THE application of the integrated intensity X-ray diffraction method to the measurement of retained austenite concentrations in hardened steels has been fully described.'-' In developing this particular method, the assumption was made that the samples used would have flat surfaces which were free from voids and in which austenite was homogeneously distributed. The original calculation procedure' was modified to include the constant factor G which relates the intensity of a given diffraction line to the concentration of the component giving rise to that line. In order to include A (0) in the constant factor G, it was further assumed that the geometrical conditions relating the X-ray beam, camera cylinder, and sample surface were precisely met.V has been demonstrated that these geometrical conditions can be met experimentally without difficulty in many cases;' however, for those samples which have irregular surfaces or where it is impossible to locate the sample in the proper position with respect to the X-ray beam and film cylinder, it is desirable to evaluate experimentally what effect these nonideal conditions have on the reliability of the austenite determination. This note decribes the results of such experiments. SAE 1095 bar stock was used throughout and all samples were heat-treated as follows: 1600°F for 1 hr in a neutral atmosphere, brine quench, and 300°F temper for 30 min. To control heat-treatment conditions as closely as possible, all samples were plated with 0.002 in. copper to protect the immediate surface from the heat-treating atmosphere. After heat treating, the samples were deplated electroly-tically so that only the copper was removed. The heat-treated surfaces thus obtained were nearly as bright and polished as the original surfaces before copper plating although no mechanical work was done on the samples after heat treating.

The Para-Eco Incinerator Ash Processing System for cleaning slag has been developed after a seven-year pilot plant study. The major part of the system is an electric furnace heated to 1773 K. The feed material consists of a municipal solid waste incinerator ash mixture containing a reducing agent of a coke and an inorganic flux of calcium and magnesium. With this furnace system, three kinds of products are produced. They are an inorganic molten salt that is slag, molten iron alloy absorbing non-ferrous metals, and fly ash. Due to the reducing atmosphere in the furnace, the slag does not contain any metal components as well as chlorine components just like natural rock and/or aggregate. A retreatment plant modifies this slag into a practically useful aggregate. The plant consists of a slow cooling step for crystallizing the slag as well as a water granulation step. The iron components in the ash are reduced to molten iron droplets, which concentrate at the furnace bottom. The non-ferrous metal components such as copper, chromium, and others are absorbed into the molten iron but not into the molten slag. Volatile metals such as lead, zinc, cadmium and others as well as sodium, potassium, and chlorine go back into the fly ash. A solvent extraction method and/or other appropriate procedures can be used to extract the metal components from this fly ash.

Dentro das refinarias os tanques de armazenamento desempenham um papel fundamental, pois armazenam matéria prima para abastecimento das unidades, produtos intermediários entre os processos e produtos finais para distribuição. O presente trabalho apresenta de modo comparativo as características mecânicas e microestruturais da zona termicamente afetada de juntas soldadas formadas pelos processos de soldagem com Arame Tubular (FCAW) e Eletrodo Revestido (SMAW) aplicados na fabricação e reparo de tanques de armazenamento utilizados na indústria de petróleo. Os procedimentos de soldagem para cada junta soldada seguiram EPS (Especificação do Procedimento de Soldagem) utilizada por uma empresa que fabrica e repara tanques de armazenamento para indústrias de petróleo. O metal de base utilizado foi o aço estrutural de classificação ASTM A-36 em geometria plana e com chanfro tipo K. A solda foi multipasses de topo na posição horizontal (2G). Para realização deste estudo foram realizados quatro tipos de ensaios destrutivos: tração, microdureza Vickers, impacto Charpy e metalográfia. Os resultados indicaram a importância da seleção do processo de soldagem em termos de produção e formação da junta soldada e uma heterogeneidade devido as diferentes microestruturas presentes nas zonas termicamente afetadas que demostraram grande influência no perfil de microdureza.

The Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB) now commands 30% of the US utility, coal market due to the region&apos;s low mine production costs, competitive rail rates and low sulfur content. In 1997, production exceeded 240 Mt (265 million st). This was an in¬crease of 104 Mt (115 million st) since 1989 and 4.5 Mt (5 million st) above 1996. Continued growth is expected as the second phase of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) approaches. This growth will be the greatest in the southern part of the Basin where coal quality is higher. Coal characteristics SPRB coal is classified as subbituminous due to its low heating value and high moisture content. The coal is characterized by low sulfur and ash contents, low ash fusion temperatures and high reactivities. In 1997, the average heating content was 8,593 Btu/lb, with an average sulfur and ash content of 0.79 lbs S02/million [ ] Btu and 5.13%, respectively. The distinguishing characteristic of SPRB coal is its low sulfur content. Most SPRB coal contains less than 1.2 lbs S02/million Btu. This is the approximate definition of "compliance" coal for Phase II of the CA AA. Much of the coal, particularly in the southern part of the Basin, is referred to as "super-compliance" coal due to SO2 contents of between 0.4 and 0.7 lbs SO2/million Btu. The SPRB is divided into three geographic clusters based on coal quality. "Automatic identification and characterisation of mineral raw materials and beneficiated products are of major importance in mineral processing. However, minerals show great variety in their composition and physical and chemical properties. Industrial minerals may contain the same elements in about the same amount. In these cases backscatter electron imaging or chemical analysis are not sufficient to identify the minerals. Another problem arises when micro textures are not detectable in traditional imaging or the grain size is smaller than the X-ray spatial resolution.As a supplementary technique in these cases, application of crystallographic information by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) may be a suitable method. By means of EBSD, diagnostic mineral information can be achieved if indexible patterns are provided.Until now EBSD has not been used frequently on geological samples for mineral and micro structure discrimination.The technique has been demonstrated on three Norwegian mineral raw materials and one Italian marble and shows that it has some advantages compared to traditional techniques."

Suite aux excellents résultats, obtenus avec la technologie des détonateurs électroniques dans des chantiers longs trous de grandes dimensions, nous avons décidé d?étendre cette technologie dans les ouvertures, dans le dynamitage de piliers et dans différents chantiers complexes. Cette technologie nous a permis d?effectuer l?abatage de chantiers avec un très grand nombre de trous sans détériorer le terrain. L?équation est bien simple avec les détonateurs électroniques, plus gros sont les dynamitages moins de fois les épontes se font ébranler, moins de blocs d?effondrement se retrouvent dans les points de soutirages entre les dynamitages et plus la fragmentation est meilleure. La flexibilité d?opération que nous avons obtenu avec les détonateurs électroniques est difficilement quantifiable, mais elle nous a permis de maintenir notre rythme de production mensuelle même avec certains chantiers complexes. Il est bien certain que l?utilisation des détonateurs conventionnels a encore sa place dans une mine conventionnelle comme Beaufor, mais l?utilisation des détonateurs électroniques a aussi sa place dans certaines situations spéciales. Pour terminer, bien que la technologie des détonateurs électroniques soit encore dispendieuse, nous pensons encore l?utiliser pour optimiser certains dynamitages et ainsi maintenir notre flexibilité d?opération.

SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators possess excellent mineral processing ability and have been widely applied to process oxidised iron ores. SLon centrifugal separators are applied to clean the SLon magnetic concentrate and remove quartz and other gangue minerals associated with a small portion of magnetite.This paper introduces the application of this technology in Hai Nan, Da Hong Shan and An Shan for processing oxidised iron ores.

The Young America lead-silver-zinc mine in Stevens County, Wash., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines during parts of 1946, 1947, and 1948. Results of the investigation are described herein. The mine is 1/4 mile northeast of Bossburg, Wash., the nearest railway station. An excellent paved highway (No. 22) connects Bossburg with Colville, Wash., 23 miles to the south. The property was located in October 1885. It is credited with a production of 2,178 tons of shipping ore since 1901. The shipping ore averaged 7 percent lead, 7.7 percent zinc, and 16.1 ounces silver per ton. The property is under lease and option to Walter E. Morris and Perry Leighton of Colville, Wash. The deposit crops out on a steep limestone bluff overlooking the Columbia River. The country rock is a highly metamorphosed, brecciated, marbleized limestone (Northport formation).

