Thickening is an essential process in the mining industry and currently one of the most costeffective technologies for recovering water from tailings streams. Improved performance of thickeners can lead to significant energy savings, and increased recovery of water close to the mill. Its performance is directly affected by the rheological properties of slurry at the raking zone. To further understand the dynamics of slurry inside thickeners, a multiphase particle-in-cell method (MP-PIC), is used to investigate its behaviour on a sliding channel. Parameters like particle-size distribution (PSD), rheological properties, and domain discretisation were benchmarked to study its influence on highly dense flows. The slurry concentration by weight of the samples ranged between 60 to 70% of solids by mass, under which conditions it is known to behave like a non-newtonian fluid. An experimental flume, 0.2 m wide and 2 m long, was used for validation under different angles and slurry composition. Visual analysis of the slurry height and shape, as well as velocity measurements, were compared with numerical data. The preliminary results show the ability of MP-PIC method to represent different types of highly dense flows, while still being computationally affordable and practical for industrial use. At the pelletizing plant of the Gol-E-Gohar mining and industrial company two parallel dry closed grinding circuits, each with the average throughput of 300 t/h, are used. Each grinding circuit consists of a burner, a dry ball mill (6.2 m×13 m) and an air separator. The ball mill consists of a 2 m-long drying and an 11 m-long grinding chambers. The iron ore concentrate is fed to the drying chamber by a feed chute. The first 1.35 m of the drying chamber consists of 56 flights in two rows to decrease the feed moisture from 5% to below 0.2% and the rest of dryer chamber consists of deflectors to pass the material to the grinding chamber. It was found that when the feed moisture content increased from 1.3% to 3.5%, the throughput decreased by 12% (35 t/h) indicating a low performance of the dryer. Monitoring the wear rate of flights for a period of 12 months showed that the first 0.8 m length of the flights length did not experience any wear. This means that about 59% of flights do not contribute in material distribution and drying. A DEM simulation of feed chute and the drying chamber demonstrated that due to the inappropriate design of feed chute most of materials do not get in touch with the first 0.8 m length of the drying chamber. To overcome this problem, various feed chute designs with different geometries were simulated by the KMPCDEM© software. With the aim of arriving at a proper material trajectory, where the total length of the flights are used, a new feed chute was selected. The simulation results indicated that if the height of the flights is increased from 1.60 to 2.26 m and the slope is increased from 45 to 48 degrees the material arrive at the first 0.48 m of drying chamber. In this manner, the unused part of the drying chamber decreases from 59% to 36% of the length. After installation of the new feed chute, during a period of three months the throughput increased by 36 t/h.

ONE of the well-known and important uses of the noble or precious metals has been for electrical contacts. In fact, the elements of this group, comprising gold, silver and the six platinum metals, have been called "noble" because of their ability to resist heat and corrosion, properties which were early found to be of importance in good contacts. Of these, platinum and its iridium alloys, palladium, and silver, have been extensively used. In recent years the electrical industry has been responsible for about one-eighth of the total consumption of the platinum metals in the United States. Information is not available as to what part of this one-eighth has been used for contacts but it is certainly an important one. SUBSTITUTES FOR PLATINUM During the past 20 years a considerable number of contact alloys have been proposed in the patent literature largely with the aim of more or less replacing platinum by gold or silver, and some of these alloys are finding increasingly widespread application as the reliability of their performance becomes established. From even the partial data-at hand it appears that this substitution by the less precious metals has replaced at least one-half of the amount of platinum that the entire electrical industry would otherwise be consuming at the present time. While the subject is of considerable interest to the metallurgist it is , even more so to the electrical engineer and it is surprising that the literature records no systematic and comprehensive investigation along these lines. Practically all the scattered work on noble metal contacts has centered around platinum as a Standard and has had two more or less distinct aims. One of these has been the replacement of platinum by cheaper materials, and the other, the development of materials of superior electrical performance. The merit of a contact metal has been assumed to be dependent on its infusibility, and since the more precious metals have the higher melting points there has naturally been an association of the two qualities in the sense that the more precious were

