ITALY is by- far the poorest in mineral resources of the so-called great pou7ers of Europe. Before the World War this shortage was not so serious as the essential minerals that could not be mined domestically at a profit were bought in the world markets. In those days tourist trade and remittances from Italians abroad helped to provide Italy with foreign exchange. During the World War, when certain mineral products were scarce and when prices rose in some instances to several times normal, the Italian Government began to regulate consumption and imports. It was not until later, when the Fascist regime established the corporate state, that Italy seriously considered adopting a of self-sufficiency. Private industry was grouped under separate corporations, for the principal industries; including mining and metallurgy and the heads of the large producing companies, became members of these corporations. According to reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, as of January 1, 1929, there were 2,205 cracking units completed or being built in the United States, with a total daily charging capacity of 1,476,874 barrels. A similar survey of a year ago showed 2,334 units of 1,288,000 barrels total capacity. This indicates that despite a decrease in. number of units, there was a material increase in capacity. The year 1928 was, in general, an important one for the cracking branch of the industry. Gasoline consumption reached record levels, prices were higher than in 1927, and it is probable that in the late months of the year the cracking plants were operating very close to capacity.

The concept of initiating a large action-oriented contract, directed toward inherently safe mining systems, was conceived by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in January 1970. At that time we were in the process of establishing research contracts and grants, about 100 of which were let in FY 71 to deal individually with fairly specific technological areas. These projects in the aggregate covered a wide spectrum of health and safety problems. What appeared to be necessary was the creation of a project or program that would provide a focal point for the demonstration of many of the results of this research and also in the action sense culminate with working hardware and systems that could be tested and demonstrated over a fairly long teen. The concept of working demonstrable systems, rather than just a conceptual study, was, felt to be necessary for two significant reasons. In the development of any new system, the translation from concept to working hardware is usually a costly and time consuming process which acts as a deterrent to implementation. Secondly, many decisions in the mining community to change equipment or systems ,are based on first hand observation of the new system, in operational practice, an attitude which is certainly understandable in view of the high capital costs of equipment. Linear programing provides a mathematical technique by which activities can be planned in such a way that an optimal result is obtained. Routine applications of linear programing require only a knowledge of algebra. However, a complete understanding of the fundamentals of linear programing requires a knowledge of advanced mathematics. The purpose of this publication is clarification of terminology and illustration of applications in comparatively simple mining problems. Two mining situations are considered: Mine stopes from which ore is to be produced at a minimum production cost; also, uranium mines from which ore is transported to one mill, a maximum monetary value is desired. The details of data arrangement for solution by linear programing are described and the solutions are presented. Results of these solutions indicate successful applications of linear programing to mine production scheduling.

Understanding energy performance of existing buildings is vital to increasing their efficiency and reducing the overall energy consumptions. This entails facility managers to systematically monitor building energy performance and reliably identify and analyze potential problems. Currently, infrared thermography is widely used as a primary diagnostic tool for the detection of building performance problems. Nonetheless, applications of thermal images for building inspection are mainly restricted to manual and labor-intensive identification and qualitative assessment of heating or cooling loss. Automated identification of potential problems and reliable cost analysis of the associated energy loss can help homeowners to minimize financial risk of retrofits and maximize energy savings. To that end, this paper presents a new automated method for calculating the cost of energy loss for building diagnostics. In the proposed method, first, using a hand-held thermal camera, the auditors collect digital and thermal imagery from the buildings under inspection. Then, using a recently proposed method for Energy Performance Augmented Reality (EPAR) modeling, an actual 3D spatio-thermal model is generated and superimposed with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based expected energy performance model. The resulting EPAR model is placed into the method proposed in this paper for cost analysis of the energy loss. Through a new 3D thermal mesh modeling using k-d tree structure and nearest neighborhood searching, performance deviations between these models are automatically calculated. Using a temperature threshold, the areas associated with potential performance problems are detected in the EPAR model and are visualized using a metaphor based on traffic light colors. Then, the actual R-values of the detected areas are measured at the level of 3D points. Based on the measured R-values and the estimated air change rate for the detected air leaks, (1) the heat loss or gain caused either by poor insulation or air infiltration/exfiltration and (2) the associated energy costs are automatically calculated. The proposed method is validated on several locations of existing residential buildings. The preliminary results show the potential of the proposed method for minimizing the inspection time as well as the risk associated with the cost analysis of retrofitting potential building performance problems.

