Heavy equipment manufacturers have made a long-term commitment to minimize operator vibration exposure for comfort, performance, and health reasons. Domestic and international guidelines/standards and EC laws dictate exposure limits based on measurement of vibration at the interface between the seat and the operator’s buttocks using seat-pad accelerometry.1-4 This is historically based on the assumption that the only major source of vibration is transmitted through the seat pan. However, vibration may also be imparted to the head and neck via the steering wheel and/or arm-rest controls and a relatively rigid upper body.5 Unfortunately, little is known regarding the influence of arm position on head and neck motion. The purpose of this study was to investigate relative head and trunk motions during riding simulations of large construction equipment, using three different arm control options. Methods Five typical heavy equipment ride files were “played back” through a man-rated Servo Test 6-degree-of-freedom vibration system. An 8-camera Vicon motion capture system operating at 200 frames per second, recorded the motion of reflective surface markers on 5th, 50th, and 95th percentile right-handed male subjects, using 3 seat and control configurations (steering wheel (SW), floor mounted armrest controls (FM), seat-mounted armrest controls (SM)). Two trials were performed for each ride and seat control combination (each trial: 60 sec of 6-dof and 60 sec of vertical vibration). The relative motions (change in distances) from the marker over the xiphoid process (caudal end of sternum) to markers over each shoulder, each mid-clavicle, the presternal notch, and to each of four markers on a tight band around the head were calculated (12,001 frames, 6-dof motion only). As a rigid body control, distances between markers on the head band were also monitored. The standard deviation (SD) of the 12,001 distances between pairs of markers was normalized by the mean (L) of the associated distances producing: SD/L which was used as a measure of motion. Error assessments were also performed by analyzing the motion between relatively fixed markers (on the headband). A repeated measures analysis of variance was used to evaluate the results. While five ride files were used, only one ride file containing significant lateral acceleration components was analyzed for comparing the effects of two armrest controls versus use of a steering wheel for this part of our study. Results Values of SD/L between the points on the relatively rigid head band were consistently small and similar to each other for all conditions with one exception due to treatment (SM v SW, p=0.0145). SD/L between the markers over the xiphoid process and the presternal notch, another region that should be relatively rigid, were also similar to each other for all conditions. Use of floor-mounted, arm rest controls versus a steering wheel produced a significant increase in the value of SD/L between the xiphoid process and: the right shoulder marker (92%, p=0.0316), the right mid-clavicle marker (47%, p=0.0478), and the right-front marker on the head band (28%, p=0.0182). It is considered that the most economical method for the exploitation of Gol-e-Gohar Area 3 iron ore mine is to combine open-pit and underground methods. In this regard, the most critical problem is the determination of optimal final pit depth. In this paper, a method which was recently introduced on the basis of economical block models of open-pit and underground is used to determine optimal final open-pit depth of Gol-e-Gohar Area 3 mine with due regards to the future underground mining option. Considering a low cost and productive underground method as a feasible alternative for extraction of the lower part of this deposit, room and pillar was selected. It is concluded that after the assessment and comparison of different values for depth, optimal final open-pit depth was determined to be equal to 285 m.

