The methane emissions from an advancing coal mine section were continuously monitored for 120 days. During this time, the section advanced 2,000 feet into virgin Pittsburgh coalbed producing 54,565 tons of coal with a total methane emission of 91 million ft3. Analysis of the data gathered showed that daily methane emissions did not correlate with overburden thickness and daily coal production. A good correlation was found between the daily methane emission and the average length of rib exposed to virgin coal.

Yucca Mountain Overview The U.S. Department of Energy?s Yucca Mountain Project is a geologic repository project designed to receive, handle, package, transport, and emplace spent nuclear fuel and high level radioactive waste. The planned repository would be located in Yucca Mountain on the western edge of the Nevada Test Site, about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and would include both surface and subsurface areas. Yucca Mountain rock formations consist of successive layers of volcanic rocks (called tuffs) approximately 14 to 11.5 million years old, formed by eruptions of volcanic calderas to the north. With the volcanic rock the potential for methane emission is not an issue and the subsurface repository is a non-gassy (methane) classification. This paper will provide a summary of the development ventilation system design that provides fresh air for subsurface construction activities, and the emplacement ventilation system design that removes heat generated by the waste packages. The subsurface layout, illustrated in Figure 1, contains 108 emplacement drifts, one Performance Confirmation(PC) observation drift, nine intake/exhaust shafts, and three access ramps. The existing Yucca Mountain facilities, shown in bold lines in Figure 1, include a 7.8 km long, 7.62 m (25 ft) diameter U shaped tunnel that is formed by the North and South Ramps at both ends of the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) drift and a 1.5 km long, 5.0 m (16.4 ft) diameter Enhanced Characterization of the Repository Block drift (ECRB) that were constructed from 1994 through 1998. These drifts were used for site characterization activities and have been incorporated into the subsurface repository configuration. The unexcavated perimeter access main and exhaust main drifts are typically 7.62 m (25 ft) diameter TBM excavations and the emplacement drifts are 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter TBM excavations. The turnouts leading into the emplacement drifts are to be excavated by either mechanical, or drill and blast methods and serve as the launch chambers for the emplacement drift TBM excavations.

"Epithermal Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag-Au quartz-carbonate-barite veins at the Silver Queen mine near Owen Lake, west-central British Columbia, are hosted by Late Cretaceous Tip Top Hill andesitic volcanic rocks. The veins form a rectilinear northwest-northeast pattern that differs slightly from regional structural trends. The main northwest-trending veins are oriented very close to the trend of regional northwest faults, but the crossing veins tend to be more east-north-easterly (070 degrees)compared to a regional north-easterly trend (040 degrees). The character of the veins suggests they are extensional features formed by dextral slip related to Paleogene oblique subduction, or intrusion of magma at depth, or both.In detailed exploration at the mine, the veins cannot be modelled as simple tabular sheet-like bodies. Instead, they are complex structures that divide and rejoin, forming multiple veins or stringers, or are found in shear zones as replacement features with quartzsericite- clay-carbonate-pyrite alteration haloes of variable width that make definition of vein margins and correlation from hole to hole ambiguous. In addition, individual veins within each of the main structures have en echelon characterboth along strike and down dip.Geological and assay data must be carefully studied to define the margins of these complex veins before any estimation of ore reserves may be made. Where multiple veins occur in a section, ore/gangue mineralogy, assays, character of wallrock alteration, and thickness of vein and mineralized hangingwall, median and footwall zones must be used to evaluate continuity of mineralized structures. Well-defined sections are projected into areas of increasing complexity. Once the vein boundaries are defined, metal concentrations, important metal ratios(Au/Ag, Pb/Zn, Cu/Zn), and true thicknesses of the vein provide the basic data for reliable ore reserve estimation."

In 1991, roofbolts were introduced as a primary support for inseam retreat longwall entries at CBDC's Phalen Colliery. Increasing mine depth (+550 m) necessitated replacing conventional inseam steel sets in these entries because they were being severely damaged during wall retreat and subsequently causing gate end problems. Roofbolts had been used in the Sydney coalfield between 1949 and 1963 in room and pillar working, however, some concerns arose with using roofbolts as a primary support in long (2.2 - 3.4 km) single entry roadways. In order to alleviate these concerns, a phased approach was adopted whereby conventional steel densities remained along with roofbolts. The roofbolt design was such that the roofbolts would be the primary support and the steel sets would experience little or no loading. A detailed geotechnical monitoring program was developed by both CBDC and the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratories technical staffs. The results of this monitoring were used to build-up confidence in roofbolts and subsequently reduce the steel set densities until eventually only roofbolts were used as a primary support. This paper will discuss briefly the phased introduction of rootbolts at Phalen Colliery and more specifically the development of geotechnical data collection and interpretation.

