Many profitable mines are commonplace to the geologist; and many presenting unique gcological conditions have been sad failures commercially. The Standard group at Bodie has produced in 25 years, $14,500,000, paying $5,000,000 in dividends.' On the other hand, this output has beeu mined (almost wholly above the 1,000-ft. level) from a system of more than 100 veins, ranging in thickness from 0.5 in. of ('specimen rock" to 30 ft, of clay and quartz; distributed through a zone about 2,000 ft, in width, and representing from three to five distinct periods of formation. This group, therefore, by reason of its industrial record as well as its geological features, may fairly be regarded as doubly interesting. Dr Claude Martin,Director General,WWF International The four quotes above well illustrate the challenges faced by companies and conservationists in attempting to achieve the societal goal of sustainable development. That this aspirational goal itself is far from clearly defined, although it has been widely accepted and endorsed by governments, business and civil society, exacerbates the challenges. Sustainable development has as its central thesis the integration of environmental, social and economic policy. Its attainment by business has been described John Elkington (1998) as the pursuit of the ætriple bottom lineÆ - the achievement of social and environmental targets, in addition to the traditional economic bottom line. It is self-evident that business is both competent and comfortable defining and measuring economic performance and reporting that performance to internal and external audiences. As long as information has been prepared according to the established standards of measurement and reporting of economic performance, all audiences can have confidence in its accuracy. Business does not enjoy the same competence and comfort with regard to social and environmental performance. This is no startling condemnation of business, any more than it is a criticism of governments, non-government organisations (NGOs) or academia. It is a statement of fact that the tools to allow for credible definition and reporting against the other two components of the ætriple bottom lineÆ have yet to be fully developed and are, therefore, far from being widely accepted. Crucial to achieving sustainability is the ability to measure progress toward the goal. The task is to develop means to define appropriate performance standards and to credibly measure and report company environmental and social performance against those standards.

"I - INTRODUCTIONSteel castings still comprise the largest volume of wear materials used in crushing and grinding in the Canadian mining industry. The range of impact and wear properties possible with steel castings enables them to be used successfully in both high impact crushing as well as milling where abrasion resistance is the main criterion. Approximately 15,000 tons per year of steel mill liners and crusher castings are used by Canadian mines.The properties of the main steel casting alloys used - manganese, pearlitic chrome-moly and martensitic medium carbon steels will be discussed with reference to their applications. Field data on a new application in primary gyratory crushers for martensitic medium carbon steels is presented. Liner wear life and mill efficiency can be improved through proper liner design.The liner wear pattern can be used as an indication for liner profile changes to improve wear life. Changes in liner configuration can improve through put and use of larger castings can reduce downtime. Casting performance can be improved and foundry production costs reduced by adopting certain design improvements.II - ALLOYS USEDTable I list the most common ferrous liner materials used in relation to their hardness and wear resistance (1). The most wear resistant materials are the irons at the top. In many applications the service impact exceeds the impact strength of the irons and tougher less wear resistant steels must be used. The impact resistance improves from top to bottom with manganese steel the toughest. The hardness of the martensitic steels approaches that of the Ni-Hards however the wear life, because of the absence of carbides, is less."

Esse trabalho tem como objetivo analisar por meio da termodinâmica computacional a influência do K2O na dissolução das fases sólidas formadas durante o processo de dessulfuração de ferro gusa. Para isso, foi utilizada a cal como agente dessulfurante e a Sodalita (Fonólio) como fundente, realizando uma adição de K2O no fluxante de 1% a 10%, com uma temperatura de trabalho de 1400ºC. Por meio do uso de software de termodinâmica computacional FactSage, foi possível simular e avaliar as fases sólidas e líquidas formadas na temperatura determinada e comparar com os resultados obtidos com outras análises. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que o aumento gradativo de K2O levam a um aumento do potencial termodinâmico de dessulfuração e melhores condições cinéticas, sendo a mistura que apresentou os melhores resultados a que continha 10% de sodalita com adição de 10% de K2O na fonte.

THE recirculating furnace is primarily a heating apparatus of the convection type in which the heat-absorbing surfaces are heated by a mixture of fresh products of combustion and a portion of the combustion gases that have already given off a part of their heat in their previous passage over the heat-absorbing surfaces. In its basic conception, the recirculating furnace can be considered as a closed thermal system in which the heat-absorbing surfaces are .constantly swept by a fixed quantity of products of combustion at a given initial temperature with the gases being constantly returned to the furnace and reheated before they again enter the heating zone. Gases equal in amount to that produced by the fuel burned to reheat the circulating gases are constantly ejected from the system to the stack. The recirculating furnace is the most suitable apparatus for heating by convection where low furnace temperatures must be maintained and where only a small portion of the available heat is taken out of the gases, particularly where the maximum allowable furnace temperature is low and where the final temperature of the gases is only a few hundred degrees below their initial temperature. In such cases, recirculation not only provides a method of reducing the rather high combustion temperatures of the fuel when burned without a large amount of excess air, but, by returning to the furnace the heat content of the gases at their final temperature, recovers a large portion of heat that otherwise would have been lost through the stack.

