"When it comes to measuring the level of bulk solids, liquids, and everything in between, guided-wave radar technology now offers more level-detection capabilities than ever before. For an ever-widening range of previously hard-tomeasure products such as molten sulphur, liquid ammonia and petrochemicals, guided-wave radar transmitters provide accurate level measurements even under harsh chemical environments, wide variations in operating temperatures and pressures, and low dielectric constants.Great strides have been achieved in making these units easier to configure to a variety of process applications coupled with the simplicity of integrating these devices with most digital communication protocols. These improvements come as welcome relief to process engineers within an expanded range of level applications across several different industries that seek solutions to measuring the contents of tanks, silos, hoppers, bins, mixing basins, and vessels.Because radar transmitters have no moving parts, radar has already established a dominant niche in level measuring that quickly distances itself from mechanical means, which do not hold up as well in dirty service. Radar achieves its nonmechanical level detection capability by measuring the time of flight of the transmitted signal.Known more accurately as time domain reflectometry (TDR), the process involves sending microwave energy down into a vessel. When the pulse of radar energy reaches the product (indicated by a change in impedance), part of the pulse is reflected back toward the transmitter.A receiver measures the exact duration of time between the transmitted and reflected signal — the “time of flight.” The device analyzes this time and ultimately displays the level of the product as a distance in feet, metres, or other engineering units."

Syria is a federation of States under French mandate , comprising the Republic of Syria , the Lebanese Republic or Great Lebanon ( Grand Liban ) , the State of the Alouites , and the Djebel Druse Territory . Beirut is the center of government for the whole area , about 60,000 square miles . Syria is essentially an agricultural country . There is little manufacturing ; and with the exception of the production of asphalt and salt , the mineral industries have not yet risen to commercial importance . Whether this condition is due to a dearth of workable deposits or merely to insufficient exploration is not apparent . The mineral resources , as reported by various authorities , include asbestos , asphalt rock , bitumen , chromite , coal , copper , gold , gypsum , iron , lead , magnesite , manganese , marble and other building stones , nickel , ocher , pandermite ( a hydrous borate of calcium) , petroleum , phosphate rock , pyrite , salt , silver , sulphur , tin , and titanium ( ilmenitic beach sands ) .

The NISOMI-81 opaque mineral searcil and identification system uses quantitative color values (Pe, dA, y) and VHN as its determinative para-meters. The system is designed to operate on a Radio-Shack TRS-80 micro-computer which is interfaced to a motorised diffraction grating mono-chromator (WILSCAN). Using an interfaced monochromator/photometer combination a typical identification including the measurement of the photometer data on both specimen and standard, calculation of color values and a computer search takes about 6 minutes. The data file contains 240 minerals at present but can easily be expanded as reliable new data become available.

The results of column flotation tests conducted on a bulk sample of ultrafines discarded from the fine coal desliming cyclones at the Riverside coal preparation plant of Theiss Dampier Mitsui Coal Limited are presented. A 9% ash concentrate was obtained from a 51% ash ultrafine feed at 75-80% recovery of combustibles in a single stage of column flotation. From this result it is predicted that installation of column flotation at Riverside would lead to the annual recovery of additional coal worth $US5.1M. The operating conditions for coal and copper column flotation are compared and some differences which may result in a variation in column design are noted.

