The high production rates achieved from mass mining methods such as block caving, sublevel caving and longwall mining require large conveyor belts, trucking loops (diesel/electrical) and rail systems for ore handling. However, the ore handling systems used in mass mines introduce a significant amount of heat into the overall ventilation system, which may be problematic at depth or in mines located in hot climates.In particular, the heat load from a conveyor system is not always well understood and consists of various components, including frictional heat from idlers, heat from electrical motors, heat from the drive train and heat from broken rock transported on the conveyor system. This paper presents results from a study that investigated the heat introduced to the ventilation air from a large conveyor system. The conveyor system transports ore with a maximum virgin rock temperature of 41°C from a depth of over 1 km. Quite often the reserve assessor becomes enamored with the numbers gen- erated and forgets the basis for his assessment. The quality of the assess- ment can only be as good as the quality of the input data. The use of seismic data from the Gippsland Basin in assess- ing Esso/BHP's oil and gas reserves is an excellent example of this principle. By significantly improving the quality of seismic data, a much more reliable estimate of a field's reserve potential can be made. In addition, it provides the basis for further delineation drill- ing which, as recent experience in Gippsland has shown, often leads to increased reserves.

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the international seabed area (Area) and its resources are the common heritage of humanity (CHH). Patent rights can be incompatible with the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles because patent holders might charge unjustifiably high prices to license patented technology for exploring and exploiting the Area’s resources (creating a "patent holdup" situation), might choose not to license, or might license exclusively when doing so would contravene CHH principles. However, a reasonable patent licensing regime can contribute to sharing the benefits derived from the Area and promote environmental sustainability. Provisions of the UNCLOS that stipulated compulsory technology and financial transfers were removed in the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the UNCLOS (1994 Agreement), but to promote equity and sustainability I propose a voluntary licensing regime modeled on the concept of reasonable and non-discriminatory patent licensing (RAND) that has been used in other contexts. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) or another entity will need to coordinate and promote this licensing regime through governance of intellectual property (IP) derived from the Area. This proposed approach can better effectuate the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles.

ON the afternoon of Feb. 20 of this year a new volcano was born in the center of the State of Michoacan, Mexico, about 100 miles inland from the Pacific Coast. Creation of this new mountain - forming crater began on an almost flat cultivated field at the south margin of a small basin about a mile in diameter and having an altitude of approximately 6800 ft. above sea level. This basin is connected to a gently inclined plain that forms the Parangaricutiro valley, the chief town of this municipality, bearing the same name as the valley, being situated three miles from the site of the new crater. The village of Paracutin, from which the new volcano received its name, is about one mile to the northwest of the crater. From the City of Mexico to the volcano is a distance of 330 miles. The paved highway running from Mexico City to Guadalajara, by way of Toluca and Morelia, is left at Carapan; from here another paved branch highway goes to Uruapan. The town of Paracutin is reached by a narrow dirt road 18 miles from Uruapan and connects with a road leading to Parangaricutiro where horses may be hired for a 40-minute trip to a place where visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the volcano. It is possible to get within half a mile of the point of eruption in this manner.

Prior to the Coalbrook disaster in 1960, bord-and-pillar mining of the number two seam in the Witbank coalfields often resulted in small pillars with low factors of safety. At the Goedehoop Colliery, number two seam pillar stability is also affected by top and bottom coaling, while at Greenside Colliery, stability was further reduced by additional loading from a surface mineral residue deposit. This compromised the stability of the number two seam workings, impacting the safe mining of the overlying number four seam reserves. To extend the life of mine of both operations, an alternative risk management approach using designated enhanced monitoring districts was implemented to safely mine the number four seam reserves. This paper presents the use of geophone arrays to monitor micro-fracturing in number two seam pillars and the interburden between number two seam and number four seam, thereby enabling early detection of potential instability during overmining of the number two seam. Risk was assessed using fault and event tree analyses to determine acceptable failure probabilities. Automated seismic data processing distinguished micro-fracturing from noise, supported by extensive evacuation procedures for effective risk management. This approach facilitated the safe extraction of 4.70 Mt of number four seam coal. The study quantifies the efficacy of geophone monitoring in optimising coal recovery over low factors of safety pillars and assesses the application of Van der Merwe’s (2019) time-based formulae for pillar stability analysis for this project.