National Societies Our first joint activities were in collection with the celebration of the eightieth birthday of "Uncle John" Fritz in 1902, and it is of interest to note that two of the members of the original celebration committee, Messrk. . Ambrose Swasey and Jesse Merrick Smith, will be members of the official deputation to England in June. Mr. Rice, also,' was .a member, of the original committee.

In continuation of the study of thermodynamic properties of the common interoxidic compounds of ferroalloy elements, this report gives the results of low-termperature heat-capacity measurements and entropy evaluations of the monotungstates of sodium, magnesium, and calcium. Previous reports4 5/ of this laboratory dealt with low-temperature heat capacities, entropies, and heats of formation of the sodium vanadates. Heat-capacity measurements of the monotungstates of sodium, magnesium, and calcium (Na2W04, MgW04, and CaW04) were conducted throughout the temperature range 51° to 298° K. The entropies at 298° K. were evaluated and then combined with entropy data for the elements and oxides to obtain entropies of formation. This information is an essential part of the data needed for thermodynamic appraisals of chemical reactions of these substances. No similar data for any tungstate are to be found in the literature.

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 5-acre Zwagg Island Wilderness Study Area (OR-12-14) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Curry County, OR, immediately west of Brookings. There is no evidence of mining activity on or near Zwagg Island, and no mineral resources were identified. The steep-sided, flat-topped island is normally accessible from the mainland by way of a sandy beach. The island consists mainly of marine sandstone, mudstone, and conglomerate of the Jurassic Dothan Formation. Dothan Formation sandstone has been used locally as construction material. Rock along the coast has also been used for construction of jetties to improve harbor access; additional work has been proposed at the port of Brookings. Although suitable for other construction uses, stone from Zwagg Island would probably not meet physical requirements for jetty stone. Development of a stone resource on the island is unlikely.

