Some months ago the Bureau of Mines began research of a fundamental character on sulphur in petroleum. In the course of this work, the usual qualitative test for sulphur in organic compounds1 was applied to certain oils that were believed to contain approximately 0.5 percent sulphur. No sulphur was found, and, as a check on the qualitative test, the oils were subjected to quantitative determination of this element by the oxygen-bomb method.2 The sulphur content of the oils ranged from 0.10 per cent to 0.50 per cent. This experience led to further trial of the qualitative test for organic sulphur, both on the oils mentioned above, and on common sulphur-containing organic substances. No difficulty was experienced in detecting the element in the latter, but with the petroleum oils the test, as usually performed, could not be relied upon to detect less than 0.60 per cent of sulphur consistently. The use of mechanically polished pure sheet copper for the detection of free sulphur, hydrogen sulphide, and perhaps other sulphur compounds has been recommended.3

The sheet-like NiS-ZnS heterostructured composites were prepared by the microwave hydrothermal. The fabrication of the heterojunctions broadened the range of light response of ZnS. The photoexcited electrons of ZnS migrated to the redox potential of NiS/Ni2S under visible light irradiation, which can facilitate the effective separation of photogenerated electrons and holes in space. The visible photocatalytic activity towards hydrogen production for NiS/ZnS nanosheet heterostructed composites without co-catalyst achieved 0.28 mmol h–1, and the quantum efficiency was up to 18.6% under the wavelength with 420 nm visible light irradiation.

"This paper addresses two primary factors affecting the sustainability of Deep Mixing Methods (DMMs): construction materials and handling of the spoil from wet mixing methods. We examine these factors within a life-cycle embodied energy (EE) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions accounting framework, using the LPV 111 project in New Orleans, LA as a case history. The underlying assumption is that project planning and preliminary design have determined that a DMM is the best ground improvement alternative for achieving the broader aims of sustainable development. While EE and CO2 emissions are direct measurements of environmental impact alone, we illustrate how their minimization can also influence the social and economic consequences of the project. It is recommended that DMMs use lower energy and carbon material alternatives to Portland cement and lime in the binder whenever possible, with preference given to locally sourced materials. Currently available alternative cementitious materials include fly ash and slag, which are waste products from other processes. In addition, recycling the spoil material from wet mix methods on site is recommended. If the material cannot be recycled on site, transporting it to a processing and recycling center for later use as fill is preferred over landfilling. INTRODUCTIONWithin the geotechnical community there is an increased appreciation for sustainability considerations, which are an important component of the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of projects. An assessment of project sustainability includes holistic life cycle thinking, systems analysis, environmental impact assessment, use of safe and benign materials, awareness of local societies and cultures, social equity, protecting human health and well-being, and monetary costs (Abraham, 2006). Since ground improvement is a principal practice domain of geotechnical engineers, it is important that geo-professionals play a role in addressing the sustainability for these projects. In this paper, we illustrate by case history how different materials and methods associated with deep mixing projects can impact overall project sustainability through quantifying project embodied energy (EE) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. EE is defined as all energy consumed to bring something into its present state (Chau et al., 2008; Inui et al., 2011; Soga et al., 2011; Chau et al., 2012). Recommendations are then made for how adverse environmental impacts of Deep Mixing Methods (DMMs) may be minimized, leading to more sustainable geotechnical construction."