"The Alameda Corridor-East (ACE) Construction Authority awarded a $172.6 million contract to Walsh Construction Company (Walsh) for the construction of a 2.2 mi (3.5 km) long grade separation including a 1.4 mi (2.3 km) long trench that will allow Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and Amtrak passenger trains to operate below ground through the city of San Gabriel, Calif. The project is necessary as the ACE trade corridor accommodates approximately 60% of the shipping containers that move from San Pedro Bay, the busiest port facility in the western hemisphere, to the rest of the country via an extensive rail network. Rail traffic is expected to increase by as much as 160% by 2020, and the resultant delays to vehicular traffic is projected to increase by an estimated 300%. The San Gabriel Trench Project is designed to mitigate the effects of this increased train and vehicle traffic throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Malcolm Drilling Company (Malcolm) was selected by Walsh to perform the specialty foundation and ground improvement work for the San Gabriel Trench.This project is part of ACE’s program to create 22 grade separations and safety improvements at 39 grade crossings throughout the San Gabriel Valley. In addition to safety improvements that will eliminate crossing collisions and delays to emergency responders, the project will reduce vehicle congestion and emissions from passenger cars and trucks having to wait for passing trains, and the project will also reduce locomotive horn and crossing bell noise to local residents.Construction of this portion of the project began in late 2012, and it is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2017, having created approximately 9,000 jobs during this period. The project is being funded from Proposition 1B transportation bonds approved by California in 2006, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Measure “R,” and other local and federal funds. The overall project cost is estimated to be $313 million."

This study is a survey of the current "state-of-the-art" of commercially-available sonar tools to monitor the true shape of man-made cavities within the Hutchinson Salt of south-central Kansas. The work entailed ferreting out the available information, most of which is proprietary in nature; then examining actual existing conditions and arriving at a reasonable scientific evaluation of the method. Our studies were confined to one LPG field and two brine well operations in south-central Kansas. No field testing of any devices was performed, only questioning user firms, and studying cores, logs, and sonar surveys graciously made available by the companies we have contacted. Since these data are still somewhat proprietary, the company participants have asked that their company names be omitted from this presentation.

THERE are two distinct questions associated with the concept of temperature: one is practical, the other is theoretical. Our fundamental ideas of temperature come from our senses; we know what we mean by the words "hot" and "cold," or by saying one body is "hotter than another." But for scientific purposes words require definition. We are guided in this matter, as in all other scientific questions, by our knowledge of facts of observation. When two bodies at different temperatures are intimately associated, e.g., a hot stone is, dropped into a pail of water, our experience is that ultimately they come to the smile temperature as far as our senses can tell; the hot body becomes colder and the cold body hotter. In the case of a block of ice, immersed in, water, the ice melts, forming cold water, which then mixes with the other water, the final result being water colder than the original water. From our knowledge of the nature of heat phenomena, we learn that in this process one body loses, heat and the other gains heat, the condition of equilibrium being, one in which each body gains Is much heat as it loses. It is distinctly assumed in this statement that only two bodies are concerned in the transfer of heat, all other bodies being rendered in some way impervious to heat. The body that in the process loses heat is said to have the ?higher temperature" while the body that gains the heat is said to have the "lower temperature;" and, when thermal equilibrium is reached, the two bodies are said to have the "same temperature." Consequently, the temperature of a body may be defined, is it was by Maxwell, as "its thermal state considered with reference to its power of communicating heat to other bodies."

"The strength and mechanism of Portland cement prepared from stone coal vanadium slag were studied in this paper. Initially, the slag was used as silicon raw materials to prepare clinker. By blending the prepared clinker with gypsum, waste, and fly ash, a series of different grades cement got well prepared. All of performances of the cement were up to the requirements of China’s national standard. The hydration products and microstructure of cement were identified and analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. With the comparison of cement hydration characteristics at different ages, the strength formation mechanism of cement was clarified. The experimental results suggested that adding the fine materials (mainly waste and fly ash) to replace part of clinker would accelerate cement hydration, as it provided additional surfaces for the nucleation and growth of hydration products. And the hydration products were similar to ordinary Portland cement, mainly containing the amorphous calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H), acicular ettringite (AFt) and portlandite (CH). With hydration time increasing, the hydration products continuously covered the cement particles, resulting in a thicker surface layer. As a result, it gradually condensed into a dense structure block with small pores and smooth surfaces, which led to higher strength. In conclusion, using the vanadium slag to prepare Portland cement can realize the utilization of solid mineral wastes, which will bring huge ecological and economic benefits.INTRODUCTIONWith the development of China’s mining industry, more and more mineral waste residue is discharged every year. These solid wastes cause varieties of resources and environmental problems on people’s living area. While at the same time, the demands of cement are increasing with the remarkable development of the construction industry. This study of the relationship of the accumulation and drainage of oil to the structural conditions in the Wilmington oil field is presented with the hope that the data contained herein will aid in efficient exploita-tion of other fields where similar conditions exist. Certain non-metallic minerals are used widely as fillers in the manufacture of many Canadian products. The first part of this paper deals in a general way with deposits of such minerals and their mining, with the concentration and preparation of the minerals for market, with specifications of the consumers, and with methods of control of the products to meet the specifications. The second part of the paper de-scribes talc as a specific example of mineral filler. Its production and uses in Canada and the possibility of producing higher grades of talc are discussed. Some suggestions are made for meeting the needs for mineral fillers as Canada's industry expands. RELATIVELY few people are sufficiently aware of the vast and important role that is being played in our everyday lives by mineral fillers. A five-year effort by the ASTM subcommittee E10.14 on uranium resource evaluation has culminated in the approval of E901-82, Classification System for Uranium Resources (ASTM Standard E901-82, April 1983). The standard classification was prepared with participation of representatives from the US Department of Energy, the US Department of Interior's Geological Survey and Bureau Mines, utilities, and consultants. The classification a resource is based on level of knowledge and the economic producibility of the resource at a given time. Alphanumeric identifiers are used rather than words to avoid confusion with existing terms, definitions, and classifications. An example demonstrates the dynamic nature of the process of classification and attests to the necessity of addressing both the aggregate needs of broad-scale resource planning and the specific needs of individual property evaluation. Problems that remain infixing the classification a given uranium resource include uncertainty in estimating the quantity of undiscovered resources and resolving differences that may exist in deciding when the drill-hole spacing is adequate to determine the tonnage and grade of discovered resources.

