What would appear to be a very simple process on paper has proved to be overrun with a multitude of unseen difficulties. For more than 70 years attempts have been made to cast metals in a continuous manner, but it has been only within the last Io years that some degree of success has been achieved.1 Historical Development Bessemer's Experiments—Method I Bessemer was the first to try to cast molten metal in a continuous manner. His method is fully described in U. S. Patent No. 49053, issued in 1865. The patent drawing is shown in Fig. I. In this method the molten metal was poured between a pair of rolls of large diameter, which were cooled by water sprays. Means were provided to prevent moisture from coming into direct coptact with the molten metal. The width of the strip was controlled by the flanges. On paper this should work to perfection, but it is beset with many difficulties still awaiting solution. Bessemer failed to reduce his invention to commercial practice. About 1890 Bessemer's method was revived by Norton and associates (U. S. Patent No. 441375). They formed the Fluid Metal Rolling Co. at Maywood, Ill., and spent $250,000 in endeavoring to develop the technique for this simple method. Finally they had to abandon it. Naturally, they did carry the technical development far beyond anything Bessemer had done, but even so it was far from being a useful commercial success. In recent years it has undergone further development by C. W. Hazelett (U. S. Patent No. 2058447), who has succeeded in obtaining long lengths of copper, brass, aluminum, and even stainless steel. He introduced many' ingenious devices but the greatest obstacle still remained—the disintegration of the roll surface when the surface is heated and chilled in rapid succession. Difficulty is also experienced in maintaining a uniform supply of molten metal to the rolls. The patents pertaining to this method would indicate these to be the major obstacles. Experimental work by Mellen—Method 2 A departure from the method introduced by Bessemer, was tried by Grenville Mellen, of East Orange, K. J., sometime between 1914 and 1920, who obtained a number of patents.2 His method is illustrated in Fig. 2. This method failed to make an impression upon the art; however, it is of value in pointing out the difficulties the inventor ran into and the way in which he tried to meet them. The split mold sections form two endless chains. When going through the center of the apparatus, these sections engage each other to form a complete mold. As the engaged mold section moves downward at a constant speed, molten metal is teemed into it. The recovery of elemental sulfur from sulfur dioxide has important implications for coal- burning power plants and nonferrous metal smelters. The thermodynamic analyses showed calcium sulfide to be suitable for recovering elemental sulfur from sulfur dioxide. At the temperatures of 1023 to 1153 K under the sulfur dioxide partial pressures of 5.0 - 60.1 kPa, elemental sulfur from sulfur dioxide was recovered by its reaction with calcium sulfide. The kinetics of this reaction were measured at the same conditions using a thermogravimetric analysis technique. This reaction scheme would be attractive if the coproduct calcium sulfate can be reduced to regenerate calcium sulfide. This is the topic of another paper. At 1073 K under the sulfur dioxide partial pressure of 25.8 kPa, 48 % of the original calcium sulfide was converted to calcium sulfate in an hour. Under the same conditions, 55 % of the regenerated calcium sulfide were converted to calcium sulfate in an hour even after third regeneration.

The formation of scale is common in gold ore processing plants. A working definition of scale, applicable to the various scaling conditions found in gold ore processing plants, would be: "a hard, tightly adhering deposit formed in place by the precipitation of calcium-bearing mineral compounds from water". The most common scale found in gold processing plants is calcium carbonate (CaCO3) although calcium sulfate (CaSO4) is occasionally a problem.