Ferromanganese crusts have traditionally been considered a potential ore for Co, whereas ferromanganese nodules have typically been considered a potential ore for Ni and Cu. However, both nodules and crusts sequester high concentrations of many metals (Table 1) from sediment pore waters and seawater, many of which are essential for high-tech applications. The resource potential of these rare and valuable metals is poorly known and they are the subject of considerable current research. The need for adequate and dependable supplies of these metals is essential for the development of new technologies. The rare-earth elements have recently received much attention in the scientific and popular press because of their use in so many high-tech applications and because more than 95% of the production comes from China (e.g., Service 2010); consequently, there is concern about the possibility of a significant decrease or even curtailment in exports from China. The lack of a primary source and the inadequate supply of Te have prohibited the development of a Cd-Te photovoltaic solar-cell industry (Hein et al. 2010). Inadequate supplies of many of the elements listed in Table 1 are limiting the development of key high-tech industries, forcing the use of alternative metals that [ ] may result in less efficiency or less favorable properties for a product. The rare-earth elements, Te, and other elements listed in Table 1 occur in high abundances in marine hydrogenetic and diagenetic ferromanganese deposits. Here, we look at the mechanisms by which these rare and valuable metals are incorporated into different genetic types of marine ferromanganese deposits.

IN the presentation of this paper to the Institute, three objects are in the mind of the writer: first, to set forth the close relation which, of necessity, exists between ceramics and the industrial minerals; second, to clarify the apparently hazy understanding which many have of ceramics in general; and lastly, of equal or even more importance, to stimulate a greater interest in the industrial minerals, especially in those used and required by the ceramic industries. While Canada is now producing in large quantities a fairly wide variety of the ceramic industrial minerals, there are some which are not known to occur in the Dominion. Hence it is to be desired that our geologists, prospectors, and others, while on field work, should be on the look out for commercial deposits of such minerals as diaspore, bauxite, ucts of a value in excess of $600,000,000, a figure which places ceramics as kyanite, massive topaz, and sillimanite. A find of any of these in quantity would prove of very great importance and value to the country as a whole. At this point it seems desirable to introduce formally the word ceramic or the plural of it, ceramics. In doing so it may be stated that the origin of the word dates far back in history in that it was derived in part from the Greek word Keramos, 'a potter' or 'pottery', which in turn has been traced back to an older Sanskrit root meaning 'to burn' or 'burned stuff', having reference, no doubt, to burned pottery or other clay wares; and the word was so used until near the close of the last century, when the world's first schools of ceramic engineering were established in the United States. The use of the term ceramics was then expanded to cover a much larger field the entire field of the silicate industries and products. At one time it was suggested by a limited number of ceramists that the term 'ceramic engineering' be changed to 'silicate engineering'. This proposal, however, gained little support and was soon abandoned.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) is committed to preserving and enhancing biodiversity in the areas in which we operate. As a member of the ICMM, FCX is committed to implement the 10 Sustainable Development (SD) Principles throughout our business. FCX is also a member of the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), a nonprofit coalition dedicated to protecting and enhancing wildl ife habitat. In alignment with ICMM SD Principle 7 and our Environmental Policy, FCX has set a performance goal to prepare a biodiversity inventory in 2010 and land management plan by end of 2011 for all active mining sites. In 2010 FCX established a Biodiversity Task Force to assist sites in biodiversity management; optimize use of resources around the globe; implement FCX goals and targets; and align biodiversity programs with ICMM principles and guidance. The task force consists of Environment and SD Department management, scientists and engineers from FCX sites, and WHC staff. The Task Force recently issued a biodiversity inventory guidance document to set expectations and provide consistency across the sites when developing a biodiversity inventory and land management plan.

This paper presents BF flotation machines in brief which are manufactured by Beijing General Research Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (BGRIMM). Dimensional analysis and similarity criteria have been used to scale up BF flotation machines. These scale-up criteria can be used to determine mechanical structure and hydrodynamic parameters including mixing, solids suspension, air transfer and power and so on. Similarity criteria are used to design 40m3 flotation machine being based on data from 1.2 m3 to 20 m3 flotation machines. Hydrodynamic tests of 40 m3 flotation machine in water are discussed.

