Three quarters of recent increases in world oil reserve estimates since 1990 have been attributed lo ‘better reservoir management' rather than to new discoveries. For the United Kingdom Continental Shelf (IJKCS), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has on 2.2 bn barrels of extra oil protection through effective reservoir management of existing producing reservoirs. Past practise has been to manage petroleum exploitation on a departmental basis, with exploration assessing and ranking prospects, reservoir engineering assessing development plans and production facilities implementing plans. Any reservations necessary might involve restarting the project evaluation from scratch. Current practice is to manage an operation through asset management teams involving all disciplines. It is hoped that this approach will not only eliminate fruitless directions of effort, but the quality of work in each discipline will benefit from interaction. That is, the result of a team effort is greater than the sum of individual efforts. To date, this is most apparent with the interaction between geology, reservoir geophysics and reservoir engineering through reservoir characterization. This is the current area of greatest effort, with improved geophysical technology and computer power leading to more and more detailed and complex simulation models. The equally important interaction of reservoir engineering and production and facilities engineering applied to fields in decline has not yet achieved the prominence that it deserves. Establishing priorities in reservoir management requires the very critical evaluation of the relative value of objectives. The fact that something can be done (3-D seismic, 4-D seismic, multilateral wells, or three phase multi-layer well test analyses etc) is not a good reason for doing it. Reservoir management should he a study of value added versus cost for any activity possible or proposed. Both in the areas of reservoir data acquisition and of assessing opportunities in the period of production decline, it is likely that expert systems will need to be developed with the associated base of experience, understanding and know ledge. A n other area for the future is the elusive target of ‘enhanced ’ oil recovery, as distinct from ‘improved’ oil recovery. The most likely route forward here is the incessant scrutiny of reservoir regions and units within fields for their suitability for pilot schemes for advanced recovery techniques implemented at a favourable time. Finally, the reduction of costs, the maintenance of low. but viable rates of production and the threat of abandonment costs will increase reserves. An increase which may have appeared insignificant in the past is now more valuable.

MINE surveying and engineering at the various properties of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company has developed and increased in importance steadily as mining methods have changed and expanded, both in the development of ore bodies and in the methods and styles of stoping. Most important to satisfactory engineering practice, and secondary -only to accuracy and precision, is the preservation of all data relative to surveys and calculations so that it is readily available for use at all times and in -such form that it is permanent, easily found, and usable. The first consideration for a proper, accurate, and practical start for surveys and efficient engineering at any property is an accurate triangulation net and system of co-ordinates. This has been our practice and the first step seas to select a base line, readily accessible and easily measured, situated preferably on an even grade where the difference of elevation between the two -end monuments was not too great and -the distance was long enough for practical use. Permanent concrete monuments were built for these base-line points so constructed that they could be easily recognized and were visible. Precise levels were run on this base 'line and the elevation (sea level datum) if possible was established at each end monument. The distance was carefully measured many times, back and forward, by using a tape that had been standardized by the National Bureau of Standards. Increasingly, geologists use geostatistical methods to evaluate drilling programs. The complexity of the methods varies with the nature of the available sample information, the objective of the statistical analysis and the geologist's experience. Occasionally, estimating the average sample grade is all that is required. In other instances a semivariogram calculation may be considered. If sufficient data is available, the geologist may wish to estimate blocks or panels of complex shape, using the kriging method of evaluation. Historically, the use of geostatistics by geologists has been limited by a number of factors, most significant being the difficulty in accessing and using computer programs needed to complete the necessary studies. Geologists are often working in remote areas from which electronic communication is unreliable, if not impossible. Even when access to computer programs is technically possible, the costs incurred in accessing and using these programs are often considered prohibitive. In many instances using the programs requires an understanding of computer systems far beyond that which a field geologist can justifiably be interested in acquiring and maintaining.