High carbon, low phosphorus steel can now be made from pig iron containing 0.7 pct P or more, in a commercial sized open hearth furnace. No external heat is required for refining, and steel produced is identical with basic open hearth steel. THE classical Thomas process, which requires liquid pig iron containing over 11/2 pct P, yields a product relatively high in phosphorzs and nitrogen. Unless large quantities of recarburizers are added to the refined steel, the product is low in carbon content. Thus, the Thomas process is not well suited to American raw materials, and its product is often not acceptable according to the standards set by American industry. The shortcomings of the Thomas process have long been recognized; with the advent of low cost oxygen, studies were initiated to develop pneumatic processes which would conceivably overcome the inherent objections to Thomas steelmaking. Several such modified basic pneumatic processes have been tested experimentally in commercial trials during the past decade. Probably the most widely publicized of these developments has been the oxygen converter process as practiced in Austrial,2 and in Canada.8 n this process, oxygen is substituted for air and introduced above the liquid bath in order to increase the heat available to the metallurgical system. This avoids the need for high phosphorus raw materials and gives a product low in nitrogen. In this process, the phosphorus content in the final product depends, to a considerable extent, on the total amount of that element in the burden. The rotary furnace4 which is now in commercial operation at Domnarvet Steelworks, Sweden, is producing low phosphorus steel from iron containing 1.8 to 2 pct P. One or more early slags are removed and by this means high carbon steels of open hearth quality can be produced. At this stage of development there is some question as to the applicability of the rotary process to large heats. Another development has been the use of oxygen in combination with either steam6 or carbon dioxide yn the basic bessemer, thus avoiding the introduction of nitrogen gas into the refining system and giving a product relatively low in nitrogen content. A double slag process has been used in Europe7 in conjunction with a regular Thomas converter, by means of which it is possible to obtain a phosphorus content in the product approaching that obtained in basic open hearth steels. The Turbo-Hearth process:&apos; which uses the side blowing principle so as to produce low nitrogen steel from normal American pig irons, has been developed experimentally in this country. A process fitted to U. S. raw materials All of the preceding processes, with the exception of the rotary furnace, suffer from the common shortcoming that they cannot be adapted to the production of high-carbon, low-phosphorus steels unless large proportions of recarburizers are added. In 1947, a program was initiated by the Inland Steel Company1&apos; to study an oxygen steelmaking process specifically designed to utilize the full range of phosphorus analyses encountered in American pig irons and to give finai products with phosphorus and nitrogen contents comparable to steel produced by the basic open hearth process. "INTRODUCTION The Congress theme ""Improvement of Mine Productivity and Overall Economics by Modern Technology"" is probably beat: addressed by the subtheme allocated to this Plenary Session. It is appropriate that .Theme 1 emphasizes the simple point that effective use of geotechnical information is the key to improving mine productivity. In essence, this means that: (1) geological and geomechanics, (rock mechanics) data must be collected in sufficient quantity and of high quality; (ii) data interpretation must be performed specifically for purposes of engineering design; (iii) innovative design approaches should be used to bring about Improvements in productivity and safety.While, each of these three aspects .may: seem obvious to any mining engineer it is a fact that the above sequence is seldom followed and as a result, mining engineering not infrequently lags, behind other branches of engineering when it comes to design creativity, efficiency and safety.. . After all, mining is still-one of the most hazardous occupations and we are gathered here to discuss, at the highest world professional forum, how to use more effectively the modern technology. This however, does not mean that mining engineers are less capable than other engineers or that their achievements are any lesser; far from it! Mining engineers are the cream of the engineering society on whose efforts depends the welfare of mankind. Moreover, they have produced minerals and coal evergrowing quantities against evergrowing difficulties. Yet, we must and can become even better because we are not making full use of the modern technology and rock mechanics knowledge already at our disposal, and. we are not being innovative enough to the full extent of .our capabilities."