"Naturally occurring geomaterials such as sandstone, limestone and other soft rocks, residual soils are composed of a particulates held together through a cohesive matrix, usually composed of argillaceous or siliceous cementing agents. Geo-materials such as these have been reconstituted in the laboratory using ordinary Portland cement in lieu of the naturally occurring cohesive matrix, in addition to using sand particulates. This cohesive frictional granular ensemble is an ideal model material for understanding the mechanical behaviour of transitional geomaterials such as soft rocks. An important consequence of this cohesion that pervades the inter particulate system is the enhanced tensile strength when compared to a purely granular ensemble. The assessment of strength of these soft rocks and cemented sands is often understood in the framework of continuum mechanics, i.e. considering the cemented sand to be a continuum, and performing simple elemental tests such as uniaxial compression or tension tests. A simple model to describe the behaviour of these cemented sands has been to use elements such as springs, sliders, and dashpots in parallel to describe the existence of a cohesive and frictional component of strength (Jiang et al. 2007). In the framework of continuum mechanics, the mechanical response of these cemented sands have been modeled using traditional plasticity theory, for example utilizing variants of the traditional Mohr Coulomb model, Modified cam clay (Sun and Matsuoka 1999) etc. The typical sand models are amended to include the effects of cohesion, as proposed by Lagoia and Nova (1995).The mechanical response of cemented sands is understood to be transitional to the behaviour of a typical particulate assemblage and a quasi-brittle material. However, the effect of length scale in these material systems has not been investigated. This paper presents a series of uniaxial compression experiments conducted on weakly cemented sand specimens of various sizes. The effect of length scale in these weakly cemented sands is investigated through unconfined compression tests."

The Atacama Kozan underground mine, located in Tierra Amarilla, Atacama, Chile, was facing over-excavation and slow progress in drift construction, issues associated with the use of traditional explosive, ANFO. The presence of water in the blast holes required as well the use of cartridged emulsions, which extended loading times and increased operators’ effort. With loading times ranging around 76 minutes and lower advanced rate, Enaex Underground proposed the use of a pumpable emulsion-type explosive to optimize blasting, enhance safety, and streamline the operational process. This explosive is loading into the blasting holes using an UBT equipment (Unidad Bombeable para Túneles in spanish). This equipment allows mechanized loading, adaptation to small and medium diameter boreholes, ensuring compatibility with varying drilling profiles, integration with Atacama Kozan’s operational equipment and improvement in environmental and occupational conditions, with a measurable reduction in contaminant emissions and worker exposure risks. The implementation of this emulsion-based explosive allows an increase in productivity in drift development. A notable effective advance rate of 95% to 96% was achieved, alongside a reduction in overbreak in 7%, and a decrease in loading time to 40 minutes. Additionally, there was a 40% occurrence of drilling half cast, contributing to contour drift quality. The operation also benefited from a cleaner and safer working environment, enhancing operator ergonomics and reducing the need for jetanol and compressed air.

"Breakouts are one of the biggest problems encountered during continuous casting of steel billets. Billets get cracked locally or break completely in two parts during solidification causing the liquid part of the partially solidified billet to empty inside the cooling chamber. Proper control of important parameters is necessary to avoid break outs during continuous casting. In the present work, the nature of the break outs at a billet caster at Tata Steel was studied. Data analysis was also done for certain casting parameters and the Sulphur tracer test was conducted to understand solidification in the mould. It was found that to reduce the occurrence of break outs, it was necessary to tune the operations based on the grade being cast and the design of the mould tube being used.IntroductionA break out during the continuous casting process is a rupture of the partially solidified shell inside the secondary cooling chamber, causing the contained liquid steel to spill out. In the mid 1970s while continuous casting technology was still in early stage of development, causes of breakouts was not well understood. Today, with technological development much has been understood about breakouts but, most of the understanding has been in the slab casting process wherein due to the higher level of instrumentation, a lot of information has been gained. In billet casting however, due to the geometry of the mould housing with the tube mould, multiplied by the complexity of the multiple strands, instrumentation has not been used and obtaining data for analysis has been difficult.Breakouts at billet casters are still the main hindrances to production. A break out results in a loss in production since the strand which has had a break out is now not available to produce and thus a six strand caster would be reduced to a five strand caster, increasing the time for casting the same tonnage. Additionally extra set up time is required as more often than not a mould change is required in order to have the strand casting again."

