This paper details how the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), as a disclosure and conduct regulator, approaches regulation of continuous disclosure, capital raising and control transactions in the mining and resources sector, and the reasons for the approach. In examining this topic the paper considers the Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code (JORC, 2004), the VALMIN Code (VALMIN Committee, 2005), the relevant ASX Listing Rules and the relevant provisions of the Corporations Act 2001 (Corporations Act). Relatively pure aluminum nitride (AIN) recently has been prepared in sufficiently large amounts to permit a variety of experimental studies.4/ Several mechanical and chemical properties have been investigated, which show that this substance has good potentialities as a container for liquid aluminum, gallium, and boric oxide. The present work by the Bureau of Mines was undertaken to obtain thermo-dynamic data pertinent to the calculations regarding thermal stability and reactivity of aluminum nitride. The following measurements were made: (1) determination of the heat of formation from the elements at 298.15° K.; (2) determinations of the heat capacity over the temperature range 51° to 298.15° K. and the evaluation of the entropy at 298.15° K. therefrom; and (3) determinations of the heat content over the temperature range 298.15° to 1,800° K. These data are combined to obtain free energies of formation from the elements between 298.15° and 2,000° K.

This committee is to cover the whole mining industry, in which much progress in reducing accidents has been made in recent years. Members of the A.I.M.E. can considerably assist in this important problem.

“Excelência no atendimento aos clientes” é uma máxima declarada como busca constante em todos os segmentos de mercado, inclusive no de aços longos, negócio da ArcelorMittal Monlevade. Com foco neste objetivo, muitas vezes, a empresa se volta para o mercado na tentativa de mapear as necessidades dos clientes. Após identificá-las, e absorvê-las, acaba-se criando complexidades em processos tanto em produtos quanto em serviços. A cada internalização de demanda, segue-se a rotina sob a ameaça de transformar o processo de atendimento em algo confuso e desatualizado, além de não haver segurança de que o cliente está satisfeito de fato. Este trabalho mostra o histórico recente de uma expressiva evolução do atendimento aos clientes da unidade de Monlevade, resultado obtido através de análises, utilizando a metodologia PDCA, que orientaram a uma nova estrutura da equipe de atendimento na Gerência de Logística, implicando em reformulação de acompanhamentos/controles de processos e intensificação dos contatos com pessoas envolvidas com atendimento aos clientes dentro e fora da planta. Com isso, foi possível superar, de forma consonante, a proposta da Logística Central de implantação de uma “Célula de Atendimento” em cada unidade da ArcelorMittal. Conclui-se que é necessário rever periodicamente a rotina de processos internos de modo a buscar um equilíbrio entre as necessidades dos clientes, complexidades geradas e resultado dos índices de atendimento.

Pollution to Lake Erie will be significantly reduced by the Westerly Storage Tunnel (WST) system, which is mainly comprised of a 10,000-ft long tunnel and a dewatering pump station in the downstream tunnel shaft. Separate construction contracts for the tunnel and pump station required careful management of the interface risks. A key decision was to decouple the projects by relocating the mining shaft away from the pump station. The need to receive the tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the pump station shaft was eliminated by dismantling the 28-ft diameter TBM in the tunnel then carrying it back through the tunnel and up the mining shaft. This paper discusses how interface risks were successfully managed during design and construction to limit overall schedule impacts.

Acidic treatment of enargite (Cu3AsS4) dissolves both arsenic and copper from the mineral and then attempts to separate them in the leach solution. The reactivity of enargite was examined in acidic to neutral solutions, over the pH range 1-7, to determine a potential range for co-dissolution. Enargite mineral samples from Butte, MT and Quirivilca, Peru were used as working electrodes in a cyclic voltammetry corrosion cell setup, which were then cycled multiple times over -1000 to 1000 mV. Surface reactions and transitions were characterized using in-situ Raman spectroscopy, which were then compared to updated EH-pH diagrams for the copper-arsenic-sulfur-water system from a previous study done under alkaline conditions. The region of co-dissolution is limited to > 600 mV vs. SHE and pH < 1 under the proposed diagram.

