For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been studying crude petroleum from the producing fields of the United States, During the past year 10 crude-oil samples have been collected and analyzed from the producing fields of Pennsylvania and New York. This report gives the results of these analyses and for the purpose of comparison also analyses of samples of crude oils taken previously from some of these fields. This survey includes samples from normal producing properties as well as from properties using stimulative production methods such as water flooding and rapressuring. The outstanding feature of the survey is that the crude oils from tike various fields throughout this general area are similar in character and uniform in quality although they were produced from different sands and by various methods. Samples from fields in Venango County, Pa., however, appear to have a lower gasoline content than the others. This report includes two analyses reprinted from Bureau of Mines Bulletin 291.4/

Over the last decades, modern technology to build wood structures have been substantially developed. Building solutions for floor systems of wood-concrete mixed T-beams with wood web and concrete flange stand out among these technologies. This work describes an experimental investigation of the performance of bond connectors made of round steel bars for wood-concrete mixed elements. Symmetric three-member specimens were built. The middle member was made of concrete and the other two were made of wood. The first kind of connector consisted of steel bar designed as straight pins with head, normally driven through the wood. The second kind consisted of arc-shaped connectors directly embedded into the wood or bonded using epoxy adhesive. The specimens were then tested in compression. The compressive strength and the force-displacement curve were obtained, in order to evaluate the failure mode and obtain the stiffness in the ultimate (Ku) and serviceability (Ks) limit states. The stiffness values were calculated in the interval corresponding to the secant straight line between, respectively, 10–40 and 10–70% of the ultimate strength. The obtained results indicate high strength and ductile failure mode for all of the cases. Bond stiffness gains were verified when using the arch-shaped connectors.

The income of the Institute is derived mainly from dues, advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion con- stituting endowments for especial purpose?s. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization.

On the southern flank of Lihir Island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1000-1500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts, and porphyritic phlogopite basalts. One of the volcanoes has a recently erupted ejecta blanket (recovery of warm ash!), containing a suite of abundant mafic to ultramafic xenoliths. These xenoliths appear to represent a unique cross-section of subduction- modified mantle material sampled by volatile-rich primary fore-arc magma during its ascent to the seafloor. The most spectacular finding was the discovery of an active hydrothermal system with associated vent fauna and mineralization at Edison Seamount, and the recovery of unusually gold-rich (up to 43 ppm Au) hydrothermal precipitates in 1050 m water depth at the top of Conical Seamount, only 25 km south of the world-class epithermal Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir. The discovery of submarine hydrothermal vents associated with highly alkaline, quartz-undersaturated fore-arc volcanics represents a significant departure from similar hydrothermal systems on the mid-ocean ridges and in back-arc basins. The high gold grades in hydrothermal precipitates at Conical Seamount may indicate the first documented example of a shallow-marine epithermal system analogous to those known on land, and has important implications for the gold potential of submarine arc environments.

PERHAPS the matter of greatest interest to all mining men at the present time is the question of income and excess profits taxes on mines. Every producing mine in the United States is called upon to render to the government an account of its operations and to pay a graduated tax upon its earnings. It is manifestly a matter in which every mine owner, every stockholder in a mining corporation, every mining and metallurgical engineer, every person employed by a mining company and every one engaged in an industry which in any way depends upon the continued operation of our mines or who consumes their products is financially, to a greater or less extent, involved. In view of this fact it is surprising to see how little attention is paid to it and how few of our members have taken the pains to investigate and understand the provisions of recent enactments by Congress and the ways in which these enactments are being applied to mining industries.