This paper describes development of a cost report that is descriptive, logically oriented, and concise. Since the costs involved relate to mining, this reporting technique could help bridge any possible communications gap between "mining men" and computer personnel, at the same time giving the computer-oriented mining individual information to assist him in his job performance. As computers become entrenched in the mining world, meaningful report assimilation becomes a major task. No one should be more capable of defining required results than the man requesting a report. If he is able to clearly state his needs and has researched his problem, it will be reflected in the computer output. During 1970, The Anaconda Company's Berkeley Pit Operation, at Butte, Montana, received many different computer-generated equipment cost reports. Up to thirty-six different components for each type (class) of pit equipment contributed cost data to the Berkeley Pit cost system files for both operating and repairs during current month, year-to-date and accumulation-to-date time periods. This reporting approach was taken to facilitate analyzing this voluminous data. SUMMARY A Major Component Cost Analysis (Exhibits 6-A thru 6-C) developed by arranging the top ten operating and repair percentages (component cost divided by total cost) in descending order, and then accumulating these percentages to a possible one-hundred percent. In the present work a two dimensional computational model is derived for the description of the time dependent heap leaching process. The flow inside the heap is calculated using the diffusion equations for the flow in porous media. The soil conductivity is also estimated assuming a close packed structure for the grain packing inside the heap. These equations, with appropriate boundary conditions, are solved using a time step splitting scheme. From this calculation the amount of leaching reagent in contact with the ore at any position inside the heap can be calculated and, once coupled with appropriate reaction equations, the amount of metals extracted can be computed and leaching agent concentration updated. The model is tested with available experimental data and the results have shown to be in a very good agreement. The model predicts all the transient features of the data.

In underground mining operations, ventilation and water sprays are the common methods of controlling dust. In recent years there has been a proliferation of technical literature dealing with water sprays for dust control. However, guidelines for the design of an effective water spray system have not been presented to the mining industry. This paper reviews developments in water spray dust control technology and recommends guidelines for water spray systems to control dust in under- ground coal and non-coal mining operations. These guidelines suggest type, number, location and orientation of nozzles, desirable operating water pressure, and associated filtration system.

The Bureau of Mines combined preconcentrating techniques and mass spectrometry to develop a parts-per-billion general analysis of impurities in helium. The impurities are preconcentrated using a Bureau trace-impurity analyzer; 35-mm Hg pressure of helium is left in the concentration trap to sweep the impurities into the mass spectrometry and provide a 10-mm Hg sample pressure.

IT is well known that most of the materials entering into the manufacture of thermocouples are subject to variations in their thermoelectric characteristics, the chief causes of which are: differences in chemical composition; the previous .history, which includes mechanical working, ageing, oxidation, and contamination; and mode of use, such as depth of immersion, etc. In the case of a very extensively use thermoelement, the iron-constantan couple, neither iron nor constantan are absolutely uniform, and a number of checks are made during the process of manufacture. As both are subject to diversion from a standard value, neither, can be used for checking the other. It is, therefore, necessary to find a third metal against, which iron and constantan maybe checked. It was to find such a metal; that the present investigation was undertaken. To be a reliable, checking standard, the metal must possess a fairly high melting point? it must be obtainable in sufficient purity, and it must be uniform and constant with respect to its thermoelectric qualities. The choice is, as a result, limited to a few metals, such as copper, gold, and silver. Copper has the advantage of low cost, which makes it possible to use each wire only once and thus avoid any variations due to continued use, although previous investigators have found1 that continued use does not affect the calibration of a copper-constantan thermocouple. Copper also has the advantage of a large thermal electromotive force against constantan and would be desirable as a checking standard if it could be shown that it possessed the proper thermoelectric characteristics. The investigation, accordingly, resolved itself into three phases: the uniformity of commercial electrolytic copper, the effect of aging and method of annealing, and the calibration of the copper-constantan thermocouple.

