"The intact rock constant, mi, is one of the three basic input parameters required for the widelyused Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Values for the constant should ideally be determined by statistical analysis of laboratory test data. In this paper the influence of the inclusion or exclusion of tensile test data on derived values is discussed. We firstly investigate the relationship between direct tensile strength (DTS) test values and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) test values based on a literature search, finding that the correlation between the two test types is DTS = 0.9*BTS, independent of the lithology being tested. Secondly, using the shear strength database of Douglas (2002), we examine the influence of confining pressure range and the inclusion or exclusion of DTS and BTS test values on calculated values of mi.Chief amongst the influences was the exclusion of tensile data in the calculation procedure, particularly when the Hoek triaxial confining stress range requirement (?3?max = 0.5?c) was not satisfied. Based on a reasonable 1:1 relationship between R (the ratio of unconfined compressive to tensile strength), use of actual tensile data in the calculations for the Hoek brown failure criterion is considered to be a simpler and more robust approach to the use of a tensile cutoff based on empirical criteria such as that of Fairhurst (1964). We advocate the fitting a failure curve using compressive and tensile test data as the most reliable means of calculating mi, while at the same time satisfying requirements as originally advocated by Hoek relating to the appropriate triaxial confining stress range (?3?max = 0.5?c) and sufficient (>5) evenlyspread data points. In the absence of triaxial data the use of R provides a practical means of obtaining estimates of mi that are more robust than guideline values."

MINE operators are concerned with temperature conditions in their mines, particularly the effects of high temperatures on the l1ealth and efficiency of tl1eir employees. This paper is written to focus attention on the variables of heat transfer between rock and air. It illustrates the difficulties of predicting the manner, and the extent, of heat transfer from theoretical concepts, prior to actual operation of a mine airway. There are ~1any sources of heat in mines. The most important is that of the rock surrounding the airway. This heat, in turn, is a product of the age of the rock, faulting, proximity to recent igneous activity, oxidation of sulphides, hot ground waters, etc. The sources of heat may be constant for any one mine, but they are far from constant when dealing with various mining districts or e1•en with a number of mines in the same district. The paper investigates the effects of calcination for thermal activation and intensive milling for mechanical activation on aluminum recovery by acid leaching of pyrophyllite ore enriched via attrition scrubbing and froth flotation. The study compares these methods in terms of energy consumption and aluminum recovery, concluding that mechanical activation is more economical and environmentally friendly.

L H. DUSCHAK gave an interesting talk at a recent meeting of the. San Francisco Section, based -011 experimental work with a variety of ores at the laborator of the Treadwell-Yukon Co., in Berkeley, Cal. He was of the opinion that the customary "cut and try" method of flotation testing was still in evidence and that the flotation process was more of an art than an exact science. Propounded theories have enabled investigators to' classify reagents as well as to suggest new ideas both in the metallic and nonmetallic fields, but the application of theory has riot as yet been able to solve many of the unknown factors in operation.

This paper addresses considerations for the use of artificial support of pit walls in surface mines, a new project of the Bureau of Mines. Results to date indicate that a polymer-coated cable with embedded grit could provide good anchorage for stabilizing benches and highwalls, and an electronic method of recording discontinuities in the field is being reviewed and developed for application to mining. The objectives of the work in progress are to define the engineering parameters and evaluate the concepts for artificial supports in order to provide safe working environments when pit slopes are steepened to increase ore recovery and reduce overburden handling.