"The process modeling and simulation studies aim for better process operation and favorable environmental impact. The objective of this work is to set up a simulation model of the Assarel copper flotation circuit for planning and optimization of the process with the aim of increased metal recovery. The model is parameterized based on laboratory flotation tests of ore samples from the Assarel mine together with mineralogical studies by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA). A combination of several techniques allows reliable identification of mineralogical composition of the selected samples. The changes in the proportion between sulfide minerals in various products along the circuit have been also documented. Further, this information is used in the simulation model and in data reconciliation procedures for establishing mass balance. The simulation accuracy is studied by comparing the simulations with the plant survey based mass balance. Constructed simulation model can be used to run alternative process scenarios. As an example, the flotation circuit performance with different reagent regimes is simulated based on data from batch flotation tests. Two reagents were considered for this purpose, dithiocarbamate-based one and xanthogen formate/mercaptan blend. It has been revealed that these reagents do not have the same influence on the selective flotation. The one improves flotation of gold and overall recovery but without notable selective action. In contrast, the other showed better selectivity towards copper, rejecting more gangue and lowering gold recovery. The model is also applicable for process optimization studies with different feed compositions, flowrates and circuit configurations. INTRODUCTION In the pursuit for elevated technological indicators, finding an optimal set of process parameters fully utilizing the potential of the equipment is a key factor to success. Over the past decades, there has been a substantial development in flotation circuit optimization through performance benchmarking using metallurgical modelling and steady-state computer simulation. Practical simulation engineering tools are based on experimental data obtained from laboratory tests and from plant surveys and operation data. With the help of flotation models, it is possible to study grade-recovery response with different feed compositions and throughputs, and with various cell-operating parameters, as well as to evaluate and design different flowsheet configurations. Outotec’s HSC Chemistry® software, which incorporates simulation and mass balancing modules alongside with several other tools, can assist with this optimization (Mattsson et al., 2015)."

This paper deals with the power plant at Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd., Cassiar, B.C. It discusses the units installed in the plant, the distribution of power and the costs involved. The efficiencies and economics of this power plant are considered to be somewhat better than average. Introduction C ASSIAR Asbestos Corporation's power plant had its inception in 1952 with a 15-by 15-ft. log cabin containing two International Harvester diesel generator sets of 50 kw. total generating capacity. Over the years, it has grown to its present size -an 80 by 82 ft. by 35-ft.-high rigid-frame Butler building housing eight 2,300-volt diesel generating sets, a 2,300-volt distributing switchboard, a 550-volt auxiliary panel, three air compressors, six heat exchangers and other related equipment. The units in the power plant, numbered according to their order of placement, are rated as shown in Table I. The total generating capacity of the plant is 3,673 kw. The design and planning for the construction of a new passageway to improve access and circulation to better accommodate anticipated increased passenger flow within Grand Central—42nd Street Station. The passageway includes the break-in of an over 100-year-old station cavern with an innovative design implementing a protective structure above the existing track to allow for safe train operations and passenger circulation during construction. Construction of the new passageway follows the Sequential Excavation Method. This paper will present the innovative solutions that went into the preliminary design and planning considering construction access, site logistics, risk management, structural retrofitting, instrumentation and monitoring, and impact assessments.