Timber support of mine openings continues to be an effective system for ground support, due to its avail¬ability, flexibility, and ease of installation. Timber support of mine openings as a primary method to support loose rock has been replaced to a large extent by rockbolting and by filling systems. How¬ever, the many designs of square-set timber and varia¬tions of crib and stull support that have been developed to suit many stope configurations have proven reliable over many years of application. Integrated in modern excavation and stoping methods, timber remains an im¬portant ground support material for today's mines. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TIMBER SYSTEMS Timber, when used as a part of the total support system, is recognized for its unique support properties. More than a cover to prevent minor falls of ground, timber systems have been carefully designed to provide adequate support with sufficient compressive qualities to achieve a safe working environment in extremely diffi¬cult ground conditions. In some cases, a timber support method is designed to yield while retaining its protec¬tive support qualities. Little or no initial investment in equipment or plant is required for incorporating timber into the mining support system. Low cost cutoff saws and portable chain saws are sufficient equipment for effective use of dimen¬sioned (sawed) or round (stull) timber support. Until recently, small sawmills of various complexity were com¬mon at mine surface plants. Sawmills at the mine sites have generally been replaced by timber vendors' mills. Suppliers have been able to use efficient cutting and lumber handling methods to reduce the cost of mine timbers. Most suppliers will package dimensioned mine timber into bundles that are suitable for handling down mine shafts and on level conveyances. The principal disadvantage of timber as a support method is higher material cost and labor cost associated with its labor-intensive installation. Furthermore, stand¬ing timber reserves of mine quality wood are in short supply in some areas, and heavy competition exists for alternative uses of the timber supplies. Vendors are reluctant to supply large cross section dimension tim¬bers relatively free of defects. Some mine operations require 4.8-m (16-ft) lengths of firm timber over 0.09 m2 (144 sq in.) in section and these are difficult to obtain in large quantities. APPLICATION OF TIMBER FOR MINE SUPPORTS Timber used in mine support has been cut from many species of trees. A firm hardwood with physical properties similar to western Douglas fir has been pre¬ferred in the US. Other harder and softer woods, how¬ever, have been used when readily available or where the specific strength or crushing quality of the wood is a desired specification of the support system design. Hard¬ wood, commonly oak, has been used where maximum crushing resistance is required. Mahogany and fir are widely used for shaft guide timber. Normally, timber is used with its core axis parallel to the long axis of the timber dimension. However, in some cases, it is placed normal to its core in a "butt" log position, so as to provide maximum resistance to abrasion of the ore passage adjacent to the cut end of the block. By selective placement of timber block¬ing, controlled resistance to ground closure can be achieved which will prevent early failure of primary sup¬port members of the timber structure. Timber is widely used in modern mining operations as a construction member for chute-lip support. These designs are tailored to each operation to conform to the dimensions of the haulage equipment being used. As a construction material, wood requires none of the spe¬cial equipment necessary for placement of concrete or steel support. Placement of these alternate support ma¬terials requires carefully dimensioned and engineered excavation for their installation. Wood can be easily sawed to fit on location. The successful use of timber in heavy ground de¬pends on the careful and accurate placement of block¬ing and bracing to achieve the controlled yielding re¬sistance needed to support the mine opening. Similarly, frequency, size, and placement of top and bottom block¬ing stulls in flat-bedded deposits are carefully determined to provide adequate support at the mining face. Con¬trolled caving through failure of the stulls may be required as the scope retreats from the earlier mined-out sections. The support program must achieve both of these dimensionless qualities by specification of stull frequency and size. The utility of the square set-system of ground sup¬port and timber support is described in Chap. 2, re¬printed from US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6691. Four examples of effective use of timber for support of stoping and other mine openings are pre¬sented in other chapters in this section. The Gilman mine's use of Mitchell slice stoping described in Chap. 3 is an early modification of the square-set mining system. This application proved reli¬able for heavy ground and overcame some of the dis¬advantages of conventional square-set timber. Chap. 4 describes the Burgin mine's use of timber with other reinforcement material. This combination of materials achieved high strength and control with yielding com¬ponent members necessary for heavy, squeezing ground. Chap. 5 describes the Bunker Hill mine's use of square¬set timber in a new configuration that provides an effi¬cient and safe support for stoping using small load¬haul-dump (LHD) mobile equipment. "The results of a chemical and mineralogical study of eighteen opaque-oxide occurrences are discussed and the detailed chemical, metallurgical and mining feasibility study of a vanadium-rich magnetite deposit is summarized. A plot of the mol-percentages in the system FeO- Fe2O 3-TiO2 indicates that the deposits fall into two distinct groups: some contain hematite with ilmenite, and some others have magnetite with ilmenite (titaniferous magnetites). The plot also suggests that the two types of deposits were crystallized from liquids of different compositions. Each group has its distinct structural features. Vanadium is present in all of the studied specimens, however concentrations of economic importance have so far been found only in the titaniferous magnetite deposits. The vanadium content of the oxide concentrations of the Dore Lake Complex is the largest among the studied occurrences. Analyses of the concentrates of the drill-core sections show a compositional variation across the orebody; a continuous increase in the tenor of Ti02 and a decrease in the vanadium content upward in the layered sequence is found. Concentration tests on several tons of samples indicate that about 80 per cent of the vanadium is recovered in the magnetite concentrate."

The evaluation criteria for cost comparison of the Gearless Drive, also called Ringmotor or wrap-around motor, as variable-speed drive with a Twin Drive System using synchronous motors are reviewed. Both mechanical and electrical components of the drive system are considered. The evaluation criteria are described and for the cost comparison the applicable method is demonstrated. The cost comparison is based on a medium and large sized mill system. Each drive package will display cost details with regard to capital cost, maintenance, power losses, overall efficiency, overhead and loss of production. As conclusion the benefits and disadvantages of the two drive/mill packages will be presented together with a payback diagram.

