The recent development of galvanic cell-type hydrogen sensor for molten copper was outlined. The principle of the sensing mechanism, the fundamental structure of the sensor, and its performance as a process control device are discussed based on experimental work undertaken by the authors. Besides sensors based on usual perovskite-type proton conducting oxide, those using magnesium-doped alpha alumina, which was recently known as a proton conductor, were investigated and the results at the laboratory scale are reported. Considering the excellent sensitivity at high temperature and the stability to the disturbance from the attendant oxygen activity, magnesium-doped alpha alumina was regarded to be a superior material for the sensors used for such purposes.

The top size of particles in the flotation of potash ores, which can be as large as 4 mm, exceeds by far the top size in other flotation plants. It is then understandable that while long chain amines are used in the flotation of fine fractions (below 0.8 mm) of potash ores the coarse particle flotation also requires an extender oil. While new and very promising fluidized-bed flotation machines (e.g. HydroFloat) constitute a significant development in the flotation of coarse particles, in the area of extender oils, as reviewed in 2007 by Strathdee, Gotts and McEachern, there have been no new developments to replace the industry standard asphaltene-based carcinogenic extenders. This situation first of all results from the experimental problems that arise when water-soluble minerals like sylvite are to be tested in saturated brine. Both oils and longchain amines are water/brine insoluble. The oil with the amine dissolved in it can however be emulsified and then used as an extender oil. Such oil droplets must wet KCl particles and the emulsion must be stable to avoid handling problems. In this paper we test the use of the phase inversion technique as a method of studying wettability of KCl particles by the oil in saturated brine, and the effect of amine dissolved in this oil on the wettability. The results show that this relatively simple technique can be used to characterize the wettability of fine KCl particles by the tested oil and to determine the effect of added amine on it, and so it can be useful in selecting proper extender oils.

Since 1978, Syncrude Canada Ltd. has been expanding steadily its oil sand mining and processing capacity while reducing unit energy requirements. At the current rate of ~180 M tonne/year oil sand, the originally adopted Karl Clark?s 80°C version of the Hot Water process would require some 53 PJ (53 x 1015 Joule) heat. If this amount of heat were to be derived from burning natural gas it would cost $369 M/y (at $7/GJ). Fortunately, effective recovery of waste heat from the upgrading operations at the Mildred Lake site obviated the need for water heating with natural gas. The oil sand hydrotransport technology, first utilized commercially in the mid-nineties at Syncrude?s North Mine, reduced slurry temperature from ~80°C to ~50°C, cutting the unit heat requirement from 293 MJ/tonne to 183 MJ/t. However, in the new 100 Mt/year Aurora Mine even a 50°C process temperature would still require 18 PJ of heat energy per year. Only limited quantity of 65°C water could be imported from Mildred Lake site and some waste heat would be available from Gas Turbine Generators. A new, Low Energy Extraction (LEE) process was developed to minimize heat requirements by further reducing process temperatures to 25°C in the slurry pipeline and 35°C in the Primary Separation Vessels (PSV). Unfortunately, when applied to certain ore facies in Aurora, the LEE process yielded disappointing bitumen recoveries, necessitating an increase in slurry temperatures from 25°C to 35°C in the pipeline and from 35°C to 42°C in Primary Separation. In 2004, an Optimized Low Energy process (OLE) was developed and piloted at Syncrude Research using a 2000 kg/hour pilot plant. In the OLE process, most available heat is applied up-front to produce 45°C pipeline slurry at a density of 1.58 kg/l. Once the pipeline conditioning process is completed, the slurry is flooded with cold (10°C) water, resulting in PSV temperature of 34°C. The overall heat and water requirements are the same, or slightly lower, compared to those of the LEE process ? but without the penalty in bitumen recovery. Processing 100 Mt oil sand at 34°C (96 MJ/t), rather than at 50°C (183 MJ/t), will save $61 M/y (@ $7/GJ) and reduce green house gas emissions by ~47 %. The OLE process is currently being implemented at the Syncrude Aurora Mine.

"This paper is based on a statistical analysis of the Smallwood iron ore mine (6). In this mine, the prediction of magnetite is especially difficult because of strong trends. Recognizing the statistical limitations of the sample data, the paper approaches the basic statistical analysis of the magnetite by endeavouring to obtain a first approximation of its sample density function. The knowledge of the distribution of a random variable is essential for several reasons, but particularly: (1) to obtain reliable estimators of the population parameters -for example, mean and variance; and (2) to use these estimators in hypothesis-testing concerning future experiments -sample points and sample intervals."