On the first of July, 2012, the Australian GovernmentÆs Clean Energy Act commenced. From this point, a price of $23/t of CO2-e will apply to facilities that trip the liability threshold. This first part of this paper concentrates on the mechanics of the Clean Energy Future legislation and how it will be applied to the mining and mineral processing industry.The second part of this paper contains analysis of the data presented for typical mine operations. Methodologies for constructing a carbon strategy are also presented. This will entail determining what the objectives of the carbon strategy are, and defining what the strategic priorities for a business should be. An action plan to address the risks identified from the Clean Energy Act is also developed as part of the strategy.Details such as the advantages and disadvantages of opting into the carbon price scheme for liquid fuels are shown. "INTRODUCTION Cyanide heap leaching of gold ores in areas with extremely low winter temperatures requires special considerations to prevent freezing of the leach solution. Factors that impact the solution temperature include ore temperature at the time of stacking and during operation, burial of drip irrigation lines, use of geomembrane covers, and heating of the leach solution. Thermodynamic modeling was performed to simulate expected ore and solution temperatures under different operating strategies for Kaminak Gold’s Coffee Gold project in the Yukon Territory. Mean monthly temperatures at the site ranged from a low of -22.5oC to a high of 13.6oC, while in situ ore temperatures ranged from -0.5 to about -1.5oC. The modeling results were used to optimize the operational parameters and indicated that a combination of drip line burial and heating of the leach solution during the winter months was required to maintain solution temperatures above freezing during the initial years of stacking, although as the size of the heap increased, heating was no longer necessary. MODELING OBJECTIVES The successful operation of a cyanide heap leach under extremely cold winter temperatures requires the implementation of operational strategies to prevent freezing of the leach solution and the ore within the heap. Thermodynamic modeling of the heap provides the means to quantify the effectiveness of these different operational parameters on maintaining the required operating temperatures to avoid freezing within the heap. The operational parameters that were evaluated with the model included: • Burial depth of irrigation lines to prevent freezing during the winter months; • Variation in the temperature of the applied leach solution (to simulate heating of recirculated solution); • Variation in the rate of irrigation including seasonal variations between winter and summer months; • Seasonal versus year-round stacking of ore (to simulate the impact of the initial temperature of each ore layer as it is stacked); • Seasonal versus year-round crushing and stockpiling of ore, including the option to stockpile ore on the leach pad in the winter (i.e. stack but not leach fresh ore in winter); • Start date for seasonal stacking; • Variation of the heap geometry over time (both vertical and lateral expansion) and the associated heat storage within the heap; • Use of thermal covers (gravel or geomembrane) over the ore during the winter months; and • Effect of crush size on heat loss during crushing, stockpiling and stacking."

In many areas of the United States much of the most readily minable coal is nearing depletion, while at the same time, increased national attention is being given to coal as a major alternate energy source. If some of the thinner, more erratic, deeper and lower quality coals, which comprise the great bulk of U.S. resources, are to be mined efficiently and economically, greater attention must be devoted to careful planning of mines and to preparation facilities. One of the cornerstones to careful and successful mine planning is precise knowledge of coal thickness and areal distribution, roof and floor quality, and seam quality. Data on which this knowledge is based are obtained from various borehole techniques and, in some cases, seismic methods. Despite the many technical innovations that have been made in acquiring subsurface data, little attention has been given to the problem of systematic storage and retrieval procedures of the data and assembling them in a form that can be used for various computer mapping programs now available. (See Bilter and Martin, 1977; Bryant and Zobrist, 1977 and Farrell and Wherry, 1978). The purpose of this paper is to describe a series of user oriented programs developed over the past five years which are specifically designed for precise logging of rock core, accurate storage and retrieval of this data, correlation of seams between logs, tagging seams, computer assisted data posting of maps and preparing maps and profile sections for report illustrations. The entire system stresses increased precision and speed for a series of operations which are now largely manual, time consuming and prone to error.

The Bureau of Mines used the Burnett method and apparatus to determine the compressibility factors for helium and carbon dioxide mixtures at 0°, 10°, 20°, 23°, and 35° C and to pressures of 900 psia. Tables of compressibility factors and approximations of the virial coefficients are presented for seven binary mixtures as well as for helium and carbon dioxide. The results compare favorably with existing data.

