In the interest of safety in mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: 1. That cages or skips used for hoisting or lowering men in vertical and steeply inclined shafts shall be provided with safety catches designed to prevent falling of the cage or skip if the hoisting rope or other connections break; and 2. That cars used. for hoisting or lowering men with ropes in slopes shall be provided with arresting devices, other than ordinary brakes, that come into action if the hoisting rope or other connections break. In presenting this decision, it is recognized that the principal requirements for safety in hoisting operations are the use of hoisting ropes of ample size and strength to provide a factor of safety recognized as adequate by the best en engineering practice; their proper care, protection against undue wear and corrosion, and frequent inspection; and immediate removal of ropes from service when inspection or tests cast doubt upon their further safe serviceability.

Qualitative and quantitative results obtained during the physical modeling of the molten aluminum flow in a tundish using an aqueous system are presented. Surface tuft, free-surface powder and laser sheet visualization techniques were utilized for qualitative studies, whereas laser Doppler velocimetry was used to elucidate the 3-D flow regimes quantitatively. The results of the study are used for validation of the CFD codes, and to explore the effect of the alterations below the nozzle in order to: (1) decrease turbulence levels, and (2) collect the inclusions. Near the nozzle, the interaction of the impinging jet and the inclined walls gives rise to vortex structures. Downstream of the nozzle, two counter-rotating secondary cells diminish in strength. As flow turns through the bend, a separation region is created. The flow heading into the closed duct is seen to be nonsymmetric. A video tape highlighting the major findings is presented.

The isothermal reduction kinetics of vanadium titanium magnetite sintering ore was investigated by thermo-gravimetric analysis at a temperature range of 1123–1223 K under 30% CO + 70% N2 gas mixtures. The apparent activation energy of reduction was calculated by iso-conversional method and its value is 36.7 kJ/mol. The model function describing the reduction mechanism was discussed by Sharp analysis and the results revealed that the reduction process is controlled first by random nucleation and nucleus growth mechanism (RNNGM) as reduction degree is lower than 0.5, followed by the mixed influence of RNNGM and phase boundary reaction when reduction degree is higher than 0.5.

THE joint meetings of the Mining Geology Committee and the Society of Economic Geologists proved to be deservedly popular, and the interesting papers drew an attendance which strained the capacity of one of the large meeting rooms.. As might be expected these days when even the Supreme Court can't keep away from the subject of gold, the discussions opened on Thursday morning with several papers devoted to questions of structural and mineralogical relationships of the deposits of this metal. The presentation of Ira B. Joralemon's paper, "Veins and Faults in the Bralorne Mine," by Reno Sales, elicited considerable discussion on the relation of mariposite to gold, and the situation of the gold deposits with respect -to the Coast Range batholith. H. V. Warren stated that lie had observed mariposite always to be associated with gold in this region, but that gold was not always associated with mariposite. He pointed out that there is a series of veins on the west side of the batholith with a different mineralogy that, because of their richness but small size could quite easily make good, small mines. John A. Dresser concurred in this, and said lie thought this region was one of great promise for the mining geologist. He also reported having found mariposite associated with gold values below commercial limits, in the Appalachian regions.

This report describes a method developed by the Bureau of Mines for sealing horizontal degasification holes so that they do not create a gas explosion hazard when intercepted by mining. A cement slurry is pumped into the hole through an injection pipe that extends to the back of the hole. Pumping continues until the slurry returns through the annulus to the hole collar. The hole is then shut in and the grout allowed to harden. Application of the procedure to six horizontal degasification holes at Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Honey Run shaft is discussed.

With a demand for increasing energy efficiency and a need for improving bitumen recovery, a highly integrated solution for sustainable lease development of Aurora North of Syncrude has been proposed and implementation plans are underway. Flocculation and thickening technology as an important component of the integrated solution provides Syncrude an opportunity of rapid heat recovery from tailings and more flexible tailings closure and reclamation options. Flocculation of fine-particle suspensions by polymers is a non-equilibrium process whose performance is strongly influenced by physical and chemical variables. While polymeric flocculants are frequently used to establish the chemical conditions favorable for flocculation, the actual performance of a flocculation process generally depends more on the physical variables, such as the hydrodynamic conditions in mixing the flocculants and slurry. In order to study the effect of hydrodynamic conditions on flocculation of Syncrude fine tailings, a standardized laboratory test procedure called power flocculation has been developed in comparison with the conventional manual mixing methods. It is shown that the agitation speed and time in conditioning the flocculant solution and the slurry have a profound effect on the flocculation performances measured by initial settling rates, supernatant clarity and sediment density. It was found that the optimum bench test conditions for power flocculation of Aurora fine tailings with a sand-to-fine ratio (SFR) of about 1:1 are conditioning of the flocculant solution and the tailings slurry at 250 rev/min to 300 rev/min in 20 s to 40 s. The test results are inter-preted with a flocculant adsorption/redistribution kinetic model that helps understanding of the effect of hydrodynamic conditions on flocculant adsorption, floc formation and floc growth.

