Physical and chemical methods were investigated to tower thorium levels in Eneabba Ilmenite from the natural levels of 180-500 ppm to give Becher Process synthetic rutile with less than 100 ppm thorium. Chemlcal treatments, but not physical separations were successful. A pilot plant trial of a sodium hydroxide leach (25M NaOH at 75°C and 40 wt% solids for Ih) followed by a sulphuric acid leach (3M H2S04 at 90°C and 60 wt% solids for 211) confirmed that thorium could be removed to below 100 ppm. However, the activity of the ilmenite was not lowered to the same extent

As a result of a changing market pattern for anthracite, there is now an increasing demand for steam size and a decreasing demand for domestic sizes. To help the producer meet this new demand, the authors present the technical aspects of the problem of crushing domestic sizes to steam fineness and size. The market pattern for anthracite coal has changed considerably in recent years. The demand for domestic sizes has been gradually decreasing and the demand for the steam sizes has been increasing. The companies however aim for a maximum production of domestic sizes, since these sizes command premium prices. To meet the market demands, particularly in certain periods of the year, further size reduction of the coarse clean coal is necessary. The present practice of multistage crushing in toothed rolls leads to complicated flow arrangements and is high in cost. Data presented herein indicate that crushers with high reduction ratios could be used with a resulting simplification of crushing flows and an appreciable reduction of capital and operating costs. The different types of crushing equipment investigated included the rotary-type breaker, the jaw crusher, the impactor-type crusher, and the Aerofall mill. CURRENT PRACTICE The standard sizes of anthracite are presented in Table I and market specifications require that any given size be maintained with only a limited amount of oversize and undersize material. The 1958 prices of the various sizes also are presented, so it may be seen that size reduction is only performed when dictated by market demands. At the present time the general practice of crushing anthracite consists of removing the top size and crushing it in a toothed double roll crusher to the next largest size. Consequently, to reduce the domestic egg, stove, and nut sizes to steam sizes of pea, buck, rice, and barley, the original material must be screened to produce the three top sizes and each size must be crushed in three separate rolls to the next largest size. Each crushed product must then be rescreened to remove the oversize for re crush ing. Thus a typical operation would consist of scalping the egg size from a mixture, crushing it to stove size, and rescreening the product. This same cycle would be repeated for the stove and nut sizes requiring three screens and three crushers as well as conveying equipment to handle the crushed products. This results in an expensive series of operations to make a product which sells for a lower price. If the three top sizes are crushed in one operation to the smaller sizes then the yield of steam sizes is low and the production of Nos. 4 and 5 sizes is large. These sizes sell for lower prices than the steam sizes. A typical operation is presented in Fig. 1. From the figure it may be seen that the original cleaned anthracite contains 67.4 pet domestic sizes, 26.4 pct steam sizes, and 6.2 pct fines. After multistage crushing of the domestic to steam sizes the composition of the product is 0.6 pct domestic sizes, 89.6 pct steam sizes, and 9.8 pct fines. The oxygen-fuel oil burner lance is a very useful tool at the Monessen B.O.F. It increases the overall flexibility of the operation. An additional 15,000 to 20,000 ingot tons can be produced at a given hot metal supply. It helps overcome sporadic drops in hot metal thermal values and/or supply. It results in increased yield, in particular, on high carbon heats where much yield was lost on reblow triggered slag reactions. The burner has also been adopted as a standard tool to aid burning in new vessel linings. Overall, steelmaking performance has improved with the use of standard preheat practice. Scrap charges up to 50 percent have been used routinely in times of extreme hot metal shortages, but the performance is weak in some categories. Development of a single step oxy-oil process is in progress. In this process, scrap and hot metal are charged as in the normal B.O.F. practice, but fuel oil is fired with the refining oxygen.