"BEFORE I begin, I should like to thank The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for the honour they have bestowed in inviting me to give this address at the fourth annual C.I.M. Conference of Metallurgists banquet.Secondly, I should like' to convey the greetings of the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain in accordance with a request made by its Council at its last meeting. The I.S.I. hopes for the continued growth in strength of this annual Conference and in the collaboration between our respective societies.When I read the program of this Conference, it was brought home to me what a non-ferrons country Canada is. Also, I realized what enormous advances have been, and are being made, and what an ex-citing field non-ferrous metallurgy is for the scientist. This made me wonder, as I have done before, whether the future for steel was proof against these advances.At present, iron and steel stand astride the metallurgical world like a Colossus; I hope that the bronze industry will pardon my stealing their thunder and mixing my metaphors! Will this still be so in the future?The best way to answer this question is to take a look at the fundamentals to see why the iron atom dominates to such an extent that al! other metals are called ""non-ferrons."" Is its present position due to historical and therefore ephemeral reasons, or is there a fundamental difference between the atom of iron and those of other metals?"

W. C. MATTESON (communication to the Secretary*).-The criticism and question raised by Arthur Knapp regarding the standardization of nomenclature is most important. Faulty rock classification-is generally the result of carelessness or ignorance on the part of the driller. Two remedies might be suggested. In a field where several large companies are operating on an extensive scale, a geologist from each concern might be assigned to superintend the gathering of well-log data and the classification of samples. The geologists from the several operating companies might then combine their data, which would doubtless give valuable information to all interested parties. At present, coordination is not a big factor, unfortunately, but the time will come when conservation will demand such systematic coordination on the part of competing companies. The second remedy lies in instructing and educating the driller to a thorough understanding of the importance of an accurate log and correct classification of the various formations. The writer does not agree with the statement that "90 per cent. of the logs as taken today are absolutely worthless to any one but the one who has taken the log." While mistakes in nomenclature often occur, the driller is generally able to classify the important water-, oil-, and gas-bearing formations with a fair degree of accuracy. Such information is often sufficient to permit accurate correlation and also constitutes valuable data for projection purposes. It must be borne in mind that to attempt to use well-log data in a strict scientific sense of accuracy is impracticable and impossible. A broad interpretation and a comprehensive knowledge of the practical limits of such' information are essential in applying it successfully. Even experienced geologists do not always agree on rock classification. The question as to what constitutes correct nomenclature should receive the earnest and immediate attention of geologists, operators, and producers. Although standard textbooks on geology give correct definitions and descriptions of the general rock species, such textbooks fail to develop the subject in sufficient detail for the work under consideration. THE solution of subsurface geological problems requires an analysis of vertical and horizontal dimensional relationships. For many, the ability to visualize structures in three dimensions is not easily acquired, and for areas where the structural conditions are complicated by faulting the need arises for illustrative models. This has led to the many forms of peg models, in which the usual course of construction includes a peg for the well bore, and the suspension of strings from peg to peg to illustrate the formation correlation between wells, thus developing the usual folds and flexures. Such models proved unsatisfactory for the analysis of fault problems. Consideration was then given to the use of transparent materials. A model of the Dominguez oil field was constructed in 1935, which consisted of a series of glass panels from well to well on which the formations were shown in color. This model, though serving its purpose at the time, proved to be impractical from the standpoints of cost, breakage hazard, and extreme difficulty in maintenance. The cost of materials was estimated to be approximately $300, and the construction required the services of one man for a period of from 10 to 12 months. Maintenance after actual construction was an additional expense. Consideration was then given to the use of celluloid, and after some experimental work it was found that the advantages in its use were: (I) a short construction time, (2) ease of handling the material, (3) sections are easily reworked, (4) low cost. CONSTRUCTION It would be of little value to recount here the difficulties encountered in the building of the first celluloid model. The conclusions drawn, however, suggest the following procedure for those who contemplate the construction of such a model: I. Determination of the Scale.