"Demand of high pressurized gas storage in underground rock caverns is increasing. Compressed natural gas (CNG) and compressed air energy storage (CAES) are one of the promising examples after since lined rock cavern (LRC) concept has been verified through in-situ pilot tests. Two key essential concerns of high pressured gas storage in underground rock caverns are mechanical stability of the cavern against high inner storage pressure and the risk of gas leakage from the caverns.In this study, we introduce our results of numerical simulations so as to investigate the potential of monitoring for gas leakage at a pilot facility for CAES in underground LRCs. The pilot facility was constructed at a comparatively shallow depth of 100 m, compared to the previous cases with several hundreds of meters, aiming at validating the feasibility of the LRC storage concept in which inner sealing liners, consisting of steel plate and concrete linings, are installed inside the excavated rock caverns (KIGAM, 2011). Compressed air may leak through either initial defects of inner containment liners such as imperfect welding regions and in-situ construction joints of the liners, or through structurally damaged points of the liners during the CAES operation where compression and decompression of the caverns are necessarily repeated and their structural robustness can be deteriorated.For this perspective, we carried out a coupled thermodynamic and geomechanical deformation analysis using TOUGH-FLAC simulator, and investigated the effectiveness of strain monitoring method in detecting mechanical failure of liners which may provide major pathways of air leakage. We therefore used an equivalent continuum model to relate the localized tangential strain to fracture permeability changes, which was developed in our early work (Rutqvist et al, 2012). In detecting and characterizing the leakage location, we tested a cross correlation technique using the synthetic pressure responses monitored in case of the failure of the inner liners. From the investigations, we showed that tangential strain, rather than radial, monitoring especially at the inner face of the sealing liners can be more effective in detecting the mechanical failure of the liners.In localizing the leakage point, we noted that the interface between the inner liners and surrounding rock may not be perfectly bonded so as to increase permeability through which any leaking air pressure may migrate more dominantly. We also demonstrated that the cross correlation of the time histories of pressure measurement especially at these interfaces can be useful in identifying the leakage point. These results may provide useful information in overall design of monitoring and alarming system of our upcoming CAES pilot facilities."

"Any economic calculation with respect to potential submarine mining activities requires reliable analytical data on the contents of valuable metals in these ores, including trace metals such as rare earth elements as well as Ti, Mo, V, Zr and Li. Due to the very special matrix of ferromanganese nodules (30% manganese oxides, 10-20% iron oxides, silicates; see Kuhn et al., this volume), their geochemical analyses pose a real challenge. Available ferromanganese nodules reference materials, e.g., NOD-P1 and A1, JMn-1, GBW07249, SDO-4 to -7 and NM2388, generally have only a few certified values for trace elements. Published data for these reference materials, collected in the GeoReM database (http://georem.mpch-mainz.gwdg.de/) are either rare for high technology metals or widely scattered for certain elements, especially the PGEs. Since most of these materials were released in the 1990s, many analytical procedures have seen significant advancement.In order to facilitate analytical quality assurance during exploration and potential future mining activities, the German Federal Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (BGR) has contracted the Central Geological Laboratory of Mongolia (CGL) to produce a certified reference material for nodule analytics. Certified reference materials provide the highest level of reliability in geo-analytical measurements currently available and the CGL has a long-term experience in producing geological reference materials. Recently, the CGL was accredited as a reference material producer according to ISO Guide 34 by the American organization ACLASS (Assured Calibration and Laboratory Accreditation Select Services). Furthermore, it has been accredited as a testing laboratory according to ISO 17025."

Implementation of post-closure draindown estimates for tailings facilities are important predictive tools for reclamation planning and often influence jurisdictional bonding. Simplified estimates of draindown have been proposed in the past but these methods are not able to capture many of the site-specific nuances as well as operational and material parameters that influence robust draindown estimates. This paper discusses an iterative approach that relies on unsaturated flow models to predict draindown rates and associated pond inventory water balances that track inputs into underdrain pond systems, solution storage volumes, implementation of active evaporation, and necessary recirculation of solution back to the tailings facilities. Specific design criteria such as climate, facility geometry, material properties, and initial conditions, as well as active closure operational considerations that can influence draindown estimate will be discussed. Concepts presented will be valuable for operators, designers, and regulators to guide closure planning and predictive analytical analyses that support draindown estimates.

The gravimetric integral Knudsen effusion method was used to measure cadmium activity values in binary liquid In-Cd alloys in the range 523 to 573 K. The activity measurements together with other studies from the literature indicate that special bonding conditions exist in the melts near a composition corresponding to InCd3. Sound velocities in In-Cd melts were also measured using a precision pulse-echo over- lap method in the range 404 to 953 K. The frac- tional deviation of experimental and ideal isentropic compressibilities at 623K shows a functional dependence on composition with a pronounced maximum near the composition 75 at.%.