Of the methods that have been used for studying the chemical composition of coal, attack by reagents has not, in general, yielded much information. Most of the reagents used have been strong oxidants such as nitric acid or Schulze's solution. The use of a milder oxidizing agent, such as air at low temperatures, enables progressive changes in the character af the coal substance to be studied and thus helps toward an understanding of its constitution. British bituminous coals frequently have a banded structure. These bands (of four types) can be separated one from another and have been found to possess markedly different chemical characteristics, even when taken from contiguous portions of the same lump coal. It has been found convenient to give each of the ingredients of banded coal a distinctive name, more or less descriptive of its appearance, and the study of the chemistry of bituminous "coal" in England has resolved itself into a study of each ingredient separately. The coal chosen for this work was taken from the Top Hard seam at East Kirkby colliery, Nottinghamshire, a detailed chemical analysis of which has been recorded by Baranov and Francis.' The banded structure was well marked and the bands could readily be separated. The research was confined to the brilliant vitreous bands (vitrain), the dull hard bands (durain) and the "sooty partings" main); for previous work had shown that the fourth type, to which the name clarain has been given, is intermediate in character, chemically, between vitrain and durain. The method of experiment was, briefly, to draw a slow current of moist air through weighed samples (50 gm.) of the three ingredients, vitrain, durain, and fusain, in the form of powder (through a 60-mesh and on a 90-mesh sieve) contained in glass tubes which could be maintained at a constant temperature during prolonged periods. On short term, planning techniques require more details to ensure feasibility, giving importance to operation constraints and use of available resources. In GUEMASSA (Morocco), the ore mass is mined by cut-and- fill method. Correct organization requires to forecast a few weeks ahead the schedule of blocks to be mined, in order to respect ore quantity and grade constraints. While operating constraints are tackled, feasibility is assumed with an average production capacity suggesting that resources will be available. In ST-SALVY (France), scheduling operations is not possible if not considering account resource allocation. In any stope within the vertical vein zinc deposit, the cut-and-fill method enables to mine each horizontal slice according to various strategies, de- pending how to use manpower and equipment, and selecting among predefined scenarios known as realistic. For KOFFIEFONTEIN (South Africa), the kimberlite pipe is mined by a sub-level-stoping method. To achieve the production target, precise organization over one month is obtained, using on& resources when available and respecting all mining rules. This combined operation scheduling and resource allocation is called sequencing. While following the BONANZA concept, providing a planning- retrieval process, sequencing offers more. Very detailed, it is possible to check the impact of resource parameters and mining rules. The sequencer, like a simulation platform, enables expertise. Each sequencer must be tailor-made to fit to each specific mine. The next challenge is to produce a generic environment.

The Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG) held two workshops in 2019—one in Australia and one in Canada—to discuss processes and methods currently used in the mining industry for stope design and reconciliation. In practice, this work strives to optimise stope performance and aims to maximise ore recovery (minimise underbreak), while minimising dilution (overbreak). One of the key findings from the workshops was that current stope design practices, almost exclusively, rely on some versions of the empirical Stability Graph methods developed in 1980s. Although robust and useful at the feasibility study stage, there are a number of inherent shortcomings with this approach. The Stability Graph’s limitations first lie in that it cannot assess underbreak, which is a very important measure of performance. Furthermore, the method doesn’t consider a number of factors which often have a critical influence on stope stability, for example, drilling and blasting or the presence of faults. Given the current industry standard practice, there is a great opportunity to reinvent the stope design process to optimise performance. A finding of the workshops was that every mine quantifies stope performance in terms of volume reconciliation with a focus on dilution and ore losses, and reconciling metal tonnes recovered from the mill. Many mines further investigate stope performance by looking at individual stope faces and the causes for the deviations between the planned stope shape and the measured cavity. Recent research at the ACG has shown that investigating overbreak and underbreak at a higher resolution is a powerful way to identify the root causes of overbreak and underbreak. Finer scale assessment is achieved using an octree analyses, which effectively divides the relevant stope volume into cubes on the scale of a metre and produces many tens of thousands of data points. The octree data structure and subsequent analysis underpins a data-driven stope design methodology. The ACG is currently developing a design approach based on multivariate modelling methods that can account for the many variables that influence stope performance and forecast stope overbreak and underbreak results. Back-analysing stopes based on octree reconciliation results provides a rich database for training the model. Once the model can achieve reliable forecasting of overbreak and underbreak, an interactive drill-and-blast design will allow for the assessment of different firing strategies to optimise stope performance.