Differences in the electrical conductivities of copper powder sintered under reducing, selectively oxidizing, and neutral atmospheres are related to impurities in solution or as precipitated oxides. The precipitation of impurities as oxides during sintering in nitrogen is proposed for maximizing the conductivity of sintered copper. Conductivity equations for two-phase systems are summarized. Selected equations are applied to porous sintered copper and composite structures. A recent review of the influence of impurities on the electrical conductivity of copper by Gregory et al.1 emphasized that an impurity in solid solution has a much more pronounced effect on reducing the electrical conductivity than when present partly or wholly as a second phase. When impurities in solid solution can be precipitated as oxides, the copper is purified with respect to these elements and the conductivity is increased. Cast and wrought copper, therefore, frequently contain an intentional residual oxygen concentration to oxidize and precipitate impurities less noble than copper. Copper powders generally also contain impurities which can contribute to a reduction in the electrical conductivity of the sintered material. The most deleterious impurities commonly found in commercial copper powders which markedly decrease the electrical conductivity when in solid solution but which can be precipitated as oxides include iron, tin, antimony, arsenic, cobalt, and nickel. In addition to impurities, porosity in sintered copper also contributes to a reduction in the electrical conductivity. The work reported herein discusses the influence of impurities, sintering atmospheres, and porosity on the electrical conductivity of sintered copper. These are important factors for controlling the electrical conductivity of materials such as sintered copper electrical contacts. Several publications on the electrical conductivity of sintered copper and composite materials with random pores or obstacles have incorrectly considered the conductivity to be proportional to the volume fraction of conducting material. However, analyses and equations have been proposed, the earliest of which is perhaps Lord Raleigh's of 1892,' which more accurately describe the conductivity of two-phase systems. These equations which in many cases allow one to closely estimate the electrical conductivity of porous sintered materials and two-phase composites will be reviewed and related to the measured electrical conductivity of sintered copper, copper-graphite. and Ag-W composites. INFLUENCE OF IMPURITIES AND OXIDIZING, REDUCING, AND NEUTRAL ATMOSPHERES Zone-Melted and Leveled Copper. The electrical conductivities of an electrolytic copper and a lower-purity compacting grade of copper powder after consecutive treatments in reducing or selectively oxidizing atmospheres are compared in Fig. 1. The powder and drillings from the electrolytic copper ingot were melted and solidified in a graphite crucible under hydrogen. The vertical zone leveling technique of multiple passes in opposite directions was used to obtain a uniform distribution of impurities. The electrical conductivity was measured on machined specimens 3 by 0.10 in. diam of the zone-leveled material and after the same specimens were consecutively treated as follows: 1) heating in hydrogen at 1600°F for 3 hr; 2) heating in air in a sealed tube so that 0.04 pct 0 was introduced; heating was started at 1000°F for 1 hr and continued at 1800°F for 8 hr; the stepwise diffusion treatment was used to avoid loss of copper due to evaporation of copper oxide at higher temperatures; and 3) final heating in hydrogen at 1600°F for 3 hr. A L&N Kelvin Bridge, type 4306, and a test fixture with knife edges 2 in. apart were used to measure the room-temperature conductivity with an estimated accuracy of ±0.5 pct. In all cases the conductivity of the electrolytic copper was approximately 100 pct of IACS. The conductivity of the impure copper was 80 pct of IACS both in the cast state and after heating in hydrogen. However, after the heating in air, the conductivity of the impure material was 100 pct IACS. After again heating in hydrogen, the electrical conductivity decreased to 60 pct of IACS. This decrease is attributed both to the dissolution of impurities and observed intergranular cracks due to the phenomenon of hydrogen embrittle-ment in copper. These data show that the electrical conductivity of commercial copper as represented by a compacting type powder can be increased significantly by the precipitation of impurities as oxides through heat treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere. Sintered Copper Powder. A commercial compacting type of copper powder pressed to various densities was sintered either in nitrogen, dissociated ammonia, or dissociated ammonia followed by a selectively oxidizing atmosphere of air in sealed Vycor tubes so that 0.06 pct O was added to the material. The electrical conductivity was measured perpendicular to the pressing direction on as-sintered specimens of approximately 3 by 0.25 by 0.15 in. Carbonizing properties of the principal coal beds of Perry County, Ky., are described in this Bureau of Mines report. Seven samples, representing the Hindman, Flag, Haddix, and Fire Clay beds, were carbonized by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method, and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined. Carbonizing