Single crystal solidification of turbine blades is a key technology for the production of reliable and high efficiency gas turbines. The solidification process of single crystal investment castings causes a number of problems that have to be solved such as the increase of casting defects and complexity of production process. Computer modeling and simulation is helpful to predict the defects and improve the process design. In the paper, a mathematical model for three dimensional simulation of solidification and single crystal growth of investment castings was developed based on CA, mechanism of crystal growth and basic transfer equations such as heat, mass transfer equations. Many factors including constitutional undercooling, curvature undercooling and anisotropy, which had vital influences on microstructure evolution, were considered in the model. Temperature, crystal growth interface and structure defects of investment castings of single crystal superalloy were investigated at withdrawal rates of 4.5mm/min and 7mm/min. Simulated results showed that microstructure evolution and structure defects were predicted reasonably and calculated results were coincident with experimental ones. The study indicated that three dimensional solidification simulation technique is a powerful tool for understanding the fundamental of solidification and the formation of structure defects in single crystal investment castings and finally for optimizing process design.

"Lifting riser in deep-seabed mining (DSM) is exposed to acute and chronic stresses of materials, whose yield will result in the most critical loss of total mining system. For freehanging riser (FHR), the axial vibration and local bending of riser may produce acute stresses, in the meanwhile, vortex-induced vibration (VIV) in relative current, friction and collisions of solid particles with inner-wall, and material corrosion in seawater are representative causes of chronic stresses. The chronical stresses bring about fatigue failure or abrupt failure by material loss. Hydraulic lifting is effective and promising for transportation of minerals, however, ecofriendly treatment of operating seawater is an unease hurdle to come over. Sizing of riser section confronts multi-directional problems, i.e. safety of slurry transportation (flow assurance), material safety of riser (wall thickness), seawater treatment on board, etc.A free-standing riser (FSR) might exclude a part of design problems of free-hanging riser and give a way to sustainable mining. FSR stands vertically by means of sub-buoyancy part(s). The top of FSR emerges above sea surface and is connected with mining platform through jumper line (supported by external yoke). Total amount of sub-buoyancy and location(s) have to be carefully determined in viewpoints of dynamics of FSI (fluidstructure interaction) in waves and currents. The concept of FSR gives more freedom for design of multi-functional riser system in view of sustainability of DSM. In DSM, sustainability concept may be focused on eco-friendly treatment of seawater and sediment, and safety of total mining system. For feasibility of FSR, however, installation, maintenance and repair need to be investigated thoroughly in collaboration with industry experts"

A close look at the Loyalhanna Limestone of southwestern Pennsylvania reveals a complex structural environment. Most exposures of the Loyalhanna occur along Chestnut Ridge and Laurel Hill within the Allegheny Mountain Section of the Appalachian Plateaus Province. Because the Loyalhanna is rated as a super pavement aggregate by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and because of its proximity to the population centers of southwestern Pennsylvania, the Loyalhanna has been extensively mined along these prominent anticlinal structures. Geologic and engineering analyses were performed using gas well and core logs, outcrop examinations, underground observations, and mine maps. Strata exposures from both outcrops and quarries were used to construct geologic maps, stereonet, and rose diagram projections so that the Loyalhanna&apos;s structural environment could be understood better. Many of these structural conditions cause ground control problems at local quarries. These problems ranged from small-to-moderate sized rock falls associated with roof jointing to pillar failures associated with dipping discontinuities. Stresses ranged from tensional on structural domes where weathering dominates, to high levels of compression within structural saddles. A greater understanding of these characteristics is a prerequisite to develop engineering controls, such as improved mine layouts. pillar sizes, etc., that lessen miner exposure to these hazards.

A RAPID glance over the history of The Mining Society of Nova Scotia shows that in its fifty years of service, which it is now rounding out, the Society has had an honourable career, rendered signal service to the mining industry of the Province, and helped to shape and improve legislation bearing on our mines and minerals, besicles publishing very many excellent papers and subsequent discussions thereon dealing with all subjects in its field of activity. THE GOLD MINERS? CLUB OF NOVA SCOTIA: The Society has the distinction of being generally regarded as the oldest mining fraternity in Canada ( 1). Iris the direct outgrowth or reorganization of The Gold Miners&apos; Club of Nova Scotia, which was organized in March, 1887, at a period when the gold mining industry was very prominent in the Province. Mr. Geo. W. Stuart, who, in 1934, was the only living member of the parent association, informed me that the seventeen Charter Members of The Gold Miners&apos; Club were John H. Anderson, Charles F. Andrews, A. B. Cox, Clarence H. Dimock, George E. Francklyn, L. W. Getchell, John E. Hardman, Alonzo A. Hayward, Major R. G. Leckie, W. L. Libbey, Edward M. McDonald, G. F. McNaughton, George A. Pyke, H. A. Sanders, C. E. Willis, Benjamin C. Wilson, and George W. Stuart. Others joined later in the same year.