Economic concentrations of potassium are essentially limited to thick, stratigraphic sections of marine evaporites. These deposits were precipitated through the evaporation of sea water in restricted epicontinental seas or in grabens related to continental margin rift systems. Following deposition the deposits were subjected to diagenesis and varying degrees of metasomatism and structural deformation. The origin and characteristics of potash deposits are easier to study and interpret than those of most ore deposits because the phase chemistry of the salt systems is known and the approximate composition of the ore-forming fluid (sea water) can be inferred with confidence. It is particularly helpful that the temperature and pressure of deposition approximated that of present earth surface conditions and the pertinent mineral assemblages can readily be duplicated in the laboratory. The study of these comparatively simple salt deposits provides examples of the practical advantages of understanding the genesis of an ore deposit. These observations, in turn, illustrate the importance of pursuing research on the more complicated magmatic, hydrothermal, and ground-water systems as a means to the more successful exploration for and exploitation of the deposits they have produced. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to discuss certain aspects of salt deposit geology as they contribute to exploration and mining through some understanding of ore formation. References to field examples and chemical relations in the salt systems are brief. All examples are more fully discussed, however, in the references cited.

The iron- and elemental sulphur-rich residues generated during batch and continuous pressure oxidative leaching of Inco Limited's Voisey's Bay nickel sulphide concentrate at 150°C in sulphate-chloride media have been characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The residues produced during the continuous leaching of the pentlandite- and pyrrhotite-rich concentrate consisted predominantly of hematite and elemental sulphur, with minor amounts of goethite. Although the iron species generated in the batch leaching tests were similar to those formed during continuous leaching, the morphologies of the hematite and goethite particles were significantly different. In addition to the tiny spheroids and bubble-like particles, the hematite and goethite generated during batch leaching occurred as larger "hollow" shell-like particles that contained residual pentlandite or sulphur cores. Although the leach solution from which the iron oxides had precipitated contained 5-15 g/L sodium, sodium jarosite was detected only in trace amounts in a few of the leach residues.

"Calicut Bypass Phase-II project included construction of 7 m high embankment over soft compressible clays up to 18 m in thickness. Approx 1.5 km length of road out of a total 5 km length consisted of abandoned paddy fields which were low lying, waterlogged and marshy in nature. On the basis of excellent results achieved in earlier phases of the by-pass construction, ground improvement work by installing pre-fabricated vertical drains (PVD) was undertaken to stabilize the embankment foundation along the weak clay areas prior to road pavement construction to avoid large post construction settlement as well as to improve the lateral stability during and after embankment construction. This project perhaps stands out as one of the highway projects completed within a very short time period of total 18 months including four month long heavy monsoon period, when embankment construction was not possible and construction of two bridges across rivers. All activities including the ground improvement had to be programmed and completed within the shortest time period possible. The paper discusses details of the extensive ground improvement and soil instrumentation carried out for the project and will illustrate how careful planning and execution can reduce the period required for highway projects involving ground improvement.INTRODUCTIONPhase-II construction of Calicut by-pass was undertaken on a priority basis by the State of Kerala in 2014. The main contract was awarded to M/S ULCCS Ltd, Kozhikode, Kerala and the ground improvement work was awarded to M/S Geo-Enviro Engineers P Ltd, as specialist agency to design and execute the work.Soil investigation carried out confirmed thick soft clay deposits below GL in three areas along the road alignment totaling approx 1.5 km in length. These areas were low lying, waterlogged and marshy in nature. Highway embankment had to be constructed up to 7 m in height above existing GL to form the proposed road alignment along these areas. On the basis of excellent results achieved in earlier phases of the by-pass construction using pre-fabricated vertical drains or PVD (R. Radhakrishnan, 2006), ground improvement using PVD had been included in the contract to stabilize the embankment foundation along the weak clay areas prior to highway embankment construction to avoid large post construction settlement as well as to improve lateral stability during its construction."