L. S. Darken—Laboratory investigation of deoxidizing and other steelmaking reactions is usually centered, at least first, on the determination of the equilibrium or equilibria involved. This seems a reasonable procedure since equilibrium, if attained, depends only on composition, temperature, and pressure; hence conclusions derived from data on small experimental quantities are applicable to a heat of steel providing eauilibrium is attained in both cases. A knowledge of equilibrium serves as a useful framework even though we may know that practical conditions do not correspond to complete equilibrium. On the other hand, nonequilibrium or rate phenomena depend on a wider variety of conditions and are more difficult to interpret; conclusions applicable to laboratory conditions may or may not apply to larger scale phenomena. Hence the attainment or nonattainment of true equilibrium in the experiments here reported is of critical importance in evaluating their significance. Since some of the statements in this paper and in the closely related preceding one (on aluminum deoxidation) imply some doubt on this matter, I should first like to ask the authors whether their conditions are intended and believed to represent equilibrium. I should like to point out three considerations which seem to cast considerable doubt on the achievement of equilibrium, at least of the particular equilibrium under consideration. 1. In the experiments on manganese deoxidation the authors point out that they could not maintain the manganese-oxide slag on top of the metal in their rotating crucible, and hence they substantially dispensed with this slag. This leads to serious trouble in the interpretation of the results, for any equilibrium is, of course, a particular specific equilibrium—in this case Mn + O = MnO The experimental deletion of the upper layer of manganese oxide means that if equilibrium is attained at all it is attained between the metal and the MnO which has soaked into or adhered to the crucible (under the metal) and has dissolved substantial amounts of the crucible material including impurities. These impurities may constitute a significant portion of the slag by virtue of the small total amount of slag, even though the crucible is relatively pure. Hence there would seem to be a strong presumption that the equilibrium (if attained) involves not a pure MnO (or MnO — FeO) slag but one saturated with alumina and containing perhaps considerable impurities which substantially lower the concentration and activity of MnO, causing the above reaction to proceed to the right further than it would in the absence of alumina and impurities. Hence it is not surprising that manganese here appears as a better deoxidizer than found by other investigators. The present results may represent equilibrium with a slag of unknown composition which seems unlikely to be particularly related to plant experience. 2. The curves representing the observed silicon deoxidation (figs. 3, 4, and 5) are all drawn with a discontinuity in slope at about 0.02 pct oxygen. This point is interpreted as corresponding to the three-phase equilibrium, metal, slag, solid silica. The type of construction shown in these figures (though apparently fitting the data) is contrary to a fundamental principle of heterogeneous equilibrium as pertains to the construction of phase diagrams. According to this principle, the two solubility curves (each of the two portions of the curves in figs. 3, 4, and 5) must intersect in such manner that their (metastable) extensions must lie outside the homogeneous field rather than inside as in these figures. In other words, the "point" in these curves should be aimed in the opposite direction, if it is to be interpreted as corresponding to the three-phase equilibrium. The construction adopted is in violation of the second law of thermodynamics. This matter is discussed in detail in several texts and also by Lipson and Wilson.&apos;" The same criticism applies to the later figures representing conditions for manganese additions. The occurrence of this discontinuity or break at 0.02 pct oxygen casts further doubt on its interpretation. The earlier investigation of this system by Korber and Oelsen is in substantial agreement with the several recent findings of Chipman and coworkers that the oxygen content of iron in equilibrium with silica and silica-saturated iron oxide slag is about one third to one half that (0.24 pct at 1600") of iron saturated with pure iron oxide; thus there seems reliable evidence that iron saturated with silica and iron silicate slag at 1600" contains about 0.1 pct oxygen, or certainly much more than the 0.02 pct proposed in this paper. 3. In the quarternary system iron-silicon-manganese-oxygen one of the equilibria involved may be written 2 Mn + SiO2 (solid) = 2 MnO <slag> + Si The activity of SiO, is constant (if equilibrium is attained) by virtue of its presence as a substantially pure solid. At not too low metallic manganese content, the activity of MnO in the slag is constant by virtue of the fact that the slag is substantially pure manganese silicate saturated with silica and hence of constant composition. Thus the equilibrium constant for the above reaction is asi/a2Mn. Barring unanticipated large changes in the activity coefficients, the equilibrium constant may be adequately approximated for the composition range covered as [% Si]/[% Mn]2. Thus a plot of log [% Mn] against log [% Si] would be expected to be linear with a slope of one half as found by Kijrber and Oelsen. In the present investigation the slope (shown in fig. 15) is found to be one. It is difficult to believe that this finding represents a correct equilibrium determination, since it is at odds both with prior experimental investigation and with. theory. In view of the above points it seems that, although this paper reports many interesting findings, there is room for considerable skepticism as to the attainment of equilibrium and as to the conclusions drawn. The paper presents the results of a study which involved collection and analysis of airborne pollutant concentration data in two producing underground room and pillar metal mines which use diesel powered equipment in the area near the face. The results include the concentrations of CO2, CO, NO, NO2 and respirable particulate matter measured with the latest portable instruments, and the carbon and hydrogen contents of the particulate matter samples determined by combusting them in a Elemental Analyzer. The carbon and hydrogen contents are used to estimate the amount of diesel particulate matter in the mine ambient air. The short term grab sample concentration data, although not suitable for determining compliance with ACGIH Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), are related to the TLVs so that they may be compared conveniently. Lognormal frequency distributions and the arithmetic mean of the concentration measurement data are used to compare different mine situations. Conclusions are drawn as to which pollutants are most important to control under actual mine production conditions.

