for better grades . (7) There is a lack of exact mowledge of the ceramic properties and behaviour of feldspar by some consumers , which results in ( a) purchase of feldspar on the basis of price alone , thus encouraging low production costs at the expense of quality , and ( b) inefficient and expensive cross- hauling of both crude and ground feldspar .

The Atlanta Plane Train Tunnel West Extension was excavated at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport using Sequential Excavation Methods (SEM). At its shallowest point, tunnel cover to bottom of Domestic Terminal footings was limited to 6 feet in soft ground. To mitigate risk of excessive building movement due to tunneling-related activities, the columns near the alignment were directly underpinned. Underpinning was accomplished using a combination of grouted mini-piles, installed under low headroom conditions, that supported steel framing spanning over the tunnel excavations. This paper focuses on design and construction of the underpinning system used to mitigate risk from tunneling.

Mine safety personnel reported occurrences of excessive "glove-fingering" and other problems with resin-grouted roof bolt installa tions. To study these problems, the Bureau of Mines designed a test plan to (1) obtain baseline information on several resin cartridges and (2) investigate the variables involved in the installation of a resin bolt. Three brands of resin representative of the industry in January 1983 were selected for cartridge evaluation. The installation variables selected for study were the method of installation, the hole depth, and the hole annulus. These variables were studied by installing a series of bolts in concrete blocks using different values for each variable. Results of the research show overspinning the resin may cause problems, but they can be avoided by using the spin times recommended by manufac-turers. Excessive glove-fingering is not a problem if the manufacturer-recommended installation procedures are followed.

The paper deals with the problem of refractory gold-containing material processing. It is observed that all traditional methods for liberation of fine gold from this type of products are characterized by a number of essential disadvantages, where the main ones are ? considerable expenses for ore processing and big environmental impact. As an alternative to the existing methods there is considered a gold liberation method, which is based on the combination of ultra fine grinding process with the consequent atmospheric oxidation. The theoretical justification of atmospheric oxidation was carried out, in the result of this the mechanism and the degree of sulphide minerals? oxidation was found out, the dependence of gold dissolution speed on the slurry content in liquid phase produced by grinding and oxidation was identified. The experimental data and results of pilot-plant testing are given and the most effective grinding and atmospheric oxidation mode is selected on this basis. The performed complex of research works allowed us to use the provided technology at the gold processing plant having capacity of 8 mln. tons of ore per year. The questions, problems, advantages and disadvantages of atmospheric oxidation technology for refractory gold-containing concentrates are considered in this paper. The principal objective of Geotechnical Engineers supporting operating mines is to provide safe working conditions and ensure that pit designs are geotechnically optimised to site conditions and pre-defined stability requirements. Pit slope designs are delivered in advance of pit excavations. Making changes to these designs is usually slow to enact and involves a layered sign-off before implementation, leading to unwanted delays in their adoption and subsequently increased production pressures. When unexpected ground conditions are encountered during the mining process, or short-term mining schedule requirements demand it, changes to these designs may not be easily feasible in certain situations. It is when these scenarios arise that Geotechnical Engineers need to be proactive and consider unconventional options to deliver safe operating conditions while satisfying short-term requirements to the mine schedule. Essentially, the geotechnical short-term strategic designs double-pronged approach supports the mine schedule while providing safe conditions and minimising geotechnical risks for people and equipment. Common short-term strategic geotechnical designs include; slope buttressing, over-steepening cut slopes to increase reserve recovery through unplanned or emergency cutbacks, and accepting risk threat and operating under unstable slopes. When implementing strategic design options, the Geotechnical Engineer must consider the broader implications for such designs. They must think of the plan’s long-term effects on the mine schedule and pit wall stability. Initiating aggressive designs to recover additional reserves to satisfy a short-term scheduling demand could result in-pit wall instability or suboptimal pit layout. Before and during the implementation phase, the Geotechnical Engineer must communicate and engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the plan is executed accordingly and geotechnical risks are effectively managed. Proactiveness to ground response and implementation of risk management strategies will improve safety performance and optimise mining schedules.

A series of experiments in the U.S. Bureau of Mines Safety Research Coal Mine at the Pittsburgh Research Center evaluated the effects of crosscuts on the travel time of carbon monoxide (CO) along an entry to improve the accuracy of a mine-fire locator program. Three entries, ten single crosscuts, and three double crosscuts were instrumented with CO sensors. One-percent CO in nitrogen was released and monitored as it traveled the entries. In addition to dispersion of CO at the front of the CO wave, CO was entrained from the entry into the crosscuts. It was determined for an entry and single-crosscut configuration that the measured travel time for a concentration change of 5 ppm was 27% greater than the predicted time based upon entry volume only, but 13% less than the predicted time based upon entry and crosscut volumes. For an entry and double-crosscut configuration, the measured travel time for the same concentration change was 25% greater than the predicted time based upon entry volume only, but 10% less than the predicted time based upon entry and crosscut volumes. An effective dispersion coefficient for CO dispersion along one of the entries was estimated to be 1.5 m2/ s.

United States metals and non-metallic minerals manufacturing consume about 5,000 trillion Btu annually. Various studies estimate that as much as 20 to 50 percent of this energy is lost as excess or waste heat. Recovery of waste heat can conserve energy, reduce operating costs, and lower environmental emissions. It would be valuable to quantify recoverable waste heat sources and identify the barriers that hinder its recovery. This paper provides an overview of waste heat losses specific to high temperature processes in primary metals and minerals manufacturing. It summarizes findings from a broader study conducted for the Department of Energy Industrial Technologies Program; the study evaluates energy losses, recovery practices and opportunities, and R & D needs for waste heat technology development.