The mechanics of the continuous sintering process are briefly reviewed and the application of this process for the beneficiation of principal minerals used in making cement is shown. Pilot plant tests using pyrobeneficiation techniques were conducted with mixtures of limestone and shale in various ratios. Results are illustrated and show the percentage removal of carbon, carbonates, sulfur, alkalies, and volatiles as a function of the limestone-shale ratio. Tests with varying quantities of solid fwls, added to mixtures containing limestone and shale in a 4 to 1 ratio, were made to attain optimum elimination of the volatile constituents. Experimental results show that 90 pct of these constituents were removed during the calcination sintem'ng process. The advantages of using the beneficiated material for making cement are discussed with regard to prepam'ng, handling, and clinkering operations. A sintering process for treating raw materials or kiln waste products which contain high amounts of alkaline materials is described. Tests were performed with a high alkaline waste dust mixed in a 1 to 1 ratio with raw cement meal. The data from these tests and others using different halides for aiding alkali removal are evaluated by the alkali content of the cement clinker. Test results showed that the Dwight-Lloyd process could be applied with facility in beneficiating raw materials for cement making. Substantial quantities of deleterious volutile constituents were removed by calcining and sintering techniques. The continuous sintering process has been applied for a number of years as a means of beneficiating minerals for subsequent conversion to merchantable products. The process was developed and first used for nonferrous metallurgical applicatfons. However, it has risen to prominence for ferrous metallurgical applications where last year in the U.S. and Canada nearly 40 million tons of iron ore were treated by grate firing processes. Through the years of process development many investigators have realized the versatility of the sintering process and have directed experiments toward the use of it for applications with nonmetallic minerals. These have included calcining limestone, carbonizing coal, expanding shale, and burning cement raw meal. Today commercial sintering plants produce cement clinker from mixtures of limestone and shale, lightweight aggregate from shale or clay, and calcined products from phosphate shale. The mechanics of the downdraft sintering process have been presented by many authors. In general practice the materials to be agglomated are mixed as moistened fines with a solid fuel and this mixture is spread uniformly on the grates of the sintering machine. The charge is then momentarily directed under an ignition furnace. After ignition a continuous downdraft of air promotes combustion of the fuel and through heat transfer particles become partially fused into a coherent mass. This is cooled from continued draft induced after combustion. Many investigators have shown that distinct zones are formed during the process of sintering iron ores. At the midway point of the sintering process these are prominent and are, respectively, from the top of the bed to the bottom, comprised of a cooling zone of sintered material, a combustion zone of sinter formation, a calcination zone, a drying zone, and a zone of unreacted materials. Completion of sintering occurs near the discharge end of the machine where the firing zone approaches either the grates or grate dressing material called hearth layer. Here the peak draft temperature usually can be noted in the windboxes. The zonal pattern has been illustrated with the use of graphs which show thermal gradients as they progress through the bed of materials during sintering. Fig. 1 shows, in simplified form, thermal gradients existing when clinkering cement on a sintering machine. The thermal gradients illustrated are for periods of initiation, midway and completion of the clinkering process. THE rank of the Ruhr coal ranges from a high volatile bituminous coal to an anthracite, depending to some extent on the original depth of the seam. The average Ruhr coal corresponds to a soft bituminous American coal of a coking quality. The average thicknesses of individual coal seams being mined are also comparable (59 in. against 65 in. in the United States). However, consideration of seam conditions and mining conditions other than those just mentioned emphasizes differences rather than similarities with United States soft coal. In general, the Ruhr seams now being mined are much more folded and inclined than American seams. Dips of 20' and 30" are common in seams now being worked, and 30 pct of the coal reserves in the district are in seams dipping more than 35". Only on the tops and bottoms of folds do we find rather flat coal seams. In addition to the folding there is extensive displacement by cross faulting plus a certain amount of strike faulting of an overthrust nature, which results locally in doubling or omission of seams. Because of the long history of mining in the Ruhr, nearly all coal lying near the surface has long since been mined out, and we find that the average depth of mining is at present about 2300 ft below the surface. Deep mining, folding, and faulting result in seam conditions requiring a great deal more roof support than one finds in American soft coal mines. In fact only in the anthracite district and the Rocky Mountain and Pacific coal fields do we find somewhat similar conditions. It is easy to say, therefore, that the problem of mechanization of coal cutting and loading in the German mines is quite different from that which we have so effectively met in America with our mobile cutters and loaders, duck bill loaders, and a room and pillar system of mining our drift and slope mines. Partly because of more limited coal reserves, the traditional German mining system is largely the longwall method, which gives an almost complete coal recovery. Backfilling must be extensively practiced to protect the longwall faces, the over and underlying seams and workings, and especially the surface industrialized areas and barge canals. The German engineers have accordingly concentrated their efforts on the design of cutters, loaders, and conveyors suitable to longwall methods rather than room and pillar methods. Undercutters with cutter bars like American models have been in use in the Ruhr since well before World War 11. In 1941 they accounted for 8.5 pct of the production. This percentage, of course, includes coal which was undercut but nevertheless had to be broken down with air hammers or with explosives. The most common of these cutters is the Eickhoff Standard cutter (see fig. 1). This machine does about 95 pct of the undercutting in the Ruhr today, and is available with either compressed air or electrical power and in at least four different sizes. A variation of the cutter is this one with two cutter bars (fig. 2). At the end of 1947 about 200 of these machines and similar cutters were accounting for 13.2 pct of the total production, a production which was, however, only 60 pct of the 1941 production rate, so that the actual cutter tonnage was only up to a small amount over 1941. In 1941 about 3 pct of the production was accounted for by shearing machines making their cut perpendicular to the longwall face. They were similar to those used in the States. These machines are today considered obsolete and now account for only 0.7 pct of the total production. They are located at only a few mines and at present do not seem to have much of a future in the Ruhr. For the future, the Ruhr miner is looking forward to rather extensive mechanization of face work, with two major types of equipment being developed almost simultaneously. On one hand there is the development of cutter loaders for use in relatively hard coal. They represent the further extension of ideas developed after relatively long experience with the Eickhoff cutter. On the other hand there has been since 1942 an intense interest in the Ruhr in the development of face-stripping methods, particularly by the Kohlenhobel (coal plow) and its modification. At the end of 1947 these cutter loaders, Kohlen-hobels and scrapers together were actually accounting for only about 1.4 pct of total production while air hammers still broke 77.1 pct and as much as 1.2 pct was actually broken by hand picks. The Mt Keith Mining Alliance operates a fleet of large capacity hydraulic face shovels and more than 40 X 240 t capacity haul trucks to deliver annual production in excess of 40 Mbcm per annum. The Mt Keith Nickel mine is currently operating at a depth to 300 m below surface with a planned final depth of the order of 500 m. As is the case with any large open pit managing the health of the workforce on continuous shift operations is of critical importance to achieving outstanding safety and production outcomes. Fatigue management at Mt Keith is effectively managed by the personnel operating the mining equipment, with assistance and understanding of the management team and supervisors. The program has been driven through the introduction of Fatigue Champions and a comprehensive management plan that includes education, individual health plans and the use of new technologies. Mt Keith has been instrumental in trialling new technology which assists in monitoring fatigue in operations personnel. Insight into these developments is provided in the context of the overall fatigue management plan. The field trials of the OptAlert(TM) system and how it assists in measuring fatigue is explained. The implications for individual operators and the context for a fleet wide approach to fatigue management is also discussed. Mt Keith has recently completed the second phase of trials with the result that this new and exciting technology is being considered for adoption globally across BHP BillitonÆs open pit mining operations.

