A method for the interpretation of temperature curves recorded in gas producing wells is described. One essen-tial feature of the method is a simple graphical construction which conveniently reflects the amount of gas flowing from a given producing formation. This method, applied in conjunction with the Induction Log and radioactivity logs, is valuable to determine the points of entry of gas and to estimate the over-all thickness of the producing zones and their respective contributions to the total production. The method in particular is helpful in evaluating the effect of fracturing operations. An outstanding result of the application of the method is to bring to the light the relative importance of sand-shale interfaces in the production of gas. The paper is illustrated with field examp1es. INTRODUCTION The electrical logging tools involving conventional systems are not applied in wells which do not contain water base mud (empty holes, or wells filled with oil base mud), because of the absence of electrical connection between the electrodes and the surrounding formations. It is, therefore, common practice in this case to use other methods which do not require the presence of a conductive fluid in the borehole: resistivity log with scratcher electrodes, Induction Log, radioactivity logs, temperature log. . . . Such conditions are encountered in some regions, as the San Juan Basin, N. Mex., where a technique of drilling gas wells, using gas as a drilling fluid, has been introduced in the last two years. By the middle of 1953, an appropriate method for the logging of these wells was devised on the basis of field tests and of theoretical studies. It is the purpose of the present paper to give a description of this method. In these wells the logging operations are performed during the process of gas production, so that the temperatures in the boreholes are strongly affected by the cooling due to the expansion of the gas. On the other hand, a special thermometer, with a high sensivity and a short time constant, has been recently made available, which has enabled much more detailed and accurate recordings of the borehole temperatures than with the conventional instruments. As a result of these two circumstances, the temperature log constitutes the essential element of the method, in making possible the detection of the gas producing zones, the definition of their boundaries, and the estimation of the respective contributions of each separate zone to the total production. The method also involves the radioactivity and Induction Logs, as auxiliary documents. These logs in the present instance are helpful in the determination of the reservoirs. However, the information they give in this respect is limited. This comes from the fact that, due to the absence of the MicroLog and/or MicroLaterolog and of the SP log, the estimation of formation factors and connate water salinities is somewhat conjectural. Furthermore, little help is obtained from the Neutron log for the evaluation of porosity and of formation factor because the variations of gas saturation affect the Neutron log in a way similar to the variations of porosity. A ventilation research study was conducted by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and a cooperating longwall trona mine in the Green River basin of Wyoming in the United States. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air and exchanges between the face and worked-out areas to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. Tracer gas experiments using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6  ) were conducted to describe air movement on the face and in the mined portion of the active panel. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of gases emitted from the face and caved gob.

The Goodfellow Expert Furnace System Optimization Process (Goodfellow EFSOP?) is a proprietary process that uses real-time and continuous off-gas analysis, along with process monitoring to optimize the operation of electric arc furnaces (EAF) for steelmaking. With the exception of off-gas composition, dynamic process measurements within the EAF are not possible due to the harsh operating environment. The Goodfellow EFSOP? system provides a dynamic indication of the operating conditions within the EAF. Continuous measurement of furnace off-gas composition, along with other furnace operating parameters is used to elucidate the fate of chemical energy usage within the EAF including: the evolution of carbon from the molten steel bath; the in-leakage of air into the furnace; the extent of combustion above the molten steel bath and the occurrence of dangerous water-leaks from the furnace cooling system. The ability to measure the process reliably and continuously enables Techint Goodfellow Technologies Inc (TGTI) to implement dynamic process control of combustion within the electric arc furnace and to optimize the overall operation through adjustments to the EAF process based on off-gas measurement. This paper discusses the methodology and results achieved from several recent Goodfellow EFSOP? installations in South East Asia.

WHEN 60:40 brass is heated to 825° C., given a drastic quench to obtain the beta solid solution, and reheated, various changes take place in the structure. Reheating at 200' C. causes a fine, granular, sorbitic structure to appear which has been considered alpha solid solution. These particles coalesce at higher temperatures of reheating, and at 470° C., the alpha forms twins. A further study of these transformations was considered worth investigating.