TWENTY-ONE of the states in the Union, the Territory of Hawaii, and seven provinces of Canada now have in operation laws requiring that professional engineers be registered or licensed. In addition, two states require that civil engineers be registered, and one other state demands registration of structural engineers. Moreover, nearly every year sees additions made to the list. The registration movement, fostered by the American Association of Engineers, now has the powerful, energetic backing of the An1,erican Society of Civil Engineers, which is itself now fostering registration legislation, and there is a strong sentiment in favor of registration in the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Only in the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is anti-registration sentiment, strongly dominant, but many members of this organization are enthusiastic advocates of registration.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines operated a 2,000-9 (4.4-lb) batch process development unit for recovering platinum-group metals (PGM) from automobile catalysts. Virgin monolith, used pellet and used monolith catalyst samples were tested. Leaching twice with 1-pct sodium cyanide (NaCN) solution at 160' C for 1 h in a pressure vessel dissolved over 95 pct of the PGM from virgin catalysts and over 90 pct from used pellet catalysts. Over 85 pct of the PGM was dissolved from used monolith catalysts when a third leaching step was added. PGM concentrates as metallic powder containing over 99.8 pct of the dissolved PGM and analyzing greater than 70 pct PGM were recovered by heating the pregnant leach solutions from virgin catalysts to 250' C and used catalyst to 275" C for 1 h. The solution after heating contained primarily sodium carbonate from cyanide decomposition and less than 0.2 ppm total cyanide.

This circular outlines salient facts regarding the manganese-ore industry in the United States and the world. It is founded chiefly upon published information available in the literature of the subject. The Bureau of Mines has in its files additional, more detailed data upon many of the topics presented very briefly here, and will endeavor to assist the mineral industries and public by giving further information in response to individual inquiries. The Bureau will welcome comments, criticisms, and contributions of data that may assist in making later additions of this circular more accurate, or in developing more fully its mineral files pertaining to manganese. In reporting the production of manganese-bearing ores in the United States the following classification has been adopted by the Bureau of Mines: (1) Metallurgical-grade ores, under which have been classified manganese ores containing 35 percent or more of manganese used in the manufacture of iron and steel, ferruginous manganese ore containing 10 to 35 percent of manganese, manganiferous iron ore containing 5 to 10 percent of manganese, and manganiferous zinc residuum; (2) battery ore; (3) fluxing ores, under which are classified ores that may contain a few ounces of silver and are rich enough in manganese to make them valuable chiefly for fluxing purposes in nonferrous smelters; and (4) miscellaneous ores, under which are classified the ores shipped to brick manufacturers, glass makers, and manufacturers of manganese chemicals.

The thermochemistry of the systems SCN-H2O, Au-SCN-H2O and Ag-SCN-H2O is discussed. Potential-pH diagrams at 25°C are drawn for each system considering several sets of concentrations of the species involved. The information provided by the potential-pH diagrams is.complemented by distribution curves for each series of gold and silver complexes with thiocyanate. The analysis includes comparisons between the thiocyanate systems and the analogous cyanide systems, pointing out analogies and differences between the leaching of gold and silver with thiocyanate and with cyanide. The possibility of using soluble oxidizing agents such as ferric ions, hydrogen peroxide and Caro's acid is evaluated. The thermodynamic data used in the calculations and the chemical reactions represented in the Pourbaix diagrams are all reported in three Appendices. The overall results indicate the thermodynamic conditions for gold and silver leaching by thiocyanate.

