The paper describes of the JORC Code in terms its background working environment and reasons for success, and provides references to papers which cover the subject in more detail. It then discusses the two major developments in Australasian reporting standards in the last two years: the revision of the 1999 Code, and the introduction in early 2003 of the “ROPO” (Recognised Overseas Professional Organisation) initiative. The purpose of the JORC Code is to provide a minimum standard for reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves in Australasia, and to ensure that public reports on these matters contain all the information which investors and their advisers would reasonably require for the purpose of making a balanced judgement regarding the results and estimates being reported.

The face of mining as we know is changing as mining companies all over the globe realize the reality of accessing the vast mineral wealth contained on, and under, our ocean floors. With some land based mineral deposits being fully exploited across the world, deep sea mining is set to revolutionize global approaches to the search for precious metals and other sought after minerals. Previously, the financial and technological implications of deep sea mining outweighed the benefits of access to the mineral rich deposits identified all around the world. The process of marine diamond mining off the west coast of southern Africa started in the late 1950s, and subsequently continued by De Beers to the present day, has proven to be an excellent proving ground for the development of technology and mining systems that ensure a sustainable and financially viable business.

Coal mine ventilation systems are often subject to high leakage rates. As a result, changes in airflow resistance will strongly affect the efficiency with which air is delivered to the working place. One major source of airflow resistance is the line brattice used to direct air from the last open crosscut to the working face. Because it is a great distance from the fan, the resistance of the line brattice can result in more overall leakage than an equivalent resistance closer to the fan. Substituting auxiliary fans for brattice eliminates this source of resistance, with improvements in system efficiency and cost. Also, in some mines, the leakage that leads to spontaneous combustion can be reduced. The benefits obtained by several different brattice and fan substitutions have been studied by Mine Ventilation Services, Inc., under contract to the Bureau of Mines. Changes in main fan duty were compared with additional costs associated with auxiliary fans. Results indicate that in some circumstances, considerable leakage reductions and cost savings are possible.

Locus Mining is working side-by-side with a prestigious iron ore company to evaluate the addition of Locus ESG-friendly green flotation reagents with the primary goal of improving recovery and grade. In this paper, we will focus on the cationic reverse flotation application. The most “established industry” reagents for cationic reverse flotation are amine as the collector, starch as the depressant, and in some cases frothers are also used (among them MIBC, pine oil, others). Here, we evaluate the synergies of different classes of eco-friendly biosurfactants and industry-standard reagents during the cationic reverse flotation method. Exploratory research was done first with an analog sample under different pHs, eight different biosurfactants with starch and no-starch, and a customized DOE was used to perform 145 microflotation tests. The results show Separation Efficiency from 20% (baseline) to 50% (biosurfactant), and Selectivity from 3.27 (baseline) to 5.67 (biosurfactant). Optimized result conditions were then applied to the iron ore samples received from our client to perform flotation tests on a Denver Lab cell. Similar results were obtained by improving Separation Efficiency and Selectivity, which corroborate with the previous work.

1. A schematic diagram and a description of the apparatus are presented. 2. Five runs were made using gas having a hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratio of about 2:1 and sulfur concentrations ranging from nil to 1.53 grains per 100 std. c.f. 3. At constant space velocity of synthesis gas the product of the sulfur concentration and days of operation, with conversion of H2 + CO above 97 percent, was constant. With a gas containing 0.04 grain of sulfur ac carbonyl sulfide per 100 std, cu. ft ,, the conversion of H2 + CO remained over 97 percent for 40 days. During that time the heating value of the product gas (on a C02-free basis) remained relatively constant at 940 B .t .u. per c.f., based on dry gas measured at 600 F. and 30 inches Hg.