The removal of rock blockages in mining operations has long been a risky undertaking, especially in high overhead conditions. Moreover, the assessment of where to put charges and the placement of them has been difficult due to the lack of visibility and safe access to the area. Traditionally, wedging long poles with explosives on them to keep the operator at a relatively safe distance has been the tried and true method of attempting to remove the blockages. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect system as it usually takes several attempts to remove the blockage. Each successive attempt results in even more dangerous conditions for workers and/or damage to the mine due to the successively larger amounts of explosives used until the hang-up finally comes down.Over the years, different ideas have been proposed to improve this process and reduce the inherent safety risks. Some of the technologies that have been trialled include projectiles fired at the hang-up; large, cumbersome arms; and massive amounts of explosives, each of which come with their own inherent safety risks that result in dangerous situations for miners and the mine.After gaining a thorough understanding of the process, Penguin Automated Systems Inc has developed a robotic system that is capable of working in a rock blockage safely. The idea combines the latest in telerobotics technology with 3D scanning and underground geospatial positioning. The hang-up removal is performed by scanning the inside of the hang-up to rapidly develop a geospatially placed 3D model for the operator to use. The 3D model is detailed enough that the operator can attempt to pick the ‘keystone’. A blasting engineer or the operator can then determine the exact position where the explosive charge should be placed in the 3D model and thus at the actual hang-up. The operator, controlling the robotic arm, uses the 3D virtual reality model of the robot system and the actual drawpoint information model to display the location information, the arm can then reach into the hang-up to position the charge using the kinematic model of the robot system. The 3D model is used to provide views inside the hang-up so that the operator can move the arm safely and precisely. This process allows the operator to place the charge (using the 3D representation of the drawpoint) from a long distance away. As the process continues, the end of the arm drills the rock and precisely loads the explosives. The robot then returns the blasting cable to the command station, which is located in a truck at a safe distance from the blockage.This paper will review the development of the system and present the results to date.CITATION:Baiden, G, 2016. IN 1943 the U. S. Bureau of Mines undertook drilling in an effort to develop new reserves of coking coal in an area near Paonia, Colo., as a part of an attempt to alleviate the shortage of known coking coal of good quality in the western United States. Geologic mapping of the area was undertaken by the U. S. Geological Survey with the purpose of first furnishing guidance in location of drillholes and later aiding in interpreting the results of the drilling. The drilling program was under the general supervision of A. L. Toenges of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. J. J. Dowd and R. G. Travis were in charge of the work in the field. Geologic mapping was started by D. A. Andrews of the Geological Survey in the summer of 1943 and was continued from the spring of 1944 to 1949 by the writer. The first few holes drilled failed to locate coking coal, but in the summer of 1944 coking coal was discovered by drilling 6 miles east of Somerset, Colo., the site of present mining. In the succeeding years, 1945 to 1948, 100 to 150 million tons of coal suitable for coking were blocked out by drilling. The ensuing discussion of the geologic controls on the distribution of coking coal in the area is based on the geologic mapping as well as the drilling done in the Paonia area, more complete descriptions of which have appeared or are in process of publication."' In order that the possible geologic controls affecting the present distribution of coking coal may be considered, it is necessary to discuss briefly the indicators of coking quality coals. Coking Coal Coal that cokes has the property of softening to form a pastelike mass at high temperatures under reducing conditions in the coke oven. This softening is accompanied by the release of the volatile constituents as bubbles of gas. After release of the contained gases and upon cooling, a hard gray coherent but spongelike mass remains that is referred to as coke. This substance varies greatly in physical properties and, to be suitable for industrial use, must be sufficiently dense and strong to withstand the crushing pressure of heavy furnace loads. Western coals have a generally high volatile content and therefore form a satisfactory coke only when they attain a rather high fluidity during the process of heating arid distillation in the coke oven. When this high degree of fluidity is developed, the volatile constituents escape and leave a finely porous coke. On the other hand, when the degree of fluidity is low the product is an excessively porous and therefore physically weak mass that is called char." Small quantities of oxygen present in coal are believed to decrease the fluidity of the material during the coking process and to favor the development