THE Federation of Engineering Societies has been created for the sole purpose of public service. This initial meeting surely warrants some discussion of a few of the problems to which this organization, for expression of the --. engineering mind, can quite well give consideration. Some of the greatest of the problems before the country and, in fact, before the world, are those growing out of our industrial development. The enormous industrial expansion of the last fifty' years has lifted the standard of living and comfort beyond any dream of our forefathers. Our economic system under which it has been accomplished has given stimulation to invention, to enterprise, to individual improvement of the highest order, yet it presents a series of human and social difficulties for the solution of which we are groping. The congestion of population is producing subnormal conditions of life. The vast repetitive operations are dulling the human mind. The intermittency bf employment due to the bad coordination of industry, the great waves of unemployment in the ebb and flow of economic tides, produce infinite wastes and great suffering. Our business enterprises have become so large and complex that the old personal relationship between employer and worker has to a great extent disappeared. The aggregation of great wealth, with its power of economic domination, presents social, economic ills which we are constantly struggling to remedy.

To MOST mine operators, it seems evident that there is a drill-steel problem, although under certain conditions the amount f drill-steel breakage does not appear serious. What is at fault? It may be one or a combination of circumstances. The development of rock drills to the hammer-drill type in place of the old reciprocating piston drill, probably is one important cause for the greater steel breakage. Perhaps the manufacturers of drill steel have failed to realize what alloys are needed for this new service or have overlooked the changes in the art of rock drilling. Although suitable alloys are provided, they may not be so handled in the manufacturing process as to be in the best condition to withstand the demands of rock drilling. The mine operator may be at fault in desiring to use the smallest possible drill-steel section in order that the gage of the drill bits may be correspondingly small and the amount of footage drilled per unit of labor may be greater; or the black-smithshop practice at the mines may need improvement. The miner who uses the drill steel may also require more intensive supervision and education. Again, the manufacturer of rock drills may have failed to study the types of blows the steel alloys will withstand satisfactorily and which their tools are delivering and so he may not know whether or not a different design of rock drill would equal or excel their present drilling speeds without treating the drill steel so severely. All of these hypotheses probably have their supporters. On the other hand, perhaps we are seeking too much service from drill steel and we need a fuller realization of the fatigue strains developed and should prepare to relieve these by a periodic heat treatment of the steels. However, we do not find any proof that any of these suppositions may be held responsible for the drill-steel breakage attendant to mining. The proposed investigation of this matter by the U. S. Bureau f Mines is fully warranted in the promotion of the conservation of labor and material, and the safety of the workmen. Facilities at Amax Gold's Sleeper Mine process some 330 kt of high grade ore and 4100 kt of low grade ore annually to produce 6.8 t of gold and 7.8 t of silver. High grade ore is processed in a conventional milling facility employing gravity concentration, CIC and CIP unit operations for gold and silver recovery. Low grade ore is processed using heap leaching and carbon adsorption methods.. Presented are the evolution and descriptions of the Sleeper processing facilities and discussions of selected' operating results.