The Buick Mine is a joint venture of American Metals Climax, Inc., and Homestake Mining Company located 120 miles by road southwest of St. Louis, near the village of Boss, in the &apos;New Missouri Lead Belt&apos; (See Figure 1). Since start-up in 1969, over four million tons of lead-zinc ore have been mined and milled at Buick. Situated about 1,100 feet below the surface at an elevation 270 feet above sea level, the flat lying sinuous ore bodies are up to 250 feet wide, 85 feet high and several thousand feet long. Mineralization is galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite in dolomite, Access to the mine is through two 18&apos;Ø concrete lined vertical shafts - one for servicing and the other for hoisting ore (See Figure 2). The mine is being worked by a modified room and pillar method using both rubber tired equipment and a sub-level rail haulage. Ore is broken from first pass headings, back and bench faces and transported by load-haul-dump units to ore passes located on 900 foot centers. The ore is pulled from chutes on the sublevel 90 feet below into 15 ton bottom dump cars and delivered in 10 car lots by a 15 ton diesel locomotive to a 42" gyratory crusher (See Figure 3). A recent innovation has been the introduction of two 50 ton trucks with plans to haul up to 60% of the ore on the mining level to an ore pass feeding directly to the primary crusher (See Figure 4). Ventilation raises up to 16&apos;Ø, which were originally planned for 900 foot centers, are now driven on 450 foot centers.

This paper is a step in the direction of developing a computer model of the near source dispersal of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in planetary boundary layer (PBL). Since Surface Mine blasting is done during daytime, study of daytime dispersion in convective boundary layer (CBL) is relevant to the mining engineers. The scope of this paper covers dispersal after the blast in any type of PBL ie stable, convective and neutral but only under weak wind condition. Mathematical analysis of the dispersion of vertical dust column has been carried out during weak wind conditions in a tropical meteorological environment. It is noted that dust concentration reaches its maximum value some distance away from the point of blast, immediately after the blast (t*=1) and thereafter rapidly decreases. After a short interval from the time of blast at t*=11 the dust concentration shows linear decrease in concentration with distance. Dust concentration also rapidly drops during the interval t*=1 to t*=11, thereafter, rate of drop is nearly the same at any distance from the point of blast.