properties of blends of Flag and Fire Clay coals, with 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 low-volatile coal from McDowell County, W. Va., also were determined. Expanding properties of the Flag and Fire Clay coals and their blends were determined in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. The Perry County coals tested are high-volatile A bituminous in rank and, with the exception of the Hindman-bed sample, which contained excessive sulfur, were chemically suitable for metallurgical use. The three coals tested in the sole-heated oven contracted less than normal for Appalachian coals of similar rank, Blending the Fire Clay and Flag coals with 20 or 30 percent low-volatile coal increased coke strength appreciably but increased the expansion beyond normal limits for industrial blends.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) ALEXANDER PARKES patented in England in 1851-52-53 a process for desilvering lead by means of zinc, making use of the greater affinity of silver for zinc than for lead, discovered by Karsten in 1842. The efforts in England to develop it commercially were not particularly successful, nor was the attempted introduction into the United States. This last was not surprising, as it was about the beginning of our Civil War, and at that period there was very little lead-bullion produced in the united States and there was no field for the process here. There was at that time on Staten Island an establishment that pattisonized lead, probably from Rossie, N. Y., and Chester, Pa., and possibly some Spanish lead, but the production of lead-bullion in the Far West had not yet begun. In 1864, Edward Balbach, of Newark, N. J., patented in this country a process for desilvering lead by means of zinc, and in 1867 Edward Balbach, Jr., patented a " movable black-lead retort with a neck, placed in a furnace," for the purpose of distilling the alloy of zinc, lead, and the precious metals. A brief comparison of the Parkes and the Balbach processes is interesting. The Parkes process as practiced in England consisted in stirring into silver-bearing lead, melted in a kettle, from 1 to 2 per cent. of zinc, cooling, skimming the alloy of lead, zinc, and silver that rose to the surface, liquating it in an iron retort, distilling the residual rich alloy in fire-clay retorts, thus regaining the zinc, and refining the desilvered lead at a low heat in a shallow cast-iron pan that formed the hearth of a reverberatory furnace. "In coal and mineral processing, several numeric parameters are used to quantify the separation performance of unit operations. For density-based separations, the partition curve is used as the starting point for many stages of diagnostic analyses. The curve is often quantified by its midpoint slope sharpness, and this single value is subsequently used for technical evaluation, benchmarking, and comparison. While this analytical approach does depict misplacement by relative density class, it inherently prioritizes middling separation and does not consider process economics or the micro-price value of individual classes. An alternative parameter, the organic efficiency, does indirectly consider process economics, but it does not reveal information on the root cause of lost revenue or misplacement. In this paper, a new analytical approach, the partition moment of inertia, is introduced. This parameter reconciles the technical misplacement data derived from the partition curve with the economic data derived from micro-pricing. The result is a new analytical procedure that promises better use of performance data. IntroductionPartition curves are commonly used in the characterization, evaluation and simulation of various physical separators. In mineral processing, partition curve analysis is routinely applied to hydrocyclones, screens, density separators and other beneficiation technologies that are based on intensive physical properties. Graphically, the partition curve depicts the recovery of particles as a function of the physical property on which the separation is based, such as particle density, size or magnetic susceptibility. Given the probabilistic nature of many real separators, the partition curve often exhibits a characteristic S shape (Fig. 1), similar to a cumulative normal distribution. Other geometric features of the curve are also depicted in Fig. 1, including the high and low closeout, or bypass, values; the midpoint slope; and the separation cut point, defined as the property value with 50 percent recovery.Partition curve analysis was originally proposed to evaluate coal washability (Tromp, 1937). Given the limited computational resources at the time, the analytical methods relied heavily on graphical construction and interpretation of the curve. Owing to the simplicity of calculation and interpretation, many of these graphical approaches are still widely used for performance analysis today. The most common calculations are based on the slope of the partition curve at the midpoint. Increased slopes correspond to enhanced separation performance, as a perfect separation exhibits a stepwise transition from 0 to 1 at the desired cut point, that is, an infinitely large slope. One common formulation of this slope, the Ecart Probable, Ep, is derived by evaluating the slope between the 25 and 75 percent recovery points:"