In 1965, Monsanto started planning of a new dike (No. 15) for use in disposing of ore tailings at its Columbia, Tennessee phosphorus plant. Generally, in the phosphorus industry only clay tailings are produced making it necessary to borrow fill for construction of a retaining dike. Borrow area investigations indicated that weathered shales and limestones adjacent to the dam site would provide adequate construction materials. It was proposed that the more clayey weathered shales would be used for the impervious core and the more granular weathered limestones would be placed in the outer shell of the dike. A dike section is shown in Figure 1 with gradation curves for core and shell materials in Figure 2. Figure 3 shows an aerial view of the tailings pond and dike during first-stage construction. Although the borrow area explorations indicated that the weathering of the sedimen-tary deposits was highly irregular, it was not considered necessary, at the time, to specify special excavation techniques that would ensure a thorough blending of the materials in the borrow pit. Instead, because of the short haul distance, a scraper operation for both clay core and granular shell materials was adopted as the most economical construction method. Using this materials-handling technique, variations in permeability could be expected in the compacted layers inthe embankment. Where continuous layers of less clayey limestones were placed in the core of the dam, extending from the upstream to downstream shells, seepage losses would be expected to increase substantially. Upon completion of the damn 1966, and shortly after reservoir filling, it was apparent that the construction technique used had resulted in the formation of pervious layers through the clay core. Excessive seepage on the downstream face of the dike was noticeable within a very short time. A monitoring program was established, using piezometric observations and flow measurements. Complex chemical and physical changes occurring during carbonization result in a heterogeneous system composed of gaseous, liquid, and solid phases, whose relative proportions and chemical compositions change constantly as temperature increases. Studies in which the participating variables are isolated and controlled should be useful in formulating the mechanism of coal carbonization. The most characteristic property of a coking coal is its ability to form a plastic mass at a certain stage of the carbonization process. During this period it is believed that fluidity of the coal influences the properties of the resultant coke. This report gives results of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the influence of the maximum fluidity attained by the charge on the physical quality of the coke or char produced. As a first approach to the problem, researchers investigated high-melting-point pitches, which are relatively simple carbonaceous materials. The plastic properties of these pitches, prepared specially for this work, varied greatly; their fluidities, as measured by the Gieseler plastometer, covered most of the fluidity range characteristic of coking coals. Blending these pitches with increasing pro-portions of fine coke progressively reduced their fluidities. Coal-pitch and coal-coke blends also were treated; their fluidities were varied by changing their blending ratios. The various blends were carbonized in a small-scale carbonizer and the resistance of the carbonized residue (char) to abrasion was determined in a small-scale tumbler test, using the Roga drum.

Two papers dealing with Noranda's milling operations have already been presented. The first1 of these covered the initial metallurgical problems connected with the treatment of the ore, while the second2 described the development of the mill from a 500-ton unit in 1928 to one with a daily capacity of 3000 tons less than six years later. At the time the second paper was written the equipment whirh had been installed to bring the mill capacity up to 3000 tons was being tuned into production and for this reason, though each step had previously been tested by a large-scale pilot operation, it was thought advisable to withhold metallurgical data until any starting-up difficulties had been overcome and anticipated requirements fulfilled. These requirements called for an improvement in gold recovery without any lowering of the previous ratio of concentration, and the pages that follow deal with the methods by which this result was obtained. An idea of the character of Noranda concentrating ore will be gained from an inspection of the following mineralogical analysis of the ore treated by the mill during 1933: MineRal Content Mineral ConteNt Chalcopyrite, per cent..... 6.8 Silica and silicates, per cent............ 18.3 Pyrite, per cent........... 22.1 Gold, native and as telluride, oz. per ton 0.15 Pyrrhotite, per cent....... 51.5 Silver, probably as argentite, oz. per tou 0.35 Magnetite, per cent....... 0.5 Thesr figures, which are typical, show that over 73 per cent of the ore treated consists of pyrite and pyrrhotite. Determirnation of the proportion of unrecovered gold associated with each of these minerals was therefore of primary importance in developing a suitable method for improving gold recovery. Several years ago, Hudco Industrial Products began experimenting with the idea of levitating a conveyor belt with a film of air, much like the puck on an air-hockey table. While conducting its research, the company found out that some Russian and Dutch companies attempted the concept during the 1970s. After studying those conveyors, Hudco determined that its design was better. The Hudco advanced air-supported conveyor consists of an air-tight plenum, or chamber, that runs the length of the belt. The topside of the plenum has a formed trough. It corresponds to the profile of conventional troughing rollers. Low-pressure air is provided to the sealed plenum from a low horsepower blower. This pressurized air is metered and released through the central portion of the trough and reacts against the underside of the belt. The differential pressure between the top and bottom surfaces creates the lift to support the loaded belt. Airtight covers are installed to seal the transported materials in the plenum trough.

