Development work in mines of St. Joseph Lead Co., Southeast Missouri, using trackless loading equipment shows definite advantages: Speed of cleaning, ability to work on steep grades and sharp crosscuts, good later tracking conditions, and possibility of wasting rock in old abandoned stopes. THE Desloge mine is one of a group of mines owned by the St. Joseph Lead Co., in the so-called Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri. It has been operating approximately 40 years producing a daily tonnage ranging from 1600 to 3800, depending on various factors. On an average, the present mine is 300 ft deep with an extreme extent of 2.7 miles by 1.7 miles. Most of the present mining is in the lower horizons of the Bonne Terre dolomite, a fairly soft rock requiring no support except occasional channel iron and roof pins. Due to the contour of the underlying sandstone and porphyry, some development work has been through short stretches of these different formations. In some areas the lower part of the dolomite is quite sandy and generally is considered abrasive. Sizes and Methods of Drifting Have Changed: Development work has, like other phases of mining, changed considerably in the last 20 years, from cleaning by hand to the use of a mechanical method. The conception of a standard drift has also changed. Before the advent of mechanical loading in stopes there were many pieces of main line drift averaging 7 ft high x 9 ft wide. Now with the Joy loader and shuttle car, a 9x11 ft drift is coming to be standard size. Methods of cutting drifts have changed considerably over the last few years. Some changes in drilling equipment have been made such as reducing the weight of column, clamp, air feed, and fittings to go with the HC10 Cleveland jackhamer. Other changes have been made in drill steel such as the use of detachable bits; throw-away variety, screw type, and the tungsten-carbide insert bits. Later developments have introduced spiral-welded pipe with victaulic couplings, millisecond exploders, bulky powder, and the use of electric cap lamps. Experimental work is going on continually in various phases of development work, some to be tried and discarded, others gradually to become standard practice. To sum up, the standard method of development now in use at Desloge is as follows: The work is done on a two-shift cycle 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Two men known as development drillers comprise a crew on each shift. These two men arrive at their work about 7:30 to find a round blasted by the previous shift. After scaling down back and walls they proceed to the cleaning operation, using either a Joy loader and shuttle car, a drag hoist mounted on a slide ramp, or an Eimco Finlay to load into a 21/2 ton mine car. Cleaning may take from 2 to 4 hr depending on conditions such as length of round broken, length of haul, and other variables. After fitting up pipe and setting up columns and drills they are ready to drill a round which should measure 9 ft high x 11 ft wide and break from 5 to 7 ft advance. FOR reasons well known to mining engineers, wet grinding is quite universal in plants having to do with the extraction of metallic values from crude ores. In the processing of the nonmetallic and industrial minerals, dry grinding is the more common method. The crude materials usually contain less moisture than is required for wet grinding and the products usually are marketed in dry form; most of them as powders. To grind wet, therefore, would entail the addition of water and an expense for drying the product, which is not justified. Furthermore, the material would be a dried cake that would still have to be pulverized or disintegrated before use. For producing fine products, air separators have largely replaced the earlier practice of sizing with screens and bolting reels. Mills in which the air-separating feature is an integral part of the design are now commonplace. Mill designs are many and air systems have developed along various lines, but for the purpose of this discussion, only the fundamental idea need be emphasized the idea of using air for sizing and removing pulverized material from a grinding mill. About 20 years ago, when the use of mills equipped with air separation had become common practice, heated air or gas was introduced to such a system for the removal of moisture. The purpose of this discussion is to outline the developments and trends that have followed this experiment. It is an important development, for mills equipped with air separation are now universally used for pulverizing not only nonmetallic and industrial minerals, but a great variety of other materials. All such mills are essentially the same. Dried material is pulverized, removed by an air stream, trapped in a cyclone collector, and relatively clean air from the cyclone is returned through a fan to the mill. There is no theoretical need for a vent from the system. The practical need is to vent the air that leaks into the system, and, since the cyclone is not 100 per cent efficient as a dust collector, this vented air carries some dust with it. The initial attempt. at drying was made on a system like that described, by the addition of a furnace. The minus pressure within the mill draws hot gas from the furnace. Infiltration air, along with the drying gases and evaporated moisture, is vented as before. The first application was made to a mill used for pulverizing coal. The coal contained very little moisture, so very little drying effect was needed for the success of this experiment. Actually, some calculated efficiencies of over 100 per cent were obtained before due allowance was made for the conversion of mill power into useful heat. When moisture is low,, the heat obtained from the conversion of mill power is an appreciable part of that required. In designing structural members of steel and some other materials the design engineer has available recognized values of elastic modulus and safe