-Accurate geological interpretation requires the use of the same scale horizontally and vertically. It should be emphasized that the limited size of the celluloid sheets (20 by 48 in. maximum dimensions), the area to be studied, the maximum depths to be plotted, and area of possible future development are the controlling factors in adopting a scale to be used. 2. Construction of the Base.-A satisfactory base may be constructed by using two pieces of three-ply wood separated by strips of i by 2-in. material. This type of construction prevents warping of the base. The size of the base is determined by the dimensions of the area to be studied plus 5 in. on all sides. A map of the same scale as that adopted for the model, indicating the lines of section to be used, should be fastened to the base. 3. Construction of the Frame (Fig. I).-In the construction of the frame the use of 1/2-in. o.d. pipe welded in a box shape is suggested, with two horizontal rods on each of the four sides, top and bottom. Films of molybdenum have been prepared by sputtering onto oxidized silicon substrates. The resistivity. lattice parameter, orientation, and grain size were studied as a function of substrate temperature and substrate bias. Under normal sputtering conditions, the resistivity of the films was found to be quite high (600 x 10 ohm-crn). However, with the use of the negative substrate bias of 100 v and a substrate temperature of 350°C, films weve produced with a resistivity of ahout twice that of bulk molybdenum. The lattice parameters measured in a direction nornzal to the surface of the films weve found to be gveatev than the bulk value. This was interpreted as being at least partly due to the presence of compressive stresses. The effects of annealing in an Ar-H atmosphere were studied in terms of diffraction line width, lattice parameter, and resistivity. BECAUSE of its relatively low bulk resistivity (5.6 x 106 ohm-cm)' molybdenum is potentially interesting as a thin-film conductor in integrated circuits. An additional feature which makes it attractive for this purpose is its low coefficient of expansion (5.6 x KT6 per "c),' which is fairly well matched to that of silicon (3.2 x 10 per c). It is possible to deposit molybdenum films by evaporation but generally films produced in this manner have a high resistivity. In order to achieve resistivities close to bulk value, Holmwood and Glang found it necessary to operate in a vacuum of about 107 Torr and to maintain the substrates at 600 C during film deposition. Sputtered molybdenum films have been examined by Belser et a1.7 and, recently, by Glang et al.' This paper describes the results of an attempt to extend some of that work and examine the effects of annealing and getter sputtering on the physical and structural properties of the films produced. SPUTTERING APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The apparatus used for most of the film sputtering work described here consisted of two "fingers" serving as anode and cathode, respectively, which were mounted within an 18-in.-diam glass chamber. A liquid nitrogen-trapped 6-in. diffusion-pump system was used to achieve a vacuum of about 1 x 107 Torr within the chamber prior to sputtering. The essential features of the equipment are shown in Fig. 1. Cathode and anode fingers are stainless-steel tubes isolated from the top and bottom plates by Teflon collars. In order to limit the discharge to the space between anode and cathode, each finger is surrounded by an aluminum hield, at ground potential, having an internal diameter 18 in. larger than the outside diameter of the finger. The cathode and anode fingers are 6 and 4 in. in diam, respectively. A 116-in.-thick sheet of molybdenum is brazed with a 10 pct Pd, 58 pct Ag, 32 pct Cu alloy to a copper disc which is mounted by means of screws and a large 0 ring onto the lower end of the cathode finger. The disc is cooled during sputtering by water circulation inside the finger. The use of several feet of plastic tubing for the water input and outputg reduces leakage to ground to less than 1 ma when the cathode potential is raised to 5 kv. The upper end of the anode finger is terminated by a brazed-on copper block. A variety of specimen holders can be easily mounted on the upper face of this block. Substrate heating or cooling is achieved by use of an appropriate unit attached to the lower face of the same block. Heating is achieved by means of cartridge-type heaters and cooling by copper coils fed with forming gas under pressure. The inner chamber of the specimen finger constitutes a small vacuum chamber of its own which is evacuated by an auxiliary mechanical pump in order to limit heating element oxidation and heat transfer by convection currents. An advantage of the finger arrangement is the absence of cooling and heating coils and wires within the main chamber. The stain less-steel shutter is useful to establish a discharge for cleaning the cathode at the beginning of each sputtering run. Water cooling of the shutter reduces heating and the out-gassing of impurities which might condense on the nearby substrates. Unless otherwise specified, the substrates used in these experiments were 1-in.-diam oxidized silicon wafe:s, 0.007 in. thick, having an oxide thickness of 6000A. The substrate holders were large copper discs onto the surface of which a number of molybdenum discs, 116 in. thick and 78 in. in diam, were brazed. The wafers were clamped to the molybdenum discs