"SUMMARYThis report on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines presents compilations of inspection test data furnished on their products by manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline, and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on samples of these gasolines. Data and physical samples for the survey were submitted by 15 manufacturers on 18 grade 80, 21 grade 91/98, 22 grade 100/130, end 10 grade 115/145 aviation fuels.The inspection test data supplied by the participating manufacturers consist of octane and performance numbers, tetraethyllead content, dye color, and other characteristics usually listed in aviation gasoline specifications, such as AN-F-48a or ASTM Designation D910-47T. These data are tabulated and averaged by grades in tables 1 through 4 and, as reported, meet the AN-F-48a and similar specifications with a few exceptions. Two grade 80 gasolines show a lean-mixture octane rating slightly below 80.0, and 91/98 grade fuel shows a lean-mixture rating of 90.9 and a rich-mixture rating of 97.5, two 100/130 grade gasolines have a rich-mixture performance number slightly below 130.0, and one 115/145 grade gasoline shows a rich-mixture performance number of 144.5. However, octane and performance number averages are above the mini¬mum requirements for each grade. Tetraethyllead content in the 91/98 and 100/ 130 grades generally is above the maximum outlined in these specifications, whereas dye color for each of the four grades, with the exception of two gasolines in grades 80 and 100/130, is that designated for the particular grade. Distillation requirements, with a few exceptions at individual points, are met by gasolines of all grades. Reid-vapor-pressure, copper-dish-residue, heat-of-combustion or aniline-gravity-constant, freezing-point, and copper-strip-corrosion requirements are met by all gasolines so far as reported. No data for some of these tests wore submitted on a few of the gasolines. One gasoline, grade 115/145, shows a sulfur content greater than the specified maximum."

From time to time the Bureau of Mines has issued publications dealing with the various classes of explosion-proof mining machinery that have been tested and approved as permissible for use in mines having atmospheres that may become inflammable by reason of the inadvertent presence of gas or dust. These publications are confined almost entirely to description of the features contributing directly or indirectly to the prevention of explosion or shock hazards, and are intended to give inspectors, safety engineers, and others already familiar with the general safety requirements more detailed information on the safety features of the design of a particular machine. As a background for papers describing permissible machines and to avoid the necessity of duplicating descriptions of methods of conducting investigations and tests of such machinery, Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine-Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, was published in 1929. Three bulletins giving detailed descriptions of the three most numerous types of machines have been issued, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotive and power Trucks. Bulletin 343, Permissible Coal-Handling Equipment. Bulletin 382, Permissible Coal-Cutting Equipment.

TWO systems are used for heating air in blast-furnace operations: I. The double surface system, in which a cast-iron pipe is heated on the outer surface, and, at the same time, heats the blast from its inner surface. This is simple in operation and gives a continuous effect, but is limited by 1100" F. as a maximum temperature of the blast. 11. The single surface system, by which large surfaces of fire-brick are heated, and air passed over the heated surface, absorbing the heat and carrying it on to the furnace. This system is more comylex than the double surface, as it invoives the reversing of the air and gas every hour and a half. The single surface system has two advantages: 1. The blast can be heated to a temperature of 1800° F. 2. The stoves are indestructible. From recent experience it has been found that 1300" F. to 1400' F. is the best average temperature for economy of coal for safe working. This is equivalent to a saving of 11/2 to 2 cwt. of coal per ton of iron over the extreme limit of cast-iron stoves. Independently of this, it is a strong point in favor of this system that the blast can be raised to a temperature of 1800° F. within an hour when the hearth is getting cold. All furnacemen know the ralue of a hot hearth for quality and quantity of iron. Cooling of a hearth occurs from leaky tuyeres, scaffolds, or heavy burden. When there is not sufficient coal at the tuyeres to seize on the oxygen of the entering air and convert it at once to carbonic oxide, there will not be enough heat to liquefy the cinder. Black cinder and poor iron are the results. The remedy is additional heat from the blast. If the stoves will give 1800" in place of 1100°, it is obvions that the furnaces will get around sooner, and without waiting for a change of burden at the tunnel head to bring extra coal to the hearth. The heat absorption caused by a leaky tuyere will chill the hearth and drive the zone of fusion higher up in the furnace. This loss must be supplied, and the calorics lost to the hearth must be regained before good iron can be made. Take another case: A furnace carefully burdened on No. 1 iron, during a spell of damp weather, goes on to No. 2 or No. 3. Heat is lost to the furnace through absorption by the moisture, and less burden must be carried in order to get back on No. 1. When the