of char rather than coke. In consequence, coal chemists have for some time considered the possibility of developing an index to coking qualities by inspection of chemical analyses of coals.' A formula has now been developed that does permit a rough preliminary estimate of the cokability of coal on the basis of the analysis on an ash and moisture-free basis. Coals may be eliminated as possible coking fuels if the oxygen content is greater than 11 pct. Similarly the ratio of hydrogen to oxygen must be greater than 0.5 and the ratio of fixed carbon to volatile constituents must be greater than 1.3. If the coal, on the basis of these limiting factors, appears to have possible coking qualities, the following formula permits determination of the coking index: a+b+c+d Coking index = -------- 5 a equals 22/oxygen content on ash and moisture-free basis, b equals two times the hydrogen content divided by oxygen content on moisture and ash-free basis, c equals fixed carbon/l.3 x volatile matter, and d equals the heating value on moist, ash-free basis/13,600. Coking indices higher than 1.0 suggest that the coal will coke, and indices above' 1.1 indicate good coking tendencies. Although generally usable, this formula 'is not completely satisfactory because the percentage of oxygen shown in ultimate analyses is derived only by difference; i.e., by subtracting the sum of the percentages of the constituents determined analytically from 100 pct. Although the coking index indicates the coking tendencies of coal, it is necessary to make physical tests of coke before its industrial value can be determined. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has developed a standard procedure for determining the approximate strength of coke that would be formed from a given coal. In this test one part of ground coal, mixed with 15 parts of carborundum, is baked to form a standard briquette. The weight, in kilograms, necessary to crush the briquette is termed the agglutinating index. This paper may be divided into two main parts: (1) analysis and data to show that Eq. 6 adequately correlates the authors' experimental data, and (2) the assertion that Eq. 20 "should permit scale-up with data taken from one pipe diameter for Newtonian, inelastic non-Newtonian, and viscoelastic fluids, such as dilute polymer fracturing fluids, which produce considerable pressure reductions." The authors might well recommend that this broad grouping of fluid types could be correlated by using Eq. 6 (requiring data from at least two pipe diameters). On the other hand, Eq. 20 is only shown to be adequate for conditions within the range of the present data set. Specifically, predictions by Eq. 20 for diameter scale-up to casing sizes would give larger deviations than implied in Table 2, and scale-up for some other fluids that give large drag reduction could be grossly in error. The description of a class of fluids "which produce a diameter family of straight parallel lines on a log (d?p/4L) vs log (8 v/d) plot. . ." defines a necessary condition for using Eq. 6; i.e., that s shall be constant for each fluid. The proposal that Eq. 20 is applicable to turbulent flow of such fluids is equivalent to saying that the spacing of these parallel lines, with A being constant, will be found to correspond to m = -1.20 for all such fluids. Table 1 shows the values of m derived from data on 16 non-Newtonian fluids. The key statement of this paper is that the diameter exponents "do not vary significantly from . . . -1.20." In statistical terms, this says that the m value for each fluid, which was obtained from all the measurements made on that fluid. has not been shown to be different from the arithmetic mean of the m values for the 16 fluids tested. This implies that the group mean, -1.20, is a more reliable value to use for an individual fluid than is the m value derived from the data on that fluid alone. No statistical test is described to support the key statement that the diameter exponents do not vary significantly from -1.20. Such a test would have to take into account that each individual m value is shown to correlate the pressure gradients for its fluid, with only about 3 percent standard deviation over the diameter range covered. That is, the m value is not the result of a single independent measurement. Thus, it would not be sufficient, or valid, to compare the deviation of one of the m values with the variance of the 16 values of m about their mean. An alternative interpretation of the key statement is that the diameter exponents do not vary appreciably from -1.20; i.e., that using -1.20 does not cause serious inaccuracy. Table 2 seems to be offered in support of such an assertion. However, such a statistical treatment (1) is unnecessary and (2) cannot lead to any valid scale-up generalization. The amount of error introduced by using a 1"wrong" value of diameter exponent — i.e., -1.20 instead of m — is determined by Eq. 6. The ratio of the pressures predicted by Eqs. 6 and 20 for scale-up from ds in small pipe to d, in casing is The pressure for 30-percent calcium carbonate slurry (m = -1.112) in 10-in. ID pipe would be predicted 30 percent higher by Eq. 6 than by Eq. 20, if based on tests in 0.5-in. ID pipe. Industrial Minerals commodity profiles are continued from May's Annual Review issue. Diatomite G. Coombs, Manville Sales Corp. Growth in US diatomite production continued to lag in 1986. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that 580 kt (640,000 st) were produced last year. This is a 1%0 growth over 1985. The cumulative growth from the 1982 low point is 4.4%. Present production, though, is still only 90% of the high tonnage of 1979. The industry will see increased competitive activity with the start-ups of two new mines and production facilities in California and Oregon. US production has come primarily from Lompoc, CA, Bassalt, Clark Station, and Lovelock, NV, and Quincy, WA. New production, probably with capacities of 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) each, have started near Burney, CA, and Vale, OR. Eagle Picher's new, full-line filter aid and filler plant at Celatom, Vale, OR, was dedicated in August. The plant uses diatomite from the Celatom mining district in Juntura, OR. Grefco's new filter aid and filler plant near Burney, CA, was ready in July. It produced flux calcined products through a single kiln and can handle both bag and bulk shipments. The operations are in Shata County with the plant and mine at the same site. Manville Specialties Group is moving its Filtration and Minerals Division headquarters and research staffs to Lompoc, CA. The move is intended to strengthen response and performance by locating research, marketing, and production close together. Diatomite is processed in three methods: natural, calcined, and flux calcined. The natural is dried to remove water and is particle size classified. Calcined or straight calcined products have been sintered to modify particle size or permeability. Flux calcination, or flux sintering, has a stronger influence on permeability and also benefits color. The unique structure of diatomite is used in a range of particle sizes from fine paint fillers, to coarser filter aids, to granular aggregates. Dimension stone L. Meade, Geomapping Associates Ltd. 1986 was another good year for dimension stone production. The trend toward using marble, granite, limestone, sandstone, and slate has created an increasing demand. According to US Bureau of Mines 1986 estimates, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of dimension stone, with a value of $173 million, was produced by 200 companies. This is an increase from 1985, where 220 companies produced 1 Mt (1.12 million st) valued at $172 million. The increased production volume and decreased unit value is due to the competition from imports. The net import reliance in 1986 was 68% compared to 62% in 1985. The value of imports was $374 million in 1986 versus $295 million the year before. In an effort to maintain their market share, domestic finishers, particularly in the granite industry, continued to upgrade plants and machinery during 1986. In addition, offshore dollars have financed a number of fabricating facilities in North America that will finish imported rough stock. It is hoped that this increased domestic production capability will capitalize on a devalued US dollar. The trend has been for growth in stone usage and market. This trend is continuing with increased public awareness and desire for natural stone in buildings. The area of greatest market growth is expected to be in residential and interior decorative stone usage. Use of sophisticated, automated equipment has made the cost more affordable. Now lobbies, foyers, and specialty rooms are being clad in stone. Dolomite J. Welshimer, National Lime & Stone Co. About three-quarters of dolomite production is used as construction aggregates and 10% to 20% is sold or used as an industrial mineral. Total limestone and dolomite consumed for chemical and metallurgical purposes is about 136 Mt/a (150 million stpy). Sales of industrial dolomitic products were somewhat stronger in 1986 than levels recorded in the early 1980s. Some of the sales' strength, however, can be attributed to reductions in the number of active mining and processing operations. The industry will probably undergo further consolidation by the end of this decade. This will be due primarily to the continued softening in demand by the steel industry. Dolomitic limestone deposits being mined for raw materials for the steel, glass, and refractory in¬dustries are generally 54% calcium carbonate and 45% magnesium carbonate by weight. Impurities composed of silicon, aluminum, iron, sulfur, and phosphorous, represent less than 1%. Bauxite was first discovered in-the United States near Rome, Ga., in 1887, Approximately 400,000 tons of bauxite ranging from 46 to-62 percent alumina were mined in the area from 1888 to 1930. In February 1943, The Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. installed a dryer and began mining and reworking dumps from the old bauxite mines. Some 3,000 long tons were dried and shipped to the chemical industries from March 1943, to June 30, 1943. In 1941 and 1942, representatives of the Bureau of Mined and the Federal Geological Survey/ visited this area and proposed an exploratory project that at first was to be confined to the Heritage district northeast of Rome (see fig; I). The Bobo district, southwest of Rome, was to be explored after work .1n the Hermitage district was completed. The Hermitage district comprises an area of about 50 square miles in the northwest quarter of Bartow County and the adjacent portion of Floyd County. It is bounded on the north by the Gordon County line, on the east by U. S. Highway 41, on the south by U. S. Highway 441, and on the west by State Highway 53.