Mr. President, and Members of the Rocky Mountain Coal-Mining Institute-Gentlemen : I appreciate the distinction of addressing this representative body of men upon a subject that lies so close to the heart of each one of us, and which is one of the principal objects of our gathering here today, in this beautiful city-so beautiful, with its grand and glorious mountains looking down upon us, that its charm makes us almost forget the men we left toiling "underneath the ground." But that object-the safeguarding of our coal-miners, who spend the greater part of their lives delving in the bowels of the earth-is the cause of our gathering from the "rock-ribbed" States of Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado. And, as I look about me, my eye lights on the face of many an old-time friend- on some with whom I have walked for more than thirty years; so, whatever the merit of this little talk of mine, it cannot be said that it was made by a "tenderfoot." You must not for a moment think that I shall attempt the impossible task of completely covering so comprehensive a subject as '(Accidents in Coal Mines,' and take much more time than has been allotted me, or would be advisable for me to consume. So I shall confine myself, as briefly as possible, to some of the most common causes of accidents, and the possible means by which these disasters may be diminished. For a great many years the cause of mine accidents and their prevention have been the subject of grave thought and investigation by both national and state governments. As early as 1835 Great Britain appointed a royal commission of talented men, possessing special knowledge in the conduct of coal- mining, also eminent authorities in science and its application, to search into these matters. Control of non-metallic inclusions in terms of morphology, number density or composition is essential to produce steel products having the desired mechanical properties.Though many studies have been conducted to clarify various properties and evolution mechanisms of inclusions at steelmaking temperature, it has been reported that the states of inclusions in final products are significantly different from those in crude steels for some steel grades. The present study has focused on the evolution of oxide and nitride inclusions in solid Fe–Al–Ti–N alloys during heating to increase the understanding of inclusion evolution in a simplified metal system. Compositional and morphological change of initial inclusions, as well as precipitation and growth of new inclusions have been observed even when the alloy was in a solid state.This behavior has been observed due to the change of thermodynamic stability and solubility of existing phases in inclusions.

Concentrations of minerals between 3.5 and 5 specific gravity such as ilmenite, rutile and zircon in large accumulations of sand constitute "heavy mineral" placers. Two fundamentally different modes of formation characterize "trap" and "bed" placer variants. Smaller and generally higher grade trap placers form during sediment erosion or reworking. Because of their smaller size, they rarely yield economic heavy mineral deposits. They become economic, either if they contain more valuable "heavies" such as gold, or, if they occur within or near much larger but lower grade bed placers. Bed placers form during sediment accumulation episodes in any environment and lithofacies where mineral supply and fluid dynamics are favorable. Three heavy mineral deposits are discussed to illustrate bed placer geology and how trap placers occur with and relate to them.

A high-pressure laboratory elution rig was commissioned to simulate industrial Zadra and AARL elution conditions for the stripping of gold, silver and mercury from loaded activated carbon. It was found that cyanide was essential for the efficient elution of both mercury and silver, while gold was found to elute most effectively in hot, low-ionic strength solutions. Therefore, the standard AARL-type elution, which implements a cyanide soak and water elution, results in a lower recovery of mercury and silver from the carbon. No single set of conditions was found whereby gold, silver and mercury can all be effectively eluted in a single step. However, sequential elution conditions can efficiently recover all metals and provide a potential approach for separating these metals.

Various chapters already written in the history of development of the North Dome of Kettleman Hills are monotonoysly identical in the one underlying' theme of conservation of oil and gas. Discovered on Oct. 4, 1928, by Milham Exploration Co. with its wildcat Elliot No. 1, the field has been subjected to practically every modern form of production restraint in the name of conservation. The record thus far developed shows that conservation was had for a time, at a price; and that unitiza-tion must be blessed by single ownership or 100 per cent participation to be effective. In fact, incomplete unitization places a heavy handicap upon its participants in the competitive development that follows. Shut-in Agreement of July 25, 1929 Not long after discovery at Kettleman but after the Continental Oil Co. and the Standard Oil Co. had completed several producing wells in the discovery group, came the so-called Shut-in Agreement negotiated at the instance of the Department of the Interior. This agreement became effective July 25, 1929. The fundamental purpose of the agreement was to prevent bringing on production of some 30 wells then being drilled and forestall a flood of Kettleman oil on the market. A cooperative scheme was developed whereby wells in the discovery group would continue to produce. Two of them could not be shut in. Drilling wells would be completed to a water shutoff in top of Temblor and operations suspended. Producing wells would contribute the value of 10 to 25 per cent of their production to the owners of suspended qualifying wells. The percentage rate of drainage contribution was left to a committee or umpire. Some acreage was not placed under the agreement. This same acreage later did not come into the Kettleman Unit Agreement. Several wells on this acreage did not contribute to the drainage fund. The total amount of oil produced during the 17 months of the shut-in agreement, by Milham, Continental and Standard from wells in the discovery group, was 5,297,262.22 bbl. The total amount paid out in "drainage" contributions was $2,046,048.18, representing sales value of 1,266,044.06 bbl. of oil.