SCHEME DESIGN London’s Heathrow Airport, as the world’s busiest international airport, is missing one vital aspect - a dedicated rail link which connects directly to the city. All this is about to change with the construction of Heathrow Express - a fast, high quality rail service between the airport and the centre of London. It was recognised in the mid 1980s that if Heathrow was to accommodate the forecast growth in passenger numbers and the resulting increase in road traffic, a dedicated airport rail service would be vital. The main access into the centre of Heathrow is via a road tunnel with a direct link to the M4 motorway. The airport has introduced a number of traffic management schemes, but these can only achieve so much benefit. Growth in air passenger traffic is predicted to continue at an average of 4% per annum well into the next century and it was clear that significant investment was needed. Heathrow Express at a cost of over £350 million will provide this when it starts its service in June 1998. The business case for the scheme is based on a rider ship of around 15% of air passenger traffic. The initial Heathrow Express service will be based on four trains per hour, up to 8 car train lengths, providing a high speed non-stop service between the airport and central London in just 16 minutes. Initially a joint venture between the British Railways Board and Heathrow Airport, by mutual consent of the two parties, Heathrow Airport recently purchased the British Railways Board share making this one of the largest private sector rail projects currently under construction in the UK. Leaving Paddington, the main rail terminus in West London, Heathrow Express trains will travel 12 miles on the newly electrified line to airport junction, north of the airport. At this point they will leave the mainline to enter a 5 mile tunnel section that runs underneath the heart of the airport. The railway companies are responsible for track work, signalling and electrification of the 12 mile main line section including a grade separated junction over the main tracks for the Great Western Railway which links London and South Wales. This report presents the results of an investigation of comminution in tumbling mills. Five different topics involved with ball mill and rod mill grinding kinetics were studied and the results analyzed in terms of phenomenological size reduction and transport models. Continuous rod mill grinding was found to be characterized by high Peclet numbers which permit simulation to be carried out by several methods. The dry batch ball mill grinding of mineral mixtures showed that the breakage rates of the components were composition-dependent but time-independent and were normalizable with specific energy. Locked-cycle tests on mineral mixtures showed that a grinding circuit may take a long time to attain steady-state, during which time the composition of the mill holdings, and hence the breakage rates of the components, continuously changed. This study revealed that under plant conditions, grinding circuits can be in transience perpetually. The transport of mineral mixtures through drums was found to exhibit complex size and/or density-dependent segregation. However, the grinding media in a ball mill can eliminate such segregation, thereby simplifying the modeling of the continuous grinding of complex feeds. Wet batch rod mill grinding on single minerals divulged that the normalizability of breakage kinetics is valid for slurries of constant pulp density at different hold-ups but cannot be extended to slurries varying in pulp density.

Recently, the health of the cement industry has been threatened by the impact of environmental regulations, over-zealous state and federal agencies and radical environmental groups. Unfortunately, cement plant operations tend to trigger every environmental regulation and program promulgated, plus several programs designed specifically for the cement industry. These environmental burdens come at a time when the cement marketplace has been impacted by imports resulting in a situation where it has been difficult to increase prices to offset these increased environmental liabilities. The competitive world market forces the cement industry to seek creative ways to reduce costs. With additional major environmental programs coming down the pipe, like the Federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1980 and EPA regulation of cement kiln dust, the cement industry has attempted to try innovative supplements to cement manufacturing. The cement industry has found that using waste tires, biosolids and other solid wastes in the cement manufacturing process can reduce costs and plant emissions.

In the manufacture of steel by any process the refining period involves the partial elimination of the metalloids carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and silicon, by virtue of their reactions with ferrous oxide. At the end of this refining stage the metal consists chiefly of iron in which small amounts of these materials are dissolved. Unless some deoxidizer is added to the steel at this time, the reaction between carbon and ferrous oxide will continue with such force that it is impossible to form sound steel in the ingot molds. Instead, the product will exhibit a marked porosity due to the formation and trapping of carbon monoxide-the product of the reaction mentioned. However, if deoxidizers are added, steel may be obtained which is dense and free from gas bubbles. At the same time the deoxidation products will remain in the steel as impurities. For example, silicon additions form SiO2 or combinations of SiO2 and FeO. Additions of manganese form deoxidation products consisting of various proportions of MnO and FeO. It is also quite obvious that simultaneous additions of manganese and silicon will form oxide combinations either in the binary system MnO-SiO2 or in the ternary system FeO-MnO-SiO2. Work at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Metallurgical Advisory Board, involved the study of such deoxidizing reactions and their products. In this connection considerable information is necessary concerning FeO, MnO, SiO2, and Al2O3, and their various combinations. Some of the most needed data are the melting points of all of these materials. At the outset of this work ordinary methods of melting point determinations were found to be inadequate for various reasons, and the procedure finally selected involved the use of the micropyrometer with occasional corroboration by quenching methods. The reasons for this selection, together with a description of the apparatus, are given in the following pages.