Highwall mining is an important coal mining method. It appears that upwards of 60 highwall miners are presently in operation, and they may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. A review of the Mines Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data over the 20 year period from 1983 to 2002 identified 9 fatalities attributable to auger and highwall mining of which inadequate ground control accounted for 1/3. In the past 5 years, 1 fatality occurred in highwall mining. Estimates of the manpower requirements in highwall mining suggest that its fatality rate is essentially the same as for surface coal mining, thus highwall mining appears to be a very safe modern mining method. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern, and operators are required to develop and follow an appropriate highwall mining ground control plan. The plans usually specify the following geotechnical parameters: hole width, maximum hole depth, maximum overburden depth, seam thickness, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. Calculated web pillar stability factor exceeded 1.3 for most designs evaluated. This study examined records from 5,289 highwall miner holes with a total completed footage of about 2,560,000 feet to understand the reasons for early pull out. Average lost footage is typically about 20% of planned footage. Only 35% of the holes reached planned depth, and 20% were short due to rockfalls. Water and adverse geology accounted for 15% of the losses. Mechanical/electrical problems, guidance, and slope stability problems accounted for the remaining 30%. Web pillar stability factor for these holes also exceeded 1.3 in 95% of cases. Best practices to avoid trapped miners include: avoid mining in stream valleys, avoid mining near outside corners, careful alignment of each hole and the use of an onboard guidance system. Several issues in highwall mining ground control require further investigation including highwall mining through old auger workings, highwall mining near old underground mines, multiple-seam and multiple lift highwall mining and finally the size and frequency of barrier pillars.

The Companhia Vale do Rio Doce in Brazil operates one of the most extensive systems in the world for the mining, transportation, processing, pelletizing and shipping of high grade hematite iron ore and pellets. Current shipping of unbeneficiated, sized, high grade ore from its ports at Tubarão and Vitória is now at the rate of 17,500,000 metric tons annually. An increase in this annual rate is now under study. Using the technology and facilities of Lurgi (1) and Arthur G. McKee company CVRD undertook a program to process and pelletize two types of fines - "Blue Dust" and ?Itabira Fines?. Blue Dust is a high grade fine ore which was bypassed while mining the direct shipping ores and which, also, exists as a very large ore body called the Conceição Mine. Itabira Fines is a lower grade of fine ore which is comprised of in-situ fines and, also fines which are generated in sizing the direct shipping ores for a rigid specification market.