working stress that may be substituted in well-known engineering formulas to give him desired cross-sectional areas and deflections for a particular part. Zinc, on the other hand, has no generally recognized modulus. It flows under continuously applied loads. Therefore, the designer of structural members must use a range of working stresses depending on the continuous load and the amount of permissible distortion. The only method of obtaining these values is by creep testing. Creep testing of zinc has been carried on for some 20 years by this laboratory, covering a wide range of zinc and zinc alloys. Types of test included tension, compression, and simple and cantilever beams at temperatures ranging from o to I50°C. Specimen conditions ranged from as-cast or as-rolled to accelerated aged in steam or dry air. Effects of plating were investigated also. It is not the intention of this paper to expound all these factors but rather to present the final data on well-known zinc die-casting alloys and to suggest means of applying these data to engineering design. Early Work In the early work on creep testing of zinc, the direct-loading tension method was used. However, direct loading of die castings was unsatisfactory because of the high loads required. For instance, a standard die-cast tension bar having a cross-sectional area of about 0.049 sq. in. would require a direct load of about 1000 lb. for a unit stress of 20,000 lb. per sq. in. Also, tests were made at nominal room temperature, but normal variations caused fluctuations greater than those due to experimental error or other causes, so that control of this variable within ±1/2°C. seemed essential. These two factors led to the development of an apparatus described by J. Ruzicka,' in which the specimens were loaded by means of a lever and were held at constant temperature by means of an oil bath. While Ruzicka's apparatus yielded excellent check results, it seemed desirable to have some setup by which literally hundreds of die-cast specimens could be tested at the same time. This would permit the conducting of a number of low-load tests designed to run 10 years or longer and still leave capacity for current high-load work. Beam testing in a constant-temperature room was the answer. Test Method Preliminary work indicated that die-cast beams of various lengths and cross scctions yielded the same result within reasonable limits regardless of whether they were tested as simple beams, uniformly loaded beams, or cantilevers. Examination of tensile bar surfaces shortly after destructive testing was conducted to search for clues that would aid in optimization of mechanical properties, especially tensile strength, yield strength and elongation to fracture. Cu-Ni-Si-Cr alloy bars in the as-cast, forged, rolled and extruded conditions were examined. Low ductility bars (<4% Elongation) showed dramatically different features than the fracture surfaces of high strength - high ductility bars (7 to 10% Elongation). Analysis of the fracture surfaces at 15X to 2000X and use of Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) identified Ni-Si and Ni-Si-Cr precipitates of varying sizes and morphologies. Thermo-mechanical processing techniques to control the size and distribution of these precipitates show promise in improving the properties and performance of this alloy system and appear to correlate with improvements in the fracture surface morphology.

From time to time, one of the authors has had occasion to investigate the graphitizing reaction and has published the results mainly as discussion&apos; of the work of other investigators. In view, therefore, of the diversity of both observations and interpretation, it seemed well to attempt, a revision of the entire subject in the Research Laboratory of the National Malleable Castings Co. The work consisted of a careful study of a single, impure, iron-carbon alloy. The material, which may be considered typical low-carbon white cast iron of the malleable industry, was an air-furnace iron of the following composit,ion: carbon 2.30 per cent., silicon 1.20 per cent., manganese 0.29 per cent., phosphorus 0.156 per cent., sulfur 0.048 per cent. The freezing range extended from 1213&apos; to 1132&apos; C., the latter figure agreeing with Gontermann&apos;s data.2 We have attempted to define the equilibrium diagram of this alloy, in the stable condition as related to the mctastable diagr,aui,- from a temperature somewhat below the euteetic freezing point to a temperature l>clow Arl and for a graphitic-carbon content from practically notliing to the original total rarbon of the specimen (see Fig. 6). Large areas of ground are permanently supported on coal pillars, both in extensive old workings and current drivages in active mining operations. Continued growth of civil infrastructure is resulting in more surface development above old bord and pillar mines and an increased need for mine development beneath existing surface structures and features. The result is a greater likelihood of conflict between miners, developers and regulatory bodies. However, over the last 40 years there has also been significant improvement in the general level of understanding of pillar behaviour and stability, both in Australia and overseas. This paper examines some of the issues to be considered when undermining surface structures or undertaking surface development above old workings. The Factor of Safety (FoS) methodology widely employed for the assessment of pillar stability is reviewed, including the key geometrical, geological and statistical concepts associated with the probability of pillar failure; local and international experiences are examined and significant parameters isolated. Common concerns are addressed in the context of actual practical experience, utilising a risk management approach. Recent advances in methods for the assessment of pillar stability are put forward, along with criteria for arriving at rational design outcomes.