A mass of circumstantial evidence is presented to indicate that the main source of alloy losses in open-hearth tapping is oxidation by air, with the steel apparently reacting with an amount of oxygen equivalent to about 30 times its own volume of air. The effect is erratic from heat to heat, depending largely on turbulence and distance of free fall of the stream of liquid metal. THIS paper reports another phase in a general study of oxidation in the open-hearth, various aspects of which have already been discussed in previous papers.1,2,3 It is based on experiments conducted on commercial, basic open-hearth furnaces at various times when opportunity offered, beginning about 1938, in an attempt to determine the mechanism and measure the amount of air oxidation during the flow of the tapping stream through the air into a ladle. This effect is closely connected, not only with alloy losses and control of chemical analysis, but possibly with various questions regarding inclusion content and steel quality and with a true picture of the deoxidation of steel in general. Thus it is believed that discussion of a large part of the results to date may be of assistance to others who are studying problems related to deoxidation or to steel cleanliness and quality. The literature reveals that strangely little attention has been devoted specifically to the effect of pouring steel through open air. Bardenheuer and Henke4 in 1939, in a paper devoted largely to overall losses of manganese in the basic open-hearth, reported that for a number of heats tapped into a tilted ladle held just beneath the runner so that the maximum distance of drop of the stream through the air was held to less than about 30 in., there was in most cases almost no loss of manganese from furnace to ladle. Hultgren,5 in 1945, showed that in high-carbon basic electric steel deoxidized in the furnace and containing no large inclusions as it left the furnace, large silicate inclusions, often rich in manganese oxide, were present in samples dipped from the pool in the ladle; also that the rise in content of large inclusions (above 0.01 mm dim) was greater when the metal stream was made to spray or flow in a turbulent manner. Our interest in this phase of oxidation in the open-hearth was first aroused by a study of alloy efficiencies on ladle additions. The frequency curves of manganese efficiency (net recovery of metal added in ladle) given in fig. 1 are of interest in this connection. Lowest, and also most variable (47 to 95 pct), recovery was in low-carbon heats having no coal additions to the ladle, progressing upward to a maximum average and least variable (82 to 97 pct) recovery in high-carbon heats killed with aluminum and silicon. Both coal additions and higher carbon contents in the tap stream, as well as additions of silicon and aluminum, help to lower the amount of manganese loss. But the most interesting point is the amount of manganese oxidized in many heats tapped at 0.50 to 1.06 pct carbon. It has been shown in a previous paper3 that the amount of oxygen in the tap stream in such heats is very small, usually below 0.01 pct, too small to oxidize any appreciable amount of manganese. Also, the fact that manganese should be oxidized at all in a metal solution containing such more stable oxide-forming elements as aluminum and silicon is an indication of some rather intense oxidizing effect such as could be caused by reaction with the air during ladle filling. This work investigated inhibition performance of copper carbonate (CuCO3), which is less toxic than conventional heavy-metal corrosion inhibitors in amine treating plants, The investigation was experimentally carried out in a bench-scale electrochemical corrosion cell under an atmospheric pressure, The inhibition performance of CuCO3 in an aqueous solution of monoethanolamine (MEA) was examined under a wide range of operating conditions and reported as a function of process parameters including inhibitor concentration, temperature and solution velocity, The results show that CuCO3 functions as an anodic inhibitor. One of the serious environmental problems related with the extraction of coal for carbon and energy resources is that upon preparation of coal a large quantity of fine coal has been discarded and/or lost to tailing impoundments. These problems present hazardous conditions to the local community. Also, the precious heating value of energy resources has been wasted and Left unrecovered in the tailing impoundments. Both RCR and SMRC ACTs recognize and mandate an investigation into slurry impoundment problems, including consideration of potential use of those coal fines in the tailing ponds. Bituminous coal producing district 46 encompasses the northern panhandle of West Virginia. The major producing seam in this district is the Pittsburgh coal, 1-7 meters thick. 75 percent of the coal producted in this district is deep mine. This district produces approximately 3 million tons of coal waste materials annually. One of the coal preparation plants in the district which we have visited has been processing Pittsburgh too. 8 seam coal for the past ten years. The characteristic data of the Pittsburgh raw coal is shown in Table 1. The raw coal produced in this district is characterized by its high heating value, high ash and high sulfur contents. The coal preparation plant flowsheet designed and used to process this Pittsburgh raw coal prior to 1979 is shown in Figure 1. It was a partial coal cleaning plant' with 1 092 mt/hr designed capacity, which consisted mainly of a coarse coal cleaning circuit. The rejected fine particles in the size range of -600µm which consisted of vorsiv underflow and cyclone underflow from clean coal streams and spiral classifier overflow from refuse stream were settled down in a thickener with the aid of anionic flocculant prior to being pumped to the tailing ponds for disposal. Figure 2 shows that the same coal preparation plant in Figure 1 was modified to a semi-complete coal cleaning plant and expanded its designed capacity to 1 820 mt/hr, when market of coal fines becomes feasible in 1979. Tabling in the clean coal circuit and thermal dryer in the dewatering circuit were added to the flow sheet. The purpose is to recover more coal fines, reduce more pyritic sulfur and ash contents in coal and also to reduce solid waste material to be stored into the slurry impoundment, giving them a Longer Life. The rejected fine particles fed to the thickener are clean coal fines from two cyclone overflows and the fine refuse from the rufuse cyclone overflow. The clean coal fines presently lost to the tailing impoundments are in the size range of -150 µm and constitute about 5 percent of the overall plant feed. Total amount of tailing waste material accumulated in a tailing impoundment is estimated at 1.3 million metricton for the past ten years.