"THE petroleum industry in Canada has been experiencing considerable difficulty in filling its manpower requirements during the last few years, and because of the rapidly expanding nature of the industry it is concerned about the supply that will be available to fill the needs of the future. As the oil industry is one of the more technically oriented industries, the most acute problem exists primarily in the field of profession-al/technical personnel. This is particularly true in the production and exploration side of the business, because it employs the highest percentage of this type of personnel. Let me illustrate this by giving you some figures reported by the Alberta Bureau of Statistics as of December, 1965 -out of a total of 9,641 male employees engaged in oil producing and geological and geophysical operations in Alberta, 3,021, or 31 per cent, were classified as engineers, geologists, geophysicists, managers and other professional personnel. No figures are available for 1946 to make a direct comparison of the expansion of the industry over the past twenty 466 years, but it is doubtful whether more than 100 professional/technical people were engaged in producing in Alberta at that time"

For the past two years, Cliffs Natural Resources in Minnesota has tried an experiment: it has staffed a booth at the Iron Range Earth Fest. ?It was a little unusual for a mining company to participate in an event that centers around preserving the Earth?s resources,? said Julie Lucas, environmental manager at Hibbing Taconite Company. ?But Cliffs is a sustainable company and we want to take every opportunity to share information about our practices. We found the response to be overwhelmingly positive.? WHEN F. Heusler1 found in 1898 that certain alloys containing only copper, manganese, and tin were ferromagnetic, the discovery excited a great deal of interest and led to numerous investigations. It was early found that tin could be replaced by aluminum, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or boron without destroying the ferromagnetic nature of the alloys.2 Copper may also be replaced by silver.3 All these alloys have come to be known as "Heusler alloys." The aluminum alloys apparently were the most magnetic and have been most extensively investigated. However, no agreement has yet been reached as to the source of the ferromagnetism arising from these nonferromagnetic elements. Absence of reliable quantitative data makes speculation hazardous. The value of much of the earlier work was vitiated by lack of necessary precautions against contamination, and by lack of close control of heat-treatment. It was only recently established that in aluminum Heusler alloys" the ferromagnetism arose from a single phase, an ordered body-centered-cubic structure. With modern methods of preparation, heat-treatment, and X-ray examination, it is possible to prepare these alloys without contamination, to heat-treat them intelligently, and to determine what phase or phases are present in the finished sample. In the present investigation, a series of pure alloys in the comparatively neglected copper-manganese-tin system have been prepared, which consist of a single, body-centered-cubic structure (the beta phase) and whose compositions vary within wide limits. The magnetic saturation values of these single-phase alloys have been quantitatively determined, so that considerable data on the effect of composition on the ferromagnetism have been made available. In the course of the investigation some information on the extent of the stability of the beta phase and the nature of phases in adjacent regions of the ternary diagram has been accumulated. Anomalies in earlier data have been explained, and alloys have been prepared that are much more strongly magnetic than any previous Heusler alloys. PREVIOUS WORK In the original work of F. Heusler1 and coworkers,2 a maximum magnetic saturation value of I = 107 was found at the composition Cu6Mn3Sn, while a value for Cu2MnA1 of I = 443 was early measured. Ross and Grays found a second maximum at the composition Cu2MnSn, which was much more magnetic than Heusler&apos;s original alloy. F. Heusler6 then reinvestigated the system, confirmed their results,

In this paper, autogenous grinding is defined as the combined crushing and grinder of a run-of-mine ore or the product from a primary crusher, in a single stage grinding mill. This is in contrast to pebble milling where pebbles are substituted for steel balls to grind a ball mill size feed. The autogenous mill to compete in efficiency with normal methods of crushing and grinding must not use greater power, must use less labor and steel, and must produce an equivalent product.