An open-pit mining operation can be viewed as a process by which the open surface of a mine is continuously deformed. The planning of a mining program involves the design of the final shape of this open surface. The approach developed in this paper is based on the following assumptions: 1. the type of material its mine value and its extraction cost is given for each point; 2. restrictions on the geometry of the pit are specified (surface boundaries and maximum allowable wall slopes); 3. The objective is to maximize total profit-total mine value of material extracted minus total extraction cost. Two numeric methods are proposed: A simple dynamic programming algorithm for the two-dimensional pit (or a single vertical section of a mine), and. a more elaborate graph algorithm for the general three-dimensional pit. Off-grade molybdenite concentrates, mainly derived from secondary sources as by-products of the processing of copper, uranium and tungsten ores, do not satisfy the purity requirements (percent MoS2) for the production of molybdenum bearing products. This investigation is a continuation of a successful effort to refine a low-grade molybdenite concentrate to prepare a high-grade MoS2 using a mixed acid (HF + HCl) leach procedure. Specifically, this investigation is concerned with an understanding of the separation chemistry underlying the removal of the oxide/silicate gangue and the base-metal sulfide associations present in the low-grade molybdenite by their selective dissolution in the two acids. Experiments were conducted on an off-grade concentrate containing 42.6% Mo. Results of the controlled dissolution tests indicate that both HCl and HF are suitable for the removal of the associated alumina and both work well for iron, nickel and copper. However, HF was found to be the most effective for dissolving silica/silicate and magnesia. An attempt was made to rank the leaching efficiencies of the acids used singly, sequentially or in a mixed mode. Scale-up (300 to 2,000 g) experiments were conducted to validate this approach. Excellent purification of the concentrate was possible by processing the off-grade concentrate with 10% HCl plus 15% HF at 363 K for 7.2 ks in open polypropylene reactors with internal stirring. These conditions leached practically all of the oxide and silicate gangue and 96% of the metallic impurities. Starting from the low-grade molybdenite concentrate (42.6% Mo; 71.1% MoS2) it was found feasible to obtain a refined product containing 97.8% MoS2, which is suitable for industrial use.

In the metallurgical treatment of most metallic sulphides it is usually necessary to carry on a roasting-operation. In some cases the raw ore will have to be roasted; in others the intermediary product, matte, produced in smelting the ore; again, both ore and matte may have to be subjected to oxidation at elevated temperatures. Most metallic sulphides, when given an oxidizing-roast, pass through the state of sulphate before they are converted into oxides. All metallic sulphates are completely decomposed by heat, with the exception of those of lead and bismuth, but the temperatures at which decompositions take place vary with the metals. Some metallic sulphates are converted directly into oxides, others first form basic salts. Alkali-earth sulphates show a behavior similar to that of metallic sulphates, while alkali sulphates do not part with their sulphur trioxide even at elevated roasting-temperatures. The older data on the decomposition of metallic sulphates by heat are only approximations. Thus Kerl' gives the order in which metallic sulphates are decomposed with increasing temperatures as (Ag2, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Mn, Pb) SO,. More recent statenlents give definite temperatures and modify the formerly accepted order of decomposition. But the temperatures given by various observers do not agree. The reasons for this are to be found mainly in the method and manner of carrying out experiments. Four methods have been used: 1. In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the 47,000-acre Electric Peak study area (part of the formerly-designated RARE II Non-wilderness Recommended Area no. 1609) to evaluate its' identified mineral resources. The study area is in Powell and Jefferson Counties, YT, about 30 mi southwest of Helena and 30 mi north of Butte. Three lode localities within the study area contain an estimated 159,000 tons of identified subeconomic resources containing gold, silver, and accessory lead, copper, and zinc. Resources at those localities range from 10,000 to 134,000 tons with grades ranging from 0.04 to 0.32 oz/ton gold, 0.92 to 16.42 oz/ton silver, 0.14 to 79.65 percent lead, and as much as 0.41 percent copper and 0.68 percent zinc. One property also contains 0.15 percent antimony. Gold, silver, and base-metal content in samples of poorly exposed mineralized structures indicate that further exploration may identify resources on seven additional study area localities.

"A pilot-scale flotation column was used to evaluate four polyglycol frothers at Teck’s Highland Valley Copper Mine. The column was fed with flotation plant feed from the grinding circuit cyclone overflow. Frother dosage was changed by controlled addition to the column feed. Pulp, froth and metallurgical performance were assessed using gas dispersion measurements, water recovery and copper, molybdenum and gangue grades and recoveries. Ranking the frothers based on pulp and froth phase performance using gas dispersion measurements and water recovery yielded contradictory rankings. All of the frothers changed the froth structure in a similar manner such that, at the same structural conditions, they all gave the same degree of separation between water and entrained solids. The only difference between the frothers was what dosage was required to achieve a certain structure. Changes in pulp structure appeared to be related to the critical coalescence concentration (CCC) for each frother. Changes in froth structure were not completely described by the CCC and involved other factors, such as the hydrophobicity of particles in the froth. All of the frothers were capable of achieving the same metallurgical result, just at different dosages. Optimal dosages for the frothers were anywhere from the CCC, where copper and molybdenum grades were maximised, to 2 to 3 or 4 to 7 times the CCC, where copper and molybdenum recoveries, respectively, were maximised.INTRODUCTION Background Due to supply issues, Teck’s Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Mine replaced Dowfroth 250C, their auxiliary frother, with Huntsman Polyfroth W31. The primary criterion for selection was that the new frother gave the same performance as Dowfroth 250C, minimising disruption to the circuit. Frothers play a dual role in flotation, altering the bubble size in the pulp zone and the stability of the froth. A stronger or weaker frother, or a blend of both, will alter the balance between pulp and froth effects and, ultimately, metallurgy. Dowfroth 250C and Polyfroth W31 may not necessarily be the best frothers for HVC from a metallurgical standpoint. There may be a different frother or frother blend that could deliver higher recovery in the bulk roughers."