"This paper traces the development of Ontario 's cap lamp standard. Over the years, numerous Coroner's Juries investigating fatal mine accidents have made recommendations with respect to underground lighting. As well, recommendations to improve mine lighting have been made by two Commissions, investigating mine safety in Ontario.During the past few years, the performance of any cap lamp worn by miners involved in serious accidents, have been measured by the Mining Heal/h and Safety Branch. Large variations in light output were found between and among cap lamp types. These variations have been attributed to the lack of quality control on the bulbs, design of the cap lamp head piece and in some cases, poor maintenance.In 1986, a series of underground tests were conducted to establish the minimum light output from cap lamps required to visually identify loose ground. The results of these tests indicated that a cap lamp should produce a minimum peak illuminance of 1500 lux measured at 1.2 metres from the light source. On May 30, 1987, Ontario became the first province in Canada to legislate the minimum amount of light required to visually assess ground conditions. INTRODUCTIONPoor lighting has been identified as a factor which can contribute to mining accidents. Over the past decade, several Coroner's Juries as a result of inquests into mining fatalities, have recommended improved lighting in mines.The Joint Federal-Provincial Inquiry Commission into Safety of Mines and Mining Plants in Ontario, was appointed to report upon the adequacy of existing arrangements and practice s that may affect safety. This Commission completed their report in April 1981, and recommended that inadequate lighting be investigated as a possible cause of all reportable underground accidents, and that a comprehensive research programinto mine lighting be undertaken.In response to the first recommendation, the Mining Health and Safety Branch of the Ministry of Labour, hereafter referred to as the Branch, initiated a program to measure lighting levels in all fatal accident investigations where inadequate lighting was a possible factor."

"Blast fumes are one of the major sources for NOx in underground mines. In 2016, the Occupational Exposure Limits for NOx in Germany were reduced by 90%. The task is to keep re-entry times after blasting at the present level and thereby ensure an economic operation of the mine. Measurements show that using ventilation solely is not sufficient. A new approach to reduce NOx from blast fumes is described. Laboratory experiments were performed and a reduction of NOx was observed. Measurements were conducted at an explosive factory’s testing facility and in an underground mine at blasting operations. INTRODUCTION Whether for production of ore or for drift development, the processes in an underground mine are always the same: 1) fracturing the rock, 2) loading the pile, 3) support the resulting cavity. The fracturing of the rock can be done mechanically, by cutting, for example by using continuous miners or tunnel boring machines, or by drilling and blasting. Drilling and blasting is more flexible than mechanical driving, as it can be used independently of the rock strength. Furthermore, this driving method allows a more flexible reaction to changes in geological and/or operational conditions. Thus, underground mining and blasting are almost inextricably linked with each other, and regardless of the size and level of technology of the mine, blasting is hardly avoidable. Depending on the mining method chosen and the existing framework conditions, such as the mechanical properties of the rock or the availability of machinery, blasting is an integral part of daily operations. Even in mines where blasting is not part of regular operations, it cannot be completely avoided. The blast fumes generated by the explosions are, in addition to diesel engine emissions, one of the two main sources of emissions of nitrous gases underground. Up to now, state of the art for dealing with blast fumes is ventilation. The fumes are diluted with fresh air and ventilated out of the mine. This treatment of blast fumes is more than sufficient with the former German Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL). The adaption of the OEL in Germany to the recommendations of the Committee on Occupational Exposure Limits (SCOEL), a committee of the European Commission, leads to big challenges for the mining industry in reducing the concentrations of these gases at the workplaces underground. On its meeting on May 2nd and 3rd 2016, the Committee on Hazardous Substances (Ausschuss für Gefahrstoffe, AGS), an advisory body of the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS), advised the BMAS to copy the OEL, as recommended by the SCOEL, to the Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances (TRGS 900). BMAS followed this advice, consequently the new OEL where published on November 4th 2016 and became part of the TRGS 900. Table 1 shows the former and new OEL for Germany. These new OEL became law after publishing, but two exceptions were made: For tunneling operations, they became law on October 31st 2017, for mining operations they will become law on October 31st 2021 (BAuA, 2004, 2016, 2017)."