There are few organic ligands that can adsorb effectively on noble metals, especially gold, in aqueous media. Ligands containing sulfur and nitrogen donors are known to be the most effective. Dithiophosphorous acids, for example, are known to adsorb on gold under certain conditions and these, along with xanthates, are used traditionally to recover gold values by flotation from ores. These compounds, however, are not necessarily selective for gold since most of the associated sulfide minerals are also floated. Monothiophosphorous acids, on the other hand, were recently discovered to float gold values selectively from sulfide-containing ores in a mildly alkaline medium; thus the dicresyl monothiophosphate is now used commercially in a gold flotation operation in the U.S.

This paper is intended to deal merely with the commercial development of some of the principal non-metallic mineral resources in the three prairie provinces- Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Coal is not included in this summary. Building Stone First and foremost, mention may be made of the building stone now being produced at Tyndall, Manitoba. This is a mottled limestone and is declared by experts to be one of the finest building stones in America, both as regards durability and appearance. It has been used very extensively both for exterior and interior work, not only in western Canada, but also in the principal cities as far east as Montreal. The stone is the "'Upper Mottled Limestone", which forms the summit of the Trenton (Ordovician) strata in the Lake Winnipeg basin. Quarries are at present being operated at Garson and Tyndall . The area where this stone is known to be available extends in a north and south direction for a distance of three miles, and the main productive ridge is probably about one half mile wide. The outlook for the future of the industry is extremely promising, as the stone is becoming increasingly popular in Eastern Canada, more particularly for interior work.

A process for the manufacture of high-Btu gas from coal has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The process consists of fluid-bed gasification of the coal, followed by the gas treatment steps of gas purification and methanation. Advantages of the system are that caking coals can be used directly, and more than half of the ultimate methane is made in the gasifier.

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a pure solid-state joining process, which has been widely used in joining aluminum alloys with improved properties. This paper describes a three-dimensional simulation of FSW process, running the ANSYS package of finite element analysis to study the evolutional stress in the butt-welding of aluminum alloy 6061-T6. The model incorporates the mechanical effect of the tool and thermomechanical process of the welded material. The heat source involves the friction between the material and the probe and the shoulder. Thermal history and the evolution of longitudinal, lateral, and vertical stress in the friction stirred weld are simulated. The relation between the calculated residual stresses of the weld and the process parameters such as tool traverse speed is presented. "The extreme depths and consequent expense of drilling and sampling the gold-bearing reefs of the Witwatersrand Basin have resulted in limited data being available for estimation of grade ahead of the mining face. There is, however, a wealth of information from mined-out areas of these deposits. This estimation challenge resulted in the development of a unique method of Mineral Resource estimation.AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) utilizes a technique termed macro cokriging (MCK), which allows for the integration of the limited advanced borehole data with the large chip sample data-sets from the previously mined-out areas by adopting a Bayesian geostatistical approach. The MCK process, in short, is the estimation of mixed support size data together with the application of four-parameter distribution models.The gold value estimation for the Carbon Leader Reef (CLR) on the AGA TauTona Mine is used in this paper as a case study of the process and to demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique through production reconciliation. The current method has been proven over the last 20 years and is now an established part of the Mineral Resource evaluation process within AGA.IntroductionOwing to the extreme depths of the goldbearing reefs at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Witwatersrand operations and the prohibitive expense and time involved in drilling boreholes to the required depth, only limited drilling and sampling data is available ahead of the mining face. Whereas traditional estimation techniques are interpolative, within the Witwatersrand the estimation is primarily extrapolative, with the majority of the data being sourced from the mined-out areas. This significant challenge to estimation resulted in the development of a unique method of Mineral Resource estimation and evaluation."

The last 25 years have seen rapid expansion in the use of helical screw pile foundations and tiebacks for new and retrofit construction of buildings and earth retention structures. An estimated $100 million was spent in 2002 on helical foundations and tiebacks in the United States alone. While design information is available in the literature, information regarding quality control, inspection and performance monitoring is lacking. Recognition of at least one manufacturer's helical foundation material by the Uniform Building Code, Standard Building Code, and BOCA (all three codes now combined into the ICC International Building Code) has given added urgency to the dissemination of reliable and practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures. This paper describes a set of such procedures that have been followed for 17 years by engineers experienced in the industry who have directly installed or been involved in the installation of over 140,000 helical foundations and tiebacks in divers soil conditions for various types of structures, including earth retention structures. Topics covered include design responsibility, building code listings and requirements, manufacturer ISO certification, manufacturing process, material and installation specifications, installation contractor certification, field placement, installation procedures, field inspection, building code inspection and performance monitoring. The paper concludes with a step by step example of practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures on a typical helical foundation project.