A preliminary mineral-dressing study of five samples of East Texas limonitic brown iron ores was conducted as part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop and extend domestic resources of iron ore. The samples were considered to be typical of ore currently being mined and beneficiated by the Lone Star Steel Co. and Sheffield Steel Co. The objective of the research was to investigate those mineral-dressing unit operations that might recover some of the fine iron lost in current industrial wastes or perhaps improve the recoveries when applied to the ores as well. Since current industrial beneficiation practice yields a washed limonite analyzing 41 to 45 percent iron, higher grade concentrates were not sought in this laboratory study. Laboratory investigation included washing and sizing, reduction roasting, and subsequent magnetic separation of the finely ground roasted materials. The results showed that laboratory recoveries of over 80 percent of the iron were possible, for the ores investigated, at concentrate grades comparable to those expected from cur-rent industrial beneficiation practice. The American public has at all times been prone to discuss important questions that call for consideration and adjustment. Debatable subjects upon which sides may be taken always receive unusual prominence, but other questions equally important may be neglected. The real "paramount issue," calling for remedial action, is the ever-increasing number of deaths caused by preventable accidents. This matter demands the attention of the entire American people; the importance of accident prevention can not be overemphasized, and in many phases of American life, especially among the mining and allied industries, far too little real attention has been given the importance of conserving life and limb by accident prevention. ACCIDENTS COMPARED TO WAR AS A CAUSE OF DEATH Harry T. Hoffman, Wyoming labor commissioner, writes the following: It is one of the peculiar complexes of this rapidly moving age that we all stand aghast at the horrors of war and view with appar- ent indifference the greater havoc of industrial peace. Did you ever stop to think that approximately twice as many people were killed by accidents in the United States in 1929, as there were American soldiers killed in the entire period of the World War? Every employer and every worker should be thoroughly aroused over the tremendous toll levied against industrial forces by accidents which are largely preventable and develop a faith in safety efforts that will fire them with a zeal as pronounced as that of their religion or their patriotism. Let us remember safety-first to the end that the workman shall live to enjoy the fruits of his labor; that his mother shall have the comfort of his arm in her age; that his wife shall not be untimely a widow; that his children shall have a father; that crip- ples and helpless wrecks who were strong men shall no longer be a by-product of industry.

It might be taken as the engineer's solution of the case, starting with the assumption that steel is steel, while the tendency for a rail to have transverse fissures may, and probably does, depend, in part at least, on conditions met before it reaches the track. Admitting with the author that "brittleness of fracture in all grades of steel is characteristic of fatigue tests" we may yet look farther back to find out, if possible, why some rails and some steels are more prone to have transverse fissures than others, for it has been found that rails from certain heats of steel developed these fissures under a service which

The various materials utilized in the construction of integrated circuits, and the resultant materials interfaces, are discussed with emphasis on a materials system that is compatible with all types of integrated circuits and minimizes the number of different interfaces. Problems with interfaces may originate in the silicon, on its surface, and between other materials within the integrated-circuit package independent of the silicon. ThE difference between integrated-circuit theory and practice may generally be spelled out in terms of the difficulties in fabricating a desired structure. There are, of course, problems in forming the requisite materials, of the necessary composition and geometry, where needed. A distinct class of problem, however, is associated with interfaces— generally between different materials, but occasionally between regions of the same material. We require that each interfacial system perform its proper electrical, mechanical, and thermal function, and do so in an unchanging manner with time under the most severe operating conditions. In a practical sense, we deal in nonideal systems, such that it is generally not possible to form an interface exactly the way it was intended, even if we allow for a knowledge of the practical limitations of the fabrication system. Another way of looking at this situation is to realize that, when we form a group of interfaces under apparently the same experimental conditions, there are often differences of important consequence between them. Very high-magnification pictures, such as are obtained by an electron microscope, reveal fine structure that often differs over the area of a given sample, as well as from sample to sample. Low-magnification pictures look better, but don't eliminate the problem. The trend towards integrated circuits, and away from circuits fabricated utilizing separate components, is very strong in many areas of electronics. A typical silicon monolithic integrated circuit, still in place in the wafer on which it was fabricated, is shown in Fig. 1. The increased reliability which is being experienced through the use of integrated circuits can, to a large extent, be credited to the reduced complexity of the interface system that is present in the electronic system. A glance at Fig. 1, however, with all of its epitaxial and diffused p-n junctions, and interconnect system, shows that interfaces have been far from eliminated. Fig. 2, depicting a schematic cross-sectional view of a (partial) typical integrated circuit, illustrates in detail the numerous interfaces that occur in this type of structure. Besides the individual circuit elements, there are interfaces for isolation, and, Fig. 3, even a crossover requires a series of interfaces. What has been accomplished, however, irrespective of whether or not the total number of interfaces in the circuit is increased or decreased, is that the variety of interfaces is very much reduced. This is because there are fewer materials involved. Since the expense incurred in an R & D program to improve reliability is pretty much directly proportional to the variety of interfaces involved, it is economically advisable to work with integrated circuits for highest reliability. That is not to say that circuits built using standard components could not be made as reliable as integrated circuits, but that the expense involved because of the more complex over-all interface system would be much greater. High pressure abrasive water jets have been shown capable of cutting a wide range of materials including steel, stone, rock and concrete. Acceptable performance can be achieved using relatively low pressures and expendable abrasives. The cutting head can be made small and abrasive feed systems have been developed that allow reliable pumping of slurries over long distances to supply such cutting heads. These features make abrasive water jets ideally suited to automated control in remote areas.Another major advantage of abrasive entraining water jet cutting heads is that they may be operated safely in potentially explosive environments due to their cold cutting ability. Therefore there are many possible applications for such equipment in mining.This paper gives an introduction to the abrasive water jet process and includes results of trials carried out at BHRA on a range of hard materials. Work is also described which investigated the operational safety of abrasive water jets in explosive environ-ments. In a special environmental chamber, cuts were made on steel and sandstone with atmospheres of methane/air and hydrogen/air, without caypsing ignition.