The Arbre viaduct, 200 metres long, is the most important structure on the Belgian portion of the High Speed Train line between Paris and Brussels. The particular geotechnical conditions of the soil with carboniferous limestone affected by karstic phenomena, has prompted the designer to found the viaduct on systems of high capacity vertical and batter micropiles. The design of the working micropiles was validated by full scale tests performed on instrumented micropiles. The size of the structure and the deformation criteria to be met when HS trains are crossing the viaduct, together with the lack of references for such innovative structure, called for monitoring the movements of the piers as soon as the link was open to traffic. The authors report on the results of loading tests on micropiles and the results of settlement structure monitoring for a period of 4 years. Settlement of the foundation is estimated taking into account the group effect.

Numerous underground coal mine ventilation seals have been installed in the United States of America prior to 2006 and after implementation of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act. Seal engineering, design, placement, and construction is regulated in industry, but post-construction monitoring of seals is limited to visual inspection of the outby face and seal perimeter, convergence measurement, and atmospheric monitoring. To monitor seal integrity and to provide safe working conditions, a form of non-destructive testing (NDT) is necessary to accurately reflect the health of the seal by detecting post-construction changes, deterioration, or defects within in-situ seals in underground coal mines. Previous research from the National Institute of Safety and Health (NIOSH) has indicated the potential for utilizing ground penetrating radar (GPR) for assessing in-situ mine seals. This paper provides an update to the assessment of proposed NDT methods for seal evaluation using commercially available GPR technologies and systems. Full-scale free-standing seals and large-scale seal specimens were analyzed with an array of GPR units from various manufactures using multiple frequencies.

Germany-made AFX-100 multi-grade fluidized classifier, with exquisite built-in structure and unique novel design, materializes not only advanced and efficient classification, but also precise particle distribution and safe operation, in addition to lower energy consumption and operational cost. It, simultaneously in place of screw grader, water cyclone, and fine mesh sieve, is equipped with multi-function, and indicates superior advantage in comparison with other else grading facilities. As the third-generation equipment, which is efficient and modern, it, in China and therefore all over the world, will find wide application in processing both fine and ultra-fine iron ore resources. Industrial test, carried out in Benxi Steel?s Waitoushan Iron Mine, shows efficient classification, i.e., ?74µm particle contents in coarse, medium and fine products come to 6.09%,11.82% and 82.73%, respectively, while qualitative and quantitative efficiencies end up by 74.38% and 87.66%, respectively. Its separation efficiencies amount to 2.2 times as many as spiral classifiers, 1.8 times as hydrocyclones, and 1.3 times as vibration high-frequency fine screens. Another industrial test, which was practiced in Anshan Steel?s Donganshan Sinter Plant, indicates that classification qualitative efficiency comes to 65.06%, equal to 1.51 times as many as hydrocyclones; yield, 55.79%; -71µm particle contents in medium and coarse products, 42.02%; -71µm content in fine product, 95.42%; and concentration, 12.33%. Estimated separation indexes are as follows: Yield for concentrate at 31.22%, up 0.22% than that from general processing line; concentrate grade at 66.42%, up 1.13%; recovery ratio comes to 65.84%, up 1.28%, which, based on pilot study, results in 20 million yuan of economic return for Donganshan Floatation Plant.

OUT of the fabulous iron ranges of Michigan?s Upper Peninsula since Pearl Harbor have come go to the steel mills to become tanks, guns, ships, and other weapons for a United Nations' victory. But the contributions to the war effort, as far as Michigan's iron country is concerned, do not stop there. The same men who mine iron ore deep inside the earth also are "mining" on top of the ground, gleaning a harvest of scrap iron and steel that is writing a big chapter in the War Production Board's salvage program. At virtually every mine over an area of a hundred square miles, everyone from the top mine official and straw boss to the man in the dippings is scrap conscious. They know the importance of the ore they mine but they are equally familiar with the importance of iron and steel scrap in war production. The successful job they are doing in salvage is a tribute to the entire Upper Michigan mining industry and to the man who marshaled them into action-John M. Bush, chief of the land department for the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Co. at Negaunee, and for ten years an A.I.M.E. member. Also, this job should be an inspiration to 611 mining. metallurgical, and petroleum communities as to the latent possibilities of organized scrap recovery.