"In order to make the stainless steel making process efficient and environment friendly, it is essential to minimize the loss of chromium to the slag phase. With a view to investigate the advantages of using CO2 to attain moderate oxygen partial pressures in the oxidant gas during the decarburizations of stainless steel, the present experiments were carried out to understand the oxidation kinetics of Fe-Cr alloys and Fe-V alloy with gas mixtures containing CO2. In the present work, the oxidation behavior of Fe-Cr and Fe-V was examined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Various mixtures of O2 and CO2 were used as the oxidant gas and the oxidation rate was followed by the weight changes as a function of time.The experiments demonstrated that the oxidation rate is independent of temperature at present experimental situation, but has strongly related to the Cr-content of the alloy as well as the oxygen partial pressure in the oxidant gas mixture. The wetting of alumina by the iron drop and the change of the drop shape during the course of the oxidation were investigated by X-ray radiography."

"The solid-state reduction of ilmenite concentrate with graphite was studied under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1050°C and 1350°C. The rate of reduction increased with increasing temperature and decreasing particle size, with the maximum extent of reduction found to be 80% at 1350oC with a particle size in the range of -106 +90 µm. The activation energy for the reduction reaction was calculated to be 257 kJ/mole. The trivalent iron oxide was reduced first to divalent iron oxide and then to metallic iron. An annular ring of a partially reduced oxide phase containing metallic nuclei was formed around the core of ilmenite, which grew in size as the original ilmenite core shrank with progressive reduction. The reduction of titanium dioxide also took place during this stage, which produced the Magneli oxides in the form of TinO2n-1. The metallic phase had very high Fe and low Ti contents throughout the reduction, whereas the partially reduced oxide phase adjacent to the metallic phase was high in Ti and depleted in Fe. The metallic phase globules formed during this stage were small and are considered suitable only for leaching and not for other concentration processes. The core of the particle generally retained the composition of the original ilmenite. The purpose of this work was to remove iron and increase the titanium oxide content of the ilmenite to produce a high-titanium containing charge for subsequent smelting.IntroductionThe titanium-bearing minerals ilmenite (FeTiO3) and rutile (TiO2) are the primary natural raw materials used in industry to produce titanium metal and titanium-based products. The common titanium-bearing minerals are ilmenite, rutile, anatase, brookite, leucoxene, arizonite, and perovskite. Although the formula of ilmenite is commonly expressed as FeTiO3, the mineral can accommodate Mn and Mg, which are chemically bound in the form of (Fe,Mn,Mg)TiO3. Ilmenite concentrate can also contain Fe2O3 and Al2O3 in addition to the physically separable oxides such as SiO2 and CaO. The crystal structure of ilmenite is an ordered derivative of the corundum structure with a trigonal-rhombohedral symmetry. Fe2+ and Ti4+ ions occupy the octahedral sites, leaving the tetrahedral sites unoccupied. In each FeTiO3 unit, there are three O2- ions creating three octahedral sites, two of which are occupied by Fe2+ and Ti4+ (Wilson et al., 2005)."