Reverse combustion is one thermal method of recovering hydrocarbons from porous undergrortnd formations containing oil or tar. In applying this method, air is introduced via an injection well and the mixture of air and hydrocarbons is ignited in the production well. A combustion zone then recedes toward the injection well, counter-current to the air flow. If the combustion-zorie temperature is sufficiently high, the oil or tar irz place is distilled arid cracked. The hydrocnrhon flows as a vapor to the production well and subsequently is condensed at the surface. Maximum temperature and velocity of morcment arc the two dependent variubles defining the progress of the combustion zone. A theoretical analysis has been made of heat flow in the reverse-comhustion process as.srtrning linear flow in a homogeneous system. The differentirll equatious, which include the oxygen-hydrocar-hon rctrction rate, have been solved numerically. Rescllts indicate that the maximum temperature reached and he cornbustion-zone relocity both increase with an incrense in air-injection rote. Heat loss to surroundings has little effect on the maximum comhustion-zone ten?perature achieved, but it is reflected in a reduced com-bustion-zorzc, velocity. It is also predicted that an increase in the oxygen-hydrocarbon reaction rate results in a reduction in the maximum temperature reached. The calculated results are in agreement with results from reverse-combustion experinments using samples of a tar sand. INTRODUCTION Reverse combustion is one thermal method of recovering hydrocarbons from porous underground forma-tions containing oil or tar.' In applying this method, air is introduced into the underground formation via an in-jection well. In one or more adjacent production wells, the mixture of air and hydrocarbons is ignited at the sand face. The combustion zone thus formed recedes toward the injection well, counter-current to the air flow (Fig. 1). Under certain conditions, the rate of recession of the combustion zone is sufficiently rapid that only a small fraction of the hydrocarbon at any point in the formation is consumed by combustion. If the combustion-zone temperature is sufficiently high, the uncon-sumed oil or tar in place may be partially distilled or cracked. This material then can flow as a vapor with the gaseous combustion products to the production well and subsequently be condensed at the surface. Under other conditions, the combustion-zone temperature may be so low that little, if any, of the hydrocarbon is vaporized. Nevertheless, the viscosity of the hydrocarbon may be reduced enough so that other recovery methods subsequently can be applied to produce oil at attractive rates. The maximum temperature achieved in the combustion zone and the velocity of movement are the two dependent variables defining the progress of the combustion zone. Presumably. knowledge of these factors will permit estimates to be made of oil recovery efficiency, oil and gas producticn rates and average amount of injection air required per barrel of oil recovered. The maximum temperature and combustion-zone vclocity are, in turn, expected to be dependent upon air flow rate, heat losses to surrounding formations, physical properties of the rock and the hydrocarbon. the extent to which the porous formation is saturated with the hydrocarbon, the rate of oxidation of the hydrocarbon and the amount of heat released. It is desirable that the relative importance of each of these factors be understood so that the results of laboratory tests of oil recovery by reverse combustion can be properly interpreted in terms of expected field performance. In 1910 the United States Bureau of Mines was created. It was the outgrowth of a social problem stemming from the fact that 25,000 men were killed in coal mining accidents for the period 1900-1910. Something had to be done and congress responded to the people's demands by creation of this new regulatory agency. At that time mine operators felt the new agency was too strict but nonetheless new rules were developed and enforced and results were obtained by the industry which reduced fatal accidents to less than 250 per year by 1970.*Social reaction by the general public brought about legislation which created the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 This legislation was a direct reaction to the Farmington Disaster. Operators and miners alike said "we cannot operate under this law. It is too strict, requirements are unrealistic, production will suffer, .there will not be any improvement in health and safety, etc." Consider the facts: 1. Health and safety have improved. The 1972 frequency and severity rate was the best ever for the bituminous coal mining industry, Figure 1. 2 .Production per manshift has dropped in underground coal mines. For example, in West Virginia from near 16 tons/m.s. in 1967 to nearly 11 tons/m.s. in 1971-72. However, not all of this loss can be attributable to the Act, but certainly some is. (2) The betterment of the safety of coal mining was a prime motivation behind the coal law and from that standpoint the law has been partially successful, but the loss in productivity has been a real burden to the mine operator. Everyone should recognize that the law says little in regard to production--it only relates to health and safety. Production is management's responsibility.