"Diesel exhaust particulate material from exhaust pipe scrapings of two trucks, diluted automobile diesel exhaust particulate material collected on filters, and two oil shale ores were prepared for the Ames mutagenrcity assay by dichloromethane OOP ex¬traction, by dispersion into 0.85% saline, or by dispersion into dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL) emulsion in saline. Salmonella typhimunum TA98 was used to detect frameshift mutagens in the samples. Samples of diesel soot gave positive mutagenic responses with both DCM extraction and DPL dispersion, with the DPL dispersion giving higher results in some cases. The results suggest that possible mutagens associated with inhaled particles may be dispersed or solubilized into the phospholipid component of pulmonary surfactant and become active in such a phase.INTRODUCTIONThe Ames Salmonella/microsome assay (Ames et al., 1975) has been shown to be a useful test for detecting genotoxic properties of various agents. Hundreds of specific chemicals have been screened (McCann et al., 1975), and the test has been applied for many types of environmental samples. Airborne mutagenic agents, for example, have been found in urban air (Chrisp and Fisher, 1980; Hughes et al., 1980; Ro· senkranz et al., 1978), in diesel engine exhausts (Huisingh et al., 1978), and in the by-products of coal combustion processes (Chrisp et al., 1978).Samples of airborne particles are typically collected on membrane filters, and undergo a rigorous extraction procedure with organic solvents and/or ultrasonic agitation (Clark and Hobbs, 1980). Often extracts are transferred to another solvent that is compatible with the assay system. These extraction procedures, while efficient from an analytical perspective, are not physiologically plausible. The questions that present themselves are whether a demonstrated mutagen can be taken up in vivo and whether the process is quantitatively or qualitatively different from the above laboratory procedure (Wallace et al., 1984).When a particle of respirable size is inhaled to the alveolar region of the lung, its first physiological contact is with pulmonary surfactant that lines the inner surfaces of the alveoli. This surfactant is an aqueous fluid containing proteins, phospholipids, and other components (R. J. King, 1982). The principal phospholipid constituent is L·alpha-phosphatidylcholine, beta,gamma-dipalmitoyl, or dipalmitoyl lecithin (OPL) (l. C. King et al., 1981)."

"Recycling should be promoted to keep the global environment. However, it is difficult to detennine the quantitative impact. A life cycle assessment is one of the most reliable methods to estimate the global environment impact.Exergy is useful like entropy when considering the sustainable development. All of our activities have been obtained exergy resources and/or energy itself and throw away waste and/or waste heat. We are trying to use exergy to estimate the quantity of energy and matter for resource accounting. For recycling plastic, plastic has two aspects; material and energy source.The environmental assessment of plastic recycling suggests that the exergy reduction of the entire system is estimated by the yield of matter and the process efficiency. The material recycling is better than the thennal recycling when the process efficiency is high. However, the thennal recycling is much better for the low efficiency. The transition point is able to be decided by the efficiency of the manufacturing and the electric power generation.IntroductionRecently, many of the global environmental problems have become conspicuous like global wanning, ozone layer depletion and acid rain. Some of the methods like life cycle assessment for solving these problems have been presented. Anxiety concerning the proble1ns of energy and resources has led to a rapid increase in the interest in describing and understanding the conversion processes of energy and other resources in today's society. All human activity is supported by obtaining power and products of high exergy from the environment and throwing away the waste material and the waste heat of low exergy back the environment. However, the total exergy in the whole system becomes absolutely smaller than before.The rate of obtaining high exergy products and energy itself by human activity and the speed, by which waste and waste heat having low exergy are thrown away are too fast to attribute to environmental problems [1-3].A material's use by recycling was often common in a circulating society mainly. A significant amount of energy is consumed during circulation. An environmental impact assessment method for the process or the system has not been devised when both of them are taken into consideration. Even if the life cycle assessment evaluation, which has been correctly used up to now, is applied, it is not sufficient for an overall evaluation concerning matter and energy.The real sustainable development is that the exergy reduction value by all human activities on the earth is kept within the range of the exergy reduction in order to consider the earth as closed stationary system. It is important to evaluate the process or the system by using the exergy, and design them so that the exergy loss may decrease as much as possible. We have to consider what process improvement is the most effective."

This paper presents a review of heat illness in mining, including reference to several recent investigations by the author. Heat illness is a collective term, covering the conditions of heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps and miliaria rubra. Heat stroke is life-threatening and is by far the most serious condition. It is rare in mining, if appropriate control measures are instituted. Heat exhaustion is primarily due to hypohydration, following prolonged sweating in hot conditions. Symptoms include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, or brief syncope. Confusion, ataxia, prolonged unconsciousness or convulsions are strongly suggestive of heat stroke. Heat cramps are painful involuntary contractions of skeletal muscle associated with work in hot conditions. The limbs are usually involved and the spasms typically last a few minutes, during which the affected part of the body is incapacitated. Heat cramps tend to occur in heat exhaustion, when hypohydration becomes marked. Miliaria rubra is a skin rash caused by extravasation of sweat into the skin, as a result of obstruction of the sweat glands. It occurs after prolonged and profuse sweating in hot environments. It can take three to four weeks of sedentary duties, in an air-conditioned surface environment, for the condition to resolve. Heat illness would be unlikely in underground mining, if the thermal environment was sufficiently well controlled by ventilation and refrigeration. This is however, often not practicable. Where engineering controls alone cannot provide sufficient control of risk, the residual risk can be assessed using an appropriate heat stress index. While procedural controls may further reduce the residual risk, it is important to remember that these are less reliable than engineering controls and cases of heat illness may still occur.