The new geophone described herein was developed by Charles H. Hull, instrumentmaker of the Colorado School of Mines, and the writer. The first geophone was invented during the war for the purpose of detecting enemy sapping or underground mining operations and for locating enemy artillery. It is based on the principle of the seismograph—a heavy lead mass suspended by one or two diaphragms, which are clamped to an air-tight case. When the ground vibrates during the transmission of sound waves, the case moves with it while the so-called steady mass remains practically motionless. Attached to the top of the casing is a hose leading to an earpiece shaped like a stethoscope. When the mass and the diaphragm move up and down in the case, the air is compressed and rarified in the inside; thus the vibration is communicated as sound wave to the human ear. The geophone combines a surprising simplicity of construction with an extreme sensitivity. Other listening instruments were developed during the war, adaptations of the telephone and the microphone—that is, instruments operating through the medium of electricity—of which the so-called seismicrophone, an adaptation of the carbon-granule microphone receiver, probably has found the greatest application, but such instruments apparently have not proved as useful as the simple geophone despite obvious advantages arising from the use of electricity. The carbon receivers were more subject to extraneous noises and to what is called "frying," and they did not offer the advantage possessed by the geophone; namely, the simultaneous use of two receivers, which makes it possible to determine the location of the source of sound. During the war, the U. S. Bureau of Mines made a study of the geophone and of the propagation of sound waves through rock. These studies have been continued, as the earlier results proved the possibility of using the geophone in various non-military ways, principally in mining, and the results of these studies have been published.'

Papers presented at a U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) technology transfer seminar describe the causes of violent material failure in U.S. mines, measurement techniques for monitoring events that result in violent failure, and mitigation techniques for controlling failure. Specific factors contributing to violent failure are identified on the basis of geotechnical monitoring in 16 U.S. hard-rock and coal mines and on statistical analyses of 172 coal bump events. New monitoring and analysis techniques developed as tools for assessing violent failure; geotomographic methods that provide new capabilities for the study of material failure and stress changes over large areas; and seismic methods for determining source locations, calculating energy release, and determining source mechanisms are described. Fair correlations have been established among seismic parameters, elastic stresses, face support load, and violent events. USBM studies have identified the advantages using both yielding and stable pillars for coal bump control. A computer program has been developed as an aid for selecting room-and-pillar layouts. The practical aspects of implementing a destressing program is outlined for coal mines, while the importance of mine orientation and timely support installation in controlling buckling-type failure is identified for hard-rock mines.

About 75% of the market economy countries's supply of cobalt is produced in Central Africa by Zafre and Zambia. Zafre alone accounts for more than 55% and has the resources and capacity to increase output significantly at any time so its dominant position is unlikely to be challenged in the foreseeable future. Other producers from domestic resources are Canada, Australia and South Africa; and Cuba, probably the most important producer outside of the Market Economy countries. Belgium, Norway, France, Japan and Finland produce cobalt from imported materials. While there are "cobalt ores", inMorocco, USA, Canada and the USSR, the mineralisation is complex and cobalt extraction is costly. In ZaPre and Zambia cobalt is a by-product of copper; in Canada, Australia, France, and Cuba it is a by-product of nickel; and in South Africa it is a by-product from the production of Platinum Group Metals. Thus the levels of cobalt production are inevitably related to the production of other primary metals. While some cobalt is produced by predominantly pyrometallurgical methods most of the world's cobalt is produced hydrometallurgically. The existence of large hydro-electric power plants and the mineralogy of the copper and cobalt concentrates encouraged research and development in Zafre of the recovery of copper and cobalt by electrowinning from sulfate solutions; much pioneering work was carried out, which lead to construction of the two largest copperlcobalt hydrometallurgical plants in the world, at Shituru and Luilu. Similar systems were adopted in Zambia. In Canada high pressure hydrometallurgical processes based on the sulfate system were developed and adopted in Australia, the Philippines, Finland and South Africa. Meanwhile developments in chloride hydrometallurgical extraction of nickel and cobalt lead to its use in the extraction of cobalt in Norway, France and Japan.