The occurrence of heavy minerals in the oil sands of Alberta has long been known and has been well documented in the literature. Unfortunately most of the researchers working on this resource have been unable to produce products that meet acceptable market specifications. This has resulted in many misconceptions about this resource. Recent efforts have shown that with some innovative approaches, marketable material can be produced and as a result it might finally be possible to realize the potential of this immense resource that, some have estimated, could contain in excess of 20% of the world demand by 2010. This paper highlights the uniqueness of this mineral assemblage and the mineral processing challenges it presents. It shows the most recent work that has resulted in the production of marketable titanium and zircon products. This paper also focuses on some of the special problems resulting from the variability in the heavy mineral suite. Of special interest is the occurrence and removal of bitumen and pyrite without adding to the sulphur dioxide loading in the regional airshed. The trend by the mining industry to develop various positions on ‘sustainable mining’ has some significance for the heavy mineral industry. Although the industry generally has an excellent track record of eventually rehabilitating disturbed ground in an acceptable manner, heavy mineral mining operations tend to have a relatively large footprint of disturbance and the industry is under considerable pressure to develop options that are more environmentally acceptable. In addition, as operators move to exploit deposits that are lower grade and/or are further from a port site, the emissions per unit of sold product will also rise and the industry will be under pressure to address this issue as well. Because heavy minerals from oil sands are by-products of existing operations, there are virtually no incremental disturbances or emissions that would be associated with heavy mineral production. All mining and tailings remediation issues are accounted for by the oil sand operation. The only incremental emissions would be those associated with the mineral processing operations and transport of finished products to a port site. This paper discusses the environmental and cost implications of this situation.

The Inland Steel Company operates five underground iron mines in the Lake Superior District. The two largest of these, from the standpoint of productive capacity, are the Sherwood Mine in Iron River and the Bristol Mine in Crystal Falls, both on the Menominee Range of Michigan. It is at these two mines that we have had our principal experience with belt conveyor installations underground, .At the Sherwood Mine, which has an annual capacity of about 450,000 tons, the first conveyor belt installationwas made in 1947 when conveyors were installed in the main haulage drifts on the 1200 ft, level, It was estimated at that time that approximately 5,000,000 tons would be mined from the stopes above the 1200 ft, level and. that if all this material could be moved to the shaft by belt conveyor, the entire cost of operation, including maintenance and the amortization of the equipment, would be about $,05 per ton, which was slightly more than half of what the cost would have been by conventional tramming methods employing locomotives and cars. Now, ten years later, the 1200 ft, level is almost completely mined out and we have actually removed. 5,200,000 tons and. the average cost of transporting this material to the shaft by belt conveyor has been $.095 per ton. Since there has been a substantial increase in hourly rate of pay and also in the cost of materials since 1947, we feel that the anticipated savings were very nearly realized., The 1200 ft, level installation at the Sherwood consisted of two 36" trunk line conveyors 815 feet long and 380 feet long, respectively, deliverying ore to the shaft. These in turn were fed. by three lateral 36" conveyors which paralleled the sides of the orebody, These gathering conveyors passed under draw points to which ore was brought from the stopes by mea S of scrapers or shaker conveyors, Shaker conveyors were used for a number of years in conjunction with the conveyor belt system of haulage but it was finally concluded that with this particular type of ore, the maintenance on shaker conveyors was excessive. Therefore, more recently, we have gone back to scrapers for the shorter distances and. are using belt conveyors in the scraper drifts for the longer distances. After this belt system had been in operation for about three years, it had proved to be so successful that it was decided to proceed with the same system or. a new level to be opened up 200 feet below. Instead of sinking the shaft and driving a horizontal drift to the orebody on the 1400 ft, level, an inclined conveyor drift was started near the shaft at the 1200 ft. level and driven downwards toward, the orebody at a slope of 15 degrees. The conveyor installed in this inclined drift is 36" wide, 990 feet long, is powered. by a 100 hp motor, and is capable of delivering 300 tons per hour to the 1200 ft, level shaft pocket. It is fed by lateral horizontal conveyors on the 1300 ft? 1400 ft., and 1425 ft, sub levels. Wien the inclined drift was started, the