Coal mining today is confronted with numerous problems, all of which affect in some way the ability of the operator to produce profitably. The major endeavor, therefore, is a quest for cost lowering techniques. Complete belt haulage from shuttle car to river barge appeared to be a step in such a direction. A deep look into all aspects proved this to be more involved than just the installation of such a belt line. With this paper, we will attempt to present to you the problems and requirements of design and installation of an all-belt haulage system, believed to be the longest underground belt installation in the world at this time. The first and most important item is the justification of an all-belt haulage system. The following is a brief history of the coal property and the facts affecting our decision.

The natural hydrophobic response flotation method for beneficiation of printed circuit board comminution fines (PCB CF) still requires many studies to further basic understanding of the process and the flotation traits that the PCB CF presents. Varying particle size distribution (PSD) and water recovery under the scheme show that higher mass pull, obtained at the finer PSD, gave lower water recovery but higher value loss. The reverse also holds: the least mass pull at the coarsest PSD used, -106 + 75 µm, gave the highest water recovery per unit mass pull with the highest reverse recovery. This is unlike what obtains in primary resources processing, where higher water recovery is often with increased fines entrainment. The reverse recovery loss here is, therefore, more due to entrapment with the heavy mass pull characteristic of the method than to the entrainment of value with water. Other peculiarities of the system observed are discussed, with the goal of improving the performance of the process, and broadening the general knowledge of flotation systems.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fifth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in Volume I. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion of that area.

"Rapid population growth and scarcity of space have led many developed cities to bury supply facilities. In line with this, utility tunnels have been employed in Korea since the 1970s. However, approximately 70% of structures were installed more than 20 years ago, in response to the issue of ageing, tunnel enlargement has been proposed. The aim of this study is to investigate geo-mechanical behavior due to tunnel enlargement. Tunnel enlargement methods have been researched to suggest a optimal method. A finite element analysis is conducted to evaluate ground behavior by the expansion of internal space. Vertical displacement and settlement trough width are investigated according to ground stiffness and different enlargement size. It was determined that displacement is affected by the enlargement size and ground stiffness. Based on the deformation results obtained from the numerical analysis, it is possible to predict ground behavior and stability upon tunnel enlargement. INTRODUCTION Various infrastructures such as electric lines, communication lines, gas pipes, and water pipes are jointly accommodated by utility tunnels. These utility tunnels improve the aesthetics of urban areas and help ensure stable supply. The first utility tunnel in Korea was adopted in 1978 and new tunnels are still being installed with the development of new suburb cities. Nevertheless, about 70% of the utility tunnels were installed over 20 years ago and they are still being used through ongoing repair. Moreover, 90% of utility tunnels were installed before 1995. With aging of the nation’s utility tunnels various problems such as concrete deterioration and scarcity of capacity have arisen. As solution, reconstruction has been considered. Reconstruction can enlarge space and improve the performance by replacing existing structures. For reconstruction, two routes have been proposed: underground excavation and cut and cover. In order to avoid traffic problems caused by road occupation and civil appeals during construction projects, underground excavation is the more attractive option. Tunnel enlargement methods have been classified (Seo et al., 2008; An et al 2013) and major considerations during tunnel enlargement have been outlined (Beak et al., 2007). Enlargement construction cases on road tunnels around the world were introduced (Kim et al., 2012) and the deformation curve during tunnel expansion was proposed to investigate the range of protection that should be offered (Kim et al., 2008; Beak et al., 2011). However, tunnel enlargement technology is limited to road tunnels and railway tunnels. Hence, a study on shallow box tunnel enlargement is required for practical application."
