"This paper describes the sinking of a circular concrete ventilation shaft through 110feet of water-bearing overburden. The brine circulation freezing method was used to stabilize the walls during excavation. In order to take advantage of the cold winter weather, a custom-built heat exchanger (natural radiator) was installed in place of the standard mechanical refrigeration plant.IntroductionIn the late fall of 1979, Les Mines Selbaie awarded a contract to the firm of 1.S. Redpath Limited to sink a ventilation shaft on its property in northwestern Quebec. The shaft was to be sunk through 110 feet of water-bearing overburden and approximately 90 feet of rock to a final depth of 200 feet below surface. The water table was measured at 16 feet below the surface elevation.After examining the soils report and diamond drill core from the shaft area, Redpath came to the conclusion that freezing was the best way to stabilize the overburden for sinking. LocationThe mine site is 420 statute miles due north of Toronto, just east of the Ontario/Quebec border (Fig. 1). Access to the site is provided by a development road built by the Quebec government from the Matagami/lames Bay Highway. History of Ground Freezing In the Mining IndustryIn 1862, shortly after the development of mechanical refrigeration, a mine shaft was sunk through an artificially frozen water-bearing formation in the United Kingdom. The first application of ground freezing in North America was for a Michigan iron ore shaft in 1888. Since that time, the freezing method has been used to sink hundreds of shafts throughout the world. Its best known application was to sink sixteen shafts through the Blairmore Formation in Saskatchewan.The same method has been used in every case. It involves chilling a calcium chloride brine solution and circulating the brine in concentric pipes, spaced between 3 and 6 feet around the shaft perimeter and usually 4 to 5 feet from the limits of the proposed shaft excavation."

"Experimental heats of reaction for the formation of several Al3Ti + TiB2 intermetallic composite formulations have been determined utilizing bomb calorimetry. To overcome the kinetic constraints and achieve ignition in these formulations, a boron (B)/potassium nitrate (KNO3) initiation aid was incorporated within the blended reactant compact. The heat contribution from the initiation aid was regressed to provide estimates of the heat of reaction of the nominal formulations. Powder x-ray diffraction was utilized to identify the products of the reaction and discern any differences between the predicted equilibrium products of the formulation and the actual products.IntroductionReaction synthesis is a technique for the creation of ceramics, intermetallics, and in-situ composite materials [1]. Reaction synthesis is defined by its self, propagating mechanism, where the energy liberated from a localized reaction within a green powder compact is enough to carry the bulk reaction to completion. Achieving a self, propagating state can be achieved in variations of two primary methods of initiation: uniform volumetric heating and directional propagation [2].Uniform volumetric heating involves subjecting a green compact of the unreacted formulation to uniform heating in a furnace to encourage diffusion to initiate the reaction (Figure 1a) throughout the bulk material. Directional propagation utilizes a point heat source at one section of a green compact of unreacted formulation (Figure 1b). The localized exothermic reaction at one point in the compact then initiates the reaction in the section of the compact adjacent to it and fully propagates throughout the entire compact until completion. Initiation of the localized reaction is generally associated with the melting of the constituent with the lowest melting point, with instantaneous initiation of the reaction usually occurring close to that melting point [1]. The oxygen is united with the iron as a magnetic oxide, as Gautier asserts, and this oxide is reduced to a protoxide by one-atom of the manganese uniting with one atom of the oxygen of the magnetic oxide of iron. This paper presents the stability assessment of the steel pipe piles that are used to support a deadman beam to anchor an adjacent bulkhead wall. Finite element analyses are performed to assess the stability of the bulkhead wall and determine the required tie-back force to the pile. The piles are relatively close to the bulkhead wall such that their soil resistance wedge zones are not fully developed but truncated by the bulkhead wall. The reduced lateral resistance capacity of the anchor piles is determined by applying the Coulomb wedge method on the truncated soil passive zones between the pile and wall. Both the conventional soldier pile stability (in terms of force and moment equilibrium) and Winkler soil spring (for soil-pile-interaction) analyses are used to assess the stability of the anchor piles.

The Mojave Desert is a particularly fragile ecosystem that faces several significant impacts. These include rapid housing development, overdrafted water supplies, and loss of wildlife habitat as a result of mining, industrial activity and urban sprawl. Over the past three years, a diverse group of educators, natural resource managers and business leaders has been assembled under the auspices of a local college to provide unique natural resource education opportunities for the region. By leveraging the collective experience of these present generation natural resource professionals, the Mojave Sustainability Project hopes to provide the next generation of professionals with that knowledge and those technical skills upon which tomorrow’s community can rely. This paper is a case study of how partnerships between academia, government, industry and the community can serve to address the regional social, environmental, and economic needs of today, while investing in the development of those professionals who will balance these needs tomorrow.

