"Groundwater with elevated sulfate and metals was treated using a sulfate-reducing pilot PRB consisting of a series of six 55-gallon drums filled with ZVI (Fe0), wood chips, brewer’s grain, limestone, and emulsified vegetable oil (EVO). Sulfate was reduced from >3000 to <250 mg/L and Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn concentrations declined up to 3 orders of magnitude in 2 months. After 6 months of operation at a 7.5-day retention time, sulfate broke through. The system was then rejuvenated by injecting EVO in each drum and operated for 5 more months at a 9-day retention time. Sulfate-reducing bacteria in the pilot system grew by 3 to 4 orders of magnitude in 2 months. Some cementation of the PRB media was observed in the first 2 drums after processing 25 pore volumes of water, due to preferential upstream precipitation of sulfides; this can be avoided through operational modifications. Resulting permeability losses were estimated at 0.1% to 1% per year. Absorption/desorption was tested at bench scale to evaluate the use of various oil-soaked sorbents as a slow-release source of dissolved carbon. The tests show that oil sorbents can increase the useful life of a PRB between oil refills to over 100 pore volumes. INTRODUCTION High sulfate concentrations, low pH, and dissolved metal exceedances are common characteristics of mining-influenced water (MIW). Above-ground such MIW is commonly treated using biochemical reactors (BCR). In a BCR, water generally flows vertically downward through a layer of biomass, such as wood chips, manure, etc. The dissolved organics resulting from the decay of this material are oxidized first by microbes using oxygen; when oxygen is exhausted, other bacteria can use nitrate, and then sulfate to oxidize organics. In addition to directly analyzing the surfaces of minerals using high vacuum instrumentation methods, some important surface properties of mineral fillers can be determined indirectly by using reactive chemical probe molecules. This technique enables the strength and the number of the surface reactive sites to evaluation and this type of information is useful in predicting interfacial behaviour of minerals. One method of classifying these surface sites is by using Lewis acid/base theory and this type of approach could enable one to predict the adsorption of functional groups in dispersants, thickeners, pigments, etc. Also the adhesion of polymer matrices to the filler surface may be improved.

Estimated costs and revenues can be used in the evaluation of post- mining land use alternatives. However, post-mining land use decisions have to be made in an environment complicated by several additional factors. These factors, including cultural, natural, and managerial issues, are not as easily quantified as costs and revenues but may be more important determinants. There- fore, some approach is needed to attach relative weight to the various factors. The concept of fuzzy sets assembled into a structured hierarchy facilitates analysis of the relative value of individual factors and their impact upon each alternative under consideration. In this paper, a method is presented which employs fuzzy set analysis to evaluate postmining land use plans on the basis of these nonquantitative factors.

"Raman spectroscopy is used to quantify the extent of disorder in the carbonaceous matter associated with preg-robbing ores. Previous studies of Goldstrike ores showed that the height and width of the peaks for the “D” (disordered) and “G” (graphite) bands, the so-called “Raman ratio” had a strong correlation to the preg-robbing value (PRV) measured for various ore samples. A brief literature review on Raman spectroscopy as it applies to preg-robbing ores is presented. Further, recent studies, presented here, have shown no correlation between the Raman ratio and the PRV for a wide variety of ores. This suggests that the extent of organic carbon crystal disorder is not the main factor in determining preg-robbing characteristics.INTRODUCTION Valuable base metals, such as nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium and tungsten, are used in a wide range of important technological applications. The demand for many of these metals has increased significantly over the last few decades, driven especially by economic expansion in Asia generally and China in particular. This has led in turn to a large growth in the output of mines in order to satisfy this increasing demand, as shown by the data in Table 1 (USGS, 1994, 2014). These data reflect an even longer trend of growth of these metals, with nickel, for example, showing an average rate of 5.3% per year from 1980 until 2015 (International Nickel Study Group, 2017). This rapid and sustained rate of growth means that annual mine outputs for nickel, tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium have had to double roughly every 11 to 14 years, whilst cobalt mine output has had to double roughly every 7 years, over the period from 1994 until 2014. With the average working life of a nickel mine being between 17 and 22 years (Statista, 2017), this means that from the time a nickel mine opens until it closes, the industry needs to find the equivalent of another three or four mines of a similar output to satisfy this relentless growth in demand for the metal."