From 1970 to 1975, approximately forty metallurgical plants throughout the world have adopted automation techniques based on digital controls (see Table 1). Several recent technical reports have described development of digital control systems in concentrator grinding control, 1,2 flotation,3 and smelter operations.4,5

Para tanto um laser do tipo Yb:fibra foi usado em condições de aportes térmicos diferentes. Os resultados indicam uma tendência ao trincamento em várias condições experimentais. No entanto, para os parâmetros de processo utilizados e para as ligas estudadas, observa-se que quando a liga possui entre 0,6% e 1% de silício a sensibilidade ao trincamento diminui.

It is not yet in general use in the mining and ore dressing fields, since most of the requirements in these areas have been for relatively coarse particle sizes. As the need for finer grinding increases - because of different ores, new products, and new values being sought - jet pulverization will, increasingly, be properly used.

Professor H.E.T. Haultain: To me from time to time the urge comes to say the agreeable thing as well as the disagreeable in commenting on the work of others. It is a prerogative of age. I don't apologize. To myself I justify my action as based on a long experience of the matters with which I deal, and I like to tell myself that I have a certain responsibility in such matters on account of my detached position. This Noranda article is a very fine contribution concerning Canadian milling, and I am surprised that no word of commendation or thanks has appeared concerning it in the BULLETIN. There is altogether too much written in these days by men rushing into print, concerning laboratory work, that has not been tied into, nor has resulted in application in the field. The authors of this paper have not rushed into print. The preparation of this paper was evidently an uncongenial task. If the authors had been that way inclined, it could have spread over several lengthy papers. It is an important article because it represents an enormous amount of work in the laboratory and the mill, extending over a period of sixteen years, and resulting in fine metallurgical and economic results with a very difficult and involved problem. It is a fine article because it is so well prepared and presented. It deals with an unusual ore condition, but there is much in it of use to every cyanide millman. It leaves very little room for criticism, though there may be differences of opinion in regard to some of the chemistry phases with which I am not conversant. I am struck by the enormous amount of persistent, painstaking, conscientious research work involved, and in the careful, sincere way in which the methods and difficulties have been described. Persistence and sincerity are the key note of the effort. It should have a good educational effect on the rising generation of millmen, and it should continue for long as a work of reference, and a spur to others. There has been an important by-product, the training and development of the young men engaged in the work. Three of them became superintendents of important mills. One was sought for important work in Africa, another has joined a large research organization in the United States.