rock was scraped from the breast directly to the rock pocket at the shaft. As the distance increased., double scraping was employed, until the advance had reached 350 feet, At this point a portion of the final conveyor was installed, with a scraper slide near the breast, T e drift was then advanced be scraping on to the conveyor until a sufficient distance had been driven to permit the installation of an additional 200 feet of conveyor. This proved to be a very efficient and economical means of moving the development rock to the shaft and obviated the need of using cars or an inclined skip way, At the present time 85 percet of tie entire mine output is being mined below the 1200 ft, level and is delivered to the shaft via the inclined conveyor. The system appears to be working as well and as economically as did the conveyor systemonthe 1200 ft, level.

"DISCLAIMER: the statements presented herein are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of US DoD or its Components.ABSTRACTProgress on the $750M lock project on the Monongahela River was derailed by discovery of large anomalies in the 6.5-7-ft dia. drilled shafts of the new river wall foundation. The anomalies were located 45 to 50’ below the top of the wall at the critical shaft-to-wall interface, and ranged in thickness from several inches to 2-plus feet. A Specialty team, comprised of representatives from the contractor, the Government, and structural design consultants, was formed to evaluate the extent of the problem and the impact on the new lock wall. With no standard method in place, the Government took the lead to develop acceptance criteria for the repairs while the contractor took the lead to identify the repair means and methods. The Government developed a detailed Quality Control plan to capture and document all of the repair data and to approve each shaft repair in a timely manner. This paper provides an overview of the anomalies encountered and the need for repairs; discusses the details of the repair plan; and provides details on the unique quality control measures employed to verify the repairs. By developing and adhering to a detailed quality control plan, the structural integrity of all of the shafts was successfully restored.INTRODUCTIONThe new Charleroi Locks Project is currently under construction by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the region, the Corps of Engineers is modernizing the series of locks and dams on the Monongahela River. One facet of this modernization is replacement of the existing Locks #4 (aka Charleroi Locks) located upstream of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with new and larger capacity locks. The relative location of the project is shown on Fig. 1. The original construction of twin locks (56’x720’ & 56’x360’) and the fixed-crest dam was completed in 1932, with lock walls supported on timber pile foundations. The fixed crest dam was replaced with a gated dam in the 1960’s. The existing lock is undersized and in poor condition and thus needs to be replaced. The project requires the construction of the new river chamber adjacent to the existing land chamber which must remain operational to navigation throughout the construction. In order to accomplish this, the lock walls need to be constructed in the wet. The river wall was constructed using two construction methods referred to on the project as “cofferbox” and “non-cofferbox” construction."

"Seamount cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (hereafter crusts) are authigenic iron/manganese hydroxide/oxide deposits formed from direct precipitation of minerals from seawater onto a hard substrates surface. Crusts contain significant concentrations of cobalt, manganese, nickel, copper, platinum, rare earth elements and other valuable metallic elements, with potential economic value. Regulations on Prospecting and Exploration for Cobalt-rich Ferromanganese Crusts in the "Area" was approved by the Council and Assembly of the International Seabed Authority in July 2012, China and Japan became the first to obtain exploration contracts, which were signed respectively in April and January 2014.The crusts form pavements and are mainly attached tightly to the surface of the substrate, and less commonly crusts coat talus debris located on the surface of sediment and substrate rock. During prospecting, crust sampling methods mainly include dredge, TVgrab and sub-bottom coring system. During exploration, the sub-bottom coring will be the dominant method for crust sampling, and if necessary, ROV sampling will be used. Usually the samples collected by different methods provide a larger quantity than samples needed for chemical analysis, but sampling quantity is a question that should be considered for mineral resource evaluation that how to ensure that the sampling is representation for the sampling station. Using the samples collected by China from Pacific seamounts, according to the designed analysis flow and Qeqott formula (Q=Kd2), the minimum reliable assay sample quantity ("MRASQ") of crusts for Mn, Co, and Ni are obtained. In the case of the sample homogeneous fines at ~100 mesh size (~0.15 mm), MRASQ for Mn, Co, Ni is respectively 4.5 g, 9 g and 9 g. This result provides the basic data for crusts resources evaluation."