The Salida smelting plant, owned by the Ohio & Colorado Smelting & Refining Co., is situated at an altitude of 7,000 ft., about 2 miles west of Salida, Colo., and 215 miles southwest of Denver. Salida is a division point on the Denver & Rio Grande R. R. where the narrow-gage line serving the San Juan region joins the through standard gage. This narrow-gage road also serves the coal and coke companies at Crested Butte and the lime quarries and mines at Monarch and Garfield, which are only 20 miles distant. These facts, together with the possibility of an appropriate site, doubtless influenced the builders to locate at this point. The smelting plant and yard occupy 80 acres of land on the northeast side of the Arkansas River. The slope of the ground is such as to permit of the ore being delivered by cars at a point 25 ft. above the feed floor; and in front of the furnaces there is a fall of 50 ft. for the slag dump. A recent purchase of river bottom has provided slag room for 20 years. As originally constructed, the plant consisted of four blast furnaces, 40 by 144 in. at tuyéres, two copper-matting furnaces, dust chamber, stack, power plant, blowers, sampling works, and one railroad trestle about 16 ft. from bed floor to rails. Later 12 hand roasters of excellent design were added and the practice of smelting leady matte in a copper-matting furnace was abandoned. Since the plant passed under the present management the equipment has been increased so that the following is a brief description of the same at this date: Two lead blast furnaces, 48 by 180 in. at tuyéres, 17 ft. 6 in. tuyéres to feed floor; four lead blast furnaces, 40 by 144 in. at tuyéres, 17 ft. 6 in. tuyéree to feed floor; two copper-matting furnaces, not used; blast-furnace flue, 900 ft.; area 245 sq. ft.; blast-furnace stack, 150 ft.; above furnace floor, 190 ft. When smelting a 500-ton charge per day, the gases approximate 63,700 cu. ft. per minute and travel at a speed of 260 ft. per minute. The slag is hauled by a 10-ton electric locomotive; the slag shells and settler refuse are elevated to a bin on the feed floor by an electric hoist. The Purpose of the Paper It is fitting that the first paper of a session on the Financial Aspects of Mining should be on the basic data upon which any financial discussion of a mining project must be based. The history of a mining project starts with exploration in an area considered geologically favorable for mineralization and culminates in the discovery of a body of valuable mineral material commonly known as a mineral deposit. Subsequently more detailed exploration establishes the approximate size, shape, tonnage and average grade of the deposit by surface and/or underground drilling, -surface trenching and/or underground workings. Some preliminary metallurgical testing and other studies, as required, are made at this time. Development work is then carried out to provide representative samples for determining flowsheet and metallurgical balances, preparing the deposit for production and establishing more firmly the grade and mining characteristics of the deposit. A feasibility study is then made of the engineering aspects of the project including the estimation of operating coats, the capital required to place the deposit into production, profit and return on investment. A significant technological development is discussed for the processing of certain power plant flyashes that are a problem because they contain a high water-soluble mineral content and yield inferior flyash-based brick. This development is based on the addition of hydrochloric acid to the flyash-bottom ash-sodium silicate blends used for the production of flyash-based structures. Favorable changes are evi-dent in sodium silicate consumption, where about half the amount used for making brick from normal flyash is required, processing costs, and strength and appearance of the resulting freshly formed green and fired structural products. In some high cost in-stances (above the $30 or less per thousand brick estimated for normal flyash), hydrochloric acid additions can replace or reduce other costly additives normally required for problem flyashes. This results in savings of as much as $9 per thousand brick. These developments offer promising possibilities for utilizing problem flyashes as well as flyashes which may come into contact with water soluble sulfur as a result of the eventual application of certain experimental air pollution control processes. Much of the research datal-6 accrued through work by the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University for the Department of Interior's Office of Coal Research on converting waste power coal ash to valuable brick and other structural products, can be categorized as follows: (1) general ash-to-brick tech- nology; (2) specific ash-to-brick optimization; (3) pilot plant progress; (4) production cost estimates. A summary of the progress on bench-scale experiments indicates that coal ash can yield two types of brick. An acceptable brick is obtained by mixing 73.6% fly-ash, 23.5% bottom ash and 2.9% sodium silicate solution (dry basis). Depending on the flyash and bottom ash used, optimum brick can be manufactured by mixing 72-77% flyash, 20-25% bottom ash and 2.3-3.0% sodium silicate (dry basis) with Na2O : SiO2 ratio varied according to the composition of the flyash used. These blends are thoroughly mixed and mechanically formed into green brick shapes at pressures ranging from 1000 to the more usual 3000 lb per sq in. The green shapes then are dried and fired at temperatures ranging from 1975-2150°F using clay brick cycles that are shorter than standard. Other findings reported to date indicate that when making optimum brick, it is necessary to carefully control the top size of the moisture-releasing bottom ash so that it falls between 8 and 30 mesh, depending on the flyash used. Moreover, the chemical composition of bottom ash and flyash have been found to be of little significance with the exception of a few problem flyashes which are the subject of this paper. Finally, the pilot plant, which was previously reported under construction, is now in operation. This will indicate, among other things, the cost of brick production, which was earlier estimated for non-problem flyashes at $30 or less per thousand brick. The foregoing bench-scale technology is applicable to all the initially tested ashes as well as to the majority of ashes examined during the course of research. However, a few of the ashes yield green and fired products that may be structurally inferior or unacceptable, necessitating excessive and diverse reagent addition, and/or may be coated with unsightly surface deposits. The channel reactor for ferrous and nonferrous processing has been modeled as a combination of ideal reactors. Cold model studies simulated the counter-current flow of slag and matte (or metal) with high-strength submerged gas injection. A composite model has been developed which describes the mass transfer between the two liquid phases, including the transfer of minor elements. The residence time for the matte droplets in the matte/slag emulsion is compared with the settling rates for the matte droplets in the slag to determine their relative importance in the mass transfer between matte and slag. The governing equations for mass transfer have been developed using correlations for the mass-transfer coefficients in the continuous and dispersed phases. An application of this scheme to a typical copper smelting system is presented.