As part of a study of application of the Buckley-Leverett method to an analysis of oil-reservoir performance covering a wide range of relative permeabilities and oil saturations, a method has been devised for quickly deter-mining average water saturation at breakthrough from relative permeability data. The base for the relative permeability used in the report is either the permeability to air or the effective permeability to oil at the irreducible water saturation. The permeability to air also was used because of the large backlog of air permeabilities available to reservoir engineers. The basic data were calculated by an electronic computer and are presented in a single graph from which the point of breakthrough may be obtained. In this study the water saturation at the beginning of the depletion is the connate or interstitial or irreducible water saturation. These water saturations are considered to be synonymous and to have a practical value.

THE third year of Government exploration for potash by the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines under the authorization of the act approved June 25, 1926 (Public 424-69th Cong.) is drawing to a close. The results thus far obtained are thought to be sufficiently interesting and satisfactory to justify the presentation of a brief pre¬liminary account of the work. REVIEW OF EARLIER EXPLORATION The general geologic similarity of the Permian basin of Texas and New Mexico to the potash field of Germany had long ago suggested the possibility of the presence of potash salts somewhere in that basin, but petroleum exploration was then making little headway there and the necessary data could not be obtained. The discovery by Udden in 1912 of potash in brine from the Spur well in Dickens County, Texas, was the first direct evidence of its presence. In 1915-17 the U. S. Geological Survey drilled a test well with standard tools at Cliffside near Amarillo, but failed to find potash. Nevertheless, an observer has been kept in the field, at first in cooperation with the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology but since 1922 by the Survey alone, to secure data and samples from oil and gas tests. Since the discovery of oil in Reagan County in 1923 exploration by drilling has been rapidly extended to many parts of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The identification of the potash-bearing mineral polyhalite was first announced by the Geological Survey in June, 1921, the material having come from cuttings from the Bryant well in Midland County and the Burns well in Dawson County, Texas. Successive discoveries and announcements of similar purport aroused widespread interest in potash exploration, which culminated in the action by Congress already noted.

Enterprise Mine at Mount Isa is to expand ore production from the current 1.4 to 3.5 mtpa by mining the 3500 Orebody, from which production is scheduled to start in February 1998 making this the deepest underground mine in Australia with its lowest mining horizon at nearly 1.6 km below surface. The following fill requirements were defined for the 3500 Orebody during the feasibility study: 1. a minimum filling rate of 250 ma/h, 2. a curing time of 28 days, and 3. minimum free fill water. This paper mainly describes the investigation of high density and paste fills for the 3500 Orebody. The investigation covered all the key issues relating to fill option selection, including design criteria, material supply and demand assessment, drainage modelling, tailing dewatering method, mix design and a pump loop test. Results of the investigation indicate that both high density fill and paste fill are technically feasible. The investigation has led to the selection of a blended tailing paste for the 3500 Orebody as the paste option has significant advantages over high density fill in stope filling rates and fill reticulation. The blended tailing for paste fill is finer than Isa deslimed tailing but coarser than full plant tailing. The paste fill selected has minimum binder and tailing dewatering requirements while a relatively high filling rate is achieved.

THIs old and once famous district played, through its enormous production of silver and gold, an important part in the history of the State of San Luis Potosi. According to a pamphlet prepared under the direction of the Governor of the State, Sr. Don Blas Escontria, and presented to the visiting members of the Institute during the Mexican meeting of 1901, this district is situated 20 km. east of the city of San Luis Potosi, in a range of mountains of moderate height, extending 135 km. N. and S., and 16 km. E. and W.; and the mineralized area hitherto developed is about 600,000 sq. m. The history of the district, as given by the record dated 1778, and formerly kept in the Sail Francisco convent, says that it was discovered in 1575 by Sr. Don Pedro Irarte, and adds that the city of San Luis Rey de Francisco de1 Potosi received its name (in allusion to the famous Potosi mines in Bolivia) by reason of the remarkable productiveness of its gold- and silver-mines in the first period of their exploration, during which they paid to the Crown, as quintos (the fifth part of the product), $97,000,000, as appears from the accounts of the royal treasury. The amount of the quintos paid during the " bonanza period " of 80 years was $72,000,000. The larger sum first mentioned probably represents a longer series of years. But either will suffice to indicate the great wealth of the mines. In 1663, the decadence of the industry began with the caving-in of several mines, concerning which the record of 1778, already cited, says, in substance, that on Good Friday one of the owners in the enterprise, in view of the unfavorable prospect of a lawsuit in which he was engaged, set fire to the timbers supporting the underground galleries and workings of the Sail

