The impact generated by old abandoned mines in Peru have produced mining environmental liabilities, which can generate an impact on the environment. In the search for long-term sustainable solutions, Phytoremediation is presented as an interesting alternative, since it allows the use of Peruvian native plant species for the accumulation of heavy metals. In this paper, we present the results of native high Andean species: Stipa Ichu and Cortaderia Nitida. The final metal concentration in the aerial parts and in the roots of each plant show that Stipa Ichu is more efficient to recover Fe, reaching almost 278 times its initial value. In the same way, this plant is efficient to remove Zn, Cu and Cd, reaching maximum values of 64, 39 and 12 times its initial concentration respectively. Cortaderia Nitida turned out to be more efficient to recover Fe, Zn, Cu and Cr, with highest recovery of 250, 117, 39 and 13 times its initial value respectively. Finally, based on translocation factor, Stipa Ichu has better capacities of hyperaccumulation of Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cr. Cortaderia Nitida only shows hyperaccumulation of Cr.

Newmont has had continuous production at their Ahafo operations, Ghana, since 2006. In 2013, Ahafo initiated an efficiency programme to improve mill performance and reduce energy consumption. Following this assessment, a Turbo Pulp Lifter (TPLTM) was installed in the Ahafo SAG mill in April 2015 to replace the existing radial pulp lifters. Plant operational data showed delivery of a power saving of 10 per cent, an improvement in throughput of 3.3 per cent, with no loss of grind size. Pulp lifter life was also doubled from 11 to 22 months.However, during subsequent relines when the grates were removed it was found that one in four of the outer pulp lifters were wearing at a faster rate than the remainder. This was investigated by Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling, which predicted some overtopping and internal recycle within the pulp lifter. Significantly, the model predicted that the recycled material would pass back down every fourth outer pulp lifter, matching the field observations. Subsequently, the DEM investigation was continued and became an R&D project to improve the TPL design. Though the burning of fuels extends far back into antiquity, and though fuel beds are the most common and widely distributed example of chemical actions and engineering practice, there has been little attempt to group fuel beds by types or to define the principles associated with them. This paper does not profess to cover completely the subject of fuel beds. It suggests some of the over-all principles of the two more common types. No new investigational data are included, but the deductions are largely based on a recent publication of the U.S. Bureau of Mines'. Definition of Types There are three primary types of fuel beds: (I) Underfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in the same direction; (2) overfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in opposite directions; (3) crossfeed, in which the fuel and the air move at right angles to each other. The principle that fixes the type is the relation between directions of the flow of fuel and of air. Fig. 1 shows the three types diagrammatically. All other types are compounded of these three in a simple or more or less complex manner. It does not follow that these three type designations are limited to the methods used in representing them in Fig. 1; they may be turned in any direction, and as long as the relative directions of the fuel and air are the same the type is not changed. For example, A as shown .resembles a pot-type stoker, but the air and fuel can move downward as in the so-called smokeless heating boiler furnace. Also, C can be placed horizontal, as in chain-grate stokers. For this reason, the terms used to designate the three types are not all that could be desired; more logical ones could be coined, but those used probably are satisfactory until the discussion of fuel-bed types becomes more common.

Both water pollution and proposed solid waste disposal regulations have a definite effect on the copper leaching industry and some of the major factors affecting the industry are discussed in this paper. New developments of the NDPS are discussed with emphasis on the "toxic" or priority pollutants and EPA's philosophy on the control of these pollutants, The protection of groundwater is the prime aim of RCRA through solid/hazardous waste management. Some of the major elements of the RCA regulations that will affect the copper leaching industry are discussed.

Pricing for tantalum raw materials experienced explosive increases in the period 1978-1979, and-similar declines over 1980-1982. The causes for this are examined. Negative effects on the industry are highlighted. Analysis is provided of subsequent structural changes within the industry which minimize probability of future pricing excursions. Data on markets, sources of material, and outlines of concentration and extractive processes are reviewed. The conclusion is reached that expanded sources, future flat demand, and a broader international base of industry participants are principal forces in this restructure. Flat demand is reviewed as a function of increasing application of tantalum, but in more cost effective forms. This is driven by technical advance, notably in electronics applications.