The Inland Feeder project is a critical component of Southern California’s water delivery system, relying on a strategic plan of water transfer and storage to enable the delivery of an additional 650 million gallons of water a day. The Arrowhead West and Arrowhead East tunnels form part of this system, comprising the construction of nearly13 km (8 miles) of bored tunnel under the San Bernardino National Forest. This paper describes the design and manufacture of the 4.88 m (16 ft) diameter precast segmental primary lining that will be used in these tunnels to resist rock loads, and up to 275 m (900 ft) of external hydrostatic head.

"Abstract - Resource modelling is a complex process involving different specialists with relevant experience using a multi-disciplinary approach and the best available technology and reviews by independent auditors. The reliability of the final resource estimate is highly dependent on the quality control exercised at each stage of the process. At each step in the resource modelling process it is necessary to define the specific objectives, the methodology proposed to achieve those objectives and to establish a set of checks and validation tools to assess the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Designation of responsibility and authority for meeting these objectives must also be clearly identified. External audits must also be incorporated to review and validate the implementation of new procedures.Resource modelling is the basis for any economic appraisal of a mining project and includes a number of steps from data acquisition and validation to resource reporting, classification, and risk analysis."

"In July 2004 workers at the ABI Smelter in Bécancour (Quebec, Canada) went on strike. Contingency plan were ready to face the situation and plan was done to operate one potline out of three. Two lines were stopped; keeping in mind the restart on cold metal after the strike was over. The subject to be presented and shared includes a summary of work organization including training, schedule of restart, pot cleaning, pot preparation, crash start method, follow up after crash start, safety and environment. This major project has been a very big challenge. It shows that people involvement is a must and the key success. It is then true to say : ""People who believe in success will work and act in order to get there"" and ""People who don't believe in success will act in such a way to fail"" Then both will prove they were right to think their own way ! Sharing such experience can be interesting because it's a true story and people like true stories."

C.-Observation made after examination of a number of defective gun forgings, together with a history of their manufacture, has strongly suggested that so-called "flakes" and woody or fibrous fractures are not necessarily analogous and are often caused by entirely different conditions. While some flaked bars may show fibrous areas in the fracture, it does not necessarily follow that the conditions causing these areas are the same as cause the fibrous, or so-called laminated, structures so commonly met in gun forgings subject to transverse tensile test; the fibrous structure formed in some flaky bars are merely incidental to the conditions causing the flakes. It is believed that the so-called flakes, or bright silvery spots, are mainly due to inherent physical defects in the steel, which existed at the very origin of the steel, rather than metallographic defects caused by subsequent irregularities in mechanical or thermal treatment. While great care in forging and treatment may, in a measure, tend to overcome the evil effect of the defects, with many heats of ingots, no such precautionary measures are needed to produce perfect forgings- and with such heats of steel it would be impossible, no matter how carelessly handled, to produce intentionally a forging containing the defects commonly known as flakes. It has been found possible, on several occasions, to actually predict flaky forgings from an inspection f the ingot after it had solidified, and in such cases no amount of careful forging or heat treatment would prevent the occurrence of such defects in the forging. The inspection of the physical condition of the ingot, and especially the character of the shrinkage on. the top of the ingot, has been given too little thought and study in this connection.

In the course of the examination, at the BureLu of Standards, of fusible tin boiler plugs for the Steamboat Inspection Service, it became evident that an investigation should be undcrtaken to determine the precautions necessary in the manufacture of acceptable plugs. The results of the tests of these plugs show that their manufacture has improved, though at present not all of the plugs tested are, satisfactory. Table 1 gives the result of tests of some 1500 plugs from about 100 makers. Records of the tests show that several of the makers were able to produce satisfactory plugs with every pouring. The Steamboat Inspection Service has the following specifications for fusible plugs: "Fusible plugs for use in boilers of steam vessels under the jurisdiction of the Steamboat Inspection Service shall be made of bronze casing with the bore tapering continuously and openly from end to end, and filled from end to end with tin not less than 99.7 per cent. pure and to contain not more than 0.1 per cent. of lead and not more than 0.1 per cent. of zinc. The small end of the bore may be countersunk not more than 1/32 in. in depth and width, but no recess, thread, or cavity other than this countersink shall be allowed." Vast mineral resources of copper, zinc, cobalt and gold have been identified off the coast of Papua New Guinea at depths exceeding 2,000 meters. Accessing them in a cost effective manner and without destroying the marine habitat requires overcoming numerous technical and operational challenges. Although there are a number of deep-sea mining operations underway worldwide, the depths encountered are significantly less than will be required to mine these ore deposits. To date, only the oil industry has developed technologies for successfully accessing reserves at depths of 3,000m.