A few days ago, while reading a report of the late Dr. Robert Bell in preparation for this afternoon&apos;s meeting, I found some impressive figures concerning the magnitude of the Hudson Bay basin. From the waters of the Bay itself, this great territory extends eastward 500 miles, westward l,300 miles to the Rocky mountains, and southward to the source of the Red river. It has a width of 2,100 miles from east to west, and a length of l,500 miles from north to south. Its area is almost three million square miles. It is not, of course, my intention to review the natural resources of this vast territory, but to confine my remarks to that portion of it adjacent to the waters of Hudson bay. A number of erroneous ideas exist in the minds of many concerning this northern country, especially as regards its latitude and climate. Burwell, at the entrance of Hudson strait, is in the latitude of 60 degrees or roughly that of the north of Scotland. The southern end of James bay has about the same latitude as the northern end of Vancouver .island.

Lead is an ancient metal. The alchemists related it to the planet Saturn. It was largely obtained by smelting galena which generally contains small quantities of silver. That is why the metallurgy of lead was closely related to that of silver and in some cases the ore was treated only for its silver content. It was also known during the Roman time that lead vapors were toxic. Lead has been produced exclusively by pryrometallurgical methods. Lead refining is a complex process because of the presence of deleterious impurities such as arsenic, antimony, and bismuth. In the nineteenth century lead played an important role as a material of construction in the manufacture of sulfuric acid. In the twentieth century tetraethyl lead was used exclusively as an anti-knock reagent. In recent years lead is mainly used for making batteries.

The complexity of metallurgical processes in the non-ferrous metals industry. especially changes in the process conditions in combination with a diversity of metal processing furnaces, requires a precise knowledge of the system for the selection of refractory products. However, particular importance is still focused on the specific refractory consumption being as low as possible. The addition of recycling material with a high amount of impurities and the increase of low-grade ore concentrates used in the base-metals industry also entails a significant change of slag chemistries, process temperatures, etc., which influence the performance of already approved linings. This acknowledgement of process changes with decreased brick lifetimes provided the motivation for RHI AG to develop high-performance refractory bricks especially for non-ferrous metals applications. The internal laboratory tests with fayalitic slag showed very promising results compared with our approved magnesia-chromite bricks for this application. In order to identify suitable refractory products and to improve the life of the refractory lining, innovative product development has to be undertaken. In addition, the practical corrosion testing methods and facilities available within the RHI Technology Center, such as the induction furnace and the rotary kiln test equipment, allows the best possible understanding of brick wear at a laboratory scale. Based on the results of the test work, the optimal refractory solution can be recommended for a field trial at the customer?s site.

AT Kellogg, Idaho, J. Fred Johnson is driving the 5000.-ft Hooper Tunnel under contract for the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining Co. This was visited by a group of engineers during the recent meeting of the A. I. M. E. at Spokane, who were impressed with several features of the work. An excellent record of advance is being made by the contractor, over 47 ft. being driven in 3 days during October, and 223 ft. advanced in 29 shifts. The size of the tunnel is 8 by 9 ft. The ground is Wallace quartzite and, save for the first hundred feet, stands well and does not require timbering. The grade is held uniformly at 0.5 per cent. Two shifts are employed, with two sets of machine men to the shift. Ingersoll-Rand S-70 drills are used. each machine being set up independently in the heading; 26-30 holes are drilled to the round; using 1 1/4: in. round hollow drill steel. A 7-hole cut is required, and these holes are blasted simultaneously, using 60 per cent gelatine, 12 sticks to the hole. Instantaneous and fire delays of electric detonators are used for the complete round. A feature of the drilling is the use of long carriage drills, necessitating fewer changes of steel, and more time spent on drilling, with less time consumed taking steel back and forth from the face. Of course, this means better blacksmithing so that the drill steel shall stand up for the added footage.

Filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities offer many advantages over thickened tailing storage facilities and yet, most of the mining companies still prefer the latter.Some of the advantages of filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities are: increased structural integrity of the tailing storage facility, which is even more critical in areas of high seismicity, close to nearby communities or environmentally sensitive areas; maximised water recovery which is particularly important in arid environments where water is an extremely valuable resource and its supply is regulated; optimised recovery of valuable metals in the process water, avoiding high cyanide concentration going to detoxification (both aspects haven’t been emphasised enough in technical papers on this subject); optimised space to store the tailings in mountainous regions; minimised elevation of embankment height, providing a safe option to store the tailings in places where there is limited area available; simplified license approval to operate where the tailing facility is a big issue; and avoidance of potential problems with nearby communities.Filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities have some disadvantages such as: technology limitations in operations that process high throughputs (eg &gt;50 000 tpd) as they require many filters resulting in high maintenance and operating costs; higher capital cost; low efficiency in the filtration process, particularly in ores with high clay content increasing operating problems and capital cost; the new technology risk with possible debottlenecking issues and a longer time to achieve the design throughput; and the need to treat larger water flow rates when the water balance is negative.This paper analyses: the operating practices of Mexican gold and silver operations using filtered dry stacking storage facilities; implementation issues, advantages and disadvantages; quantifiable reductions in gold and silver losses and actual lower detoxification cost; and current trends to use filtered dry stacking storage facilities in new projects. One of the main issues regarding the use of charcoal in metallurgical processes is its mechanical strength, which is much lower than coke. There is no defined standard to determine charcoal compression strength, and the methods described in the literature consist in using a prepared specimen and applying compressing load in the same direction of the charcoal fibres. As charcoal is highly anisotropic, it is proposed a procedure that does not use a specimen and with load applied on a specific direction. Instead, it intends to simulate industrial conditions by randomly dumping charcoal inside a tube, without preferential directional arrangement. This is an attempt to determine charcoal mechanical strength and predict the behaviour of bulk charcoal under a static load, as in a blast furnace. Experiments with controlled loads have been carried out on randomly distributed bulk charcoal with controlled initial size and their effect on the size distribution has been analysed. After compression, charcoal is screened and each size is weighed, determining the particle size distribution of the experiment. This method can therefore be used to evaluate charcoal mechanical strength.

Since the introduction of mechanical mining, some 35 years ago, a great deal of effort has been expended by the coal industry to solve the coal dust problem. The original concern was the possibility of a dust explosion or the propagation of a gas ignition; however, in recent years it has come to be recognized as a possible &apos;health hazard as well. In the middle thirties, the Pittsburgh Coal Company began an intensive study of the dust problem to determine the dust levels created by the various cycles of operation in mechanical mining and to make a comparison with those of hand loading operations. Numerous dust samples were collected with a midget impinger and it was found that dust counts varied from 38 to 268 million particles per cubic foot during hand loading and from 96 to 227 million particles per cubic foot during mechanical loading. The study indicated that the source of underground dust in coal mining could be classified as primary or secondary. A primary source is one associated with appreciable degradation of size, that is, where most of the fines capable of becoming air-borne are produced. A secondary source is one in which most of the fines have been produced at some previous operation and are in such condition that they can become air-borne. Cutting, drilling and blasting are the operations which produce the primary dust. Secondary dust is formed by operations which include; loading, transportation and discharge at transfer points. The study showed clearly that the coal cutting operation was responsible for the greatest amount of dust and that the amount of dust produced varied directly with the speed of cutting; type and dullness of cutting bits; and the distance the cuttings had to fall to the floor. The information obtained from the study enabled our company to decide on a course of action and the direction to follow. With the cooperation of mining machine manufacturers, water tanks with a 200 gallon capacity were built into the machine trucks and were provided with a pump driven by a small motor. A length of 1/2" water hose carried the water from the pump to the two water spray nozzles located at the front of the machine. Water was delivered to the machine tanks by water cars which were filled on the surface or from an underground water supply. It was during these early days that wetting agents were introduced into the water system. Our studies revealed that wetting agents did little better than plain water in the abatement of the dust problem. It was found that when using a wetting agent less water was required to obtain the same results but we could not take advantage of this fact because it was almost impossible to keep the smaller nozzles open to reduce the amount of water being used.