THE engineers of Illinois have been submitting to the State Geological Survey an increasing number of requests for advice on their geological problems, including landslides, unequal settling of fills, laying pavements across peat bogs, shattering and heaving of pavement by frost action, etc. The authors discussed the behavior of landslides, their effects, their causes, a tentative classification, and remedial measures. In the latter connection the efficacy of drainage and how it should be handled in order to be most effective was considered. The principles and efficacy of other remedial measures, such as subsurface blasting, rock anchoring, installation of wood, concrete or steel piling, construction of retaining walls, construction of cribbing and reduction of slope were also discussed. Attention was also given to the matter of applying geological knowledge to avoid undesirable highway locations, and a specific example was cited.

The DOPA process (Direct Oxidation of a Precursor Alloy) was used to prepare ceramic powders based on doped SnO2 and ZnO. The DOPA process consists essentially in the direct oxidation of a homogeneous precursor alloy. A unique advantage of this process is its rather benign environmental impact since no dangerous reactants are used and no harmful by-products are generated. Only oxygen and the alloy metals participate on the chemical reaction to produce the multi-component oxide. Homogeneous alloys of niobium, cobalt and chromium doped tin have been prepared. The molten metal alloy is atomised in air using a double fluid nozzle to produce metallic powders. A subsequent thermal treatment is carried out to fully oxidise the sprayed metal alloy powders. These raw powders are used to prepare a ceramic powder through a mill homogenisation and atomisation process. The ceramic powder is then uniaxially compacted in disc shape and sintered in an oxidising atmosphere. The resulting sintered bodies are metallised on their flat faces and the cylindrical surface is passivated using lead free glass enamel. These ceramics present excellent semiconducting properties with non-linear (non-ohmic) characteristics. The DOPA process is found to be an attractive procedure to obtain ceramic powders for the preparation of SnO2 varistors.

"A coal burst occurred on 15 April, 2014 at the Austar Coal Mine, located west of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. The burst resulted in fatal injuries to two men working as part of the mining crew at the development face. At the time, a continuous miner was being used to mine a longwall development gate road through heavily structured coal, at a depth of approximately 550m. A number of pre-cursor bumps had occurred on previous shifts, emanating from the coal ribs of the roadway, in proximity to the coal face.This paper reviews the geological, geotechnical and mining conditions and circumstances leading up to the coal burst event; and presents and discusses the available evidence and possible interpretations relating to the geomechanical behaviour mechanisms that may have been critical factors in this incident. The paper also discusses some key technical and operational considerations of ground support systems and mining practices and strategies needed for operating in such conditions in the future.INTRODUCTIONAustar Coal Mine is an underground longwall coal mine located near Cessnock in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales (NSW), Australia and is the only underground mine still extracting the Greta Seam in this region. The mine was the first in Australia to adopt the Chinese-developed Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) method for thick seam extraction. Typically seam thickness ranges from 4m to 7m and depth of mining from 480m to 560m, with future mining planned down to depths of up to 700m, making it one of the deepest operating coal mines in Australia.On 15 April 2014, a pressure burst occurred in the left hand rib at the active mining face of B Heading, 2 to 3 cut-through, Maingate A9 panel, during development of the gateroads for the ninth longwall top coal caving panel. Strata in the general vicinity was affected by disturbed geology and multiple geological structures. Figure 1 shows a section of the mine plan as at October 2014 (six months after the accident), indicating the current longwall extraction panel (AS) and the development panel A9 where the accident occurred. (Note: Neither development nor longwall face positions changed significantly between the time of the accident and the date of this plan). At the time of the accident the current longwall face was in excess of 1,000m away from the Maingate A9 development panel face position."