DAME Nature was in a generous mood when she distributed widely over the face of the globe numerous deposits of phosphate rock from which man can make phosphatic festiIizer to replace the phosphate re- moved from the soil by crops. The principal deposits are readily accessible to the world's greatest consuming areas and most of them are such that mining operations can be carried on at relatively low cost. The world's known reserves shown in Table 1 are sufficient to last well over 2000 gears at the present rate of consumption. Before giving a brief outline of the phosphate rock industry of foreign countries let us try to get a picture of the movement of phosphate rock throughout the world in 1938, the last full normal calendar year where it came from and where it was consumed. Table 2 shows the origin and finial destination of world shipments in 1938 by grand divisions. Table 3 (p. 499) shows shipment9 of phosphte rock to each country in Europe. Europe is seen to be by far the world's greatest market and the French North African mines the world's most important producers outside of the U. S. A.

Data from experiments and literature on gas and dust explosions in closed vessels are presented to show the effects of the vessel size and shape; the initial pressure, temperature, and turbulence; and the fuel-air ratio and the strength of ignition source on pressure and rate of pressure rise. An attempt is made to correlate some of these parameters with an elementary mathematical model. Analyses of data on 17 vessels--spherical, cubical, cylindrical, and rectilinear in shape--ranging from 0,018 to 905 cubic feet in volume were made. Although the study was initiated to provide information primarily on dust-explosion phenomena, some data were obtained for gas explosions so that the factor of initial turbulence caused by the pneumatic blast used to disperse dust could be evaluated. The mathematical interpretation of the explosion phenomena was in general accord with the experimental data, and correlation was obtained for several factors affecting explosion development. Neither vessel size nor shape affected maximum pressure (when heat loss was neglected). The rate of pres-sure rise decreased as vessel size increased, and the rate was proportional to the ratio of the surface area of the vessel to its volume. Induced initial turbulence markedly increased the rate of pressure rise and slightly increased the maximum pressure. Changes in initial pressure produced proportional changes in maximum pressure and rate of pressure rise. Initial temperature and maximum pressure were inversely related, but initial temperature had little effect on the maximum rate of pressure rise. Comparative experiments showed no appreciable difference in explosion development of gas and dust fuels. The vessels and experimental work are described, and all data are given in tables. The mathematical model will facilitate extrapolation from laboratory to industrial conditions and will allow comparison of results obtained in different laboratories.

"Ever since we have started to assist those responsible for blasting with blast simulation studies, we havebecome aware of an interesting aspect, namely that in 90 % of cases we are asked ‘‘Can you seek ablasting method which gives better fragmentation than the method which we use now’’. But after a visit to the site, and the evaluation of the fragmentation obtained with their present blasting method, it very often becomes evident that it is the ease of mucking and not the fragmentation which requires improvement. Hence we then proceed to do a simulation study the results of which are improved mucking rather then more fragmentation, and those responsible for the blasting always become very satisfied."

This Bureau of Mines report describes a new type of scrubber (dust collector) and ventilation system built into the auger support frame (boom) of a Jeffrey 120L continuous mining machine. With this twin scrubber arrangement, one scrubber is mounted into each side of the boom. Each scrubber includes a 2,500-cfm fan, a flooded fibrous-bed scrubber panel, and a water droplet eliminator. The system was designed for minimum size and adds only a few inches to machine height. Exhaust duct design allows flexibility with various airflow configurations to suit both blowing and exhaust fare ventilation systems and brattice distances ranging up to 20 feet. Full-scale tests with exhaust ventilation were conducted at a Mine Safety and Health Administration surface facility at Bruceton, Pa., to determine the scrubbers' methane dilution capability. Several configurations of the twin scrubber-ventilation system produced striking improvements in face methane dilution when compared with conventional systems.

