"INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis report supplements a previous report on work done in this same area 4/ but covers only the period from November 1945 to November 1946. The project was established in 1943 to investigate magnetite deposits in the northwestern Adirondacks by geophysical surveying and diamond-drilling for the purpose of increasing iron production in the eastern United States.In its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the primary objective of the Bureau of Mines is the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, that they may make the greatest possible contribution to our national security and economy. The policy of the Bureau is to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as possible after its conclusion. Maps showing the detailed magnetic surveys of the deposits and anomalies discussed in this report are on open file at the offices of the Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md., and at the University of the State of New York in the office of the Director of the State Science Service, Educational Building, Albany, N. Helical piles have become a widely used deep foundation system in recent years due to their many inherent advantages. The cone penetration test (CPT) is commonly used in geotechnical practice to evaluate subsurface conditions for deep foundation design as the method provides a continuous soil profile in a short amount of time, measures in-situ soil strength, and in many ways behaves similar to a “mini pile” during penetration. In the CPT test, an instrumented cone is hydraulically advanced into the soil at a constant rate. As the cone is advanced, strain gauges embedded in the cone body continuously measure the tip resistance and side friction. In addition, a piezometer element is commonly used to measure the (dynamic) pore water pressure in the soil as the cone is advanced. A study was conducted comparing the CPT tip resistance to helical pile installation torque and capacity. In this paper, the outcome of this study was compared with historical data of helical pile installation torque records, static analysis predictions using commonly used techniques, and pile load test results over a wide range of soil conditions. A literature review was also conducted where a comparison was made for CPT tip resistance and helical pile installation torque data with previously published correlations.

To address coal refuse tailings storage needs for a mine operation in western Canada, a feasible solution was to convert excavated open pits into tailings cells. A slope stability investigation and design study were completed to determine the necessary width and slope geometry for in-situ native plugs as the impoundment embankment. The native plugs separate the previous open pit from the current active open pit. This configuration allows for the deposition of refuse tailings in the previous pit while allowing mining to safely continue “downstream” of the temporary impoundment. As mining progresses, each subsequent pit will be filled with refuse tailings; thereby, buttressing the upstream slope of the previous native plug. Although these cells are excavated, and the timeframe for downstream exposure is relatively limited, the native plugs are classified as dams and must be designed to meet applicable safety of dam standards since they impound water and tails above mining personnel in the subsequent open pit. The presentation and paper will discuss the investigation and analysis conducted to develop the geotechnical and hydrogeological design recommendations.

Conductivity is a typical physico-chemical property that has a substantial effect on electrical energy consumption in the electrorefining process. The objective of this study was to examine the validity of regression models predicting the conductivity of industrial copper electrorefining electrolytes. The models were based on data measured with synthetic solutions on a laboratory scale. The variables included in the models were temperature and the concentrations of copper, nickel, arsenic and sulfuric acid. Both first-order and combined effects of the variables were investigated. The measured data were analyzed using MODDE 8.0 modeling and design software. The validity of the models was investigated by comparing the predicted values with tankhouse conductivity measurements taken at the Boliden Harjavalta Copper Refinery in Pori in Finland. During the tankhouse tests, the conductivity and temperature of the industrial electrolyte were measured, and the composition of the electrolyte was analyzed. The measured conductivity values were compared with the predicted conductivities calculated using the developed models. The conductivity model developed in this paper was shown to be more accurate than previous models and suitable for industrial use.

This paper describes the process employed and the work undertaken to enable the surrender of the mine permit relating to the two tailings deposits at the abandoned Red Mountain Mine site near Rossland, BC. The first phase of the work undertaken was to provide urgent remedial work for protection of the environment, primarily through rehabilitation or replacement of surface water drainage systems. The second phase was to up-grade the water management systems to the appropriate level given their consequences of failure. The final phase of work is to ensure long term geotechnical stability of the facilities to the same level of risk. Establishment of a sustaining fund will facilitate long term monitoring and maintenance of the facilities.