"The Candego property is in Boisbuisson and Christie Townships, Quebec, about 13 miles south of Marsoui, a village on the north coast of the Gaspe peninsula, 80 miles east of the railhead at Matane. It was the first producing mine in the peninsula. Production to October 1954, when operations were suspended, totalled 68,497 tons of ore, which yielded concentrates containing 8,706,535 lb. lead, 5,870,272 lb. zinc, 355,526 oz. silver, and about 1,000 oz. gold. The property was acquired by the present company in the summer of 1955.The mine has been developed by seven adits, driven into the west slope of the valley of the Marsoui River. The river here is at an elevation of about 1,600 feet, and is roughly 1,500 feet below the level of the adjacent upland. Adit elevations range from 1,760 to 2,330 feet. Five of them are in one vertical zone, on what was originally believed to be a single vein. Past production has come from Nos. l to 5; the chief present high-grade ore reserves are in No. 7.The author's observations were made in adits Nos. 3 to 6, in several of the old pits, in the surface trenches, and on drill core, at various times between December 1952 and September 1953. Much of the surrounding area has been mapped by Jones (I) and McGerrigle (2) for the Quebec Department of Mines. H. M. Kingsbury served as consulting geologist to the mining company for several years.General GeologyThe Candego veins occur in Lower ( ?) Ordovician sedimentary rocks which form a strip about 15 miles wide along the north coast of the Gaspé peninsula. The series includes limestones, shales, and sandstones, mildly metamorphosed in places. Three miles south of the mine is the north contact of the granitic intrusive, regarded as Lower or Middle Devonian, which underlies the Tabletop Mountains area. This batholith is about 10 miles long, in a north-south direction, and about 4 miles wide. At Mount Albert, about 5 miles west of the Tabletop intrusion, is a group of basic rocks, amphibolites and serpentinized peridotites, thought to have been intruded at the close of the Ordovician."

A major aim of the GOLD 2003 conference, is to promote new gold related science and technology with a view to developing new useful industrial applications for gold. Current industrial uses have provided a steady annual industrial demand for gold of around 350-400 tonnes in recent years, the bulk of which is centred on electronics applications, with dental uses constituting the second largest application. However, there is good reason to believe that whilst gold will continue to play a major role in these sectors in the future, substantial growth of demand is not anticipated. Increased industrial demand for gold is only likely to come through the emergence of new applications, probably most significantly in five broad market sectors: ? Pollution and emission control technologies, including fuel cells. ? New uses for gold in advanced electronics, electrical systems and devices. ? Chemical processing of a range of bulk and speciality chemicals, using gold based catalysts ? Advanced coatings exploiting the novel properties of gold, particularly in nanoparticulate form. ? New biomedical uses for gold including medical treatments, drugs, implants, sensors and devices. There is cause for optimism that many new applications for gold could emerge in these sectors over the next decade and that this will lead to a substantial growth in demand for gold. It is clear that many of these new opportunities will be based on a chemical approach to synthesis of useful products rather than what has historically been a materials or mechanical approach. To turn this expectation into reality requires sustained support of R & D and a determination to exploit this new science and technology into viable commercial applications.