Mining organisations grapple with the same problems year after year, wasting incredible amounts of time and money. According to estimates from the International Labour Organization (ILO), over one million work-related deaths occur annually, and hundreds of millions of workers suffer from workplace accidents and occupational exposure to hazardous substances worldwide. Many accident reports cite human failure as a primary cause (Busse and Johnson, 1998). The workers at the Bhopal chemical plant pumped methyl isocyanate into a leaking tank (Morehouse and Subramaniam, 1986). On 3 December 1984, more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, immediately killing at least 3800 people and causing significant morbidity and premature death for many thousands more. The company involved in what became the worst industrial accident in history immediately tried to dissociate itself from legal responsibility (Broughton, 2005). Australia is not spared from safety problems either (Lucas, 2022). The ILO Convention 176 (1995) as a response provides that national law should inter alia provide for the supervision of safety and health in mines; the inspection of mines by designated inspectors of the competent authority; the procedures for reporting and investigating of fatal and serious accidents; the compilation and publication of statistics on accidents, occupational diseases and dangerous occurrences; the competent authority to suspend or restrict mining activities on safety and health grounds until conditions giving rise to the suspension are addressed; and worker consultation on matters related to safety and health in mines. This has assisted in getting enough data to define the magnitude of the problem to the mining sector.

Iron ore is normally sold in bulk at certain specifications. These include iron grade and specific contaminant grades, typically silica, alumina, phosphorous and sulfur. These target grades are normally agreed between the mining company (producer) and the steelmaking company (customer).This study presents an alternative to traditional cut-off grade calculation, using linear programming that maximises the total ore inventories within a predefined mining envelope while meeting the specified targets. Providing a feasible mining sequence that maintains the target grade is not covered in this study.The method was applied to Fortescue’s operations. The complexity arising from differing ore quality within each mining horizon, variable yields and upgrades and the need to control iron and contaminant grades provided a good opportunity to test an alternative method of ore selection. The new method significantly reduced the time spent in cut-off selection and sensitivity analysis, and provided an optimised solution.CITATION:Aros, M and Reilly, L, 2014. Laboratory experiments have been performed to evaluate the kinetics of roasting pyrite and arsenopyrite in air at elevated temperatures, in the presence of lime. The effects of temperature, time, air flow rate, particle size, lime type, and mineral/lime weight ratio on the rates of oxidation, lime sulfation, and lime arsenation were studied. The reaction products were identified using chemical analysis, x-ray diffraction, SEM analysis, and optical microscopy. The results are discussed in terms of the utilization of lime to capture sulfur and arsenic during the roasting of refractory precious metal concentrates. More than 99.9% of the arsenic and 98% of the sulfur are contained when roasting pyrite and arsenopyrite with hydrated lime under typical roasting conditions.