"The Analysis of Retreat l\.fining Pillar Stability (ARJ\1PS) and the Lal\.fodel programs have been used successfully in the U.S. for designing safe pillar recovery operations for many years. However, the recent Crandall Canyon l\.fine collapse showed that further research is required to improve the pillar design for recovery under deep cover. To this end, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the West Virginia University (WVU) l\.fining Engineering Department have been working together to improve both the ARJ\1PS and the Lal\.fodel programs.This paper compares and analyzes the overburden loads calculated by ARJ\1PS 2002, the new ARJ\1PS 2010, and the Lal\.fodel program with regard to the retreat pillar line, the gob, and the barrier pillars. The analysis shows a number of distinct differences between the ARJ\1PS and Lal\.fodel loading distributions. Ultimately, the programs, with their distinctive load distributions, are used to analyze a database of 52 deep cover pillar retreat case studies, and the ability of each program to discriminate between successful and unsuccessful retreat pillar plans is evaluated.INTRODUCTIONThe Analysis of Retreat l\.fining Pillar Stability (ARJ\.f PS) and the Lal\.fodel programs have been used successfully in the U.S. for designing safe pillar recovery operations for many years. INTRODUCTION Financing, or providing adequate capital at low cost for developing and bringing a natural resource property into production, is a fundamental requirement for profitable operation. Under the present economic environment the cost of financing any project is gaining more importance than ever. The fundamental keys for success in mining are "the Four M's": Mineral, Market, Management and Money. In recent years, with capital and operating costs skyrocketing, increased emphasis on obtaining adequate and low cost capital funds for bringing in a prospect is essential. For a small mining company there are limited sources for raising funds. In most cases these companies have neither a substantial asset base, nor any cash flow, and they are deemed as risky investments. The issue of shares of capital stock of such a company is probably the most common method of raising funds via the public purse. Alternatively, debt could be used and a source of such capital might be private investors or financial institutions. The company which intends to raise funds from the investing public by way of the sale of equity, subsequently lists those shares for trading on a stock exchange. Going and staying public commits a company to a multitude of complex laws, rules and reporting requirements. The governing bodies are the watch dogs for the public. The largest of such an organization of this kind in the world is the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the United States. In Canada, the Securities Laws come from within provincial jurisdiction. Most provinces have their own Securities Act, and Securities Commission. It is the Commission which administers the Act, and hence controls the distribution and trading of securities within the province. Extra provincial registration is required for trading and distribution in more than one province. In British Columbia, prior to a public offering, the approval of the Superintendent of Brokers (SOB) and of the VSE must be obtained. THE VANCOUVER AND TORONTO STOCK EXCHANGES There are five stock exchanges in Canada which supply a trading forum in which mining companies may operate. The stock exchanges are located in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Vancouver. Of the five stock exchanges, the Vancouver Stock Exchange (VSE) and the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE) are the most heavily used for resource-based issues and are the focus of this paper. The objective of this section is to provide a brief background on the VSE and TSE. The Vancouver Stock Exchange The VSE is Canada's predominant stock exchange for financing resource-based, junior issues. Since 1907, the VSE has acted as a source of funds for mining, exploration and energy companies throughout Canada and the world. Currently, there are over 1400 companies listed on the VSE. During 1983, over 3.1 billion shares traded at a value exceeding CDN$3.96 million. The VSE has developed a reputation as one of the few exchanges where a speculative resource venture may obtain a listing and subsequent financing in a relatively short time, generally five to ten months. The SOB, the Investment Dealer's Association of Canada (IDA), and the VSE all regulate trading at the Exchange. Any irregularities in a company's stock dealings are investigated and trading may be halted by the VSE until a satisfactory explanation has been received from the suspended company. Companies can be suspended from trading or delisted for various reasons. One reason is misrepresentation of facts in documentation submitted to the SOB, VSE, or to the public, through news releases.