"In 2009, storm surge from Hurricane Sandy inundated the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant located at El. +4 to +12 (+1.2 to +3.6 m) in East Rockaway, Long Island, NY. With all systems down, raw sewage water mixed in the floodwaters. A recurrence of such an event being unacceptable, and in view of rising future sea levels, a flood protection project was developed by Nassau County with funding coming in large part from the federally funded Sandy Rescue Fund. Designed by Arcadis/Hazen & Sawyer Engineers J.V., the protection took the form of a perimeter barrier capable of withstanding future storm surge. Due to limitations imposed by property lines and existing facilities, a levee design with three different types of cross section was developed to adapt to each location, adding construction complexity. The Long Island subsurface is characterized by beach sand extending to great depth. The clay required for the core and levee cover therefore had to be brought in from out of state. A thin silty clay layer at El. -23 to -25 (-7.0 to -7.6 m) served as an aquitard. The under-seepage was reduced by a hanging cut-off wall designed as a vibrated beam thin wall and filled with a salt water resistant, low permeability, self-hardening slurry.INTRODUCTIONOn October 29, 2009, Hurricane Sandy hit New York City, with a devastating effect on the region. The low lying Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) (Fig. 1) serving Nassau County on Long Island was submerged (Fig. 2). All basements and underground mechanical facilities were flooded (Fig. 3) and millions gallons of effluent were released into the waters of the nearby Hewlett Bay which connects via other small waterways to the Atlantic Ocean."

In 1976, a decision was made to install a conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 miles) from the new Eisenhower Partnership Mine to Twin Buttes. The system, supplied and installed by Cable Belt Limited, of England, represents a radical departure from conventional conveyor systems. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes while the belt acts only as the carrying medium. Features of the system are a single 2240 kw (3000 hp) drive and a 60° angle bend. Construction was completed in two years. Full production was attained after several months' operation.

In order to understand the flotation kinetic behavior of coal and associated mineral matter, a detailed investigation was conducted in a 2-liter Denver flotation cell using three high sulfur coals at three feed sizes, minus 28. 100 and 200 mesh. Subsequently. the flotation products were sieved into different size fractions and analyzed for their ash and pyritic sulfur content in order to delineate the effect of particle size on the rate at which each constituent floats. The results were tested with several different flotation kinetic models and the best model for coal was then chosen. The flotation rate constant and the ultimate recovery calculated from a kinetic model were used to delineate the effect of particle size, collector (dodecane) and frother (MIBC) dosages on the flotation kinetics of coal, ash and pyrite.

This is a tutorial paper on industrially successful approaches for nonlinear process monitoring. Online process monitoring is essential to continuous operation of plants at high efficiency. The problem of process monitoring is one where an impending but undesirable process condition has to be identified and used to alert process engineers. This problem has traditionally been solved by practicing engineers using statistical techniques that detect a change in the underlying correlation structure of process variables. For linear correlation structures, algorithms such as principal components analysis, independent component analysis and partial least squares have been proposed. However, many industrial processes exhibit nonlinear correlation structure between the process variables. In this tutorial we describe various nonlinear monitoring techniques and elaborate on two recently developed methods, namely Support Vector Machine and Local Linear Embedding. The two methods are evaluated by application on two experimental case studies, a SAG mill and a polymer extruder.