One who is dedicated to Public Service and Safety in the State of Colorado, and known in the mining field and the Colorado Mining Association. We are very pleased to introduce Mr. Donald Haske, Chief Mine Inspector for the State of Colorado: Donald Haske: Officers, Members and guests. It is certainly my pleasure to be here today and an extra special pleasure to be presiding over this session. As some of you know, from natural up, heavy equipment is rapidly coming to the field of mining. This may seem a long way off at the present, but it certainly isn't. We are getting all the old annuals (Bi) together to be compiled for a guide and public attraction. However, we are unable to locate an (1894 panel). If any of you know of any of these please let us know.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of delayed blasting experiments at a West Virginia contour coal mine that resulted in smoother highwalls. The 17; were smoother due to reduced overbreak and inherently safer A, to reduced likelihood of rockfall. Reduced overbreak was accomplished by an increase in the highwall hole delays, which changed the effective delay pattern geometry and the direction of burden movement. The blast delays in the highwall holes were 50 to 100 ms longer than the mine's nominal design pattern (flat V, 17- by 42-ms surface delays, 200-ms in-the-hole delay). The burden movement was effectively changed from a 45* angle to 90* with respect to the highwall. The results of the blast delay changes were evaluated using terrestrial photogrammetry to generate vertical profiles at regular intervals. This evaluation showed that delay changes produced generally smoother vertical profiles.

"The San Nicolás deposit is a complex fine grained polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit located in central Mexico.Metallurgical testwork was carried out in 1999 and 2000 to develop a flowsheet. During the course of the metallurgical testwork it became evident that it would be impossible to develop an accurate head gradehecovery based model for the projection of metallurgy. It was suspected that variability in mineral texture was a predominate factor affecting metallurgy. For this reason it was decided to evaluate the applicability of QEM*SEM technology to this test program.This paper summarizes the metallurgical testwork and describes the evaluation and subsequent application of the QEM*SEM technology to characterize the mineral texture throughout the deposit. Finally it is shown how the QEM*SEM data are used in the mine block model to project the metallurgy.The QEM*SEM (Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy) is an automated image analysis system developed by CSRO which provides quantitative numerical estimates of the compositional and textural properties of the mineral suite which govern the concentration process.INTRODUCTIONThe San Nicolás deposit, was discovered in 1997 through the application of geological and geophysical techniques. The property lies 60 km southeast of the city of Zacatecas on the central Mexican plateau as shown in Figure 1."

Current attitudes by exploration companies towards working on another party's exploration permit or equivalent vary widely. That this is so is due to the virtual absence, on the one hand, of anything in the mining legislation in any jurisdiction that establishes what are the exclusive rights to explore, as opposed to apply for a mining tenement, that the grant of such an authority conveys on the holder, and on the other hand, of any code of ethics or set of guidelines to proper practise. By contrast, in most states and territories, if not all, it is an offence to enter onto a mining tenement, other than to cross it, without the consent of the holder, although until recently most field personnel would have been unaware of this and most explorers would have transgressed at one time or another. A similar vacuum exists where aerial surveys are concerned. There are in fact no guidelines. It has always been assumed that a party wishing to carry out such a survey was free to do so, without even an obligation to notify the holders of any tenements or permits in the area to be surveyed, let alone make available to them any data from the survey. Concepts of 'geophysical trespass' now being tested in the US also raise the possibility that data won from adjoining ground using geophysical techniques may be privileged. Attitudes now appear to be changing. In the absence of legislation or any code of practise, what does the industry regard as ethical behaviour? Do we need to define the rights and obligations of various parties more clearly, and if so, what should they be and to what extent will it be necessary to confirm them by legislation as opposed to adopting a code of practise? Will the existence of such a code in fact improve corporate practise?

This presentation will demonstrate some recent advancements in the applications of Project Information Systems (PIMS) technology to seepage barrier walls in the context of evolving Owner Specifications. The use of geospatial technology in particular is used to track, visualize, and analyze data from a variety of sources and serve those data to contractors and owners via dashboards and as-built drawings. Data describing the geometry of construction elements (including diaphragm panels, secant piles, and jet grout columns) is of particular importance on these projects, and this presentation will include case studies in the United States of how these data are used to determine if a barrier wall is constructed as designed and if it meets the owner specifications with respect to tolerance (i.e., if each element is sufficiently close to vertical) and overlap (i.e., do adjacent elements overlap sufficiently to prevent leakage).