"It was discovered that the selective activity of bacteria during the extraction of raw material concentrates by means of flotation could also be achieved with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) excreted by bacteria. EPS, which is extracted by means of centrifuging bacterial cultures, can help to significantly reduce the use of cyanides, approximately 200,000 t/a of which are used for ore dressing today.The bacterium used was Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. In order to identify the bandwidth of the oxidation activity, 20 bacterial strains of the strain collection of the University of Hamburg were attracted to iron(II) sulfate and pyrite under defined conditions. All strains oxidized iron(II) sulfate ten times faster than pyrite.EPS has so far been derived from four strains. In general, EPS extracts are divided into a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic fraction. The hydrophilic fraction is composed of e.g. fucose, rhamnose and glucose; fatty acids such as dodecanoic acid, hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid and nonadecanoic acid were found in the hydrophobic fraction.Pure mineral phases and mineral mixtures were used for the flotation tests. As opposed to current knowledge, the results were reproducible with technical flotation machines."

"INTRODUCTION Sorting technology has advanced rapidly recently. Of the two possibilities particle sorting has advanced especially in introducing new sensors and the use of multiple sensors. The analyzing and computing lead times have also shortened. This has made it a viable technology option for many applications but not for the most important sorting task at a mine; the run-of mine ore. Bulk sorting, however, has advanced in smaller steps, even if the technology has the capability to tackle the run-of-mine ore and offers a high potential to bring mines substantial economic benefits. The sensors, which are useful are restricted by the difficult operating conditions or by the ore characteristics. One of the important features of run-of-mine sorting technology is the major material handling infrastructure required. The capital expenditure can be substantial requiring good understanding of the sortability curve (grade-recovery curve) behavior of the ore. This paper discusses one industrial case, where substantial amount of data measured from the ore feed belt has been obtained. This data was then analyzed for the grade recovery curves obtainable from that ore with sorting. EXPERIMENTAL The XRF measurement used was the FCA device from IMA Engineering (Fig.1). It is a specially built version of XRF designed to operate with coarse material. The measurement was situated at the main belt conveyor taking ore from the primary crusher to the stockpile. The crushed ore was about 80% -300 mm at a capacity of 1100-1200 tph (Fig.2). Measurement times were varied from 30 seconds to a minute. Measurements were obtained over several months.As the XRF is a surface distribution measuring technique, the measurement was first tested upon accuracy and reproducibility against plant daily wet chemical assays and against on-line Courier feed analysis. As there is a varying delay in the ore stockpile, the delay time was used as a variant in the validation. Different measurement times were tested for accuracy. A one minute measurement time gave a total measurement relative standard error, which was both for Cu and Ni below 3%. The results showed also very robust correlations; for Cu, the correlation coefficient was R > 0,94 for one minute measurements over three months and R > 0,86 for Ni respectively. Fig 3. As the high-grade copper deposits in the world become depleted, there is an increasing focus on developing lower-grade ores which contain problematic impurities such as arsenic. Indeed, many high-arsenic ore bodies remain undeveloped because of their high arsenic levels. Separation of arsenic from copper at the beneficiation stage is difficult using the current processing techniques and invariably copper concentrates produced from these ores contain high arsenic levels, sometimes so high as to make them unacceptable to copper smelters. New, sustainable approaches are needed to allow development of high-arsenic copper ores while at the same time minimizing arsenic dispersion into the biosphere. The most promising route for separating arsenic from copper at the flotation stage centers on the use of pulp potential control. In recent years CSIRO has demonstrated at laboratory scale, for a number of high-arsenic copper ores, that crude flotation separation between arsenic-bearing minerals and copper-bearing minerals can be made. The differences in specific minerals responses to changes in pulp potential and pulp pH are exploited for this separation. Such separations nominally produce a low-arsenic high-copper concentrate and a low-copper high-arsenic concentrate. The former can be smelted without penalty, while the latter requires further treatment to capture and stabilize the arsenic and to recover the residual copper. Consideration has now been given to treatment options for the high-arsenic low-copper product. A pyrometallurgical option, involving a low temperature roast to selectively fume off the arsenic and leave a high-copper calcine, coupled with an arsenic stabilization step, has been demonstrated in the laboratory, and a preliminary techno-economic evaluation shows the process to be economically favorable. These results were recently published. CSIRO has now investigated an alternate hydrometallurgical option, involving atmospheric alkaline sulphide leaching of the high-arsenic product, where the arsenic is selectively dissolved leaving a copper-rich leach residue. The leaching testwork was carried at on the same high-arsenic low-copper material used in the roasting studies, enabling a techno-economic comparison of the alternate roasting and leaching treatment options to be made. The alkaline leaching work is briefly described and the results of the process option comparison presented and discussed. To improve recoveries of Ni, Cu and Co in the Inco flash furnace, a new operating concept was investigated. By adding sufficient coke to form a supernatant coke layer, a reducing barrier would form allowing for improved reduction of descending oxidized sulfide mineral particles formed in the flame. The objective of this investigation was to study the kinetic mechanism and efficiency of the coke layer to produce a sulfur deficient matte. The mechanism and rate of carbon reduction of each of the phases formed in the flash flame, i.e. sulfides and oxysulfides were investigated by means of X-ray visualization tests. Graphite-slag reduction was also conducted for comparison purposes. In the case of slag, poor wettability and the formation of a gas film on the surface of the carbon reductant are often blamed for limiting the reaction surface area that ultimately results in poor reaction kinetics. The X-ray visualization tests confirmed that matte and oxysulfide wet coke better than slag and that the rates of reduction of matte and oxysulfide are faster than that of slag.