The mine hoisting equipment that is selected and installed at a mine is the lifeline of the mine, and therefore the proper selection of equipment will save a lot of time and money during the life of the mine. Various types of mine hoist designs &e available today, and each has their advantages and disadvantages. Double Drum Hoists, Single Drum Hoists, Friction Hoists and various special designs of these are available but should only be used on applications where they are suitable. There have been several new drive systems for mine hoists which have come into the picture in the last ten years, and they in turn must be evaluated along with the existing drive systems for each hoist application. It does not make sense to properly select the hoist mechanicals, and then have a drive system that turns out to be a bottleneck. This paper will attempt to cover the above noted systems - both the hoist selection and hoist drive system that will provide the mine with a reliable and economical hoisting system. I. Mine Hoist Types There are two basic types of mine hoists available in the world today: the drum hoist on which the hoist rope is actually stored during the hoisting cycle, and the friction (Koepe), which merely passes the rope over the wheel during the hoisting process. Following is a general outline of each type of hoist and the hoisting applications that they are suitable for. First let us consider the simple Single Drum Hoist. As a Service or Production Hoist with cage or skip in balance with a counterweight, a Single Drum Hoist can efficiently service one or more levels since the location of the counterweight at anytime is not important. As a Production Hoist with skips in balance the Single Drum Hoist is best used for single level hoisting. All rope adjustments for proper spotting must be done manually for the Single Drum Hoist. This has to be done periodically to compensate for rope stretch. A variation of the Single Drum Hoist is the divided drum hoist. If multi-layer winding is necessary the Single Drum Hoist must have a divider to allow a separate compartment for each rope. If a counterweight is used with a divided drum application the counterweight rope can be wound on a smaller diameter (Figure 2). Consequently, it moves a lesser distance than the main conveyance and rope adjustment problems are reduced.

(written discussiont).-Professor Sauveur refers to the International Aircraft Standards Board in terns that would indicate his non-familiarity with, the organization and the working of this Board which, of course, is excusable on account of Professor Sauveur's absence in Europe at the time. He implies .that the work of this Board was entirely dominated by American interests, whereas diametrically the opposite was the case. The Board, was organized for the purpose of facilitating purchase in the United States, on the basis of common specifications, by the Allied air, services in the United States, and the Board performed a very valuable service in unify-ing the specifications of Italy, Great Britain, France, Canada, and the United States for such purposes. The proceedings of the Board were car-ried out on the basis of unanimous agreement of the representatives of the five countries and all the members from each of the countries were technical specialists or, had the advice of technical assistants. It would be difficult to find an instance of greater unity of purpose, readiness to' compromise, and efficient production than was shown by this Board, which produced seventy-eight specifications, in the preparation of which representative American manufacturers appeared before the Board.