An extensive investigation has been made of the deformation behavior associated with the Fe3Si super-lattice using transmission electron microscopy techniques. Above 243°K the stress-strain curve exhibits three stages. Stage I occurs at a very low stress level and is related to the generation of perfect superlat-tice dislocations. Stage II is characterized by an extremely rapid rate of work hardening and is associated with the Taylor type locking of these superlattice dislocations. Finally Stage III is related to dynamic recovery processes since the work hardening rate is very small. Below 243ºK, only Stage I is observed, but it occurs at a much higher stress level. This latter observation is related to the generation of imperfect dislocations in Stage I with the consequent production of second nearest neighbor antiphase boundaries. The reason for this is that insufficient thermal energy is available at these low temperatures to generate the complete and perfect superlattice dislocations. It has been shown that the fully ordered FeCo alloys, i.e., those possessing the B2 type structure, exhibit three distinct stages of work hardening whereas the corresponding disordered alloys show only one.&apos;" This difference in behavior between the disordered and ordered alloys has been attributed to the fact that dislocations in the former case travel only as ordinary 1/2ao(111) types whereas in the latter case the move through the lattice as coupled 1/2a0(111) dislocations separated by an antiphase boundary (APB), i.e., the so-called superlattice dislocation. Although some preliminary work has been carried out concerning plastic deformation in ordered alloys possessing the DO3 type superlattice,3 no detailed analysis similar to that described in Refs. 1 and 2 has been attempted. Specifically, it has been suggested that the superlattice dislocation in this particular type structure should consist of four ordinary 1/2ao<111> types bound together by first and second nearest-neighbor APB&apos;s. Fe3A1 and Fe3Si are the two classic alloys possessing the DO3 type lattice; however, because of the somewhat higher ordering energies associated with the FesSi alloy, which in turn assures that dislocations will travel through the lattice as perfect superlattice dislocations under at least some conditions, it was chosen for the present investigation. Because of the extreme brittleness of Fe3Si, all deformation was done in compression. Stress-strain curves were obtained using both polycrystalline samples as well as single crystals. In the latter case the crystals were oriented so that deformation could be controlled either by single or double slip. They were then wafered parallel to and at various angles to the operative slip planes. These wafers were in turn examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques in order to determine the extent of the interaction from the dislocation configuration contained therein. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation were arc melted under helium from electrolytic iron of greater than 99.90 wt pct purity and transistor grade silicon of 99.99 wt pct purity. A typical analysis of interstitial impurities showed 120 ppm 0, 15 ppm N, and 65 ppm C Because of the extremely low ductility of the Fe3Si alloys, it was necessary to spark cut 0.230-in. diam polycrystalline cylinders 0.400 in. long from arc-melted fingers using a thin-walled brass tube as a cutting tool. The polycrystalline alloys could not be recrystallized since very little strain was induced in preparation. However they were annealed at 1273°C for 15 min in evacuated vycor capsules to relieve any cooling stresses that may have developed during solidification and then air cooled. The resulting grain size of the alloy was 0.50 mm. According to warlimont4 1273ºC is just within the single phase field where FesSi possesses the DO3 type lattice. In addition because of this high critical ordering tem-ature, air cooling from this temperature was believed sufficient to fully order all of the Fe3Si samples used in the present investigation. For the same reason, no attempt was made to achieve any degree of disorder by quenching. In fact, rapid quenching from 1123°K caused cracking. Such cracking was first suggested by sato5 with respect to the experimental observations of Glaser and Ivanick.6 Single crystal compression specimens were spark cut from single crystal ingots grown in a Bridgman type furnace. The iron and silicon for the crystals was prealloyed by arc-melting two 130-g buttons which were cut into small pieces before remelting in the furnace. This procedure resulted in a long-range inhomogeneity of 0.5 at. pct Si between the top and bottom of the 2-in.-long single crystal ingot, which was assumed to be negligible in the present investigation. The single crystals, after orienting and spark-cutting, were about 0.37 in. by 0.37 in. in cross section and about 0.5 in. long. True stress-strain curves were obtained using an Instron Tensile Testing machine in conjunction with techniques described previously. 1,7 The strain rate was 0.05 in. per in. per min. Prior to testing, the ends of all the compression cylinders were hand polished using a special jig to insure parallelism after which the sides of the samples were electrochemically polished to eliminate stress risers and to facilitate slip line observations. Test temperatures between 77" and 823°K were obtained using various cooling and heating media as described in Ref. 7 while at the upper end of this temperature range, a mixture of equal