This Bureau of Mines study is an appraisal of the demand for platinum, should this strategic metal be used as a. catalyst in the National abatement of automobile exhaust pollution. The Clean Air Act 0f 1970, as amended, requires that automobiles produced in 1975 and thereafter be provided with antipollutive measures to control automotive exhaust emissions. The study considers the need for automobile pollution control, the methodology for such control, the annual primary (new) platinum demand for automobiles produced from 1975 to 1990, primary platinum availability, and supply-demand forecasts and outlook. The correlative demand for platinum for the production of the required unleaded gasoline is also considered. Methodology for the study included a forecast of new automobile production from 1975 to 1990, development of automobile survival and retirement data, estimates of new platinum demand under various conditions of salvage, and data on recycling the precious metal from the catalytic converters of scrapped vehicles and existing vehicles when their spent converters are exchanged for replacement units. The new platinum demand for automobile exhaust converters, based on a converter service life of 50,000 miles, is estimated to be 1.41 million troy ounces initially in 1975, rising to 1.68 million in 1980, and declining curvi-linearly to 0.94 million in 1990. The platinum demand for converter longevities other than 50,000 miles can be derived from the tabular data presented. An appendix to the report presents a comparison between longevities of 50,000 miles and 25,000 miles. The petroleum industry's demand for new platinum for the production of lead-free gasolines could total as high as 1 million troy ounces between 1972 and 1981, just for expansion of isomerization and reforming capacity, and is in addition to normal operating demand for this metal.

IN the Journal of the Franklin Institute for May, 1870, there is published a description of a Colorimeter, together with a modification of the method proposed by Professor Eggertz, for determining combined carbon in iron and steel. An instrument of the kind there described, but of a little higher range, though in other respects not differing materially from the one originally made and used in the Iron-Masters' Laboratory, I now submit to your inspection ; and I propose, also, to make some determinations with it for the purpose of showing how quickly they may be made, and enabling you to form some judgment of what reliance can be placed in the results. Professor Eggertz proposed only a single standard, and the solution to be tested should be diluted to exactly correspond in color with that of the standard, and the per cent. of carbon calculated after carefully noting and making allowance for the measures of water used in diluting. In practice, difficulty was found in bringing the color of the normal solution down to the exact shade of the standard ; also other difficulties were met with in conducting the process, causing delay and interfering with the accuracy of the results. To materially overcome these, and after numerous attempts, an instrument such as is now before you suggested itself to me; and also I concluded to use a larger quantity of metal than directed by Eggertz, and, in addition, to filter the solution from its insoluble matter before making the comparison ; and, more recently, to use an acid of just such strength as would completely dissolve the metal without the application of heat. Experimenting with these changes from the original method I obtained reasonably good results. The instrument, you will observe, consists of a series of tubes, sixteen in number, two and a half inches long, and about half an inch in diameter, standing upright, and securely fastened in a light, portable, walnut-wood frame, but separated one from the other so as to allow just sufficient space between to place for comparison the tube containing the solution to be tested. The function of advertising is communication. Viewing the advertisements of mineral suppliers exposes the reader to a broad spectrum of purposes: announcements of new products, availability and supply, departmental services, company image, etc. It is the advertiser's hope that the message being conveyed is the same message being perceived by the viewer. To maximize this probability, the advertiser at least must carefully construct precise copy, identify the target audience and select the appropriate advertising medium. A truly successful and efficient ad, however, also must accurately reflect a product's life cycle, i.e., the rise and fall in demand for a product. Buggy whips and radio tubes are classic examples of items formerly in high demand. Industrial minerals are similarly affected by occurrences of product life cycles.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducratory and field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of dust collector bags for reducing dust liberation and operator exposure from a roof bolter’s dust collection system. The laboratory tests evaluated the bag’s effectiveness to contain dust and the effect on canister filter loading in both a bag and bagless condition. The dust emissions from the collector’s exhaust were also measured in each condition during laboratory testing and show that nearly 100% of the test dust fed into the collector was captured by the dust bags. Loading and pressure drop on the dust collector’s canister filter is greatly decreased when using the bags, enabling longer periods of drilling without filter removal/cleaning. The field results showed that, even though dust standards were met, respirable dust in exhausted emissions was reduced around the bolter. Laboratory and field results show that benefits from use of the bags are realized in all areas of operator exposure.