At the risk of belaboring certain facts which have so often been stated in the past, please bear with me while I set the stage. What are the projected electrical power needs of the nation and of the Northwest during the next 15 to 20 years? No one who has researched the subject over its historical past has reached a substantially different result than the following simple conclusion: electrical power requirements are doubling every decade. There are some who question the necessity of a power company's need to install capacity every ten years equal to what it has done during its entire previous history; there are even those who would argue that such growth should be arbitrarily curtailed. We are not here today to decide who should have light, heat, jobs and comfort, for we know that a power company must, by law, meet its responsibilities of providing the energy the public expects when the switch is thrown. The Northwest area (the States of Oregon and Washington), for which I speak, has the same case history of electrical power need as does the nation as a whole, and the requirement boils down to roughly an average of a million kilowatts of new capacity each year over the next ten years and we can estimate an average two million kilowatts per year in the 1980's. This is simple arithmetic, but the problems of meeting this exhausting schedule are a real challenge. The subject to which I address this paper is the role that Western Coal will play in the 6 billion dollar investment in these power generation stations. That 6 billion dollar figure represents today's dollar value and you may wish to apply your own escalation - frankly, I haven't the courage.

A new integrated CFD-combined reactors approach is proposed for the description of processes in metallurgical vessels. CFD simulations were used to obtain the melt flow pattern in the vessels (ladle, tundish, and continuous caster mold). From these simulations, the characteristic curves were derived: (i) the residence time distribution curves (RTD) for flow-through systems (at tundish exit or at dendrite coherency surface in the mold) and (ii) the mixing curves for closed systems (ladle). In the next step, the melt flow was represented in a “combined reactors” system consisting of a combination of unit reactors (Plug Flow, Mixer, and Recirculated Volume). An inverse simulation was used to define the volumes of the reactor units and the melt flow rates between them by fitting to the characteristic curves from both methods (CFD and combined reactors). The suggested approach is demonstrated for multiple designs of Ar-stirred ladles, tundish, and SEN. This methodology can be used to enhance traditional post-processing CFD analysis and also as a tool for on-line process control.

"DEFINITION OF THE REGION AND ITS BOUNDARIESTHE REGION of Western Canada covered by this re-port lies between the Precambrian rocks of the Canadian Shield and the structurally deformed rocks of the eastern Cordillera, extending northward from the international border to the 60th parallel. It is some 487,000 square miles in area, with a total sedimentary fill of about 535,000 cubic miles0>. It includes parts of the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta and the northeast corner of British Columbia and forms part of the geological region known as the Interior Platform, commonly referred to as the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. The bedrock comprises carbonates and evaporites of Paleozoic age that lie on Precambrian crystalline rocks and are over-lain by a relatively thick blanket of Mesozoic and Tertiary elastic rocks. The nearly flat-lying bedrock, covered by a thick mantle of glacial drift, forms the Interior Plains physiographic province."