1. The investigation shows that the Poplar Creek and Big Mary beds contain the largest known recoverable reserves of coal in Morgan County, Tenn. The Poplar Creek bed has been the most productive. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves of coal, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 96 million tons, as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 59 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

During the past two years California has developed a new and important oil-field: I refer to Midway. This field produced the famous Lake View gusher, which is credited with a total production in excess of 8,000,000 barrels. Fortunately for the oil industry of the State, this well is now a thing of the past, and nothing, save a great crater-like opening marks its location. The pipe is entirely worn away and gone; and it is a matter of serious doubt if there can be anything done that will cause the well to produce again. Fortunately, also, there have been no other wells in that field or elsewhere throughout the State that in any may compared with the Lake View. Midway is noted for large wells, of from 500 to 2,000 barrels production; but the decline is rapid, and a few months serve to bring the output down to a few hundred barrels. In the oil-territory heretofore blocked out as proved and probable, there have been, during the year, many changes. Some areas which were expected to be fairly productive have apparently failed; others, more strictly "wild-cat," have come in; while in some of the older fields there are properties which are beginning to shorn evident signs of exhaustion. The results from three quick methods for the determination of W03 in scheelite ore samples, mill products and concentrates were compared with gravimetric results and tested with standard samples to establish which was the most reliable. Summaries of the methods, two X-Ray fluorescence and one colorimetric, are given. The best method was X-Ray fluorescence, with samples cast as glass discs.

Joseph Priestley prepared oxygen on Aug. I, 1774, and noted with great surprise "that a candle burned in this air with a remarkable brilliant flame." On Aug. 2, 1774, some ironmaker possibly began to wonder if this substance could be used to increase his rate of production; at any rate, there is no disputing the fact that the notion of using oxygen for steelmaking in concentrations greater than that available in great abundance—as air—has been in existence for years. Action was delayed by the lack of enough oxygen at a cost within reach of the steelmaker. Within the last several years enough has been available to permit large-scale tests of its use for both combustion, with which this paper is concerned, and for decarburization. The literature is now enormous and easily available; it is sufficient here to cite three items of historic importance in that all are about 25 years old and in that all are remarkably consistent as far as they go, with what is known today.1,2,3 Significance of High-temperature Heat The principal function of the open-hearth furnace is to supply sufficient high-temperature heat to melt the charge and then to increase its temperature to a range suitable for tapping, ordinarily in the neighborhood of 2900°F. That heat is required to make steel is understood by everybody; however, there seems to be some confusion now and then about the significance of high-temperature heat. Transfer of energy—and heat is energy— is always from a point of higher potential to a point of lower potential and, other things being equal, the greater the potential difference, the greater is the rate of transfer of energy. In the open hearth the flame, of course, is the high-potential source. Perhaps the most satisfactory approach is through the notion of theoretical flame temperature, which is the ratio of heat input to the heat content of the combustion products,* the former is composed mainly of heat of combustion of the fuel plus sensible heat of the fuel plus sensible heat of the combustion air. Thus, flame temperature can be increased by increasing the value of the numerator, by decreasing the value of the denominator, or both. The first method is as old as the open-hearth process and, of course, makes use of preheated air; its possibilities have been by no means exhausted. The second method can be put into effect only by changing the composition of the combustion air, since the combustion of a given quantity of fuel produces a definite quantity of product, and since the denominator includes the non-reactive fraction of the air, principally nitrogen. In other words, the denominator consists of the volume of exit gas multiplied by its heat capacity and that volume consists of carbon dioxide and water vapor as reaction

Net Present Value (NPV) derived from Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis remains the dominant metric for evaluating mining projects despite its well-documented inability to capture managerial flexibility under uncertainty. DCF assumes that all risks are perfectly priced by financial markets. This is an unlikely assumption for volatile commodity prices, geological variability, or the array of mining technical and operational risks present on all mine sites. Real Options Analysis (ROA) was developed to remedy this limitation by explicitly valuing the ability of managers to defer, expand, scale, switch, or abandon investments as new information emerges, and to capture upside and mitigate downside risks. While ROA is philosophically correct and routinely shows an uplift in project value compared with DCF, its practical application at industrial scale is severely constrained, ROA faces the reality of a combinatorial explosion in complexity of decision trees, Monte Carlo simulations and other models required when multiple interdependent or sequential options exist across numerous mining zones and time periods. The AMC Hill of Value® (HoV) process adopts the same intellectual foundation as ROA, that flexibility has economic value, but operationalizes it through a far more robust and scalable architecture. It is built on parametric relationships, rapid scheduling, and multi-objective evolutionary optimisation. HoV can evaluate millions of compound, interdependent real options in a single optimisation run, delivering resilient, adaptive strategies that preserve managerial flexibility while simultaneously optimising NPV, mine life, risk exposure, and other corporate objectives. This paper demonstrates that HoV is the practical, industrial-scale embodiment of real options thinking in mining: it discovers, ranks, and translates the most valuable real options into strategic mine plans, overcoming the scalability barriers that have prevented widespread adoption of classical ROA.