[In the course of the investigation the Bureau of Mines is carrying on to determine the causes, behavior, and control of mine fires, the detection of incipient heating underground in the mines and above ground in refuse banks has received consideration. A report has been puplished5/ describing apparatus and tests made on anthracite to determining the amount and composition of the oxidation products when normal dry air was passed through it at temperatures varying from 100° to 350° C. These tests showed that the amount of evolved gases and their relative prorortions varied with the temperature. This report presents is an evaluation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the effect of clay-water, brine, and oil-base drilling fluids on the productivity of test wells drilled on the Umiat anticline in U.S. Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 in northern Alaska. Eleven, wells were drilled on the Umiat structure as part of the U.S. Navy&apos;s extensive exploration of the Reserve during 1944-53 to determine the possibilities for oil production. The Federal Geological Survey cooperated in the exploration program and has published a comprehensive report3/ on the geology of the area and case histories of the wells. The re¬port also includes the results of special studies by the Bureau in connection with the drilling and coring of well 9 with oil-base mud in hole and was the source of much of the information used in preparing this publication. Of the eleven wells, four were drilled with rotary tools and water-base mud (one of the water-base muds was an oil-in-water emulsion mud), five were drilled with cable tools with brine in the hole, one was drilled with cable tools with brine in the hole and later reamed with rotary tools and crude oil, and one was drilled with rotary tools and oil-base mud. Although all of the wells penetrated sandstones that contained oil and gas, some were productive and others were not. The latter two wells, one completed with crude oil in the hole (with some added brine) and the other with oil-base mud, had the greatest productive capacities. The wells drilled with cable tools and brine in the hole had lower productive capacities. In contrast, two of three wells completed with rotary methods and fresh-water drilling mud and the well com¬pleted with rotary and emulsion mud were unproductive.

"This paper will discuss the design analysis of sheet pile cofferdams for static and dynamic blast loads. Following construction of the new Willis Avenue Bridge across the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan, in-river piers No. 9 and No. 10 from the former bridge were demolished, partially by explosive charges. The blast at Pier 10 was conducted first and though the demolition charge was relatively small, it gave confidence that the sheeting could be designed to resist the blast load. This paper primarily summarizes our analysis and performance of a sheet pile cofferdam at Pier 9 used to withstand the larger blast loads, contain the blast debris, and allow excavation of the pier below the existing river bed mudline. The program NLFlex was used to predict stresses and deformations of the cofferdams under dynamic blast loads, using simplified equations to estimate the underwater blast pressures. Specifically, the analysis focused on the stresses in the struts, waler beam, sheet pile interlocks and connection of the sheeting to the waler beam. Design included allowing plastic deformations and limited rupture of the sheet pile interlocks under the blast loading. Comparisons are made between stresses assessed by the dynamic finite element modeling and empirical relationships used within the industry. The performance of the system after the actual blast is discussed as well as details of the performance of welded vs. bolted connections within the system. IntroductionThe Willis Avenue Bridge is one of the major access ways from the Bronx into Manhattan. The location is shown on Figure 1. The original bridge constructed in 1901 was a swing bridge over the East River. The bridge was in disrepair and outdated with regards to its ability to handle the flow of traffic resulting in numerousaccidents.In 2007, Kiewit Constructors Inc./Weeks Marine, Inc., A Joint Venture was selected to construct a replacement bridge. The $612 million project included construction of a new bridge just to the south of the original bridge. The most notable aspect of the construction was floating and lifting the new 350 ft. long swing span in place as a single piece. However, another significant challenge was using blasting to demolish two of the abandoned piers which were within the East River. The blast would be near existing structures in both Manhattan and Brooklyn and would be within 30 ft. of the new bridge."