Bentonite deposits are known to occur in Texas within the Jackson group of formations. This group represents the uppermost Eocene age sediments found in the coastal plain area of Texas. It outcrops across this area of the state in a narrow band of some 4 to 20 miles width. The outcrop pattern roughly parallels the present Gulf of Mexico shore line and is some 100 miles inland from the Texas shore, Fig 1. The principal bentonite deposits are found in the areas where this outcrop pattern cuts across the south-central Texas counties of Karnes, Gonzales, and Fayette. In these deposits, the better quality bentonite is found in the lower or bottom layers of the volcanic ash deposits in which they occur. Some of these better quality benton-ite~ develop very light colors upon firing and therefore justify their being classified as "white firing." The deposits in Karnes and Gonzales Counties apparently occur in commercial quantity, whereas the white firing strata so far uncovered in Fayette County have been too thin to be classified as yet as "commercial." A study of the ceramic properties of the weathered ash in Gonzales and Karnes Counties was reported in 1941.' Commercial development of the deposit in Gonzales County, 7 miles east of Gonzales, Texas. was started earlier by the Max B. Miller Co. for the purpose of marketing the material as a bleaching clay, and this operation has developed to very sizable proportions. In recent years, this company has offered a specially selected grade of the Gonzales material as a suspending agent in glaze slips. The white firing property especially adapts the material to use in white cover coat enamels. The strata in the deposit are practically horizontal and consist from top to bottom of approximately 2 ft of soil overburden, 10 ft of brown bentonite, 2 ft of coarse white bentonite, and 4 ft of waxy white bentonite overlying a he grained sandstone. The & being made in the quarry is approximately one-half mile in length. Only the bottom 4 ft of waxy bentonite is being recovered, the upper layers being stripped and wasted, Fig 2. It may appear somewhat surprising that the very bottom strata appears to have been the one most completely altered. To confirm this, samples from top to bottom of the various strata were studied microscopically by R. F. Shurtz. Professor of Ceramic Engineering, University of Texas. His interpretation is to the effect that the lower part of the seam was deposited at a much earlier date than the top, and that the lower part was chemically altered to a considerable extent before the upper part of the seam was laid down. The conclusion to be derived from these examinations may be stated briefly to he that the alteration in these strata or parts of strata has proceeded independently of the alteration in other parts of the strata during a considerable geological period. The presence of gypsum and iron stain throughout all of the strata indicates that alteration is now proceeding more or less uniformly throughout. It is contended that the alteration of the original ash to montmorillonite is not a result of the presently operating processes. A deposit which occurs approximately 7 miles southeast of Falls City and just south of the village of Casta-howa, has been explored and leased by J. R. Martin, of San Antonio. Mr. Martin has conducted mining and marketing operations in bentonite for a period of many years and asserts that the white firing strata found in this deposit occurs in commercial quantities. His pit, which is shown in Fig 3, exposes 2 ft of soil overburden, approximately 5 ft of white bentonite having coarse texture, and approximately 5 ft of waxy white bentonite which in turn overlies a brown sandy clay. Here, as in the Gonzales deposit, the most completely altered portion is found at the bottom of the seam, as per following report of microscopic examination by Mr. Shurtz. Sample No. 1: This sample was taken from the top stratum which is one foot thick. It is grayish in color and it contains visible fossilized plants. The color is probably the result of fine carbonaceous material in the rock. Under the microscope the sample is seen to consist of glass and feldspar; the amount of glass predominating. Both these substances are slightly altered. No montmorillonite or other clay mineral can be identified definitely; however, the products of the slight alteration mentioned are probably montmorillonite or mineral gel. Sample No. 2: This sample was taken from the stratum second from the top. This stratum is fourteen inches thick. The sample is light gray. It shows numerous veinlets of greenish translucent material ranging from one-eighth inches wide down to the limit of visibility with the unaided eye. It has the smooth, sub-conchoidal fracture characteristic of some bentonites. Microscopically the sample consists mainly of aggregates of clay minerals. Determining ventilation system model inputs from the field test work has been produced in the working oil shale mine which has been in production since the early 1970s. At this mine room-and-pillar with drill-and-blast methods are used. The mine has a complicated ventilation system to supply fresh air for the eight mining production areas on the radius of about 12 km. The main purpose of the experimental test works was to obtain data for estimation of an optimum cross-section area for a new ventilation shaft. Experimental test works included measurements of air volume and fan pressure using five different modes of intake air through the ventilation shafts system. Measurements of airway friction factors were obtained during the ventilation surveys to determine characteristic friction factors for the intake airway. The results of the measurements will be used for further air flow simulation processes required for design of new additional ventilation shafts in the oil shale mine. Results of the study can be useful in estimation of frictional pressure drop in oil shale mine conditions.CITATION:Sabanov, S, 2017. As the important potash, the product yield of KCl in winter is low and the resources waste is serious according to the deficiency of collectors, which can be used in this condition currently. This paper studied on the change of contact angle, turbidity, and flotation recovery of KCl particles when different chain lengths, ratios of amines were used as collectors in KCl flotation process to get a new mixed collector. The contact angle values of KCl crystal in its brine solution added different amine collectors were first measured by captive bubble method. The turbidity of brine solutions were then measured by the laboratory turbidimeter at room temperature when different amine collectors were contained. In the end micro-flotation experiment using mixed amine with fixed ratios and ODA as collectors respectively at 5 °C, 23 °C were performed. The results show when the ratio of the mixed amine is DDA- 20%, ODA-60%, C20-20%, the contact angle at KCl surface is the maximum and the hydrophobic state is best. Meanwhile the result of turbidity measurement indicates that the dispersion of mixed amine colloids is better than the ODA collector due to the addition of DDA, which plays the role of frother. The flotation results also prove that the mixed amine is not only fit for the KCl flotation at room temperature but also fit for its flotation at low temperature. This study provides strong technical support to extend the production time of potash business in Chaerhan areas in China.