"Electronic waste (e-waste) is a collective name given to discarded electronic devices such as Television, Cellular Phones and Personal Computers. Among the heterogeneous metals present in the e-waste are the base metals: copper, aluminium, nickel, tin, zinc, iron and precious metals: gold, silver, palladium, platinum apart from several hazardous and halogens metals. Hence there is a need to recover these metals from electronic scrap by recycling and then re-use, which can meet large amount of metals demand. Hydrometallurgical processing was employed for the recovery of metals from television printed circuit board (TV PCB). Different lixiviants such as hydrochloric acid, Sulphuric acid, and nitric acid were used to understand the dissolution behavior of copper, iron and lead present in the TV PCB. Effect of increasing concentration of nitric acid was also studied. Selective recovery of tin over 95% in the form of tin oxide was precipitated. The precipitated tin oxide was identified by X-ray diffraction technique. Tin oxide of purity more than 99.9% was obtained.IntroductionThe electrical and electronic industries comprising computers, television, mobiles, etc, which are manufactured utilizing printed circuit, boards, capacitors, resistance, soldering material etc. During production, at the end-of service life and degradation due to the advanced version with latest features generate valuable metallic and non-metallic constituents. European Union Council on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has classified these into different categories as listed in Table 1 [Streicher-Porte et al., 2005]. Among these the information technology, telecommunications and consumer equipment constitute electronic waste (e-waste) [EC, 2002]. Almost all e-waste consists of an integrated part of printed circuit boards which is a valuable source of several metals such as copper, tin, lead, aluminium, iron, silver, gold, platinum etc. [Relay et al., 1990]."

"This paper discusses the exploitation of shallow underground deposits in a very altered geological environment. The methods, their adaptation to local conditions, their evolution, dilution control and recovery of mineral reserves will all be dealt with.The recovery of the B zone crown pillar under 40 m of till that was originally saturated with water, is of particular interest.Future underground development and production start-up of the A-2 zone, organization of mining operations, mechanical services, group incentives and safety practices will also be given.IntroductionThe underground deposit of B zone is not very deep. A 300 m shaft provides access to the mine. In addition , exploitation sublevels are developed every 20 m and are linked by a service ramp. The overburden located on top of the deposit is 40 m thick and is composed of a very dense till.A detailed work plan was initiated to permit mining under the overburden. To do so, it was imperative that efficient methods be developed. At a time when an accident at the Belmoral Mine shook the mining world , it was a task to convince provincial authorities that it was safe.While B zone was being mined , development began in the A-2 zone deposit which has recently been put into production (Figs. 1 and 2).The intention of this paper is to provide an outline of the mining method s and their particular aspects. To do so, some of the mine services are described and a brief outline of the under ground department is provided."

Underground mines are complex environments that require continuous control and monitoring actions in order to have a safe and efficient operation. At Nexa, the goal of achieving "zero harm" promotes the constant search for in its operational processes. Currently, there are manual activities that reduce the agility and precision when working with information from inside the mine, using mostly radio communication and management by sight of badges as an operational standard. This project was born in the context of increasing the operational safety of underground mines, bringing gains to the entire process involving the underground.

Unusual mining conditions prevail in the State of Washington because the majority of the coal seams lie on extra steep dips, and the roof and floor of the seams are of such a character as to require an excessive amount of timber- ing. The seams as a rule give off a considerable amount of methane, which makes good ventilation imperative. Due to physical conditions, supervision is costly and travel about the workings is difficult. Because of the facts stated, the accident rate has been above the average, and for some time considerable thought has been given the idea of making promotion of safety in and about the mines a responsibility to be shared equally by the employees and the management. With this idea in mind the legislature of the State of Washington, turing March, 1927, passed laws providing that safety committees be selected to function at the coal mines of the State and at the same time recognizing the fact that first-aid education is an integral part of any safety movement; legislation was passed making it mandatory to have all persons in and about the ines trained in first-aid administration. The provisions of the State mining law3 are as follows: "In every mine a general safety committee shall be selected, composed of the mine superintendent or manager of mines, one man selected by the employees or any association of employees in or around said mine, and a third member selected by these two. "The general safety committee shall elect one of the members to act as chairman and one to act as secretary. The duties of the chairman shall be to preside at all meetings of the general safety committee, enforce its rules and regulations and see that its business is conducted in a prompt and business-like manner. The secretary shall keep an accurate written record of the proceedings of all meetings, conduct its correspondence and post notices of regular and special meetings and other matters pertaining to safety. The duties of the general safety committee shall be to investigate all serious and fatal accidents; make bi-monthly.

This in turn increases the focus on costs.Increasing demands on quality and service puts pressure on delivery performance - the right product at the right time. This in turn reduces the scope for errors and delays - and this in turn increases focus on equipment reliability. In the mining industry, both costs and equipment reliability have one significant thing in common - they are driven substantially by maintenance.