"The pressure leaching of alkali-pretreated limonitic laterite ore in nitric acid was studied. The optimal leaching conditions are as follows: leaching temperature of 458 K, initial nitric acid of 2.44 mol/L, leaching time of 60 min, liquid to solid ratio of 2:1 mL/g, agitation speed of 500 RPM. Under the above conditions, the extraction of nickel and cobalt can be achieved as approximate 95% and 80% respectively while that of iron is as lower as 1%. The leaching residue containing 70% of iron in the form of hematite and trace amount of chromium is suitable as the raw material for iron-making. The nitric acid in the leaching solution can be regenerated and further recycled to leach. INTRODUCTIONIt has been estimated that 60%-70% of the world land-based nickel resources presented in nickel laterites containing 130 million tons of nickel although these only accounted for about 42% of the world nickel production (Sudol, 2005; Luo et al., 2010). The nickel resource of laterite has not yet been fully utilized. Due to the increasing global demand of nickel and the declining global reserves of nickel sulphides, there is an increasing focus on the processing of the huge reserves of laterite ores today. Nickel laterite ores can be simply divided into two types, namely, silicate-rich and limonite. The former can be treated effectively by pyrometallurgical process in which the ferronickel product or nickel/iron sulphide matte is produced (Monhemius, 1987). The limonitic laterite is rich in iron in the form of goethite which is the main nickel-bearing mineral and usually contains cobalt associated with a manganese phase (Chang et al., 2010; Georgiou and Papangelakis, 2004). The limonitic laterite is usually processed by hydrometallurgical methods, such as atmosphere acid leaching (AL) (Xu et al., 2005; McDonald and Whittington, 2008), high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) (Chou et al., 1977; Georgiou and Papangelakis, 1998; Rubisov et al., 2000; Whittington and Muir, 2000) and reductive roasting-ammonia leaching (Caron Process) (Whittington and Muir, 2000; Valix and Cheung, 2002). The AL process can proceed at lower temperature, thus the operation costs may be very low. But two biggest problems associate with the AL process, namely, the slow rates of nickel extraction and potentially the significant amount of impurities such as iron and aluminum in the leaching solutions, which hampers the wide application of the AL process. The Caron Process uses the pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods together to obtain the metallic values, but the overall metal recovery is relatively low, especially for cobalt. In recent years, the environment-friendly process of HPAL has become increasingly important because it is most suitable for low-grade ores and leads to high extraction of the valuables. However, the HPAL process needs a much higher temperature and pressure (503-533 K, 4-5 MPa) to maintain a relatively fast leaching rates, which results in higher operation costs. Moreover, another serious problem of scale formation in autoclaves occurs in the HPAL process, for example, in Moa Bay, up to 20 cm scale may build up resulting in 5 days descale downtime per month. In addition, the iron residues cannot be utilized for ironmaking due to the presence of high content chromium (Ema and Harada, 1987; Owada and Harada, 1987; Takagi and Furui, 1987)."