A technique was devised for measuring the rate of chemical reactions between reactive metals and molten-salt mixtures at high temperatures. The rate of the heterogeneous reaction between high-purity titanium metal and titanium trichloride in molten sodium chloride was determined. The reaction is surface-controlled, and the heat of activation is 8.29 kilocalories per mole TiC13. An active site or reaction nuclei is created by adsorbing a TiC13 molecule at the metal surface. Reaction of the second TiC13 species forms an activated complex that decomposes into three TiC12 molecules.

Coal, as energy resource, possesses numerous characteristics and properties which all have an influence on its gasification behaviour. The two properties considered as critically important when evaluating a coal source for gasification is its mineral content and slagging behaviour. Research has indicated that slagging formation can be inhibited or even prevented by the addition of a fluxing agent. It is thus of great importance to understand the mineral interaction during gasification in order to select a suitable fluxing agent for the prevention of slagging and clinker formation in the gasifier. The aim of the present project is to evaluate the effect of iron as a fluxing agent and study the transformation of the mineral and added iron during gasification. A pre-determined amount of pure elemental iron (between 2wt% and 20wt%) was added to a base case coal sample in order to study the effect of the addition of iron to the coal. The transformation of the iron in conjunction with the possible iron containing minerals present in the coal was studied by means of Mössbauer analyses. Typical characterisation techniques included proximate analyses, ultimate analyses and ash composition analyses. The ash fusion temperature analyses (AFT) were used to study and predict the slagging behaviour of the iron-spiked coal samples. Even though AFT analyses only provide an average flow property, it gives a good indication of the changes that the iron addition induces on coal properties. FactSage modelling was carried out in conjunction with the Mössbauer and AFT analyses. From the proximate, ultimate and ash composition analyses it was clear that the coal used con-formed to the average characteristics measured over an extended time period. From the AFT values it was seen that an increase in the flow temperature occurred with the addition of pure elemental iron to the coal, which can be of importance for operational purposes as to raise the gasifier temperature and not to have slagging problems to occur in the gasifier. The Mössbauer data show that he-matite is the main Fe-component that forms from the pyrite originally present and from the added iron to the coal, consistent with FactSage modelling, which shows that the partial oxygen pressure determines which mineral species will form. This study opens up new possibilities when considering operational problems experienced in in-dustrial gasifiers. Successful completion of this study and a study to look at reducing conditions in the gasifier will also add to the knowledge that already exists regarding fluxing agents.

The recent expansion of our cities into hilly areas, particularly on the Pacific Coast, has resulted in damage or destruction of many homes due to geological problems such as landslides, soil creep, erosion, subsidence, or groundwater seepage. In southern California, landslides are the principal cause of damage and attention is focused on them. Landslides have occurred due to the reactivation of old slide masses, or have been caused by grading and increased water, infiltration resulting from development.. Reactivation of a portion of the ancient Portuguese Bend landslide in Palos Verdes, Los Angeles County, affected approximately 150 homes. A common type of new failure' occurs when grading has undercut bedding or other essentially planar surfaces so that they dip unsupported out of slope. Other slides have occurred due to the inherent weakness of the material involved. Preventive measures undertaken to eliminate damage in the southern California area have. included areal geologic mapping programs-in-advance of development, enacting or strengthening grading codes, and requiring extensive studies by consulting geologists and soils engineers both during the design stage and during construction. In the design stage, proposed cuts are frequently flattened, lowered or reorientated. Frequently, due to the high cost of land, they are supported by compacted fill buttresses. As a result of these measures, the geologic environment has a major effect on the feasibility, design, and development of, a very substantial percentage of tracts or individual homes.

Contribution by G. Narsimhan It was with much pleasure that I went through D.F. Malan's excellent paper. The following explanatory and critical note has been the result of my deep study of the paper. Although by qualifications and experience I have been a chemical engineer, involved over four decades with problems in the modeling and simulation of transport-limited (heat and mass) chemical reactions in multi-phase systems, I have of and on interested myself in challenging problems in extractive metallurgy. This is the first time I have veered of to continuum mechanics, at the age of 71! Author's reply. I thank Professor Narsimhan for his extensive contribution to the paper. It provided me with the stimulus to derive an extended model. However, there are some inaccuracies in his arguments that need further discussion. Professor Narsimhan's main concern is that there is not a good enough fit between the derived viscoelastic Kelvin model and the experimental data supplied by Güler1 (see Figure l1 on page 218 of my paper). I will therefore explain the choice of a viscoelastic model in more detail and also make specific comments on the arguments given in his contribution.

The activities in the discovery of these new fields were engendered by the knowledge of the fact that present producing fields must within well defined periods be exhausted. Oil operators were willing to take the initial steps in exploitation in the absence of legislation that applied strictly to petroleum operations. The enactment of modern legislation in many of these Republics encouraging and protect¬ing exploitations may cause tremendous oil activities in these countries, and the results may be comparable with the magnitude of the undertakings and the prestige of the companies now entering this territory.These, oil fields are admirably located for convenient distribution of petroleum by water to all the Nations using oil as fuel for shipping and industrial concerns. The oil markets of the western coast of South America will derive immense benefits from the Panama Canal. This navigation route brings these markets into direct ocean shipment with the Atlantic coasts of the Western and Eastern Hemispheres.One deterrent to oil production in the Republics of South America is the want of inland. transportation facilities, but the recent laws of these Republics without exception provide for acquiring rights of way for pipe lines and other modes of transportation; and doubtless the great interests and. syndicates already operating in these regions will, as production increases, provide ample pipe line transportation sufficient to convey to the coast the oil produced. It way be assumed, from the legal guarantees afforded, and from operating equipment and machinery that are now being concentrated that refineries will be erected at shipping points for the purpose of making these petroleum products accessible to the world."