The shock tunnel located at the Missouri University of Science and Technology Experimental Mine is 65 feet 9 inches (20.0406 m) in length. The tests performed inside of this tunnel are either arena tests or shock interaction and transfer (SIT) tests. Arena tests simulate a large open air blast, with lower explosive weights, by elongating the impulse of the blast wave. SIT tests are conducted to determine how the produced shock wave interacts and transfers its energy into a target object located at the end of the tunnel. The target used in this research is multilayered, with each layer being a different material. The targets are 2 ft. by 4 ft. (0.6096m by 1.2192m) pieces of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), DOW polystyrene foam insulation, and gypsum drywall. The order of these materials varies with each test. This shock tunnel is unique, because the geometry changes along its length. To fully understand how the shock waves are affected by these changes, a working model was needed. The second purpose of this model is to confirm the maximum charge size of 400 grams (14.11 oz.) of C4 that can be detonated inside the tunnel without causing damage to or failure of the tunnel, thus reducing the amount of time needed in downtime and repair. The model predicts pressures in various locations both within the tunnel and the attached target, thus assisting in determining where failures would likely occur. In the process of generating this model, several problems were encountered, including filling the tunnel with air, meshing the complex geometry, and creating the tunnel in a CAD system. This paper will discuss how these problems were solved. A working model was created by using ANSYS Explicit Dynamics and ANSYS Autodyn. The tunnel geometry file was created using SolidWorks and includes the complex geometry changes along with the target and its mount located at the end of the tunnel. The results produced by the model were compared to the field SIT tests. The comparison of the results from both the model and the experimental testing showed a similar trend in the pressure traces.

The need for fuels and minerals in this country is estimated to double, triple, or even quadruple by the end of the present century. Even assuming more recycling of scrap metals and some priority allocation of energy, as has been done, for instance in war time, the projected increase in the nation's population and ever-increasing wants of that population will require vastly more minerals than are now being produced. Since mineral ores are being mined at lower grades, and since all minerals, including fuels, are having to be mined from deeper deposits, the amount of surface land to be disturbed will, inevitably, be increased. We cannot depend on foreign sources to supply all the extra requirements, since the non-U.S. population is increasing, in most cases, faster than our own. Furthermore, starting from a lower base, their mineral needs may accelerate more rapidly than ours. Restrictions on exports may be applied in foreign countries, if it appears that remaining reserves are not sufficient to fill the national needs. "Sonic drilling is a relatively new technology even though it has been in development since the late 1940s. It was initially funded by the U.S. petroleum industry and then, in the late 40s, Russian scientists worked on developing sonic drilling, their interest based on drilling rates 3 to 20 times that of conventional methods. In the early 1960s, the Shell Oil Company backed research that resulted in a down-hole device with a series of eccentric weights driven by drilling fluid to generate vibration. Hawker Sidley, in the early 1980s, developed the first modern prototype sonic drills in Vancouver B.C. and the North Star Drilling Company in Minnesota became the first contractor in the U.S. to operate sonic equipment in 1985. In 1994, North Star became a division of Boart Longyear, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.What’s Unique about a Sonic DrillA sonic drill rig appears and operates very much like any conventional top-drive rotary rig. The key difference is that a sonic drill has a specially designed hydraulically powered drill head, containing oscillators, that generates adjustable high-frequency vibratory forces. The sonic head is attached directly to the drill pipe or outer casing, sending the high frequency vibrations down through the drill steel to the face of the drill bit. This creates displacement, fracturing or shearing action depending on the material being drilled. The oscillator uses two eccentric, counter-rotating balance weights or rollers that are timed to direct 100% of the vibration at 0 degrees and 180 degrees. An air spring houses the oscillators and separates the vibration from the drill rig itself. The vibratory frequency is controlled to suit operating conditions and to achieve optimum drilling rates.When the vibrations coincide with the natural resonant frequency of the steel drill rod or casing, a natural phenomenon called “resonance” occurs. It allows the rig to transfer timed vibratory energy into the top of the drill string, utilizing the natural stored energy of the steel. This causes the drill string to use inertia and act like a flywheel delivering tremendous amounts of energy directly to the bit face. In friendly overburden formations, a sonic drill rig can achieve penetration rates of one ft per second."