Premier Diamond Mine is planning a new, mechanised, block cave, with a production level approximately 1000 m below surface. A high degree of tunnel damage is expected, due to stress and the relatively low in situ strength of kimberlite. An evaluation of the timing of tunnel excavation, tunnel size and spacing has been carried out to define critical parameters for planning layouts and development schedules. Extensive use has been made of three-dimensional FLAC3D numerical models, calibrated against known rock mass behaviour at 650 m depth, to examine the influence of undercut advance on production level excavations. These were able to represent the effect of stress rotation on tunnels during undercut advance and the effect of an inclined undercut. The analysis has provided guidelines that are possibly applicable to any deep block cave layout. The choice of drawpoint layout is of considerably less significance than the proportion of ground extracted on the production level elevation prior to advancing the undercut. The analysis shows that damage to production development will be potentially severe if it is all excavated prior to advancing the undercut, or is mined directly beneath the undercut face. The development of the main production tunnels alone ahead of the undercut may be feasible, but no breakaways should be put in as they appear to trigger a rapid increase in the severity of damage. The optimal sequence is when all production tunnels are developed at least 10 m in plan behind the undercut, where the induced peak field stress is less than 20 MPa and a maximum support pressure of 100 to 500 kN/m2 is require to contain movement. The assessment showed that the conditions are not significantly improved by increasing drawpoint spacing from 15 m to 18 m. The vertical spacing between the undercut and production level beneath is investigated. Provided production level development is carried out beneath the undercut, there would appear to be little benefit in increasing the vertical spacing between the undercut and production level beyond the current 15 m to 18 m.

The Bureau of Mines in its safety work has for a number of years advocated and recommended the use of permissible portable electric cap lamps for use in all mines. In the course of time required for the evolution from an unsatisfactory to an efficient and safe light, but encouraging increase in their use has been experienced in Alabama. As early as 1916, small installations of these safer lamps were made or an experimental basis by several operating companies, and the first complete mine installation eras made at the Virginia mine of the Gulf States Steel Co., July 1, 1918. From the experiments in 1316 and the complete equipment of the first mine in 1918 gradual progress has been made until there are now 30 installations with 10 operating companies; as a result 20 mines have been put entirely and 5 partly on, closed lights, and 3 companies equip their engineering departments; two installations of closed lights are maintained by other companies for emergency use. One of the mines partly on the electric cap lamp is an ore mine - the only one in Alabama (and one of the very few in the United States) that uses closed lights. Kidd Creek mine in north western Ontario is developing phase 1 of the deep mine project for mining between 2100 m and 3100 m below surface. Heat problems were experienced during the 2003 summer in working places about 2300 m below surface. At the time the mine had a æcold stopeÆ for cooling the air supplied to the mine below 1500 m from surface. The æcold stopeÆ is where during winter, ice is created in both the open pit and its connecting airways to the mine and used to cool air in summer. The operation and limitations of the existing cold stope were evaluated and led to the requirement for additional mechanical cooling to be available for the summer of 2004. The first stage of a surface refrigeration plant providing 7.5 MWR of cooling was approved, the compressor set was ordered in early January 2004 and the plant commissioned six months later in early July 2004. Based on the current modifications to the mining plan, further plant expansions are required in 2006 and 2009 leading to a total of 19 MWR of mechanical refrigeration and 8.5 MWR equivalent from the extended cold stope. The refrigeration system is described with emphasis on the specific adaptations necessary to suit Canadian conditions. Additional investigations were; using the refrigeration compressors in winter for heating and, extending the performance of either cold stopes or alternative ice storage systems. The winter use of refrigeration involve removing heat from the mine exhaust air to provide a cooling load and to use the hot water in the condensing circuit to heat the intake air and reduce reliance on mine air heating with natural gas. This paper follows on from an earlier one presented at the Seventh International Mine Ventilation Congress where the background and planning of the mine ventilation and cooling requirements were described for extending the mine at depth to 3100 m.