Oldright has been temporarily released from his regular duties to act as your secretary. We have asked him and Mr. McElvenny to make the necessary preliminary arrangements and to present to you at the opening session the greetings of the officers and' directors of the Institute. I am very glad that it has been possible for you to come together under the auspices of the Institute and that the acceptance of our invitation has been so very unanimous. Such an acceptance of the invitation to this meeting indicates your interest in getting together for an exchange of technical data and ideas. We anticipate that this meeting will be of real service to the smelting industry through your open discussion and exchange of ideas, and we sincerely hope that you will form an organization which will arrange for future meetings of a similar nature. While it probably may not be desirable to. distribute the minutes of this conference except to the members who take part in it, we hope that later the Institute publications may be enriched by such matter as you think it desirable to have published; and also, that some of you may be able to offer technical papers for the Institute publications. Currently an Australian Standard for tunnel fire safety is being developed for road and rail tunnels. Other local guidance relating to tunnel fire safety that has recently become available includes publications by both the Roads and Traffic Authority and RailCorp of New South Wales. Internationally, the World Road Congress has completed its 2004 - 2007 cycle, which has resulted in a number of publications. International developments in rail guidance include a new European Standard regarding fire safety in railway tunnels that will come into effect in July 2008. In addition, the National Fire Protection Association committee NFPA 130 are in the process of revising their standard for fixed guideway transit and passenger rail systems, which is due for publication in late 2009. This paper outlines the status of these and other recently published relevant local and international fire safety guidelines and their implications for tunnel projects in Australia.

Modem open cut and underground mining in the tropics inevitably expose partially weathered and unweathered rocks to oxygen and water, leading to weathering and the release of solutes and often acidity as well. Historical monitoring data can demonstrate these phenomena. Three case studies from open cut mines in the north of the Northern Territory illustrate the deterioration in quality of pond water receiving drainage from waste rock dumps. The potential for deterioration of water quality was not recognised in many mine Environmental Impact Statements prepared and accepted in the 1980s. The examples documented indicate the importance of adequately planning for this near inevitable process. Retrofitting a mine water management system to 'no' or minimal release can be very difficult and expensive, and may not be feasible, leading to downstream pollution. The characterisation of acid and solute production potential of ore and waste rock, and improved dumping strategies and water management are very important to minimise the environmental impact of mining in the tropics.

Industrial minerals production in Newfoundland in--creased in gross value by a total of 175 per cent during the ten-year period from 1954 to 1964. The Province accounts for all of ?Canada's fluorspar production and contains one of the most important fluorspar districts in North America. It is also the only producer of pyrophyllite in Canada, and quite recently has become an important producer of asbestos fibre. Limestone, gypsum, brick shale, sand and gravel also ?Contribute appreciably to the expanding industrial minerals phase of the Province's rapidly growing mining industry. Geological diversity characterizes Newfoundland's industrial minerals: Pyrophyllite deposits were formed by contact metamorphism of predominantly volcanic Proterozoic rocks. Fluorspar deposits are fissure-filling veins having the characteristics of typical epithermal deposits. Chrysotile asbestos production comes from one of the Island's serpentinized ultrabasic belts. Limestone is produced at three localities; two of them in the extensive carbonate rocks of the west coast. Gypsum production comes from a thick evaporite (gypsum and anhydrite) sequence in the Carboniferous rocks of the St. George's Bay area. Introduction

Experimental determination of the response of an AG/SAG mill treating two components of significantly different impact resistance is challenging for two main reasons: firstly, small scale laboratory tests have yet to be confirmed as valid representations of the full scale milling environment, and secondly pilot plant testing requires 10-20 tonnes of ore per scenario which precludes the use of drill core, rendering the process very expensive. In order to mitigate these difficulties, modelling was considered as a potential way forward. However, as the JKSimMet AG/SAG model currently has no capacity to simulate the interaction of two ore types with differing impact resistance, density and/or feed size distributions, an alternative modelling approach was developed. This approach aims to essentially calibrate the AG/SAG process under a set of given conditions, for which survey data and the ore properties of the main components in the feed blend already exist. This paper describes a new conceptual model, which provides a simplified approach for investigating the multi-component behaviour of two ores of differing hardness/SG in a given AG/SAG milling environment, and which can potentially be used for scale-up from laboratory/pilot testwork and geometallurgical estimation of throughput.

As a part of the strategic mineral program, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples several manganese properties in Colorado. As all of the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable to manufacturers of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were required .to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration. Manganese in the form of impregnations in sedimentary beds is found in the Denver plains area a few miles east of the Rocky Mountain front. Deposits are reported to occur intermittently over a distance of more than 200 miles. The manganese oxides occur in beds of conglomerate or arkosic sand, generally accompanied by limonite. The Manganese and iron oxides,, however, usually are found in separate layers. Three samples were submitted for beneficiation tests, two samples from Buckley Field bombing Yang, Arapahoe County, and one from near Franktown, Douglas County.