Displacement and stress changes in cemented backfill and ore pillars at the Buick Mine, near Boss, MO, were monitored by engineers from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and The Doe Run Co., St Louis, MO. A test area in this room-and-pillar mine was backfilled to provide support when remnant ore pillars were mined. Objectives of this research were to evaluate the effect of backfill on mine stability, observe backfill conditions during pillar removal, and calibrate a numeric model to be used to design other areas of the mine. Relative vertical displacements in the backfill were measured with embedment strain gauges and vertical extensometers. Other types of instruments used were earth pressure cells (to identify loading trends in the backfill), borehole extensometers (to measure relative displacement changes in the mine roof and support pillars), and biaxial stressmeters (to measure stress changes in several support pillars and abutments). Two-and three-dimensional numeric codes were used to model the study area. With information from these codes and the installed instruments, two failed pillars were identified and rock mass properties were estimated.

This article deals with a project to reduce the preparation time and threading the coils in the input section of a pickling line coupled to the cold strip mill (PLTCM) at ArcelorMittal Vega. The project developed serves for the detection and elimination of bottlenecks in the input section. The project was conceived by the philosophy of the Theory of Constraints (TOC) and Lean Six Sigma (6 sigma), here seen as sequencing serial / parallel in the preparation and threading the coils. In this context, a proposal to modify the automatic sequencing and reduction of interruptions due to failure of the automation / equipment confirmed its effectiveness reducing the total time preparation time and threading the coils in the entry section by 15%. This project was developed without investment costs, bringing gains on the order of US$613,769.00.

Of the fossil fuels used for power generation coal is by far the most variable and complex in its properties. A thorough review of the characteristics of the coal to be fired is essential before boiler design can begin. Major parameters such as heating value, moisture content and ash properties will determine not only the boiler size and configuration, but also the performance of the unit with respect to the thermal efficiency, particulate and gaseous emissions, and unit availability and reliability. An example of a review completed on a large low-rank coal deposit for a power plant will be described.

"Steel bearing piles have long been used to carry high compressive, tensile and lateral loads. Such piles are most commonly tubular or ""H"" profile and are typically installed using percussive techniques. The noise and vibration associated with such installation techniques tends to preclude the use of steel bearing piles in urban and other sensitive areas.This paper describes the design and construction of an innovative new road bridge in Milton Keynes, UK. The steel bearing piles were required to continue out of the ground to form the bridge columns and abutments and then be cast directly into the soffit of the reinforced concrete bridge deck. This project was to be the first time in the UK, that this form of bridge design had been used.The paper shows how new installation techniques allowed the designers to use these high capacity steel elements in a sensitive urban environment without the use of percussive or vibratory installation techniques. Finally the paper shows how these quiet and vibration-less installation techniques can be extended to other applications.A UNIQUE BRIDGE SUPPORTED ON ""BOXED SHEET PILES""CONCEPT HISTORYThere are over 700 bridges in Milton Keynes. Concrete is the dominant construction material, most are single span with massive parallel wing wall retaining abutments. All have a certain uniformity of aesthetic design. Pell Frischmann Consultants Ltd (PFC) proposed to the client, English Partnerships (EP), that an ""integral bridge"" with a slender open appearance would be an appropriate aesthetic form for a new highways bridge, within the district of Westcroft (figure 1). The concept required that the bearing piles be continued up out of the ground to form the bridge columns and abutments. Four rows with four piles in each row were suggested. Each would then be cast directly into the reinforced concrete bridge deck forming a moment connection (figure 2). This concept meant that a single continuous steel structural member would replace traditional reinforced concrete bored piles, pile caps and piers. This member would carry vertical and lateral loads.