Tg Soda Ash has operated a shortwall mining system in the Green River, WY trona district since August 1982. The system has proven to be highly productive. In an effort to reduce the amount of relatively expensive development mining and improve mine planning flexibility, a method to mine the return air tailgate during the shortwall retreat was tested beginning in April 1987. As of June 1988, four shortwall panels had been completed using the advancing tailgate, producing more than 739 kt (815,000 st). This paper discusses the effects of the advancing tailgate on shortwall production, development mining requirements, costs, strata mechanics, and ventilation. Shortwall mining is a hybrid extraction method combining the self-advancing hydraulic roof supports from longwall mining and continuous mining machines (Fig. 1). The technique has been only marginally successful at the majority of the nearly 20 installations worldwide. At present, the face at Tg Soda Ash Inc. is the only shortwall operating in the United States and the only noncoal shortwall in existence. Despite the method&apos;s record of limited success, the staff at Tg Soda Ash determined that the conditions in its trona mine were well suited for shortwall mining. The commitment to install a shortwall was made in late 1981 and the first panel commenced in August 1982. Between that time and June 1988, about 3.33 Mt (3.67 million st) of trona have been mined with the system from 15 panels. Annual average productivities have ranged from 818 t/shift (902 st per shift) in 1982 to 1.4 kt/t shift (1591 st per shift) in 1987. Overall, the system has produced an average of 1.3 kt/ shift (1450 st per shift). In April 1987, a method of mining the return air tailgate during shortwall retreat was tested (Fig. 2). The objective was to determine if a return airway could be established and maintained by mining a series of rooms and pillars about 7.6 m (25 ft) past the face support line. The method would allow a barrier pillar to be left between shortwall panels without requiring the mining of a separate return air tailgate.

Due to the immense volumes of municipal wastes that are generated in this nation every year, it has become imperative that effective measures be developed to utilize all or portions of these materials in a productive and efficient manner. Nany larger municipalities employ incineration to reduce the bulk of material to be removed to disposal sites: but, even after incineration, approximately one-fourth of the original waste material in the form of non-combustible residue and flyash remain. It has been found that the flyash fraction of the incinerator residue contains varying amounts of copper, silver, gold, aluminum, iron and titanium along with many other important metals. The serious loss of these natural resources contained within the flyash and the monetary expense of current disposal methods present a serious and rapidly increasing problem to the public and to the Federal Government. The growing emphasis upon environmental control, rapidly increasing urban population and "convenience packaging" &apos;with its attendant increased waste production has led to the initiation of a broad range of studies concerning municipal waste. For example, the U. S. Bureau of I-lines is investigating all aspects of the incineration of municipal waste under its solid waste disposal program.l "In-house" studies range from improved incinerator design to potential recovery and recycling of the various components within the incinerator residue. A major portion of the latter research is being performed at the U. S. Bureau of ;-lines, College Park, Maryland facility while grants for specific areas of study have been issued to several universities and research institutes. In addition, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has supported programs examining the potential recovery of paper; glass, metals and other components of unincinerated refuse followed by disposal in sanitary landfills.

Eastern Aroostook County, Maine, contains an enormous tonnage of manganese widely distributed in manganiferous sedimentary beds composed of hematitic shale, hematitic slate, and laminated siliceous carbonate rock. The bedded deposits range in thickness from several feet to over 150 feet. Manganese minerals that occur as silicates and carbonate are so minute that they cannot be concentrated by present methods of ore dressing. From a hydrometallurgical standpoint, the deposits can best be classified by amenability to acid leaching. The deposits of Aroostook County are in three geographical groups (see fig. l), designated as the northern, central, and southern districts. At least 13 deposits are known to occur in the latter district, which covers an Ewes about 8 miles wide and 15 miles long. The Littleton Ridge deposit, on the northern boundary of the southern district, previously examined by geologists from the State and Federal Geological Surveys on the farms of Donald H. Haggerty and David A. Abernethy, was pointed out in reports as being possibly the richest and largest in the southern district. The Bureau of Mines sampled this deposit by surface trenching and diamond drilling from May 1 to September 30, 1951. A total of 23 trenches was bulldozed, aggregating 5,355 linear feet, of which 8 trenches were sampled by cutting 185 channel samples over a linear distance of 1,820 feet.