"The objective of this paper is to review the coal basins in the Canadian part of the Western Cordillera to aid their understanding, and to aid in finding and proving places of economic coal mining potential. Coal occurs in eugeosynclinal basins in the Western Cordillera which evolved through three stages: -from systems of volcanic arcs in the Late Jurassic to mid-Cretaceous; -through an intermediate stage with deposition in increasingly restricted successor basins in Jurassic to Early Tertiary; -to a continental stage by the Eocene. Minor coal seams occur usually in late volcanic arc stage sediments bur they can be locally thick as they are on Queen Charlotte Islands. Successor basins usually show a marine-paralic-limnic evolurion. Signijicanr coal deposits occur in the tarter two sequences in the Whirehorse (Tantalus) and Bowser (SkeenaSusrur) basins. Currenr activities are intensive in the more accessible Bowser Basin, for example at Telkwa, Susrut River and on the Groundhog coal field. On Vancouver Island major coal seams occur in cyclic sediments, but the more accessible deposits are mined our. Exploration renewed recently in the less accessible northern part of the Island, for example Quinsam, for surface mineable coal. The Western Cordillera is a mosaic of allochtonous tectonic blocks. They originated from the south and were displaced northward by several hundred kilometres. Many Tertiary coal basins are related to strikeslip transcurrent faults along which the later part of displacement took place, for example the Dawson coal area in the Tintina Trench. Tensional and dipslip normal faulting also created or enhanced sites for thick peat accumulation. For example at Hat Creek 280 m of coal occur in a 550 m section. Secondary structures are often better exploration targets than the main fault zones. Pluvial and alluvial fan environments away from the main drainage are usually the favourable sites for thicker and cleaner coal deposition."