"Uranium exploration by Eldorado prospectors north of Lake Athabasca began in late 1944 and resulted in initial discoveries in 1946 in the Beaverlodge region with mill production starting in early 1953. The operation was closed in mid-1982 having produced 21,457,947 kilograms U30 8 from the Eldorado FayVerna mine, Eldorado satellite operations and from other district producers on a custom basis.The Fay- Verna mine consists of pitchblende-brannerite orebodies spatially associated with both sides of a regional eastwest structure, the St. Louis Fault. The orebodies in the footwall (Fay) are elongate deposits of two types raking steeply to the southwest along the 50 degree south dip of the fault.One type consists of networks of fractures and veins filled with pitchblende, calcite and quartz in chlorite, epidote-altered mylonitized mica schists and amphibolites of the Middle Aphebian Tazin Group. The other type is comprised of fragments of mylonitized metasomatic quartz-feldspar granite of Late Middle Aphebian age cemented with a matrix of pitchblende, brannerite, calcite and some quartz. The vein networks lie en echelon in the footwall of the breccia ore bodies which, in part, are capped by the mud gouge of the St. Louis Fault; in other places, the breccia orebodies are overlain by basal conglomerates, grits and arkoses of the late Aphebian Martin Formation which itself immediately underlies the plane of the fault.Orebodies in the hanging wall (Verna) are a series of irregular, tabular deposits lying within a tightly overturned syncline of Tazin mica schists, amphibolites and siliceous mylonites. They consist of pitchblende, calcite-filled fractures grouped into zones and deposits displaying stratabound habits within individual rock types.Also described are several Eldorado satellite properties which were significant producers of uranium and which display complementary geology to that in the Fay- Verna mine.In general, uranium deposits in the Eldorado Beaverlodge region are closely related to minor structures associated with major faults. Uranium appears to be best concentrated where the rocks are well mylonitized and brecciated. Pitchblende fills networks of veins and fractures in metasediments and metavolcanics as well as matrix material cementing brecciated, mylonitized granite. All deposits in the Beaverlodge region lie in close proximity to the unconformity between the Martin Formation and the underlying Tazin Group."

Drilling of the second shaft at Texas Gulf Sulphur Co.'s Cane Creek potash operation southwest of Moab, Utah, is perhaps the largest undertaking ever made by private industry in the field of rotary shaft drilling. The new shaft, known as No. 2, is located within the plant area, about 400 ft northeast of the No. 1 shaft. This location within the pillar of the first shaft allowed utilization of a great deal of in- formation gained prior to and during sinking of the original No. 1 shaft, a conventionally sunk 22-ft diam shaft 2789 ft deep. The No. 2 shaft will be used for auxiliary transportation of men and supplies, and is steel lined with a 48-in. ID casing. The top 825 ft of the shaft is in predominantly red sandstone with interbedded shales. From 825 ft to 2800 ft, which is the top of the salt beds, the rock is mostly limestone with interbeds of anhydrite and shale.