"When, in 1973, a limit was placed on the amount of dust in the coal mine atmosphere, restricting the average exposure of a coal miner to 2 milligrams of dust per cubic meter of air (mg/m'), skeptics in the United States and abroad Said the standard could never be achieved. They cited much more lenient standards already established in other countries and refused to believe that the United States could meet the world's most stringent requirements in mines where dust had never before been regulated. Yet 10 years later the goal had largely been achieved and miners were working underground in a cleaner atmosphere than ever before. It was a major achievement and a big stride in what had become a war on coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), the black lung disease prevalent among miners in underground coal mines.Although the health hazards caused by working in a dust-filled mine atmosphere have long been recognized, the problem became particularly acute in this century with the mechanization and increased productivity of underground coal mining. The United States was much slower than some other countries to address the problem of respirable diseases among miners. While dust levels in South African gold mines were first regulated in 1912, in the United States it was only when 476 workers died of silicosis while blasting a tunnel through a mountain near Gauley Bridge, West Virginia in the 1930s that widespread public attention became focused on the plight of workers in dust-filled environments. Another 30 years passed before regulation of dust finally became law in the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969.With a stringent new standard imposed in all underground coal mines, the industry was faced With the daunting problem of reducing levels of airborne dust from perhaps 6.5 mg/m' to 2 mg/m', in an inherently dusty operation carried out in the close confines of underground passageways. Most of the coal dust is made by the cutting operation in which the continuous miner or longwall machine can produce several thousand milligrams of respirable dust for each ton of coal mined. Other dusty operations such as drilling holes for roofbolts, loading and unloading coal on shuttle cars, and the operation of conveyor belts contribute to the overall problem.Since the institution of the new dust control standards, a number of strategies have been adopted for reducing the coal dust in the mine atmosphere. These strategies involve engineering and design improvements that help lo prevent the generation of particles, keep particles of dust from becoming airborne, carry dust away from the working area, and isolate the dust from the workers in the mining operation. These procedures have been pursued vigorously by the Bureau of Mines, and many successful methods have been developed to reduce the mass concentration to which the workers are subjected. The mining companies were reluctant at first to confront the problems but after a period of trials and gradual improvement, they joined with others in the fight to reduce the dust concentrations in the working place."

"Booster fans are relatively rare in Australian coal mines. However, as mines become progressivelydeeper it is likely that such fans will be increasingly adopted as a method to sustain or improve the ventilation of underground workings. The reasons why booster fans may be an att ractive alternative include: increased cost of sinking additional ventilation shafts with greater seam depths; environmental objections to shaft sinking projects; and increasing urbanisation and surface constraints limiting availability of potential ventilation shaft sites. As Tahmoor Colliery movedinto its northern lease the ventilation constraints became the limiting factor on production. Thelimitations of the old workings meant that the existing ventilation system would be inadequateto sustain the required production. Extensive ventilation modelling was carried out to evaluatevarious potential solutions and the recommended option was the installation of a booster fanor fans, to gain underground access to an already approved shaft site in the northern lease.Proposals were sought from recognised fan manufacturers and various alternative arrangements were tendered. Ultimately the choice was between one large centrifugal fan and a set (three or four) of smaller æauxiliary-likeÆ fans in parallel. The successful tender was for a single centrifugal, an arrangement very similar to the booster fans that have been operating eff ectively at Westcliff Colliery for a number of years. This paper describes the current ventilation network, evaluation of the ventilation options, the fan selection process, and the project status to date."

This paper is the second of a series recording the results of tests made at various quarries throughout the United States to determine, (1) the relation between the size gradation of feed to, and product from, primary crushers; (2) the particle shape of crushed product; (3) the differences in gradation and particle shape produced by different tries of primary crushers; and ( 4) the differences in gradation and particle shape caused by crushing different kinds of stone. Primary crushing has received comparatively little attention in the technical literature in spite of tine fact that the design of the whole crushing plant should be correlated to the performance of the primary crusher.