"The need to make repairs is seldom a major consideration in the design, fabrication and installation of major components of electrical generation plants. Repair welding, however, is a fact of life in the electrical generation industry, for restoration of degradation in service, from cavitation of hydraulic turbine runners, to corrosion and fatigue damage in pressure vessels. In making weld repairs to carbon and low-alloy steels, the largest source of trouble is hydrogen embrittlement and related post-weld cracking. Various strategies have been developed to control problems from this source, including post-weld heat treatment, the use of nickel-base alloy filler metals and the temper bead welding technique. Each of these basic strategies is being applied as circumstances require; each strategy must, however, be implemented in a manner that reconciles weldment structure and hardness, degree of restraint and service environment with the consequences of unsatisfactory performance of the repaired component.IntroductionMajor working components of electric generating plants are specified and installed on the basis that, wherever technically and economically feasible, they will retain functional capacity without major repairs for the twenty-five-plus years of normal plant lifetime. Nevertheless, repairs are often required, and welding is usually an essential feature of the work. Remedial welding may be performed to correct design or fabrication errors which become evident only at the time of component installation. The most common causes of requirements for repair involve corrosion, fatigue or related processes which prove more aggressive than expected during service. Increasingly, our planning for future repair requirements is related to continual improvements which are occurring in nondestructive evaluation technology. As components are periodically reinspected during their service life, fabrication induced defects may be revealed for the first time quite late in the life of the component. When this occurs, repair must be considered wherever inaccessibility of a flaw makes it impossible to prove its inactivity. Finally, there are certain components, for instance in hydraulic turbines, which cannot be economically made or used without the expectation of service induced wear. Here, periodic maintenance welding must be regarded as a normal event."

A conveyor belt fire presents a serious safety hazard in an underground coal mine. A review of underground coal mine fires involving conveyor belts which occurred within the past two decades was made by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Belt fires that occurred during this period of time have burned as much as 610 m of belting before the fire was extinguished. In an effort to improve safety, MSHA has undertaken a program to study the flammability of conveyor belts in large and small-scale tests. Large-scale tests were conducted on various types of mine conveyor belts using a range of airflows from 0 to 6.1 m/s. Data were obtained to evaluate the effect of airflow on flame spread and other combustion properties of the conveyor belts. The results from the large-scale tests were utilized to develop a new MSHA laboratory-scale test for evaluating the flame resistance of conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. Agreement of results based on a pass/fail criterion was obtained between the large-scale test and new laboratory-scale test. A summary of test results from the new test is shown for different conveyor belt formulations. MSHA also performed a series of fire tests with wood samples using the new laboratory-scale tunnel apparatus. These tests were conducted at airflows from 0.5 to 5.1 m/s to determine the effect on flame spread and burn damage. The data were also analyzed to determine if wood could be used as a calibration standard. The results indicate the flame spread behavior of the wood follows trends similar to results obtained with conveyor belts. The data did not show the precision needed to use wood as a calibration standard. MSHA intends through rulemaking procedures to replace the "20g" conveyor belt acceptance test with the new laboratory-scale test. MSHA also plans to implement a voluntary acceptance program. Under this program, a. conveyor belt manufacturer could obtain an MSHA acceptance for belts meeting the new test criterion. A belt accepted under the voluntary program could then be used underground. Use of conveyor belts meeting the new test would limit the propagation of fire and reduce the probability of igniting other combustibles in the belt entry.

The production of primary aluminium can potentially lead to metal that, with minimum treatment, meets a high purity standard. Smelters that can achieve a significant proportion of their production in this manner have a competitive edge which is of growing importance as the use grows for such items as compact discs and the like. Superimposed on the desire to produce high quality metal are stringent environmental requirements that the industry must adhere to. The environmental &apos;legislation focuses on fluoride emissions and the approach adopted is towards a zero waste management philosophy. The fluoride recycling process does, however, result in volatile impurities being captured and recycled to the cell. Aluminium has an extremely high reduction potential and this results in a significant proportion of the recycled impurities being reduced at the electrolyte metal interface and thus contaminating the metal. This paper reviews sources of impurities and the impact of the operating procedures adopted on metal treatment.