AKNOWLEDGE of the density of a pulp or suspension is frequently required by the millman, to whom fluctuations in density, which occur in all mill circuits, are of importance and interest. There ,are many w.ays currently in use to determine density and probably the most common method is to take samples of the pulp. The proper sampling of the material is no easy matter, particularly when the pulp contains a sand fraction which settles rapidly. For example, when filling a liter container from the overflow of a classifier, it is al-most impossible to fill the can completely and yet prevent overflow. If there is an overflow, the pulp remaining in the can invariably has an excess of sand and the indicated density will be too high. To surmount such difficulties, and to obtain a continuous indication of the density of a pulp at any desired depth, the simple indicator shown diagrammatically in Figure l was designed by the writer in 1951. The Henderson Mine developed a water treatment system in 1985 to meet the NPDES requirements for its mine water discharge. Unacceptable levels of Zinc and Manganese formed the basis for the design and operation of the treatment system. Since initial start up, this system has reliably removed metals from the mine water and facilitated low cost compliance with water standards. The potential addition of a bio- monitoring requirement to the NPDES Permit in 1990 has added a second dimension to the metals removal process. This paper will review the history of Henderson's success at developing a low capital treatment system for metals removal and the anticipated effects of bio-monitoring upon this system based upon preliminary bio-monitoring screening.

Sixty-one fatal accidents were reported in the mines of Alabama during 1930. This number is a decrease of 15 per cent as compared with 1929; however, production was 13 per cent and the man-hours worked were 16 per cent less than in the previous year. There were 21,731 men employed inside and 3,386 outside. Table 1 gives the comparative rates per million tons and per million man-hours for the United States and for Alabama for 1929 and 1930. These rates are based on figures published by the State and by the United States Bureau of Mines, with preliminary figures for 1930. (These sources of data are used throughout this paper.)

The pile loading tests are generally conducted to assess the safe load on piles in compression. In the Indian practice, the safe load is determined using the pile loading test data and the two criteria specified in the Indian Standard Code, IS.2911 (Part 4) -1985. For this, the test pile should have undergone a minimum displacement equal to 10% of the pile diameter. Often, the piles are not subjected loads that are sufficient to cause a displacement of this magnitude. If the settlement is at least 12 mm, then the safe load is determined based only on the first criterion. But, if the settlement is less than 12 mm, the safe load cannot be determined using the IS Code criteria. The paper presents two procedures called hyperbolic and generalized hyperbolic methods to estimate the safe load using the IS Code criteria even when the loading test data is insufficient. The data from two initial tests have been analyzed. The predicted safe loads have been compared with the actual safe loads.

Fires in heavily timbered mines are disastrous, involving danger to both life and property. Some mines have been completely ruined or so heavily damaged that reopening them would not pay. Though few mines are entirely free from danger of fire, the risk is minimized by proper care and good design of plant. The Tintic Standard mine is at Dividend, Utah, in the famous Tintic mining district, about 60 miles south of Salt Lake City. The development of the mine was begun in 1907 by the late Mr. E. J. Raddatz and his associates. From the beginning, the work was hampered by high rock temperatures and the presence of high concentrations of rock gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Development work was carried on with great perseverance for nine years, and resulted in the discovery of ore in 1916. The total production of the Tintic Standard mine to Jan. 1, 1936, amounted to 1,664,388 tons of ore, having a gross value of $61,996,719. General Layout of the Mine The No. 2 shaft, which is the main working shaft of the Tintic Standard, is within the main orebody and is connected with the five other shafts. Their respective positions with respect to the No. 2 shaft are as follows: North Lily, 2770 ft. northwest with drift connections on the 700 and 900-ft. levels; No. 3 shaft, 670 ft. east connected through the 700-ft. level; Eureka Standard, 4550 ft. south, connected on the 900-ft. level; No. 1 shaft, 1470 ft. southwest, with connecting drifts on the 900 and 1250-ft. levels; Eureka Lilly, 2000 ft. southwest, with connecting drift and raise through the 1250-ft. level. The Tintic Standard orebody consists essentially of one continuous oreshoot extending from the 600-ft. level to the 1450-ft. level, with a cross-sectional area of approximately 70,000 sq. ft. at both top and bottom, reaching a maximum area of 215,000 sq. ft. between the 1100