"Since 1984, the date of the first recorded fatality involving a remote controlled continuous mining machine, 38 miners in the United States have been killed when they were struck by a continuous mining machine. Proximity detection is a valuable tool for preventing fatalities, and the use of these systems is expected to significantly improve safety. Proximity detection provides a means to prevent accidents like these. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a series of underground tests to evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of proximity detection systems under a number of conditions such as varying the orientation and height of the personal wearable device (PWD), moving the PWD close to the trailing cable, and activating the machine’s mining mode. At the 2014 SME Annual Meeting, results from tests on first-generation proximity detection systems were presented. This paper will provide results from the similar tests performed with second-generation systems. The results show that performance has improved. For example, the negative impact of PWD orientation and the trailing cable has been reduced. However, some inconsistencies remain. Notably, performance changes dramatically when mining mode is activated. INTRODUCTION Since 1984 there have been 38 fatalities involving striking and pinning of the operator and other workers by the continuous mining machine (CMM) [1]. In August 2011, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) published a proposed regulation that would require proximity detection systems on all continuous mining machines except full-face machines [2]. Proximity detection systems are designed to stop machine motion to protect miners from striking/pinning hazards. Several MSHA-approved proximity detection systems are commercially available. MSHA estimates that of the 38 fatal striking and pinning accidents that have occurred since 1984 involving CMMs, the use of proximity detection could have been a preventative factor in at least 28 cases [1]. Furthermore, MSHA estimates that proximity detection could prevent 20% of all deaths throughout the industry [3]. NIOSH researchers have been involved in the development and testing of proximity detection technology since creating the HASARD system [4] and have recently conducted research intended to develop more advanced proximity detection technology for CMMs [5,6,7,8]. In addition, NIOSH has also conducted research investigating how the signals of a proximity detection system propagate [9,10] and have developed a novel method for determining the location of a personal wearable device (PWD) relative to the magnetic field generators [11,12]."

"Safe and efficient mining of extremely inclined thick coal seams less than 20m thick is one of the new challenges in China coal industry. In recent years, the extremely inclined thick coal seams have been encountered in some old mines and western China, and currently the top coal caving longwall mining method has been successfully applied to this kind of coal seams. Accordingly, this paper studies the roof movement and its impact on shield supports of top-coal caving longwall mining in extremely inclined thick coal seams. The structure of main roof before failure was simulated by the fix-ended beam, and provided the solutions for determination of maximum compressive stress of the bottom beam end and maximum tensile stress of the top beam end. The failure mode on the upper end of working face is mainly a combination of compression and shearing, while that for the bottom end is tension and shearing. Roof fracture begins at the upper end of working and propagates downward. The shape of collapsed roof strata can be described as parabolic and divided into three segments from top to bottom, including no filling, uneven filling and densely filling segments. The roof loading conditions of no filling segment is more likely to have dynamic burst impacts.INTRODUCTIONExtremely inclined thick coal seam refers to that the dip angle of coal seam is greater than 45° and the thickness is greater than 3.5m (Wang and Zhang, 2015a; Wang and Zhang, 2015b; Wang, 2005; Xie, Gao, and Shangguan, 2005; Wu, et al., 2014; Deng and Wang, 2014; He, et al., 2015). This type of coal seams can be divided into three categories: 1. The extremely inclined thick coal seam, of which the thickness is less than 5m and the dip angle is less than 60°, is usually mined by fully-mechanized longwall mining method. 2. The extremely inclined thick coal seam, of which the thickness is 5 m-20m, is usually mined by top coal caving longwall method. And 3. When the thickness of extremely inclined thick coal seam is greater than 20m, it is mined by the horizontal section top coal caving longwall method. For example, the average angle ofWudong coal mine in Xinjiang province is 45°, and the thickness is 27m. Wudong coal mine is applying the horizontal section top coal caving longwall mining, producing 3 million tons annually per working face (Figure 1)."

An evaluation is presented for a process designed , on the basis of published work , to extract alumina as potassium alum from clay using sulfuric acid and potassium sulfate . The silica residue is separated by filtration . Ferric iron is reduced to ferrous iron , and the alum is crystallized from the solution , leaving the ferrous iron in solution . The alum crystals are separated from the solution and redissolved for feed to autoclave decomposition . In an autoclave the alum is partly decomposed to a basic alum , recovering five - ninths of the sulfuric acid and two - thirds of the potassium sulfate without using an acid plant . The basic alum is decomposed by calcining , and the potassium sulfate is then removed by washing with water . Operating costs for a plant producing 1,000 tons of alumina a day are estimated at $ 96.15 per ton of alumina . The fixed capital cost is estimated at $ 155 million . This process is not competitive under current economic conditions with the production of alumina from bauxite by the Bayer process . Improvement in leaching , basic alum decomposition , and washing could reduce the costs and improve the product which contains some potassium .