The oxidation of Cu2S in oxygen and the sulfating of Cu2O in oxygen-sulfur dioxide atmospheres was carried out under a variety of conditions. The oxidation of Cu2S was found to be retarded by entrapment of SO, and O2, which stabilized internal sulfates for long periods of time. The course of the reaction was followed by measuring weight changes and also by SO, evolution. Sulfating of Cu2O was a maximum at ratios of SO, to O2 approximating maximum SO, production. At elevated temperatures SO, was found to increase the rate of oxidation of Cu2 O to CuO even though sulfates did not form. All sulfating reactions followed the parabolic rate law indicating diffusion. MANY studies of the roasting of copper sulfides have been reported in recent years. Diev et al.1 investigated the roasting of chalcocite (Cu2S) in air, and oxygen enriched air. Lewis et al.2 also studied the oxidation of natural and synthetic chalcocite in air and oxygen atmospheres and their studies indicated that the maximum formation of water soluble sulfates occurred at approximately 450oC. Ashcroft3 reported that oxide production during the roasting of chalcocite resulted only from secondary decomposition of sulfates which were formed as primary products. peretti4 refuted this claim by showing that a layer of Cu2O appeared directly adjacent to the Cu2S during roasting of cylindrical briquettes of cupric sulfide, CuS. The linear advance of the Cu2S-Cu2O interface was used as a measure of the kinetics of the roasting reaction. The reactions proposed were: 2 CuS—Cu2S + 1/2 S2 [4-1] 1/2 S2 + O24 SO2 [4-2] cuzs +3/2 O2 4 Cu2O + SO2 [4-3] cu2o + 1/2 O2—2 cuo [4-4] At temperatures above 663oC, CuO was the only final solid phase reported. Below 663" C increasing amounts of sulfate were found mixed with the CuO. McCabe and Morgan5 investigated the roasting of discs of synthetic chalcocite and reported the following sequence of products beginning at the sulfide surface: Cu2O, a mixture of Cu2O and CuSO4, Cum,, CuO . CuSO4, and CuO. The principal reactions were reported to be: Cu2S + 3/2 O2-Cu2O + SO2 [5-1] CU2O + 2 SO2 + 3/2 O2—2 CUSO4 [5-21 2 CUSO4— CUO . cum, + SO3 [ 5-31 cuo . cuso4—-2 cuo + SO, [ 5-41 Eq.15-11 supports the claim of Peretti, Eq. [4-31, that CuzO is formed directly from Cu2S rather than as a secondary product from a sulfate as suggested by Ashcroft. On the other hand CuO was found to form as a secondary product from the decomposition of copper sulfate and basic copper sulfate, Eqs. [5-31 and [5-41. The formation of sulfates was explained by McCabe and morgan5 to be a direct reaction of Cu2O with 0, and SO, or SO, at distinct regions in which the partial pressures of each were such as to form the sulfate. Thornhill and pidgeon6 roasted both natural and synthetic chalcocite grains in air at temperatures between 420" and 550° C. They found a dense primary oxidation layer in contact with the sulfide. A secondary layer of porous oxidation products was found to expand with roasting time. The oxide products were leached away and the remaining core was studied by X-ray diffraction. The X-ray patterns showed an increased conversion of chalcocite to digenite with time. Digenite,7 a defect structure of cuprous sulfide, occurs naturally as Cu,-,S where x = 0.12 to 0.45, with an average analysis of Cu, ,S. The mechanism of digenite formation was proposed as: Cu2S + oxygen—Cu1-8S + 0.1 Cu2O [6-1] Cuj.eS + oxygen—0.9 Cu2S + SO2 [6-2] It is apparent from the above studies that the oxidation of Cu2S, ultimately ending in CuO, may be divided into ihree general stages (all of which may occur simultaneously): 1) primary oxidation to Cu2O; 2) secondary sulfate formation; and 3) sulfate decomposition. Consequently reactions of O2 and SO, with Cu20 constitute important aspects of the roasting of chalcocite. Virtually no studies have been made regarding sulfating reactions involving Cu,O. Mills and Evans8 noted the effect of sulfur dioxide on the oxidation of copper at low temperatures and low SO, partial pressures. They reported a measurable increase in the oxidation rate of copper when SO2, was present. When we were asked to prepare a paper on gold to be part of the Economics of Precious Metals session, our immediate thought was that we should address the question of supply. Are the existing mines of the world capable of filling the demand for gold? We recognized that gold does not conform to the normal pressures of supply and demand. Major new sources of production and increased sales might have a very short term effect and depress the price but this does not last very long. Those forces that affect gold prices are very different from the ones economists normally deal with. Factors such as mass psychology, political tensions and fear are certainly more important to the gold price than supply and demand in today's world.

This paper discusses briefly the evaluation of chrysotile asbestos deposits in ultramafic rocks. Such deposits are limited to serpentinized peridotite and/or dunites. The purpose of any evaluation is to determine whether a deposit contains sufficient ore mineral to justify profitable exploitation. Dimensions of a mineral zone are established by conventional methods, such as mapping, ground magnetic surveys, diamond drilling or underground exploration. The value of the contained asbestos fibre Is dependent on numerous physical properties such as fibre length, strength, flexibility, as well as the actual amount of fibre present. The determination of grade is difficult. The Quebec Standard Test (Q.S.T.) is used to grade fibre according to the proportionate lengths of fibre present. A method of visual vein counting allows calculation of an approximate percent fibre together with a simulated Q.S.T. Various drilling methods are discussed, diamond drilling is favored. Bulk sampling is required to determine fibre quality. Correlation of visual techniques and laboratory methods are often difficult. Reasons for any variance are discussed. Underground bulk sampling of most potential ore zones is strongly recommended to confirm the viability of the property. Evaluation of slip fibre deposits requires greater reliance on laboratory testing as visual methods are difficult to apply. Cross fibre has greater inherent strength.