The capillary-reservoir technique was used with lead-210 and cadmium-115m to determine the self-diffiLsion coefficients of both cadmium and lead in the liquid binary Cd-Pb system. The self-diffusion coefficients of pure cadmium and pure lead were obtained and were compared with the theoretical predictions. Good to excellent agrement between the experimental and predicted values was obtained. The self-diffusion coefficients of cadmium were tneasuved in alloys containing 2.50, 9.13, 17.40, 31.00, 45.00, 69.00, and 97.00 lot pct Cd by determining- the amount of cadniiutn-115m which diffused out of a small-bore capillavy into an infinite reservoir during- a given time peviod. Sinzila7-measurements were made with lead-210 to determine the self-diffusion coefficients of lead in these identical alloys. Diffusivities were determined from measurenzents performed in the temperature interval of 290" to 480°C. The results were correlated with the Ar-vhenius equation, and the maximum variation of the equation parameters (Q and Do) was also inrestigated . THE theory of diffusion in liquids, particularly liquid metals, is relatively undeveloped in contrast to that for the gaseous and solid states. Although the practical application of liquid metals as heat-transfer media has become increasingly important, few liquid-metals systems have been investigated. Experimental data of fundamental significance in this field are not readily obtained, which may explain but not justify the present lack of knowledge. What work has been completed is primarily restricted to liquid diffusion of pure metals; little work has been done in liquid-metal diffusion of binary mixtures. A review of liquid-metal diffusion theory and research is available elsewhere.1-4 In an effort to add to the knowledge of liquid-metal systems and to increase the basic understanding of the diffusion process in liquids, a study of diffusion in the binary-liquid system, Cd-Pb, was undertaken. The capillary-reservoir technique5 was employed to measure the self-diffusion coefficients of cadmium and lead in molten binary alloys. Measurements were made with seven selected compositions and over a temperature range from 290° to 480°C. The experimental apparatus consisted essentially of the following items: constant-temperature bath, diffusion cells, capillaries, capillary-filling device, and a radioactive tracer counting system. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS Constant-Temperature Bath. A cylindrical steel vessel, 8 in. in diam and 15 in. deep, surrounded by an insulated heating coil was used with a sodium-potassium nitrate salt mixture heating medium. The bath was maintained slightly below the desired control temperature by the furnace-heating element; and a 250-w heater, actuated by a Bayley proportional temperature controller, was utilized for the final control of the temperature. A constant-speed mixer stirred the salt to insure a uniform temperature within the bath. Four calibrated Chromel-Alumel thermocouples were placed at various positions in the salt bath to verify the absence of temperature gradients. The observed temperature variation during any diffusion run was less than 0.l°C. The entire furnace assembly was mounted on four shock absorbers to exclude building vibrations and the stirrer propeller blades were adjusted so not to induce vibrations within the reservoir. A schematic diagram of the furnace and the constant-temperature bath is shown in Fig. 1. Diffusion Cell. The diffusion cells and associated parts were the same, except for slight modification, as the one used by walls1 in this laboratory, and are shown in detail elsewhere.' A graphite crucible, 4 in. long and 40 mm (1-1/2 in.) ID, enclosed in a 60-mm (2-1/4 in.) Pyrex tube cell about 18 in. long, was used as a container for the melt. The reservoir (molten alloy in the graphite crucible) was usually about 2 to 2-1/2 in. deep. Graphite was used because of its satisfactory nature as a refractory material and the low solubility of carbon in molten Cd-Pb alloy.677 The Pyrex cell was closed at the bottom and fitted at the top (open end) with a 2-in. Dresser coupling. A brass flange was welded to the top of the coupling. The upper part of the diffusion assembly was bolted to this flange with an O-ring seal. The lower part of the diffusion cell was supported in a 3-in. brass cylinder which was open to allow for circulation of salt around the cell. The top assembly consisted of two synchronous motors, a drive shaft, a thermocouple well, and controlled-atmosphere inlets and outlets. One motor was used for rotation of the capillaries at a rate of 1/2 rpm in the reservoir during the diffusion run. The other motor was used for the vertical positioning of the capillaries and the capillary holder by means of a simple screw drive. The capillary holder and drive assembly were lowered into the reservoir for the run and raised after the desired diffusion time at a rate of approximately 0.4 in. per min. The performance of mould fluxes in satisfying its quality requirements can have a significant effect on the efficiency of the continuous casting process and on the surface quality of the products. This performance is affected by various parameters including the characteristics of the mould fluxes, the quality of the steel being cast and the operational conditions of the caster. The extremely complex relationships involving the parameters mentioned above make it very difficult to have simple criteria for selecting mould fluxes for casting a certain grade of steel in a continuous casting machine. These difficulties led steelmakers and mould flux suppliers to select mould fluxes based mainly on plant trials. In the present work, a software to help in the analysis and development of mould fluxes for continuous casting was developed_ This software includes several models for prediction of mould flux viscosity and consumption. A mathematical model was also used to predict the heat flux through the mould flux. The proposed methodology was applied to continuous casting of crack sensitive steels_ Some of the results given by this software are presented, discussed and compared to plant data.