"Indian coal industry is the world's third largest in terms of production and fourth largest in terms of proven coal resources. Indian coal deposits are generally of high ash content varying from 24 to 50%. The coking coal reserves of India constitute about 12% of the total coal inventory, and the coals are washed in washeries, before being used for metallurgical purposes. The processes used for washing coking coal is Jigs, Heavy medium bath and Cyclones for the sizes upto 0.5mm, while the coal fines are washed in spirals and conventional flotation cells. Extensive studies were carried out for understanding the performance of an operating conventional flotation plant. The performance studies revealed that appreciable quantity of clean coal is being lost in the tailings due to varied reasons and the required quantity and quality was not achieved. In this study, laboratory Flotation experiments were carried out to examine the cleaning characteristics of the said tailing and to determine the effective process parameters for recovery of clean coal at desired ash level ( 16-17%). Response Surface Methodology was applied to investigate the operating conditions of the Froth Flotation for modeling and optimization. Primary study reflects that there is a possibility to recover clean coal at 16-17% ash level with a yield of about 60-70% from that Flotation tailing of feed ash about 28%.INTRODUCTIONMost of the Indian coking coals are difficult in cleaning characteristics and high ash content due to its drift origin and its age of formation for more than 225 million years. Indian coking coal reserve is limited about 12% of total coal reserve. The minerals are homogeneously mixed with the coal macerals. The open cast mining practice and mechanized mining methods are being adopted to meet the increasing demands of coals resulting in generation of more coal fines and subsequently the quality is deteriorated. Indian good quality coking coal reserves of higher seams are fast depleting and hence coking coals of difficult cleaning characteristics of lower seams (LVC) are being now explored. Due to increased mechanization of coal mines to cope up the increased demand and followed by size reduction of lower seam coals in search of better liberation , the coal fines are increasing by leaps and bounds. The processes used for washing coking coal is Jigs, Heavy medium bath and Cyclones for the sizes upto 0.5mm, while the coal fines are washed in spirals and conventional flotation cells."

This Limestone site required the removal of a bench containing high quality rock located in close proximity to sump and pit pump. The sump and associated electrical box were below the bench that needed to be blasted and located only 70 feet (21.33 meters) away. It was proposed to blast material needed without moving or disturbing the pump or electrical junction box. The area to be blasted was flown with a drone and stitched into a 3D orthographic model. Proprietary blast design software was used to create a blast design solution that would allow for a series of blasts that would provide required fragmentation and muckpile development and not disturb the sump or electrical box. A drill patten was created for each blast using the burden heat map and 3D face profiles created from the 3D orthographic model. Timing contour lines and muckpile displacement predictions were used to create timing sequences for proper face movement away from the sump and electrical box. The shot designs were laid out with a GPS system to insure hole location accuracy. All holes were remeasured for proper face burdens using the 3D model and Boretrak®® data collected after drilling operations were completed to insure hole locations were within face burden tolerances as derived by the burden heat map. After each drill log was reviewed, a charge loading scenario was created for each hole. The timing design created, for each shot and was reviewed and adjusted as needed with regard to desired muckpile displacement away from the sump and electrical box. Blasting results were satisfactory, with fragmentation and muckpile development consistent with the calculated throw from the blast model, with no rock hitting the pump or box and no rocks striking the sump water and disturbing the pump motor.

The Falconbridge Matte Leach Process yields high-purity nickel chloride by selectively dissolving nickel from copper-nickel converter matte with hydrochloric acid , purifying the solution by solvent extraction and crystallizing NiCl2 4H2O by further acidifying the purified leach liquor. In the Kristiansand Matte Leach Plant, a granular oxide is produced by high-temperature hydrolysis of the nickel chloride for subsequent reduction to a high-purity granular metal product, designated NICKEL 98. This paper describes the investigation of on alternate route to processing nickel chloride in which high-quality cathode nickel is produced by electrowinning from all- chloride electrolyte. The investigation was made in a pilot circuit containing two production-size electrowinning tanks operated in conjunction with the commercial-scale leach plant.