The first bituminous coal cleaning-plant to use the sand-flotation process1 was placed in operation on Oct. 1, 1925, at the tipple of the East Broad Top Railroad & Coal Co., at Mt. Union, Pa. The general principles governing the design of plants of this type and typical operating results of anthracite sand-flotation units have been previously outlined.2 I will, therefore, confine myself to a description of this particular plant and to some of the elements of design it incorporates. The Original Mt. Union Tipple The plant was installed to transfer coal.from steel narrow-gage cars of 60,000 and 70,000 lb. capacity to standard-gage equipment. The coal was hauled about 30 miles from the East Broad Top field. This coa1, mined by the Rockhill Coal & Iron Co. and other operators, is a low-volatile slow-coking coal with ash of high-fusion point. It is normally a high-grade coal that does not contain an excessive amount of free impurities, but it requires careful handling to secure a fair domestic yield, and, naturally, the need for narrow-gage transshipment increases the difficulty of the problem. The narrow-gage cars were discharged into an 8-car track hopper equipped with two feeders passing the coal to two 42-in. apron intake conveyors. Twin units were installed throughout the original plant, two lump-and-egg shaking screens, two lump picking-tables, two egg picking-tables and two stoker conveyors. The stoker coal was loaded without cleaning. The loading tracks and booms were in duplicate and, with the layout as originally installed, either unit could be run independently, each unit shipping a different class of coal or both units making the same product.

Site inspection is an important component of safety management system. In current practices, the inspectors evaluate the safety condition on a construction site with the assistance of a standardised checklist. However, the checklist emphasizes on evaluating the implementation of safety management system, but provides limited task-specific check items for assessing whether the individual construction tasks are conducted under safe condition and in a safe manner. To address this issue, the research presented in this paper aims to provide safety practitioners with comprehensive and taskspecific safety information to promote effective risk identification and facilitate strategic risk control during site inspection. Specifically, this research first builds a project-specific safety information database, which stores potential risks and control measures for each construction task. The research team then develops a mobile decision support tool to retrieve information from the database and support safer decision-making on site. The tool supports users in two ways: one is to provide daily risk checklists and risk control strategies to guide step-by-step inspection alongside the project schedule; the other is to let users input any safety-related keywords during the safety inspection process and the tool returns relevant safety information by applying text mining algorithms. It is ongoing research. This paper presents an overall research framework and discusses the progress in developing safety database and data retrieval concepts. The outcome of the project will help enhance safety management practices and reduce possible risky working conditions on a construction site.

Explosives are used in the entertainment industry in a wide variety of applications. Live performances such as automobile races, air shows and the like have incorporated the use of explosives into their programs. Even art work has been created employing explosive materials and techniques. The primary entertainment use of explosives, however, remains in motion pictures, television, theater and related fields where it comes under the auspices of special effects. Much of it falls roughly into the category of demolition, though the object being demolished may range from a cigarette in a person's mouth or clothing worn by actors to large objects such as automobiles, aircraft, or boats. This paper will attempt to provide an overview of the materials and methods by which these special effects are created as well as highlight the unique problems encountered in this field and their often equally unique solutions.