This paper reviews the trends in supply and consumption of the principal magnesium compounds in the United States in relation to domestic requirements and world resources. The data are confined to these principal magnesium compounds: Magnesium chloride, magnesium hydroxide, precipitated magnesium carbonate, and magnesium oxide (commonly referred to as magnesia). The properties and uses of magnesium compounds are shown in various chapters of' the 2nd edition of Industrial Minerals end Rocks. 3/ The third edition of this reference is in preparation. A more recent description of properties, uses and sources of magnesium compounds appears in a Bureau of Mines publication.4/ The American Iron and Steel Institute and the Refractories Institute have published comprehensive data on the properties and uses of basic refractories. Many magnesium compounds are prepared by the producers to meet specifications set by individual consumers.

With the feature of finely-dissemination particle and complex mineral composition, oolitic hematite is considered to be the ore dressing difficult problem in the world. Series research on refractory oolitic hematite in Zhangjiakou Area are introduced as following: ore properties?technology mineralogy and mineral processing technology. The survey shows: with the fine grinding of the hematite to a fineness of -0.076mm 95%, obtaining iron concentrates grading 62.74% Fe at the recovery of 46.80% by high intensity magnetic separation- reverse flotation flowsheet; under the three stages intensity magnetic separation,four stages grinding and four stages gravity separation, getting the iron concentrates grading 61.09% Fe at the recovery of 45% using high intensity magnetic separation- gravity separation flowsheet; with roasting temperature of 800°C, time for 75~90min and ore-coal ratio of 11, gaining the iron concentrates assaying 62.74% Fe at the recovery of 87% by roasting- magnetic separation flowsheet. At present, this research is still doing for the target of raising the concentration recovery on the base of high grade concentrate. It is in the hope of fully utilizing the existing hematite resources in Zhangjiakou

A modified push-pull field test and a computer model of cation exchange were developed to aid in evaluating cation exchange parameters prior to in situ mining. Reliable determination of these parameters is essential when modeling restoration of groundwater quality. The field test involves a much larger volume and much less disturbance to the ore sample than is feasible with laboratory measurements. This test can be performed in two or three weeks. It is relatively inexpensive, requiring one injection- production well and two or more wells for collecting samples of leach solution. The use of the model in interpreting test results is illustrated with field data from an in situ uranium mine. Much of the research was performed by the University of Texas at Austin, and was partially funded by the Bureau of Mines.

The adverse effects of clay particles on coal and mineral processing processes such as gravity separation, flotation, filtration, and thickening are well known in the mining industry. In particular, the presence of ultra-fine clay particles deteriorates froth flotation performance, which has been attributed largely to slime coatings that inhibit bubble attachment and to adsorption of the frother and/or collector by the clay particles. The present study was conducted to evaluate the performance of clay binding agents developed by Georgia-Pacific Resins, Inc. in enhancing coal and mineral flotation performance. Mechanical and column flotation tests were carried out using coal and potash samples. Process parameters investigated include slurry solids percentage, impeller rotation speed, binder dosage, collector dosage, etc. Flotation results show that use of GP reagents significantly enhanced flotation efficiency under different conditions. The required binder dosage and conditioning time was about 1 lb/t and 0.5-1 min, respectively. More significant improvements in process performance were observed at higher solids percentage and higher impeller rotation speed.

Experiments at the Somerset mine, Colo., under an agreement between US. Steel Corp. and the US. Bureau of Mines are described. A test was made of the tube bundle method of mine air sampling which was developed for European longwall mines; some 300,000 running feet of tubing provided continuous monitoring at 38 locations. Carbon monoxide concentrations were obtained with standard deviations of less than 1 ppm and oxygen concentrations with standard deviations of less than 0.2%. A base level of CO index (ppm CO evolved per percent 0, removed) was determined to be zero to 20 through most of the passageways of the mine. However, in one working section where the coal was initially hot (about 180°F within a pillar) the CO index was demonstrably higher, 120 trending upward to about 60 when smoke appeared and the section was sealed. The data are discussed in terms of laboratory experiments on CO evolution from coals.

The safety record for explosives in U. S. mining is excellent considering that over 4 billion pounds of explosives are now being used each year. However, blasting accidents remain one of the most serious concerns based on the number of injuries, the injury severity rate and the disaster potential. The Bureau of Mines has been analyzing blasting accident data obtained from the Mine Health and Safety Administration (MSHA) to determine the most frequent causes of mine blasting accidents and to examine trends in blasting accidents. This accident analysis is an update of two previous blasting accident studies conducted by the Bureau and published in 1983 and 1987.