The discovery of porphyries in petroleum by Treibs (17-19) is one of the most significant achievements relating to the origin of petroleum. The presence of these remnants of chlorophyll and hematin in petroleum has immediate practical interest in several aspects of the petroleum industry. Because of their interfacial activities and film-forming tendencies, the metal-porphyrin complexes may be expected to affect the wettability of petroleum-reservoir rock surfaces and influence the flow of fluids in these reservoirs. Also, studies of the relationship of trace elements and porphyrins in petroleum may be expected to yield valuable information on source beds and petroleum migration. Finally, the extreme stability of several metal-porphyrin complexes complicates removal of these metals from some petroleum stocks where they exert deleterious effects on processing and utilization. Metal-porphyrin complexes are commonly associated with the asphaltic residues of crude oils in which they occur (8, 9, 15). However, investigations in this and another laboratory (15) show that small amounts of these complexes often remain in partly refined petroleum products, such as thermally cracked distillates and deasphalted stocks.

As can be guessed from the subtitle, this paper will not be a geologist&apos;s one since neither of the authors is a professional geologist. This will be an attempt to present the various aspects of the legal, economic and geological setting that condition the exploration for mineral resources in Haiti. Before going any further, we are going to present a summary of our rather short mining history. One must first mention that Caribbean countries are latecomers to the mining business. If we go back to the colonial period (1500-1600&apos;s) there are net many traces of mining activity. The major exception to this is the recovery of alluvial gold in Hispaniola, Puerto-Rico and Cuba and also some sporadic copper mining in Hispaniola (notably in Haiti near the city of Gonaives and in some of the old mining districts in Santo-Domingo). These easily minable deposits were quickly exhausted and mining quite naturally came to an end as agriculture rose as the major economic activity. In the Haitian case, aside from very erratic mention during the 19th Century of the presence of some minerals (i.e. haematite, chalcopyrite) no serious geological work was undertaken. In the meantime, the peasants in the northern part were still looking for alluvial gold in some streams but this amounted to next to nothing. One has to come to the 1920&apos;s to find the first comprehensive geological survey. At the time, the country was under the military control of the United States. The American Government sent a team from the U.S.G.S. headed by the late W. Woodring to initiate a survey of the country. Given the lack of transportation, this was a tough task and Woodring and his associates did it magnificently. As a result of their efforts, they published a very thick piece of work of more than 600 pages. "The Geology of the Republic of Haiti" although it was published in 1924 is a classic and is a must for anyone interested in the geology of Haiti.

This paper examines the statistical relationship between quality of life indicators and the gross value of mineral production from Australian regions. We used quality of life indicators, aggregated for 673 local government areas, of household income, housing affordability, access to communication services, educational attainment, life expectancy and unemployment. We find no evidence of systematic negative associations between quality of life and the gross value of minerals production. Instead, mining activity has a positive impact on incomes, housing affordability and communication access across regional and remote Australia. Whilst we do not establish causality between mining activity and quality of life, our analysis prompts a rethink of the æresource curseÆ as it applies within a single country. Nevertheless, our findings are tempered by extensive anecdotal and empirical evidence of the negative social impacts of mining on specific demographic sectors, localities, families of fly-in, fly-out mining operations and individuals. This contrast may be a scale issue, with the regional benefits of mineral wealth masking highly-localised inequalities and disadvantage. We suggest that there is a need to better understand these impacts and, more importantly, the types of policy mechanisms government and industry can adopt to mitigate or avoid them.

Comparing to the coal seams in Eastern China, the coal seams in Western China usually have better geological conditions. Therefore, changes in the conventional gateroads layout are required for the Western longwalls. A case study based on a Western coal mine (LiMin) was presented to discuss the feasibility of an innovative gateroads layout. Based on the geological conditions, a 5m wide pillar between the adjacent two longwall panels, 09112 and 09113, was proposed in order to increase the recovery rate. More importantly, the entry supporting strategy of panel 09113 headgate needed to be determined and verified carefully since only 5m wide pillar was left to separate the entry from the panel 09112 gob. Three strategies with different supporting intensities in the panel 09113 headgate were evaluated by numerical modeling. The model outputs indicated that roof and rib boltings plus single hydraulic props were essential to maintain the gateroads stable. Field observation showed that under the proposed entry supporting strategy, the total roof-tofloor and rib-to-rib convergences were only 360mm and 460mm, respectively, during the service life of the panel 09113 headgate, which indicated that the innovative gateroad layout proposed in this paper is suitable for longwalls with similar geological conditions in Western China.