"Testing of the NIOSH-designed roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) has gone through many iterations demonstrating successful dust control performance under controlled conditions. J.H. Fletcher & Co. (Fletcher), an original equipment manufacturer of mining equipment, has further developed the CAC concept by incorporating it into the design of its roof bolting machines. A new CAC design has been developed incorporating the results of testing of the NIOSH design and the recent Fletcher design. Observations from smoke testing conducted on this new CAC design in a laboratory setting show promise for improved performance. INTRODUCTION Exposure to respirable coal mine dust can cause coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) otherwise known as black lung. If silica is present in the dust, the miner may develop silicosis in addition to CWP. CWP and silicosis are occupational respiratory diseases that are ultimately fatal and have no cure. The only method of prevention is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit (on an MRE basis) for respirable coal mine dust is 2.0 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities [30 CFR 70.100 2015]. Recently enacted legislation changes this standard beginning in August 2016 to 1.5 mg/m3 for a full working shift [Federal Register, 2014]. If the respirable coal mine dust contains more than 5% silica, the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced; calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present [30 CFR 70.101] so that the effective exposure limit for respirable quartz is 0.1 mg/m3 for a full working shift. Sources of exposure to respirable coal mine dust for the roof bolting occupations include infrequent maintenance and cleaning of the vacuum dust collection system and operating the bolter downwind (in the return air) of the continuous miner [Goodman and Organiscak, 2003]. Recent studies have demonstrated that vacuum dust collection systems are effective in capturing bolter-generated dust, if maintained and operated correctly and if proper face ventilation techniques are used. However, most exposure to respirable coal mine dust for the roof bolter occurs when the roof bolter machine is operated downwind of the continuous miner [Potts et al., 2011; Colinet et al., 2013]. Because of this higher exposure downwind of the continuous miner, the roof bolter is generally limited to working downwind of the miner only once during a production shift"

"We have conducted analytical and technological evaluation of sepiolite containing clay. The possible areas of application of the sepiolite have been investigated and complex methods of enrichment of natural sepiolite have been identified. It was determined that for preserving the structure of minerals after processing the most effective method of the natural agglomerates disintegration was the soft abrasion of the clay fraction up to 0,5 mm. Disintegration of sepiolite clay along with using high energy-stressed effects on the matrix can deteriorate the rheological properties of clay suspensions and reduce the yield of drilling mud and sorption properties. To improve the quality of clay powders we used combined gravity-modifying method of wet enrichment. After the wet enrichment the yield of drilling mud increased up to 12.7 m3/t, with the addition of MgO up to 20,3 m3/t. It was noted that drilling muds contenting more than 50% of sepiolite are stable in mineralized (salt) waters. Based on the studied activated sepiolite rocks we obtained the effective heat-insulating materials with relatively low thermal conductivity – 0,165 W/m·K, average strength – 7,29 MPa and water absorption-49,0%.INTRODUCTION The modern development of the Russian economy requires the implementation of scientific and technical tasks. The solutions of it involves a radical reduction in energy, heat losses and material consumption of products, rational and efficient using of all types of resources, as well as the using of new types of mineral raw materials and materials based on it. An example of a new type of mineral raw materials for Russia is sepiolite containing rocks, due to unconventional conditions for their soils accumulation in the climate of the Far North. Sepiolite is a unique type of nonmetallic mineral. It is formed in soils, marine and saline basins, occurs in carbonate and carbonate-clay rocks in the form of lenses and lens – shaped layers, rarely nodules, loose powdery masses, shell-like concretions. Sepiolite may have a soft porous macroscopic appearance or less often the structure of the fibrous mass. Color of sepiolite is from white to cream with gray, green, pink and even crimson shade depending on the degree of pollution. Sepiolite can be in two forms - a-sepiolite (parasepiolite), which occurs in the form of large packets of crystalline fibers and ß-sepiolite, which occurs in the form of amorphous aggregates or small flat rounded particles. The sepiolite fibers have a length of from 0.2 to 2 Å, width from 100 to 300 Å, the thickness from 50 to 100 Å (Geological dictionary, 1973)."