After reviewing the many excellent papers being delivered here, it is apparent that we are all concerned with the same general subjects of commodity agreements, international cartels, and anti-trust problems as well as the impact of governments on resource management and minerals pricing. Accordingly, as a relative newcomer to the mining business, I feel that my most meaningful contribution can be made by taking a more philosophical look at the future of our system of democratic capitalism. Unfortunately, governments the world over seem intent on jeopardizing the high standards of living resulting from the Industrial Revolution and furthered by the emergence of its by-product, capitalism. This tendency is particularly germane to the basic natural resource field, since government regulations, controls, and intervention in mining far exceed even the constraints normally imposed on hard-pressed consumer-oriented businesses. Increasingly, many governments seem to feel that natural resources no longer belong to private individuals but rather are the property of the state to be developed in a regulated manner and usually in a way directly contrary to the functioning of the free market system.

"This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations ni the Unietd States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperating agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CRF) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC)3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.4/The present report presents analytical data for 1,381 samples, representing the products of approximately 75 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were secured during July and the first half of August, 1945. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples – regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 733 samples, 229 items, and 57 brands; premium-price, 504 samples, 197 items, and 56 brands; third-grade, 84 samples, 28 items and 12 brands. Given that piles are composed of different materials and installed using a variety of methods, ASTM D 1143/D 1143M-07 Standard Test Methods for Deep Foundations Under Static Axial Compression is justifiably general so that it has as many applications as reasonably possible. There are aspects of the test setup, the test procedures, and data interpretation for instrumented piles (some of which are specific to augered cast-in-place piles) that are either not discussed in detail in this ASTM standard or are not addressed at all. Specifically, the use of variable time hold times can obscure the shape of the conventional load-deflection curve, as well as, influence the interpretation of the ultimate pile capacity. Unload-reload cycles induce additional non-uniform internal axial loads within the pile which complicate interpretation of the strain gage data and increase the potential for errors. Attempts to maintain a constant top load during the hold period can lead to operational difficulties in taking measurements and are technically unnecessary. Residual load has been shown to develop in cast-in-place piles and can significantly influence the axial load distribution as interpreted from strain gage data. The stiffness of cast-in-place piles has been observed to vary with the measured strain, and a constant modulus, as provided by correlation with the unconfined compressive strength of the grout, may lead to a significantly different interpretation of the axial load distribution.

Industrial-scale test results indicate superior metallurgical performance of column flotation compared to conventional cell flotation for copper cleaning. A technical comparison of bubble generation systems for column flotation is made. Two types of bubble generation systems are considered: the filter-cloth type spargers and the Turbo-Air® sparger, which utilizes an air-water mixture fed to the column through injection tubes. Examples of the improved technical performance available with an external sparger system are presented using data from plant tests conducted for specific applications with several different mineral ores. INTRODUCTION Column flotation is now a valuable unit operation which mineral processing engineers employ in the design and operation of flotation circuits in nearly all mineral applications. The acceptance of columns in the mid- 1980s by the minerals industry was paralleled by a rigorous approach to developing a scientific understanding of the design, scale- up, and operation of column flotation units (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Since then, column flotation has become a standard unit of the cleaning stage in many new mineral concentrator projects and has replaced older mechanical cells to improve process efficiency. The size of column cells has continued to grow from the initial 0.9- to 2.1 -meter diameter range, and it is not uncommon to find column cells today being 2.7- to 3.6-meters in diameter. With the success of the smaller units, the scale-up to larger cells has been proven and demonstrated by the performance of the large-diameter cells (Murdock and Wyslouzil. 1991). The use of columns in flotation circuits has also been accompanied by developments in modelling. control, and optimization of column performance (Lee et al, 1991). The bubble generation system is the heart of the operation of column flotation cells. The most common methods for generating bubbles can be divided into two types: the internal and external spargers. Internal spargers are typically a porous material, such as sintered glass, porous rubber or filter-cloth, or maybe a single- or multi-nozzle sparger. External spargers implies that a gas and a liquid (either water or slurry) are brought into contact outside the column and that mixture is then introduced into the column. Several types of external spargers are available today, and innovative designs for externally mounted air sparging systems have been a significant factor in the successful application of columns.