Three phases of Bi2O3 were first synthesized by extraction-stripping precipitation and post decomposition from BiCl3 leaching solution. The as-prepared Bi2O3 were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic performances of the oxides were investigated by decomposing rhodamine B (RB) under visible irradiation. It shows that the Bi2O3 with different crystal structures and morphology were obtained under different decomposition temperature. The band gaps of as-prepared samples were 2.36, 2.41, and 2.78 eV for b-Bi2O3, a-Bi2O3, and d-Bi2O3, respectively, and the photocatalytic activities followed the order: b-Bi2O3 > a-Bi2O3 > d-Bi2O3, which was in good accordance with the photoluminescence spectra measurement results. The b-Bi2O3 exhibited the best photocatalytic performance which can effectively degrade 99.23% RB within 240 min.

Provide the mining industry with a simple, accurate and readily available means of measuring the gas flow from pipe outlets such as gob holes Approach The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to establish correction or method factors for anemometers when used to measure gas flow from pipe outlets. Using the Anemometer Anemometers are used by the mining industry to make air velocity measurements in mine entries. Although the instrument has no appreciable influence on the airstream in mine entries, especially since the cross-sectional area of an entry is much larger than the cross-section of the anemometer, correction or method factors are used to correct the center line anemometer velocity to average velocity. This adjustment is made because the air velocity in a mine entry is highest in the center and lower at the sides. Anemometers can be used to measure gas flow from small diameter pipe outlets; however, since the instrument diameter is much larger than one-sixth of the pipe diameter, it will influence the air-stream from these small outlets. Resulting velocity measurements are erroneously high by as much as 30 percent. Method factors must be applied to such anemometer measurements taken at pipe outlets. Through a research investigation the Bureau of Mines established a set of method factors for center-line anemometer readings taken at the discharge end of 4-to 8-inch diameter pipes. These method factors were combined with method factors which were developed by the National Coal Board of Great Britain for 12-to 30-inch diameter pipes. The anemometer was mounted on the end of a short rod and held against the pipe for support except on the 4-inch pipe where the instrument was started and stopped remotely to prevent hand interference with the air-stream during measurements. Method factors were determined by comparing the anemometer measurements at the pipe outlet to the true average airflow which was simultaneously determined upstream by venturi measurements. Consequently, a method factor is nothing more than the ratio of the true velocity to an anemometer measurement.

CANADIAN gold production is forging ahead annually and the prospects are that it will continue to do so for many years. Table 1 shows recent annual increases. Production for 1933 will probably reach $70,000,000, and further increases are likely in 1934 and 1935. (Data for November and December, 1932, are estimated throughout this article.) The depression sent many prospectors to the woods so during the last two years many new gold areas have been discovered and are attracting real capital for exploration and development. Several mills came into production in 1932 and mills now under construction will start production in 1933. The offices of mining lawyers are busy. Capital for this new work is obtained from well financed mining companies, syndicates, and individuals who were fortunate enough to invest in the dividend-paying gold mines of the north country in the early days. Prospectors and capital are cooperating. An interest is always retained by the prospector or vender and usually a small amount of real money is given the prospector.

THE ladle is a small hearth made on a cage of iron bars like a bird-cage, and has a handle so that it can easily be taken from the forge and carried wherever desired. It is a common device and is much used among masters for small castings, but with a large weight you would have difficulty in lifting it by hand even though you were aided by levers and winches. If you should indeed do it, it would be just as if you had lifted the aforesaid hearth by force, and this would be unwise if you could do anything less difficult. A forge is likewise made for this, with a good pair of large bellows that are well covered with cloth. When the small hearth has been made with good clay, baked, and well covered with ashes, it is placed in front of the mouth [of the bellows] and a crown of two or three brick ends is built around it on top of the rim so that the charcoal may be held better and in greater quantity.