"The Wadi Dayqah Dam Water Supply Scheme represents one of the most important projects implemented by the Sultanate of Oman to ensure sustainability of water resources. The principal components of the project comprise two dams to impound the Wadi Dayqah, to store and supply drinking water to the local area and to Muscat, the capital city of the Sultanate.The Main Dam with a central spillway is a RCC Gravity Dam with a maximum height above foundations of 75m, crest length 400m; the Saddle Dam is a rockfill dam with central clay core, max height above foundations is 49m and crest length 360m. During construction of the Saddle Dam a key trench was excavated to 10m depth and filled with compacted clay connected to the central core of the embankment. Grouting utilizing cement grout was performed as a single line grout curtain prior to each filling operations. Both Dams are founded on soft Siltstone, Claystone, Sandstone and inter-bedded harder limestone.After construction of the Saddle Dam, once water was in the reservoir it became evident in early 2010 that some seepage was occurring apparently from the right abutment. This seepage became more marked when the reservoir first filled to discharge over the spillway in June 2010. In order to reduce the seepage, additional sealing works by drilling and grouting of a three row curtain up to 80 meter target depth were initiated to supplement the existing single row curtain. Part of this project for the sealing works has also been to drill additional investigation holes to provide more information and confirm extend of the additional sealing works and its limits.Züblin Ground Engineering was awarded the Additional Sealing Works Contract. Whilst Equipment was on Site, the opportunity was taken to carry out drilling and grouting on the Left Abutment of the Main Dam to reduce seepage through that abutment and to install additional standpipe piezometer for future monitoring of seepage patterns.Work on this Contract started on site in January 2013 and was substantially completed in January 2015.At the time of Tender Züblin Ground Engineering propose and Alternative Design in the form of a Secant PileCut-Off Wall, 85m long to a depth of 40m with additional drilling and grouting below the foot of the cut-off which was then included in the contractual scope."

"This contribution presents an investigation of the evolution of shrinkage pores during hot rolling with a special focus on the microscopic mechanism. The reliable closure of pores, which inevitably occur during the casting process, is of crucial technological importance for high-quality hot rolled plate products. Therefore, lab-scale tests were carried out under different typical thermomechanical loadings. Extensive data from optical microscopy was collected before and after deformation. The analysis shows that the average volume of pores evolves similar to the volume of an idealized arrangement of voids in an ideally plastic matrix. The average shape of the shrinkage pores, however, was found to be almost constant during deformation. Even though individual pores exhibit complex morphologies far from any idealized geometries, the overall evolution of a large number of pores is well captured by simple assumptions. In addition to the quantitative analysis, a schematic representation of this counter-intuitive behavior is provided. A simple ‘Gurson’-type void evolution equation was implemented in a three-dimensional Finite-Element model of the industrial hot rolling process. With the help of this mechanism-based process simulation the thermomechanical closure of shrinkage pores during the rolling process has been optimized for a variety of plate products.INTRODUCTION Aluminum alloys of the 7xxx series are widely used in the aircraft industry. They have to meet high quality standards regarding microstructure as well as mechanical properties. For hot-rolled aircraft plates, one of the most important quality requirements is that they are free from pores. Pores, however, are inevitably created during the casting process either due to shrinkage or due to the dissolution of gas from the melt. The pores have to be closed mechanically during the hot-rolling process. Therefore, the mechanism of so-called pore closure or void closure has a high technological relevance for the production of aircraft plates. The behaviour of voids in a ductile matrix subjected to mechanical deformation has been extensively studied, especially in the context of damage mechanics. A recent review (Besson et al., 2010) on modeling methods for ductile damage gives a good impression on how much experimental as well as theoretical effort has been dedicated to the problem of void evolution under mechanical loadings. Although void closure has been studied to a far lesser degree, it obeys to the same general theoretical evolution laws as void growth. The most basic theoretical result is that hydrostatic pressure drives void closure, while hydrostatic tension leads to void growth. The mechanism of void closure depends on the void shape. This is illustrated by the example of a flat penny-shaped void, which under compression obviously closes much faster than a sphere with the same volume. Theoretical models have been developed for the evolution of simplified void geometries, such as spheres or cylinders (e.g. Gurson, 1977), spheroidal (Gologanu et al., 1997) and ellipsoidal voids (Ponte-Castaneda, 1994). In industrial cast ingots, however, the pores exhibit very complex morphologies, which are far from any idealized geometry. X-ray tomography revealed ‘tortuous’ voids in a 5xxx aluminium alloy (Chaijaruwanich et al., 2006)."