"The effect of operational conditions, such as air flow rate, impeller speed and solid concentration, as well as the effect of solids concentration and frother dosage, on the bubble size distribution produced in a lab scale flotation cell, were investigated. The cell was operated under batch conditions. The measurement of bubble size was accomplished using an automated photographic technique. The technique enabled fine and coarse bubble distributions to be measured in two-phase (liquid-gas) and three-phase systems (solid-liquid-gas). In each experiment, around ten thousand bubbles were characterized.This paper discusses the main results obtained using the new photographic technique and compares these with previous findings available in the literature. The results indicate that photographic techniques combined with digital imaging processing might become a standard technique for measuring bubble size distribution in flotation machines.HUT BUBBLE SIZE ANALYSERThe importance of having precise and reliable equipment for measuring bubble size distribution in industrial flotation machines has been widely recognized. The measurement of bubble size, particularly in three-phase systems, is rather complex due to the opaque nature of the pulp. However photographic techniques combined with ingenious sampling techniques are utilized for overcoming this difficulty. The technique named HUT, combines previously developed visualization methods with digital image processing procedures. In this technique bubbles and aggregates are exposed to a monochrome progressive scan camera. The acquired images are directly stored in a computer connected to the camera for post-processing. The sampling apparatus consists essentially of a vertical tube for collecting bubbles, a viewing chamber and a collection chamber, where particles carried by the bubbles are released. The function of the collection chamber is to maintain the viewing chamber clear for imaging purposes. Each image is automatically processed off-line, using digital image tools. In this paper the advantages and limitations of this new technique are described."

The enrichment of useful components from ores and/or wastes has become important with increasing recent worldwide resources demand and the amount of wastes generated from the urban mines, in order to establish real ?sound resource-cycle society? including the activity of resource exploitation. The first stage of the treatment in the process must be comminution and it is important to make good liberation among compositional phases in the targeted resources. Electrical disintegration (ED) is well known to make a selective breakage at phase boundary. However, the detailed mechanism of the phenomena is not clarified yet, in especial, on the influence of electrical properties of compositional materials on the liberation. This paper made a comparison between the liberation degrees of ED products and the results of electromagnetic field analysis using finite element method (FEM). In the experiments, we used several synthetic cement paste based samples in which mineral particles were dispersed to apply the ED, and in the electromagnetic field analysis, we calculated the charge density accumulated and the Maxwell stress at phase boundary. It was found, for highly insulating mineral samples, that higher breakdown voltage was necessary because electric charge was not easily accumulated at phase boundary but that higher liberation degree was obtained after the breakdown (ED). It was also found the tendency that higher liberation was observed for the samples which had higher maximum Maxwell stress calculated by the electromagnetic field analysis. From the results, the electrical charge and Maxwell stress induced at phase boundary could be driving forces of selective breakage. In addition, we also applied the ED to the printed circuit boards (PCBs) in order to concentrate miner rare metals, which were essential for producing electronic devices. It could be demonstrated that the devices installed on the PCB were easily detached from the board and that most of metal elements in the devices was exposed and liberated from the insulating plastic covers, which were broken in the ED, then, it is considered that the subsequent solid phase separation could be effective for concentrating such metal elements. Iron containing leach residues like jarosite and goethite from electrolytic zinc production contain many valuable metals and harmful substances. These metals and substances should be removed in order to obtain an acceptable, stable and reusable product, and maximize economic feasibility as well as minimize environmental footprint. In this work, the processing of jarosite leach residue was studied in laboratory scale experiments under oxidizing and reducing conditions at high temperatures. First, the pretreated material was melted and oxidized to produce a melt of metal oxides. Second, the oxide melt was reduced in CO–CO2 atmosphere. Target after the reduction step was to obtain a clean slag and a liquid metal or speiss phase that collects the valuable metals, such as silver. The kinetics of the thermal processing were studied for determining optimal times and conditions for the aforementioned process steps. The preliminary results show that the process is thermodynamically feasible, and the desired phases can be obtained in the experimental conditions investigated.

The Olympic Dam Mine is a large, mechanised, underground operation currently producing 2.2 million tonnes-per-year of copper/uranium/gold ore. The mine is accessed via one shaft and one service decline. An additional 13 raise bored ventilation shafts have been completed to-date.Ventilation requirements are stringent in order to provide adequate dilution and removal of diesel fumes, radon gas/daughters and heat generated from both engines and wall rock.Due to the nature of the orebodies, the mine workings will continue to expand laterally necessitating the addition of at least one major surface raise every year.