Electrochemical measurements have been made of the activity of oxygen in copper and its alloys with silver and tin at 1100" and 1200°C. The galvanic cell used was Pt, Ni + NiO/solid ellectrolyte/[O] in metal, cermet, Pt The results do not support any of the equations so far designed for predicting the activities of dilute solutes in ternary solutions from activities in the corresponding binaries. If, however, a quasichemical equation is used with the coordination number set to unity, agreement between observed and calculated activities shows that this empirical relationship can be useful over a fair range of conditions. SEVERAL solution models have been proposed for predicting the activity coefficients of dilute solutes in ternary alloys from a knowledge of the three binary systems involved. Alcock and Richardson1 have shown that a regular model, and a quasichemical model,' in which the dissolved oxygen is coordinated with eight or so metal atoms, can reasonably predict the behavior of both metal and nonmetal solutes when the heats of solution of the solute in the separate solvent metals are similar. But when this is not so, neither model gives useful predictions unless coordination numbers of one or two are assumed. Wada and Saito3 subsequently adopted a similar model to derive the interaction energies for two dilute solutes in a solvent metal. Belton and Tankins4 Rave proposed both regular and quasichemical type models in which the oxygen is bound into molecular species, such as NiO and CuO in mixtures of Cu + Ni + 0. However, their models have only been tested on systems in which the excess free energies of solution of the solute in the two separate metals differ by a few kilocalories. Ope of the reasons why more advanced models have not been proposed is because few complete sets of data exist for ternary systems in which the solute behaves very differently in the two separate metals. For this reason measurements have been made of the activities of oxygen dissolved in Cu + Ag and Cu + Sn. Measurements on both systems were made by means of the electrochemical cell, Pt, Ni + NiO/solid electrolyte/O(in alloy), cermet,Pt [1] The activity of oxygen was calculated from the electromotive force and the standard free energy of formation of NiO, which is accurately known.5 Before investigating the alloys, studies were made of oxygen in copper to test the reliability of the cell and to check the thermodynamics of the system. Of the previous studies those by Sano and Sakao,6 Tom-linson and Young,7 and Tankins et al.8,7 have been made with gas-metal equilibrium techniques; those by Diaz and Richardson,9 Osterwald,10 wilder," Plusch-kell and Engell,12 Rickert and wagner,13 and Fischer and Ackermann14 have been made by electrochemical methods. EXPERIMENTAL The apparatus employed was the same as described previously,9 apart from slight modification. The molten sample of approximately 40 g was held in a high grade alumina crucible 1.2 in. OD and 1.6 in. long. The solid electrolytes were ZrO2 + 7½ wt pct CaO and ZrO2 + 15 wt pct CaO; the tubes 4 in. OD and 6 in. long were supplied by the Zirconia Corp. of America. They were closed (flat) at one end. In one experiment with Cu + O, both electrolytes were used in the cell at the same time. The reference electrodes inside the electrolyte tubes consisted of a mixture of Ni + NiO. They were made by mixing the powdered materials and pressing them manually into the ends of the tubes, with a platinum lead embedded in them. The tubes were then sintered overnight in the electromotive force apparatus at 1100°C. By sintering the powders inside the tubes (instead of using a presintered pellet9) better contacts were obtained between the electrolyte, the powder, and the platinum lead. Troubles arising from polarization9 were thus much reduced. The electromotive force was measured by a Vibron Electrometer with an input impedence of 1017 ohm; the temperature was measured with a Pt:13 pct Rh + Pt thermocouple protected by an alumina sheath. The couple was calibrated against the melting point of copper. The cermet conducting lead of Cr + 28 pct Al2O3, previously found to be satisfactory9 for use with Cu + 0 was also found satisfactory with Cu + Ag + 0 and Cu + Sn + 0. Superficial oxidation was observed, but it did not interfere with the working of the cell. The reaction tube containing the cell was closed at each end with cooled brass heads and suspended in a platinum resistance furnace. The tube was electrically shielded by a Kanthal A-1 ribbon which was wound round it, and the ribbon was protected by a N2 atmosphere between the furnace and the reaction tube. The cell was protected by a stream of high purity argon which was dried and passed through copper gauze at 450°C and titanium chips at 900°C. All the metals used were of spectrographic standard. The Ringelmann Smoke Chart fulfills an important need in smoke abatement work and in certain problems in the combustion of fuels. A knowledge of its history and method of preparation is, therefore, of interest to many. Since instructions on its use are not shown on the recent edition of the chart, those included in this revision of the previous Bureau of Mines publication now are a necessary complement to the chart, More detail regarding the use of the chart is included than was given in the earlier version.

The Saganoseki Refinery of Pan Pacific Copper Co., Ltd., Japan, introduced the ISA 2000® process in 2006 to improve product quality and productivity. After resolving various technical difficulties associated with the process, a current density of 325 A/m2 and electrolytic copper production of 234 000 tons per year were realized in 2018. In recent years, Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery has promoted treatment of recycled materials in addition to copper concentrates. Accordingly, the amount and type of impurities charged to the smelting process have tended to increase. In the electrorefining process, impurities such as nickel and antimony cause anodic passivation and formation of suspended solids, respectively. Although these undesirable phenomena can be avoided by controlling impurity concentrations in the anode and electrolyte to appropriate ranges, this also limits the choice of recycled materials that can be processed by the smelter. To achieve both stable operation of the electrorefining process and flexibility in treatment of recycled materials in the smelting process, Saganoseki Refinery improved the capacity of the impurity recovery processes during 2016 to 2018. This paper describes the expansion of the purification plant to remove and recover nickel and antimony. INTRODUCTION The Saganoseki Refinery of Pan Pacific Copper Co., Ltd., Japan, introduced the ISA 2000® (wax- less permanent cathode method) in 2006 to improve product quality and productivity. Since then, the refinery has gradually increased current density, and has been committed to establishing stable operation and high productivity via various improvements related to the electrolyte filtration and additive management systems. Figure 1 shows the trends of current density and current efficiency at the refinery. Although the current efficiency temporarily dropped when the current density was raised to 322 A/m2, it consistently exceeded 97% thereafter. At present, stable operation at 325 A/m2 has been achieved and continues.