The BHP Copper Refinery at San Manuel, AZ employs conventional electro-refining technology, plating at a current density of 335 A/m2 on six kilogram copper starter sheets. In 1995, a combination of variable anode chemistries and increasing current density in the tankhouse created periods of increased bismuth in cathode. Bismuth in electrolyte was minimized by bleeding electrolyte to the nearby BHP leaching facility. However, the expected drop in cathode bismuth was not achieved. Investigations indicated that starter sheets contained a significant concentration of bismuth. The bismuth was found to occur in combination with antimony on the surface of the sheet adjacent to the mother blank. Studies were conducted to determine the mechanism by which Group VB elements are incorporated into the starte sheets. Operational practices were introduced to minimize bismuth in starter sheets and improve cathode quality.

L. Alan Weakly, member SME, is a senior staff engineer, Exxon Co. Weakly chaired a Mining Engineering committee formed to solicit materials for six planned "personal skills" articles, to be used in ME this year. What follows are Weakly&apos;s introductory comments to the series. Upon graduation from college several years ago, I thought that I was sufficiently prepared to embark in my chosen profession. A short time later I realized that several years of on-the-job training was going to be required before I could use my technical training effectively. It never occurred to me that, professionally, I was seriously lacking in any other skills. My spelling could use a little upgrading, but this was not a serious deficiency. I have been very fortunate to have had two employers that recognized that their engineering professionals did lack other skills and made every effort to give them training to correct these deficiencies. The skills I am referring to are those in administration and interpersonal relationships. Most mining engineers and geologists receive very little, if any, college training in these areas. In addition, many companies do not provide this training and many mining engineers and geologists are unaware of their deficiencies. It is for this reason the subject of personal skills development is being introduced in Mining Engineering. The mining engineer or geologist can pursue one of two basic career directions, managerial or technical. In today&apos;s technically sophisticated society and highly competitive business climate, both orientations require administrative and interpersonal skills. Most of us are technically qualified and we continue to upgrade our technical skills. But many studies indicate that we, as a group, are significantly weaker in administrative and interpersonal skills than other professional groups. In addition, these studies indicate that engineers, in general, take longer to reach managerial levels and fewer do so. This series in Mining Engineering, then, should help readers strengthen and broaden their professional capabilities. In all industries, including mining and petroleum, economic analysis of potential investment projects is done to select the projects that will give maximum future value from the investment of available capital. Rather than looking directly at the future values to be generated by investing capital in alternate ways for economic decisions, evaluators usually use either rate of return, present value, annual value, a profit to investment ratio, or various break even analysis results to reach economic analysis decisions in evaluating alternative investments. Alternative economic evaluation techniques are used in industry to properly analyze the economic potential of various investment projects. "Discounted Cash Flow" analysis is the phrase commonly used to describe these techniques. Whether you want to analyze projects in mineral, petroleum, real estate, refining, pipe-line transportation, or any other industry, proper application of discounted cash flow analysis techniques enables you to fairly compare the economic potential of alternative projects as well or better than you can using any other project evaluation approaches. It should be pointed out that investment analysis generally involves more than economic analysis. Financial and intangible considerations sometimes are as important or more important to investment decision-making than economic considerations. Economic analysis refers to evaluation of the profit generating potential of projects, that is selecting which alternative projects will generate maximum future value possible from available investment capital. Financial analysis, on the other hand, relates to analysis of where money is going to come from to finance various projects. Regardless of the economic potential of a project, if financial analysis indicates that we cannot finance the project, it likely will be shelved for financial reasons even though it may be economically satisfactory. Many evaluators use the terms "economic analysis" and "financial analysis" interchangeably, but this author considers that to be undesirable.