"Rib failures are a major hazard in underground mining. When pillars are subjected to loading, extensile cracks are generated parallel to the excavation boundary, which can manifest as rib falls. A common mitigation measure is to install supports, especially bolts, normal to the rib surface. The type and spatial distribution of these supports along the pillar is often based on experience rather than comprehensive analysis. Since conducting field experiments is often impractical and expensive, a convenient alternative is to perform 3D numerical modeling. In this study, FLAC3D has been used to capture the interaction of rib bolts and the failure processes governing the stability of pillars. An associated goal is to determine whether, at all, a continuum software is capable of modeling the effect of supports. The modeling involved two important steps: selection of a proper constitutive model, and, explicit simulation of rock bolts. Based on precursory work in the last decade, an S-shaped strength criterion was chosen that can describe the tensile fracture mechanism of rock at low confinement and shear failure mechanism of rock at high confinement. The built-in pile structural element in FLAC3D is a simplified representation of the complete bolt system. Hence, the different components of a rock bolt (i.e., steel, grout, steel-grout interface, and grout-rock interface) have been explicitly modeled within the rock mass and then tested for its ability to replicate the ground-support interaction behavior. INTRODUCTION Rib failure-related hazards and injuries have plagued the mining industry for decades (Mohamed et al., 2016; Iannacchione and Prosser, 1998). In highly stressed environments, excavation parallel cracks are the primary initiators of skin instability. In absence of any support, this failure can indirectly destabilize the excavation by increasing the exposed span of intersections and roadways. Over the last two decades, there have been numerous injuries (fatal and non-fatal) due to rib failures in underground coal/non-coal mines."

"THE FOLLOWING notes on coal mining in the Edmonton city area are based, in the main, on scattered reports and accounts as little coal mining has been done in this area for about 20 years and few people are left who were involved in what was at one time an important industry of northern Alberta. Although coal mining is not likely to be permitted in the city area itself in the future, a record of this work is warranted to indicate the ·conditions and problems that may be encountered if underground mining again is proposed in the district in the same geological formations and in similar strata. Coal mining in the Edmonton area developed with the influx of settlers in the latter part of the nineteenth century and the first part of the present century. Probably local coal was used by the Fort's blacksmith as early as 1841, and the early settlers probably were 'gopherholing' into the outcrops along the river banks by the 1870s. The first report of commercial coal mining was in 1880 when a contract was let by the Hudson's Bay Company for the provision of 300 tons. As the population in the city and northern parts of the province grew, many new mines were opened along the river and in the district, and coal was even shipped by barge to points in Saskatchewan(1 ,2) By 1909 the Department of Public Works reported that 'Edmonton stands as the second largest domestic coal producing centre in the province'. It continued to hold this position until 1942. From about 1912 to 1951 annual production from mines in the city and surrounding district ranged between 0.38 and 0.65 million tons, depending on weather, wars and strikes. Production began to decline in 1951 because of the increasing availability and consumption of natural gas which was piped into the city and then provided to other towns and rural areas in the northern part of the province. Taylor noted that between 1880 and March 1970, when the last mine within the city area closed, the total of mines and prospects within the Edmonton city area rose to 153. Most of them were small; not more than 20 produced more than a quarter of a million tonnes during their entire life, and only three produced a million tonnes or more. As described by Taylor ""within the city district workings extend discontinuously from the apex of a narrow triangle near Groat Bridge to the base of the triangle in the Clover Bar area"". The larger mines were in this latter area. Approximate locations of the old mine workings in the city are shown in Taylor's atlas. A number of other coal mines were worked in the Rabbit Hill, Big Island, St. Albert, Namao, Cardiff and Morinville districts around the city."