Expeximental viscosity and density data of lour natural gases are presented for temperatures from WO to 340F and pressures from 100 to 8.000 psia. A correlation is also discussed and results reported. INTRODUCTION This investigation is one of several efforts by the authors to provide viscosity data for pure hydrocarbons and mixtures. Results of some pure hydrocarbons and their mix tures have been presented." Several predictive methods and correlations have also been reported.'," This paper presents the experimental viscosity and density data of four natural gases and confirms a correlation in a previous study. APPARATUS The viscometer was described previously. 2,6 A bank of stainless steel pycnometers was included to determine density in conjunction with the viscosity measurements (Fig. I). DATA AND MATERIALS The natural gases were furnished by the Atlantic Richfield Co. (Samples 1 and 21, the Continental Oil Co. (Sample 3) and the Pan American Petroleum Corp. (Sample 4). Table 1 shows the composition of these gases obtained by mass spectrometer analysis. The pure component viscosity data used in the correlation have been published."".'"', '" Experimental and calculated viscosity data for the natural gases are presented in Tables 2 through 5. CORRELATION Starling and Ellington"' have reported several semi-empirical expressions based to a certain extent on the theory of viscosity advanced by Born and Green.' Density data by Sage and Lacey" were used to fit the equations. Eq. 2 gives reliable values of the viscosity of light hydrocarbons without prior knowledge of experimental viscosity values, but accurate density data must be available. Eq. 2 was used to predict viscosity values for the natural gases studied in this paper. The particular set of parameters contained in Eqs. 3 through 5 gave values that reproduced experimental data within 25 per cent. Needless to say, in using Eq. 2 better density values will give better viscosity results. However, those engineers who do not have accurate density values at hand or the time, or such facilities as a library, computer, etc. readily available, may feel uneasy in using Eq. 2. Therefore, the authors sought the easiest but by no means best density prediction method, which was reported by Kaf 30 years ago. A practical an interactive model to describe the operation of a flotation bank of mechanical cells was developed based on the hydrodynamic and metallurgical characterization of large industrial flotation cells. Thus, the mineral grade and recovery, as well as the stream properties along the flotation bank can be described in terms of the operating variables. The model was built considering the flotation bank as a distributed system, so the solution for the water and solids mass balances, per size classes, for each single cell, are sequentially solved. Also, each cell was described by two distinct zones, the collection zone characterized by the flotation rate constant and the froth zone characterized by the froth recovery. The mineral feed was described in terms of the mineral species and particle size classes, using a rectangular flotation rate constant distribution. Also, the effect of changing the actual operating variables (air flowrate, pulp level, pulp density, pulp flowrate, etc.) on the mineral collection process, in the collection (pulp) zone, was considered downstream along the bank. The froth recovery of floatable mineral has been estimated by measuring the mass flowrate of particles entering the froth by true flotation together with the concentrate mass flowrate (ton/h). The mass flowrate of collected particles at the pulp/froth interface level was calculated from direct measurement of bubble load (ton/m3) and gas flowrate (m3/h). Flotation recovery is mainly related to the froth depth and air flowrate. All parameters considered in the model have been adjusted from direct measurements in plant site. Also, the effects of other operating variables such as reagents dosage, top of froth grade, or froth discharge velocity are presently under study. This procedure has been tested using data from industrial rougher operations consisting of flotation banks with 5 cells to 9 cells in series, and different cell sizes, such as 45m3, 130m3, 160m3 and 250m3. Thus, it has been shown that the model approach is a powerful tool for flotation cells diagnosis, operation and development of new control strategies, as well as, to evaluate the effect that de-sign and operating variables have upon the collection and froth zones performance in large flotation cells.

A study of the ignition of non-fire-resistant hydraulic fluid sprays was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Both an open flame and a hot steel surface were used as the external heat sources. With the open flame as the heat source, the minimum oil temperature and minimum spray nozzle pressure that resulted in an ignition were measured. The effects of the distance between the open flame and the nozzle and the nozzle orifice diameter on the ignitability of the hydraulic fluid sprays were examined. With the hot surface as the heat source, the minimum surface ignition temperature was determined. The degree of oil atomization and the relative direction of oil injection with respect to the hot surface are discussed. The ignition of oil sprays from the impingement of oil jets onto a vertical surface was also investigated. Finally, the results are compared with those obtained for fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. A mathematical modeling method was developed by the Bureau of Mines for the prediction of the principal equilibrium species in the solvent extraction of copper. The use of models for predicting the amount of metal extracted can reduce the amount of experimental work required to characterize a system for purposes such as optimization studies. Models were developed for the extraction of copper from ammoniacal sulfate and carbonate solutions with commercially available extract ants commonly used by industry. Results from laboratory shakeout tests compared well with predictions of the equilibrium concentrations of copper and pH values. For example, the loading of copper onto the solvent was predicted for most cases within ±S pct of the measured values, and the pH to with-in ±O.l pH unit in sulfate systems and ±O.2 pH unit in carbonate systems. Both mechanistic and empirical extraction equations were developed from laboratory data for copper and ammonia. The empirical-based models were slightly more accurate than were the mechanistic-based mod-els. Industrial level concentrations of the aqueous and organic constituents were used in this work. Independent variables included copper concentration, ionic strength, and initial pH of the aqueous phase; extractants, diluents, and their concentration in the organic phase; and temperature.