THE CHAIRMAN (ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.).-Any information likely to throw light on the constitution and proper treatment of high-speed steel in order to obtain maximum results, should surely he welcomed. All users of high-speed steel, I believe, will agree with the authors that, in order to obtain satisfactory results, it is not sufficient to heat all brands of high-speed steel to one and the same temperature; apparently very slight differences of chemical composition seem to call for marked differences in temperature. I think that all of us agree that a properly treated piece of high-speed steel should have a fine austenitic or polyhedral structure and that an appreciable quantity of free carbide may be present in the case of very high tungsten steels. What we seem to lack is a satisfactory method, quick and reliable, of ascertaining when the proper structure has been obtained. I think Mr. Bellis' paper is a step in the right direction. To the untrained eye, however, it is not an easy matter to select from some of his photomicrographs the one representing the best structure; for instance, in the case of steel A, we wonder why temperatures of 2,250 and 2,300 do not yield the same results, seeing that both structures are apparently alike, and the same might apply to some of the other samples. I have no doubt, however, that the experienced observer is capable of detecting structural differences that are not made plain here and by which he is able to select the proper quenching temperature. J.-On page 68 the authors say that the use of a barium chloride bath to eliminate this difficulty has the disadvantage that the surface of the tool becomes decarbonized." I would like to ask whether they actually found that the surface was decarbonized, or whether they base this conclusion on softening alone? A. E. BELLIS, Springfield, Mass.-No, we have never demonstrated that it was a decarbonization, it is just the softening of the steel. The addition of ferrocyanide to the ferrochloride bath has been suggested. I think that is not altogether satisfactory, because the ferrocyanide bath changes composition very rapidly at these high temperatures, and it would be just a question of luck whether or not it had too much or too little ferrocyanide in the bath giving equilibrium with the carbon content.

"Thanks in great part to the geology of the New York City Metropolitan area, mini-caissons are a popular choice for deep foundations. These drilled elements are readily available, easy to install with minimal impact on adjacent structures, and can be designed with large compressive and tensile capacities. Despite the frequency with which they are employed, the engineering design community is divided over several of the underlying principles governing the design of mini-caissons. This paper seeks to draw attention to several of these issues in an effort to encourage further research and discussion, namely: (1) how the allowable stresses have changed for the NYC Building Code over time, (2) the inconsistent load transfer mechanisms considered for geotechnical capacity, and (3) the role of the permanent steel casing towards structural capacities of mini-caissons.INTRODUCTIONIn the local construction nomenclature, mini-caissons are drilled deep foundation elements which derive their capacity from a socket in rock. A permanent steel casing (commonly between 7- and 24-inches in diameter) aides the drilling through overburden soils to the top of bedrock. Afterwards, an uncased rock socket is drilled into the bedrock and the inside of the casing and rock socket is inspected by means of portable video equipment. After inspection, the interior of the socket and casing is filled with steel reinforcement and concrete or grout. The casing-soil interface is generally ignored for axial design purposes and the full geotechnical compressive or tensile capacity is assumed to be generated in the rock socket. Figure 1 shows a typical mini-caisson cross section.Mini-caissons have been used for decades in the New York City area for a number of reasons. They have historically been proven to develop high axial capacities in the city’s metamorphic rock (Tamaro et. al. 2000), often exceeding 300- to 500-tons. Additionally, their method of installation (drilling) is generally able to bypass layers of dense Glacial Till, boulders, and manmade fill which would interfere with the installation of other pile types (e.g. driven piles, auger cast piles). Further they are able to extend to depths exceeding 50-ft to reach bedrock underlying a site, making them a useful tool in areas where rock is relatively deep or varied in elevation. Drilled casing installation also results in fewer vibrations and disturbances to adjacent structures and can occur in areas of restricted access (a constant concern for any project in a dense urban environment such as NYC)."