The Bureau of Mines conducted mineral investigations of the Peace Rock and Deadwood River roadless areas in Idaho, in 1992. Literature research was done by the Idaho Geological Survey. The study areas contain black sand placers (thorium, columbium, tantalum, titanium, uranium, and rare earth elements), gold, and molybdenum prospects. Except for unrecorded placer gold, there has been no mineral production from the areas. No mineral resources were delineated, but a multi-million tonne molybdenum resource is in the Big Pine Creek area and a 142 million m&apos; black sand deposit is in the Stolle Meadows, Peace Valley, and Deadwood River areas. The Deadwood mine produced zinc, lead, and silver. There are six mining districts in and adjoining the areas; Warm Lake, Deadwood, Garden Valley/Lowman, Banner, Summit Flat, and Grimes Pass. Few claims, mostly placer, were active in the study area in 1992. The study areas are underlain by granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith. Most of the deposits are alluvial accumulations of heavy minerals weathered out of the Idaho batholith. Stockwork and narrow veins along shears account for the base and precious metal concentrations. Eleven prospects were examined. Workings consist of drill holes, pits and adits. Geothermal resources (hot springs) occur mainly along the Middle Fork Payette River; Vulcan Hot Springs is a designated Known Geothermal Resource Area. Sand and gravel resources are of local interest.

"In the early 1920’s, the City of Tulsa, Oklahoma constructed an approximately 8,238-foot long tunnel, the Tiawah Tunnel, through bedrock. Voids behind the concrete tunnel liner were detected via probe drilling in early 2000 as part of an interior visual condition assessment. In 2012 and 2015, conditions along the entire tunnel were efficiently assessed through geophysical investigation using ground penetrating radar (GPR) along the inner tunnel crown and at various select locations within the tunnel. Fifty-seven (57) potential voids, extending up to 19 inches in depth and 12 feet in width, were detected with 1,000 MHz GPR and confirmed through probe drilling with approximately 80% accuracy. GPR proved to be an efficient and reliable technology for void detection behind concrete tunnel lining. This paper highlights the geophysical investigation and how geophysical efforts were combined with other investigation efforts to definitively determine the presence of voids outside of the tunnel lining.INTRODUCTION The city of Tulsa, Oklahoma has a population of about 400,000 people. The original source of water for the city was the Arkansas River. The first pumping operation provided untreated water to homes and businesses in 1904. The residents of Tulsa found this water to be unacceptable due to the high levels of salt and gypsum present. As the city grew, land and storage/treatment facilities were acquired in order to obtain and distribute a more suitable raw water. The raw water needs for the city are currently satisfied by transport and treatment of about 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water from surface water sources. Water is transported many miles from Spavinaw/Eucha and Oologah lakes to Yahola Lake and the Lynn Lane Reservoir (totaling over 3-billion gallon capacity). From here, the raw water is treated and transported to the various customers (City of Tulsa 2015). The Tulsa Metropolitan Utility Authority (TMUA) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the raw water transport system."

Dundee Precious Metals Inc. (DPM) owns and operates the Ada Tepe gold mine and processing facility (previously referred to as the Krumovgrad Gold Project) located in south-western Bulgaria. The Ada Tepe mine became the first green filed project in past 40 year in Balkans and one of the few in Europe when it was commissioned during the first half of 2019. The plant produces a high-grade gold silicate concentrate generated through its comminution circuit and staged floatation reactors (SFR’s) while depositing its tailings in a state-of-the-art Integrated Mine Waste Facility (IMWF). This paper presents the successful commissioning, ramp-up and optimization of the Ada Tepe processing plant and how the various challenges, including that of an inexperienced front-line workforce, were overcome. More specifically addressing how the implemented modern processing technologies and the operational readiness program, supported the people and process to achieve the design parameters safely and consistently.