The Marine Mining Technology Center (MMTC) was authorized by an act of the United States Congress in 1996. The act established several marine minerals research centers in the U.S., including one at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Alaska MMTC is funded through the Minerals Management Service of the Department of the Interior and concentrates its research in the Artic seas region. Recent research projects at the MMTC include, among others, a geographic information system (GIS) application to the gold placer deposits offshore Nome, Alaska, a marine gold placer reserve definition model using a neural network, and development of an expert system model for submarine tailings disposal (STD) planning and decision-making. Although geostatistics remains the most prevalent method used today for ore grade estimation, researchers have made numerous improvements over the years for accurately predicting grades of ore using various other estimation techniques. As a result, the neural network has recently emerged as an alternative to geostatistics for grade estimation purposes. A neural network is a non-linear, model-free estimator that is well-suited for noisy and/or sparse data environments. Neural networks perform best with non-linear spatial data, contrary to the stationary assumption of ordinary Kriging techniques. In the marine placer ore reserve definition model, the neural network technique was used to estimate placer gold reserves offshore Nome. This study demonstrated the utility of neural network modeling over other traditional ore reserve estimation methods, especially for high cut-off grades. Some of the relevant issues of neural network modeling were also addressed in the study. In testing, the neural network produced results that were close to those from geostatistical techniques including Kriging, polygon, and inverse distance methods.

Deep foundations are often constructed as end bearing members with a significant amount of their capacity derived from bedrock. Sites with highly variable bedrock conditions therefore present a unique challenge when attempting to estimate the design elevation of deep foundations. Typical subsurface characterization techniques such as drilling, standard penetration testing (SPT), and cone-penetration testing (CPT) may fail to adequately establish top-of-rock elevation in geologic settings prone to karst and/or significant amounts of residuum, saprolite, and deformed bedrock. Seismic surface wave geophysical methods have been increasingly used to map bedrock topography in such settings. However, the current standard of practice for these methods introduces resolution limitations in spatially variable subsurface conditions due to averaging effects from the analytical framework used to process the acquired data. This study explores the use of a tomographic approach with full waveform inversion (FWI) to map top-of-rock elevations at a numerically simulated site representative of highly variable bedrock topography. Comparisons are made with seismic refraction (SR) and a dispersion-based multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) approach as more commonly used in geophysical subsurface investigations. The results highlight that FWI provides a superior estimate of top-of-rock topography than SR and MASW at a cost of a significant increase in the required computational resources and time.

It introduces a nonlinear framework that transforms the batch grinding equation into the Rosin-Rammler distribution, providing more accurate analysis under different operating conditions. The study uses marble as test material and investigates the adaptability of the nonlinear model with different media sizes.

A refinement of the tungsten-cobalt phase diagram is presented for compositions to 85 at. pct cobalt and for temperatures to the solidus. Preparation of alloys by powder metallurgy methods is described, and the results of studies made by a combination of techniques involving microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and dilatometry are discussed. The existence of u-W6Co7 is confirmed (rhombohedral D85 structure). The W6Co7 phase forms periectically at 1,685&apos;115° C by reaction of liquid with primary W; the peritectic melt is at 71 at. pct cobalt. The homogeneity range of u-W6Co7 extends to both sides of the ideal stoichiometric ratio, through a compositional range of about 5 at. pct. The compositional limits for u-W6Co7 vary slightly below 1,471°±5° C, the temperature of the eutectic reaction forming u-W6Co7 plus a. The eutectic composition is at 79 at, pct cobalt. The existence of WCo3 is confirmed (hexagonal D019 structure). WCo3 forms peritectoidally at 1,093°±5° C by reaction between a and u-W6Co7 and exists over a narrow homogeneity range of 0.5 to 0.6 at. pct. The solid solubility of cobalt in tungsten is low (maximum 0,9 at, pct cobalt) and results in contraction of the tungsten lattice. Tungsten is extensively soluble in a-Co at higher temperatures; the a-Co lattice is expanded by the presence of tungsten in solid solution. There was no indication of the formation of a o-phase nor of any intermediate phases other than WeCo7 and WCo3. The WeCo7 and WCo3 phases are compared with similar phases in other systems.