In the mid-1950s the importation of foreign oil began to encroach on traditional coal markets such as railroad steam engine fuel, home heating, electrical generating plants, and others. Many of the smaller coal companies with substantial coal reserves subsequently found that they could no longer continue to mine economically and merged in various ways with larger established coal mining concerns. As the seats of top management and authority were removed from the mines to large metro centers such as New York, Pittsburgh, and Chicago, the more personal relationship between mine workers and management that had existed prior to these mergers began to be eroded and replaced by " remote control " mine management. The disappearance of this face-to-face contact of upper management with mine employees tended to create barriers blocking simple effective communications between coal mine management and labor. In examining the human relations aspects of the coal mining industry, many elements, some concerned with work and others not, have depicted the industry as almost devoid of good applied human relations and communications practices, and, in truth, little has been done to alleviate this situation. In past years many coal producing companies, with the exception of one of the largest, failed to adequately define the term "communications" as it applied to their companies, whether internally or externally. Internally many still place heavy reliance on written communications such as company-wide newspapers to do the job of communicating with their employees which they feel ought to be done. One company puts an inordinate belief in its company "newspaper" as the primary instrument to stimulate its work force into increasing productivity. Primarily aimed at the workers, who greatly outnumber the salaried administrative people, this publication mainly documents the fortunes of individual mine workers who are felt to have achieved something with their lives, e.g., a mine worker who had managed to put four children through universities, the philosophy behind this being to inspire other workers to achieve worth- while goals.

Samples of silver and Ag-O alloy, 0.12 wl pet, have been undercooled to a maximum of 250°C by melting in a slag of commercial soda-lime glass. Grain refinement occurred in undercooled silver samples whet the degree of undercooling exceeded a critical value which varied from 153° to 175°C, depending on the melting conditions. In under cooled Ag-0 samples, the grain structure was fine and equiaxed at degrees of undercooling larger than 50oC. The grain refinement in both silver and Ag-0 alloy samples was the result of recrystallization during or immediately following freezing. When the oxygen content was increased, the degree of undercooling at which recrys-tallization occurred decreased. INVESTIGATIONS of the grain structure of strongly undercooled melts of nickel and cobalt1-4 have revealed a change in room-temperature grain size as a function of undercooling. At large degrees of undercooling the grain size was fine, but samples undercooled by smaller amounts exhibited a much coarser grain structure. The reported undercooling at which this grain size transition occurred in nickel varied between 140° and 175'C undercooling. Walker1 attributed this grain size change to an enhanced nuclea-tion rate. Cavitation at a melt-solid interface was con sidered to generate a high-pressure wave. This, in turn, produced nucleation in the liquid as a result of an elevated freezing point increasing the undercooling in the melt. A similar grain size transition was observed in undercooled silver between 133° and 153°C undercooling.5 The grain size transition in undercooled silver was found to be dependent on oxygen con tent. More recently, the authors5 showed that a simila transition occurred in an undercooled Cu-O alloy, =0.08 pet, but not in oxygen-free copper undercooled more than 200°C. The transition was attributed to recrystallization of the solidified grains after freezing; the greater the degree of undercooling, the more complete the recrystallization. In view of this effect of oxygen content on grain size transition, additional undercooling experiments were carried out with silver. This paper reports the results of these studies on silver and Ag-O alloys undercooled more than 50°C EXPERIMENTAL 1) Materials. The silver was supplied by Matthey Garrett Pty., Ltd., as fine granulate, silver mini' mum 99.9 pet, and contained the trace impurities shown in Table I. The silver originated from two different refineries resulting in the difference in impurity content shown in Table I. However, the variation in composition had no discernible effect on the undercooling behavior. Samples of the silver were melted in an open-ended, vertical, cylindrical resistance furnace, wound with Kantha] wire, the temperature of which was adjusted by means of a variable transformer, 2) Melting and Undercooling. Bulk samples of silver were undercooled by preoxidation and removal of oxidized impurities in a glass slag, as previously described,5 but special precautions were necessary to allow comparison between oxygen-free silver and a Ag-O alloy. Samples free of oxygen were prepared by first melting weights of granulate varying from 200 to 400 g in clean vitreous silica crucibles in air for approximately 15 min. A sample was frozen and a complete glass cover formed over the top surface by adding granulated glass rod. The sample was then melted and frozen several times until no oxygen bubbles appeared in the glass slag. Subsequent thermal analysis indicated that the oxygen content was negligible. The glass acted as an efficient barrier to absorption of oxygen from the air. Ag-O alloys were prepared by melting silver in silica crucibles with only a partial cover of glass, so that the top surface of the melt was in contact with air. The silver was held molten in air for several hours at 1000° to 1050°C, in the expectation that the oxygen in solution would reach equilibrium with atmospheric oxygen. At T - 1000°C the equilibrium oxygen content was calculated as 0.12 wt pet O, using Sieverts law and Eq, [l], derived by Mizikar et a!.7 from the data of Sieverts and Hagenacker8 for 1 atm of oxygen:

In the exploitation of porphyry-type deposits, the quality of the ore is mostly defined according to its grade. Besides the simplest distinction, ore-waste, several grade categories may exist and they correspond to the different ways in which the ore is further processed. At the time of mining the selection of the different categories is done from extensive information available from blast holes. But planning has to be done before this information is available and it is necessary for the geologist to forecast, from exploration and development data alone, the possible outcome of the selection done later on a block, a level, or the whole deposit and ultimately predict the ore reserves and value of the deposit. A good statement of this problem has been presented at the 1976 AIME annual meeting by Williamson and Hueller (1976). They have shown that, if the cut-off values are directly applied to the estimated grade of blocks, a gross overestimation of the recovered tonnage of ore (14%) will occur. This problem, now termed "the vanishing tons problem" (DaVid, 1977) seems to be common in many open-pit operations and it has been explained several times (DaVid, 1972; Huijbregts, 1975). In order to solve it l.Jilliamson and Mueller proposed a solution based on compiling masses and masses of blast hole data available from mined-out portions of the deposit. They derived empirical correction factors which provide for every block, given its estimated grade, the expected tonnage and average -grade of each category of material within that block. The purpose of our work is to repeat the same exercise but ignoring the blast holes data i.e. we want to derive the correction factors from the only DOH data. Doing this, we are more in the real conditions where the valuation of the mine and are reserve analysis has to be made before production actually starts. Developing a laboratory procedure for the determination of coal-seam compressive strength has been a subject of discussion for many decades, and the reliability of laboratory determinations is often the subject of debate. A coal seam’s characteristics, the method of sample collection, the specimen preparation method and the testing procedure can often result in drastic variations in the test results. In this paper, the development of a laboratory testing procedure for the determination of coal-seam compressive strength is presented. Two samples that were collected from different coal seams were tested in this study. First, the inherent characteristics, i.e., coal structure. Hardgrove grindability index (HGI), Slake durability index, proximate analysis and mechanical properties (Young's modules and Poisson's ratio), of each coal were determined. The results were used to categorize the coal scams in terms of the characteristics liable to produce variable strength data in typical laboratory tests. Second, two commonly used laboratory specimen shapes, cylindrical and cubical, were tested to determine which shape produced the most reproducible strength values. Third, four loading rates within the static testing range, i.e., 0.007, 0.07, 0.34 and 0.7 MPa/s (1.0, 10, 50 and 100 psi/sec), were used to determine the ideal loading rate. Finally, the number of test samples required to produce strength data within the acceptable standard deviation, considering coal seam characteristics, were established. Background Laboratory testing of coal specimens for the determination of seam compressive strength has been a subject of discussion since the early 1900s. Many researchers have tested coal specimens to estimate coal-seam compressive strength for use in pillar design to insure the safe operation of [ ] mines (Unrug et al., 1986; and Hirt et al.. 1992). Yet, there is a lack of a universal procedure, and, no matter which approach is used, it becomes the subject of intensive debate. A great deal of work has been performed on the subject, and there is much information available in the literature. Some of this work concerns quantifying the influence of specimen shape and size on compressive strength (Bieniawski. 1968: Barron et al.. 1992: Khair and Xu 1994; and Khair 1994). As indicted in the literature, coal is a heterogeneous material, consisting of discontinuities such as cleats and bedding planes, which are likely to produce variable strength results (Holland, 1964; Unrug et al., 1986). The methodology of quarrying changed significantly in the Indiana limestone industry in the 60 years between Sept. 11, 1941 and Sept. 11, 2001. The former was the date of the Pentagon groundbreaking ceremony, while the latter was when the building was damaged by American Airlines Flight 77. So too, though to a lesser degree, did the machinery and methods used to fabricate the stone. The rededication ceremony on Sept. 11, 2002 marked the end of the Phoenix Project, as the rebuilding effort was named. The story of this remarkable project illustrates what the American construction(and Indiana limestone) industry can accomplish when working toward a common goal.