The Coal Research Bureau of the School of Mines at West Virginia University, using an experimental flotation cell designated an airlift-cyclone was able to obtain a clean coal product containing 7.64% ash with 94% yield and 97% coal recovery. This favorable performance was obtained with the experimental flotation cell operating as a simulated three-stage unit on slurry taken from the fine coal circuit of a coal preparation plant. This experimental device, consisting of a sheet metal cyclone-like unit mounted on a U-shaped uplift pipe, uses a combined flotation and cyclone action to beneficiate the minus 14 mesh partially cleaned feed product. In addition to providing comparable analytical results, the airlift-cyclone possesses other attractive features among them being a low capital expenditure, utilization of moderate plant floor space, efficient operation on high density feed slurry, and absence of moving parts. The primary shortcoming of the experimental cell is its limited capacity. The Coal Research Bureau presently has under construction a larger unit which, it is hoped, will provide the capacity and quality to establish the airlift-cyclone as a commercially feasible unit. Froth flotation of fine coal is a practice which has only recently gained wide acceptance in this country. Various explanations can be put forth for this delayed acceptance of a very selective and efficient system of coal preparation. Among these reasons would be the advent of continuous mining machines resulting in the increased production of coal fines, the change in market patterns from domestic and rail consumers who did not want fines to a predominantly utility market which normally consumes fines, and also the imposition of legal restrictions in regard to stream pollution. However, the major detriment is probably the high cost involved both in installation and operation of the flo- tation unit and auxiliary systems. These facts assume greater emphasis when considering that froth flotation installations normally process a low quality feed product. A recent estimate' of installation costs including dryers, filters, and other auxiliary equipment for a flotation system was $5000 to $7000 per ton of capacity while the operating costs, exclusive of auxiliary equipment, were estimated at 10 to 306 per ton of feed. The Coal Research Bureau of the School of Mines at West Virginia University is currently developing a simplified froth flotation cell, designated an airlift-cyclone, which may provide considerable savings in capital and operating costs without sacrificing product quality or recovery. This experimental cell consists of three primary components: 1) a vertically mounted U-shaped pipe; 2) an air injector device; and 3) an integrally mounted cyclone-like unit (Fig. 1). A feed slurry is introduced at the top of one leg of the U-pipe while compressed air is injected near the base of the other leg. The air serves both to aerate the pulp and to cause it to flow upward into the base of the cyclone unit where the floated clean coal is separated from the reject material and unfloated coal which remains in slurry. The Coal Research Bureau's experimental airlift-cyclone is somewhat similar in principle to a flotation device developed by Russian engineers in the late 1950's. In tests upon a two-stage pilot-size device, the Russians obtained very favorable cleaning efficiencies.' However, later experience with production models demonstrated that rated capacities and acceptable product quality could not always be maintained.3 Because of these limitations, Russian engineers subsequently recommended that conventional, mechanical cells be used when cleaning difficult to float slurries. Engineers at the Coal Research Bureau felt that such a device utilizing the combined actions of a cyclone and a froth flotation machine offered numerous attractive features and merited investigation. Accordingly, a small capacity experimental airlift-cyclone was designed and, with the permission of the Christopher Coal Company Div. of Consolidation Coal Co., installed in Christopher's Humphrey preparation plant near Morgantown, West Virginia.

The recovery of zinc in refineries is strongly affected by the formation of zinc ferrites during the roasting of zinc concentrates. To achieve the highest zinc recovery most of these plants operate under high acidity and high temperature conditions in their leaching circuits. However, under these conditions high iron dissolution occurs. For iron control the common practice is to precipitate it as jarosite, and calcine is normally used as neutralizing agent. This practice causes a significant loss of metal values associated with the calcine, such as zinc ferrites and silver insoluble phases. These metal values are carried by the jarosite into confined waste in many plants. In order to diminish such losses, it is necessary to use a neutralizing agent that could substitute the use of calcine. An alternative neutralizing could be the basic zinc sulfate (BZnS). This work presents the results of a laboratory analysis on the required conditions for the BZnS production from process streams of a zinc refinery plant. Neutralizing behavior of BZnS was evaluated in iron precipitation as jarosite, in order to establish the feasibility of replacing the calcine and decrease the loss of zinc and other metals values during the iron removing step of the hydrometallurgical circuit of the zinc refinery under study.
